About Ontario Basketball Provincial Championships is owned and operated by Ontario Basketball, in collaboration with 18 host clubs throughout 12 Ontario communities. Over eight weekends each Spring, more than 16,000 athletes playing for nearly 1,200 club teams will complete for approximately 150 divisional provincial titles. Tournaments are held for both genders in all age categories between Under 10 through Under 19. In remaining dedicated to the Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L) model, teams are grouped into eight-team divisions to ensure quality competition and a positive playing environment. Ontario Cup remains one of the largest basketball events in North America. For updated scores, standings, photos and more, visit www.basketball.on.ca or follow us on Twitter @OBANews.
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR To all 2014 Ontario Cup Provincial Championships Participants, On behalf of the board of directors and staff of Ontario Basketball, we would like to take this opportunity to extend a very warm welcome to all the athletes, coaches, officials, parents, volunteers and spectators to the 2014 Ontario Cup Provincial Championships. Organizing a provincial tournament is a very time consuming endeavor. This year, Ontario Cup is being hosted in a dozen communities with nearly 16,000 athletes and 3,000 coaches among 1,150 teams. Please join us in thanking our tournament host committee and volunteers for all of their efforts in making this weekend possible. Thank you to all Ontario Basketball corporate partners and community sponsors for their continued support of amateur basketball in the province. Additionally, we would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge all the Ontario Basketball member clubs and our parents. Without the ongoing support and commitment from all our basketball communities across the province, OBA would not have the opportunity to develop our youth and have basketball continue to flourish in this country. The Ontario Cup Provincial Championships are the culmination and celebration of your efforts, commitment and development throughout the basketball season. Have fun, good luck and best wishes this weekend! Yours in basketball,
Greg Verner President
Jason Jansson Executive Director

Kitchener-Waterloo Youth Basketball Association June 6-8, 2014
Welcome to the 2014 U19 Junior Men’s Ontario Cup Provincial Championships! The K-W Youth Basketball Association and their “Viper” teams are proud to be hosting all the Junior Men’s teams and their families in the Twin Cities again this year. This region has long been a hotbed of basketball talent and many of the area’s players have gone on to higher levels of the game including Provincial and National teams. The YBA is very proud of any part that they play in developing players both on and off the court from Novice right through to the rest of their life. Since being named the OBA “Club of the Year’ for 2012, the KW YBA has tried to improve all aspects of our organization and want this to be the best Ontario Cup ever. We would like to thank the Cities of Kitchener and Waterloo, the Waterloo Region District School Board and the KW Basketball Officials Association for their support of this tournament. The pink whistles that you see on the referees this weekend are part of their campaign to raise money for cancer research ($1 of their game fee for all Provincial Cup games is being donated to this cause). We would also like to thank all the members of the YBA and Vipers as well as the other groups who have volunteered to assist this weekend as Site Convenors, scorers, timers, shot clock operators and in other capacities to make sure that these Championships run smoothly. We hope that you enjoy your stay this weekend and that all your time, hard work, and dedication from this season will be showcased. Even though only one team will win the ultimate prize, every one of you is already a champion for coming this far. Do your best and make the most of each moment. Make your parents, your coaches, your team, your club, and, most of all, yourself proud. K-W is an ideal spot for hosting these Ontario Championships. Not only can this region offer state-of-the-art athletic facilities and first class accommodations but beautiful surroundings as well. You might enjoy the St. Jacob’s Farmers Market Saturday morning or Conestoga Mall later on. We fully encourage to you to take advantage of the many amenities of the area during your stay here. Remember to take a moment this weekend to thank your coaches for their time and effort, your team mates for their friendship and your parents for their support for the 2014 season. Best of luck to all the teams! John Illingworth President, KW YBA
Mike Quigley KW YBA Executive Administrator
FROM END OF THE BENCH TO NATIONAL TEAM Murphy Burnatowski is a success story. He made it from riding the bench on his OBA club team to the Canadian National Senior Mens team through hard work and determination. In the fall of 2005 as an awkward, skinny Grade 9 player at Sir John A. Macdonald SS in Waterloo, he tried out for and made the K-W Vipers Major Midget #1 team even though the rest of the team was 1 year older. Throughout that year, his skills developed under the tutelage of his coaches, Andrew MacKay and Mike Quigley, and he became part of the rotation. The next yearas a Juvenile, under coach Nick White, he was instrumental in bringing back a D1 Bronze Medal. The next 2 years, as a member of the Junior #1 Viper team, he was a leader on a team battling in Division 1. As a Grade 11 in 2007 he was invited to become part of NEDA based in Hamilton and for the next 2 years developed under Coach Greg Francis and was a member of Canada’s Junior National team in 2008 and 2009. In 2009 he accepted a full scholarship to University of Maine (D1) where he was named to the American East All-Rookie team. He continued at Maine for the 2010-11 season. In 2011 he transferred to Colgate University (D1) in New York where he was named an All Patriot League Player for both 2012-13 and 201314. In the summers he continued with canada’s National teams, playing on the Senior Mens Development team in 2010 and the Senior Mens team in 2011 under coach Leo Rautins. In 2013 he was a member of Canada’s University Games team under coach Jay Triano that went undefeated until the medal games (including 3 wins over the United States team). Since graduation this spring, Murphy has been looking to take his game to the next level – as a professional player somewhere. “When growing up I always wanted to play against the best competition. In 9th grade I knew playing against 10th graders was the only way I could truly improve my game and Vipers gave me the opportunity to do so. If you make sure you are never the best player in the gym, then every time you workout there will be someone to compete against and push you to your full potential. Playing division I basketball was very important to me. But what was most important was being on the court. If you are getting playing time there is no way for you to improve in game situations. Whether it is Division I, II, III or CIS, being able to get on the court is one thing that must happen in order to improve. Every school can offer different situations. Just because you struggle in one place does not always mean you can't succeed. I struggled at my first school and after transferring I was able to become an all conference player. The initial struggle is what helped motivate me to work and become the player I am today. Now I am looking forward to starting my professional career in Europe and I will use the same approach I have used throughout my college years to try and play in the best leagues possible overseas.” His is truly a success story based solely on hard work and determination. OUA FEATURED MALE ATHLETE: DANI ELGADI - BROCK BADGERS Dani Elgadi has taken the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) basketball community by storm this season, hovering around the top of nearly all statistical categories. The six-foot-seven Brock Badgers forward is no stranger to success on the court; a success which started on the courts of the Ontario Basketball Association (OBA) clubs in his hometown of Waterloo. Elgadi was a late-bloomer by any standards, not picking up basketball at a competitive level until his grade 10 year. It was then that the natural athlete was looking for the right sport for him and on athleticism alone made the team at Waterloo Collegiate. Knowing he had found his sport, Dani was in search of better competition, a year later he started playing with the KW Vipers, an Ontario Basketball Association club serving youth in the Kitchener-Waterloo area. “The Vipers weren’t a top team in our area at the time and that let me come in and play a lot even though I wasn’t very skilled or experienced,” said Elgadi. “I was fairly new to basketball and very raw. I relied on athleticism but they gave me a chance to play and develop my skill set.” In his two seasons in the Vipers program Elgadi found both individual and team success. In his first season with the club they were a Division 4 program, but went on to claim gold at the Junior Boys Division 3 Ontario Cup a year later. As a budding star, Dani was asked to join the ranks of the Waterloo Wildhawks a year later and compete against the top talent the Ontario Basketball Association had to offer, in Division 1. In his final year of OBA basketball before moving on to join the Brock Badgers, Elgadi and his Wildhawk teammates earned a bronze medal at the Under-19 Division 1 Ontario Cup.
Elgadi’s rookie campaign with the OUA’s Brock Badgers has been remarkable. When asked how his time with OBA clubs has helped him reach success at the next level, Dani had nothing but praise for those around him. “I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to have coaches that are willing to look out for you. Not just basketball-wise, but as a person,” he said. “Training with great players in the summer allowed me to see that I could go further with my game. I learned to play with brains more than just brawn.” The one thing that anyone can take from Dani Elgadi is that hard work and dedication will help get you where you want to go. His basketball career has been brief but productive; from no competitive basketball experience to an Ontario Cup gold medal, to a bronze medal in the top division and an outstanding OUA rookie campaign; all in the span of five years. Much of Dani’s success can be attributed to the work and dedication of himself, his coaches and teammates at the great OBA clubs in his hometown and across the province.
