Team Psych was represented at the 2nd annual Hooters to Hooters race classic 10KM, on 9/15/13 in Clearwater by Mike GR and Chris Barnes. The race weather was very warm , and very humid which did not help our race times. This is a pretty good race with plenty of water points (4). They hand out some nice glass beer mugs as as age group prizes (through 3rd place). Also, there is plenty of free beer and Hooter nuggets and celery, as well as water and sodas for all to enjoy for the post race activities. Michael (April Triathlete of the month) finished in 50:38. Chris Barnes 3rd place
The final event of TriRock season, Clearwater is a must visit destination where you can finish your triathlon season on the Gulf area’s white sand beaches. Featuring a unique venue, all of the action takes place at Pier 60 with an outdoor Health & Fitness Expo and family friendly event activities. The course boasts a single loop swim in the Gulf of Mexico, followed by a flat, single loop bike course that takes athletes through the sites of downtown Clearwater and ends with a scenic run finishing back at Pier 60. Our Featured Race within a Race is the Triathlon Club Challenge where the top 10 clubs based on number of registered participants receive a pre/post race area. SPRINT Mark Davis

A “Triathlife Story”
The training is hard…..the racing is great…..the learning curve is never ending…..the challenge to yourself to unlimited……and the adventures one experiences never cease….. But the best part of triathlon is the people. This is a story about triathletes. How and why they form a bond that cannot be broken and why, once you do your first race, you are part of the group. Being a triathlete is a way of life, not a life style. Let me tell you why. I had just passed my first year as a triathlete. Twelve months of hard work and dedication, countless hours swimming, riding, and running, much of it alone. Also, many nights reading and learning and planning the next week or two of work outs. It was a magical time for me because after
years of searching for a new sport I finally found the ultimate. This is a sport that challenges the individual to improve oneself. Everyone is out there competing against themselves. Yes, we do compete against each other but that is secondary after you hit “complete physical exhaustion”. This is where each and every one of us finds ourselves. It is this moment of “I have nothing left to give” that we have all been through, that binds us as a group. To make it through this “wall” and come out the other side and discover a “new you” is the driving force behind this sport called Triathlon. This is the one thing that we all have in common which makes us all friends. This is why if you have to ask why we do it, you will
never understand. I was competing in a triathlon that was sponsored by my favorite bike shop in Clearwater, FL. I had come out of the water after having completed a good swim leg and was starting to put together a good ride. I was feeling really good on this day and then a guy went to pass me. So I was up for the challenge and got out of my saddle and started to push it. This was so much fun because this guy was good, much faster than I was and just keeping up with him gave me a boost. Then suddenly everything changed… My right hand slipped off my handle bars, my bike jolted to the right, and I plunged directly into a one foot concrete wall, flipped over it, and landed on head. The next thing I remember is some guy’s face upside down looking at me saying, “Hey, we have you on a body board and we’re putting you in the ambulance now.” “uh…ok.” It is the events that transpired between these two moments that is the interesting part of the story. Behind me on the bike was a girl we will call Carolyn, because that is what her name is. In front of me was another girl called Dawn who turns out to have a great sense of hearing. Carolyn got front row seats to my splendid buffoonery and stopped immediately. Dawn heard the commotion and turned around. Immediately they came to my aid. No questions asked, not knowing who I was, they both abandoned their race to see me through the next 15 minutes of complete uncon-
sciousness. They called the ambulance and stayed with me till the pros took over. When I started to respond they talked to me and asked basic questions. AND apparently according to Dawn and Carolyn, I got all the questions correct! They talked to me and held me and took care of me and I can’t even recall it. I did not remember anything that transpired with Carolyn and Dawn and did not even know about them till later on. Not only did they take care of me in the critical minutes after an accident, they went back to the transition area and gathered my personal belongings, picked up my truck, bought me a breakfast burrito and came to the hospital emergency room! I was no longer a stranger to them and they had to make sure I would get home safe. This is what makes triathletes different. This is the “way of life”, this is the bond, and this is what it means to be a triathlete. As you can imagine, Carolyn and Dawn are now my new BFF’s. My name is John I am a Triathlete And I hope you are too — with Dawn Clark and Carolyn Kiper.

Last year Team Psych finished 3rd Place. Another team in Tampa had incorrectly been placed in our division when they claimed to be in the under two hundred member category. The same week they listed themselves with USAT magazine with over four hundred. This competition is a team competition. So sign up and help us kick butt!

Karla Malone has been a Team Psych member for about a year now. She is an experienced Triathlete and her favorite charitable activity is related to helping returning veterans get involved in athletics via Hope for Warriors. Her other athletic endeavor is dragon boat racing. She brings these two together for returning veterans.
Five Questions Karla
asks
Paddler Malone:
How were you introduced to the sport of dragon boat racing? When I moved to Tampa I was fortunate enough to get a seat on the Lifestyle dragon boat team in 2010 for the Tampa races. From there the Lifestyle coach encouraged me to join his team. I have been racing with Tampa Bay Paddling Club since then. I loved the speed of the boat, the paddles in sync, the teamwork and the excitement of racing.
What do you love most about being a paddler? I love being on the water, my teammates and the adrenaline of racing to the finish line. I love the camaraderie and the friends that I have made from other states and countries. The dragon boat community is an extended family. Everyone is so friendly and fun. You meet people from all over the world with one common love - dragon boat racing. What inspired you about the military to start a new team? I got involved with Hope for the Warriors in 2010, became the captain of the Tampa Running
TriClu
team in 2013. My inspiration for starting a dragon boat team started when I saw the Leathernecks (from The Villages, FL) racing a few years ago. I saw an opportunity to give our Tampa military members a fun team water sport. I wanted see more military members involved in the sport. I wanted to give them an opportunity to cross train in a new sport and something different than their daily PT. It is one way I give back to the brave service members that have sacrificed to keep our country free. I am always looking for more team members. What are the goals for this new team? My goals are to continue to build the Hope for the Warriors team, to include a female team and youth team and to encourage service members to get involved in dragon boat racing. We have a large military community in Tampa. I have a lot of support and help in assembling the team and I owe a lot to my teammates who have supported my idea and my coaches who selflessly give their time to coach and steer. Thanks Keith and Kitt. I owe a lot to our military service members. What would you give as a recommendation to a new paddler look-
ing to get into dragon boating? Don't let intimidation stop you from trying dragon boating. We were all beginners at one time. If any service member and/or family member is interesting in joining my team, please contact me. (malone.karla@gmail.com)

Mental toughness awards for Jason Casuga andChris Altimari two screamin fast guys that nobody would want to mess with on any day! Congrats to John Green at fort desoto this weekend with podium finish. Best news of all? Everyone is safe and no injuries for our folks this weekend.
See Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ Congrats to all! Nicole Davis Mike wrote: "Great weather, great race, and most of all I'm glad to have shared it with my Team Psych friends Nicole, Mark, Michelle, Bro oke, Pete, Kari, andKeith. Thanks for welcoming me into your group!"
have to say time with family and friends. I also like to cook and do home improvement projects. Key Race or goal for the season: To PR at Augusta 70.3 (under 5:21) Athletic history before triathlon: None. Ran the occasional 5k and just tried to stay in shape. Triathlete for how many seasons: This is my 3rd season. Currently my bike is a: 2011 Cervelo P2 My dream bike is a : Still hooked on the Cervelo P3/P4.
Keith Bauer’s story from his triahtlete of the month never did make the weekly so we are putting it in this edition. Family Information: No wife, No children (I‘ve checked), No girlfriend!!!! Single Single ready to mingle!! If I wasn’t a Captain Firefighter/Paramedic (real occupation), I would be a lottery winner!(dream job) Passions outside Triathlon: Is there time for anything after work and training??? I would
Biggest obstacle I overcame in becoming a triathlete: Open water anxiety. The quote goes “The hardest part about a triathlon is the swim. On the bike if you’re tired you can coast, on the run you can walk, but on the swim if you get tired you drowned.” What is your greatest triathlon moment or story? High fiving Macca on the run at the Tri Key West race! Then talking with him after the race and pretending I thought his name was Craig Alexander! Muhaha (stirs the invisible pot) What inspires me is: Seeing older guys like Harry Williams and all the other triathletes twice my age competing! Also trying to chase down super fast guys like Kevin Drury who are old enough to be my dad, but still zip past me on the bike like im sit-
ting still! My favorite part about triathlon is… Rest days!!!!!! Absolute best! Guilty Pleasures: Right now it’s corn dogs!! Ya know the cheap state fair ones in the freezer section. I’m only 55 seconds away from some microwaved deliciousness!!! Philosophies/Quotes/Mottos: “Work smarter, not harder”, “Find a job you love to do and you will never have to work a day in your life”, “If you think you can, or can’t you’re right”, “One day you won’t be able to do this; today is not that day”, “You can sleep when you die”, “Never good ever happens after 2am” What drew you to Team Psych? In all honesty I was looking for open water practice when I stumbled the team page. From then on I found everyone to be very easy going and a fun group of people to be around. I still have to work on this whole drinking thing though, you guys are ridiculous! Livers of a sailor!
