Support & Skills
International Trade Support
The life science sector is a global industry. Whether marketing medical devices, developing new drugs and diagnostics or manufacturing pharmaceuticals, our members’ markets are international.
Our team regularly attend international trade events, such as Medica in Düsseldorf, Arab Health in Dubai and Bio-Europe events across Europe, to promote our members’ products and services, build international relationships, and gain first hand experience of which events and markets present the best opportunities for our members.
We work with Welsh Government and UK partners to advise on the international trade needs of the sector and to publicise missions, events and opportunities.
We work with partner organisations to offer members the widest opportunity to participate in international trade events. As the Welsh Medilink UK partner, our members have discounted opportunities to attend the largest international trade exhibitions across the globe each year. Our colleagues at BioPartner UK also provide MediWales members with discounted opportunities to attend the world’s largest biotech partnering events and conferences.
Advocacy
It is important that MediWales represents the interests of its members. Active representation to both UK and Welsh governments provides an independent voice for the life science sector in Wales.
Our programme of Special Interest Groups, events and meetings helps our team to maintain a thorough understanding of current issues and to ensure that the needs of our members are conveyed to policymakers and support organisations in a timely and collaborative manner.
The impact of Brexit on international trade and regulation is still a current issue. It is important that our members’ views are considered regarding international trade, the regulatory landscape, access to skilled staff, movement of capital and many other issues that need to be addressed appropriately if our sector is to grow and flourish.
Welsh Government’s Innovation Strategy has been published and will have an influence on support for the sector in the coming years. MediWales has engaged in the consultations during the development of this strategy. As legislation, strategies and plans are developed, MediWales plays a role in disseminating information to members, consulting and contributing input, either directly to government or as part of our partner organisations and networks. MediWales is a member of the UK Med Tech Forum, giving our members a voice and representation to UK Government at the highest level.

Innovation and collaboration in the fight against cancer
Cancer remains one of the biggest areas of Welsh Government research investment, supporting delivery of clinical trials, personal awards and the development of key research infrastructure such as the Welsh Cancer Research Centre, funded by Health and Care Research Wales.
Health and Care Research Wales is committed to developing innovative and ambitious cancer research studies, in order to continue to improve outcomes for people and communities in Wales.
CReST – Wales’ coordinated Cancer Research Strategy
In July, the first ever national coordinated Cancer Research Strategy for Wales (CReST) was published, bringing together the entire research community in the fight against cancer.
The strategy was developed by Health and Care Research Wales, the Wales Cancer Network and the Wales Cancer Research Centre, as well as groups across Wales who want to improve cancer diagnosis and treatment, including patients, members of the public and cancer researchers. It also builds on key strategic advice from a panel of external experts.
CReST focuses on six priority areas, including precision and mechanistic oncology, immuno-oncology and clinical trials, where there is already a track record of excellence in Wales, with the intention of developing them to be internationally leading.
Professor Mererid Evans, Director of Wales Cancer Research Centre, said, “The CReSt Strategy is helping the talented research community across Wales and beyond to work together to improve the way we detect, prevent and treat cancer and to build on the amazing research that is already happening across the country. As well as discovery science taking place within universities, clinical studies funded by non-commercial organisations or industry partners and delivered through the NHS are giving patients early access to promising new treatments. It is through these joined-up efforts to gather robust evidence that we can help current and future cancer patients to receive the best care.”
Developing “gold standard” cancer treatments
Health and Care Research Wales also continues to fund groundbreaking individual cancer studies.
One study into the role of a key protein found in one of the most common types of leukaemia, Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML), could pave the way for “gold-standard” lifesaving treatments in the future.
The research team, led by Professor Alex Tonks, of the Division of Cancer and Genetics at Cardiff University, observed that the protein, NFIC, appeared to be significantly higher in blood cancer cells of AML patients than in non-cancerous cells, and that NFIC is required for those cells to survive.
Professor Tonks said: “We would be the first to understand NFIC’s role in how AML develops. Once we have that understanding we can create treatments to tackle it.”
This precision therapy has already been used to great effect in treating Chronic Myelocytic Leukaemia (CML).
Professor Tonks explained: “Research developed a treatment for the cancer-causing protein in CML and the survival rate went from approximately 10% after five years to above 90%. That’s the gold standard we want to achieve for all the other different blood cancers.”
Key industry partnerships
Partnerships with industry form a key component of this collaborative approach in a number of areas of cancer care.
Professor Richard Adams, Director of Cancer Trials at the Centre for Trials Research at Cardiff University, said, “We are currently developing partnerships with companies such as Biontech and Moderna to develop new vaccines that may increase cancer cures. We are also already opening new studies for patients within Wales.
The QuicDNA study has recently been launched as a Welsh clinical assessment of liquid biopsies, a type of blood test for cancer, in partnership with multiple industry partners. This study is exploring the role of an NHS-based blood test performed in the All Wales Genomics Laboratories in Cardiff, to speed up the identification of patients with lung cancer so that they can start tailored treatment more rapidly. In this collaborative study we aim to recruit patients from across Wales and the Centre for Trials Research, collecting data to help us understand how this technology can improve patient care and by how much.
“Clinical research allows us to explore new treatments and care pathways for patients with cancer, and collaboration brings the best science and the best people together to deliver efficiently and effectively.”

In 2017-2018 the NHS treated 3.8 million wounds, costing £8.3 billion. Of this budget £5.6 billion (67%) was spent on chronic or hard-to-heal wounds, and costs are growing year-on-year, driven by increasing rates of comorbidities such as diabetes and antibiotic resistant infections. Despite this funding, 51% of these wounds remained unhealed 12 months after treatment initiation, and poor clinical outcomes are frequent. To address the problem a range of advanced wound dressings, negative pressure therapies and other solutions are available, however supply chain complexity and the number of available products is a severe vulnerability for healthcare providers.
Corryn Biotechnologies is developing a hand-held device to fabricate and deliver micro- and/or nano-fibrous dressings directly onto wounds at the point of care. These materials have been shown to improve wound outcomes, and development of a hand-held non-contact dressing system will allow direct application to a wider variety of patients whilst reducing energy consumption in sterilisation, packaging, and supply chain complexity of these advanced dressings.

Our experience with CNS clinical trials means that we can easily adapt to study protocols and timelines and also support trials in healthy and patient cohorts. Our technical services can be accessed on a study-by-study basis without the need for clients to make significant capital and human resource investments. Health Technology Wales was established by Welsh Government to produce national guidance on the use of non-medicine health and care technologies in Wales. HTW is funded by Welsh Government and hosted by Velindre University NHS Trust but is independent of both. Working in collaboration with partners across the health and care sectors, its multi-disciplinary team carries out health technology assessments of health or care technologies that are not a medicine and publishes national guidance on their use in Wales. For health this includes medical devices, diagnostic tests, surgical procedures, and psychological therapies. For social care this includes equipment or different models for supporting families, children, and adults. Since being founded in 2017 the team has rapidly expanded, as demand for technology solutions to solve the challenges facing health and care sectors increases. It has been at the forefront of COVID-19 research, since being appointed a Collaborating Partner of the Wales COVID-19 Evidence Centre, and it is now a Collaborating Partner of the Health and Care Research Wales Evidence Centre. The organisation has ambitious targets to increase its guidance output and continue driving improvements in population health and care services in Wales.

On 14-15 Sept 2023 we are also chairing the largest biomedical engineering conference in Swansea bringing together researchers and industries (https:// biomedeng.org/biomedeng23/).
