Social networking sites are especially designed to create relationships, friendships, and communities. Many students, as well as adults, are very interested in these types of interactions. Improper use of any type of technology can be detrimental to one’s career. Therefore, cyber safety is essential to the career of school employees. In this session the participants will explore: 1) proper boundaries when integrating technology into the learning environment and their personal life, 2) pitfalls associated with the use of technology, and 3) utilization of technology safely and within the bounds of policy and regulations. (All teachers, pre-service teachers, ESPs and administrators) True Colors Learn about True Colors, an asset-building model that answers the question: Why are people the way they are? Identify individual styles and explore the characteristics of dominant styles. Participants will learn how best to communicate with others who have conflicting personality traits, as well as how personality traits affect the school environment. This workshop will investigate the impact personality traits have on one’s teaching style and how best to work with a diverse group. Participants will learn what it takes to have a successful team and discover strategies that lead to positive team building, while deepening their understanding of working successfully with students’ personalities and learning styles. Instructional Advocacy and Professional Development The Tennessee Education Association (TEA) believes that continuous, high quality, meaningful professional development is required for education professionals to achieve and maintain the highest standards of student learning and professional practice. Offering professional development to help educators improve their skills, competencies and student learning is a goal of the Instructional Advocacy Division of TEA. The sessions listed are delivered by our Coordinators who are experienced and licensed teachers who travel to the work site of the educators. Most of the sessions are usually three hours in length. TEA works flexibly with individual groups of educators to help them succeed in reaching their goals. Follow-up sessions are often provided. Our Coordinators can also assist educators to discern what professional development best fits the needs identified in district or school-level improvement plans. The workshop has four objectives: • T o define the approaches to conflict resolution, using reflective listening and assertiveness for implementation in the school setting; • To understand strategies to manage and resolve conflict; • T o examine ways to guide students, teachers and education support professionals in extending conflict resolution skills beyond the classroom into their daily lives; and, • T o understand the different conflict styles. This session will give participants a brief overview of the five causes of dismissal/suspension, as well as an overview of test security, which is a reason many teachers are reprimanded or lose their teaching license. Certification PRAXIS I / Core This session for pre-education students will provide an overview of PRAXIS I / Core Math, Reading and Writing. Students will participate in a mock writing assessment and peer review utilizing the 6-point PRAXIS rubric. The objectives for the workshop are as follows: • Identify and apply classroom strategies for ELLs; • Discuss methods for adapting classroom assessments for ELLs; and, • Interpret ELL assessments and discuss student grouping. Others The Truth and Nothing But the Truth: Mistakes, Misdemeanors and Missed Income Don’t get in trouble for violating a rule, policy or law that you didn’t know existed! Know the rules, policies, procedures, and laws that govern various aspects of your classroom! This session will give participants a brief overview of the five causes of dismissal/suspension, as well as an overview of test security, which is a reason many teachers are reprimanded or lose their teaching license. Real life examples and documentation from across the state will be provided to give participants a clear understanding of what NOT to do! (Teachers and pre-service teachers, all grade levels) Cyber Safety Emails, text messages, social networking, phone conversations, surfing the web, etc. are all forms of communicating through the use of technology. Social networking sites are especially designed to create relationships, friendships, and communities. Many students, as well as adults, are very interested in these types of interactions. Improper use of any type of technology can be detrimental to one’s career. Therefore, cyber safety is essential to the career of school employees. The workshop has four objectives: • T o define the approaches to conflict resolution, using reflective listening and assertiveness for implementation in the school setting; • To understand strategies to manage and resolve conflict; • T o examine ways to guide students, teachers and education support professionals in extending conflict resolution skills beyond the classroom into their daily lives; and, • T o understand the different conflict styles. Best Practices: Knowing, Grouping, and Motivating Students This workshop examines best practices for knowing, grouping, and motivating students. The objectives for the workshop are as follows: • T o develop tools that will enable teachers to get to know their students and tailor instruction to meet their needs; • To learn different ways to group students effectively; and, • T o understand different ways to motivate students. (All teachers, all grade levels) Professionalism and Education: A Common Sense Approach This workshop will focus on what it means to look, interact and work like a professional. Participants will explore situations that might be encountered in the classroom, but may not have been presented in their formal teacher preparation program. Participants will also learn about legal implications of certain aspects in the teaching profession and the choices they make when interacting with students, parents and colleagues.
