If you will be studying in Mexico for more than 6 months, you must obtain a student visa from the Mexican consulate

1.

Consult the requirements on the website of the consulate of your choice.

2. Schedule an appointment via the MEXITEL system (mexitel.sre.gob.mx), via e-mail, or by visiting the consulate in person.

1. Passport with a least 6 months’ validity remaining. 2. Passport-size photograph (2.5 cm x 3 cm).

Requirements

3. Letter of acceptance from the university. 4. Proof of financial solvency (parents). 5. Payment of USD $40 fee (this fee may be subject to changes each year).

Visas are usually issued on the same day you apply for them, if and when you meet the requirements. However, this process may take between 1 and 10 days, which is why we would recommend beginning the application process opportunely.

Travel Documents

• The visa is stamped on your passport. • The visa can be used within a period of 6 months and is valid for entry into Mexico once within this timeframe. • Once you have entered Mexico, the visa is no longer valid.

Mexican Consular Visa

• You must show your visa at your point of entry at the Mexican airport when you arrive. • You will be given a Multiple Migration Form* (FMM) that is valid for 30 days. You must then exchange this for your temporary residency card.

*Everyone should receive this document upon entering Mexico.

Temporary Residency Card You have 30 calendar days from your arrival in Mexico to exchange your Multiple Migration Form for your temporary residency card.

Student Temporary Residency Card

• During this process, you are not permitted to leave Mexico unless you request an exit permit at least 10 days prior to travelling. • The card is valid for one year, and you must renew it on an annual basis. • You must visit the Immigration Office to sign documents and have your fingerprints taken. • The process to exchange your Multiple Migration Form for your temporary residency card may take between 4 and 6 weeks.

• If you lose your documents or they are stolen, you must notify the INM. You will then be given instructions about how to replace them.

Important points to consider if you travel outside Mexico

Always carry your passport and temporary residency card on you. You cannot leave Mexico without these documents.

We would also suggest carrying both documents if you leave the city, given that you may be asked to show them at checkpoints to show you are in the country legally. If you are unable to do so, you may be taken to an immigration office.

The renewal process begins 30 days prior to the date on which your card expires.

Annual Renewal

If you are not in Mexico when your card expires, you may still enter Mexico if and when no more than 55 days have elapsed since the date of expiration. You have 5 calendar days after returning to Mexico to begin the process.
