Located approximately 15 minutes outside of Palma de Mallorca in an exclusive community called Son Vida, the eponymously named Casa is an example of design poetry in motion. The completion of this remarkable home marks the arrival of third millennia architecture on the island of Mallorca. The task at hand was straightforward: take a very un-extraordinary existing Mediterranean villa constructed in the 60s and transform it into something extraordinary. The 800 m2 luxury villa transgresses the constraints of site and context, redefining luxury architecture as it is typified by the traditional and prolific Mediterranean and Tuscan styles otherwise found on the island.

Above: Entry to courtyard. Opposite page: Entry to house and glass-encased steel stair.
HOUSE ROCKENFELLER Lake Constance , Switzerland Located on the shores of Lake Constance, on the Swiss side, this home was created for a young race car driver and his wife. The home was design with the idea of living on the infinite plane between a virtual and actual lake. This was accomplished by the using of travertine flooring inside and out, and a large mirrored wall on the opposite side of the lake that relflects the image of the house and lake beyond it. The open floor plan and slim mullioned sliding glass doors create the perfect atmosphere for outdoor living and social gathers.

A pared down, simplified box structure, this 600m2 home makes the most of its secluded and private siting on a large private plot. The least avant garde of the Platinum Estates villas, thie modern home is nonetheless a dearture from the typical Mediterranean homes that abound on the island. Traditional boundaries are blurred in this rectilinear house with spaces flowing seamlessly between indoor and out. A master suite perches above the infinity pool allowing endless views across the surrounding hill tops. Structurally a box, this residence is anything but square.

tecDESIGN Residence and Office Lake Constance, Switzerland /瑞士康斯坦丁努斯湖 Overlooking Lake Constance towards the German shores, this mixed use development represents modern ideals of the Live-Work life. Transparent connections to the outdoors reveal the natural beauty of the region, as the office building’s mass in neatly tucked away into the hillside. Ample natural light perforates the spaces from large light wells. Photovoltaics, geothermal, day lighting, and passive heating and cooling techniques make this a very sustainable development.

Technically, the architecture of the hotel is executed in a very precise fashion. All areas of the building are carefully detailed to the most stringent of Swiss building codes and Minergie standards. The facade utilizes two layers of glass, interstitial sunshading and interior curtains and blinds to allow the building to be finely tuned to any daylighting and/or passive heating & cooling situations.

One of the most important features of the hotel is its conference and event center. These elements were carefully considered for appropriate adjacencies and ease of use. At 1,250 m2, the conference and event spaces were also designed for maximum flexibility. The main bannquet rooms can be combined into a larger conference space. There are rooms for small groups and large. The main event space is located on the second floor and has vehicle access via a specialized exterior elevator. The event space also has a separate entry area for bus-drop off. The conference area also has direct access to the exterior garden area, where full grown trees will be planted in an intensive green roof setup.

CLOUD NO. 7 Stuttgart, Germany When famous car designer Sergio Scaglietti was designing his legendary racing cars in the 1950s and 60s, he coined a phrase that also applies to architecture – an approach that we have adopted as our basic philosophy at our design studio in Los Angeles: It’s not only about form and function, but also the passion that it creates. Cloud No 7 is a project whose design was developed with passion, whose shape was drawn with the heart and soul of our designers and architects, with functionality meeting the highest standards – representing the state of the art in technology in building services and sustainability.

“THERE IS NO ICONOGRAPHIC NOTION FOR THE ‘GESTALT’ OF HI-TECH PRO6
DUCTION AND ENGINEERING FACILITIES” In the case of the Inotera Headquarters in Taipei this is achieved by infusing hi-tech requirements with emotional content. The all glass façade, typical for standard office buildings, is reinterpreted in light of Taiwan’s tradition of tile construction. Technology is thus explored in order to emulate cultural values and environmental aspects within a contemporary context. As there is no iconographic notion for the ‘Gestalt’ of hi-tech production and engineering facilities, the office building allows for its own expression; hundreds of shapes and colors portrait the formal complexity of natural elements such as the leaves of trees or ripples of water. An intricate assemblage of printed glass utilizing the latest glass printing technologies, structural glass and glass curtain wall systems, articulates a building that seeks to define its unique identity while assimilating local customs. In contrast to the transparent office structure, an attached fabrication facility provides a fantastic screen for a dadaesque ceramic tile composition that dilutes its scale by use of perspective geometries.

Ecological enhanced airflow system, by aerostatics roofs
The new Asia Pacific headquarters of Infineon Technologies, one of the world’s leading semiconductor companies, characterizes the Spirit of Infineon as a forward-thinking company. The project’s priority was to create an environment that stimulates and nurtures the thriving of ideas, and to set the framework for pursuing a unique architectural expression. Taking into consideration particular work ethics, industry dynamism and cultural diversity, the building reflects its specific context by use of unconventional materials, structural interpretations of local architecture and specific ecologic considerations.

In its composition, two organic shaped office towers emerge from a common public podium. A tensile roof structure transforms the space between the office towers into a grand, open atrium. This naturally ventilated zone acts as a climatic buffer, forming a transition between inside and outside. The building is wrapped with a system of fabric fins that not only shade the surface but also soften the contour of the building. This combination of form and texture creates a dynamic and almost mysterious appearance that stimulates an atmosphere of inspiration and lets the user partake in the creation of the company’s identity. The Singapore headquarters manifest Infineon’s venture into the Asia Pacific market, with the intention to symbolize the new Spirit that characterizes its establishment as a knowledge driven company. The project’s priority, creating an environment that stimulates and nurtures the thriving of ideas, sets the framework for pursuing unconventional architectural expressions. Taking into consideration the particular work ethic, social tendencies and cultural preferences, the building reflects its specific context by use of characteristic materials, structural interpretations of local architecture and specific ecologic considerations. Innovative design ideas are combined with low-energy solutions to meet the complex demands given by developing a sustainable headquarter building for the hi-tech company Infineon.

Stuttgart, Germany For companies today, the most important production factor is the knowledge possessed by its employees. This is what distinguishes the demands of modern working environments from the structures handed down from the industrial age. Today buildings and architectural structures are to provide employees with scope for innovation and creativity. With up to 7000 workstations, diverse office environments, a retail business, sports grounds, a civic park and spaces for the informal exchange of ideas, features of municipal structures are transferred to corporate headquarters. The division of the open spaces into, for example, park, campus, gardens, courtyards and terraces elucidates the concept of the campus town.

“THE DESIGN INVESTIGATES THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN STRUCTURE AND NATURE”
11
IFSZ, SUZHOU, CHINA Suzhou, China/ 蘇州,中國 The design investigates the relationship between structure and nature, a common theme in Chinese Landscape architecture. The work place is introduced to a unique garden-campus setting. The originally flat site has been elaborately sculptured to create a central pond as well as a perimeter earth berm lined with trees – a reference to the famous gardens of Suzhou. Landscape and architecture blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors.
