RED RAIDERS WRAP ONE OF TOP SEASONS IN NEARLY A DECADE In its first season under head coach Don Flora, the Texas Tech volleyball program turned a corner in 2011 with 15 wins, the school’s most since the 2001 season. TEXAS TECH TAKES STEP UP UNDER FLORA From the moment he accepted the job, Don Flora has stated that Texas Tech would become one of the top volleyball programs in the country. After only one season, the Red Raiders appear on their way to better things in 2012. Despite only 11 wins over the last three seasons combined, the Red Raiders wrapped the year 15-17 overall, boasting the third-largest win differential in the country from the 2010 to the 2011 season. Here is a rundown of the most improved programs this season: SCHOOL 2010 RECORD 2011 RECORD DIFFERENCE Samford 14-17 29-4 15 Tennessee-Martin 6-24 19-14 13 Texas Tech 4-25 15-17 11 San Francisco 5-22 16-13 11 Bowling Green 8-24 19-12 11 Long Island 10-21 21-13 11 Florida Gulf Coast 7-19 18-13 11 RPI ALSO TAKES A JUMP UNDER FLORA Thanks in part to its 15 wins on the year, Tech saw a drastic improvement in the ratings percentage index (RPI rankings) at season’s end, coming in at No. 113 nationally. The ranking is nearly 70 spots higher than a year ago when Tech finished 182nd nationally. The RPI rankings are widely used by the NCAA selection committee for postseason selections. RED RAIDERS RETURN MOST OF ROTATION IN 2012 Texas Tech fans will see several familiar faces when the 2012 season begins next August as 12 returners and two redshirts are expected to return. Among the group includes two of Tech’s top three attackers in Miara Cave and Breeann David along with libero Tory Vaughan. Middle blockers Aubree Piper and Dravon Rangel will also return for their junior seasons while Mikia Mills and Sam Podraza will both be sophomores. DOWDY NAMED TO ALL-BIG 12 FIRST TEAM For the second-straight year, Amanda Dowdy was named to the postseason All-Big 12 first team in a vote by the conference coaches. With the selection, Dowdy became just the first Tech player to earn first-team accolades twice in a career. Tech had not previously had a player selected to the first team since Kelly Johnson claimed the honor in 2002. The program had also been left off the postseason awards list since 2004 as well when Johnson earned honorable mention accolades. Dowdy joins a selective group of two-time allconference selections in Johnson, Lisa Hilgers and Melissa McGehee.

2011 TEXAS TECH MOST VALUABLE PLAYER AMANDA DOWDY • SENIOR • LEXINGTON, TEXAS (LEXINGTON) Like she has throughout her career, Amanda Dowdy once again led the Red Raiders during the 2011 season both on the attack and even on the back row. The senior led the squad with 454 kills while adding 350 digs and 50 blocks en route to posting 22 double-doubles on the year. Dowdy wrapped her career ranked second all-time in career kills and attempts, while putting her name among the top 10 in several single-season categories as well. The Lexington, Texas native will continue her career oversees as she has agreed to a professional contract with the Alemannia Aachen organization out of Germany shortly following the season. She will join the team in the coming weeks.

UNITED SPIRIT ARENA The United Spirit Arena, one of the finest multi-purpose venues in the country, is home to the Texas Tech basketball and volleyball programs. Constructed in 1999, the USA is named in honor of United Supermarkets, who was the project’s major donor. Since its creation, the 15,000 seat arena has hosted some of the top entertainment acts in the country, including George Strait, Brad Paisley, ZZ Top, and numerous others. DIRECTIONS TO THE UNITED SPIRIT ARENA The United Spirit Arena is located on the west part of the Texas Tech campus on Indiana Avenue. The facility is just off the Marsha Sharp Freeway and can also be accessed by the Texas Tech Parkway. FROM THE AIRPORT: Take I-27 South from Regis Street and exit west on the Marsha Sharp Freeway. Take the Texas Tech Parkway exit and turn south (left) for a quarter of a mile until you reach the first stop light (Indiana Ave.). MATCH NOTES ATTENDANCE RISES UNDER FLORA With a successful product on the floor, Tech fans flocked to the United Spirit Arena in large numbers throughout the season as the program averaged just over 800 fans during 11 home matches this season. The number is roughly 150 more fans than Tech averaged during the 2010 season and 300 more than the average from the 2009 season. BIG 12 PROVES TO BE ONE OF NATION’S TOUGHER CONFERENCES If one thing was evident from the 2011 season, the Big 12 is among the nation’s elite volleyball conferences. The league sent seven teams to the NCAA Championship, the second-most in conference history. Texas was one of three squads to earn national seeds, joining Iowa State (No. 4) and Texas A&M (No. 16) with the No. 1 seed overall. The Longhorns and Cyclones both advanced to the elite eight round while Kansas State upset No. 2 Nebraska in the second round to become the league’s third team to advance to the Sweet 16 round. RED RAIDERS BOAST WINS OVER TWO TOURNAMENT TEAMS Among the seven Big 12 schools to make the postseason, Tech defeated one of those, Baylor, in five sets on Oct. 26 for its second win of the year over an NCAA Championship squad. The other victory came Sept. 3 against Morehead State as part of the Texas Tech Invitational. The Red Raiders came close to dropping two other tournament teams in Oklahoma and Texas A&M, taking both teams to the brink before falling in five sets. Since 2005, Tech had previously defeated only two schools that made the postseason in the same year - UTSA (2010) and UNLV (2007). DOWDY REWRITES RECORD BOOK IN FINAL SEASON Amanda Dowdy’s final season in scarlet and black forever put her name in the Tech annuals. The senior wrapped her career ranked second all-time in career kills and attempts while also placing among the top 10 in several single-season categories as well. DOWDY ENTERS BIG 12 RECORD BOOK AS WELL In addition to her numerous spots in the Tech record book, Amanda Dowdy also left her name in the Big 12 almanac as well, wrapping her career ranked 10th all-time in attack attempts. Thanks to her 50 swings in the season finale against Missouri, Dowdy finished with 4,269 career attempts, four more than Nebraska’s Sarah Pavan during the 2004-07 seasons. MEYERS JOINS FELLOW SENIOR, GOOD FRIEND IN RECORD BOOK Like her good friend and fellow senior, Karlyn Meyers also concluded her time in scarlet and black with her best season to date. The China Spring, Texas native totaled 1,057 assists on the year, moving to sixth alltime on the school’s career chart in the process. Meyers finished just short of the 3,000 assists mark as she totaled 2,908 over her four seasons. Her career 7.90 assists per set average also ranked seventh all-time in school history. Meyers was just the first Tech to reach the 1,000 assist mark in a single season since Laura Grote in 2003. VAUGHAN WRAPS SUCCESSFUL SEASON AT LIBERO Tory Vaughan wrapped her first season back at the libero position with one the best campaigns in recent history. The junior totaled 409 digs on the year, becoming only the seventh player in school history to reach the 400 mark and the first since Desiree Batista in 2005. Her single-season total ranked seventh as well in the school record book. With a similar season in 2012, Vaughan stands a chance to enter the top 10 on the career chart as well as her 699 digs trail Ginger Carter (1991-94) by 393 for 10th all-time.

RECORD WATCH: DOWDY CHASING SEVERAL MILESTONES IN 2011 Senior Amanda Dowdy will not only be looking to end her Texas Tech career off on a high note this year, but she will also be chasing several program records. The Lexington, Texas native entered the year fifth alltime in career kills and sixth in career attacks. Dowdy is only the eighth player in school history to reach 1,000 kills over a career as she recorded 1,041 over her first three seasons. Dowdy also joined the top 10 last year on the single-season charts as her 424 kills ranked 10th alltime and her 1,286 attempts was sixth all-time. She also set the single-match record for kills a year ago as she finished with 37 against Colorado on Oct. 13 before nearing the feat again against the Buffaloes,

PRESEASON TALK PROVES TRUE FOR CAVE DURING JUNIOR SEASON If there was one consistent prior to the season, it was that Don Flora was excited to see how Miara Cave would perform during her junior year. After seeing her compete all spring, the first-year head coach strongly believed Cave was primed for a breakout season. He was right. The San Antonio finished with 298 kills on the year, second-most on the team, while posting a .231 hitting percentage that was significantly higher than her first two seasons combined. In addition to her offensive output, Cave also led the Red Raiders with 99 blocks on the year. She needs 85 blocks next year to tie Brande Brown (1994-97) for 10th all-time on the Tech career chart as she concluded the year with 203 over three seasons. TECH STILL AMONG NATIONAL BLOCK LEADERS The Red Raiders concluded the season ranked 14th nationally in blocks per set, averaging 2.76 per frame that was just percentage points behind Texas for the conference lead. Tech only averaged 2.18 blocks per set a year ago, marking another big improvement under first-year head coach Don Flora. HUSKEY EMERGES DURING BIG 12 PLAY The Red Raiders received a much-needed boost off the bench late in the year from backup setter Brandy Huskey, who entered the rotation as a defensive specialist on the back row. The sophomore posted doubledigit digs in five matches during Big 12 play, including a career-high 19 at Kansas State on Nov. 19. Huskey finished the year with 126 digs, doubling her total from her freshman season. DAVID FINDS SUCCESS DURING FRESHMAN SEASON After a successful prep career at nearby Denver City High School, Breeann David lived up to the high expectations during her inaugural season, finishing third on the team with 262 kills, the most for a Tech freshman since Amanda Dowdy totaled 301 in 2008. David posted 10 or more kills in 11 matches, including a careerhigh 17 against Oklahoma on Oct. 1. She wrapped the year with 44 kills over Tech’s final five matches. David also added 134 digs on the back row and 72 blocks on the net. She dropped her first career double-double Sept. 26 at New Mexico, totaling a then career-high 15 kills to go along with 12 digs. NOTABLES u Texas Tech’s 15 wins this year marks the school’s most in a single-season since going 14-15 during the 2002 season. u Tech has already surpassed its win total from the 2008-10 seasons combined as the Red Raiders won 11 games during those three years. u The Red Raiders have broken the 10-win barrier for the first time since the 2006 season when Tech finished 12-17 under Nancy Todd. u Tech is 11-9 in games away from Lubbock this season. The Red Raiders had not won at least 11 away or neutral site contests since 2000 when Tech finished with 12 wins away from Lubbock. u The Oklahoma match marked the first time Tech had taken a ranked opponent to five sets since falling to the Sooners, 3-2, on Oct. 11, 2006 at home. u The Red Raiders’ win over New Mexico was Tech’s 14th-straight over a non-conference opponent, the school’s longest such run since winning 22-straight over the course of the 1996-97 seasons. u The Red Raiders held their opponents to a combined .173 hitting percentage this season, which is the second-lowest in the Big 12. Iowa State led the conference as its opponents were hitting .165 while thirdplace Texas held the opposition to a .183 average. u The North Texas match snapped a seven-match streak where the Red Raiders had claimed a 3-0 sweep. The run was Tech’s longest since opening the 1998 season with eight-straight sweeps. u Texas Tech’s win over UT-Arlington marked the program’s third tournament title of the season, a feat that had not been previously accomplished since the 2000 season. u Tech has also held four of its opponents to a negative hitting percentage, which prior to the year had not been accomplished since facing Northwestern State on Sept. 2, 2010. 4

MATCH NOTES DOWDY NOT JUST AN OFFENSIVE PLAYER If Amanda Dowdy has proved one thing this season, it would be that her impact isn’t only felt on the attack. The senior was Tech’s leader in kills and trailed only Tory Vaughan for the team high in digs as well. One of the Big 12’s top performers in both categories, Dowdy posted a double-double in 22 of Tech’s 32 matches, giving her 36 for her career. She finished the year ranked fourth in the conference with 4.09 kills per set while her 3.15 digs per set average is just outside the top 10. PIPER ADDS TO OFFENSE SINCE RETURN After missing most of the month of October, Aubree Piper has made quite an impact on the Tech offense since returning to the lineup prior to the Baylor match on Oct. 26. In her seven matches since then, Piper has totaled 56 kills to go along with 23 blocks. She recorded 10 kills on Nov. 12 against Kansas in what is her current high since her return to the rotation. FLORA SIGNS FOUR DURING FALL PERIOD Don Flora added to the future of the Tech program over a week ago when he signed Emily Ehrle, Brianna Grant, Emily Ruetter, and Meghan Stacy to national letters of intent. The four signees will join with a talented group of preferred walk-ons next fall, giving Flora additional depth along the front row as he signed a group that consists of two outside hitters (Ehrle, Stacy), a middle blocker (Grant), and a setter (Reutter). WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES To say that all facets of Tech’s game have improved under head coach Don Flora might be an understatement. The Red Raiders have drastically improved their numbers from a year ago, raising totals in all six major statistics. Her dig output marked the most for a Tech player in the rally scoring era (2001-present) and the most since Ann Romjue set the school record with 36 digs against Texas A&M on Nov. 18, 2000. Vaughan joined Aubree Piper (Defensive on Sept. 6) and Breeann David (Newcomer on Sept. 12) as Tech’s three weekly award winners, the school’s most selections in a single season since 2002. FLORA MAKING QUICK CHANGES TO TECH Prior to his arrival, Texas Tech had only 11 wins over its last three seasons. Don Flora surpassed that total in mid-September. Now, the first-year head coach is aiming to put Tech in the midst of the Big 12 race as the Red Raiders have only won three conference matches during the past three years. TECH AMONG TOP 100 IN FIRST RPI POLL Tech was among the top 100 schools listed in the inaugural ratings percentage index poll released by the NCAA. The Red Raiders were picked 93rd overall, a step up from previous seasons when Tech would not have been among the top 100 ranked. Tech moved down 10 spots to 103rd overall in this week’s poll. RED RAIDERS SCORE COME-FROM-BEHIND WIN Tech’s come-from-behind win over New Mexico marked the second time this season the Red Raiders had overcome a deficit on the road. After winning the first set, Tech dropped the next two games before rallying to win the final two in the Red Raiders’ first five-set match of the year. Tech had previously overcome an early one-set deficit to defeat North Texas on Sept. 19 in Denton. RANGEL STEPS UP AT NEW MEXICO Dravon Rangel not only moved back into the starting lineup at New Mexico, but she also played a huge part in Tech’s 3-2 victory. The sophomore, who was starting in place of Aubree Piper, delivered a school-record 14 block assists in the match, breaking the previous single-match record of 11 that was last set by current director of operations Amy Gandy on Nov. 15, 2006 against Iowa State. RED RAIDERS BREAK BLOCKING MILESTONE Tech snapped a 19-year-old school record at New Mexico with 37 block assists against the Lobos, surpassing the previous milestone of 36 that was set against Utah State on Sept. 10, 1982. The Red Raiders finished with a season-high 19.5 blocks in the match as opposed to New Mexico’s six total. TECH OPENS CONFERENCE ATOP STANDINGS After a successful start to the season, Tech began Big 12 action atop the conference standings for the first time since 1997 with a 13-1 record. The Red Raiders, who were also 13-1 at that point, finished the 1997 season 23-11 overall, barely missing out on the NCAA Tournament. The California native passed Donna Martin, who led Tech to a 12-2 start in 1985 as the Red Raiders eventually ended the year 19-9 overall. Flora entered the year as one of the winningest coaches all-time in NCAA history after compiling a 269-59 record over 11 seasons at the University of La Verne in California. SENIORS ENJOYING FINAL SEASON AT TECH Seniors Amanda Dowdy and Karlyn Meyers have to be enjoying their final season in a Texas Tech uniform. The duo won a combined 11 games over their first three seasons, one less than Tech’s total so far this year. Don Flora marked the fourth head coach to lead the duo as the co-captains started their careers under Nancy Todd in 2008. Now, Dowdy and Meyers are off to one of the best seasons in school history while both are also climbing the Tech record book in several categories. DAVID ADDS TO WEEKLY AWARD WINNERS Breeann David became the second Texas Tech player to earn a Big 12 weekly award this week as she was named the conference Rookie of the Week on Monday. David joins teammate Aubree Piper as a weekly award winner after Piper earned Defensive Player of the Week honors a week ago. It marked the first time in school history that two different players had been honored in the same season. PIPER HONORED ON BIG 12 WEEKLY AWARDS Prior to Tuesday night’s match at Texas-Pan American, sophomore Aubree Piper was named the Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week for

her performance during the Texas Tech Invitational. Piper finished with 21 blocks to go along with 15 kills on the weekend, matching her single-game highs for total blocks and block assists in the process. No Tech player had been previously honored with a Big 12 weekly award since Amanda Dowdy was named the conference Rookie of the Week on Sept. 15, 2008. DOWDY LEADS TECH ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Amanda Dowdy was one of three Red Raiders named to the Texas Tech Invitational all-tournament team as the senior picked up most valuable player honors. Fellow senior Karlyn Meyers and junior Miara Cave were also honored as the Red Raiders claimed the tournament title following a 3-0 weekend. DOWDY, CAVE MAKE ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Texas Tech senior Amanda Dowdy and junior Miara Cave were both named to the TCU Invitational AllTournament team after leading the Red Raiders to a second-place showing. MORE BALANCE, BETTER RESULTS If there was one consistent variable in Tech’s opening weekend, it would be that the Red Raiders have more balance on offense. The trio of Amanda Dowdy, Miara Cave, and Breeann David all had at least 10 kills each in both of the first two matches. In the process, Tech’s hitting percentage rose to a .256 average over three matches, including a .388 mark against UConn, the Red Raiders’ highest attacking percentage since defeating South Florida in three sets on Sept. 9, 2006. DAVID JOINS ELITE COMPANY Since the Red Raiders joined the Big 12 in 1996, no Tech freshman has begun her career with double-

digit kill figures in back-to-back matches. That is until Breeann David. The Denver City product finished with 11 kills against TCU and followed with 14 the following day against UConn. David finished with a .500 hitting percentage against UConn as she was 14-for-24 on the attack en route to posting Tech’s highest individual hitting percentage since Barbara Conceicao recorded a .526 average on Sept. 11, 2009 against Gonzaga. DOWDY NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-BIG 12 Senior Amanda Dowdy was recognized prior to the season as Tech’s only selection on the Preseason All-Big 12 team. Dowdy was among the top offensive players in the conference a year ago en route to be selected to the All-Big 12 first team following the season. This marks the second-straight season Dowdy has been honored on the preseason and first as a unanimous selection. MEYERS ADDS EXPERIENCE AT SETTER With such a young roster, the Red Raiders will rely on senior setter Karlyn Meyers at the setter position. A two-year starter, Meyers is one of the mostaccomplished setters in school history as she is already among the top 10 all-time in career assists and assists per set average. RED RAIDERS WILL BE YOUNG Texas Tech will be one of the younger teams in the country as 15 of the program’s 21 players are listed as either a freshman or sophomore. Two of the squad’s six upperclassmen, juniors Ciara Gibson and Kelly Chiffer, will both redshirt this season, giving the Red Raiders only four upperclassmen on the court - seniors Amanda Dowdy and Karlyn Meyers and juniors Miara Cave and Tory Vaughan.

HEAD COACH DON FLORA tory, Flora established a winning culture unmatched by many as the Leopards recorded only one losing season during his tenure - his first season in 1998. La Verne posted at least 20 wins in nine-straight seasons beginning in 2000 as the Leopards claimed nine-straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles. During Flora’s tenure, the Leopards were 140-10 in SCIAC matches, boasting an impressive .933 winning percentage. La Verne posted undefeated 14-0 campaigns in league play five times in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, and 2008. As the success kept building early in Flora’s tenure, so did the achievements at the national level. In only Flora’s fourth season, the Leopards wrapped a nearperfect 27-1 season with the 2001 NCAA Division III National Title, the second in school history. The title run earned Flora the Division III National Coach of the Year honor by both the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and Volleyball Magazine. He was also named the AVCA West Region Coach of the Year, an award he was presented three more times in his tenure following the 2003, 2005, and 2008 seasons.

With a national title under his belt, Flora’s success kept rolling as the Leopards eventually posted their first 30-win season in 2003, which began a streak of three-straight seasons where La Verne advanced to the NCAA Final Four. The Leopards posted a schoolrecord 33 wins a season later. The Leopards posted 27 wins in each of Flora’s final three seasons at the school, which culminated in another national title match appearance in 2008. Unlike 2001, however, La Verne was topped in the championship, falling to Emory in four sets.

In his spare time, Flora is heavily involved the USA High Performance along with various club circuits and junior development programs in the southwest region and across the nation. His multi-faceted summer camps are among the nation’s finest youth programs and have become a popular event in Lubbock since his arrival. Flora, a native of Covina, Calif., and his wife, Jeanne, currently reside in Lubbock with their two daughters, Annika and Alexis. Jeanne Flora is a highly-regarded professor in the field of Family and Interpersonal Communications. She will continue to teach via video teleconference for New Mexico State where she has worked the past two years.

The match ended up to being Flora’s final one with the Leopards, wrapping a successful tenure that included a 25-8 mark in NCAA Tournament matches. La Verne wrapped the year ranked in the top 10 nationally for the ninth-consecutive season which had only been done by two other programs during that span.

One of the top coaching prospects in the country following the 2010 season, Flora arrives at Tech with a 269-59 career record during his 11 seasons as the head coach at the University of La Verne in California.

Flora actually got his start in coaching with the La Verne men’s program in 1993, leading the squad for five seasons while also assisting with the women’s program that was under renowned coach Jim Paschal at that time. He would take over as the head coach of the women’s team prior to the 1998 season. As if coaching was not enough, Flora was also involved with another significant arm of the athletics department – fundraising. He was named the Assistant Athletics Director in charge of Development in 1994, a position he would hold until 2007.

Entering the 2011 season, Flora currently ranks as the 12th winningest coach all-time among those with 10 years of experience at any level of NCAA play. His .820 career winning percentage is 15th among active coaches with five years of experience and third all-time at the Division III level. The California native comes to Tech following a two-year stint as an assistant coach at New Mexico State where the Aggies, consistently one of the top programs nationally, compiled a 38-22 record. Flora was responsible for recruiting activities, practice instruction and game strategy and was involved in the daily development of the overall program under head coach Mike Jordan. The desire to eventually become a head coach at the Division I level was enticing enough for Flora to leave his alma mater at La Verne following the 2008 season. Flora graduated with a degree in social sciences from La Verne in 1990 before later returning to the classroom to earn his masters in the Leadership and Management curriculum.
