The Red Raiders also bring back a veteran defensive back in DaMarcus Fields, who ranks second among returning FBS players with 38 career passes defended. n
THE YEAR OF THE SUPER SENIOR
IN THEIR WORDS
After a year full of new terms like social distancing and contact tracing, the 2021 football season will add another one for fans and media to learn Super Seniors. Texas Tech will have 10 super seniors on its roster this next fall, which describes players who elected to use an extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA for the 2020 season. n According to research by the Associated Press, Texas Tech leads the Big 12 Conference with its 10 super seniors as the Red Raiders bring back nine players from their 2020 team to go along with graduate transfer T.J. Storment, who arrives in Lubbock from Big 12 rival TCU. n
Throughout this spring and summer, Texas Tech will publish a series of first-person narritives from various Red Raiders appropriately titled “In My Words.” Texas Tech began the series last summer during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting several offthe-field stories. The series included stories from Jaylon Hutchings and his journey to recover from a knee injury that ended his junior year of high school as well as Tony Bradford Jr. in the weeks that followed the killing of George Floyd. Each of these stories can be found via @TexasTechFB on Twitter and on the student-athletes on Twitter pages.

SPRING PROSPECTUS | 2021 TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL
WELLS ENTERS THIRD YEAR AT TECH n Matt Wells will look to return the Red Raiders to bowl eligibility in his third season leading the program as Texas Tech will be searching for its first postseason appearance since traveling to the Birmingham Bowl during the 2017 season. n The Red Raiders will conduct 15 practices this spring in total, beginning March 15 and culminating on April 17 with the annual Spring Game inside Jones AT&T Stadium. The Spring Game is slated for a 1 p.m. kickoff that afternoon. n This spring is an important one for Wells and his staff as they continue to create a developmental program with the Red Raiders. Texas Tech was limited to only four spring practices a year ago before the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the Red Raiders’ remaining slate. CUMBIE RETURNS HOME AS OC n Texas Tech fans will recognize and old but familiar face roaming the sidelines next fall as former quarterback and assistant coach Sonny Cumbie was hired in December as the Red Raiders’ new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. n Cumbie, who spent the past seven seasons at Big 12 counterpart TCU, returns to his alma mater where he was the starting quarterback in 2004 before later serving as a graduate assistant in 2009 and then an assistant coach from 2010-13. n A native of nearby Snyder, Texas, Cumbie helped TCU boast the Big 12’s second-best conference record (38-25) and third-best overall mark (58-30) over his seven seasons, which coincided with six bowl appearances. WHAT RETURNS FOR THE RED RAIDERS n Texas Tech returns the bulk of its starters from a year ago, including its leading rusher in SaRodorick Thompson and leading receiver Erik Ezukanma. The Red Raiders boast seven starters returning on the offensive side of the ball and eight more on defense. Texas Tech also brings back its main specialists as well in punter Austin McNamara and kickers Jonathan Garibay and Trey Wolff. n Texas Tech’s list of returning starters does not include several Red Raiders who made multiple starts a year ago, including the likes of linebacker Brandon Bouyer-Randle, quarterback Henry Colombi, inside receiver Myles Price, inside receiver Dalton Rigdon, offensive lineman Caleb Rogers, defensive back Dadrion Taylor Demerson and defensive lineman Tyree Wilson. n Below is a breakdown of the percentage the Red Raiders return in each statistical category: BREAKDOWN OF WHAT RETURNS FOR THE RED RAIDERS Category Percentage Rushing Yards 99.3% Passing Yards 39.9% Receiving Yards 70.4% Scoring 78.9% Total Offense 62.6% All-Purpose Yards 81.5% Tackles 81.5% Tackles for Loss 85.3% Sacks 82.0% Interceptions 46.0% Pass Breakups 79.4% Forced Fumbles 100% Fumble Recoveries 100% Punt Return Yards 100% Kickoff Return Yards 64.5% Field Goals 100% Punting Yards 100% TEXAS TECH STARTERS RETURNING FOR 2021 SEASON Offense Defense Ethan Carde (OL) Jaylon Hutchings (DL) Weston Wright (OL) Tony Bradford Jr. (DL) Dawson Deaton (OL) Riko Jeffers (LB) Josh Burger (OL) Krishon Merriweather (LB) SaRodorick Thompson (RB) Colin Schooler (LB) Travis Koontz (TE) Jacob Morgenstern (LB) Erik Ezukanma (WR) Eric Monroe (DB) DaMarcus Fields (DB) Note: Starters determined using most starts per position
A NEW TERM FOR 2021 - SUPER SENIORS n Media and fans alike will likely hear a new term throughout the 2021 season - Super Seniors. The phrase describes many of the seniors across the country who decided to utilize the extra year granted by the NCAA for the 2020 season. n For Texas Tech, the Red Raiders lead the Big 12 Conference with 10 super seniors according to recent research by the Associated Press. The list of returnees includes nine players that were on Tech’s roster this past fall as well as one other in T.J. Storment, who transferred to join the Red Raiders this spring following one season at TCU. n According to the Associated Press’ research, Texas Tech is tied for ninth among power-five programs with 10 super seniors as the Red Raiders only trail the likes of Illinois (17), Arizona State (14), USC (14), Rutgers (13), Pittsburgh (12), Arizona (11), Utah (11) and Tennessee (11). GETTING OLDER... n One of the goals for Matt Wells and his staff upon their arrival in Dec. 2018 was making the Red Raiders older as a roster. They have done just that, bringing in 19 scholarship transfers from fouryear colleges during that span, including 14 that appear on the 2021 roster. n One area, in particular, Wells and his staff have taken advantage of is transfers with multiple years of eligibility remaining as Texas Tech has signed 14 players in his tenure that will ultimately play multiple seasons for the Red Raiders. That total includes nine Red Raiders who are entering their second season as a Red Raider this season and three more who will have multiple seasons of eligibility after arriving in Lubbock this January. n Texas Tech has signed the bulk of its transfers from other power-five schools under Wells as 14 players have arrived after playing in the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, SEC or Pac-12. All five of Texas Tech’s transfer additions for this season came from power-five schools as the Red Raiders signed the likes of Malik Dunlap (N.C. State), Jesiah Pierre (Florida), T.J. Storment (TCU), Marquis Waters (Duke) and Rayshad Williams (UCLA). n Both Storment and Waters were considered instant-impact signees for the Red Raiders as Storment garnered All-Big 12 second team honors by the Associated Press this past season at TCU, while Waters started 35 games over his Duke career, totaling 234 tackles and three interceptions during that time. n Over his first two seasons leading the Red Raiders, four-year college transfers into the program under Wells have accounted for 84 starts. THOMPSON, EZ HIGHLIGHT RETURNERS n New offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie will benefit from the return of both Texas Tech’s leading rusher in SaRodorick Thompson and its leading receiver in Erik Ezukanma. Thompson paced the Red Raiders on the ground in 2020, totaling 610 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, while Ezukanma secured 46 catches for 748 yards and six touchdowns. n Thompson and Ezukanma also led the Red Raiders in both categories as freshmen in 2019, making them the first duo to lead the team in rushing and receiving in back-to-back seasons since the 2014-15 campaigns when current Miami Dolphins tandem DeAndre Washington and Jakeem Grant helped Tech rank among the nation’s top offenses. n Additionally, this is the first time in school history where a pair of teammates have led the Red Raiders in both rushing and receiving yards during their freshman and sophomore seasons. MAKING IT LOOK E-Z n Through two seasons, Erik Ezukanma has established himself among the Big 12’s top wide receivers as he has caught 90 passes for 1,460 yards and 11 touchdowns during that span. He led the Red Raiders with 46 receptions for 748 yards and six touchdowns this past season en route to becoming the first Red Raider wide receiver to garner All-Big 12 first team honors since two-time Biletnikoff Award winner Michael Crabtree in 2008. n Ezukanma will enter his junior season as the Big 12’s returning leader in receiving yards per game as he ranked second in the league after averaging 74.8 yards, trailing only departed Oklahoma State standout Tylan Wallace and his 92.2 yards per game. Ezukanma averaged 10 more yards per game more than any other returning Big 12 wide receiver as he also ranked third in the league for total receiving yards. BIG 12 RETURNING LEADERS IN RECEIVING YARDS PER GAME Name (School) YPG 1. Erik Ezukanma (Texas Tech) 74.8 2. Xavier Hutchinson (Iowa State) 64.2 3. Marvin Mims (Oklahoma) 55.5 4. Sneed (Baylor) 55.2 PLENTY OF EXPERIENCE ALONG O-LINE n Steve Farmer returns the bulk of his position room this spring as the Red Raiders bring back four starters on the offensive line, including All-Big 12 second team selection Dawson Deaton at center. Texas Tech boasts 65 career starts as a Red Raider among its offensive line and 109 career starts when you factor in a pair of transfers such as Josh Burger and T.J. Storment. n Deaton, a two-year starter at center, ranks second on the team with 24 career starts, trailing only DaMarcus Fields and his 38 career starts among returners. Deaton became the first Red Raider to earn All-Big 12 first or second team accolades this past fall since Dylan Gandy was also a second-team honoree in 2004. n In addition to Deaton, the Red Raiders also benefit from the return of junior Weston Wright and senior Josh Burger, who both started in all 10 games this past fall. Wright has now started in each of his last 18-consecutive games, while Burger has been the starter at right tackle in 35-straight games dating back to his time at Wofford. He transferred to Texas Tech prior to the 2020 season.
At the left tackle position, the Red Raiders return its top two starters from this past year as junior Ethan Carde earned seven starts, while sophomore Caleb Rogers, as only a true freshman at the time, made the start in the final three games. n Texas Tech’s lone departure from the starting rotation was junior Jack Anderson, who declared for the 2021 NFL Draft following four years as a Red Raider. He will look to become the second Red Raider offensive lineman to join the NFL ranks in as many years after Terence Steele started in 14 games at right tackle this past season as a rookie for the Dallas Cowboys. n Anderson joined Deaton as an All-Big 12 selection this past fall as he was recognized on the first team by the conference coaches. It marked the first time since 1999 where Texas Tech has featured an All-Big 12 first and second team honoree along its offensive line as Jonathan Gray (first team) and Curtis Lowery (second team) were recognized that season. THE QUARTERBACK CANDIDATES
Following the departure of Alan Bowman this offseason, Matt Wells and new offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie will begin their search for a new signal caller this spring. Bowman made 16 starts over his Red Raider career, leaving Texas Tech with only one player currently on its roster who has a collegiate start in his career (Henry Colombi). Texas Tech currently has five candidates on its roster with the possibility to add another in the coming months. Below is a breakdown of the Red Raiders’ quarterback room entering spring practices.
HENRY COLOMBI | SR. Colombi returns for his second season at Texas Tech as he transferred from Utah State last summer prior to preseason practices. Colombi threw for 1,065 yards and eight touchdowns last season, while making four starts in six total appearances. He completed 65.7 percent of his passes, while also rushing 51 times for 103 yards and a touchdown.

MAVERICK MCIVOR | SO. McIvor is entering his third season at Texas Tech after signing with the Red Raiders as part of the 2019 class. He was listed as a backup at quarterback throughout the 2020 season and redshirted the 2019 campaign due to an injury. The son of former Texas quarterback Rick McIvor, he was rated among the top 20 dual-threat quarterbacks nationally out of San Angel Central.
TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL | WE. US. OUR.
BEHREN MORTON | FR. Morton is in his first semester on the Red Raider roster as he signed with Texas Tech this past December with an intention of enrolling in time for spring practices. A four-star prospect out of Eastland High School, Morton became the highest-rated quarterback to ever sign with the Red Raiders after totaling more than 8,800 passing yards and 80 touchdowns in high school.
DONOVAN SMITH | R-FR. Smith joined the Red Raiders out of local Frenship High School as part of Texas Tech’s 2020 signing class. Originally from Las Vegas, Smith played his senior year at Frenship, throwing for 3,123 yards and 25 touchdowns while rushing for 489 yards and 13 scores. The son of running backs coach DeAndre Smith, the younger Smith missed the 2020 season with an injury.
BRYLON LAWSON-YOUNG / PARKER MCNEIL The final two candidates are sophomore walkon Brylon Lawson-Young, a local product out of Lubbock Monterey High School and Dodge City Community College, and Parker McNeil, a transfer from Troy. McNeil was a first team All-America selection at Navarro College in 2019 following his second-consecutive season of leading the NJCAA in passing yards.
SPRING PROSPECTUS | 2021 TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL
PLENTY OF EXPERIENCE RETURNS ON D n Keith Patterson might have his most experienced defense of his tenure in 2021 as the third-year defensive coordinator brings back eight starters as well as the majority of his two-deep. Overall, Texas Tech’s 2021 defense will feature eight players with 10 or more starts over their career and three players with at least 200 tackles for their career. n Between returning linebackers Colin Schooler and Riko Jeffers and newcomer Marquis Waters, Patterson will have three players with plenty of experience as all three have recorded more than 200 tackles for their careers. In fact, Texas Tech is the only FBS program in the country with three players on its 2021 roster that currently boast 225 or more tackles. n Waters will be a welcome addition to the Red Raider secondary as he arrives as a three-year starter from Duke where he made 234 tackles as a safety. He made 35 starts during his time as a Blue Devil, which coincided with the tenure of Texas Tech second-year associate head coach and secondary coach Derek Jones, who departed the Duke staff following the 2018 season. He was second overall with 6.5 tackles for loss en route to earning All-Big 12 honorable mention accolades. n Merriweather will be the Texas Tech’s returning leader in tackles per game when the 2021 season kicks off next September as he averaged 8.3 stops per game last year. He ranked third overall in the category, trailing only West Virginia’s Tony Fields II and TCU’s Garret Wallow, who both departed for the NFL this offseason. n Texas Tech boasts two of the top-six returners in tackles per game from a year ago as Colin Schooler averaged 7.0 stops per game in 2020 to rank ninth overall. Tech and Oklahoma State are the only two league schools with two of the top-six returning players in the category. n Merriweather arrived at Texas Tech as one of the top junior-college prospects in the country as he earned NJCAA first team All-America honors in 2019 after leading the country with 153 tackles. He picked the Red Raiders over offers from the likes of Arkansas and Oklahoma State. BIG 12 RETURNING LEADERS IN TACKLES PER GAME Name (School) Avg. Krishon Merriweather (Texas Tech) 8.3 Mike Rose (Iowa State) 8.0 Malcoln Rodriguez (Oklahoma State) 7.7 Tre Sterling (Oklahoma State) 7.4 Josh Chandler Semedo (West Virginia) 7.1 Colin Schooler (Texas Tech) 7.0
STILL MORE FOOTBALL TO BE PLAYED n It didn’t take long for Seth Collins to decide he would return for a seventh season. The super senior made his decision before the Red Raiders played their final game of the 2020 season, simply stating he had plenty more football left in him. n Collins, who was sidelined with an injury after the first four games, moved to the secondary following the season opener against Houston Baptist, a position he will remain for his final year of eligibility. Collins approached Matt Wells and his staff about the position switch as he saw increased time in the secondary last season and was a standout on special teams, finishing tied for the team high with four tackles on kickoff coverage alone. n It’s the third position switch of Collins’ career as he was previously a quarterback at Oregon State as a true freshman in 2015 before transitioning to wide receiver a year later. He transferred to Texas Tech prior to the 2018 campaign and remained a wide receiver, catching 33 passes for 322 yards and a pair of touchdowns during that time, the bulk of which that came in his debut season. FIELDS TO THE PROS n Not many defensive backs in the Big 12 yet alone the country have likely seen as much playing time as DaMarcus Fields the past four seasons. Fields, entering his sixth and final season as a Red Raider, leads the team with 38 career starts at Texas Tech from his spot at cornerback where he has recorded 174 tackles, four interceptions and 38 passes defended over his career. n Fields led the Big 12 and ranked fourth in the FBS this past season after averaging 1.4 passes per game. He is third among returning FBS players in the category, trailing only the averages of Maryland’s Tarheeb Still and Michigan’s Germon Green. n For his career, Fields ranks second among returning FBS players with his 38 passes defended, which trails only the 46 of Devin Taylor from Virginia Tech. His total ranks third among Red Raiders since 2000 as Justis Nelson (2013-16) had 39 over his career, while Jamar Wall (2006-09) recorded 43. BACK TO SCHOOL(ER) n Texas Tech will boast the nation’s active leader in both tackles and tackles for loss entering the 2021 season as Colin Schooler returns for his final collegiate season. Schooler, who arrived at Tech as a graduate transfer in the weeks leading up to the 2021 season, has totaled 375 tackles over his career, which includes 51.0 that have gone for a loss. n Schooler, a Freshman All-America honoree and the Pac-12 Freshman Defensive Player of the Year in 2017, will enter his final collegiate season as the FBS active leader in both career tackles and career tackles for loss. Schooler will need 5.0 tackles for loss during the 2021 season to join the all-time leaders in FBS history as he will match Cincinnati’s Antwan Peek (2000-02) and Michigan’s Brandon Graham (2006-09) for 24th all-time in FBS history. THE OFFENSIVE STANDARD
Texas Tech has long been considered the offensive standard since the Red Raiders moved to a passing attack in 2000. In fact, the numbers don’t lie when it pertains to the high-octane Red Raider offense. Below is where Texas Tech ranks nationally in several offensive categories since the start of the 2000 season: TOTAL YARDS Oklahoma 130,686 Texas Tech 128,027 Boise State 123,169 Oregon 121,898 Clemson 119,834 PASSING YARDS Texas Tech 97,631 Hawaii 86,232 Oklahoma 78,117 Washington State 77,296 Houston 77,032 TOTAL TOUCHDOWNS Oklahoma 1,396 Boise State 1,372 Oregon 1,292 Texas Tech 1,244 Ohio State 1,190 PASSING TOUCHDOWNS Texas Tech 774 Oklahoma 675 Hawaii 664 Boise State 610 Southern California 607 PASSING COMPLETION PERCENTAGE Texas Tech 66.1 Boise State 65.0 Oklahoma 63.8 Southern California 63.8 Western Kentucky 62.7
MCNAMARA A FIXTURE IN RECORD BOOK n Austin McNamara has quickly become a fixture in the Texas Tech record book in only two seasons as the junior punter already owns two of the top five single-season averages in program history as well as the longest punt by any Big 12 player in league history. His success will make him a sure candidate for the Ray Guy Award entering the 2021 season. n McNamara wrapped the 2020 season averaging an impressive 46.3 yards per punt, the second-highest clip in school history behind only the 46.8 average compiled by Mark Bounds in 1991. He previously averaged 45.0 yards per punt as a true freshman in 2020, which now ranks fifth in program history. He is the only Red Raider with two of the top-five punting averages currently in the school record book. n McNamara set social media on fire midway through the 2020 season with his booming 87-yard punt against West Virginia, which marked the longest by an FBS kicker since 2017 and the longest in Texas Tech and Big 12 history. McNamara broke the Texas Tech single-game record for the longest punt that was previously set by R.W. Moyers in 1945 against West Texas State. Moyers launched an 85-yard punt in the win, which is the only other punt of 80 yards or longer in school history. He broke the previous Big 12 record of 85 yards that was set by Oklahoma’s Tress Way in 2010 against Utah State. n McNamara closed the 2020 season ranked fifth in the FBS for punting average and fourth among punters who played in at least five games. He was easily the Big 12 leader in punting as his average was five yards higher than any other specialist, earning him All-Big 12 first team honors for a second-consecutive season. He became the first Red Raider since Le’Raven Clark in 2014-15 to collect first team honors in consecutive seasons and the first Tech specialist to do so during the Big 12 era. NEW KIDS ON CAMPUS n Texas Tech welcomed several new additions to campus this January between mid-year scholarship transfers and four high school signees who chose to graduate early to join the Red Raiders for spring practices. Those four high school enrollees are all on the offensive side of the ball in wide receiver Jerand Bradley, tight ends Jed Castles and Mason Tharp and quarterback Behren Morton, the highest-rated signal caller to ever sign at Texas Tech. n Texas Tech also solidified its depth on defense with mid-year enrollees, signing defensive backs Malik Dunlap from N.C. State, Marquis Waters from Duke and Rayshad Williams from UCLA as well as linebacker Jesiah Pierre of Florida. n The offensive line also received a needed boost with the addition of TCU transfer T.J. Storment, an All-Big 12 second team selection by the Associated Press this past season, and Coffeyville C.C. transfer Matt Keeler. ANOTHER MCPHEARSON AT TECH n Texas Tech will have another member of the McPhearson family on its roster this fall as Ezekiel McPhearson, the older brother of 2020 All-Big 12 first team selection Zech McPhearson, joined the program this offseason as a walk-on transfer. Ezekiel McPhearson arrives from De Anza College where he spent the fall semester after previously playing minor-league baseball as part of the Arizona Diamondbacks system. He was a fourth-round draft pick by Arizona in 2013. ABOUT THE 2021 SCHEDULE n Texas Tech will officially kick off the 2021 season Sept. 4 when the Red Raiders travel to Houston for the Texas Kickoff at NRG Stadium. It will be the Red Raiders’ second all-time appearance in the neutral-site contest as Tech previously fell to Ole Miss to start the 2018 season. n The Red Raiders will open their season with a neutral-site contest for only the fifth time in program history and just the second time since 1959. In addition to the 2018 contest versus Ole Miss, Texas Tech previously met Texas A&M in Dallas to start the 195859 seasons and then Oklahoma City to face then Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State) to open the 1940 campaign. n The Houston game is one of five contests inside the state of Texas over the Red Raiders’ front half of the schedule as Texas Tech will host Stephen F. Austin (Sept. 11), Florida International (Sept. 18) and TCU (Oct. 9) during that span with road games at Houston, Texas (Sept. 25) and West Virginia (Oct. 2). n Texas Tech will open Big 12 Conference play with back-to-back road games at Texas and West Virginia, marking the first time since 2014 where the Red Raiders started their league slate on the road for the first two contests. Tech also opened the 2002 and 2004 seasons with consecutive road games to start conference play (no neutral sites), both of which resulted in at least eight wins overall. n Texas Tech will play nine-straight games to start its season before experiencing its lone open week on the 2021 season, which comes Nov. 6 prior to back-to-back home games versus Iowa State and Oklahoma State. It is the furthest Tech has had to wait for an open date since 2015 when the Red Raiders lone weekend off came prior to the regular-season finale at Texas. LOOKING FOR BIG 12 WIN NO. 100 n Texas Tech will enter the 2021 campaign searching for its 100th all-time Big 12 Conference victory since joining the league as a charter member in 1996. The Red Raiders, who open their league slate Sept. 25 at Texas, are 99-111 over the course of their 25 seasons in the Big 12. n The Red Raiders boast the fifth-highest win total in Big 12 games over the course of the league’s history as Texas Tech trails only the totals of Oklahoma (159), Texas (140), Kansas State (122) and Oklahoma State (113). ALL-TIME BIG 12 CONFERENCE VICTORIES School Wins 1. Oklahoma 159 2. Texas 140 3. Kansas State 122 4. Oklahoma State 113 5. Texas Tech 99 EIGHT RED RAIDERS SET FOR PRO DAY n Texas Tech will have eight of its former players participate in its annual Pro Day event on April 7, which will be held inside the Sports Performance Center. The list of participants includes departed seniors Thomas Leggett, Zech McPhearson, T.J. Vasher and Eli Howard as well as junior Jack Anderson, who forego his remaining eligibility to declare for the 2021 NFL Draft. n In addition to the five aforementioned athletes, Texas Tech will welcome back Douglas Coleman III and R.J. Turner, two members of its 2019 team, as well as Tre King from its 2018 roster. Coleman and Turner were both unable to work out in front of NFL scouts following their senior season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Coleman eventually signed as a free agent with the Denver Broncos but did not make the 53-man roster this past year.
SPRING PROSPECTUS | 2021 TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL
WE, US, OUR: RED RAIDERS IN THE LUBBOCK COMMUNITY
Since his hire at Texas Tech, Matt Wells has stressed the Red Raiders will be heavily involved in the community. That initiative was so important, in fact, that one of his first hires was a former teammate of his in Troy Kema as the football program’s Associate Athletics Director for player development and student-athlete services to work closely on integrating the Red Raiders with the Lubbock community. n Texas Tech wore an “Equality” patch on its jerseys throughout the 2020 season. The Red Raiders also gathered in a straight line just before kickoff in each game to solidify unity and working together to end social injustice. n As part of Texas Tech’s committment to social injustice initiatives, the football program will focus primarily on East Lubbock this year with visits to local elementary schools, Habitat for Humanity and other organizations planned. n Since the start of preseason practices last fall, the Red Raiders have worked voter registration booths, cleaned up a community center, organized an outreach program for local youth and participated in a Habitat for Humanity project in East Lubbock. Texas Tech will continue to volunteer in East Lubbock on Friday mornings of each home football weekend throughout the 2021 season. n Texas Tech’s student-athletes participated in two peace walks last summer, one in East Lubbock and the other on campus in what was referred to as the “Red Raiders United” walk, which was attended by Mayor Dan Pope and Lubbock P.D. Chief Floyd Mitchell. n

HEAD COACH MATT WELLS Matt Wells, a two-time conference Coach of the Year recipient, enters his third season at Texas Tech as he was named the 16th head football coach in school history on Nov. 29, 2018. The 2021 season will be Wells’ ninth season as a collegiate head coach as he has compiled a 52-48 overall record following six seasons at his alma mater, Utah State, and two years leading the Red Raiders. He led the Aggies to five bowl appearances during his tenure, a feat he will look to accomplish frequently as he continues to build the Texas Tech program. TEXAS TECH Through his first two seasons in Lubbock, Wells has set the groundwork for future success at Texas Tech behind a commitment to creating a true developmental program with the Red Raiders. That effort has already paid off as Tech has landed seven All-Big 12 first team selections during that time, its most in a two-year span since the 2004-05 seasons. In only their first season, Wells and his staff helped Jordyn Brooks and Douglas Coleman III produce their best seasons as Red Raiders, ultimately leading to All-Big 12 first team accolades. Both were strong candidates for national awards as well with Coleman a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award and Brooks a finalist for the Butkus Award. They were joined on the All-Big 12 first team by punter Austin McNamara, who led all FBS freshmen after averaging 45.0 yards per punt during the 2019 season. The arrival of Wells and his staff was a welcome sight for Brooks, who thrived in a new defensive scheme that helped him rank among the national leaders in total tackles and tackles for a loss. Brooks was a regular in the backfield as he notched 20.0 tackles for a loss as a senior, the most for a Red Raider since Adell Duckett set the school record in 2003. He averaged 1.8 tackles for a loss per game, which ranked second in the FBS despite Brooks missing significant time in November due to injury. National pundits also noticed Brooks’ efforts as he was tabbed a second team All-American by multiple publications following the season. It marked the first time a Tech linebacker had earned first or second team All-America accolades since College Football Hall of Famer and Ring of Honor member Zach Thomas in 1995. The Seattle Seahawks agreed with many of the awards committees as well, selecting Brooks with the 27th overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft. He became only the eighth Red Raider all-time to go off the board in the first round and just the third defensive player to do so, joining the likes of Ted Watts (1981) and another College Football Hall of Famer and Ring of Honor member in Gabe Rivera (1983). Brooks was one of two Red Raiders to hear his name called during the NFL Draft as Broderick Washington Jr. was picked in the fifth round by the Baltimore Ravens. Fellow senior Terence Steele later added his name to the list of Red Raiders joining NFL organizations as he signed a free agent contract with the Dallas Cowboys where he made 14 starts at right tackle as a rookie in 2020. McNamara was recognized on the All-Big 12 first team again following the 2020 season as he was one of four Red Raiders honored WELLS YEAR-BY-YEAR HEAD COACHING HISTORY Year School Overall Home Away Neutral Conf. A DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAM
Since taking the reigns as Texas Tech’s head coach, Matt Wells has stressed the importance in turning the Red Raiders into a “developmental program.” Over his career, Wells and his staff have done just that with eight former players moving on to the NFL, including a pair of first-round draft picks last year in Jordyn Brooks and Jordan Love. Below is a look at several notable players under Wells who have moved on to the next level.
JORDYN BROOKS | LB Brooks put together his best season of his career under Wells en route to being selected 27th overall by the Seattle Seahawks in 2020 NFL Draft. He became the first Red Raider defensive player to be chosen in the first round since Ring of Honor member Gabe Rivera in 1983.
KYLER FACKRELL | LB Fackrell was one of seven Aggies who earned All-America honors under Wells before being selected in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He enters his fifth NFL season this fall with the New York Giants after playing his first four years with the Green Bay Packers.
JORDAN LOVE | QB Love set numerous school records on his way to establishing himself among the nation’s top quarterback prospects under Wells and David Yost at Utah State in 2018. He was later selected 26th overall by the Green Bay Packers in the 2020 NFL Draft.
NICK VIGIL | LB Vigil, a two-time first team All-Mountain West selection under Wells, heard his name called one pick before Fackrell in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He played his first four NFL season with the Cincinnati Bengals before signing with the LA Chargers this offseason.

by the conference coaches, joining offensive lineman Jack Anderson, wide receiver Erik Ezukanma and defensive back Zech McPhearson. It marked Tech’s most first-team accolades since 2005, highlighting a challenging season that will be forever remembered for the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. UTAH STATE Wells was tabbed the head coach for his alma mater on Dec. 20, 2012, following two seasons as an assistant coach on staff. Utah State experienced its best stretch in history during Wells’ tenure as the Aggies won 44 games and played in five bowl games under his guidance, quite the feat for a program that had only eight postseason trips to its record prior to his promotion. Wells, the fourth-longest tenured coach in program history, departed Utah State as the only coach to lead the Aggies to at least three bowl games as well as multiple bowl victories. In fact, Wells was a player (1993), a coordinator (2012) or the head coach (2013-14) for four of Utah State’s five bowl wins in its history with the lone exception coming at the 2018 Gildan New Mexico Bowl after he had already accepting the job at Texas Tech. Wells closed his tenure in Logan as the second-winningest coach in program history as his 44 victories trailed only the total of E. Lowell Romney, who accumulated 128 wins over a 29-year stretch from 1919-48. Additionally, Wells compiled a 30-18 record in Mountain West play, trailing only Romney in all-time conference wins among Utah State head coaches. The Aggies recorded two of their three 10-win campaigns in school history under Wells as Utah State finished 10-4 in only his second season in 2014 and then 11-2 in 2018, which matched the school record for victories. Utah State was also 9-5 during Wells’ debut season in 2013, which marked the most wins for a first-year head coach in program history. Utah State recorded one of its best seasons in school history in Wells’ final year as the Aggies closed the 2018 campaign ranked 21st in the final Amway Coaches’ poll and 22nd in the Associated Press poll. It marked only the fourth time in school history the Aggies, who climbed as high as No. 13 during the regular season, ended a year among the top-25 schools in the AP poll. The No. 13 ranking was Utah State’s highest at any point in a season since the 1961 campaign. Wells was named the 2018 Mountain West Coach of the Year for the second time during his time in Logan, making him just the fifth Mountain West coach to receive the honor twice in a career, joining the likes of Sonny Lubick, Rocky Long, Urban Meyer and Gary Patterson. He also received the accolade following his debut season in 2013, which was highlighted by an appearance in the inaugural Mountain West Championship game and a victory over No. 24 Northern Illinois in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl. The bowl victory over Northern Illinois was the first of three wins over top-25 foes during Wells’ tenure, one more than the Aggies had won in their previous 116 seasons combined. The Aggies followed with a top-25 win in each of the next two seasons after going on the road to defeat No. 18 BYU in 2014 and then topping No. 21 Boise State at home in 2015. Utah State’s success in all three facets of the game led to six Aggies being selected in the NFL Draft under Wells as defensive backs Maurice Alexander and Nevin Lawson were selected in the fourth round in 2014 followed by linebackers Nick Vigil and Kyler Fackrell in the third round two years later, running back Devante Mays in the seventh round in 2017 and another running back in Darwin Thompson in the sixth round of the 2019 draft. Wells’ draftees on the defensive side of the ball have already flourished at the next level as all four have played in over 100 NFL games over their respective careers entering the 2021 season. Thompson, meanwhile, claimed a Super Bowl title during his rookie season with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019. That list doesn’t include quarterback Jordan Love, who excelled under Wells in 2018 after throwing for 3,567 yards and 32 touchdowns with only six interceptions. He snapped five single-season school record that year, breaking the marks for touchdown passes, passing yards, points responsible for (234) as well as games with 300 passing yards (7) and 400 passing yards (2). Love declared for the NFL Draft following his junior season in 2019, ending his career as the school’s all-time leader with 9,003 yards of total offense. Love, who also ranked second with 8,600 career passing yards and tied for second with 60 touchdown passes, was selected 26th overall by the Green Bay Packers in the 2020 NFL Draft, becoming the first Aggie to hear his name called in the first round since 1970. He was the first Utah State quarterback to be chosen in any round since 1988 and only the second signal caller to be selected in the first round. Wells was only the second Utah State graduate to be appointed the school’s head football coach, joining Chris Pella, who led the Aggies from 1983-85. Prior to accepting the head coaching position, Wells spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the Aggies, serving as quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator in 2011 before being promoted to offensive coordinator a year later. Utah State won 18 games in those two seasons, including a school-record 11 victories in 2012. As offensive coordinator, Wells helped Utah State claim the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) title, its first outright conference championship since 1936 and just its third in school history. That season, Wells directed an Aggie offense that set single-season school records for total points (454), total offense (6,108), completions (285) and total yards per game (469.8), while ranking second in points per game (34.9) and total passing yards (3,445). PERSONAL Wells, a quarterback for the Aggies from 1994-96, was a member of two conference championship teams as a student-athlete, which came as a redshirt freshman in 1993 and as a senior in 1996 when Utah State was a member of the Big West Conference. The Aggies earned a share of the Big West title each of those two seasons, the first of which garnered Utah State an invite to the 1993 Las Vegas Bowl II. Utah State topped Ball State, 42-33, in that game for its first bowl victory in school history. A native of Sallisaw, Oklahoma, Wells earned his bachelor’s degree in business marketing from Utah State in 1996, graduating cum laude. He and his wife, Jen, have two daughters, Jadyn and Ella, and one son, Wyatt. In only their short time at Texas Tech, the Wells family has contributed significantly to the Lubbock community through local non-profit organizations such as Voice for Hope and Women’s Protective Services through his Women’s Football Clinic as well as the South Plains COVID-19 Relief Fund.
