TEXAS TECH SAYS GOODBYE TO TWO SENIORS When Texas Tech’s season came to an end in Lawrence, it closed the storied careers of seniors Miara Cave and Tory Vaughan. The four-year letterwinners from TEXAS TECH San Antonio helped transform the Tech program over their final two years, win14-18; 3-13 Big 12 ning 29 total matches, the school’s most over a two-year period since the 200203 seasons. Cave wrapped the season with 239 kills and 47 total blocks, giving her 860 and 250 for her career which both rank just outside the top-10 in school history. Vaughan, meanwhile, was once again instrumental on the back row with 216 digs, moving her career total to 915 over four seasons. RED RAIDERS RETURN MOST OF ROTATION IN 2013 Despite the loss of his most-experienced players in seniors Miara Cave and Tory Vaughan, Don Flora will likely have his most-experienced team during his tenure in 2013 as the Red Raiders return up to 16 letterwinners off this season’s rosters, including soon-to-be seniors Aubree Piper and Ciara Gibson. Among the group is Emily Ehrle and Breeann David, who combined for 454 of Texas Tech’s total kills, along with libero Rachel Brummitt, who recorded a school-record 510 digs from the back row. The returners will be joined by incoming freshmen Marguerite Grubb and Victoria Hinneburg, who both signed national letters of intent with Texas Tech in Nonmember. FLORA TOTALES 29 WINS IN JUST TWO SEASONS After inheriting a 4-25 team from 2010, Don Flora has made quick work in making Texas Tech more competitive not only in the Big 12 Conference but nationally as well. The Red Raiders have won 29 total matches over Flora’s first two years at the helm, marking the program’s most over a two-year period since the 2002 and 2003 teams combined for 32 victories. In addition, Texas Tech’s RPI ranking has increased each season, rising from 182 at the end of the 2010 season to 115 in 2011 and then 96 to conclude this year.

RED RAIDERS BATTLE TOUGH WITH EVENTUAL NCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONS Even in a pair of 3-0 losses, Texas Tech was able to battle back-and-forth with nationally-ranked Texas which went on to win the 2012 NCAA National Championship after sweeping Oregon in the title game. In the series opener against the Longhorns, the Red Raiders battled back from a first-set loss to lead 23-22 in the second before Texas rallied with three-straight points. The Longhorns mounted another comeback in the third frame as the Red Raiders led for the majority of the frame before Texas tied the set at 18-18 and ended the match on an 8-4 run. Tech also recorded its second-highest hitting percentage in Big 12 play later in the year in Austin as the Red Raiders totaled a .333 average through two sets. Texas claimed the Big 12 title behind a 15-1 conference record. PIPER FINISHES IN TOP 10 FOR SINGLE-SEASON HITTING PERCENTAGE Despite missing most of Big 12 play due to injury, Aubree Piper was able to ink her name in the Tech record book with a .312 hitting percentage that ranks tied for seventh all-time in single-season history. Piper finished with 156 kills off 369 attacks with just 41 errors on the year as she wrapped the year ranked ninth in the Big 12 for hitting percentage. The junior tied Chris Martin’s .312 average from 1991 that was 47 percentage points behind Yolanda Cumbess’ school record percentage of .358 from the 2001 season.

TEXAS TECH VOLLEYBALL BRUMMITT SNAPS SINGLE-SEASON DIGS RECORD In only one season, Rachel Brummitt went from a relatively unknown transfer to a school record holder and one of the top liberos in the Big 12. The sophomore snapped the Texas Tech single-season digs record against TCU on Nov. 7, passing Melissa McGehee’s previous school-record total of 448 from the 2000 season. Brummitt, who played her freshman season at Radford University, finished with 510 digs on the year to shatter the record. The Plano, Texas native is only the eighth player in school history to record at least 400 digs in a season. She previously passed teammate Tory Vaughan’s 407 digs from a year ago, which marked the first time Texas Tech had two different players reach the 400-dig mark in consecutive seasons. Texas Tech Single-Season Digs Leaders Total Player Year 510 Rachel Brummitt.........................2012 448 Melissa McGehee...........................2000 RED RAIDERS NOTCH FIRST MARQUEE WIN IN THE FLORA ERA Head coach Don Flora earned his first victory over a ranked opponent on Nov. 17 when the Red Raiders topped No. 20 Kansas State, 3-1, at the United Spirit Arena. The victory ended an eight-year drought against top-25 teams as Texas Tech’s last win over a ranked opponent came on Nov. 20, 2004, when the Red Raiders also topped 20th-ranked K-State in Manhattan. It was also the first victory over a ranked opponent in Lubbock since Tech defeated No. 21 Missouri on Oct. 5, 2002. The Red Raiders came close to topping No. 25 Oklahoma in Flora’s inaugural season before the Sooners rallied for the five-set victory. TEXAS TECH SIGNS TWO DURING FALL PERIOD Don Flora added to Texas Tech’s future in early November when the second-year head coach announced the signing of high school prospects Marguerite Grubb and Victoria Hinneburg to national letters of intent to join the program for the 2013 season. Grubb, one of the top setters in the state of Texas, was a four-year starter at Bellaire High School near Houston where she earned first team all-district honors each season. Hinneburg, meanwhile, will make the journey to Lubbock after competing for several of the top volleyball clubs in her native Germany. The 6-4 middle blocker was part of three national youth championship teams and will bring immediate depth to Tech’s attack. RED RAIDERS BOAST BALANCED ATTACK If one thing was true about the Red Raiders in 2012, Texas Tech sported one of the more-balanced attacks in recent memory as six players finished with 100 or more kills on the season. Emily Ehrle led the Tech with 241 kills followed by Miara Cave with 239 and Breeann David with 213. Meghan Stacy, Lydia McKay and Aubree Piper rounded out the group with 199, 178, and 156 kills each, respectively. Tech had not previously have six or more players reach 100 kills in a season since 2001 when seven players did so en route to the school’s most recent NCAA Tournament appearance. STEPPING UP THE MIDDLE Prior to this season, one of the main aspects Don Flora wanted to improve in the Texas Tech attack was its play in the middle. The Red Raiders attacked primarily from the outside during his inaugural campaign on the Tech bench but looked more to the middle this season with returning junior Aubree Piper and emerging freshman Lydia McKay. The two middles concluded the season with Tech’s two highest hitting percentages as McKay has totaled a .274 average while Piper hit .312 on they year, which ranked ninth overall in the Big 12. The two, along with fellow middle blockers Mikia Mills and Brianna Grant, combined for 444 kills so far this season, 31 percent of Tech’s team total which is vast improvement from a year ago where Tech received only 20 percent of its kills from the middle. Tech had not previously had two or more middle blockers post 100 or more kills in a season since Piper and Barbara Conceicao combined for 255 in 2010. RED RAIDERS RECEIVE MORE ATTENTION UNDER FLORA Don Flora’s hiring at Texas Tech has not only resulted in more wins for the Red Raiders but it has also brought more recognition to the program as well. In the 15 seasons prior to his arrival, Texas Tech had only been honored with a Big 12 weekly recipient 12 times with the most recent being Amanda Dowdy in 2008. That all changed in 2011, though, as the Red Raiders picked up three conference weekly awards en route to a 15-17 season that marked the most wins since 2001. Tech picked up right where last season left off as well as the Red Raiders finished 14-18 and received five weekly accolades from the league, giving Flora seven in a little over a season.

OPENING SET KEY FOR THE RED RAIDERS If one thing was evident for the Red Raiders this season, winning the opening set was crucial. Texas Tech finished 10-3 this season when winning the opening frame, improving its two-year record under Don Flora to 24-6 in the process. Overcoming deficits has been a challenge, especially in Big 12 play, as the Red Raiders have rallied to win from a first-set loss five times under Flora, with four of those matches taking place this season. Tech also went 9-0 this year when taking a 2-1 lead into the fourth set. DAVID RECORDS CAREER NIGHT AGAINST TCU Breeann David recorded her best performance of her young career Nov. 7 when the sophomore connected on 19 kills in a straight-set loss to TCU. She also added nine digs to finish just shy of her fourth career doubledouble. Her 19 kills snapped her previous career high of 17 that she set on Oct. 1 last year in a five-set loss to Oklahoma. The performance marked the fifth time this season a Tech player has recorded 19 or more kills in a match. TEXAS TECH SWEEPS SEASON SERIES WITH WEST VIRGINIA Texas Tech completed the season sweep of West Virginia on Oct. 27 with a 3-1 victory at the United Spirit Arena. The Red Raiders, who also topped the Mountaineers in four sets on Oct. 13, had not previously swept the season series with a Big 12 opponent since defeating both Kansas and Texas A&M twice in 2006. The victory also marked the first time Texas Tech had defeated a Big 12 opponent in four or less sets at home since topping Kansas, 3-1, on Sept. 26, 2006. STACY BECOMES LATEST RED RAIDER TO EARN BIG 12 WEEKLY HONORS After dropping 19 kills against West Virginia, Meghan Stacy became the fourth Red Raider this year to earn a Big 12 weekly award as she was named the conference Rookie of the Week on Oct. 29. The freshman totaled 19 kills for the second-straight match as she originally set her career high on Oct. 20 at No. 14 Kansas State. The Ozark, Mo. native finished with just five attacking errors off 40 swings against the Mountaineers en route to recording a .350 hitting percentage, her highest in Big 12 play this season. She is the third Red Raider to earn Rookie of the Week honors this season, joining Emily Ehrle (Sept. 10) and Emily Ruetter (Sept. 4). The selection marks Tech’s fifth weekly award this year, the most in a program history, as Rachel Brummitt also garnered Defensive Player of the Week accolades twice already. BRIEFLY … • The Big 12 Conference had four teams ranked in the top 25 or receiving votes in the final AVCA poll. No. 3 Texas leads the group that also includes No. 14 Iowa State and No. 25 Kansas. Kansas State received 19 points to finish No. 29 in the poll. • The Red Raiders were ranked No. 96 in the final ratings percentage index (RPI) poll that was released following the NCAA Championship selections. • Texas Tech boasted one of the youngest rosters in the Big 12 as 15 of 19 Red Raiders who appeared in a conference match this season are classified as either a freshman or sophomore. • Don Flora will enter the 2013 season needing just two victories to reach 300 for his career. The California native is 298-94 over 13 seasons as a collegiate head coach and 29-35 while at Texas Tech. • Ellen Sorrells broke her career high in digs for the second-straight match on Oct. 27 against West Virginia as she totaled 11, one more than her previous high that was set on Oct. 20 at No. 14 Kansas State. Sorrells also totaled three aces against the Wildcats, marking the fourth time this year where a Red Raider has recorded three aces in a match. • Like Sorrells, Whitney Ford and Brianna Grant also came off the bench and delivered against Kansas State as Ford totaled a season-high three kills and two blocks while Grant notched season highs with five kills and four blocks. • Rachel Brummitt finished the season ranked fourth in the Big 12 for digs per set as the sophomore transfer averaged 4.32 per frame. The two-time Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week also recorded the second-highest dig total in the Big 12 this season after finishing with 34 against Houston Baptist in the Rice Invitational opener. • Tory Vaughan wrapped the season among the leaders in digs among active Big 12 players as the senior has totaled 915 over her four seasons which ranks seventh in the conference. • Emily Ruetter’s 71 assists against Houston Baptist during the Rice Invitational ranks as the most for a Big 12 player this season as Erin Mcnorton (Kansas) and Hannah Allison (Texas) are the only other setters to register 60 or more assists in a match. • Ruetter finished the season ranked seventh in the Big 12 with a 9.48 assists per set average. She spent the majority of the season as the conference leader among freshmen in the category before Oklahoma’s Julia Doyle finished with a 9.52 assists per set average. West Virginia’s Brittany Sample also recorded 8.80 assists per frame. EHRLE BECOMES FIRST RED RAIDER TO REACH 200-KILL MARK With her six kills at West Virginia, Emily Ehrle became the first Red Raider to reach the 200-kill mark this year as she has totaled 241 on the year. The Crowley, Texas native is the sixth Red Raider since 2000 to record at least 200 kills as a freshman, joining Kelly Johnson (2001), Kiley Lyons (2003), Amy Gandy (2004), Amanda Dowdy (2008), and Breeann David (2011). Fellow freshmen Meghan Stacy and Lydia McKay came close to joining Ehrle as they recorded 199 and 178 kills, respectively. HRAGYIL, STACY COME OFF THE BENCH TO SPARK RED RAIDERS IN WIN Part of Texas Tech’s success at West Virginia stemmed from the play of its bench, specifically Nicole Hragyil and Meghan Stacy. Hragyil moved from a back row substitute to setter to start the second set while Stacy was inserted on the outside as an offensive boost. Both delivered as Hragyil recorded her first career double@TECHATHLETICS
TEXAS TECH VOLLEYBALL double with 30 assists and 10 digs while Stacy connected on 10 kills to go along with a .296 hitting percentage. Stacy’s 10 kills marked her most during Big 12 play this year as she reached double digits for the first time since dropping a season-high 16 on Sept. 14 against Houston Baptist. Hragyil, meanwhile, posted season highs in both categories as she reached double digits in digs for the third time in her career. Both players were in the starting lineup Wednesday evening when Tech fell in straight sets to Oklahoma. DAVID SEES FIRST FULL ACTION BACK AGAINST KANSAS Despite having played briefly in two matches since returning from injury, Breeann David made her full return to the court against Texas as the sophomore connected on 10 kills over three sets. David was Texas Tech’s leader in kills prior to suffering an ankle injury early in the first set against Towson on Sept. 7. Since then, she has played just a few points in Tech’s first two Big 12 matches against Kansas and TCU. The Denver City, Texas native has primarily played three rotations since returning from injury. EHRLE BECOMES LATEST RED RAIDER TO EARN A BIG 12 WEEKLY AWARD Emily Ehrle joined Rachel Brummitt and Emily Ruetter as Big 12 weekly award recipients on Sept. 10 as she was named the conference Rookie of the Week for her play at the Montana Tournament. The freshman totaled 46 kills over four matches, including double digit totals over the final two contests against Furman and Montana. She hit .293 over 14 sets, including a .432 mark against Furman where she connected on a careerhigh 23 kills. The performance marked the first time a Tech player had reached the 20-kill mark this season and was also the most kills since Amanda Dowdy recorded 26 on Sept. 26 last year at New Mexico. The selection marked the third-straight week a Red Raider had earned a conference award, a first in school history. TOWSON SNAPS TEXAS TECH’S SEASON-OPENING WINNING STREAK Texas Tech’s loss to Towson to start the Montana tournament snapped an eight-match winning streak to start the season for the Red Raiders, who were off to their best start since 2003. The Red Raiders had started a season with eight-straight victories only seven times previously in school history. Tech also opened the 2011 season with a solid start as the Red Raiders were 13-1 with the only loss coming in the season opener at TCU. BRUMMITT REPEATS AT BIG 12 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Rachel Brummitt became the first Tech player to earn a Big 12 weekly in consecutive weeks on Sept. 4 when the sophomore was named the conference Defensive Player of the Week. Brummitt, who took the award after the opening weekend of the season as well, snapped the Tech school record for most digs in a three-set match against San Jose State as she finished with 27, topping the previous record of 24 that was set by Sheila Solomon on Nov. 16, 1990, against Houston. The Plano, Texas native was named to last weekend’s Lonestar Showdown all-tournament team as she finished with a team-high 60 digs to go along with four aces. RUETTER ALSO HONORED AS CONFERENCE ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Just like Rachel Brummitt, freshman Emily Ruetter was also honored by the Big 12 on Sept. 4 as she was named the conference Rookie of the Week. Since taking over the setter role at the beginning of the season, Ruetter has led a balanced Tech attack as she is sixth in the Big 12 with a 9.60 assists per set average that also ranks second in the league among freshman setters. She finished with 111 assists to go along with 21 digs and seven blocks during the Lonestar Showdown en route to becoming the first Tech setter to earn a conference weekly award since Lisa Hilgers on Nov. 16, 1998. RED RAIDERS WIN LONESTAR SHOWDOWN CROWN Texas Tech’s success in tournament formats continued this past weekend as the Red Raiders defended their home floor to win the Lonestar Showdown title after sweeping both Texas-Pan American and San Jose State before holding off Northwestern State with a 3-1 victory in the finale. The Red Raiders are 38-9 during the Big 12 in home tournaments and 6-0 under head coach Don Flora, who has led Tech to its five tournament titles already in his two-year tenure. Tech is 21-4 when playing in a tournament setting under Flora. DAVID SHINES IN FRONT OF HOME CROWD Breeann David led the Red Raiders with 31 kills and 18 blocks en route to earning MVP honors of the Lonestar Showdown. The sophomore also totaled a pair of aces and 29 digs as she posted her first doubledouble of the season and second of her career with 14 kills and 12 digs in the finale against Northwestern State. David also recorded a career-high seven blocks against the Lady Demons and hit a season-high .375 as well. She followed up the performance with another double-double Monday against North Texas where the Denver City native recorded 16 kills and 16 digs to help the Red Raiders overcome an early deficit and take a 3-1 victory. BRUMMITT EARNS BIG 12 DEFENSIVE POW AFTER IMPRESSIVE DEBUT Rachel Brummitt was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week on Aug. 27 after earning MVP honors at the Boston College Invitational. The sophomore totaled 68 digs and eight aces from the libero position, which was the most among Big 12 players that weekend in both categories. The Plano, Texas native was the first Tech player to receive a conference weekly award since Tory Vaughan was also honored as the defensive player of the week on Oct. 31 last year. PIPER, RUETTER NAMED TO B.C. INVITATIONAL ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Aubree Piper and Emily Ruetter were both named to the Boston College Invitational all-tournament team after helping lead the Red Raiders to their first 4-0 start to a season since 2003. Piper was a dominating presence for the Red Raiders in the middle, finishing with 30 kills along with a team-high .397 hitting percentage to go along with 18 blocks. Ruetter, meanwhile, was Tech’s primary setter throughout the weekend, totaling 141 assists (8.81 per set) and two double-doubles after recording 32 digs.

Don Flora Head Coach 2nd Season University of La Verne ‘90, ‘00 Career Record: 298-94 (13) At Tech: 29-35 (2) @CoachFloraTTU
I
n only one season as the head volleyball coach at Texas Tech, Don Flora has already revitalized a once storied program.
Flora was named the eighth volleyball coach in school history on Jan. 7, 2011, and immediately hit the ground running, leading the Red Raiders to a 15-17 record, the program’s most victories since 2001. It also marked the third-largest win differential in the country (+11) from the 2010 to 2011 season after inheriting a program that was just 4-25 the year before. Not bad for a first-year head coach who inherited a program that had only won 11 matches over its previous three seasons combined. Flora led the Red Raiders to that total in only his second month. Flora is 298-93 in 12-plus total seasons as a collegiate head coach as he remains one of the winningest active coaches with 10 years of experience at any level of NCAA play. In his 12 seasons as a head coach, Flora’s only other losing season came during his inaugural campaign at the University of La Verne (Calif.) when the Leopards similarly finished just two matches below .500 with a 12-14 mark. Flora led La Verne to 20 or more wins in nine of his next 10 seasons. The California native will look to do the same at Texas Tech as he enters the 2012 season, his second on the South Plains, with a young roster composed of 10 newcomers coming mainly from his first true recruiting class that spanned the Western Hemisphere as well as the state of Texas. Flora and his staff traveled to Canada to sign setter Emily Ruetter and then reached the Midwest with the addition of Brianna Grant out of Illinois and Meghan Stacy from Missouri. He also stayed close to home with the signing of Emily Ehrle from Crowley, Texas, who was the first of five other true freshmen to join the program. Red Raider fans took notice in only his first year as Tech averaged more than 800 fans in 2011, around a 15 percent increase from the year before. Tech broke the 1,000 fan mark three times, including a season high 1,413 on Nov. 9 against No. 8 Texas that was the largest announced attendance since 1,468 fans saw the Red Raiders face top-ranked Nebraska. Flora came to Tech following a two-year stint as an assistant coach at New Mexico State where the Aggies, consistently one of the top programs nationally, compiled a 38-22 record. Flora was responsible for recruiting activities, practice instruction and game strategy and was involved in the daily development of the overall program under head coach Mike Jordan. La Verne posted at least 20 wins in nine-straight seasons beginning in 2000 as the Leopards claimed ninestraight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) titles. During Flora’s tenure, the Leopards were 140-10 in SCIAC matches, boasting an impressive .933 winning percentage helped in part by five undefeated 14-0 campaigns in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, and 2008. As the success kept building early in Flora’s tenure, so did the achievements at the national level. In only Flora’s fourth season, the Leopards wrapped a near-perfect 27-1 season with the 2001 NCAA Division III National Title, the second in school history. The title run earned Flora the Division III National Coach of the Year honor by both the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and Volleyball Magazine. He was also named the AVCA West Region Coach of the Year, an award he was presented three more times following the 2003, 2005, and 2008 seasons. With a national title under his belt, Flora’s success kept rolling as the Leopards eventually posted their first 30-win season in 2003, which began a streak of three-straight seasons where La Verne advanced to the NCAA Final Four. The Leopards posted a school-record 33 wins a season later. The Leopards posted 27 wins in each of Flora’s final three seasons at the school, which culminated in another national title match appearance in 2008. Unlike 2001, however, La Verne was topped in the championship, falling to Emory in four sets. Flora graduated with a degree in social sciences from La Verne in 1990 before later returning to the classroom to earn his masters in the Leadership and Management curriculum in 2000. Flora, a native of Covina, Calif., and his wife, Jeanne, currently reside in Lubbock with their two daughters, Annika and Alexis. @TECHATHLETICS
