OUR MISSION To Educate, Serve & Grow Fearless Champions
Dear Friend of Texas Tech, What a great time to be a Red Raider! We believe 2013-14 to be a cornerstone year for our athletics program as we strive to become the best in the country. There were numerous on field successes, including a Big 12 Championship in men’s track and field and of course our first-ever trip to the College World Series. Just as important, our student-athletes continued to excel in the classroom and made an impressionable impact in our community through countless hours of volunteerism. Our mission is to Educate, Serve and Grow Fearless Champions, and over the last year, I believe we made significant strides in our effort to provide the total student-athlete experience. However, we must continue to adapt to the changing collegiate landscape and find ways to position our studentathletes for success, both now and in the future. Although there are many unanswered questions as to how our future will be framed at the national level, I am proud of the ways we have responded to recent changes and the leadership we have demonstrated. Our success on the field and in the classroom is attributed to the financial support you provide through your membership in the Red Raider Club. Your contributions and attendance at our events are the lifeblood of this program. Without your support, we would be unable to provide the student-athlete experience necessary in order to compete in the Big 12 Conference or at the national level. We are off to a tremendous start in 2014-15 and that only illustrates the great future we have in front of us. My promise to you is that we will continue to work hard, recruit talented student-athletes and represent Texas Tech University in a way that will bring a sense of great pride to the best fan base in the country. On behalf of our 400 student-athletes, coaches and staff, thank you for your tremendous support of Texas Tech Athletics. I look forward to seeing you at our games/matches this season and cheering on our Fearless Champions. Guns Up! Kirby Hocutt Director of Athletics
Athletic Success
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Red Raiders completed their first season under head coach Tubby Smith with a 14-18 overall record that was boosted by top-25 victories over both No. 12 Baylor and No. 19 Oklahoma State at United Supermarkets Arena. Tech also came close to an upset victory over No. 8 Kansas late in the year before the Jayhawks escaped Lubbock with a 64-63 victory in front of a capacity crowd.
BASEBALL
Texas Tech capped a historic season on the diamond with the program’s first-ever trip to the College World Series in Omaha. The Red Raiders (45-21) defeated top-seeded Miami at the Coral Gables Regional before topping College of Charleston twice in front of a capacity crowd at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park on their way to Omaha. Tech’s 45 wins marked the fourth most in school history as the Red Raiders ended the year ranked in the top 10 in every national poll. The successful postseason run earned secondyear coach Tim Tadlock the Skip Bertman National Coach of the Year award by the College Baseball Hall of Fame.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
A new era in Lady Raider basketball began in 2013 as Candi Whitaker took over the women’s program, becoming the sixth head coach in school history. The Lady Raiders, one of the youngest teams in the country this past season, ended the year 6-24 overall.
FOOTBALL
Led by former record-setting quarterback and new head coach Kliff Kingsbury, the Red Raiders put together an 8-5 season in 2013 that was highlighted by their 37-23 victory over No. 16 Arizona State at the Holiday Bowl. With the victory, Kingsbury became just the third Red Raider head coach to win a bowl game in his first season. True freshman Davis Webb threw for 403 yards and tied a Tech bowl record with four touchdowns en route to earning Offensive MVP honors. Webb directed a Red Raider offense for most of the season that averaged 392.8 yards per game through the air, secondmost in the country in 2013.
MEN’S GOLF
The Red Raiders extended their postseason streak to 13-straight seasons this past spring after advancing to the NCAA Raleigh Regional. The postseason streak is the longest currently on campus and the second-longest in school history. Tech came close to advancing to the NCAA Championships after finishing the Raleigh Regional at 12-over, 864 and in sixth place overall.
CROSS COUNTRY
The Texas Tech men’s team finished fifth while the women came in seventh this past season at the Big 12 Championships. The cross country season was highlighted by senior runner Kennedy Kithuka, who became the first repeat Big 12 individual champion since 2005. Kithuka went on to finish second at the NCAA Championship, marking the only cross country loss in his career at Tech.
Athletic Success
MEN’S TENNIS
The Red Raiders returned to the NCAA Championships in 2014 for the eighth time in the past 10 years under head coach Tim Siegel. It was the 13th overall postseason appearance for Tech, all of which have come under Siegel. No. 17 California ended Tech’s season with a 4-0 victory in College Station, ending the Red Raiders season with a 13-11 overall record.
WOMEN’S GOLF
Texas Tech fell just shy of advancing to an NCAA Regional for the fifth-straight season under head coach JoJo Robertson. Despite failing to make the postseason as a team, Kimmy Hill represented the Lady Raiders at the NCAA Central Regional as she was one of 18 individual players selected among three regional sites.
SOFTBALL
WOMEN’S TENNIS
The Lady Raiders advanced to the postseason for the third-straight season under head coach Todd Petty. Tech ended the season 13-9 overall after being upset in the first round of the NCAA Championships by Ole Miss. Petty was led by the winningest senior class in school history which featured Samantha Adams, Nikki Sanders and Rashmi Teltumbde, who combined for 74 total victories in their four seasons.
TRACK & FIELD
The Texas Tech men’s track and field team captured its second Big 12 Outdoor title in program history this spring and did so in front of its home crowd at the Terry and Linda Fuller Track and Field Complex. The Red Raiders scored a program-best 160.5 points en route to becoming the first Big 12 program to win a conference title at home since 2008. The Lady Raiders, meanwhile, completed the meet in third place, their highest finish since 2009. Tech sent eight athletes as well as its women’s 4x400 relay to the NCAA Championships held in Eugene, Oregon.
VOLLEYBALL
The Red Raiders ended the 2013 season 1022 overall under third-year head coach Don Flora. Rising seniors Breeann David and Rachel Brummitt were both selected to the U.S. Collegiate National Teams following the season after an open tryout at the U.S. Olympic Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
SOCCER
The Red Raiders recorded their fifth straight 30win season in 2014 before just missing out on a trip to an NCAA Regional. Following the season, Adrian Gregory was named the seventh head coach in program history.
The Texas Tech soccer program turned in its best season in school history as the Red Raiders finished 18-2-3 overall and advanced to the NCAA second round for the second-consecutive season. The Red Raiders came close to their first Big 12 regular season title with a 6-0-2 record that was good enough for second place in the league, Tech’s highest conference finish in program history.
