RED RAIDERS AIM FOR FIRST CONFERENCE WIN AT BAYLOR Texas Tech will look for its first Big 12 win of the season Wednesday night when the Red Raiders travel to Waco to face the Baylor Bears at 7 p.m. in the Ferrell Center. FLORA MAKING QUICK CHANGES TO TEXAS TECH Prior to his arrival, Texas Tech had only 11 wins over its last three seasons. Don Flora surpassed that total in mid-September. Now, the first-year head coach is aiming to put Tech in the midst of the Big 12 race as the Red Raiders have only won three conference matches during the past three years. After opening the conference schedule with back-to-back matches against ranked opponents, the Red Raiders play four of their next six matches on the road with home matches against Kansas State and Texas A&M. TEXAS TECH OFF TO BEST START SINCE 2000 The Red Raiders enter Monday’s match boasting a 14-3 record, marking the program’s best start since the 2000 squad opened the year 16-1 en route to a 24-9 record and trip to the NCAA Tournament. Tech began that season with eight-straight wins before falling to Baylor on Sept. 13 and then followed with seven more wins to start its tournament run. Following its win over New Mexico Monday night, the Red Raiders enter the match having won 14 of its last 15 matches after dropping the season opener to TCU. THE SERIES Wednesday’s match will be the 50th all-time between the two schools as the Red Raiders hold a 48-21 alltime advantage in the series. Baylor has won the last 12 matches in the series that dates back to 1976. The Red Raiders have not defeated the Bears since Oct. 27, 2004, in a five-set match in Lubbock. LOOKING AHEAD The Red Raiders return to the United Spirit Arena this weekend to face Kansas State prior to heading on the road for two matches next week. Tech and the Wildcats will get started at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Red Raiders will travel to Texas and Missouri next week as Tech’s next home match is not until Oct. 19 against Texas A&M. RED RAIDERS NEARLY UPSET 25TH-RANKED OKLAHOMA Texas Tech gave 25th-ranked Oklahoma all it could take last Saturday as the Red Raiders were a few points shy of scoring its first victory over a ranked opponent since the 2004 season. Playing their second five-set match of the week, the Red Raiders took a 11-8 set midway through the final frame before OU rallied to tie the set once again. Tech forced two match points that the Sooners survived en route to eventually winning three-straight points as part of a 17-15 victory.

UNITED SPIRIT ARENA The United Spirit Arena, one of the finest multi-purpose venues in the country, is home to the Texas Tech basketball and volleyball programs. Constructed in 1999, the USA is named in honor of United Supermarkets, who was the project’s major donor. Since its creation, the 15,000 seat arena has hosted some of the top entertainment acts in the country, including George Strait, Brad Paisley, ZZ Top, and numerous others. DIRECTIONS TO THE UNITED SPIRIT ARENA The United Spirit Arena is located on the west part of the Texas Tech campus on Indiana Avenue. The facility is just off the Marsha Sharp Freeway and can also be accessed by the Texas Tech Parkway. FROM THE AIRPORT: Take I-27 South from Regis Street and exit west on the Marsha Sharp Freeway. Take the Texas Tech Parkway exit and turn south (left) for a quarter of a mile until you reach the first stop light (Indiana Ave.). MATCH NOTES DOWDY NOT JUST AN OFFENSIVE PLAYER If Amanda Dowdy has proved one thing this season, it would be that her impact isn’t only felt on the attack. The senior is Tech’s leader in both kills and digs and ranks among the Big 12’s top performers in both categories. Dowdy has posted a double-double in 14 of Tech’s 17 matches thus far, giving her 28 over her career. DOWDY CREEPING UP RECORD BOOK Amanda Dowdy made another step up the Tech record book against Iowa State as the senior moved to second all-time in career attempts, passing Melissa McGehee (1999-02). Dowdy now has 3,522 swings during her four seasons and trails McGehee by only 64 kills for second all-time in that category as well. Kelly Johnson is the school’s all-time leader in both categories as she totaled 1,925 career kills and 5,142 attempts during 2001-04 seasons. VAUGHAN SNAPS CAREER HIGH Tory Vaughan snapped her career high in digs for the second time this season against Oklahoma, totaling 26 over five sets. Her previous high had been the 21 digs she notched against Morehead State in the finale of the Texas Tech Invitational. It marked the third time Vaughan had broken the 20-dig barrier this season. DAVID BOOSTING OFFENSE OVER LAST WEEK Breeann David has dropped double-digit kills figures in each of Tech’s last two matches, including a career-high 17 against Oklahoma last Saturday. The freshman had not been in double-digits for two-straight matches since the opening the season against TCU and UConn. David also recorded her first career double-double against New Mexico, nailing 15 kills to go with her 12 digs. MEYERS MOVING UP RECORD BOOK TOO Karlyn Meyers moved into sole possession of seventh on the school’s career assists chart midway through the opening set against Oklahoma. Only the eighth player in school history to reach 2,000 assists in a career, Meyers passed Mary Loescher (1985-87) as she now has 2,361 assists over her four seasons. RED RAIDERS SCORE COME-FROM-BEHIND WIN Tech’s come-from-behind win over New Mexico last week marked the second time this season the Red Raiders had overcome a deficit on the road. After winning the first set, Tech dropped the next two games before rallying to win the final two in the Red Raiders’ first five-set match of the year. Tech had previously overcome an early one-set deficit to defeat North Texas on Sept. 19 in Denton.
NOTABLES u The Oklahoma match marked the first time Texas Tech had taken a ranked opponent to five sets since falling to the Sooners in five on Oct. 11, 2006 in Lubbock. u Prior to last week, the Red Raiders had not taken two-straight matches to five sets since facing TCU and Oklahoma as part of the Red Raider Round Up on Sept. 12, 2008. u Texas Tech's 14 wins this year marks the school's most in a single-season since going 14-15 during the 2002 season. u The Red Raiders' win over New Mexico was Tech's 14th-straight over a non-conference opponent, the school's longest such run since winning 22-straight over the course of the 1996-97 seasons. u Tech is 11-1 in games away from Lubbock this season. The Red Raiders had not won at least 11 away or neutral site since 2000 when Tech finished with 12 wins away from Lubbock. u Tech trailed in kills and hitting percentage for the first time all season against Iowa State as the Red Raiders notched only 28 kills and a .049 hitting percentage, both season lows. u Tech had not previously been swept in any match this season prior to facing Iowa State. The last time the Red Raiders suffered a 3-0 loss was against Nebraska on Nov. 6, 2010. u The Red Raiders have held their opponents to a combined .096 hitting percentage so far this season, which is the lowest in the Big 12. Oklahoma currently ranks second as its opponents are hitting .157 followed by Iowa State and Texas A&M at .165. u The North Texas match snapped a seven-match streak where the Red Raiders had claimed a 3-0 sweep. The run was Tech’s longest since opening the 1998 season with eight-straight sweeps. u Texas Tech’s win over UT-Arlington marked the program’s third tournament title of the season, a feat that had not been previously accomplished since the 2000 season. u Tech has already surpassed its win total from the 2008-10 seasons combined as the Red Raiders won 11 games during those three years. u The Red Raiders have broken the 10-win barrier for the first time since the 2006 season when Tech finished 12-17 under Nancy Todd. u Tech has held its opponent to a hitting percentage below .100 in seven of its last 11 matches. Only UConn, Iowa State, and Oklahoma have posted an average over .200 against the Red Raiders this year. u Tech has also held four of its opponents to a negative hitting percentage, which prior to the year had not been accomplished since facing Northwestern State on Sept. 2, 2010. u The Red Raiders, meanwhile, have hit over .200 in all but four matches this season. Tech has been over .300 in five matches as well.

MATCH NOTES TEXAS TECH RECORD WHEN...
RECORD WATCH: DOWDY CHASING SEVERAL MILESTONES IN 2011 Senior Amanda Dowdy will not only be looking to end her Texas Tech career off on a high note this year, but she will also be chasing several program records. The Lexington, Texas native entered the year fifth alltime in career kills and sixth in career attacks. Dowdy is only the eighth player in school history to reach 1,000 kills over a career as she has recorded 1,041 over three seasons. Dowdy also joined the top 10 last year on the single-season charts as her 424 kills ranked 10th alltime and her 1,286 attempts was sixth all-time. She also set the single-match record for kills a year ago as she finished with 37 against Colorado on Oct. 13 before nearing the feat again against the Buffaloes, NEW MEXICO WIN BOOSTS TECH’S RKPI Tech’s win over New Mexico Monday night moved the Red Raiders up 13 spots in the Richard Kern Percentage Index (RKPI), which is similar to the RPI used by the NCAA. The Red Raiders came into the match ranked 108 out of 327 schools. The win was Tech’s second over a top 100 opponent this year as Morehead State came into the week ranked 83rd overall, 10 spots behind New Mexico. RANGEL STEPS UP AT NEW MEXICO Dravon Rangel not only moved back into the starting lineup at New Mexico, but she also played a huge part in Tech’s 3-2 victory. The sophomore, who was starting in place of Aubree Piper, delivered a school-record 14 block assists in the match, breaking the previous single-match record of 11 that was last set by current director of operations Amy Gandy on Nov. 15, 2006 against Iowa State. RED RAIDERS BREAK BLOCKING MILESTONE Tech snapped a 19-year-old school record at New Mexico with 37 block assists against the Lobos, surpassing the previous milestone of 36 that was set against Utah State on Sept. 10, 1982. The Red Raiders finished with a season-high 19.5 blocks in the match as opposed to New Mexico’s six total. IOWA STATE SNAPS TECH’S WINNING STREAK Iowa State snapped the Red Raiders’ 13-match winning streak with a 3-0 victory in Tech’s Big 12 opener. The loss ended Tech’s longest run since the 1996 season where the Red Raiders got off to a 15-0 start. Tech, which had not lost a match since the season opener at TCU, dropped its fourthstraight Big 12 opener, falling to 6-10 in conference openers. RED RAIDERS OPEN CONFERENCE ATOP THE BIG 12 STANDINGS After a successful start to the season, Tech began Big 12 action atop the conference standings for the first time since 1997 with a 13-1 record. The Red Raiders, who were also 13-1 at that point, finished the 1997 season 23-11 overall, barely missing out on the NCAA Tournament. FLORA JOINS ELITE COMPANY IN RECORD BOOK When then athletics director Gerald Meyers hired Don Flora last January, he knew he was getting 4

Flora has proved Meyers’ pick to be a solid choice as Tech is 13-1 on the year, the best record through 14 matches for a first-year head coach in school history. The California native passed Donna Martin, who led Tech to a 12-2 start in 1985 as the Red Raiders eventually ended the year 19-9 overall. Flora entered the year as one of the winningest coaches all-time in NCAA history after compiling a 269-59 record over 11 seasons at the University of La Verne in California. SENIORS ENJOYING FINAL SEASON AT TECH Seniors Amanda Dowdy and Karlyn Meyers have to be enjoying their final season in a Texas Tech uniform. The duo won a combined 11 games over their first three seasons, one less than Tech’s total so far this year. Don Flora marked the fourth head coach to lead the duo as the co-captains started their careers under Nancy Todd in 2008. Now, Dowdy and Meyers are off to one of the best seasons in school history while both are also climbing the Tech record book in several categories. ROAD TRIP MEANS NOTHING TO TECH Possibly the most important factor in Tech’s transformation under Don Flora has been its ability to score wins on the road. The Red Raiders had traditionally struggled away from Lubbock in recent years but have posted a 10-1 record in road or neutral site contests so far. That’s impressive for a program that entered the year with only 14 wins away from Lubbock since 2007. TEXAS TECH BOOSTS OFFENSE WITH SERVE One of Don Flora’s areas of improvement early in the season was Tech’s serving ability after the Red Raiders posted double-digit error numbers twice in their first three matches. Tech has used the serve to its advantage lately as the Red Raiders have totaled 86 aces so far, nearly 20 more than the 2010 season. Nicole Hragyil and Amanda Dowdy lead the squad with 13 aces, while Tory Vaughan has added 12 of her own as well. Hragyil currently ranks ninth in the Big 12, averaging 0.31 aces per set. TEXAS TECH INVITATIONAL MARKS A FIRST The Red Raiders’ tournament win last weekend at the Texas Tech Invitational was the program’s first since it claimed the North Texas Tournament to start the 2008 season. Tech had also not won its own

DAVID ADDS TO WEEKLY AWARD WINNERS Breeann David became the second Texas Tech player to earn a Big 12 weekly award this week as she was named the conference Rookie of the Week on Monday. David joins teammate Aubree Piper as a weekly award winner after Piper earned Defensive Player of the Week honors a week ago. It marked the first time in school history that two different players had been honored in the same season. PIPER HONORED ON BIG 12 WEEKLY AWARDS Prior to Tuesday night’s match at Texas-Pan American, sophomore Aubree Piper was named the Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her performance during the Texas Tech Invitational. Piper finished with 21 blocks to go along with 15 kills on the weekend, matching her single-game highs for total blocks and block assists in the process. No Tech player had been previously honored with a Big 12 weekly award since Amanda Dowdy was named the conference Rookie of the Week on Sept. 15, 2008. DOWDY LEADS TRIO OF PLAYERS ON ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Amanda Dowdy was one of three Red Raiders named to the Texas Tech Invitational all-tournament team as the senior picked up most valuable player honors. Fellow senior Karlyn Meyers and junior Miara Cave were also honored as the Red Raiders claimed the tournament title following a 3-0 weekend. DOWDY, CAVE MAKE ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Texas Tech senior Amanda Dowdy and junior Miara Cave were both named to the TCU Invitational AllTournament team after leading the Red Raiders to a second-place showing. MORE BALANCE, BETTER RESULTS If there was one consistent variable in Tech’s opening weekend, it would be that the Red Raiders have more balance on offense. The trio of Amanda Dowdy, Miara Cave, and Breeann David all had at least 10 kills each in both of the first two matches. In the process, Tech’s hitting percentage rose to a .256 average over three matches, including a .388 mark against UConn, the Red Raiders’ highest attacking percentage since defeating South Florida in three sets on Sept. 9, 2006. DAVID JOINS ELITE COMPANY Since the Red Raiders joined the Big 12 in 1996, no Tech freshman has begun her career with doubledigit kill figures in back-to-back matches. That is until Breeann David. The Denver City product finished with 11 kills against TCU and followed with 14 the following day against UConn. David finished with a .500 hitting percentage against UConn as she was 14-for-24 on the attack en route to posting Tech’s highest individual hitting percentage since Barbara Conceicao recorded a .526 average on Sept. 11, 2009 against Gonzaga.
State in the opening set, Flora went with a lineup to start the second frame that consisted of all freshmen. Tory Vaughan was the only Red Raider junior or senior to see action over the match’s final two sets as Tech played all 17 players that traveled that weekend. DOWDY NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-BIG 12 Senior Amanda Dowdy was recognized prior to the season as Tech’s only selection on the Preseason All-Big 12 team. Dowdy was among the top offensive players in the conference a year ago en route to be selected to the All-Big 12 first team following the season. This marks the second-straight season Dowdy has been honored on the preseason and first as a unanimous selection. MEYERS ADDS EXPERIENCE AT SETTER With such a young roster, the Red Raiders will rely on senior setter Karlyn Meyers at the setter position. A two-year starter, Meyers is one of the most-accomplished setters in school history as she is already among the top 10 all-time in career assists and assists per set average. RED RAIDERS WILL BE YOUNG Texas Tech will be one of the younger teams in the country as 15 of the program’s 21 players are listed as either a freshman or sophomore. Two of the squad’s six upperclassmen, juniors Ciara Gibson and Kelly Chiffer, will both redshirt this season, giving the Red Raiders only four upperclassmen on the court - seniors Amanda Dowdy and Karlyn Meyers and juniors Miara Cave and Tory Vaughan. FLORA ADDS VETERAN ASSISTANT IN CORONEL One of the first things Don Flora said he wanted once he arrived at Texas Tech was to hire another proven assistant. He got his wish when Jojit Coronel compiled the Tech staff. Coronel, the head coach at George Washington the previous 10 seasons, joins fellow assistant Beth Falls and director of operations Amy Gandy. CAVE PRIMED FOR STELLAR JUNIOR SEASON When asked who his most improved player was at the end of spring, Don Flora did not have to hesitate to say Miara Cave. Flora’s has described Cave’s spring as “going back to the basics” as the junior primarily worked on her footwork. The result has been a newfound confidence for Cave, who will be looking to improve on last season’s numbers where she was second on the team with 176 kills. DAVID LOOKS TO FOLLOW FAMILY LEGACY Breeann David’s commitment to Texas Tech last spring not only gave the program one of the top recruits in the country, but it continued a family legacy. David’s mother, the former Megan McGuire, was a standout volleyball athlete for Tech in the 1980s while her father, Stan David, starred on the football team during the same time before being drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the 1984 NFL Draft. Both her mother and aunt, Susan Kelly McGuire, are still among the top 10 in school history of every blocking category. David’s older sister, Leah David, is also the team’s student manager.
