MONDAY 6 OFF DAY
WEEK 13: at BAYLOR • GAMES 54-56 LEADING OFF... • Texas Tech will be looking to boast its postseason resume this weekend as the Red Raiders enter the series ranked No. 56 in the latest RPI poll that is widely used for postseason selections. Tech is fifth among Big 12 schools and just one spot back of Kansas. • The Red Raiders are coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of No. 7 Texas last weekend at Rocky Johnson Field. The sweep dropped Texas Tech to 3-12 in Big 12 play entering this weekend. • Texas Tech has 29 wins on the year, one shy of reaching the 30-win mark for the fourth-straight year under Shanon Hays, a feat that has not previously been accomplished in school history. Tech recorded threestraight winning seasons from 1997-99 under head coach Renee Luers-Gillespie. • Texas Tech is looking to close the regular season with a series win for the second-straight year as the Red Raiders took two-of-three games from Oklahoma State. • Despite boasting a lineup that uses three or four freshmen per game, the Red Raiders are coming close to becoming just the second team in school history to record a team batting average over .300. Tech is currently hitting .301 entering this week which would be the second-highest average all-time at Texas Tech, trailing only the .341 clip from the 2011 season. • The Red Raiders are just one double shy of matching the Texas Tech single-season record of 84 that was set during the 2011 season. Nearly half of Texas Tech’s total has come from the trio of Sandy James, Katelyn Williams and Mikey Kenney, who have totaled 41 doubles entering this week. A LOOK AROUND THE DIAMOND • Mikey Kenney connected on her 12th home run of the season, as well as her third during Big 12 play this year, last Saturday against Texas. It was Kenney’s 44th home run of her illustrious career, which moved her into a tie for 11th in Big 12 history along with Baylor’s Chelsi Lake (2004-07), Oklahoma’s Heather Scaglione (2002-05) and Kansas’ Serena Settlemier (2002, 04-06). She needs two more home runs to tie Ashli Barrett (1998-01) of Oklahoma. • Kenney is on pace to become just the second Red Raider to record an on-base percentage over .500 as she enters this weekend with a .520 average that ranks 34th in the country. Kim Martinez posted the highest onbase percentage in school history in 1997 when she totaled a .527 clip. • Kenney has traditionally been Texas Tech’s most successful player against the Baylor pitching staff as she is a career .364 hitter (8-for-22) against the Lady Bears with three home runs, seven RBI and four runs scored. • Sandy James leads the Big 12 in doubles entering this week as the senior has 16 on the year, one more than Kansas’ Maggie Hull. James totaled 18 doubles during her first two seasons combined, giving her 34 now for her career, sixth-most in Texas Tech history. • Like James, Katelyn Williams also ranks among the Big 12 leaders in doubles as her 13 on the year are tied for third in the conference. Kenney is also among the league leaders as her 12 doubles rank sixth as well. • Williams heads into the Baylor series with a team-high .367 batting average, which at this time ranks sixth in single-season history. It would be the second-highest average for a Red Raider sophomore since Emily Bledsoe hit at a .373 clip in 2010. • Adriana Perez is 38th in the country entering the weekend with a team-high 14 home runs. The senior, who now has 29 home runs during her Texas Tech career, is two shy of matching Sandy James’ single-season record of 16 from the 2011 season. • Samantha Camello has been the most successful Texas Tech freshman at the plate this season as the Temecula, Calif. native is hitting .298 on the year. It is the highest batting average for a Red Raider starting freshman since teammate Mikey Kenney hit .312 during her inaugural season in scarlet and black in 2010. • Camello is looking to become just the sixth Red Raider starting freshman to hit .300 or better, joining Kenney (2010), Stephanie Drewry (2009), Ashley Parker (2004), Sandy Butler (1998) and Paula Workman (1997). • Despite facing one of the top base running teams in the country against Texas, Lexie Elkins was able to throw out three Longhorns trying to steal a base. Elkins had previously thrown out just two runners during the season, a steady improvement for the 17-year-old freshman. INSIDE THE BAYLOR SERIES Despite winning the 2012 series with Baylor, Texas Tech trails the overall series with the Lady Bears, 29-11, including a 11-5 mark in games played in Waco. The Red Raiders last traveled to Waco in 2010, Shanon Hays’ first season with the Red Raiders, when the two teams split a pair of 1-0 victories. Tech won the 2012 series with a walk-off win in the rubber match as Mikey capped a three-run seventh inning with a RBI single that scored Logan Hall. It was Tech’s third victory over Baylor under Hays, who is 3-4 all-time in the series. Prior to his arrival, Tech had lost 13 of the previous 17 meetings between the two schools. All five of the facilities highest attendance figures have come in the past four seasons, including the 1,025 who saw last Sunday’s series finale with No. 7 Texas. The crowd ranked as the second-largest in Rocky Johnson Field history and followed the 923 fans that saw last Saturday’s game, the third-largest ever. Approximately 2,470 fans witnessed the Texas series, the largest series total since the Big 12 moved to three games a year ago.

TEXAS TECH ENTERS CRUCIAL FINAL WEEKEND The Red Raiders head into the final weekend of the regular season needing a series win in order to boost their postseason resume. Texas Tech dropped one spot this week to No. 56 in the ratings percentage index (RPI) poll that is widely used to determine postseason selections. Baylor enters this week ranked 25th in the poll, giving the Red Raiders a top-25 opponent in order to improve its ranking. Tech advanced to the first of three-straight postseason trips under Shanon Hays in 2010 after being ranked No. 45 in the final poll. It was the lowest RPI ranking during Hays’ tenure. RED RAIDERS BOAST FOURTH-STRAIGHT WINNING SEASON Texas Tech’s series win at Iowa State guaranteed the Red Raiders a winning record for a fourth-straight season, marking the longest such streak in school history. Tech had previously recorded winning seasons from 1997-99 under head coach Renee Luers-Gillespie. The Red Raiders, who are now 29-24 on the year entering this weekend’s regular season finale, have won at least 30 games in each of Shanon Hays’ three seasons, including 40-plus wins in both 2011 and 2012. Prior to Hays’ arrival, Tech had not recorded a winning season since 2001 when the Red Raiders went 37-24 en route to advancing to the NCAA Tucson Regional. It was one of four winning seasons for Tech until 2010 when Hays led the Red Raiders to a 38-18 record and a trip to the NCAA Stanford Regional. HAYS RECORDS WIN NO. 150 AT TEXAS TECH Texas Tech’s series win in the rubber match at Iowa State marked Shanon Hays’ 150th while with the Red Raiders. Hays, who became the program’s all-time winningest coach earlier this season, is currently an impressive 148-71 (.676 winning percentage) during his three-plus seasons in the Tech dugout. He is also 264-91 in his six combined seasons both at Tech and crosstown Lubbock Christian University. MIKEY, MIKEY, MIKEY ... To say Mikey Kenney’s career as a Red Raider hasn’t been highly successful might be an understatement. The senior ranks among the top 10 in nearly every career category in school history as well as several Big 12 records. Texas Tech’s all-time leader for runs scored, home runs and walks, Kenney enters the regular-season finale as a career .327 hitter which ranks second for a four-year player in school history, only behind Sandy Butler’s .337 average from the 1998-2001 seasons. Below is a listing of where Kenney currently ranks in both the Texas Tech and Big 12 record books entering this week: Mikey Kenney in the Texas Tech & Big 12 record books Record (career) Tech Big 12 Total Batting Average (career) 3rd - .327 At-Bats (career) 3rd - 649 Hits (career) 2nd - 212 Runs (career) 1st T-7th 196 Runs (single-season) 1st - 60 (2011) RBI (career) 1st - 145 Home Runs (career) 1st T-11th 44 Home runs (single-season) T-2nd - 15 (2010) Doubles (career) 3rd - 39 Stolen Bases (career) 3rd - 47 Walks (career) 2nd - 111 Walks (single-season 1st - 41 (2013) Games Played (career) 6th - 223 WILLIAMS SOLIDIFIES MIDDLE OF TEXAS TECH LINEUP Katelyn Williams’ sophomore season has been nothing but success so far as she boosted the Texas Tech offense with a .367 batting average to go along with nine home runs and 38 RBI. Williams, who totaled just one home run and 10 RBI during her freshman season, has recorded a team-high 16 multiple-hit games this year and nine multiple-RBI performances as well. She is currently among the Big 12 leaders in hits, doubles, total bases and slugging percentage. Williams has recorded 102 total bases this year, which ranks in a tie for ninth all-time in the Tech single-season record book with Mikey Kenney’s total from the 2010 season. Kenney leads the Red Raiders with 104 total bases, which is the most in her career and ranks sixth in program history. TEXAS TECH FINDS SUCCESS IN OPENING INNING One mantra for Shanon Hays has always been to jump on opponents early. The Red Raiders have followed through with that this year as Tech is outscoring its opponents, 52-23, in the first inning alone. Tech has scored in the opening inning 22 times already this year, compiling a 16-6 record during those games alone. The Red Raiders are also 23-8 when scoring before their opponent this year and an impressive 116-20 when doing so under fourth-year head coach Shanon Hays. Tech has struggled, though, when trailing early as the Red Raiders are 6-16 when their opponents score first this season. Tech has won just two games this year when trailing after the fourth inning as the Red Raiders are 2-16 in those games. PEREZ RANKS AMONG TOP HOME RUN HITTERS IN THE COUNTRY Adriana Perez connected on her 14th home run of the season and her second so far during Big 12 play in the series opener at Iowa State. Perez currently ranks 38th nationally in home runs this year and is just two off the Texas Tech single-season school record set by Sandy James in 2011. The Lancaster, Calif. native trails Oklahoma’s Lauren Chamberlain as the sophomore has belted 22 home runs already this year. Perez enters this weekend hitting .292 on the year with a team-high 49 RBI that ranks fourth in the Big 12 Conference. Perez has hit 29 home runs in just over a season at Tech, which ranks third all-time in school history.
WEEK 13: at BAYLOR • GAMES 54-56 SENIORS TAKE OVER TOP THREE SPOTS ON CAREER HOME RUN CHART With Adriana Perez’ three-run home run in the series opener at Oklahoma State, Texas Tech’s three seniors of Perez, Mikey Kenney and Sandy James now rank as the top three home run hitters in school history. Kenney leads the group with 44 career home runs followed by James with 34 and Perez with 29. Perez passed Kim Martinez (1997, 1999) for third all-time as she hit a three-run homer in the third inning against Oklahoma State. Kenney also hit two solo shots in the series opener against the Cowgirls, marking her third multiple home run game this season and the fourth of her career. TEXAS TECH AMONG THE TOP OFFENSES IN THE COUNTRY ... AGAIN One staple for Texas Tech under Shanon Hays has been boasting one of the top offenses in the nation the past two seasons. Even with a reworked lineup that normally consists of three or four freshmen, the Red Raiders enter this week ranked 27th nationally in scoring and 16th in doubles per game. Tech is also just outside the top 30 for batting average (45th), slugging percentage (36th), and home runs per game (45th). The Red Raiders ranked among the national leaders in several offensive categories in 2012, a year after ranking fourth in both scoring and batting average. RED RAIDERS LOOK TO REPEAT STRONG PERFORMANCE IN BIG 12 PLAY FROM A YEAR AGO Texas Tech are looking to repeat its strong performance from last year in Big 12 play as the Red Raiders finished fifth in the conference standings with a 13-10 record. It was Tech’s first winning conference record since 2001 when the Red Raiders finished 10-8 and advanced to the second NCAA Regional in school history. Texas Tech has never recorded a winning Big 12 record in back-to-back seasons since softball returned as an NCAA sport in 1996. KENNEY NOTCHES 200TH CAREER HIT Mikey Kenney recorded yet another career milestone at the Rebel Classic as the senior notched her 200th career hit against Boise State. She is one of just three players in school history to reach 200 hits for a career, joining Sandy Butler and Ashley Parker. Butler connected on a school-record 256 career hits from 1998-2001 while Parker finished right at 200 hits during her four seasons from 2004-07. Kenney, who has 51 hits already this year, passed Parker for second all-time at Oklahoma State as she has now totaled 212 hits in her four seasons. The Arvada, Colo. native is already the Texas Tech all-time leader in runs scored, home runs and walks and ranks among the top 10 in every other career offensive category. JOHNSON CONTINUES TO REACH BASE AT TOP OF THE LINEUP Through 53 games this season, Shelby Johnson has done exactly what Shanon Hays envisioned when he recruited the junior college transfer - reach base. The Jefferson, Ga. native opened the year reaching base in the first 30 games, the longest streak to start a season since Emily Bledsoe reached in the first 34 games of the 2011 campaign. Johnson has reached in 45 of 53 games this year as she is third on the team with a .449 on-base percentage that only trails Mikey Kenney’s .520 average and Sandy James; .454 clip. Johnson has benefited from a patient eye at the plate as she has drawn 33 walks this year, sixth-most in Tech singleseason history. The junior matched the Texas Tech single-game record for hits with her 5-for-5 performance against IPFW on March 9 where she also drove in a season-high six RBI. Johnson matched the school record that was set by Stephanie Drewry on Feb. 27, 2009, against South Florida. She currently ranks among the Big 12 leaders in hits, runs scored, walks, and stolen bases. RED RAIDERS BEGIN TO FIND POWER TO CLOSE HOMESTAND Texas Tech belted 12 home runs during the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic and then three more in a doubleheader against Bryant and Fairfield. The Red Raiders are more than half way to their school-record total from the 2012 season as Tech enters the Oklahoma State series with 39 home runs this year. Tech snapped the single-season record for the second-straight season a year ago as the Red Raiders connected on 66 home runs. After starting the season with impressive power numbers, Tech will have to get back on pace in order to break the record once again as the 2012 club had 52 home runs through 38 games a year ago. HAYS PICKS UP CAREER WIN NO. 250 AGAINST IPFW Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays earned his 250th career victory as a collegiate softball coach on March 9 when the Red Raiders rolled past IPFW, 12-4, in six innings. Hays already became the winningest coach in Texas Tech history already this year with a season-opening win over Central Florida. The fourth-year skipper is now 260-76 in six seasons as a collegiate coach and 146-60 while at Texas Tech. JAMES BECOMES TEXAS TECH ALL-TIME RBI LEADER Sandy James snapped the Texas Tech career RBI record at the Troy Cox Classic as the senior drove in nine runs on the weekend. She now has 142 RBI for her career, which passes the previous mark of 114 set by both Paula Workman (1997-2000) and former teammate Emily Bledsoe (2009-12). The Kilgore, Texas native broke the record with a second-inning grand slam against UMKC on Friday that was part of a five-RBI performance. She also added a three-run double the following day against the Kangaroos. James also holds a narrow lead on current teammate Mikey Kenney, who enters this weekend with 135 career RBI which ranks second alltime in school history.

HAYS BECOMES ALL-TIME WINNINGEST COACH ON OPENING WEEKEND Shanon Hays became the winningest coach in Texas Tech history on opening weekend when the Red Raiders topped Central Florida, 12-4, for Hays’ 122nd victory. The win helped Hays pass Renee Luers-Gillespie, UCF’s current head coach who also led Tech to a 121-133-1 record in just over four seasons from 1996 to several weeks into the 2000 season. Hays is now 147-67 during his three-plus seasons in the Tech dugout.

WEEK 13: at BAYLOR • GAMES 54-56 ELKINS HAS SUCCESSFUL START TO COLLEGIATE CAREER As a collegiate athlete for just over a month, Lexie Elkins probably couldn’t imagine such a successful opening weekend. The 17-year-old freshman went 4-for-8 at the plate with a pair of doubles and two RBI while making three starts behind the plate at the Sportco Kick-Off Classic. She became the first freshman to earn the opening-day start at catcher since Holley Gentsch in 2009. Gentsch went on to Tech’s primary catcher behind the plate during her four-year career before becoming Tech’s graduate student manager this season. RED RAIDERS RECEIVE VOTES IN BOTH PRESEASON POLLS For the third-straight season, Texas Tech will start the season receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and the ESPN/USA Softball preseason polls. The Red Raiders picked up 12 points in both polls to fall just outside of the top 25. One of five Big 12 schools appearing in either poll, Tech will face a total of eight teams this season that are ranked or receiving votes in the preseason rankings. HEART OF THE LINEUP RETURNS FOR 2013 SEASON Despite the graduation of a school record eight seniors from a year ago, the Red Raiders still return the heart of their 2012 lineup in seniors Sandy James, Mikey Kenney and Adriana Perez. The trio led Texas Tech in batting average, home runs and RBI a year ago to help send the Red Raiders to their third-straight NCAA Regional appearance. In addition, all three players currently rank among the Tech all-time leaders in multiple single-season and career categories in the school record book. James, Kenney and Perez accounted for 39 of Tech’s school record 66 home runs last season and nearly half the team’s total RBI while recording the squad’s three highest averages. PITCHING DEPTH TO BE A PLUS WITH RETURN OF CUSTER, TALLEY For associate head coach Aly Sartini, the return of several familiar faces in the circle this season has the fourth-year pitching coach feeling good about her rotation as the Red Raiders return their two mainstays in the circle from a year ago in sophomore Cara Custer and junior Brittany Talley. As only a freshman, Custer became just the second 20-win pitcher in school history a year ago, joining the great Amanda Renfro, who owns the majority of single-season and career records in Texas Tech history. Custer and Talley will receive help in the circle from returning senior Ashley Brokeshoulder along with talented freshmen Gretchen Aucoin, Shannon Carrico and Tess McPherson. YOUTH TO BE SERVED EARLY IN 2013 After having a group of returners scattered throughout the infield in 2012, Shanon Hays will see several new faces around the diamond this season as the Red Raiders return only one starting infielder from a year ago in first baseman Sandy James, who will also see time behind the plate. Texas Tech had a senior at each infield spot last year, minus first base, but will turn to a talented group of freshmen this season, notably Samantha Camello, Brooke Scott and Nikki Dunlap. Camello and Scott will likely see action up the middle while Dunlap will join returning junior Taylor Powell at either third or second base. PEREZ, KENNEY PICK UP PRESEASON ACCOLADES Texas Tech seniors Adriana Perez and Mikey Kenney were honored in early January on the Preseason All-Big 12 teams selected by the website collegesportsmadness.com. Perez led the two selections as she was one of 12 players named to the first team while Kenney picked up second team honors in the outfield. It marked the second-straight year Tech had two players honored on the website’s preseason teams as Sandy James and Emily Bledsoe were both second-team recipients prior to the 2012 season. Perez also picked up third-team All-American honors by the website as well as she was joined by 10 other Big 12 players on one of the publication’s four preseason All-America teams. JAMES MAKES THE MOVE BEHIND THE PLATE Following the graduation of four-year starter Holley Gentsch at catcher, Sandy James made the move behind the plate this past fall where she will split time with freshman Lexie Elkins. James, who was Texas Tech’s primary first baseman the past two seasons, caught throughout her prep career at Sabine High School and was behind the plate occasionally her freshman season at Angelo State.
6 // 2013 TEXAS TECH SOFTBALL
ELKINS ADDS DEPTH BEHIND THE PLATE AT A YOUNG AGE For Lexie Elkins, age is only a number. As just a 17-year-old, Elkins will likely be one of the youngest, if not the youngest, players in the country this season as the Victoria, Texas native graduated high school a semester early in order to join the Red Raiders in early January. Elkins, a three-year starter for Victoria East High School, will give Texas Tech additional depth at catcher as she will combine with Sandy James for the majority of starts behind the plate. Elkins was the Co-Newcomer of the Year of district 30-5A during her 2010 freshman season and followed up by being named the district Co-MVP as a sophomore. She also garnered honorable mention All-American accolades in 2011 by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. JAMES, KENNEY TO BATTLE FOR CAREER HOME RUN LEAD Mikey Kenney and Sandy James will battle throughout the 2013 season for which senior finishes her career as the school’s all-time home run leader. Kenney, who broke Kim Martinez’ previous school record of 27 midway through last season, enters the year with 32 career home runs, five more than James. Kenney belted 13 home runs last season while James added 12 as well as both players are prominant in the Tech single-season record book as well. James set the single-season mark with 16 home runs in 2011 during her first season in scarlet and black, breaking the previous mark of 15 that was held by Martinez (1997) and Kenney (2010). SCHOONMAKER, SIGREST AMONG NEW FACES IN THE TECH DUGOUT Texas Tech will have two new faces in its dugout this season as assistant coach Chrissy Schoonmaker and volunteer assistant Sarah Sigrest are both entering their first year with the program. Schoonmaker arrives at Texas Tech after spending the past two seasons as the volunteer assistant at her alma mater, South Carolina. Sigrest, meanwhile, comes to Tech following a highly-successful pitching career at Jacksonville where she helped lead the Dolphins to their first NCAA Regional appearance in school history. RED RAIDERS GET OKLAHOMA, TEXAS BOTH AT HOME With five of seven Big 12 Conference teams currently ranked or receiving votes in either top-25 poll, Texas Tech will once again have its hands full when league play begins in late March. One positive for the Red Raiders, though, is that the conference’s two top-ranked teams - No. 2 Oklahoma and No. 7 Texas - will both travel to Lubbock for three-game sets this season. Tech will host the defending national runner-up Sooners on March 12-14 before Texas makes its trip to the South Plains on March 26-28. The Red Raiders went 18-4 last season at Rocky Johnson Field which includes a win over the then-No. 5 Longhorns in Texas’ only trip during the season to Lubbock. RED RAIDERS TO MAKE FIRST EVER APPEARANCE ON ESPN Texas Tech will make its first ever appearance on the ESPN Family of Networks in May as the Red Raiders’ series opener at Baylor will air nationally on ESPN. The game was originally set to air on ESPN2 before being upgraded in late Feburary. The three-game series was set to begin on May 3 but will instead move to a Thursday-Saturday format. The Big 12 television schedule includes five conference games this season that will air on either ESPN or Fox Sports. RED RAIDERS PICKED FOURTH IN BIG 12 PRESEASON POLL Texas Tech earned its highest Big 12 preseason ranking in school history in January as the Red Raiders were picked to finish fourth in the seven-team league. The fourth-place nod marked the Red Raiders’ highest preseason selection since the poll was created prior to the 2000 season, breaking the previous mark from 2001 when Tech was slotted to finish tied for sixth. Oklahoma was picked as the preseason favorite for the fourth time in the last five years as the Sooners, who finished as the national runner-up a year ago, notched 36 points in the poll followed by Texas with 29 and third-place Baylor with 28. Tech earned 20 points to finish ahead of Oklahoma State (20), Kansas (12) and Iowa State (6) in the poll.

HEAD COACH
SHANON HAYS 6th Season Overall • 4th Season at Texas Tech • Lubbock Christian ‘91 Career Record: 264-91 • Record at Tech: 150-75
In three seasons as Texas Tech’s head softball coach, Shanon Hays has transformed the Red Raiders into not only a contender in the Big 12 Conference, but nationally as well with three-straight NCAA Regional appearances. After inheriting a program that was only 15-42 in 2009, Hays has led the Red Raiders to back-to-back 40-win seasons as he has amassed a 121-51 record in three seasons, leaving the Lubbock native just 18 wins shy of already becoming the winningest coach in school history. Most importantly, though, the Red Raiders have been in the postseason in each of Hays’ three seasons, advancing to the NCAA Stanford Regional in 2010, the Tucson Regional in 2011, and then the Seattle Regional a year ago. Tech fell in the regional finale in each of his first two seasons before Harvard ended Tech’s run in an elimination game in 2012. Prior to his arrival, Tech had only advanced to the postseason twice in program history and had not recorded a winning record since 2001. The Red Raiders, who had also finished no better than eighth in the Big 12 standings in seven of the previous eight seasons, had never advanced to a regional in consecutive seasons as well. Hays quickly changed that in 2010, though, as he helped lead the Red Raiders to a 38-18 record, a 23-win improvement from the year before, as well as a seventh-place finish in the league standings. The Red Raiders fell to eventual College World Series participant Hawaii in the Stanford Regional after Tech overcome a first-day loss by topping both UC Davis and the host Cardinal to make its way into the regional finale. With the majority of that squad returning the following year, the Red Raiders wrapped the 2011 campaign with a 42-16 overall record that marked the highest winning percentage in school history. It was also just Tech’s second 40-win season all-time as the Red Raiders were also 45-19 in 1998. Hays became the program’s first coach to lead the Red Raiders to multiple postseason appearances later in the year as Tech was the No. 2 seed in the Tucson Regional. After overcoming another first-day loss, Tech fell to host Arizona in the championship game. The Red Raiders had possibly their best season under Hays in 2012 as Tech ended the year fifth in the Big 12 standings behind a 13-10 league record, marking the program’s highest finish and first winning conference record since 2001. Tech navigated a 13-game stretch against top-25 teams midway through league play where the Red Raiders finished 7-6 with series wins over No. 25 Baylor and at No.
9 Missouri along with a midweek victory over No. 5 Texas. Tech wrapped the regular season with a No. 23 ranking in the rating-percentage index (RPI) poll, seven spots higher from where it ended 2011. The Red Raiders also appeared in the top-25 rankings before closing the season by receiving votes for the second-straight season. School records have fallen in droves under Hays as Tech has broken over 20 single-season marks in just three seasons, including the majority of the offensive record book. In 2011 alone, the Red Raiders snapped the single-season records for batting average, runs, hits, doubles, home runs, grand slams, RBI, total bases, slugging percentage and walks. Hays has regularly produced one of the top lineups in the nation as the Red Raiders spent most of the 2011 season with the highest batting average in the nation before ending the year fourth overall. Tech’s .341 average that year was not only the highest in school history but it also snapped the Big 12 record that was previously set by Oklahoma in 2001. The Red Raiders also averaged 7.17 runs per game, a mark that ranked fourth in the nation as well. In addition to hitting for average, pitches have left the ball park in record numbers under Hays as Tech belted 58 in 2011 before smashing a school-record 66 a year later. Seven of the highest single-season individual totals have come in the last three seasons with Sandy James leading the group with a schoolrecord 16 home runs in 2011. Mikey Kenney also owns the career record as she has totaled 32 home runs entering the 2013 season. Tech’s transformation should come as little surprise after Hays’ work at Lubbock Christian. Following his appointment as the program’s first head softball coach in 2006, Hays worked for a full academic year in preparation for LCU’s first season in 2008. The Lady Chaps did not disappoint in their inaugural season, compiling a 60-9 record and claiming the NAIA National Championship which earned Hays NAIA National Coach of the Year honors. Hays wrapped his two-year tenure at LCU with a 114-16 overall record after advancing to the national championship again in 2009. Known as a top-flight recruiter and motivator, Hays was named the Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year both seasons and produced five NFCA and NAIA first team All-Americans during his tenure. Hays turned to softball after a successful career as a basketball coach that included two seasons on the Texas Tech bench as an assistant coach from 19992001 under James Dickey. He is the first person at Texas Tech to coach two completely different sports (one men’s and now one women’s).

Hays comes from a family of coaches as his father, legendary Texas Tech baseball coach Larry Hays, roamed the Red Raider dugout from 1987-2008, where he picked up 1,509 career wins, fifth-most in NCAA history. When not coaching on the diamond, Larry Hays also could be found on the fastpitch softball circuit where he pitched for several of the top local and national men’s teams. Like his father, Shanon Hays also began playing fastpitch softball as a youth, along with both baseball and basketball, and competed on the summer circuit as well. Shanon Hays began and ended his college career at LCU, graduating in 1991 with his degree in Education after also attending Texas Tech and competing from 1988 - 1990 for his father on the Red Raider baseball team. He competed for LCU prior to that on both the baseball and basketball teams. He graduated from Lubbock Monterey High School in 1986 and makes his home in Lubbock with his wife, Tina, two sons, Hunter and Heath, and daughter, Hampton. #WRECKEM \\ @TECHATHLETICS \\ 7
