QUICK HITS • Texas Tech will get its final non-conference test this week prior to opening Big 12 play as the Red Raiders travel to face

Incarnate Word at 6 p.m. Monday evening and then Texas State at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday night. • Monday night’s match with Incarnate Word will be the first all-time between the two schools. The Cardinals are the final first-time opponent for the Red Raiders this year as Tech has already faced Seattle, Grand Canyon, Washington State, South Dakota State and Cal State Fullerton. • Incarnate Word is in its first season as a Division-I opponent this year as the Cardinals joined the Southland Conference in July. Incarnate Word will be looking for its first-ever victory over a Division-I foe after the Cardinals fell to Texas-Pan American in five sets last Tuesday. • Texas Tech’s match Tuesday evening at Texas State will mark just the second time in the Big 12 era where the Red Raiders have traveled to face the Bobcats in San Marcos. Tech, which is 17-4 all-time against Texas State, last played Texas State on the road on Sept. 2, 2009, when the Bobcats handed the Red Raiders a 3-0 loss. Tech is 4-3 all-time against the Bobcats in San Marcos. The two schools are 2-2 against each other during the Big 12 era. • The Red Raiders will take a week off following Tuesday night’s contest at Texas State as Texas Tech does not return to the court until the Sept. 25 conference opener at Oklahoma. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. first serve at McCasland Field House in Norman. • This week will be Texas Tech’s final round of non-conference action until Oct. 23 when the Red Raiders host New Mexico at the United Spirit Arena. The match is a rescheduled contest from the 2012 season. • The Red Raiders will be closing out their busiest stretch of the season this week as the Texas State match ends a sevenday stretch where Texas Tech will have played a total of six matches. Tech is currently 1-3 during that span. • The Red Raiders are coming off a disappointing 1-2 showing in their own Lone Star Showing this past weekend where Texas Tech fell in straight sets to both Montana and Cal State Fullerton while also pulling off a 3-0 victory over Nevada. • Despite the two losses last weekend, Texas Tech continues to boast an impressive record in non-conference action under third-year Don Flora, who has led the Red Raiders to a 31-14 mark in such matches during his tenure. • Rachel Brummitt heads into this week as the Big 12 Conference leader in digs as the junior has totaled 251 already this season at a 5.58 per set rate. She is well on pace to snap her Tech single-season digs record from a year ago when she recorded 510 digs. • Behind Brummitt’s performance on the back row, Texas Tech enters this week as the Big 12 leaders in digs per set. The Red Raiders are currently averaging a conference-best 16.51 digs per set.

The Red Raiders will get a full week off following Tuesday night’s match at Texas State before opening Big 12 play on Sept. 25 in Norman, Okla., against the Oklahoma Sooners. Texas Tech will host two of its first three conference matches at the United Spirit Arena as the Red Raiders host Iowa State on Oct. 2 and West Virginia on Oct. 5.

After such a memorable debut in scarlet and black a year ago, it may seem difficult to picture Rachel Brummitt duplicating or even surpassing her record-setting numbers from 2012. The junior is well on her way to doing that, though, as she is currently on pace to surpass the 510 digs she recorded a year ago. Brummitt enters this week with 251 digs over 45 total sets, five fewer sets than from the 2012 season when she had 231 digs through 13 matches. She is averaging a Big 12-best 5.58 digs per set, almost a full dig higher than her average at this point a year ago. Her digs per set average moved into the Big 12 lead last weekend as the extended her streak of having 20-plus digs to five-straight matches. DAVID STARTS OFF JUNIOR YEAR IN STYLE

For Breeann David, the 2013 season probably couldn’t have gotten off to a better start. The hard-hitting junior has totaled a team-high 128 kills in 10 matches this season where she has averaged 4.00 per set, the highest total currently in the Big 12. The Denver City, Texas native started off the year by posting 10 or more kills in each of the first six matches of the season, the longest streak to start a season since Kelly Johnson did so in the first seven matches of the 2004 season. David is also the conference leader in service aces per set (0.47) and points per set (5.06) as well. SETTING THE PIPE(R)

If the start of the 2013 campaign is any indication, Aubree Piper’s senior season could be a special one. The lone senior on the Texas Tech roster, Piper, who has battled several injuries throughout her career, is Tech’s second-leading offensive player so far this year, totaling 127 kills at a 2.82 per set rate. Her presence in the middle has not just been felt offensively, though, as she has also recorded 28 blocks while adding nine service aces. The Amarillo, Texas native has posted a .291 hitting percentage through 10 matches, the highest total on the team for players with at least 100 attempts this year. Her nine service aces also rank third as well.

FOUR MATCHES ADDED TO TEXAS TECH’S TELEVISION SCHEDULE

Texas Tech added four matches to its 2013 television schedule this past week as four Big 12 matches will be broadcast through FOX Sports platforms, beginning Oct. 2 with Iowa State. Texas Tech will be closing out a seven-day stretch Tuesday evening where the Red Raiders have played a total of six matches during that span. Tech faced Abilene Christian last Tuesday and then played three matches at home last weekend during the Lone Star Showdown before heading to battle Incarnate Word and Texas State on Monday and Tuesday this week. The Red Raiders, who are currently 1-3 during this stretch, will take a week off following the Texas State match before opening Big 12 play on Sept. 25 at Oklahoma.

RED RAIDERS LOOK TO CONTINUE SUCCESS AGAINST NON-CONFERENCE OPPONENTS

Texas Tech will look to continue its dominance over non-conference foes this week at Incarnate Word and Texas State. The Red Raiders are a combined 31-14 all-time against out-of-league opponents under third-year head coach Don Flora, who is also 26-10 during his tenure in non-conference tournaments. Tech turned in a 14-2 record in non-conference action during Flora’s first season in 2011 and then posted an 11-5 mark a year ago.

FLORA PICKS UP CAREER WIN NO. 300 ON OPENING WEEKEND

Texas Tech head coach Don Flora earned his 300th career victory at the collegiate level during opening weekend when the Red Raiders dropped Grand Canyon in four sets at the Wildcat invitational. The Red Raiders are now 6-8 on the year, improving Flora’s overall record to 304-101 in 13-plus seasons at both the University of La Verne in California as well as Texas Tech. Flora, arguably one of the winningest active coaches at the Division-I level, led Tech to 29 victories over his first two seasons after inheriting a program that totaled just 30 wins in the five seasons prior to his arrival. The California native currently ranks fourth among Big 12 Conference coaches in career victories, trailing only Ray Bechard (Kansas), Jerritt Elliott (Texas) and Jim Barnes (Baylor). All three coaches have longer career tenures than Flora, who arrived in Lubbock after two seasons as an assistant at New Mexico State and 11 years as the head coach of his alma mater in La Verne where he amassed a 269-59 record (.820 winning percentage) and led the Leopards to the 2001 NCAA Division III National Championship. OPENING SET USUALLY KEY FOR THE RED RAIDERS

One of Don Flora’s mantra’s since his arrival in West Texas prior to the 2011 season has been to jump on opponents early. Through 13 matches this year, Texas Tech has been fairly successful at doing so, winning six of the 13 opening sets so far. Tech is a perfect 6-0 when gaining the opening lead this season and an impressive 29-6 under Flora when doing so as well. The Red Raiders have also never lost a 2-0 lead under Flora, going a perfect 20-0 over two-plus seasons.

Rachel Brummitt and Mikia Mills also earned a selection to the Wildcat Invitational all-tournament team after the two juniors helped lead the Red Raiders to a 3-1 showing in the event. Brummitt totaled a team-high 75 digs from the back row, averaging 5.36 per set which ranks third in the Big 12 after one weekend. She ended the tournament with a match-high 26 digs against host Weber State, marking the ninth time in her Tech career where she has reached the 20-dig mark. Mills, meanwhile, connected on 39 kills, second-most on the team, while adding nine digs and 11 blocks to collect her first alltournament honor of her career. The middle blocker delivered 25 kills over the final two matches, including a career-high 13 in Tech’s four-set victory over Grand Canyon. Teammate Breeann David shared Most Valuable Player honors as well.

ENSCH MAKES IMPRESSIVE DEBUT IN UTAH

Texas Tech freshman Courtney Ensch made what seemed to be a smooth transition to collegiate volleyball at the Wildcat Invitational as she connected on 26 kills from the right side while also adding eight digs and five blocks. Ensch, who arrived at Tech from Southlake Carroll High School, had one of the most accurate performances for a Red Raider in recent memory against Grand Canyon as she recorded 12 kills off just 19 attempts. Ensch had only two hitting errors in the match for a .526 hitting percentage, which was the highest for a Red Raider since Lydia McKay totaled the same average on Sept. 14 last year against Houston Baptist. Ensch closed the weekend hitting .327 over 13 sets, the second-highest percentage on the team.

PIPER RETURNS AS TEXAS TECH’S LONE SENIOR

When Aubree Piper looks walks across the court later this season on Senior Night, she will be the only player on Tech’s 19-person roster to receive flowers and framed jersey. The four-year senior, who has started in 52 matches the past three seasons, will be Tech’s leader both on the court and in the locker room for a program that despite returning 12 letterwinners also boasts seven newcomers. Piper enters her senior season with 440 career kills to go along with 174 total blocks and a .242 career hitting percentage. She ended 2012 with a .312 hitting percentage, which ranked ninth in school history for a single season. The Amarillo, Texas native is Tech’s most experienced returner, having played in 72 career matches despite battling various injuries throughout her career.

WHAT CAN BRUMMITT DO NEXT FOR TECH?

After a record-breaking inaugural season in scarlet and black, the best question pertaining to Rachel Brummitt might just be what can she do next? The junior libero shattered the Tech single-season record in 2012 with 510 digs from the back row, finishing with 62 more than previous record holder Melissa McGehee (2000). The Plano, Texas native wrapped the 2012 season ranked fourth in the Big 12 for digs per set (4.32), trailing only Kristin Hahn (Iowa State), Brianne Riley (Kansas) and Maria Fernanda (Oklahoma). A similar, if not better, performance this year would already place Brummitt near the top 10 on the Tech career chart as well as Ginger Carter currently sits in 10th place with 1,092 digs from the 1991-94 seasons. Lisa Hilgers owns the Tech career record for digs after totaling 1,583 from 1995-98 that also ranks ninth in Big 12 history entering the 2013 season as well.

THE DENVER CITY HAMMER

Not shy from coining nicknames, Texas Tech head coach Don Flora has long referred to junior outside hitter Breeann David as the “Denver City Hammer.” Named for both her hometown of nearby Denver City, Texas, as well as her hard-hitting ability, David enters her junior season as one of Tech’s key offensive weapons after she led the team with a 2.77 kills per set average a year ago. David, a six-rotation players normally, totaled 213 digs in 2012 despite missing six matches due to an ankle injury that sidelined her early into Big 12 play. David, who comes from a family of Texas Tech athletes, has also posted 239 digs and 135 blocks over her first two seasons in scarlet and black. Her father, Stan David, was a standout football player for the Red Raiders and eventual 1984 NFL Draft selection by the Buffalo Bills. Her mother, Megan David (formerly McGuire), also starred on the volleyball team while at Tech where she still ranks in the top 10 in most career blocking categories. Her younger brother, Clancy David, is also a walk-on football team currently at Tech.

Like David, Texas Tech is also expecting sophomore transfer Jenna Allen to become an immediate presence on the outside as the newcomer joined the program last spring after spending the 2012 season at South Carolina. Allen appeared in 30 matches while making nine starts for the Gamecocks where she finished fourth on the team with 122 kills while also adding a 102 digs from the back row. Allen is one of two transfers for the Red Raiders from the Southeastern Conference (SEC), joining Lauren Douglass who arrived this fall from Ole Miss.

HINNEBURG NAMED BIG 12 PRESEASON CO-FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR

Texas Tech freshman Victoria Hinneburg was named the Big 12 Preseason Co-Freshman of the Year prior to the season, marking the first time a Red Raider has ever garnered the award. Hinneburg, a native of Leipzig, Germany, is just the third Red Raider to earn a conference preseason award, joining Colleen Smith (1999) and Justine Young (2010) who were both named the league’s Newcomer of the Year. One of the top international prospects in the 2013 class, Hinneburg will give Tech plenty of size and ability for the years to come as she is the tallest Red Raider listed on the roster at 6-4. Hinneburg shared the award with Kansas State’s Katie Brand.

TECH TO BECOME FAMILIAR WITH BOTH ACU AND MONTANA

While playing opponents twice during the season is customary during Big 12 play, the Red Raiders will get to know both Abilene Christian and Montana well this year as Tech is scheduled to play both schools twice during the non-conference portion of the schedule. Tech opens its home slate next Tuesday (Sept. 3) against Abilene Christian and then travels roughly 120 miles south to face the Wildcats again on Sept. 10 in Abilene. The Red Raiders have never played two non-conference opponents twice in a season during the Big 12 era. Tech played both SMU and Grambling State twice during the 1996 and 2011 seasons, going 4-0 in those matches.

RED RAIDERS TO MAKE FIRST-EVER APPEARANCE ON ESPN

The Texas Tech volleyball program will face Iowa State in front of a national television audience on Oct. 30 as the Red Raiders and Cyclones were picked prior to the season to appear on ESPNU as part of the Big 12 Conference’s television schedule for the 2013 season. The match is part of a Big 12 double-header on the network as Baylor and Kansas will face off at 6 p.m. CT in Lawrence before the Red Raiders and Cyclones open with an 8 p.m. first serve later in the evening at Hilton Coliseum in Ames. This will be Tech’s first ever appearance on an ESPN network (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU). The Red Raiders are 20-17 all-time against the Cyclones and 10-8 when playing in Ames.

DOUGLASS TO SIT OUT 2013 SEASON

Redshirt freshman Lauren Douglass will sit out the 2013 season due to NCAA transfer policy. Douglass, a native of Flower Mound, Texas, transferred to Tech from Ole Miss where she redshirted the 2012 campaign while recovering from injury. She will have three years of eligibility remaining beginning in the 2014 season.

RED RAIDERS PICKED TO FINISH TIED FOR 7TH IN BIG 12 PRESEASON POLL Texas Tech was picked to finish tied for seventh in the Big 12 preseason poll that is voted on annually by the conference coaches. It was the highest preseason nod for the Red Raiders since 2001 when Tech was selected to sixth in what was then an 11-team league. The Red Raiders 19 points to finish tied for seventh with TCU while West Virginia rounded out the poll in ninth place. Texas was named the preseason favorite as the defending national champions garnered eight of nine first-place votes to sit in front of Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma and Baylor. BIG 12 CONTINUES TO BE AMONG TOP VOLLEYBALL CONFERENCES

The Big 12 will once again be one of the toughest volleyball conferences nationally this season as the league is boosted by preseason favorite and top-ranked Texas, while No. 15 Iowa State and No. 20 Kansas are also ranked in the top-25 of the AVCA preseason poll. Both Oklahoma and Kansas State received votes in the poll as well. The Big 12 has earned five or more bids to the NCAA Tournament in each of the past four seasons with Texas claiming the national title from a year ago.
