Tech’s selection in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll is the highest ranking in school history. Tech’s last appearance in the top 25 came at No. 24 in the NFCA poll at the conclusion of the 1999 season. TECH OFF TO BEST START IN SCHOOL HISTORY The Red Raiders 4-1 win over Indiana moved Tech to 4-0 on the season, its best start in school history. The school’s most successful start previously was its 3-0 opening in 1998. Tech is currently 11-0 heading into this weekend’s Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic. UP NEXT The Red Raiders continue the long homestand next weekend with the Red Raider Classic as Howard and Dayton make the trip to Lubbock for a three-day round robin tournament, March 4-6, at Rocky Johnson Field.

Primarily a reliever with her success out of the pen; recorded 1.50 ERA.

Texas Tech players and head coach Shanon Hays will be made available to the media outside the home dugout following a brief cooling off period. The Texas Tech lockerroom is will remain closed.

ROCKY JOHNSON FIELD Rocky Johnson Field opened in 2001, giving Texas Tech one of the newest softball facilities in the country. In the 10 years since its opening, the complex has gone through several changes, including the addition of the team facility down the left field line which opened in 2010, making “The Rock” one of the finest facilities in the country. DIRECTIONS TO ROCKY JOHNSON FIELD Rocky Johnson Field is located on 10th Street near University Medical Center (UMC). The softball complex is adjacent to the McLeod Tennis Center and can be best reached via Texas Tech Parkway. FROM THE AIRPORT: Take I-27 South from Regis Street and exit west on the Marsha Sharp Freeway. Take the Texas Tech Parkway exit and turn north (right) for a quarter of a mile until you reach the first stop light (10th Street). Turn back east (right) and Rocky Johnson Field will be on the right side.

RED RAIDERS AGAINST ALL OPPONENTS • St. John’s - Tech will meet the Red Storm for the first time in school history. • Northern Illinois - Like St. John’s, Tech will be facing the Huskies for the first time in program history. • Wichita State - Tech and the Shockers will be meeting for the 12th time as Wichita State maintains a slight 6-5 lead over the Red Raiders. Tech took two of three games from Wichita State last year. JEANNINE MCHANEY MEMORIAL CLASSIC Texas Tech will honor the university’s long-considered founder of women’s athletics this weekend with the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic. The Red Raiders will face St. John’s, Northern Illinois, and Wichita State in the three-day event that runs Feb. 25-27 at Rocky Johnson Field. McHaney was the first athletics director when the women’s athletics department was formed in 1975 and remained a top member of the athletics department for the next two decades. She passed away in 1994. HALL BOOSTS MIDDLE OF THE ORDER To say Logan Hall had a successful Texas Tech Invitational might be an understatement. The junior infielder hit .611 at the plate (11-for-18) with 11 RBIs, three of which came off a three-run home run against Utah Valley in the weekend finale. Hall leads Tech with 16 RBIs on the year and has recorded a .444 average, second-highest on the team. SPEAKING OF HALL... Logan Hall began last weekend with a memorable performance against Utah Valley in the early game on Friday. The junior smashed two triples in the game, tying Denise Jackson for the school record that had not been matched since the 1997 season. Jackson hit two triples against New Mexico that year on Feb. 7. HOME RUN WATCH BEGINS FOR KENNEY Mikey Kenney’s two home run day on Sunday moved the sophomore into a tie for fourth on the school’s career homer chart. She is now tied with Jennifer Bowers (2005-08) with 17 career dingers and is three from tying Jennifer Corking (2005-08) for third all-time. After matching the single-season record with 15 home runs as a freshman, it’s not a stretch to think Kenney could some day match Kim Martinez’ school record of 27. www.texastech.com

RED RAIDERS AMONG THE FINAL UNBEATEN Texas Tech enters this weekend as one of the few unbeaten teams left in the country. According to Ultimate College Softball, only 10 teams (Alabama, Auburn, Baylor, Georgia, Kansas, Lousiana-Lafayette, Michigan, South Carolina-Upstate, Texas, and Texas Tech) with double-digit victories are also undefeated through games Tuesday night. OFFENSE HIGH IN THE BIG 12 RANKINGS Through 11 games, the Red Raiders are hitting .397 at the plate, the third-highest average in the Big 12, trailing only Oklahoma (.399) and Texas (.398). Tech’s 97 runs scored is also ranked second in the league behind Oklahoma’s 113 total. ALLEN EXPECTED TO BE FINE Despite taking a foul ball off her leg Sunday, Cydney Allen is expected to be in the lineup Friday when the Red Raiders kickoff the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic against Northern Illinois. Allen was removed from the game against Bryant and did not appear later that day against Utah Valley. RED RAIDERS CONTINUE LONG HOMESTAND The Red Raiders are currently in the middle of a 25game homestand that began with the Texas Tech Invitational last weekend. Tech will play at home for nearly a month, hosting two more separate tournaments and a midweek doubleheader against New Mexico before heading to South Florida for the USF - The Game Tournament. The homestand is the longest in school history. TECH LOOKS TO BREAK SCHOOL RECORD If the Red Raiders are able to repeat last weekend’s perfect performance, Tech would snap the longest winning streak in school history. The current record is 15-straight games set from Feb. 13-March 6 last season. Tech enters the weekend having won its first 11 games of the season.

RICHARDSON, HALL AIM TO EXTEND STREAKS Logan Hall and Raven Richardson will both be looking to extend hit streaks this weekend as Hall has had a hit in eight-straight games while Richardson has added one in seven straight. ALLEN MAKES SUCCESSFUL DEBUT After only one weekend in a Red Raider uniform, Cydney Allen has already proved why she was one of the most highly sought-after recruits in the nation coming out of Salt Lake Community College. The junior catcher had a hit in each of Tech’s game at the Kajikawa Classic and had at least two hits in four of five games. Allen finished with a .556 average off a team-high 10 hits, including a two-run home run against Indiana as part of her five RBIs on the week.

BIG 12 PROVES TOUGH ONCE AGAIN To say the Big 12 schedule will be a cake-walk for any team would be an exaggeration. Seven of the conference’s 10 schools appeared in one of the two major top 25 polls this week with one more (Baylor) also receiving votes.
GAMES ENDING EARLY Through 11 games thus far, Texas Tech has ended five of those earlier than the required seven innings thanks to the eight-run mercy rule BLEDSOE DELIVERS TOP-FIVE MOMENT Emily Bledsoe has had many significant hits in her Texas Tech career, but few may have been bigger than her two-run walkoff home run against Appalachian State that sent Tech to a 10-9 come-frombehind victory. The junior described the hit as a “top five moment” during Monday’s media session. TALLEY TALLIES UP THE RESULTS For being only a freshman, Brittany Talley had a lot of responsibility on her left arm in Arizona. The Little Elm, Texas native got the start against both No. 16 BYU and No. 12 Cal, picking up the win against the Golden Bears. Talley was an out away from a complete game win over BYU before the Cougars responded with a game-tying two-run home run. After going 5.1 innings against Cal, Talley returned to the circle later in the night to close the Indiana game, going the final 2.2 innings to earn the save. DON’T FORGET ABOUT DREWRY With all the individual successes of the Kajikawa Classic, the play of Stephanie Drewry should not be forgotten. The junior outfielder went 2-for-3 at the plate against Appalachian State and drove in a career-high five RBIs while posting a .467 average for the weekend. HAMADA RELIABLE IN NO. 9 SLOT Ashley Hamada has proved much more than the average No. 9-hole hitter, recording a .429 average through 11 games, the fourth-highest total on the team. KERM PROVING TO BE SOLID RELIEVER Freshman Kermitria Ward proved to be a reliable arm out of the bullpen in Arizona, picking up the win against BYU before earning the save against Cal. The Texas 4A Player of the Year as a high school senior, Ward recorded a 2.74 ERA in 7.2 innings during her collegiate debut. HAYS CELEBRATES SUCCESSFUL BIRTHDAY Tech’s wins over No. 12 Cal and Indiana last Saturday was no ordinary day at the park for head coach Shanon Hays. The second-year coach was celebrating his birthday and received a nice gift in Tech’s second victory over a ranked opponent of the weekend. KENNEY MOVES TO LEADOFF SPOT After spending most of the 2010 season in the middle of the Tech lineup, Mikey Kenney moved to the leadoff spot to start this season. Known as one of Tech’s top power hitters, Kenney recorded a .353 average, including two doubles and four RBIs.
BYU GAME MARKS A FIRST FOR TECH Prior to last weekend, Texas Tech had never gone to extra innings in its season opener. The Red Raiders were an out away from ending the game in the seventh, but instead won, 7-5, in nine innings. EARLY TEST SHOULD HELP LATE The Red Raiders trip to Arizona should pay dividends when Big 12 play begins as Tech faced two of the top teams in the nation in BYU and Cal. The conference currently has seven schools ranked among the top 25 nationally with another receiving votes in Baylor. ALLEN TO FACE FORMER SCHOOL Junior catcher Cydney Allen might see a few familiar faces in the opposite dugout during Tech’s seasonopener against BYU. Allen appeared in 11 games for the Cougars as a freshman in 2009 before transferring to Salt Lake Community College in 2010. HALL RETURNS TO HOME STATE Logan Hall returned to her home state for the Kajikawa Classic. Hall, a native of Tucson, Ariz., played one season at Pima Community College before transferring to Tech for the 2010 season where she was an All-Big 12 second team selection. EIGHT STARTERS RETURN FROM REGIONAL TEAM With eight starters returning in the field from the 2010 squad that advanced to the NCAA Stanford Regional, the Red Raiders should have a wealth of experience to rely on when Big 12 play begins. Tech lost Leah Legler, Danielle Matthews, and pitcher Ashly Jacobs from last season’s 38-18 team. ALL-BIG 12 TRIO RETURNS Tech’s trio of All-Big 12 second team selections from a year ago in Emily Bledsoe, Logan Hall, and Mikey Kenney all return to the diamond this spring. Bledsoe and Hall will both be juniors, while Kenney will be entering only her sophomore season. The trio combined for 31 home runs and 122 RBI last season, giving Tech three reliable bats in the lineup. NO SENIORS, NO PROBLEM The Red Raiders will have one noticeable difference in their roster than every other school in the Big 12 - Tech has no seniors on its 2011 roster. Instead, second-year head coach Shanon Hays will rely on an experienced group of 11 juniors. RED RAIDERS TURN TO NEW ARMS Following the graduation of former standout pitcher Ashly Jacobs, Tech will look at several new faces in the circle, including junior college transfer Kelsey Dennis and freshmen Brittany Talley and Kermitria

HOME SWEET HOME The Red Raiders will play 35 of their 54 games at Rocky Johnson Field this season, beginning with the Texas Tech Invitational, Feb. 18-20. Tech will host four-straight weekends of round robin tournaments and a midweek doubleheader against New Mexico before completing non-conference play in Florida for the UCF Tournament. The Red Raiders begin Big 12 play with their first five conference games at home as Missouri, Oklahoma, and Baylor all travel to Lubbock. Tech will also have home series against Kansas and in-state rival Texas. Tech’s 35 home games is the most in school history. TECH RECEIVES VOTES IN PRESEASON POLL Texas Tech enters the 2011 season earning votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball polls as the Red Raiders picked up four votes in each poll. HAYS ADDS SIX NEWCOMERS Even with most of his roster from a year ago back, Tech head coach Shanon Hays added seven newcomers this spring, most notably junior college transfers Cydney Allen and Kelsey Dennis and freshman Kermitria Ward. Ryba spent the past two seasons at Northern Colorado. “THE ROCK” SEES NEW ADDITION Fans entering Rocky Johnson Field this season will see a new addition just off the warning track - a new outfield wall. A black, padded wall replaced the chain-link fence that had been in place since the park’s opening in 2001. The wall also extends down the outfield foul lines.
TECH SIGNS FIVE IN FALL PERIOD Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays announced the signing of five future student-athletes to national letters of intent this fall as Hannah Bell, Cara Custer, Chandler Moore, Adriana Perez and Katelyn Williams will all join the program for the 2012 season. 2010 SEASON IN REVIEW u Texas Tech returned to a NCAA Regional last season for the first time in 10 seasons, eventually falling to Hawaii in the championship game of the regional, held on the Stanford campus in Palo Alto, Calif. Hawaii went on to advance to the College World Series. u Emily Bledsoe, Logan Hall, and Mikey Kenney were all named to the All-Big 12 second following after all three players hit over .300 for the season and had at least 40 RBI. u Tech finished the year 38-18 overall, the secondmost wins in school history. u Ashly Jacobs wrapped her stellar career in a Tech uniform with a 15-9 record and team-best 2.01 earned-run average. u In only her true freshman season, Mikey Kenney tied the Tech single-season record with 15 home runs to go along with 40 RBI. u Tech swept 7th-ranked Oklahoma State in a Wednesday doubleheader on April 22, taking the first game, 6-0, before winning the finale, 4-1. u The Red Raiders finished the non-conference portion of the schedule 28-4 before turning to Big 12 play. HEAD COACH SHANON HAYS • 2nd Season • Lubbock Christian ‘91 No stranger to building programs, Shanon Hays took over as head coach of the Texas Tech softball team in 2010 and immediately led the Red Raiders back to the NCAA postseason in only his first season, laying the groundwork for a program on the rise. The fifth head coach since the resurrection of the program in 1996, Hays helped guide the Red Raiders to a 23-win improvement last year from the 2009 season, while eventually advancing all the way to the championship game of the NCAA Stanford Regional. Under Hays, all facets of the game improved as the Tech hitters snapped the school record for runs, slugging percentage, and home runs in a season, while the pitching staff boasted its lowest earnedrun average since 2001 and the Tech defense committed its fewest errors in school history. Most importantly, Tech’s win-loss record received the biggest improvement under Hays, whose 38-18 record in his first season is the best finish for a firstyear head coach in program history. Three Tech players - Emily Bledsoe, Logan Hall, and Mikey Kenney, were named to the All-Big 12 second team following the regular season. appointment as the program’s first head softball coach in 2006, Hays worked for a full academic year in preparation for LCU’s first season in 2008. The Lady Chaps did not disappoint in their inaugural season, compiling a 60-9 record and claiming the NAIA National Championship, earning Hays NAIA National Coach of the Year honors. Hays wrapped his two-year tenure at LCU with a 114-16 overall record after advancing to the national championship again in 2009. Known as a top-flight recruiter and motivator, Hays was named the Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year both seasons and produced five National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and NAIA first team All-Americans during his tenure. Hays turned to softball after a successful career as a basketball coach that included two seasons on the Texas Tech bench as an assistant coach from 19992001 under James Dickey. He is the first person at Texas Tech to coach two completely different sports (one men’s and now one women’s). Prior to accepting the softball position at LCU, Hays was the associate head men’s basketball coach at the University of Houston in 2005-06. Working under head coach Tom Penders, Hays found his knack as a recruiter, helping sign one of the nation’s top 15 recruiting classes in only his first season where the Cougars won 18 games and advanced to a national tournament for the first time in three years.
Hays began playing fastpitch softball as a youth, along with baseball and basketball, because his father, the legendary Texas Tech and LCU baseball coach Larry Hays, also played fastpitch softball. Hays, the elder, whose 1,509 wins were good enough for fourth on the all-time collegiate baseball list, retired as Tech’s all-time winningest coach prior to the 2009 season. In a rare twist, Larry Hays succeeded his son at LCU for one season prior to Daren Hays, Shanon’s brother and former Tech assistant baseball coach and director of operations, accepted the position to lead the Lady Chaps beginning with the 2011 season. Shanon Hays began and ended his college career at LCU, graduating with his degree in Education in 1991 after also matriculating at Texas Tech and competing from 1988 - 1990 for his father on the Red Raiders’ baseball team. He competed for LCU prior to that in both baseball and on the basketball teams. He graduated from Lubbock Monterey High School in 1986 and makes his home in Lubbock with his wife, Tina, his two sons, Hunter, Heath, and his daughter, Hampton.
