WEEK 6: SAN DIEGO STATE CLASSIC • GAMES 30-34 INSIDE THE FAIRFIELD SERIES Texas Tech and Fairfield met for the first time in school history Wednesday with the Red Raiders taking a 7-1 victory behind seven strong innings from Brittany Talley. The Stags were the third first-time opponent for Tech this season, joining IPFW and Troy. INSIDE THE SETON HALL SERIES The Red Raiders will be facing Seton Hall for the second-straight year as Texas Tech traveled to Newark, N.J. last year over Spring break to take part in the Seton Hall Invitational. Tech run-ruled the Pirates twice in the tournament with 11-0 and 9-0 routs. Cara Custer tossed her first career no-hitter in the first game against Seton Hall while the Tech offense connected on four home runs as well. Adriana Perez also drove in a careerhigh seven RBI in the championship game while Custer frustrated Seton Hall again with a two-hit shutout. INSIDE THE BUFFALO SERIES Buffalo will be the fourth first-time opponent for Texas Tech this year, joining IPFW, Troy and Fairfield.

The Red Raiders, who have won four of the last five meetings with the Aztecs, are 2-1 all-time against SDSU in San Diego. This is Tech’s first time to face the Aztecs in San Diego since splitting a March 17, 2009, doubleheader.

ON DECK The Red Raiders return to Las Vegas for the second time this season next weekend for the Rebel Classic hosted by UNLV. Texas Tech will face No. 20 Tulsa and the host Rebels on March 22 before battling Boise State in a doubleheader the following day. RED RAIDERS IN THE MIDST OF BUSIEST STRETCH OF THE SEASON Texas Tech continues its busiest stretch of the season this week as the Red Raiders will play a total of seven games over five days in San Diego. The Red Raiders are coming off a seven-game weekend where Tech went 6-1 overall in the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic hosted at Rocky Johnson Field. In all, the Red Raiders are int he midst of a 14-game stretch that takes place in only 10 days. CAMELLO, PEREZ RETURN TO FAMILIAR GROUNDS Samantha Camello and Adriana Perez will be playing in their home state this week for the first time in a Red Raider uniform. Camello hails from Temecula, Calif., which is roughly an hour north of San Diego while Perez’ hometown of Lancaster is just north of Los Angeles, a three-hour drive from San Diego. Both Southern California standouts have started in all 29 games this year for the Red Raiders. HAYS PICKS UP CAREER WIN NO. 250 AGAINST IPFW Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays earned his 250th career victory as a collegiate softball coach last Saturday when the Red Raiders rolled past IPFW, 12-4, in six innings. Hays already became the winningest coach in Texas Tech history already this year with a season-opening win over Central Florida. The fourth-year skipper is now 256-75 in six seasons as a collegiate coach and 142-59 while at Texas Tech. PEREZ CONTINUES TEAR ON OPPOSING PITCHERS WITH 12 HOME RUNS Through 29 games this year, it is easy to say that Adriana Perez is likely bound for a record-breaking season as the senior is among the national leaders with 12 home runs already this year. Perez lifted home run No. 11 and 12 last weekend during the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic as she is now just four shy of Sandy James’ single-season school record that was set in 2011. The Lancaster, Calif. native ranks second in the country entering this week in home runs as she only trails Oklahoma’s Lauren Chamberlain, who has totaled 13 already this season. Perez is also hitting .385 on the year with a team-high 40 RBI that ranks first currently in the Big 12 Conference. The single-season mark for RBI belongs to Kim Martinez, who drove in 70 runners in 1997. Perez has now hit 27 home runs in just over a season at Tech, moving her into a tie for third with Martinez on the school’s career chart. JOHNSON CONTINUES TO REACH BASE IN RECORD-SETTING WEEKEND Through 29 games this season, Shelby Johnson has done exactly what Shanon Hays envisioned when he recruited the junior college transfer - reach base. The Jefferson, Ga. native is the only Red Raider to reach base in all 29 games, marking the longest streak for a Red Raider to start a season since Emily Bledsoe reached in the first 34 games of the 2011 campaign. Johnson is coming off her best weekend yet in a Red Raider uniform as she hit .652 in the Jeannine McHaney Classic (15-for-22) with 10 runs scored, 10 RBI and five stolen bases. The junior matched the Texas Tech single-game record for hits with her 5-for-5 performance against IPFW on Saturday where she also drove in a season-high six RBI. Johnson matched the school record that was set by Stephanie Drewry on Feb. 27, 2009, against South Florida. She currently ranks among the Big 12 leaders in hits, runs scored, on-base percentage, walks, and stolen bases.

4 // 2013 TEXAS TECH SOFTBALL
Red Raiders are currently on pace to snap the school’s single-season record set just a year ago when Tech totaled 66 home runs. The 2012 club only had 29 home runs through the first 29 games before eventually snapping the school record that was also broke in 2011 as well. Tech’s 12 home runs last weekend marked its most in a tournament this season. TEXAS TECH FINDS SUCCESS IN OPENING INNING One mantra for Shanon Hays has to always jump on opponents early. The Red Raiders have followed through with that this year as Tech is outscoring its opponents, 46-7, in the first inning alone. Tech has scored in the opening inning 18 times already this year, compiling a 14-4 record during those games alone. The Red Raiders are also 17-4 when scoring before their opponent this year and an impressive 110-16 when doing so under fourth-year head coach Shanon Hays. NOTABLES • The Red Raiders’ 21-8 start to the season is one win shy of its record through 29 games a year ago where the Red Raiders eventually finished 41-17 and advanced to an NCAA Regional for the third-straight season. • The Red Raiders will look to continue their success in non-conference action under Shanon Hays this weekend as Texas Tech is 117-25 against out-of-conference foes in his three-plus seasons. • Mikey Kenney drew 11 walks in the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic alone, giving her 93 for her career, one back of Tech’s all-time leader Sandy James. • After totaling four doubles last weekend, James is now the Big 12 leader in the category as she has 12 on the year which is three more than her season totals from both 2011 and 2012. James leads Texas’ Taylor Thom, who has 10 doubles entering this week. • Mikey Kenney entered this weekend ranked among the Big 12 leaders in runs scored (2nd), home runs (3rd), total bases (5th), slugging percentage (6th), and on-base percentage (4th). The senior has reached base in 25 of 27 games so far as well. • Katelyn Williams leads the Red Raiders with a .444 average that currently ranks sixth in the Big 12. Williams has also totaled six home runs and 27 RBI so far this season as well, both career highs. • In the circle, Cara Custer and Brittany Talley both rank among the conference leaders in most pitching categories, including wins, innings pitched, strikeouts, appearances, and games started. JAMES BECOMES TEXAS TECH ALL-TIME RBI LEADER Sandy James snapped the Texas Tech career RBI record at the Troy Cox Classic as the senior drove in nine runs on the weekend. She now has 122 RBI for her career, which passes the previous mark of 114 set by both Paula Workman (1997-2000) and former teammate Emily Bledsoe (2009-12). The Kilgore, Texas native broke the record with a second-inning grand slam against UMKC on Friday that was part of a five-RBI performance. She also added a three-run double the following day against the Kangaroos. James also holds a narrow lead on current teammate Mikey Kenney, who enters this weekend with 113 career RBI which ranks fourth all-time in school history. HAYS BECOMES ALL-TIME WINNINGEST COACH ON OPENING WEEKEND Shanon Hays became the winningest coach in Texas Tech history on opening weekend when the Red Raiders topped Central Florida, 12-4, for Hays’ 122nd victory. The win helped Hays pass Renee Luers-Gillespie, UCF’s current head coach who also led Tech to a 121-133-1 record in just over four seasons from 1996 to several weeks into the 2000 season. Hays is now 134-58 during his three-plus seasons in the Tech dugout. ELKINS HAS SUCCESSFUL START TO COLLEGIATE CAREER As a collegiate athlete for just over a month, Lexie Elkins probably couldn’t imagine such a successful opening weekend. The 17-year-old freshman went 4-for-8 at the plate with a pair of doubles and two RBI while making three starts behind the plate at the Sportco Kick-Off Classic. She became the first freshman to earn the opening-day start at catcher since Holley Gentsch in 2009. Gentsch went on to Tech’s primary catcher behind the plate during her four-year career before becoming Tech’s graduate student manager this season. RED RAIDERS FIND SUCCESS IN THE OPENING INNING If one thing was evident at the Sportco Kick-Off Classic in Las Vegas, the Red Raiders were ready from the beginning as Texas Tech plated at least one run in the opening inning four times in five games. In three of those games, the Red Raiders opened with significant leads thanks to four first-inning runs. Tech scored in the first inning 24 times a year ago and was 20-4 in those games. The Red Raiders are 5-2 this year when scoring in the opening frame. RED RAIDERS RECEIVE VOTES IN BOTH PRESEASON POLLS For the third-straight season, Texas Tech will start the season receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and the ESPN/USA Softball preseason polls. The Red Raiders picked up 12 points in both polls to fall just outside of the top 25. One of five Big 12 schools appearing in either poll, Tech will face a total of eight teams this season that are ranked or receiving votes in the preseason rankings. HEART OF THE LINEUP RETURNS FOR 2013 SEASON Despite the graduation of a school record eight seniors from a year ago, the Red Raiders still return the heart of their 2012 lineup in seniors Sandy James, Mikey Kenney and Adriana Perez. The trio led Texas Tech in batting average, home runs and RBI a year ago to help send the Red Raiders to their third-straight NCAA Regional appearance. In addition, all three players currently rank among the Tech all-time leaders in multiple single-season and career categories in the school record book. James, Kenney and Perez accounted for 39 of Tech’s school record 66 home runs last season and nearly half the team’s total RBI while recording the squad’s three highest averages.
WEEK 6: SAN DIEGO STATE CLASSIC • GAMES 30-34 PITCHING DEPTH TO BE A PLUS WITH RETURN OF CUSTER, TALLEY For associate head coach Aly Sartini, the return of several familiar faces in the circle this season has the fourth-year pitching coach feeling good about her rotation as the Red Raiders return their two mainstays in the circle from a year ago in sophomore Cara Custer and junior Brittany Talley. As only a freshman, Custer became just the second 20-win pitcher in school history a year ago, joining the great Amanda Renfro, who owns the majority of single-season and career records in Texas Tech history. Custer and Talley will receive help in the circle from returning senior Ashley Brokeshoulder along with talented freshmen Gretchen Aucoin, Shannon Carrico and Tess McPherson. YOUTH TO BE SERVED EARLY IN 2013 After having a group of returners scattered throughout the infield in 2012, Shanon Hays will see several new faces around the diamond this season as the Red Raiders return only one starting infielder from a year ago in first baseman Sandy James, who will also see time behind the plate. Texas Tech had a senior at each infield spot last year, minus first base, but will turn to a talented group of freshmen this season, notably Samantha Camello, Brooke Scott and Nikki Dunlap. Camello and Scott will likely see action up the middle while Dunlap will join returning junior Taylor Powell at either third or second base. PEREZ, KENNEY PICK UP PRESEASON ACCOLADES Texas Tech seniors Adriana Perez and Mikey Kenney were honored in early January on the Preseason All-Big 12 teams selected by the website collegesportsmadness.com. Perez led the two selections as she was one of 12 players named to the first team while Kenney picked up second team honors in the outfield. It marked the second-straight year Tech had two players honored on the website’s preseason teams as Sandy James and Emily Bledsoe were both second-team recipients prior to the 2012 season. Perez also picked up thirdteam All-American honors by the website as well as she was joined by 10 other Big 12 players on one of the publication’s four preseason All-America teams. JAMES MAKES THE MOVE BEHIND THE PLATE Following the graduation of four-year starter Holley Gentsch at catcher, Sandy James made the move behind the plate this past fall where she will split time with freshman Lexie Elkins. James, who was Texas Tech’s primary first baseman the past two seasons, caught throughout her prep career at Sabine High School and was behind the plate occasionally her freshman season at Angelo State. ELKINS ADDS DEPTH BEHIND THE PLATE AT A YOUNG AGE For Lexie Elkins, age is only a number. As just a 17-year-old, Elkins will likely be one of the youngest, if not the youngest, players in the country this season as the Victoria, Texas native graduated high school a semester early in order to join the Red Raiders in early January. Elkins, a three-year starter for Victoria East High School, will give Texas Tech additional depth at catcher as she will combine with Sandy James for the majority of starts behind the plate. Elkins was the Co-Newcomer of the Year of district 30-5A during her 2010 freshman season and followed up by being named the district Co-MVP as a sophomore. She also garnered honorable mention All-American accolades in 2011 by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. JAMES, KENNEY TO BATTLE FOR CAREER HOME RUN LEAD Mikey Kenney and Sandy James will battle throughout the 2013 season for which senior finishes her career as the school’s all-time home run leader. Kenney, who broke Kim Martinez’ previous school record of 27 midway through last season, enters the year with 32 career home runs, five more than James. Kenney belted 13 home runs last season while James added 12 as well as both players are prominant in the Tech single-season record book as well. James set the single-season mark with 16 home runs in 2011 during her first season in scarlet and black, breaking the previous mark of 15 that was held by Martinez (1997) and Kenney (2010). SCHOONMAKER, SIGREST AMONG NEW FACES IN THE TECH DUGOUT Texas Tech will have two new faces in its dugout this season as assistant coach Chrissy Schoonmaker and volunteer assistant Sarah Sigrest are both entering their first year with the program. Schoonmaker arrives at Texas Tech after spending the past two seasons as the volunteer assistant at her alma mater, South Carolina. Sigrest, meanwhile, comes to Tech following a highly-successful pitching career at Jacksonville where she helped lead the Dolphins to their first NCAA Regional appearance in school history. RED RAIDERS GET OKLAHOMA, TEXAS BOTH AT HOME With five of seven Big 12 Conference teams currently ranked or receiving votes in either top-25 poll, Texas Tech will once again have its hands full when league play begins in late March. One positive for the Red Raiders, though, is that the conference’s two top-ranked teams - No. 2 Oklahoma and No. 7 Texas - will both travel to Lubbock for three-game sets this season. Tech will host the defending national runner-up Sooners on March 12-14 before Texas makes its trip to the South Plains on March 26-28. The Red Raiders went 18-4 last season at Rocky Johnson Field which includes a win over the then-No. 5 Longhorns in Texas’ only trip during the season to Lubbock.

HEAD COACH
SHANON HAYS 6th Season Overall • 4th Season at Texas Tech • Lubbock Christian ‘91 Career Record: 256-75 • Record at Tech: 142-59
In three seasons as Texas Tech’s head softball coach, Shanon Hays has transformed the Red Raiders into not only a contender in the Big 12 Conference, but nationally as well with three-straight NCAA Regional appearances. After inheriting a program that was only 15-42 in 2009, Hays has led the Red Raiders to back-to-back 40-win seasons as he has amassed a 121-51 record in three seasons, leaving the Lubbock native just 18 wins shy of already becoming the winningest coach in school history. Most importantly, though, the Red Raiders have been in the postseason in each of Hays’ three seasons, advancing to the NCAA Stanford Regional in 2010, the Tucson Regional in 2011, and then the Seattle Regional a year ago. Tech fell in the regional finale in each of his first two seasons before Harvard ended Tech’s run in an elimination game in 2012. Prior to his arrival, Tech had only advanced to the postseason twice in program history and had not recorded a winning record since 2001. The Red Raiders, who had also finished no better than eighth in the Big 12 standings in seven of the previous eight seasons, had never advanced to a regional in consecutive seasons as well. Hays quickly changed that in 2010, though, as he helped lead the Red Raiders to a 38-18 record, a 23-win improvement from the year before, as well as a seventh-place finish in the league standings. The Red Raiders fell to eventual College World Series participant Hawaii in the Stanford Regional after Tech overcome a first-day loss by topping both UC Davis and the host Cardinal to make its way into the regional finale. With the majority of that squad returning the following year, the Red Raiders wrapped the 2011 campaign with a 42-16 overall record that marked the highest winning percentage in school history. It was also just Tech’s second 40-win season all-time as the Red Raiders were also 45-19 in 1998. Hays became the program’s first coach to lead the Red Raiders to multiple postseason appearances later in the year as Tech was the No. 2 seed in the Tucson Regional. After overcoming another first-day loss, Tech fell to host Arizona in the championship game. The Red Raiders had possibly their best season under Hays in 2012 as Tech ended the year fifth in the Big 12 standings behind a 13-10 league record, marking the program’s highest finish and first winning conference record since 2001. Tech navigated a 13-game stretch against top-25 teams midway through league play where the Red Raiders finished 7-6 with series wins over No. 25 Baylor and at No. 6 // 2013 TEXAS TECH SOFTBALL
9 Missouri along with a midweek victory over No. 5 Texas. Tech wrapped the regular season with a No. 23 ranking in the rating-percentage index (RPI) poll, seven spots higher from where it ended 2011. The Red Raiders also appeared in the top-25 rankings before closing the season by receiving votes for the second-straight season. School records have fallen in droves under Hays as Tech has broken over 20 single-season marks in just three seasons, including the majority of the offensive record book. In 2011 alone, the Red Raiders snapped the single-season records for batting average, runs, hits, doubles, home runs, grand slams, RBI, total bases, slugging percentage and walks. Hays has regularly produced one of the top lineups in the nation as the Red Raiders spent most of the 2011 season with the highest batting average in the nation before ending the year fourth overall. Tech’s .341 average that year was not only the highest in school history but it also snapped the Big 12 record that was previously set by Oklahoma in 2001. The Red Raiders also averaged 7.17 runs per game, a mark that ranked fourth in the nation as well. In addition to hitting for average, pitches have left the ball park in record numbers under Hays as Tech belted 58 in 2011 before smashing a school-record 66 a year later. Seven of the highest single-season individual totals have come in the last three seasons with Sandy James leading the group with a schoolrecord 16 home runs in 2011. Mikey Kenney also owns the career record as she has totaled 32 home runs entering the 2013 season. Tech’s transformation should come as little surprise after Hays’ work at Lubbock Christian. Following his appointment as the program’s first head softball coach in 2006, Hays worked for a full academic year in preparation for LCU’s first season in 2008. The Lady Chaps did not disappoint in their inaugural season, compiling a 60-9 record and claiming the NAIA National Championship which earned Hays NAIA National Coach of the Year honors. Hays wrapped his two-year tenure at LCU with a 114-16 overall record after advancing to the national championship again in 2009. Known as a top-flight recruiter and motivator, Hays was named the Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year both seasons and produced five NFCA and NAIA first team All-Americans during his tenure. Hays turned to softball after a successful career as a basketball coach that included two seasons on the Texas Tech bench as an assistant coach from 19992001 under James Dickey. He is the first person at Texas Tech to coach two completely different sports (one men’s and now one women’s).

Hays comes from a family of coaches as his father, legendary Texas Tech baseball coach Larry Hays, roamed the Red Raider dugout from 1987-2008, where he picked up 1,509 career wins, fifth-most in NCAA history. When not coaching on the diamond, Larry Hays also could be found on the fastpitch softball circuit where he pitched for several of the top local and national men’s teams. Like his father, Shanon Hays also began playing fastpitch softball as a youth, along with both baseball and basketball, and competed on the summer circuit as well. Shanon Hays began and ended his college career at LCU, graduating in 1991 with his degree in Education after also attending Texas Tech and competing from 1988 - 1990 for his father on the Red Raider baseball team. He competed for LCU prior to that on both the baseball and basketball teams. He graduated from Lubbock Monterey High School in 1986 and makes his home in Lubbock with his wife, Tina, two sons, Hunter and Heath, and daughter, Hampton.
