RED RAIDERS BEGIN EIGHT-MATCH ROAD TRIP AT UTPA Texas Tech opens the first of eight matches on the road Tuesday evening as the Red Raiders travel to TexasPan American for a 6 p.m. match at the UTPA Fieldhouse. TEXAS TECH OFF TO BEST START SINCE 2003 The Red Raiders enter Tuesday night’s match boasting a 5-1 record, marking the program’s best start since the 2003 squad rallied off eight-straight wins to start the season. THE SERIES Texas Tech and Texas-Pan American will be meeting for the fifth time in school history as the Red Raiders enter the match with a 4-0 all-time advantage over the Broncs. Tech has won 12 of 13 total sets against UTPA, including a 3-0 sweep during its last match on Sept. 30, 2008. This will mark Tech’s first trip to Edinburg since taking part of the UTPA Classic in 2008. LOOKING AHEAD The Red Raiders will remain on the road for the remainder of this week as the team will travel to Ruston, La. on Wednesday to prepare for the Louisiana Tech Tournament which begins Friday afternoon. Tech will face Southeastern Louisiana and Grambling State Friday afternoon before closing the weekend against the host Lady Techsters on Saturday. The Red Raiders will head back to the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex next weekend to take part in the Texas-Arlington Tournament. Tech returns to the United Spirit Arena on Sept. 24 to open Big 12 play against Iowa State. NOTABLES u Texas Tech is currently riding a five-match winning streak, the school’s longest since winning five-straight from Sept. 2-6, 2006. u The Morehead State match snapped four-match streak where the Red Raiders had swept their opponent in three sets, a feat that had not been previously accomplished since 1999. u Texas Tech’s 3-0 homestand marked its best record at home to start a season since the 2004 squad opened the year with four-straight wins in Lubbock. u The Morehead State win helped Tech surpass its win total from the entire 2010 season as the Red Raiders are now 5-1 through six matches. Tech is now one win shy of matching its total from the 2009 and 2010 seasons combined. u Texas Tech opponents are only hitting .089 against the Red Raiders on the year, the lowest average among Big 12 Conference schools. Tech, meanwhile, is hitting .252, fourth-highest in the conference.

MATCH NOTES FLORA STARTS TECH CAREER IN STYLE Of the eight head coaches in school history, only two have better records in their first six matches than Don Flora. Donna Martin began her tenure in 1985 with a school-record nine-straight wins, while Nancy Todd won eight-straight to start her head coaching career in 2003. DOWDY LEADS TRIO OF PLAYERS ON ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Amanda Dowdy was one of three Red Raiders named to the Texas Tech Invitational all-tournament team as the senior picked up most valuable player honors. Fellow senior Karlyn Meyers and junior Miara Cave were also honored as the Red Raiders claimed the tournament title following a 3-0 weekend. TEXAS TECH INVITATIONAL MARKS A FIRST The Red Raiders’ tournament win last weekend at the Texas Tech Invitational was the program’s first since it claimed the North Texas Tournament to start the 2008 season. Tech had also not won its own home tournament since 2004 when the Red Raiders defeated UTPA, UTEP, and North Texas as part of the Red Raider Classic. CAVE ACCURATE FROM THE RIGHT-SIDE Coming into the season, Don Flora knew he had a special talent in Miara Cave. His only question was would that translate into kills when the Red Raiders hit the floor. The junior has proved Flora right so far as she is second on the team in kills with 62 while her .397 hitting percentage is among the Big 12 leaders. The San Antonio native has hit .400 or higher in five of six matches this season. VAUGHAN SNAPS CAREER HIGH After already matching her career high for digs twice this season, Tory Vaughan broke the 20 dig milestone in the tournament finale against Morehead State as the junior finished with 21 digs in the match. Her previous high had been 13 which she originally set against Texas State in 2009. PIPER BIG 12 LEADER IN BLOCKS Aubree Piper enters this week’s road trip as the Big 12 leader in blocks as the sophomore is averaging 1.87 per set. The sophomore has totaled 28 blocks on the season, having matched her single-match high twice last weekend during the Texas Tech Invitational. DOWDY, CAVE MAKE ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Texas Tech senior Amanda Dowdy and junior Miara Cave were both named to the TCU Invitational AllTournament team after leading the Red Raiders to a second-place showing last weekend.
MORE BALANCE, BETTER RESULTS If there was one consistent variable in Tech’s opening weekend, it would be that the Red Raiders have more balance on offense. The trio of Amanda Dowdy, Miara Cave, and Breeann David all had at least 10 kills each in both of the first two matches. In the process, Tech’s hitting percentage rose to a .256 average over three matches, including a .388 mark against UConn, the Red Raiders’ highest attacking percentage since defeating South Florida in three sets on Sept. 9, 2006. DAVID JOINS ELITE COMPANY Since the Red Raiders joined the Big 12 in 1996, no Tech freshman has begun her career with doubledigit kill figures in back-to-back matches. That is until Breeann David. The Denver City product finished with 11 kills against TCU and followed with 14 the following day against UConn. David finished with a .500 hitting percentage against UConn as she was 14-for-24 on the attack en route to posting Tech’s highest individual hitting percentage since Barbara Conceicao recorded a .526 average on Sept. 11, 2009 against Gonzaga. TCU INVITATIONAL NOTABLES u Texas Tech had not previously had three players with double-digit kills over the first two matches of a season since 2007. Amanda Dowdy, Miara Cave, and Breeann David all did so with the Red Raiders as the trio accounted for over 80 percent of Tech’s kills against TCU and UConn. u Texas Tech’s match against UConn marked its first against a Big East opponent since falling to Syracuse on Sept. 8, 2007. u Amanda Dowdy’s streak of 27-straight matches where she led the team in kills was snapped against Grambling State when Sam Podraza and Mikia Mills recorded eight kills each to pace the Red Raiders. Dowdy was pulled from the match following the first set against the Tigers. CAVE ACCURATE ON THE ATTACK After a spring and fall filled with high expectations, Miara Cave lived up to them through one weekend as the junior was third on the team in kills while posting a team-high .453 hitting percentage in the process. Cave finished with 30 kills on the weekend as she tied her career high with 15 kills against TCU. FRESHMAN GET VALUABLE TIME AT TCU One thing Don Flora wanted to see while at TCU was how his young team of mainly freshmen and sophomores would respond in a competitive atmosphere. After Tech easily defeated Grambling State in the opening set, Flora went with a lineup to start the second frame that consisted of all freshmen. Tory Vaughan was the only Red Raider junior or senior to

Dowdy was among the top offensive players in the conference a year ago en route to be selected to the All-Big 12 first team following the season. This marks the second-straight season Dowdy has been honored on the preseason and first as a unanimous selection. MEYERS ADDS EXPERIENCE AT SETTER With such a young roster, the Red Raiders will rely on senior setter Karlyn Meyers at the setter position. A two-year starter, Meyers is one of the mostaccomplished setters in school history as she is already among the top 10 all-time in career assists and assists per set average. RED RAIDERS WILL BE YOUNG Texas Tech will be one of the younger teams in the country as 15 of the program’s 21 players are

MATCH NOTES
RECORD WATCH: DOWDY CHASING SEVERAL MILESTONES IN 2011 Senior Amanda Dowdy will not only be looking to end her Texas Tech career off on a high note this year, but she will also be chasing several program records. The Lexington, Texas native entered the year fifth alltime in career kills and sixth in career attacks. Dowdy is only the eighth player in school history to reach 1,000 kills over a career as she has recorded 1,041 over three seasons. Dowdy also joined the top 10 last year on the single-season charts as her 424 kills ranked 10th alltime and her 1,286 attempts was sixth all-time. She also set the single-match record for kills a year ago as she finished with 37 against Colorado on Oct. 13 before nearing the feat again against the Buffaloes, listed as either a freshman or sophomore. Two of the squad’s six upperclassmen, juniors Ciara Gibson and Kelly Chiffer, will both redshirt this season, giving the Red Raiders only four upperclassmen on the court - seniors Amanda Dowdy and Karlyn Meyers and juniors Miara Cave and Tory Vaughan.

FLORA ADDS VETERAN ASSISTANT IN CORONEL One of the first things Don Flora said he wanted once he arrived at Texas Tech was to hire another proven assistant. He got his wish when Jojit Coronel compiled the Tech staff. Coronel, the head coach at George Washington the previous 10 seasons, joins fellow assistant Beth Falls and director of operations Amy Gandy.
RANGEL BACK IN ACTION AFTER INJURY Dravon Rangel will be back in action for the first time in almost a year this week as the redshirt sophomore missed almost all of last season with a knee injury. Rangel played in two matches of the seasonopening Rice Tournament before receiving a medical redshirt at the conclusion of the season. Rangel will be making her return nearly 15 minutes from her hometown of Grand Prairie.

CAVE PRIMED FOR STELLAR JUNIOR SEASON When asked who his most improved player was at the end of spring, Don Flora did not have to hesitate to say Miara Cave. Flora’s has described Cave’s spring as “going back to the basics” as the junior primarily worked on her footwork. The result has been a new-found confidence for Cave, who will be looking to improve on last season’s numbers where she was second on the team with 176 kills.
RED RAIDERS ADD SETTER TRANSFER, HRAGYIL Tech added depth to the setter position last spring as Nicole Hragyil became the first commitment of the Don Flora era, joining the program at midterm just in time to participate in spring drills. Hragyil adds depth for the Red Raiders as she will join Brandy Huskey as a backup to Karlyn Meyers. Both Hragyil and Huskey will also see time as a back row specialist.

VAUGHAN RETURNS TO LIBERO POSITION Tory Vaughan will return to the libero position this season for the first time since she was a freshman. The now-junior spent the 2010 as a defensive specialist, playing in all 29 matches while finishing fourth on the team with 147 digs. Vaughan played in all but two matches as a freshman, totaling 143 digs in the process, third-highest on the team.
GIBSON, CHIFFER SET TO REDSHIRT Texas Tech’s two junior transfers, Ciarra Gibson and Kelly Chiffer, will both redshirt this season, head coach Don Flora announced prior to the year. Gibson arrives at Tech following two seasons at Kentucky State while Chiffer previously played at Cypress College.
RED RAIDERS BOAST 12 NEWCOMERS Soon after his hire, Don Flora immediately hit the recruiting trail, traveling all over the country trying to build the Tech roster. The hard work paid off as the Red Raiders boast 12 newcomers to this year’s roster, including nine high school prospects. DAVID LOOKS TO FOLLOW FAMILY LEGACY Breeann David’s commitment to Texas Tech last spring not only gave the program one of the top recruits in the country, but it continued a family legacy. David’s mother, the former Megan McGuire, was a standout volleyball athlete for Tech in the 1980s while her father, Stan David, starred on the football team during the same time before be4

Missouri TECH PICKED TO FINISH NINTH IN BIG 12 PLAY The Red Raiders did not receive the preseason vote of confidence they hoped for as Tech was picked to finish last in the nine-team Big 12 Conference.
