RED RAIDERS SET TO OPEN HOME SLATE AFTER 15-GAME ROAD TRIP The Red Raiders open their home slate this weekend with the Texas Tech Invitational after spending the first three weekends of the season on the road. It is the third-straight season where Tech has been on the road for the first three weekends of its season as the Red Raiders played their first 16 games of 2012 and the first 15 contests in 2013 away from home. This is the first of two-straight home weekends for the Red Raiders, who will host the fourth-annual Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic on March 7-9, bringing in the likes of Northern Colorado, UT Arlington, Abilene Christian and Abilene Christian. ON THE HORIZON Texas Tech will return to the friendly confines of Rocky Johnson Field next weekend for the fourth-annual Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic. The Red Raiders open the three-day tournament March 7 against Abilene Christian before facing Northern Colorado, UT Arlington and New Mexico State over the course of the next two days. The tournament will end a 10-game homestand for Tech, its longest of the season. TEXAS TECH IN HOME OPENERS The Red Raiders head into this weekend’s Texas Tech Invitational opener against Sam Houston looking to build on their 12-6 record all-time in home openers. Tech enters its 2:30 p.m. first pitch with Sam Houston State having opened its home slate with a victory in each of the last four seasons, including an 18-0 rout of Jackson State a year ago. Tech’s last in a home opener came on March 10, 2009, when No. 9 Oklahoma arrived in Lubbock and swept a doubleheader to open Big 12 Conference play. The Red Raiders have never opened their home schedule with Sam Houston State previously as this will be the Bearkats first trip to Lubbock. INSIDE THE SERIES • Sam Houston State will make its first ever trip to Lubbock this weekend as the Red Raiders and Bearkats are facing each other for the second-straight season. Texas Tech split a two-game set with Sam Houston last year, falling, 4-0, in the round-robin portion of the Texas Shootout before coming back the following day with an 8-3 victory. Last season’s meeting marked the first between Tech and Sam Houston since 1997. The Bearkats control a 3-2 all-time advantage in the series. • Rhode Island will be the fourth first-time opponent for the Red Raiders this season as Texas Tech has previously faced Akron, Weber State and Creighton already this season. • Abilene Christian and Texas Tech will renew their series against each other this weekend for the first time since 1998 as ACU is currently in its first season as a Division-I opponent as part of the Southland Conference. The Red Raiders are 8-0 alltime against the Wildcats, including a 4-0 record in games played in Lubbock. NEWS & NOTES FROM AROUND THE DIAMOND • Texas Tech’s 10-5 start matches its record through the first 15 games from the 2013 season where the Red Raiders eventually ended the year 30-26 overall. • The Red Raiders are coming off their best weekend of the season as Texas Tech went 4-1 at the UTA Hilton Invitational with wins over the host Mavericks along with Creighton, UMKC and Illinois. Tech had previously gone 3-2 over the first two weekends of the season at the Lions Classic and Troy Cox Classic. • Of Texas Tech’s five losses this year, the Red Raiders have dropped four by two or less runs and three by just one run. Tech is currently 27-17 all-time under Shanon Hays in one-run games and 21-18 in two-run games. • The Texas Tech pitching staff enters this weekend with a 2.43 ERA, its lowest through the first 15 games of a season since 2010 when the Red Raiders recorded a 2.15 ERA to go along with a 14-1 record in the first season under Shanon Hays. • The Texas Tech pitching staff has recorded its lowest ERA with a balanced staff that features three Red Raiders - Gretchen Aucoin, Cara Custer and Brittany Talley - with at least 26 innings pitched so far this season. Tech is the only Big 12 program to boast a pitching staff with three members already tossing at least 26 innings this season. • Texas Tech is the only Big 12 program with two pitchers ranked in the top five of the conference in ERA entering this weekend as Gretchen Aucoin leads the league with a 0.43 ERA while Brittany Talley is fifth with a 1.30 ERA. • The Red Raiders have also found success at the plate despite a young roster that normally consists of four or five freshmen in the starting lineup. Texas Tech is hitting .309 on the year which ranks fourth currently in the Big 12. • Texas Tech is the only Big 12 program with three players ranked among the top-10 hitters in the conference for batting average as Cassie McClure ranks second with a .457 average while Sydni Emanuel is sixth at a .404 clip and Samantha Camello is 10th at a .382 average. • A year after breaking the school record for doubles, Texas Tech is once again one of the top teams in the Big 12 for the category as the Red Raiders have totaled a conference-leading 23 doubles through 15 games. Tech totaled 89 doubles in 2013 which broke the previous mark of 84 from the 2011 season. • The 2014 Texas Tech club has been among the most aggressive teams on the base paths during the Shanon Hays era as the Red Raiders have stolen 26 bases already this season which ranks second currently in the Big 12. It marks the most stolen bases for a Tech team under Hays through the first 15 games of a season. QUICK HOPS FOR THE RED RAIDERS • Gretchen Aucoin, coming off an impressive weekend in the circle, is the Big 12 leader in ERA entering the Texas Tech Invitational as she has posted 0.43 ERA through 32.2 innings. Aucoin allowed just one earned run over 19.0 innings last weekend at the UTA Hilton Invitational where she struck out 26 hitters, 17 of which that came Saturday in 10 total innings against both Illinois and Creighton. • Gretchen Aucoin recorded her Big 12-leading third save already this season last Friday afternoon against Creighton, moving her one shy of matching the Texas Tech single-season and career records in saves. Erin Crawford currently controls the single-season record with four saves during the 2006 season while Crawford (2003-06), Amanda Renfro (1998-01) and Jule Hauck (2004-06) share the career mark with six saves. • Like Aucoin, Brittany Talley has also been solid in the circle this season as the senior is 4-0 with a 1.30 ERA. It is Talley’s best start to a season since her 2011 freshman campaign where she opened the year 8-0 with a 2.36 ERA. • Sydni Emanuel enters this weekend riding a 12-game hitting streak that is the longest for a Red Raider since Adriana Perez hit safely in 14 games during the 2012 season. If Emanuel hits safely in all five games this weekend, it would be the longest hitting streak for a Red Raider since Elyssa Sigala and her school record 21-straight games in 2004. • In addition to her work reaching base, Sydni Emanuel is also among the Big 12 leaders in stolen bases as she ranks second with 11 so far this season. Brejae Washington of Texas leads the conference with 13 stolen bases while fellow Red Raider Lea Hopson is tied for fourth with 10 stolen bases. • Lea Hopson enters this weekend as the only Red Raider to reach base in all 15 games this season. Former Tech standouts Emily Bledsoe and Shelby Johnson reached base previously in the first 34 and 30 games during the 2013 and 2011 seasons. • Samantha Camello boasts the longest starting streak for a young Red Raider team as the sophomore has started in all 71 games of her Texas Tech career. Camello ranks 10th currently in the Big 12 with a .385 batting average. • Brittany Warnecke has been one of the most patient hitters at the plate this year for the Red Raiders as the freshman has totaled nine walks this year which ranks tied for fourth currently in the Big 12. • Cara Custer enters this weekend one win shy of moving into sole possession of third all-time at Texas Tech as she is tied with Erin Crawford (2003-06) currently with 42 career wins. Custer is 3-3 so far this season in eight appearances. • Cara Custer has a chance this weekend to become just the fifth Red Raider all-time to record 300 career strikeouts. Custer has totaled 298 strikeouts in her two-plus seasons at Tech which is tied for fifth currently with Sarah Losleben (2005-08).

2014 TEXAS TECH SOFTBALL AUCOIN RECORDS DOMINATING PERFORMANCE IN ARLINGTON Gretchen’s Aucoin 2-1 record last weekend in the UTA Hilton Invitational really doesn’t show how dominate the sophomore was in the circle. Aucoin appeared in four of Texas Tech’s five games on the weekend, tossing 19.0 total innings where she allowed just one earned run while striking out 26 hitters. In Saturday’s doubleheader against Illinois and Creighton, Aucoin combined for 10.0 innings, surrendering just two unearned runs off three hits. She started off the day with eight strikeouts in four innings of relief to pick up the extra-innings win over Illinois. She followed up by returning to the circle 30 minutes later to match her career high with nine strikeouts in a 1-0 loss to Creighton. Aucoin enters this weekend as the Big 12 leader with a 0.43 ERA as she has allowed just two earned runs in 32.1 innings this season. EMANUEL LEADING RED RAIDERS AT THE PLATE EARLY IN THE SEASON When Texas Tech head coach signed Sydni Emanuel, he knew he likely had a top of the lineup type hitter who would bring a different dynamic to the lineup. How quick she could make that impact was a factor he likely couldn’t determine. Through 15 games, though, Emanuel has likely exceeded expectations as she is sixth in the Big 12 Conference with a .404 batting average and among the league leaders in hits, total bases, walks and stolen bases. The Missouri City, Texas native has been a factor on the bases, swiping 11 bags while laying down four bunt singles and 11 infield hits, all team highs. TALLEY PITCHING STRONG DESPITE RUN SUPPORT What Brittany Talley has done through her first six starts of the 2014 season has been quite impressive. The left-hander is off to her best start to a season since her 2011 freshman campaign where she started 8-0 before suffering her first loss. Talley’s 4-0 record to this point is remarkable knowing the Red Raiders have scored only two runs in four of her six starts this season. Her run support increased during the UTA Hilton Invitational as Tech combined to score 11 runs in her two starts against Creighton and Illinois. Talley currently ranks fifth in the Big 12 with a 1.30 ERA as she has allowed just six earned runs in her 32.1 innings this season. OFF TO THE RACES Texas Tech’s ability to steal bases was on full display so far this season as the Red Raiders swiped 26 alone over 15 games. Sydni Emanuel leads all players with 11 stolen bases while Lea Hopson is a perfect 10-for-10 this season with six of those coming last weekend during the UTA Hilton Invitational. Tech enters this weekend ranked second in the Big 12 for stolen bases, trailing only Texas which has stolen 30 over 17 games this season. It is the most stolen bases through 15 games in a season in Shanon Hays’ tenure with the Red Raiders. TALLEY NAMED BIG 12 PITCHER OF THE WEEK AFTER DOMINATING OPENING WEEKEND Texas Tech senior left-hander Brittany Talley was named the Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Week this past Tuesday after her dominating performance at the Lions Classic. Talley powered Tech to its first win of the season with a two-hit, complete game shutout of Nicholls State on Friday night and then followed up by tossing 4.1 shutout innings two days later against Texas Southern. The Little Elm, Texas native was the only Big 12 pitcher with at least 10 innings pitched to not allow a single run, earned or unearned, last weekend. Talley also matched her career high with seven strikeouts against Nicholls State before finishing the weekend with 11 while holding opponents to just a .154 batting average. JUNIOR COLLEGE TRANSFERS PAYING OFF FOR RED RAIDERS Since Shanon Hays’ arrival at Texas Tech in 2010, the Red Raiders have found success with junior college players, recruiting the likes of Logan Hall, Adriana Perez, Raven Richardson among others. Through 10 games this season, Tech’s current class of junior college transfers have boosted the Red Raiders both offensively and defensively with Lea Hopson at second base, Kristi Belshe in left field and Kady Crow appearing behind the plate. Hopson, a College of Southern Idaho transfer, is tied for the Big 12 lead with four home runs in 10 games while hitting .400 with a team-leading 10 RBI. Belshe, meanwhile, hit .313 during the opening weekend before dropping her average down to .263 with a pair of doubles and eight RBI. Crow’s impact has been felt most defensively as she started behind the plate twice so far while driving in a RBI single for extra run support in Tech’s 2-0 victory over Nicholls State. Belshe and Hopson arrived at Tech after earning NJCAA All-American honors in 2013. #6THIS With almost a brand new roster and a slew of freshmen, it was quite understandable when Texas Tech was predicted to finish sixth in the Big 12 preseason poll. Well, it was understandable for everyone outside the Red Raider dugout as Tech quickly adopted the motto “6This” for the 2014 season. The motto should be a driving force for the Red Raiders, who after finishing 30-26 in 2013, will be looking to return to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the past five seasons. RED RAIDERS BOAST LARGEST FRESHMEN CLASS IN SCHOOL HISTORY In order to get back to the postseason, Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays will have to rely on the largest freshmen class in school history. The 11-member freshmen class breaks the previous school record of eight freshmen from both the 2004 and 2010 seasons. It is also the largest freshmen class in the Big 12 this season as Tech has four more freshmen then Texas and five more than Baylor, Kansas and Oklahoma State. The group will be expected to not just fill a few roles but make an impact early as Tech tries to replace all three positions in the outfield along with holes at first base and catcher as well. TEXAS TECH RANKS THIRD IN WINS UNDER HAYS Success has been no stranger to the Red Raiders under Shanon Hays. Under the Lubbock native, the Red Raiders have flourished, winning 151 games in four seasons which already makes Hays the winningest coach in program history. Texas Tech’s success during this stretch has lifted the program from the bottom of the Big 12 Conference standings as the Red Raiders are tied with Baylor as the third-winningest school the past four seasons. Tech is one of just three conference teams to record four straight 30-win seasons, joining the likes of Oklahoma and Texas. RED RAIDERS TO BE POWERED IN THE CIRCLE Texas Tech associate head coach Aly Sartini will have possibly the deepest and most experienced pitching staff of her tenure this season as the Red Raiders return a pair of veterans in senior Brittany Talley and junior Cara Custer along with experienced sophomore Gretchen Aucoin. The staff will get an added boost, though, from the emergence of junior Chandler Moore, who, according to Sartini, had the best fall of her collegiate career. The four returners represent 94 percent of Tech’s total innings from 2013 and 29 of the 30 victories from a year ago as well. They will be joined in the circle by freshman Cassie McClure, the reigning Texas 4A-5A Player of the Year, and redshirt freshman Mattison Maisel. HAYS AND OLD FRIEND REUNITE Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays will have a longtime friend along his side throughout the 2014 season as Greg “Emo” Evans joined the staff this past summer as an assistant coach. Evans, who previously spent nine seasons as the associate head baseball coach at Oklahoma State, will be responsible primarily for the Tech infield which, after setting the school record for fewest errors in 2012, struggled through portions of last season. Considered one of the top infield coaches nationally, Evans helped produce several of the top defenses in the country during his 25 seasons as a collegiate baseball coach. He will look to do the same in his first stint in softball as he inherits an infield scattered with freshmen but also with a pair of returnees in Samantha Camello and Sydnie Tapia. The Boyle, Miss. native coached Shanon Hays when he was first started his collegiate career as an assistant at Lubbock Christian. He would later move crosstown to Tech where he spent a total of nine seasons under longtime baseball coach Larry Hays, father of Shanon Hays. The Red Raiders experienced their most success in program history during that time with seven 40-win seasons and six trips to the NCAA Tournament. CAMELLO RETURNS UP THE MIDDLE AFTER STELLAR FRESHMAN SEASON Following an impressive debut in 2013, Samantha Camello will be looking for more of the same this season after hitting .311 while starting in all 56 games a year ago. The Temecula, Calif. native became only the sixth starting freshmen in school history to hit over .300 in her rookie campaign, joining the likes of Mikey Kenney (2010), Stephanie Drewry (2009), Ashley Parker (2004), Sandy Butler (1998) and Paula Workman (1997). Camello, who split time between shortstop and second base as a freshman, led a powerful Tech offense during Big 12 play with a .275 average while playing in one of the nation’s top pitching conferences. She will likely be Texas Tech’s opening day shortstop for the second-straight season. RED RAIDERS ADD PAIR OF NJCAA ALL-AMERICANS IN BELSHE, HOPSON Similar to years past, Texas Tech once again turned to the junior college level during the offseason to fill needs around the diamond, bringing in four transfers including two NJCAA All-Americans in Lea Hopson and Kristi Belshe. Hopson, who starred the past two seasons at College of Southern Idaho, was among the top junior college hitters around the country as she hit .431 in 2013 with 12 home runs and 46 RBI. Belshe, meanwhile, led the NJCAA with a .590 batting average in 2013 while playing for Lake Land College in Illinois. Belshe was also the national leader in hits (111) and on-base percentage as well (.645) while also ranking third in doubles (26), runs scored (94) and slugging percentage (1.005). The pair mark the seventh and eighth junior college All-Americans to sign with Tech under Shanon Hays. 2013 TEXAS TECH SOFTBALL NEWCOMERS Name POS YEAR Hometown Kaylyn Archuleta C Jr Alamagordo, N.M. Texas Tech is fortunate, though, to have two in senior Brittany Talley and junior Cara Custer. The two pitchers have worked the majority of innings for the Red Raiders the past two seasons and will continue to be mainstays in the circle yet again this season. Below is a look where both pitchers currently stand in the Tech career record book: CARA CUSTER, BRITTANY TALLEY IN THE TEXAS TECH RECORD BOOK Category Custer Ranking Talley Ranking Career ERA 4th 3rd Career Wins 4th T-5th Career Saves 5th 4th Career Games Started 5th 6th Career Complete Games 6th 8th Career Innings Pitched 5th 6th Career Appearances 7th 6th Career Strikeouts 6th 7th Career Strikeouts/7 inn. 5th 9th HAYS TO BECOME LONGEST TENURED COACH IN PROGRAM HISTORY Already the winningest coach in program history, Texas Tech skipper Shanon Hays will add another career achievement to his resume in 2014. The fifth-year head coach needs 28 games to catch Renee Luers-Gillespie for the longest-tenured Tech coach all-time as he enters the 2014 season having already led the Red Raiders in 227 contests over his four seasons, 28 shy of Gillespie’s 255 from 1996-2000. Hays is currently third all-time in the Tech record book as he also trails Bobby Reeves (2001-04) by eight games as well. He will pass Reeves on Feb. 15 against Weber State and then Gillespie on March 15 when the Red Raiders face Cal State Fullerton in the Titan Classic. 2014 TEXAS TECH SOFTBALL EVANS ONE OF TWO NEW FACES IN THE TECH DUGOUT THIS SEASON Greg Evans isn’t the only new face in the Texas Tech dugout this season as former Mississippi Valley State assistant coach Brooke Reed joined the program this fall as the new director of operations. Evans and Reed complete a staff that includes head coach Shanon Hays, associate head coach Aly Sartini and volunteer assistant Holley Gentsch, who was promoted from a graduate assistant position into a coaching role this season. Sandy Wellman, formerly James, will replace Gentsch as the program’s graduate assistant after completing her eligibility a year ago. POWELL & TALLEY DESTINED FOR SUCCESS OUTSIDE SOFTBALL One thing is certain after the 2014 season - Texas Tech will have a pair of seniors destined for success. The only two four-year seniors on the Tech roster, Brittany Talley and Taylor Powell are scheduled to receive their degrees this spring with Talley earning hers in chemical engineering while Powell will graduate as an animal sciences major. While highly successful on the diamond, the pair also sport two of the highest grade-point averages on the team. Talley, a native of Little Elm, Texas, enters this semester with a 3.8 GPA and has already accepted a position with Oxy, an international oil company. Powell, meanwhile, has registered a perfect 4.0 GPA entering her final semester and will look to attend veterinarian school following graduation. TEXAS TECH SET FOR 24 GAMES AT ROCKY JOHNSON FIELD Texas Tech fans will have plenty of opportunities to catch the Red Raiders at Rocky Johnson Field this year with 24 home games set for the 2014 season. After three weekends on the road to start the season, Tech opens its home slate Feb. 28 with a doubleheader against Sam Houston State and Southern as part of the Texas Tech Invitational, the first of two home tournaments for the Red Raiders. Tech will also host the fourth- annual Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic on March 7-9, bringing in the likes of UT Arlington, Northern Colorado, Abilene Christian and New Mexico State. Following a nearly weeklong trip to Southern California, Tech closes its non-conference slate with a March 19 doubleheader against North Texas and a three-game set March 21-23 with Texas State. The two series begin an eight-game homestand for the Red Raiders, who will open Big 12 Conference play March 28 at home against Baylor. Tech will also host Oklahoma State and Iowa State in a pair of three-game series this season at Rocky Johnson Field.
