The Red Raiders will face Prairie View A&M on Friday afternoon before wrapping the tournament against Louisiana-Lafayette and the host Mavericks on Saturday. TEXAS TECH OFF TO BEST START SINCE 2000 The Red Raiders enter this weekend’s tournament boasting a 9-1 record, marking the program’s best start since the 2000 squad opened the year 16-1 en route to a 24-9 record and trip to the NCAA Tournament. Tech is currently riding a nine-match winning streak, the school’s longest run since 1997 when the Red Raiders won nine-straight to open the season. THE SERIES u Friday’s match with Prairie View A&M will be the first in school history. u Louisiana-Lafayette and Tech will be playing for only the third time in school history with the Red Raiders already maintaining a 2-0 advantage in the series. The two schools last met on Sept. 19, 2008 when Tech opened the Spike Ike Tournament in Denton with a 3-0 victory over the Rajun Cajuns. u The Red Raiders will be renewing a longterm series with UT-Arlington as the two schools will be meeting for the 34th career time. Despite losing 10 of the last 12 meetings, UT-Arlington enters this weekend’s tournament finale with a 18-15 lead in the series that has only been played twice since 2008. This will be Tech’s first trip to UT-Arlington since falling, 3-0, to the Mavericks on Nov. 5, 1995.

MATCH NOTES LOOKING AHEAD The Red Raiders will remain in the Arlington area following the tournament in order to face North Texas at 7 p.m. Monday evening in Denton. The match is Tech’s last prior to opening Big 12 play next weekend against 12th-ranked Iowa State at the United Spirit Arena. NOTABLES u If Texas Tech were to defeat Prairie View A&M to extend its winning streak to 10-straight, which would be the longest run since the Red Raiders opened the 1996 season with a 15-0 record. u During Texas Tech’s nine-match winning streak, the Red Raiders have ended eight of those matches via a 3-0 sweep. The lone match to go an extra set was against Morehead State in the finale of the Texas Tech Invitational. u Texas Tech will be looking for its third tournament title of the season this weekend, a feat that has not been accomplished since the 2000 squad won all three tournaments for that year. u Texas Tech had not previously won two tournaments in a single-season since the 2006 season where the Red Raiders claimed both the UTPA and South Florida Invitationals. u Texas Tech’s nine wins on the season is two shy of its total from the 2008-10 seasons combined. It marks Tech’s most wins in a season since going 1217 in 2006. u The Red Raiders’ meeting with UT-Arlington will mark its fourth this year against schools from the Southland Conference. Tech has already defeated Central Arkansas, Southeastern Louisiana, and Northwestern State this season. u Texas Tech’s 3-0 homestand marked its best record at home to start a season since the 2004 squad opened the year with four-straight wins in Lubbock. u Texas Tech opponents are only hitting .069 against the Red Raiders on the year, the lowest average among Big 12 Conference schools. Only UConn has posted a hitting percentage above .200 against the Red Raiders this season. u The Red Raiders, meanwhile, have hit over .200 in eight of 10 matches this year with the exceptions being against TCU and Louisiana Tech. DAVID ADDS TO WEEKLY AWARD WINNERS Breeann David became the second Texas Tech player to earn a Big 12 weekly award this week as she was named the conference Rookie of the Week on Monday. David joins teammate Aubree Piper as a weekly award winner after Piper earned Defensive Player of the Week honors a week ago. It marked the first time in school history that two different players had been honored in the same season.
RED RAIDERS IN NCAA STATS After Tech’s successful start to the season, the Red Raiders have found themselves among the nation’s elite as the NCAA released its national statistic leaders this week. Here’s a look at where Tech ranks: u The Red Raiders enter this weekend ranked sixth in total team blocking as Tech is currently averaging 3.19 blocks per set. u Mikia Mills is 23rd in blocks per set as she is averaging 1.41 per frame, while Aubree Piper is 31st with a 1.35 average. u In the individual rankings, Amanda Dowdy ranks 50th in kills per set as the senior is averaging 4.03 per frame this year. u Miara Cave finds herself just outside the top 50 in hitting percentage as her .373 average is five hundredths of a point from being ranked. TEXAS TECH BOOSTS OFFENSE WITH SERVE One of Don Flora’s areas of improvement early in the season was Tech’s serving ability after the Red Raiders posted double-digit error numbers twice in their first three matches. Tech seemed to resolve the issue at the Louisiana Tech Invitational with 26 aces and only 13 service errors, its best ratio of the season. PIPER HONORED ON BIG 12 WEEKLY AWARDS Prior to Tuesday night’s match at Texas-Pan American, sophomore Aubree Piper was named the Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her performance during the Texas Tech Invitational. Piper finished with 21 blocks to go along with 15 kills on the weekend, matching her single-game highs for total blocks and block assists in the process. No Tech player had been previously honored with a Big 12 weekly award since Amanda Dowdy was named the conference Rookie of the Week on Sept. 15, 2008. FLORA STARTS TECH CAREER IN STYLE Of the eight head coaches in school history, only two have better records in their first seven matches than Don Flora. Donna Martin began her tenure in 1985 with a school-record nine-straight wins, while Nancy Todd won eight-straight to start her head coaching career in 2003. DOWDY CREEPING UP RECORD BOOK Through only seven matches, Amanda Dowdy has continued her trek up the school’s record book as the senior is currently third in career kills (1,162) and attempts (3,246). Melissa McGehee (1999-02) is second in both categories with 1,333 career kills and 3,368 attempts. MEYERS MOVING ON UP TOO Like Dowdy, Karlyn Meyers faces the possibility of moving up the school’s record book as the senior

MATCH NOTES
RECORD WATCH: DOWDY CHASING SEVERAL MILESTONES IN 2011 Senior Amanda Dowdy will not only be looking to end her Texas Tech career off on a high note this year, but she will also be chasing several program records. The Lexington, Texas native entered the year fifth alltime in career kills and sixth in career attacks. Dowdy is only the eighth player in school history to reach 1,000 kills over a career as she has recorded 1,041 over three seasons. Dowdy also joined the top 10 last year on the single-season charts as her 424 kills ranked 10th alltime and her 1,286 attempts was sixth all-time. She also set the single-match record for kills a year ago as she finished with 37 against Colorado on Oct. 13 before nearing the feat again against the Buffaloes, setter recently became just the eighth player in school history to reach 2,000 assists over a career. She enters this weekend trailing Mary Loescher (1985-87) for seventh all-time with 2,143 career assists, 198 shy of Loescher’s mark. DOWDY LEADS TRIO OF PLAYERS ON ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Amanda Dowdy was one of three Red Raiders named to the Texas Tech Invitational all-tournament team as the senior picked up most valuable player honors. Fellow senior Karlyn Meyers and junior Miara Cave were also honored as the Red Raiders claimed the tournament title following a 3-0 weekend. TEXAS TECH INVITATIONAL MARKS A FIRST The Red Raiders’ tournament win last weekend at the Texas Tech Invitational was the program’s first since it claimed the North Texas Tournament to start the 2008 season. Tech had also not won its own home tournament since 2004 when the Red Raiders defeated UTPA, UTEP, and North Texas as part of the Red Raider Classic. CAVE ACCURATE FROM THE RIGHT-SIDE Coming into the season, Don Flora knew he had a special talent in Miara Cave. His only question was would that translate into kills when the Red Raiders hit the floor. The junior has proved Flora right so far as she is second on the team in kills with 62 while her .373 hitting percentage is among the Big 12 leaders. The San Antonio native has hit .400 or higher in six of 10 matches this season. VAUGHAN SNAPS CAREER HIGH After already matching her career high for digs twice this season, Tory Vaughan broke the 20 dig milestone in the tournament finale against Morehead State as the junior finished with 21 digs in the match. Her previous high had been 13 which she originally set against Texas State in 2009. DOWDY, CAVE MAKE ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Texas Tech senior Amanda Dowdy and junior Miara Cave were both named to the TCU Invitational AllTournament team after leading the Red Raiders to a second-place showing.

this time finishing with 34 during the Nov. 20 match in Boulder. Here’s where Dowdy currently stands in career record book. CAREER KILLS Name 1. Kelly Johnson (2001-04) 2. Melissa McGehee (1999-02) 3. Amanda Dowdy (2008-Pres.) 4. Brande Brown (1994-97) 5. Christine Martin (1993-97)

CAREER ATTACK ATTEMPTS Name Attacks 1. Kelly Johnson (2001-04) 5,142 2. Melissa McGehee (1999-92) 3,368 3. Amanda Dowdy (2008-Pres.) 3,246 4. Cristine Martin (1993-97) 3,181 5. Sabrina Zenon (1988-91) 2,969 MORE BALANCE, BETTER RESULTS If there was one consistent variable in Tech’s opening weekend, it would be that the Red Raiders have more balance on offense. The trio of Amanda Dowdy, Miara Cave, and Breeann David all had at least 10 kills each in both of the first two matches. In the process, Tech’s hitting percentage rose to a .256 average over three matches, including a .388 mark against UConn, the Red Raiders’ highest attacking percentage since defeating South Florida in three sets on Sept. 9, 2006. DAVID JOINS ELITE COMPANY Since the Red Raiders joined the Big 12 in 1996, no Tech freshman has begun her career with doubledigit kill figures in back-to-back matches. That is until Breeann David. The Denver City product finished with 11 kills against TCU and followed with 14 the following day against UConn. David finished with a .500 hitting percentage against UConn as she was 14-for-24 on the attack en route to posting Tech’s highest individual hitting percentage since Barbara Conceicao recorded a .526 average on Sept. 11, 2009 against Gonzaga. FRESHMAN GET VALUABLE TIME AT TCU One thing Don Flora wanted to see while at TCU was how his young team of mainly freshmen and sophomores would respond in a competitive atmosphere. After Tech easily defeated Grambling State in the opening set, Flora went with a lineup to start the second frame that consisted of all freshmen. Tory Vaughan was the only Red Raider junior or senior to see action over the match’s final two sets as Tech played all 17 players that traveled that weekend. TCU INVITATIONAL NOTABLES u Texas Tech had not previously had three players with double-digit kills over the first two matches of a season since 2007. Amanda Dowdy, Miara Cave, and Breeann David all did so with the Red Raiders as the trio accounted for over 80 percent of Tech’s kills against TCU and UConn. u Texas Tech’s match against UConn marked its first against a Big East opponent since falling to Syracuse on Sept. 8, 2007. u Amanda Dowdy’s streak of 27-straight matches where she led the team in kills was snapped against Grambling State when Sam Podraza and Mikia Mills recorded eight kills each to pace the Red Raiders.

MATCH NOTES Dowdy was pulled from the match following the first set against the Tigers. DOWDY NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-BIG 12 Senior Amanda Dowdy was recognized prior to the season as Tech’s only selection on the Preseason All-Big 12 team. Dowdy was among the top offensive players in the conference a year ago en route to be selected to the All-Big 12 first team following the season. This marks the second-straight season Dowdy has been honored on the preseason and first as a unanimous selection. MEYERS ADDS EXPERIENCE AT SETTER With such a young roster, the Red Raiders will rely on senior setter Karlyn Meyers at the setter position. A two-year starter, Meyers is one of the mostaccomplished setters in school history as she is already among the top 10 all-time in career assists and assists per set average. RED RAIDERS WILL BE YOUNG Texas Tech will be one of the younger teams in the country as 15 of the program’s 21 players are listed as either a freshman or sophomore. Two of the squad’s six upperclassmen, juniors Ciara Gibson and Kelly Chiffer, will both redshirt this season, giving the Red Raiders only four upperclassmen on the court - seniors Amanda Dowdy and Karlyn Meyers and juniors Miara Cave and Tory Vaughan. FLORA ADDS VETERAN ASSISTANT IN CORONEL One of the first things Don Flora said he wanted once he arrived at Texas Tech was to hire another proven assistant. He got his wish when Jojit Coronel compiled the Tech staff. Coronel, the head coach at George Washington the previous 10 seasons, joins fellow assistant Beth Falls and director of operations Amy Gandy. CAVE PRIMED FOR STELLAR JUNIOR SEASON When asked who his most improved player was at the end of spring, Don Flora did not have to hesitate to say Miara Cave. Flora’s has described Cave’s spring as “going back to the basics” as the junior primarily worked on her footwork. The result has been a new-found confidence for Cave, who will be looking to improve on last season’s numbers where she was second on the team with 176 kills.
ing drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the 1984 NFL Draft. Both her mother and aunt, Susan Kelly McGuire, are still among the top 10 in school history of every blocking category. David’s older sister, Leah David, is also the team’s student manager. RANGEL BACK IN ACTION AFTER INJURY Dravon Rangel will be back in action for the first time in almost a year this week as the redshirt sophomore missed almost all of last season with a knee injury. Rangel played in two matches of the seasonopening Rice Tournament before receiving a medical redshirt at the conclusion of the season. Rangel will be making her return nearly 15 minutes from her hometown of Grand Prairie. RED RAIDERS ADD SETTER TRANSFER, HRAGYIL Tech added depth to the setter position last spring as Nicole Hragyil became the first commitment of the Don Flora era, joining the program at midterm just in time to participate in spring drills. Hragyil adds depth for the Red Raiders as she will join Brandy Huskey as a backup to Karlyn Meyers. Both Hragyil and Huskey will also see time as a back row specialist. TECH PICKED TO FINISH NINTH IN BIG 12 PLAY The Red Raiders did not receive the preseason vote of confidence they hoped for as Tech was picked to finish last in the nine-team Big 12 Conference.
