African Industries Ripe for Disruption 16

July 2018

|TD

First movers are not always at an advantage. This could be for many reasons including lack of infrastructure and talent, funding to keep the lights on for long enough before attaining break-even, and even the market not just being ready for such a product or services. We’ve seen the first, second, and even third coming for some business models in Africa as well as numerous attempts to disrupt certain industries. At long last, things are beginning to line up for certain industries that are now ripe for technological disruption. Why now? Credit goes to a few things including a rise in mobile and internet penetration on the continent, an increasing appetite by consumers, not to mention the many lessons from previous entrants that now help entrepreneurs to fine tune their business models and product offerings. These 5 African industries are ready to be disrupted:

Travel

Tourism is increasingly becoming one of Africa’s significant contributor to GDP. According to the 2017 World Travel & Tourism Council report, we’re looking at a total contribution $108.0bn (7.1% of GDP) in 2016, with a forecast to rise by 3.4% in 2017, and to rise by 4.8% per annum to $178.5bn (7.3% of GDP) in 2027. While it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking all of these only comes from export, there is a growing trend of locals looking to explore other parts of Africa - from neighbouring cities, to countries and then further out. Technology has also made it more convenient more than ever for travel suppliers and consumers to showcase and find products and services including ticket purchase, customized or tailored packages, visa advisory, and even credit facilities to reduce the burden of purchase. The mobile phone, internet and social media are also enabling entrepreneurs develop business models; recipes for entrepreneurs further disrupt how travel is supplied, consumed, and managed.

Education

What we learn, how we learn, and where we learn is changing and with this comes opportunities for technology entrepreneurs to disrupt this industry. With innovation, 3 main areas to be looking at include Distance Learning Higher Education, Supplementary Education, and Publishing. According to Statista, these have a Sub-Saharan Africa market size of $250Mn, $200Mn, and $30Mn respectively in 2017. Why focus on these 3 segments? Virtual learning is increasingly becoming popular due to its affordability and convenience. Beni American University, Nigeria’s first online university, offers 4-12 week courses for $100 $300. This removes a lot of barriers to learning but there is so much more to unlock in this niche especially when it comes to Supplementary Education which is now spans from primary level to executive level of education. Mobile devices and apps are quickly replacing books and titles with smartphones and tablets becoming cheaper and adopted by educators.

Media

First came print with newspapers and magazine, then came radio, followed closely by the television, and the internet happened and opened up an industry that now has the likes of BuzzFeed, Gimlet, and Netflix. These are global leaders in online print, audio, and video content and unlike many maps that has the African content as dark spot, Netflix has Africa lighting up and Nigeria among other African countries are now regular features on BuzzFeed.

You may say but all of these are VC funded companies which are hard to compete with. After all, local players such as Multichoice are not smiling. Well, you don’t have to go head-to-head with Netflix to disrupt the media industries. You can focus on other value propositions such as discovery, and content sourcing or venture into spaces not yet occupied - we’ve got OMGVoice and Zikoko vying for being Africa’s BuzzFeed and iROKO stands as Africa’s Netflix, we are yet to have our own Gimlet; Vibeoo comes close but no one wears the crown for now.

Food and Agriculture

In the previous edition of TechDrum, an interview with the CTO of Agritech startup, Farmcrowdy showed the role of technology in disrupting agriculture. However, the buck does not stop there as the farm is only one small albeit important part of the value chain for this essential industry. While technology now enables people with capital to sponsor farms, thereby providing capital for farmers, there are other part of the value chain that is ready for disruption. This includes, but is not limited to, processing, storage, distribution, packaging, education, and preservation. Now that’s only on the agricultural side of the coin as there is a vast amount of opportunities for technology entrepreneurs on the food side of things including culinary discovery, niche online takeaway and even subscription services. There are also interesting problems which can be overturned to opportunities such as food waste and perhaps how to redistribute food in an efficient manner.

Financial Services

No need to bore you with statistics on the number of unbanked and underbanked Africans, but if you’re curious, it’s about 75% of the adult population. But then again 40% of these say they don’t need one so perhaps the opportunity does not lie in providing people with bank accounts but simply giving them access to financial services including savings, investments, and credit. Other blockers to access to financial services, include lack of trust, and necessary documentation, and cost, all of which presents an opportunity for entrepreneurs to present new ways of introducing transparency, ease of use, and affordable or even zero-cost services; exploring other ways of monetization. First we had Interswitch and mPesa, and then Paystack, Paga and Flutterwave, but we’d need to see more Cowrywise, Piggybank and Paylater type of technology startups launching and building traction in the coming years.

THE EVOLUTION OF SMARTPHONES WHEN APPLE AND BLACKBERRY WERE ONCE FRUITS.

I

n the early 90s, if someone ever made a remark of any sort, about humans using a phone that could perform basic conversation with computing task while one could record videos and snap photos like we have today, I bet he’ll be labelled a joke and then to make it worse, he probably named them Apple or Blackberry. Pretty sure he’s going to get thrown out of the pub for excessive drinking and thrash talking if not beaten up. But here we are today, Apple and Blackberry are different from apple and blackberry in every way.

Pre-millennium Era

All we had was just a telephone device; you know the type with massive buttons and unnecessarily huge keypads, huge handles with wire connection flying around the wall of the office or house as the case may be. Then when we had the rotary dial telephone – a luxury at the time. And in no time came “modern” telephones with push buttons – no offense to old times.

Post-millennium Era

We are being introduced to the advancement mobile telephony could afford and as it unfolds, we are wowed by the creativity, simplicity, design, and product competitiveness invested along the way. We are literally carrying in our hands, pockets, and backpacks, highly complex and sophisticated electronic devices which our lives depend on. We use them to do virtually everything from communicating to driving, writing, videos, gaming, banking and a host of other things. 18

I once saw a video of a kid given a new iPhone to unbox, only to open and found out it was empty. He was filled with rage and utmost disgust for been played by the parent. And here I was just laughing my ass out. Years ago, if someone came with an apple as a gift, I know how happy I would be. I would know it was an apple before collecting it because there wouldn’t be a need for unboxing. The poor kid didn’t see it coming I guess. Most kids nowadays would prefer Apple to apple, you can try and find out for yourself too, pretty sure you will be shocked by your discovery. Before the start of the millennium, apple and blackberry were just fruits to billions of people around the world and was quite cheap as well. You could literally walk into any grocery store and come out with a basket full of these fruits; well, health tips say they are good for the body – Yes. Today, you might need to enter an Apple store to purchase their latest iPhone X with at least $999, that’s a lot if it were to be an apple while a new Blackberry KEY2 will cost you $649. Apple unveiled its first mobile phone which called iPhone in 2007 by the then CEO Steve Jobs, a product he described as “a revolutionary and magical product that is literally five years ahead of any other mobile phone”. Blackberry was already ruling the market at the time Apple came in with others. In the last quarter of 2008, Apple recorded a 4.7million in sales which is a 13% of the smartphone market share while Blackberry’s Research in Motion had 15%.

Apple soon became a necessity for communication and other purposes alongside Android while Blackberry remained in the market even though the demand for their products began to dwindle when other platforms came in big with something (large screen) different from what Blackberry had. The demand for Apple and other devices had increased massively even though along the line, Blackberry fell out of the market with 207900 units sold, claiming (0.0%) market share with Android and Apple’s IOS leading the bunch according to Gartner report for the last quarter of 2016. Not too long ago, Blackberry announced that it will no longer produce its own devices but would outsource the production to an Indonesian telecom company while maintaining the Blackberry brand. The company has turned its attention to software, a moved which saw its share jump to 4% after the announcement was made. Blackberry once had a hold on the mobile phone market, it was once a wonderful choice of mobile telephone for Wall Street traders, celebrities, politicians and also used in movies, but now the story has changed. It has been replaced by mobile platforms who aren’t scared of making a change, something Blackberry was scared of doing. Apple is still doing it big while Blackberry is trying to reinvent itself and so also is apple and blackberry. We have these four products at our disposal and to be frank we can afford any of these. And for those who can’t afford the iPhone X like myself, let’s us all stick to that apple which will be of benefit

to our health. There is no crime in that. When was the last time you ate an apple or blackberry? – serious talk now. You need to do something about it. We already know that mobile phones have evolved from merely a telephone device to a “virtual assistant”. It contains our life, everything about us and the society we find ourselves. So, we no longer have apple and blackberry only as fruits, we also have them as virtual assistants. Apple, apple, Blackberry, and blackberry will be here for a long time hopefully, at least we all know two of those will be here till the end of the world. So, enjoy what they all have to offer.

BUILDING A MINIMALIST SMART HOME: What you need to have.

I

f you’re only just starting to build your smart home, you’d be forgiven at balking at the price. Some of the latest and greatest connected home tech can be eye-wateringly expensive, but luckily there are plenty of cheap smart bulbs, connected cameras, smart speakers and other devices out there. As the smart home has matured, prices have dropped, and there are much cheaper alternatives for many types of products. Now, the likes of Nest, Philips Hue and the like are still pretty expensive, and similarly, there’s plenty of white-label dross floating around on Amazon.

02

02

We haven’t had chance to test out Wyze Cam yet, but it’s one of those products that seems to defy logic. Designed by former Amazon employees, it’s a 1080p smart home camera, with motion detection, night vision and free What we’ve tried to highlight, however, is some bargain access to your recorded clips. smart home tech from decent brands. We’ve tested most of this The Wyze Cam is just $19.99 stuff, and it gets our thumbs up. It might not be the best, but it’s – US only right now – and the good for the price. Let’s get our bargain hunting hats on and go company has just launched an shopping. updated version, still at the same price. The only thing to be wary of is a truly basement level 10fps recording, but if you’re looking to take your first step with a home camera, it offers staggering value.

Google Assistant $49.99, store.google.com

The Google Assistant equivalent to the Echo Dot is the Google Home Mini, which one-ups its rivals in terms of looks. The mesh covered speaker comes in a range of funky colours, including coral and pale grey, and certainly looks the part. Google Assistant is a great ecosystem, and the Chromecast tie-in works nicely, plus the Google Home Mini will work as a Bluetooth speaker as well. Like the Echo Dot, Google also isn’t shy about slashing the price even further on the regular. The one downside, considering the notgreat audio quality, is that there’s no audio out, which does let the ensemble down for music listening, somewhat. 20

05 TP-Link HS100 $24.99, tp-link.com | Amazon

The original Ring Video Doorbell is still going strong, and you can bag a first generation model for around $99. You still get to see who’s at your door, and access two-way audio, but the video feed is only in 720p – which let’s admit it, is absolutely fine for a doorbell.

From the range of smart plugs we’ve tested, the TP-Link HS100 represents some of the lowest priced options from the familiar names out there. The HS100 has recently been updated, so there’s plenty of deals around on Amazon, and you should be able to bag a plug for around $24.99. It’s pretty no-frills stuff (it’s a plug), but you get smartphone control without a hub, and it plays nicely with both Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

08

$99, ring.com | Amazon

06

Lifx is one of our favourite smart bulbs. Lifx eschews any of the in vogue smart bulb standards such as Zigbee or Z-Wave in favour of good old Wi-Fi, and it actually works. There’s no hubs or mess, each bulb just installs and falls under the spell of the Lifx app – and after that Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, Nest and IFTTT. It’s a compatibility grand slam. But what about the price? You can pick up a simple Lifx white bulb for less than $25, and it’s $20 for the multi-colour version.

Roost PP3 $34.99, getroost.com | Amazon

Smart smoke alarms are pretty pricey, but Roost offers the chance to smarten up your home on the cheap. It’s a smart battery, which fits into old smoke detectors, but will ping your phone if the alarm sounds. It’s a bit of a retrofit fudge and it doesn’t require the certificates and rigorous testing smoke alarms do, due to it piggybacking on tested systems – but you can make three smoke alarms smart for the price of one Nest Protect.

Xiaomi Mi Robot $344, gearbest.com | Amazon

Robot vacuums aren’t cheap, in fact, the likes of Dyson and Roomba can cost upwards of $800. So forgive us the addition of the Xiaomi Mi Robot at $334 – hardly budget, but in the grand scheme of things, quite the bargain. It aced our testing, navigating our home – traps and all – with aplomb. There are a few hurdles to overcome – the app is in Chinese for starters and getting new parts (filters and brushes etc) might be tough, but the value is unrivalled. A fantastic buy for smart home bargain hunters.

Google Chromecast Ultra $69, store.google.com

The Chromecast Ultra is a brilliant 4K streaming option for Netflix subscribers and YouTube addicts – and the best thing is it’s just $69. It’s a top alternative to the Apple TV 4K, which is double the price, and can tap into tonnes of Ultra HD content via YouTube, free of charge. It also plays nicely with Google Home, so you can control your TV with your voice, too. TD|
