EDITOR'S NOTE

nd once again we find ourselves in Taipei for Computex 2013. The not-so-old adage of Go Big or Go Home seems apt for ASUS, and more often than not has gone big here in its own backyard. The company saves its best for what is generally seen as the last major IT shindig for the year. In recent years, the original Zenbook ultrabook, the PadFone, and the Zenbook Prime all made their maiden bows at Computex. For those of you who’ve seen ASUS’s Computex 2013 teaser video, we now know that their theme this time round is We Transform. And they’re doing just that with the introduction of the Transformer Book Trio – the world’s first three-in-one notebook, tablet, and desktop PC. Yes, you read right, you get a notebook that has a detachable standalone tablet, leaving behind a PC Station base that works as a PC once plugged into an external display. There’s also the Zenbook Infinity, except this time its sleek metal finish has been replaced by glass. Now before you start imagining a reflective mirror-like ultrabook, the Zenbook Infinity retains the original concentric circle finish, and reflects a metal-like finish under lights. It is also the world’s first 28-watt ultrabook and uses the latest Intel i7 processor. They seem to be transforming the way we view the digital world as well, with the All-in-One PC ET2702 and the PA279Q ProArt display going beyond Full HD with WQHD 2560 × 1440 resolution. And there’s also a small matter of the ASUS PQ321 – the world’s first True 4K UHD display. I’d go on about what else they have on display at the ASUS booth, but you can read about the new ASUS Transformer and MeMO Pads, as well as the G10 desktop and VivoMouse in the pages to come. And if you happen to be in Taipei, do swing by at booth M810, Nangang Exhibition Hall, Taipei World Trade Center.

Transforming computing ASUS Transformer Book Trio
ASUS Transformer Book Trio gives us a Windows 8 notebook and PC, along with an Android tablet, all at the same time
S
ome time back I had the privilege of walking the hallowed halls of ASUS Design in Taipei and had a chance to speak one of the designers of the ASUS Transformer Book range. He summed up the need for a Windows 8 tablet and notebook hybrid as such: Modern life moves quickly and we need to adapt constantly to our environment and tasks. That’s why we need devices that can intuitively and seamlessly switch from one mode to the other. This time round, they’ve taken the concept found in the ASUS Transformer AiO all-in-one PC and applied it to the Transformer Book range. What we have here today is the ASUS Transformer Book Trio – the world’s first 3-in-1, 11.6-inch notebook and tablet hybrid with a fully functional PC Station. The ASUS Transformer Book Trio is essentially a dual OS, dual CPU notebook with a detachable Full HD IPS tablet. On top of that, an external monitor can be hooked up to the PC Station – itself a standalone CPU – to become a desktop PC. The Android tablet comes with a 1.6GHz Intel® Atom™ processor; while the Windows 8-based PC Station can be spec’d up to a 4th generation

Intel® Core™ i7 processor for productive computing. The 11.6-inch, 16:9 aspect ratio IPS display showcases stunning visuals in Full HD 1920 × 1080; with a 10-point multitouch function available as an option. As the world’s first dual OS notebook, the ASUS Transformer Book Trio can easily switch between Android and Windows 8 modes, giving you access to over 700,000 apps on the Android ecosystem and over 50,000 entertainment apps for Windows 8. Despite the disparity in operating systems, you can still easily sync files, photos, videos and even emails. You can continue to surf the webpage you’re on even when you switch from Windows 8 notebook mode to Android tablet. In terms of storage, the Windows 8 keyboard base features up to a 750GB HDD; while the tablet can have up to 64GB of eMMC storage. Away from the electricity mains, power comes by way of Li-Polymer 19.5WH battery in the tablet, and a 33WH Li-Polymer battery in the PC Station. That is good enough for up to 6 hours on Windows 8; and 15 hours on Android. When docked, the battery in the PC Station helps to recharge the tablet.

I
t’s been a while since we’ve been treated to an ASUS Transformer tablet, but it is back with a vengeance here at Computex 2013. Ladies and gentlemen, what we have here today is the New ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity. The Android 4.2 Jelly Bean-equipped New ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity is the first in its family to feature the 1.9Ghz NVIDIA Tegra 4 Processor with Quad-core ARM Cortex A15 CPU and 72 Core GeForce GPU. With firepower like that, there’s no doubt that it’ll raise tablet performance benchmarks just that little bit higher. Those who were impressed with the HD visuals found on previous ASUS Transformer Pads will be blown away with what the New ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity brings to the party. It features a 10.1-inch LED backlit, 178-degree wide view angle, IPS+ display to deliver vivid visuals in all their WQXGA 2560 × 1600 glory. Accurate and responsive onscreen control happens through the capacitive touch panel with 10-finger multitouch; while SonicMaster-enhanced audio is on

hand to complete a fully-immersive mobile gaming and entertainment experience. If that’s not enough for you, ASUS Miracast streaming lets you play games on your TV; or stream movies and YouTube videos through DLNA technology. There is also a 5-megapixel, f/2.4 aperture rear-facing camera with autofocus and a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera. ASUS Camera 3.0 has no shutter lag and lets you shoot stills while recording 1080p videos; there’s also an option to shoot HDR images and “Beautification” photo editing features. It’s not an ASUS Transformer if it doesn’t do what it says on the box so the New ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity comes with a redesigned 254mm Qwerty chiclet keyboard dock that now features a multitouch pad, USB 3.0 for a mouse or game controller, as well as an SDXC card reader. A 36-pin connection aids in charging as well as syncing data with a PC. A 19Wh Li-polymer battery built into the pad adds an extra 3.5 hours to the New ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity’s already impressive 10-hour battery life.

Portable Wireless Storage
Measuring 140 × 90 × 25.5mm, the ASUS Wireless Duo Wi-Fi HDD looks just like any other portable hard drive, but that’s where the similarities end. Designed as an external storage device for smartphones and tablets, the Wireless Duo allows users to stream and share media files or access stored documents wirelessly. You needn’t worry about compatibility either - it works with different operating systems, with an app for iOS, Android and Kindle Fire. It also works with the web browser in your Windows phone. Wireless Duo can connect with up to five devices at any time. Available with 500GB or 1TB capacities, the Wireless Duo provides up to 30 times the storage capacity of smartphones and tablets. There’s USB 3.0 for fast data transfers and also a built-in SD Card reader (compatible with SDHC and SDXC) with a one-click backup option, making it ideal for travelers looking to store and share their pictures. june June 2013

Raise a glass to the future of Zenbook
ASUS Zenbook Infinity
We sneak a peek at the ASUS Zenbook Infinity
T
he Zen-inspired concentric circle finish found on the ASUS Zenbook Ultrabook™ has etched its way onto the company’s design ethos, with products like the ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity and ASUS PadFone™ sporting similar spun metal lines. That tradition continues with the ASUS Zenbook Infinity, except that this latest rehash of the original is the world’s first 28-watt Ultrabook™ and uses the latest Corning® Gorilla® Glass 3. Zenbook Infinity retains the concentric circle and Zen-like essence of the original, but when viewed under lights, reflects a light blue steel hue. The Zenbook Infinity has a thickness of 15.5mm and is 14% thinner than its predecessors. It’s lighter and tougher too, with Corning®’s Native Damage Resistance™ (NDR) improving its ability to withstand the daily knocks and bumps all too familiar with today’s notebooks. As we all know, smooth glassy surfaces are a magnet for fingerprint smudges, but ASUS anticipated this and uses an automotive industry-grade fluorine compound coating to protect the Zenbook Infinity’s finish. ASUS has been tight-lipped about what the Zenbook Infinity would deliver in terms of tech specs, but here’s what we’re sure of – it sports the latest 4th generation Intel® Core™ i7 processor for powerful, yet energy efficient performance.

ASUS Fonepad™ Note FHD 6
The joy of six We call upon the ASUS Fonepad™ Note FHD 6
I
t may be a tad smaller than its predecessor, but the ASUS Fonepad™ Note FHD 6 is a step up from the original ASUS Fonepad™. For the uninitiated, it’s a tablet with 3G smartphone functionality as its name suggests. And that “6” stands for 6-inches – finally, a tablet that can fit within the confines of a coat’s inside pocket. While “Note” explains the presence of a stylus, which when combined with the abundance of apps available in the Android ecosystem and the bundled ASUS software, provides you with numerous ways to interact with the Fonepad™ Note 6. Available in black or white, the Fonepad™ Note FHD 6 packs an Intel® Atom™ Z2560 processor(1.6GHz). With that kind of muscle paired with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, ASUS is pushing the Fonepad™ Note FHD 6 as a truly mobile entertainment platform, and bestowed upon it a Full HD 1920 × 1080 Super IPS+ TFT display with a 178-degree wide viewing angle. It has ASUS Splendid™ color enhancements and promises crystal clear visuals thanks to a more accurate color range. A brightness rating of 450 nits ensures that you can see what’s onscreen even when using the Fonepad™ Note 6 outdoors under bright sunshine.
A 1.2 megapixel front-facing camera lets you make high quality video calls, while an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera has the capacity to record videos in 1080p. There’s also a MicroSD card slot that can support up to 64GB of additional storage space. Dual microphones provide echo cancellation and excellent audio pickup for more distinct voice calls. And of course, there’s two front speakers with ASUS SonicMaster technology and Maxx Audio Wizard to guarantee optimized high definition audio.

ASUS 8 Series Motherboard
Z new gold standard
The new Intel Z87-based ASUS motherboards come calling with a host of new features
I
t’s great that ASUS readied an armada of motherboards based on the Intel Z87 chipset for 4th generation Core processors, boasting a classy gold colour scheme. These boards cover all your needs, from compact home theatre entertainment to hardcore gaming and competitive overclocking. Even better they brought friends: lots of innovative features that enhance experiences. If you’re planning a new PC for Z87, do not miss out.
Time for a tap
Near field communication, or NFC, is a cool technology that makes it easy for devices to talk to each other wirelessly with instant detection, and ASUS has NFC Express bundled with the Z87-Deluxe/Dual motherboard. It’s also sold separately and compatible with all ASUS Z87 offerings, consisting of an external accessory box and an NFC tag. Touch the tag or any NFC-compatible Android device to the accessory box, and they become paired with NFC Express. Easily transfer videos and photos between your desktop and paired devices, use a smartphone to remotely control your PC, and assign quick-launch

shortcuts to the NFC tag and compatible devices, so favorite apps open faster. You can even setup passwordfree login to Windows 8: tap NFC Express, the operating system loads up, and you’re in.
Mythical durability
The ASUS TUF Series continues to live up to its moniker in the Z87 era. The ATX Sabertooth Z87 and mATX Gryphon Z87 deliver military-grade TUF components and advanced thermal technology for superior reliability and cooling. They give you upgraded features like Thermal Armor with two flow valves to meet the needs of air and liquid cooling configurations, plus the Thermal Radar 2 smart temperature detection interface. You also have TUF Fortifier, a sturdy metal backplate that reinforces motherboards against harmful bending, so you can install even the mightiest (and heaviest) graphics cards and CPU coolers without risking damage to circuitry. The result: longer-lasting motherboards. Sabertooth Z87 comes with Thermal Armor and TUF Fortifier by default. They can be added to the compact and more affordable Gryphon Z87 as part of the TUF Armor kit, which upgrades Gryphon and also includes Dust Defender enclosures that protect expansion slots and connectors against debris build-up.
Grab advanced overclocking
ROG charges ahead with more innovation. Behold OC Panel, bundled with the Maximus VI Extreme, the latest world-record setter from the Republic of Gamers. OC Panel is a flexible pro-grade system tuning console that you can use as an internal or external device. Fitting any 5.25-inch bay, OC Panel slides into PC cases to work in Normal Mode, where it offers info covering parameters like CPU speed presets, temperatures, ratios, base clocks, and CPU fan performance. One-click CPU Level Up with two speed presets gives you instant system boosts, so power comes easy. Outside the case, OC Panel transitions into Extreme Mode for the really dedicated. It’s here you go into deep hardware-level overclocking functions like super-low temperature monitoring with Subzero Sense, VGA Hotwire overvolting, community-demanded Slow Mode and Pause Switch, plus four extra fan headers. All system tuning is done via convenient front panel buttons. For anyone keen on exploring Z87 potential, OC Panel is a must.
All forms factored in
ATX and mATX boards aren’t the only ones getting the full Z87 treatment from ASUS. The mini-ITX segment is just as important, and ASUS gives us the Z87I-Deluxe, a small form factor board packed to the hilt with awesome capabilities that place it on par with the performance of ATX boards. It supports high-end 4K video and works great as a home theatre centre or portable shuttle gaming PC. Smart board layout makes the most of available space for effortless component fitting. Ample clearance means no more struggling with full-size coolers, and a special slot tab makes graphics card install and removal a breeze. For expandability, six SATA 6Gb/s ports come in handy, as do four fan headers, so Z87IDeluxe is ready for water-cooling. That’s much more than traditional mini-ITX boards offer, but add an 802.11ac Wi-Fi module and hefty 12-phase power delivery, and it becomes apparent ASUS made the Z87I-Deluxe as versatile as its bigger siblings. Remember, this is just a sampling of what’s available. Head over to ASUS.com for even more Z87 goodness.

Those processors hide behind a 27-inch, 178° wide view angle, 10-point capacitive touch IPS panel with a native resolution 2560 × 1440 WQHD resolution. With four times the pixel density of 720p displays WQHD gives you greater image detail and a larger onscreen real estate to work on. If that’s not enough, there’s support for four external displays through HDMI and the Intel® Thunderbolt outputs. The latter provides unmatched performance – providing up to 10Gbps transfer speeds in either direction; as well as support for both data and video through a single connection. You can use the ET2702 as an external display for your
notebook as well through ASUS Device Share technology. Similarly, hook your ET2702 up to another Windows 8 PC to share features like the camera, touch panel, and keyboard and mouse. The ET2702 comes with ASUS SonicMaster Premium – a combination of hardware and software designed to deliver improved audio quality, a wider sound range, and true-to-life surround sound. An optional SonicMaster subwoofer designed by the ASUS Golden Ear team has a 580cc resonance chamber for deep, rich bass. The ET2702 also has Ai Charger II that lets you quick charge USB devices even with the PC is off. Similarly, the PA279Q ProArt Series WQHD LCD Monitor is a professional 27-inch display that is factory pre-calibrated for unmatched color accuracy (∆E<2) and outstanding color space reproduction — 99% Adobe Wide Gamut RGB, 100% sRGB and 120% NTSC. The PA279Q has an AH-IPS (Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching) display which provides a 178° wide view angle and native 2560 × 1440 resolution with 109 pixels per inch (PPI). The PA279Q provides you with 77% more on-screen work area and up to 25% sharper images than generic 27-inch Full HD displays.
The ASUS PA279Q has DisplayPort, HDMI and duallink DVI-D ports, and can display content from two video inputs simultaneously. Picture-in-picture mode displays content from a second input in a window in one corner of the screen, while picture-by-picture mode splits the screen down the middle to display content from two separate sources side-by-side. DisplayPort lets you daisy chain up to three monitors for a multi-display workstation. There’s also a six-port USB 3.0 hub, with one port with SuperSpeed Battery Charge for faster smartphone and tablet recharging; as well as a multi-format memory SD card slot. It also features two built-in 3W stereo speakers. Targeted at design professionals, the PA279Q has ASUS QuickFit Virtual Scale for actual-size previews of images and documents, 100,000,000:1 ASUS Smart Contrast Ratio for enhanced image contrast, and independent six-axis color adjustment for precise color control without affecting other hues. The PA279Q sits on a versatile stand with full tilt, swivel, pivot and height adjustment; and is VESA wall mount-compliant. There is also a monitor hood attachment that shields the display from bright ambient light for even greater color accuracy during calibration.
