In this picture I am tandem paragliding at Wilderness beach on the Garden Route. Running down a hill with limited runway, gliding out to sea, returning just covering tree tops and landing on the beach is quite the experience. I would recommend this to anyone. LETTERS: DEAR RETREAT

Dear Retreat, The Editor,
On a recent trip to the Pilansberg we came across two bull elephants about to cross the road. Keeping a safe distance we waited and watched, but the Range Rover behind us passed and stopped in the path of the oncoming elephants. The photo tells the story; but we watched as the elephant ran his trunk up and down the vehicle, just hoping that the elephant would not flip the Range Rover. While this seemed awfully exciting to the occupants, it was a potentially dangerous situation and should serve as a warning to all tourists that animals in the wild need their space, and incidents like this can very easily lead to tragic circumstances. What should have been a treat turned into a retreat. Frikkie Oosthuizen
Retreat is a great mag and nogal for free. It contains so much useful information at your fingertips for quick break-aways. Keep it up! This picture is from a recent trip to Zanzibar. The name ‘ZANZIBAR’ sounds and is exotic. We always wanted to go there and eventually did. This on-the-spur-of-the-moment breakaway never disappointed from beginning to end. Zanzibar is a fantastic laid-back part of our beautiful continent with friendly, helpful people everywhere. This please-photograph-me setting presented itself early one morning and it was very hard to say no. This hand-made boat (catamaran) was parked on the beach early morning during low tide on the eastern coast of Zanzibar (in the Warm Mozambican current). In the background, the plot beacons (little stumps sticking out of the water) are clearly visible. The locals each have a small plot where they plant their seaweed for overseas perfume markets. For at least three to four hours each morning, the village women plant the seaweed. The plots extends to almost 1 kilometre into the sea at low tide. By about 9am the water starts pushing up covering the whole area and this fairy tale landscape disappears, only to reemerge at low tide the next day. It was a fascinating breakaway adventure and a wonderful retreat.

Hi Retreat, I work with orphans and vulnerable children, and one day we took them out to Gold Reef city. They were very happy, they saw something that they’ve never seen before. They even thought that they were not around SA anymore. It was greatly appreciated by everyone and it really warms our hearts to see their smiling faces. So this picture is always in mind and I smile every time when look at it. Precious Ndlovu
Hi Retreat, Why do holidaymakers from Gauteng want to rush down to the Cape? There is so much to see just by detouring slightly off the N1, especially in the Karoo. On a recent trip we took a comfortable, relaxing 3 days to do the journey and really enjoyed being slightly off the beaten track. Here is just one of the memories, this spotless church in Hanover, Karoo. Try it, it’s worth it! Bill Duncombe

Getting to know
the Garden Route
GETTING TO KNOW THE GARDEN ROUTE
The famous Garden Route in the Western Cape is heralded as one of the most beau ful and scenic tourist des na ons on the planet. The area also plays host to a huge number of fauna and flora with nearly 300 species of birds living in the wetlands that dot this tranquil landscape. Ten nature reserves help protect the ecology of the area while unique marine reserves safeguard coral reefs, seals, dolphins and the endangered southern right whale, which uses secluded bays in the area as nursing grounds for their young. The Garden Route is without a doubt a tourists dream, so Retreat decided to trek through the most popular spots on this majestic route.
Mossel Bay
osselbay (with its current 150 000 inhabitants), is like the rest of the towns on the Garden Route, is studded with history. The town is particularly important because it marked the first meeting place between European explorers and natives of Southern Africa, in this case, the Khoi San. On the 3rd of February 1488 Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias arrived in the bay, proving that it was possible to sail around the southern tip of Africa. Here he met the nomadic Khoi San people in a peaceful encounter, with both parties willing to trade goods. Subsequent explorers used the bay as a halfway station in the days before the Cape colony had been founded. A prominent milkwood tree served as a primitive post office after Pedro de Ataide used it in 1500 to leave an important letter in a shoe under the tree. From then on letters would be left in a shoe beneath the tree to be picked up by later ships. The ancient tree is still standing today and has been declared a national monument, although you are unlikely to find 500-year old letters from Portuguese ship captains stuffed in shoes there these days. The tree does boast a post box shaped as a shoe though, recalling its old courier roots. Cage diving adventures are becoming an increasingly popular adventure holiday choice for those who want to experience the thrill of staring into the eyes of a great white

shark. White Shark Africa operates a cage diving company in Mossel Bay and takes visitors out in a 11.5 metre motor catamaran custom built for shark cage diving which can hold eighteen people per trip and six divers at a time in the diving cage. For those inclined to enjoy slightly safer activities, the Garden Route Casino in Mossel Bay will cater to all your gaming needs. With 412 slot machines, 16 gaming tables and an all new Texas Hold’em Poker table, the Garden Route Casino Hotel & Spa offers world class luxury combined with Garden Route hospitality.
George
he peaceful seaside city of George serves as the administrative and commercial hub of the Garden Route. This gives the city, situated about halfway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, a central feel while encapsulating the amazing fauna and flora found in this unique part of the world. Visitors will find a ton of interesting curio shops and old school deli’s in the city. Incidentally, George is also the sixth oldest town in South Africa, and those with an eye for Edwardian architecture can visit the King Edward VII library for a close-up appreciation of this beautiful old building. Those wishing to enjoy a more intimate relaxing

experience can go exploring via the Outeniqua Country Hop Route. This beautiful route takes visitors down the endlessly snaking R404 as they explore the strawberry and herb farms in the area, go on cheese tasting or candle making courses or enjoy the dairy farms, horse riding and mountain biking. The area also caters to both the amateur and pro golfer with its beautiful expansive golf estates such as the Oubaai Golf Estate and the famous Fancourt. Anyone who has visited the town before can attest to the beautiful and abundant wealth of flowers that the area is known for. The red George lily (Cyrtanthus elatus), which is only found in the Southern Cape, can be found here, even featuring on the George municipal logo.
Oudtshoorn nother wonderful town to visit on your way through the Garden Route is Oudtshoorn. Steeped in just as much history as George, this scenic town has become the heart of the Klein Karoo. Oudtshoorn became known as the ostrich farming capital of the world after commercial farming started during the late 1880’s, signalling the emergence of an entire new industry. At the time the fashion demand for ostrich feathers across Europe was great, with the Oudtshoorn district quickly distinguished itself as the prime source for the sought after feathers. Ostrich feathers was actually such a valuable commodity that it ranked as South Africa’s fourth largest export during the first decade of the 20th century, topped only by gold, diamonds and wool. This huge demand allowed ostrich farmers to construct gorgeous sandstone mansions as their homesteads, of which many are still standing today. One of the most impressive of these is the Ostrich palace “Welgeluk”, built during the feather boom of 1910. The homestead is now a National Monument and provides great insight into the architecture and affluence of a long forgotten period. In addition the the area’s remarkable ostrich legacy, the town is also well known as the location of the spectacular

Cango Caves, known worldwide for its majestic rock formations. The caves are situated only 29 km from the town, so there’s really no excuse to miss out on visiting the only show cave in Africa if you haven’t already. Tours through the caves are conducted every day of the year except on Christmas and tours are available every hour on the hour from 09:00 to 16:00 daily. If you decide to head to the area early in April you can also catch the KKNK festival (Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees), taking place in the town. This colourful attraction always turns into the highlight of the year for many show goers, so timing your trip to coincide with it may not be such a bad idea. The Cango Wildlife Ranch is the destination of choice when visiting Oudtshoorn, if you’re in the mood for an encounter closer to the wild side. The ranch is the oldest and largest cheetah contact centre in the world and visitors can experience intimate encounters with cheetah, tiger cubs and even slithering reptiles. Visitors can also enjoy the unique crocodile cage dives, available to visitors 12 years and older, where you’ll be able to get up close and personal with the giant Nile crocodile.
Knysna nysna is one of the best-known jewels of the garden route, featuring lush indigenous forests, rare wildlife, fantastic lagoons and some of the most stunning scenery you’re likely to come across in your travels. The town of Knysna was first established in 1882 and is a veritable paradise town. Classified as a protected marine reserve the Knysna lagoon is a wonderful place to visit on its own, sporting beautiful vistas, over 200 species of fish and the elusive and extraordinary sea horses it’s famous for. Knysna is also well known for its forests, with many a South African high school student learning of its mysteries and adventures through Dalene Matthee’s Circles in a Forest (Kringe in die bos). Today only three elephants are reported to still be roaming

the forests, with the Knysna Elephant Park planning to bring back elephants to the area, usually former orphans rescued from culling operations in the Kruger National Park. The forest is also touted as the largest complex of closedcanopy forest in Southern Africa, making it a truly unique experience to visit. The area’s rich Fynbos vegetation contributes more than 8000 plant species to the Garden Route’s already rich collection. If you’re in the mood for a relaxing cruise, the Knysna Paddle Cruiser offers visitors a unique aquatic dining experience on the tranquil waters of the Knysna Lagoon. The first Paddle Cruiser to be built in the country, it is also the last one operating today, making the experience that much more precious as well as historic. The Paddle Cruiser offers delicious meals enjoyed at lunch time or in the evening where visitors can enjoy some Knysna delicacies such as locally brewed beer, fresh fish and Knysna oysters as well as some Mediterranean treats. The Paddle Cruiser has been rated as a 4-star restaurant by the SA Tourism Grading Council, the only floating restaurant in the country to have received this honour.
Plettenberg Bay lettenberg Bay, nicknamed Plett, is another town worth visiting on the Garden Route tour. The town sports a population of around 30 000 people, still comfortably qualifying as a quiet coastal retreat. The town is mostly built around a steep slope heading down towards the sea, meaning great views abound, no matter where in Plett you might find yourself. One of the most unique attractions of the Plett area is the Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary. This amazing reserve is the world’s only multi-species, free roaming primate sanctuary and offers visitors unique up close and personal interactions with these animals in their natural habitat. The centre currently houses 15 different species of primates including rare species such as the ringtail lemur, spectacle langur and black and golden howler monkeys.
P
RETREAT 5
The Birds of Eden sanctuary also forms part of Monkeyland and is the world’s largest free-flight bird aviary. In short, a ton of magical animal experiences await visitors to the area. For a more traditional African safari experience, visitors can head to the Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve, the biggest game reserve in the Southern Cape covering more than 2200 hectares. The reserve is situated just 12 km from the town and with its superb accommodation facilities it makes the perfect stop for a day visit or extended stay. The reserve is home to four of the big five namely buffalo, lion, leopard and rhino, and hosts more than 30 other species including giraffe, hippo, crocodiles as well as a large variety of antelope and bird species. Fynbos, grasslands and indigenous forests lends a rich collection of flora to the reserve as well. Visitors can embark on a two hour game drive or opt to meet nature face-to-face on a guided horseback safari. If going out onto the water is more your style, Ocean Blue is an excellent whale and dolphin watching tour operator located in Plettenberg Bay. What differentiates Ocean Blue from some other operators is that it is a licensed SABBWWA permit holder meaning it can approach whales from 50 metres instead of the normal 300 metre limit. If the whales decide to move closer they also do not need to pull their boats back, meaning guests can experience some of the most intimate whale watching experiences available in the world. In the winter visitors can expect to see southern right as well as humpback whales while the summer months will see bottlenose, common and the rare humpback dolphins frolicking in the offshore waters. All-in-all, Plettenberg Bay, just like the rest of the towns on the Garden Route makes for a rewarding and enjoyable holiday experience, no matter where you come from or what you’re looking for, the sheer variety of attractions in the area is astounding. The Farm Inn Pretoria
The Farm Inn has been an institution in Pretoria for more than 25 years. Retreat went for a long overdue visit. ong before golf estates and shopping centres dotted up in the area, The Farm Inn lodge was a landmark out on Lynnwood Drive in Pretoria East. For 25 years it has provided quite the unique visit, for where else would you be able to see cheetahs, white lion and tigers just after you’ve been treated to a superb buffet?
L
Amazing buffet Retreat’s visit to The Farm Inn took place on a mild Sunday afternoon and we arrived just before the buffet opened. A number of people were already there, quietly relaxing on the green lawns, sipping drinks and generally making the most of the serene gardens. When the Letaba room opened for lunch we were surprised at the sheer size of the buffet. According to the executive chef at The Farm Inn, Ferdie Uitenweerde, guests are treated to 35 main dishes and 15 puddings, with plans to expand this in future. The amount of food makes it difficult to decide where to start – the fish plate or the cheese plate? Maybe the roasts (beef, RETREAT 5
pork, lamb) or should we move directly to the puddings? As expected the beef roast was delicious, but we especially took a liking to the Springbok venison, the mouthwatering lamb casserole and the magnificent mussels. During the week the Tugela a-la-carte restaurant is open, known for its fantastic African cuisine and it has also recently been awarded a Platinum Diners Club Wine list Award. Game drives After this feast Retreat climbed aboard for a game drive round the 72 ha estate. Despite the fact that a number of estates now surround the farm you still get a feeling of being in the bush. We quickly spotted giraffe, springbok and gazelle, but the main attraction is of course the big cats. The Farm Inn is one of only a handful of places where you can see not only cheetah and leopard, but also both world famous white lions and white tigers. Accommodation, wedding & conferences The Farm Inn’s strong African theme is also present in their 84 bedrooms with thatched roofs and stone walls. These are not only popular with international tourists but also with visitors looking for a www.retreatmag.co.za
break-away from the city, but without driving too far. Conferences at The Farm Inn are also popular due to its convenient location, 12 conference rooms and a number of corporate conferencing options. With two Bomas available to cater to quests and with lion roaring in the background, what better way is there to end a wonderful day? The Farm Inn is also firmly established in the wedding industry for a long time and with a choice of 13 different venues and two charming chapels, excellent South African cuisine and a central location, it’s easy to see why it’s an indemand venue. Conclusion The Farm Inn offers a truly amazing African experience in the east of Pretoria. Whether you come visit for the buffet on a Sunday, a game drive with the opportunity to see white lions and tigers, or the wonderful accommodation and a-la-carte restaurant, The Farm Inn will leave you satisfied and wanting more. Silver Streams Modimolle
ilver Streams, situated only about 10 km outside Modimolle (Nylstroom) and about an hour and a half from Pretoria, has managed to combine high class design without losing the African touch of its surrounds. The architecture, best described by Executive Manager JP Joubert as “Modern African”, is complimented by the fact that all units overlook the small dam providing not only a relaxing view but also a lovely setting for a perfect bushveld sunset. When we arrived at Silver Streams, the Retreat team was greeted by the full complement of staff, bidding us welcome with lovely cocktails. This set the tone for the rest of our stay where we were treated to first class service, high end accommodation and superb dining.
S
Wild Olive Restaurant We turned up just in time for sundowners in the swimming pool on the patio deck overlooking Silver Stream’s dam. Experiencing a serene bushveld sunset remains a privileged experience and we were soon beckoned to what would turn out to be a cuisine treat at the Wild Olive restaurant. The well14
appointed chefs at Silver Streams spoiled us to a delicious display of fusion cooking in what is known in the Wild Olive as an “Experience Meal”. This is a five course meal served with different wines to complement each course. Each of the courses was accompanied by the chef describing what flavours to look out for in the dish and expanding on the choice of wine. This was indeed a treat for the palette. One of the starters for example was delightful baby peppers stuffed with cream cheese and smoked pork’s neck complimented by a fantastic homemade sweet chili sauce. It sounds rich and it is, but the dish is accompanied by asparagus in a honey and balsamic vinegar reduction and a mouthful of the Cape Tranquility Pinotage/Shiraz blend, rendering it just perfect. Some of the other mouthwatering courses included a beer and butternut soup as well as butterflied prawns served with Cape Hake gently fried in Italian herbs and lemon butter, completed with an olive and sundried tomato risotto. The Wild Olive is open to the public for dinner, while the restaurant can also accommodate visitors during the daytime for either breakfast, lunch or a relaxing high tea experience. www.retreatmag.co.za
Accommodation With 17 suites able to sleep 34 people per night, the lodge is spacious enough without losing intimacy. Retreat was pleasantly surprised by the interiors of the air-conditioned suites we spent the evening in. Modernly decorated without being garish, it contains all the modcons which made for fantastic stay – in fact we wished we could have stayed longer since we did not have enough time to relax in the spa bath (ideal for unwinding after indulging at the Wild Olive) or enjoying the gas fireplace, heated towel rails, flat screen TV and other fine furnishings. We woke up the morning not even realising the day is dawning thanks to the double thick curtains and after a quiet coffee on the patio overlooking the dam, we took our fly-fishing gear to try our luck on the bass that roam the dam. Lady Luck smiled more on the bass than on our whimsical wishes, so we retreated for another coffee and a relaxing outdoor shower just before a welcome breakfast on the main patio. We can say that Silver Streams is one of the highest class venues Retreat has ever experienced and it’s difficult to choose which we enjoyed more – the modern accommodation or the dining at RETREAT 5
TOP SA RETREATS
Silver Streams’ Wild Olive restaurant. Let’s just say they complement each other in a big way. Other activities Other activities to partake in include game drives (giraffe, eland, zebras, gazelle, etc), canoeing, informal cooking classes, walking trails and spa treatments. Silver Streams is also located close to Shingwedzi cheetah and wild dog sanctuary and the Thaba Kwenya crocodile farm, while two 18 hole golf courses should keep golfers happy. Apart from being a luxurious weekend breakaway, Silver Streams also serves as an amazing wedding venue, being able to cater for small weddings or up to 150 people. There is no set wedding package, with the lodge rather willing to work with the couple for a more individual approach to the big day. Conference facilities are also available with packages catering for businesses using Silver Streams as a day venue or those looking to book delegates in for the night. The venue can host from 17 to 30 people with morning tea and snacks, light lunch and of course afternoon tea provided. Additional activities, such as game drives or wine RETREAT 5
tasting, can be arranged, while dining at the Wild Olive restaurant can be a welcome closure to a day’s worth of intense conferencing. Companies requiring larger facilities can look at the larger Waterberg Convention Centre (www.waterbergconventioncentre.co.za) which belongs to the same group as Silver Streams. It can accommodate up to 120 people and is situated in Modimolle. Conclusion Retreat’s stay at Silver Streams was an experience provided by not only top class modern accommodation but also wonderful staff and an excellent dining experience at the Wild Olive. It all fused perfectly to result in one of our most enjoyable stays yet. We also think they offer good value for money at R1400 per couple per night (R700 pp sharing or R800 pppn single), including dinner (but not the Experience Meal) and breakfast. BIG TREK GPS ROUND-UP Before you take the big trek down to the coast this holiday, check out these hot new GPS units. TomTom GO 1000
Navigon 40 Premium
Garmin nüvi 1410
Nokia Ovi maps
omTom has been out and about this year releasing several new products onto the hotly contested in-car GPS market. The company’s latest offering, the GO 1000 LIVE, introduces a string of new functionalities. One of the most flaunted new features on the device is its capacitive Fluid Touch screen. With this new technology drivers can pinch to zoom in and out of maps or scroll through menus with the tips of their fingers. A new Easy Click magnetic mount takes the chore out of docking as the GPS now simply glides into place. TomTom LIVE services are also available with the device including speed camera warnings, local search with Google, weather forecasts and most importantly live traffic updates. It retails for R3999 with one year free LIVE services included.
T
he Navigon 40 Premium was hands down the best GPS device from Navigon we tested this year. This 4.3" device sports the updated One Click Menu while and Point of Interest (POI) interface also impressed, with interactive POI’s strewn across the display, showing the names and addresses of POI’s with the tap of a finger. The device is also equipped with Bluetooth technology for hands-free calling, supporting up to two phones and storing phonebook entries on the device itself. We were also suitably informed of the traffic situation with live updates provided to the GPS via a RDS-TMC FM radio system. No subscriptions or registrations are needed, and the traffic system worked well. The Navigon 40 Premium retails for a recommended R2199.
T
he Garmin nüvi 1410 is one of the latest GPS solutions from Garmin. Although general navigation worked well, we weren’t too impressed with the touchscreen on this model, being glitchy a number of times. Additional features fared better however and these include ecoRoute functionality which calculates the most fuel efficient routes, as well as a trip log function to track where you’ve been. Bluetooth technology and a built-in microphone and speaker also makes an appearance for convenient hands-free calling. As an optional extra users can purchase the GTM 25 traffic receiver which enables the device to receive live traffic updates through FM radio waves as you drive. The 1410 retails for R3000
W
When using GPS functionalities on your smartphone, you have to remember that for one it’s going to be taxing on the battery life and secondly, the data charges when downloading maps might start getting uncomfortable, depending on how often you
use it. Some makes’ local maps are not that good, while others provide you with a limited usage license. With a stand-alone in-car unit there is no battery worries and additional charges are an optional affair. These devices have also been specifically designed for
navigation so they will often sport much more advanced features in addition to generally having larger and clearer touch-screens. At the office we prefer made-forpurpose GPS units, while smartphones are reserved for in-case-of-emergency moments. [JK]

e all like to know where we’re going, but not everyone can afford to buy an additional device in the form of an in-car GPS. Luckily users of Nokia smartphones can gain access to a free navigation service straight from their phone in the form of Nokia Ovi maps. The surprisingly effective Ovi maps can be used almost like an in-car GPS, giving you turn-by-turn voice and visual guidance supported in over 75 countries. This includes lane assistance, speed limit warnings and real-time traffic information. Nokia Ovi maps is pre-installed on new Nokia smartphones.

ROAD SAFETY
Ge ng there,
safely... ince the December holiday season is upon us, it’s good to remember that it’s not necessarily arriving in time that matters, but rather arriving alive. Here are some valuable road safety tips.
S
Buckle up First off, the most important road safety rule in the book is to always buckle up before setting off. Many South Africans have been a bit slow to adopt this rule of thumb, but increased police presence is slowly changing this.
Kids in the back Secondly, if you have any infants or young children travelling with you, the safest place they can be is in a child safety seat in the back. Research data have shown that child safety seats reduce the risk of death in car crashs by 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers aged one to four. Also remember that passengers in the back seat should by law wear a safety belt. Plan ahead Getting lost is very seldom a fun experience, and even though there are some excellent GPS devices available, no technology is fool-proof. Therefore, in addition to your GPS, we suggest always taking an up-to-date roadmap with you, just in case. Always ensure you know what route you’re going to take, simply telling the GPS to take you down to Richards Bay may have some
unforeseen consequences. The device might decide to take the “shortest route”, which in South Africa might very possibly be a game trail in the middle of nowhere. Therefore, always check that you know where you’re going. Take a break Getting an adequate amount of rest is also very important when going on extended drives. It’s recommended that drivers stop to rest at least every 200 kilometres or after two hours of driving. Also please take care to stop at a filling station or other roadside establishment, since stopping at the side of the road can be dangerous. While your driving skills might be good, it does not necessarily ring true for other roadusers – thus drive with anticipation of what other drivers on the road might do. Most importantly, enjoy your holiday. [JK]

DRIVE: REVIEW
Volvo S60 hands-on
The sexy all-new Volvo S60 olvo has always been a safe bet as far as cars are concerned. With a reputation of being safe, reliable, and elegant but not over-the-top in the style department, the cars have gained a bit of an “old man’s” car reputation. The Swedish manufacturer is aiming to bring an end to this though with its sleek new line of vehicles and its “Naughty Volvo” campaign.
V
Design The all-new Volvo S60 ushers in a welcome change from the previous iteration, with sweeping new lines, a revised roofline and attractive new LED lights creating a much more visually appealing vehicle. The design also emphasises the low slung powerful stance one likes to associate with high performance sedans. The all-new Volvo S60 brags with much sportier looks, reminiscent of the new Volvo C30 hatch, while offering more rounded and casual exterior design. This sporty feel really works for the car as one glance simply makes you want to get in and drive, drive, drive. Performance Volvo has put a lot of time into making sure the all-new Volvo S60 is not only a safe and good looking car, but also the most dynamic model the company has presented to date. Buyers have a choice between two chassis, a sports or a comfort-orientated setup, so you can truly make the Volvo S60 work for you. Prospective buyers also have a myriad of options at their disposal when it comes to derivatives in the form of two petrol and two diesel versions with a further four derivatives planned to be introduced at a later stage. At the top of the petrol ladder is the powerful T6, equipped with a 3.0 litre in-line six-cylinder engine sporting 224 kW and 440 Nm of torque available for some apex hugging performance. Following in its dust will be the 2.0T developing 149 kW with 300 Nm of torque. Leading the diesel stable is the RETREAT 5
2.4 litre D5 which produces a hefty 151 kW and a maximum torque of 420 Nm. These will be followed by the introduction of the 2.0 litre T5 as well as the frugal 1.6 litre T4 and T3 models. A pair of diesels will also be joining the party in the form of the 2.0 litre D3 and the very economic 1.6 Drive. During a recently launch event held in Pretoria we had the opportunity to get a close up look at three of the new models, the T6, D5 and 2.0T as well as taking the 2.0T out for a spin. We’re happy to say that the all-new Volvo S60 performed admirably. Granted we didn’t get to spend an awful lot of time in the car, but we managed to slip the rest of the convoy on the way back to the venue to sneakily take the Volvo S60 on a little gander of our own. Straight line performance was impressive, and it’s clear that Volvo has captured a bit of the magic that seems to keep modern sedans roaring forever. We didn’t encounter any problems through the bends either as the Volvo S60 swiftly responded to the slightest input from the wheel, not once even getting an inkling that the car was out of its comfort zone. This is thanks to a slew of electronic refinement systems found on the car, with Volvo claiming it as the first sedan to be outfitted with Advanced Stability Control. Equipped as it is with an advanced roll angle sensor, the system can identify any skidding tendencies early on to allow the Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) system to take over when it detects a problem. To help drivers from losing their precious new investment on the side of the road the Volvo S60’s inner wheel is braked during cornering at the same time as power is transmitted to the outer wheel, enabling wannabe racers to take that corner more tightly without worrying too much about understeer. Safety Although Volvo has paid a lot of www.retreatmag.co.za
attention to the car’s performance, that doesn’t mean it isn’t one of the safest cars on the road at the moment, since it is. Sporting advanced safety features such as a pedestrian-sensing braking system, blind-spot assist, lane departure warning, a full complement of airbags, ABS and EBD and the radarassisted braking system first introduced in the Volvo XC60 SUV, you’ll feel safer in the all-new Volvo S60 than if you had Chuck Norris as a bodyguard. Interior As soon as one gets into the Volvo S60 you’re met with a feeling of quality and refinement. In everything from the general layout to the stitching on the seats, it’s clear that Volvo put a lot of effort into creating a posh interior environment which drivers aren’t likely to tire of. The console features large, clear dials and gauges with the centre console slightly tilted to the driver’s side for extra visibility. The three spoke steering wheel is covered in leather with satellite controls for audio functionality on the fly while handsome leather coverings also adorn the gear knob and upholstery. Electronic Climate Control also helped to keep us cool and comfortable in the sweltering South African heat. Conclusion In the brief time we got to spend driving and experiencing the all-new Volvo S60, the car definitely impressed. It’s clear that Volvo is moving in a new direction, appealing to the sportier or “naughty” side of its cars as opposed to its traditional leanings. The Volvo S60 seems to be the perfect contender for an everyday car and as a comfortable holiday cruiser. The Masque of Africa: Glimpses of African Belief
Facing up
by VS Naipaul, Pan MacMillian (2010)
by Bear Grylls, Pan MacMillian (2001)
T
ount Everest is one of the toughest climbs in the world. Not a guess, just a well known fact. Another well known mountain climbing fact is that youth does not matter but experience determines everything. With this in mind, a young and inexperienced Bear Grylls, just two years after breaking his back in a freefall parachuting accident, climbed to the summit of Mount Everest. The book takes us on an emotional and entertaining journey from the recurring dreams of the parachuting accident in Africa, to the climb of Mount Everest. Bear recalls events spurred on by the diary he kept on the climb for the summit and the title of youngest Briton to conquer Everest. On the read you will choke up at the sad memories, laugh at the good times and be utterly amazed at the end. The book follows Bear as he fights off illness, still present back pain from the accident, face harsh weather conditions, fatigue and dehydration. The book will force respect for the monster which is Everest and will make people think thrice about taking the tough climb for granted. R95. Bear Grylls is today a well known survivalist and adventurer and can be followed on his crazy trips to Antarctica, Amazon and Africa where he puts himself against nature on DStv’s Discovery Channel in the show Ultimate Survival with Bear Grylls. [CM]
Book give-away
Retreat has two copies of each title to give away to lucky readers.
he Masque of Africa is more than a beautifully written travel novel; it is an attempt to understand the religions in Africa. The narrative follows VS Naipaul as he journeys through the unknown territories of Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria, the Ivory Coast, Gabon and South Africa. For Naipaul, who won a Nobel Prize for literature in 2001, travelling in search of religion becomes an intellectual journey. And although he is highly sceptical in his search, there are moments when he allows himself to be filled with wonder as he looks upon the majestic places of worship. It is especially in these moments that the true brilliance of the author shines through. He speaks to believers of Islam, Christianity and traditional African beliefs to examine the position of religion in Africa and how these beliefs helped to shape and hamper the continent. This lovehate relationship is an ongoing theme in the novel. And throughout the novel one thing becomes clearer and clearer; African religion is a melting pot of ideas, beliefs and people. In order to fully appreciate its complexity you need to submerge yourself into Naipaul’s ambitious novel. R190 [MW]

Fun, fun, fun in the sun this summer There is an old idiom that states that, “You can’t have too much of a good thing.” This certainly rings true for a lot of things within the South African context such as biltong, beating the All Blacks and that hallowed local tradition known as the braai. ut for others too much of a good thing can literally be quite bad for you, such as lengthy exposure to the hot South African sun. Overexposure to the sun, especially, during the summer time, can lead to a selection of adverse effects, ranging from bad sunburn through to skin cancer.
B
Dangers of overexposure to the sun Sunburn is the most common danger and causes the skin to turn red, painful and sometimes even swollen. In severe cases sunburn also causes blisters and the afflicted person may get a fever. Exposure to the brightness of the sun may also set off migraines and headaches, which may last for around a day. Constant exposure to the sun over a long period may also cause undesirable changes in the skin such as RETREAT 5
degeneration. In this case a person’s skin will over time become thick, wrinkled and leathery or to phrase it another way, they look older. According to the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA), skin cancer is the most common cancer in SA, with our country unfortunate to have one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Luckily most cases are not life threatening and can be prevented if you stay safe in the sun. “80% of sun-induced skin damage occurs before the age of 18 and only manifests later in life,” says CANSA. So it is important that parents follow a number of guidelines to ensure that children don’t suffer any of the abovementioned effects after too much fun in the hot African sun.
lenses (UV400) which will provide efficient UV protection. Sunscreen must be applied to protect children and adults from the sun’s UV rays. It is important to remember that there isn’t a sunscreen out there which provides a complete block and the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is simply an indication of the amount of protection that the sunscreen offers. If one normally starts to get sunburn after five minutes of exposure to the sun, then a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 will protect your skin for 15 times as long, depending also on the time of day and weather conditions. This means that you’re more likely to get sunburnt after around an hour and 15 minutes in the sun. [HD]
Tips for parents Limit the time that children spend in the sun, especially between 10:00 and 15:00, when the sun’s rays are at its most harmful. Ensure that the children wear a hat or cap as well as loose-fitting clothes which are made of tightly-woven fabric that is cool. If you have sunglasses, make sure that these have www.retreatmag.co.za

Supported by his team, Puddy skated from Johannesburg down to Cape Town to raise money for charity. hen it comes to hiking the most essential accessory is of course the backpack and with Back Packer’s Boulder 75L you can not go wrong. The backpack is made from Duracore 1000N and is treated with water repellent and UV protective coatings. It has five external pouches, a Velcro closure map pouch and mesh pockets, with two separate compartments inside which can be combined via a zipper for one big compartment. On the top and bottom it has additional straps for attaching a sleeping mat or bag. When filling the pack it seemed it would never get full as more and more bulky items disappeared into its almost never ending belly. The additional bottom straps came in handy to secure a sleeping

1871 km in total to raise money for SOS Children’s Village. When asked what inspired him to do this, Puddy said that after living a charmed life, he realised it was his time to return the favour. Giving hope to children who do not have the opportunities he had, he is thanking God in his own special way. And if you missed him this year, never fear, he might be doing something similar next year. For more information on this talented young man, visit www.skateforchange.co.za. All cooking gear, food, and tent equipment went into the main bag, as the GPS, water bottles and variety of other essentials fit snugly into the external pouches and bags. The foam in all the shoulder straps and waist belts made for a very comfortable carry. On the lower part of the backpack is a detachable lower-back support cushion which came in quite handy as it was pulled off and used for a cushion on the hard rocks.
