The wonderous Nungubane Game Lodge – Vaalwater
The south western part of Limpopo is known as the Waterberg Region because of the Waterberg mountain range that runs directly through it. This unique destination is filled with stunning landscapes, big five reserves and warm water springs which are all complemented by the sub tropical climate. The Waterberg’s reputation as an adventure zone is well deserved because of its seemingly unending list of activities such as hiking trails, horseback riding, river rafting, mountain biking, elephant back safaris, abseiling, wild animal encounters and skydiving. The diversity of each area of the Waterberg has directly influenced the accommodation, ranging from camping sites that offer a window into the wild, to luxury five star lodges catering for every whim. Food in the Waterberg is an experience all on its own. Since local restaurants have some of the best game dishes in the country, with kudu, springbok as well as crocodile making appearances.

Bela Bela (Warmbaths) pproximately 100 km north of Pretoria on the N1, lies the offramp to the R516. This road leads you into the hot springs holiday town Bela Bela (Warmbaths) well known as one of South Africa’s premier tourism destinations. Bela Bela has become synonymous with family vacations because of the average 286 sunny days per year and the many game reserves and resorts surrounding it. There are two main resorts in town and both are equally entertaining. The first is Forever Resorts where 20 000 litres of mineral spring water boils out of the earth’s core every hour. It is naturally heated to 53ºC making a leisurely swim feel like a relaxing spa bath. The resort sports a vast array of water sport activity including water-skiing, tubing and super tubes. Klein Kariba is the second main resort, which lies in a majestic gorge in the mountain range. Known as the adventurer’s resort, activities available at Klein Kariba include horse riding, kayaking, fishing, super tubing, game drives, mini golf, squash, tennis and

indoor and outdoor hot spring swimming pools. North of Bela Bela lies the Bambelela Wildlife Care and Guest Farm providing special opportunity to interact with free-living Vervet Monkeys and little orphan monkeys. The game reserves surrounding Bela Bela are testament to the Waterberg’s diverse wildlife and nowhere more so than at the Mabalingwe and Mabula game reserves where you can spot Africa’s big five. Bela Bela is also home to South Africa’s only 5-star golfing resort, Zebula Golf Estate and Spa. Zebula offers a wide range of activities such as encounters with lion and tiger cubs, elephant back safaris and the ultimate leisure golfing experience. The Elements Private Golf Reserve is another golfing experience not to be missed. There are a few historical monuments in town with the most notable been the British blockhouse which was built in the early 1900’s to protect the railway against the Boers in the Anglo Boer War. Another is the grave of Christina Pretorius, the wife of Andries Pretorius who was a leader of the Boers and the main driving force behind the establishment of the Transvaal Republic, of which his son, Marthinus Wessel Pretorius, was the first President. Kalahari Oasis Bar
The Kalahari Oasis bar, the site where the old ‘Ja, Swaer’ Castrol adverts where shot, is situated inside the Mabalingwe Nature Reserve and is a definite must visit when entering the reserve. When looking for somewhere to dine in Bela Bela, head to the waterfront where you will find most of the town’s restaurants. The Bela Bela Tourism Festival, also known as the Sunshine Festival, is held in the town at the end of May each year. There is also a Beer festival at O’Hagan’s, held in the middle of June, which includes activities like beer tastings, beer pong, chilli eating and arm wrestling, all while being entertained by an Oompah Band.
Modimolle (Nelspruit) fter a scenic 30 minute drive on the R101 from Bela Bela, you reach the main commercial centre of the Waterberg district, Modimolle. If the sub-tropical climate has you thirsty, then we suggest stopping along the way at one of the ‘padstalls’ for the juiciest peaches, watermelon and grapes. Some of these stalls even stock

mampoer which is known for its impressive taste and formidable kick, but is not the best remedy for dehydration. The Wild Olive Restaurant at Silver Streams is a culinary experience that mixes bushveld with fine dining. Modimolle opens its doors in January of each year for thousands to travellers looking to experience the fruit of the gods during the Waterberg Grape Festival. The festival has many activities including music, flea markets, a cycle challenge and a Comrades Marathon Qualifying Race to Bela Bela. The town offers modern convenience, historic discoveries and a wide range of activities to keep travellers occupied. It also presents visitors with a huge number of attractions and activities such as game lodges, nature reserves, rock climbing, hiking trails and fishing, all available at the resorts. One of the most notable is the Monate lodge, a private reserve that holds three of the big five: rhino, buffalo and leopard. Travellers who are interested in seeing or even eating crocodiles should visit the Thaba Kwena Crocodile Farm, a commercial farm with many croc products available to the public.
Forever Resorts Warmbaths
Tourists interested in golfing should definitely swing by Modimolle’s 18 hole champion-ship golf course, Koro Creek. The golf estate has a spectacular clubhouse built with comfort and luxury in mind, as well as a restaurant that can entertain 80 guests. The restaurant prides itself in the high standard of food that it delivers whilst keeping it affordable. The town is especially rich in history, with the original locomotive used for the 1898 railway line between the town and Pretoria still on display, as well as the Dutch Reformed Church established in 1889. The Modimolle museum, previous residence of old prime minister JG Strijdom also known as “Lion of the North”, showcases implements, furniture and clothes of more than a century ago.
Mookgopong (Naboomspruit) On the N1, 40 km north east of Modimolle, lies Mookgopong a small town surrounded by hot spring resorts. At the end of April each year up to 10 000 travellers flock to
Mookgopong for the Naboom Windpompfees, a cultural smorgasbord of ‘Boere’ food, art and entertainment designed to strengthen the town economically as well as to contribute to those less fortunate. A short drive out of town towards Gauteng, travellers will find the Nylsvley Nature Reserve, an ideal destination for bird lovers.Nearly 400 different bird species call this reserve home, including the Giant Kingfisher. There is also an Anglo Boer War Memorial just outside the reserve at a site where a British train was derailed by Capt. Jack Hindon in the early 1900’s. North of the town lies the Entabeni Safari Conservancy where five lodges of the highest standard are situated. Activities at the game reserve include boat cruises, helicopter flights, paintball, abseiling as well as a wellness centre at the Lakeside lodge. The reserve is also home to the Legends Golf and Safari Resort, that has a one of a kind golfing experience. Called the Extreme 19th, you tee off 430 m above a green shaped like the African continent. South of Modimolle at the Euphoria Golf Estate and Hydro you can enjoy www.StayPlayEat.co.za | 5

a relaxing day on a 18-hole championship golf course and then ride a state of the art cable car up the mountain for a drink at the Sundowner Restaurant.
Mabatlane (Vaalwater) ravelling back to Modimolle, and meandering up the R33 towards the Botswana border, leads you to the small bushveld town of Mabatlane. It lies on the edge of the Waterberg Nature Conservancy which was established in 1990 to conserve more than 150 000 hectares of Waterberg habitat. This has been named a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. The conservancy plays host to a number of animal species and incorporates local farms, nature reserves as well as a number of rural villages in the area. The Taaibos hiking trail is a relatively short hike in the Waterberg mountains (suitable for families), leads you through green forests and various pit stops at waterfalls and rivers. Driving out of Mabatlane towards Melkriver on the gravel road, you’ll find a small thatched

Mabatlane plays host to the Waterberg Game Festival which is timed to coincide with the last game auction of the year, usually at the end of September. The Welgevonden Private Game Reserve is a big five reserve with one of the largest populations of white rhino in the country. The nearly 40 000 ha reserve is also home to rock art of bushmen that inhabited the region hundreds of years ago. The Marekele National Park near Mabatlane offers four of the big five including lion and leopard, and is also home to the largest colony of Cape vultures in SA, with about 800 breeding pairs.

Grootgeluk, which is the largest open-grove coal mine in the world producing over 17 million tons of saleable coal each year, is situated just outside Lephalale. Travellers in search of adventure should stop over at the Bateleur Safari Lodge which is a wonderful tented lodge nestled hidden under massive Marula trees. The activities available include – guided game and archaeological walks, clay pigeon shooting, horseback safaris, pontoon rides and game drives. North of Lephalale, on the banks of the Limpopo River, lies Sebe Sebe Lodge, the perfect place to enjoy day and night game drives, bird watching, fishing and mountain biking. Silver Streams
Mabalingwe Hotel
Limpopo – Waterberg
Modimolle is not necessarily the place best associated with the word “luxurious”. This is, however, the case with Silver Streams, a lodge lying in the heart of the bushveld. Silver Streams, situated only about 10 km outside of Modimolle (Nylstroom) and about an hour and a half from Pretoria, has managed to combine high class design without losing the African touch of its surroundings. The architecture, best described as “Modern African”, is complemented by the fact that all units overlook the small dam, providing not only a relaxing view but also a lovely setting for a perfect bushveld sunset. When we arrived at Silver Streams, the StayPlayEat team was greeted by the full complement of staff, eagerly waiting to bid us welcome with lovely cocktails. That set the tone for the rest of our stay where we were treated to first class service, high-end accommodation and superb dining. With 17 suites able to sleep 34 people per night, the lodge is spacious enough without losing intimacy. Rooms are stylish and modern, while containing all the mod-cons which make for a fantastic stay. On strong recommendation is also treating your culinary senses to a delicious display of fusion cooking at the on-site Wild Olive restaurant. Other activities to partake in include game drives (giraffe, eland, zebras, gazelle etc.), canoeing, informal cooking classes, walking trials and spa treatments. Apart from being a luxurious weekend breakaway, Silver Streams also serves as an amazing wedding venue, while conference facilities are also available.
Just outside Bela Bela (Warmbaths), with the Waterberg mountains forming a tranquil background, lies Mabalingwe Nature Reserve. A mere 112 km outside of Pretoria, the reserve is ideally situated for Gauteng travellers, since it’s not too far from the hub of city life, but not too close either. One of the treats of this 12 500 ha reserve is the diverse wildlife who call Mabalingwe home. The big five is of course the main attraction (the buffalos are back), but there are also a massive number of other game present, not to mention about 260 bird species. Six big dams on the reserve create a change from the bushveld scenery, with hippos, crocodiles and numerous bird species ensuring some spectacular photo opportunities. Mabalingwe has a range of accommodation on offer, including catered, self-catering and camping options. The two sleeper rooms are perfect for that weekend break-away, and for those looking for the classic South African self-catering holiday experience, the six sleeper chalets, featuring a fully equipped kitchen and braai area at every unit, should suit perfectly. Camping and caravanning are of course part and parcel of South African tourism, and with 67 caravan spots, complete with very decent ablutions facilities, swimming pools and playgrounds, on offer, this nature reserve comes highly recommended. Mabalingwe is not only known as a holiday destination though, the reserve is also a prime venue for conferences and weddings. With all this on offer, Mabalingwe is a true example of experiencing the bush in style.

Top 5 Coastal towns
KwaZulu-Natal coastal towns have always been the premier holiday destinations for travellers looking for that perfect mix of excitement and relaxation during the summer months. Now the vast amounts of places to stay, play and eat are quickly turning these towns into the perfect vacationing spots no matter what the season. The all year summer weather and cultural festivals are big contributing factors to the influx of travellers during the quieter months, and between May and July the sardine run, also known as the ‘greatest shoal on earth’, hits the KZN shores. This is where South African Pilchards run through a gauntlet of whales, sharks and other predatory fish as part of their migration to warmer waters. As the next set of public holidays comes closer we inspect what to expect when exploring the KZN towns this year. After long hours on the road and combing through the Hibiscus Coast, Dolphin Coast and the Zululand, we have chosen the five towns that impressed most. 12 | www.StayPlayEat.co.za
Port Edward
ort Edward is a small town named after King Edward VIII in 1925 and is the first stop when entering KwaZulu-Natal from the Eastern Cape. The top priority for any traveller in Port Edward should be the beach, most of which are manned by lifeguards and protected by shark nets. Port Edward also has something for scuba divers: the wreckage of a ship called ‘the Nightingale’ which sank on Glenmore beach in the early 1930’s. Umtamvuna Nature Reserve is known as a botanical haven with a diverse habitat filled with some of the best hiking trails on the Hibiscus Coast. The options vary from short one hour hikes to a six hour walk that meanders through various cliffs, forests and a river. Be sure to be on the lookout for the many small mammals like duiker and bushbuck that inhabit the reserve. The Fish Eagle Restaurant in the Estuary Hotel in Port Edward is an eating experience that won’t be forgotten soon. The restaurant is best known for its tasty and aesthetically pleasing food complimented by a spectacular view of the estuary.
Ballito
Beaver Creek is for those travellers looking for something out of the ordinary. It is a coffee bean farm that grows and roasts their own Arabica coffee as well as over 60 others. Here you can take a tour through the farm and witness the dramatic route coffee takes from plant to a luxurious aromatic cup of the finest flavours.
Margate aking the R61 along the coast for thirty minutes from Port Edward will lead you to one of the most popular towns on the Hibiscus Coast. The popularity of Margate is partly due to the fact that it has the highest concentration of blue flag beaches in the country. This small town is home to Lucien Beach, Margate Beach and Ramsgate Beach, all given blue flag status, meaning they adhere to the international safety, cleanliness and environmental standards. These beaches are manned by lifeguards and have shark nets in place to ensure the safety of travellers looking for some sun and sea.The warm Indian Ocean doesn’t only

attract tourists to Margate but also large schools of dolphins which can be seen from the beach from time to time. The warm Indian Ocean has put snorkeling, scuba diving and surfing on the daily to do list for the inhabitants. If seeing wild animals tickles your fancy, you should head over to the Riverbend Croc Farm or Uvongo River Reserve for that dangerous encounter with nature’s largest reptiles, including the salt water crocodile, black mamba and water leguan. The nightlife in Margate never ends with wonderful restaurants, pubs and clubs that keep on entertaining until the sun comes up. The unique experience of Mariners Restaurant is that of eating with sand between your toes. Here you can enjoy seafood and afterwards take a stroll on the beach. Margate’s beaches are lined with hotels and other accommodation, so there is always somewhere to sleep in the vacation haven. Local arts and crafts are available in shops and on the beach. Beach, with very few people that can walk away from the street vendors without a beautiful straw hat or bag. ISSUE 8 | First Quarter 2012
Umhlanga he same R61 that took you into Margate, leads you out of the town towards Port Shepstone. Here it joins the N2 for a spectacular drive along the Indian Ocean, past various small coastal towns, through Durban into Umhlanga. Umhlanga is home to Gateway Mall a massive “theatre of shopping” with nearly 400 shops, entertainment facilities and restaurants, all masterfully designed to keep you occupied for days on end. For something to drink, travellers should stop at the Cuba Lounge. Exactly as the name suggests it offers you the taste of Cuba, with cigars, hubbly, cocktails, finger foods and Latin music creating a relaxed environment ideal if looking for an enjoyable night out. Eating out in Umhlanga can be tough simply because of the immense number of options available. The obvious choice in Umhlanga is Indian food because of the rich cultural ties KZN has to the Indian subcontinent. We recommend the Gateway to India restaurants famous for its sociable atmosphere and variety of delectable foods.
T
Margate
Umhlanga’s beaches are also protected by nets deployed by the Natal Sharks Board, and travellers can enjoy the warm water and safe beaches as well as the surfing opportunities. Those who are still not ready for surfing the big blue can go to the Wavehouse to ride the biggest man made stationary wave in the world, as well as try out the half pipes and street course designed for BMX, skateboarding and rollerblading. The Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve is the perfect place to get away and relax with many coastal birds, mammals and plants calling it home. The hundreds of bird species are the real reason to go with, species including the brown scrub robin, kelp gull and the redcapped robin-chat.

pools which give travellers peace of mind while kids enjoy the warm Indian Ocean. Dolphin and whale viewing from the shore makes relaxing on the beach all the more entertaining. Willard Beach is also regarded as the ultimate North coast surf spot and plays host to the Mr Price Pro. Scuba Diving with the Water Life Dive School is the ultimate way to experience the deep blue in all its glory. Ballito is designed with every type of traveller in mind and has many activities that cater for those looking for adventure, including the beautiful 18 hole Zimbali golf course, zip line tours over the Esenembi valley and quad biking adventures with Fat Traxx. The shopping possibilities are endless and you will be treated to a whole new experience when entering the malls in the area. This city does not sleep when the sun goes down, with Crush Night Club and Boston Action Bar the preferred locations for late night partying. Ballito also has awesome dining possibilities, and after nearly 20 years in the business Al Pescatore is surely one of the best. It combines the wonderful tastes of Italy with seafood straight from the ocean it overlooks. 14 | www.StayPlayEat.co.za
Thula Thula lodge – Richards Bay
To experience culture in Ballito, travellers must make a point of visiting in the first week of July when the Prawn and Jazz Festival takes over the town for an entire weekend. The celebrations include a market, entertainment for children, local and international Jazz artists, as well as all the prawns you can possibly eat.
Richards Bay wo hours north of Ballito lies Richards Bay, which was built around the lagoon where the Mhlatuze river and Indian ocean meet. The town lies on the largest harbour and estuary in the country, and this adds economic and tourism value to the town. The Thula Thula Private Game Reserve is home to four of Africa’s Big Five as well as 350 different bird species including the Mangrove Kingfisher – a small bird with a large red bill, very rarely seen in South Africa. Travellers are spoiled at this exclusive reserve with four star accommodation, night drives, bush walks, animal encounters and delectable cuisine.
T
Fishing is one of Richards Bays most popular activities and it hosts the annual uMhlathuze fishing festival or Bonanza. It is widely regarded by fisherman as the best place to catch barracuda and king mackerel in the country, and will surely test your skill and stamina when casting your lines into the ocean. The Zululand Expo is held here in the last week of September each year, with a large amount of South African fashion, arts and crafts on display, as well as local and national talent entertaining the festival goers through all three days. Water sports are popular in the large stretch of beaches at Richards Bay particularly surfing and kite surfing being the most popular. The town also has extreme sports such as mountain boarding, motor gliding flights, scuba diving and white water rafting on offer. The Tuzi Gazi Waterfront Mall in Richards Bay is the shopping hub of the town and travellers looking for delicious seafood and steak should make a point of going to Porky’s. The restaurant’s gregarious atmosphere spills over to the deck overlooking the waterfront.

Conclusion ravellers who are interested in the beach, swimming, scuba diving and spear fishing, plus some of the best culinary experiences in the country, will always leave the KZN coast with a smile.
