ANNUAL REPORT 2014

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT

2014 WAS AN AMAZING YEAR FOR ASOCIAȚIA TECHSOUP AND OUR COMMUNITY OF NGOs

We are building the biggest community for nonprofit organizations interested in technology – 1,377 Romanian NGOs are now registered with TechSoup Romania, 377 of which joined in 2014 alone. Bitdefender, the world`s leader in antivirus solutions, became the first Romanian global IT donor in the TechSoup Global Network. We are extremely proud that they now protect nonprofit organizations worldwide. We are also celebrating a new milestone in our mission: in the last 5 years, together with our partners Adobe, Bitdefender, CISCO, Microsoft, and Symantec, we have managed to save the Romanian nonprofit sector more than $3,000,000 USD when accessing licensed software products. With Office 365 for NGOs, we have started a new path in our journey, helping NGOs take their programs to the cloud and become more efficient and prepared for their beneficiaries. By the end of 2014, more than 3,500 NGO 8

employees and volunteers are now using Office 365. In 2014, Symantec joined the companies who are helping Romanian nonprofits protect their data. Throughout the year, we have supported Google Romania’s efforts to promote Google AdGrants, an amazing opportunity for NGOs to advertise their cause for free. 2014 was our most active year yet, with an average of 3 public event per month. The learning resources that we have created for our community of nonprofit organizations have reached more than 800 NGOs employees and volunteers. We are grateful to all the trainers who have dedicated their time and professional expertise to help Romanian NGOs discover how to use technology to promote their causes online. Our newest partner, ING Bank, and their volunteers have helped us create the first financial education learning program aimed at NGO employees and volunteers. Our commitment to promote technology as a tool for social change went even further in 2014; partnering with Microsoft Romania, we have started to promote computer science skills and careers in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to high-school students in 15 counties in Romania, working with more than 2,100 students in 2014 alone. The program, Opening Opportunities, won the 2nd prize in the Social Responsibility category of the Civil Society Gala in June 2014. This is the first time that an IT company was rewarded for its social involvement in this competition. We could not have come this far without the trust and on-going support of our amazing software donation partners, our long-time partners and financial sponsors, our NGO community, and the dedication of our new Board and Executive Team – all of them more committed than ever to create a world where every Romanian NGO has the technology it needs to reach its full potential. Radu Moțoc, Executive Vice President - Asociația TechSoup România

MAKING THE MOST OF ONLINE FOR ROMANIAN NGOs

Google AdGrants for NGOs In 2014, Google AdGrants became available for nonprofits in Romania. Google offers each organization a grant of $10,000 USD for promotion on Google AdWords platform. We were glad to support Google Romania’s effort to promote this opportunity for NGOs. We have organized 3 webinars about using Google AdWords and taught nonprofit organizations how to promote their cause for free with Google’s support.

TechSoup’s mission seems unique [to me], at least in Romania, and this allowed us to reach a very relevant audience with our Google Grants seminar. We had very good communication with our target audience and this resulted in an impressive participation in the seminar.”

Radu Stoica Analytical Lead, Google Romania

Digital School for NGOs We have trained 810 NGO employees and volunteers in everything from SEO to AdWords, Office 365, the use of CRM solutions, cyber security, stock photography, unconventional advertising and storytelling. We are grateful to the companies, NGOs and experts who donated their time and knowledge to teach NGO employees and volunteers: Microsoft, Bitdefender, ING Bank, Zitec, Dreamstime, 2Parale, Creionetica, Good Afternoon, Simplon and Association for Community Relations.

I do believe that in order to achieve greater and greater things, you have to give something back. That is why, together with my colleagues at Good Afternoon, each year, we give time to help and support NGOs and Start-ups that get our attention. I have found in TechSoup an honest partner which provides resources and projects that bring joy to my activist soul.” Mihai Năsăudean Co-founder, Good Afternoon

20

Empower Nonprofit Organizations with Technological Knowledge For some of the NGOs we serve, our webinars are the only online learning resources that they can access for free.

From the moment we have discovered you, everything TechSoup Romania means was a very nice surprise. On webinars, whether we talk about Social Media, Online Security or Financial Reporting, we had the pleasure to meet very professional people. There were interesting and useful things presented in a clear and concise way.” Claudiu Băileșteanu President of CALAN 1387 Association, a small non-profit organization in Hunedoara county.

“ “ 26

How does it feel to be a mentor in Opening Opportunities? Opening Opportunities is for me that awesome course that I never had in school. It is something that 20 years ago was nowhere, not even on the internet. Opening Opportunities has something that is missing in the Romanian educations system: you choose a mentor, who can answer your questions so you can see clearly which direction is suitable for your future.” Alex Bohaltea Technical Advisor, Microsoft Romania

We are all very busy, but if we try to find some time to volunteer, we will see that the time invested will have a major impact on ourselves. My advice is to try it, just once.” Alex Coltea Support Manager, Microsoft Romania

Hour of Code – 8 Events in 5 cities

85 high-school students from 17 high-schools in Bucharest had the time of their lives playing and working with technology for one day. Four young entrepreneurs were their mentors for the day. The students had the opportunity to do 3D printing, hear their first tech pitch, and see firsthand the skills and capabilities showcased by their mentors.

With Microsoft Romania’s support, we have celebrated Hour of Code in 8 schools, in 5 different cities. More than 500 students had their first coding hour with us and the enthusiastic mentors from Microsoft Student Partners. The Bucharest Metropolitan Library also partnered with us in showing 100 7th graders their first line of code.

December 2014
