ARLINDO LIMEDE DE OLIVEIRA PRESIDENTE/PRESIDENT

Neste número da revista Valores Próprios, terá a oportunidade de descobrir que o Técnico não é só uma escola de engenharia, ciência, tecnologia e arquitetura. É muito mais que isso: é também uma escola onde a fotografia, a música, a pintura, o teatro e outras formas de expressão artística são uma segunda natureza, para muitos dos nossos alunos, professores e funcionários.

EN Since its foundation, Instituto Superior Técnico has been not only a school for science but also for culture. Its first director, Alfredo Bensaude, infused unique characteristics into the school ever since its foundation in 1911. Besides future engineers, the school has helped training musicians, actors, writers and artists.

This connection between IST and culture did not occur so much because of a strong curriculum component associated with this area, but rather because of the natural appeal that many IST students and teachers have felt towards the arts.

Of course there are important links between mathematics and music, physics and photography, engineering and drawing. This may explain why so many IST professors and graduates have come to stand out more for their work in the cultural field than for their scientific and technological contributions. But the truth is that many of our professors and researchers exceled in both areas, demonstrating thus the meaningful synergies that exist between science and the arts.

In this edition of Valores Próprios, you will have the opportunity to realise that Técnico is not just a school for engineering, science, technology and architecture. It is much more than that: it is also a school where photography, music, painting, theater and other forms of artistic expression are second nature to many of our students, teachers and staff.

VALORES PRÓPRIOS 25 — 2019

PT O Instituto Superior Técnico foi, desde a sua fundação, não só uma escola de ciência, mas também de cultura. O primeiro diretor, Alfredo Bensaude, imprimiu desde logo, em 1911, um cunho único a esta escola que, para além dos futuros engenheiros, ajudou a formar músicos, atores, escritores e artistas. Esta ligação do IST à cultura não terá ocorrido tanto por força de uma forte componente curricular associada a esta área, mas mais pela natural atração que muitos alunos e professores do IST demonstraram pelas artes.

Existem, naturalmente, relações importantes entre a matemática e a música, entre a física e a fotografia, entre a engenharia e o desenho. Isso talvez explique que tantos professores e graduados do IST tenham vindo a destacar-se mais pela sua atuação no campo da cultura do que pelas contribuições científicas e tecnológicas.

Mas a verdade é que muitos dos nossos professores e investigadores alcançaram grande prestígio em ambas as áreas, demonstrando assim as importantes sinergias que existem entre a ciência e a arte.

PT O Tubo de Choque Europeu para Investigação de Escoamentos de Altas Entalpias — ESTHER, no acrónimo em inglês — foi simbolicamente inaugurado no Campus Tecnológico e Nuclear, no dia 24 de julho — a mesma data em que a Missão Apollo regressou à Terra em 1969.

Para assistir ao descerramento da placa e à celebração do momento histórico, estiveram presentes várias individualidades, tais como: o ministro da Ciência, Tecnologia e Ensino Superior, Manuel Heitor; o responsável pelos veículos espaciais e engenharia aero-termodinâmica da Agência Espacial Europeia (ESA na sigla em inglês), Guillermo Ortega; a presidente da Agência Espacial Portuguesa (Portugal Space), Chiara Manfletti; o presidente da Câmara Municipal de Loures, Bernardino Soares; o vice-reitor da Universidade de Lisboa, professor José Manuel Pinto Paixão; e o presidente do Técnico, professor Arlindo Oliveira.

Nas várias intervenções, que se sucederam ao longo da cerimónia, foi exaltado o valor da infraestrutura e as suas caraterísticas únicas. Foram igualmente ressaltadas as portas que as experiências feitas no ESTHER permitirão abrir.

EN The European Shock-Tube for High Enthalpy Research — ESTHER — was symbolically inaugurated at the Tecnológico e Nuclear Campus on July 24th, the same day the Apollo 11 Mission returned to Earth in 1969. Several leading figures attended the plaque unveiling and the celebration of the historic moment: Manuel Heitor, Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education; Guillermo Ortega, head of space vehicles and aero-thermodynamic engineering of the European Space Agency (ESA); Chiara Manfletti, president of the Portuguese Space Agency (Portugal Space); Bernardino Soares, Mayor of Loures; Professor José Manuel Pinto Paixão, Vice-rector of Universidade de Lisboa, and Professor Arlindo Oliveira, President of the IST. The speeches that took place throughout the ceremony exalted the value of the infrastructure, with particular emphasis on its unique characteristics, as well as the doors that the experiments made in ESTHER will allow us to open.

PT No lote dos brilhantes estudantes distinguidos com o Prémio Primus Inter Pares 2019 estão dois alunos do Técnico: Nuno Calejo e Daniel Costa, donos do 3.º e 4.º lugares do galardão.

Daniel Costa, aluno de Engenharia Física Tecnológica, e Nuno Calejo, aluno de Engenharia Aeroespacial, veem a gestão como uma área chave. Ingressaram no Técnico atraídos pela Engenharia, gosto que foram aprimorando ao longo dos anos e com o conhecimento adquirido, mas não desvalorizam a importância dos conhecimentos em ambas as áreas e da ligação entre elas.

Prestes a entregarem as teses de mestrado, os dois alunos não adiantam grandes planos para o futuro, a não ser os de terminar com sucesso esta etapa. A curto ou médio prazo, tencionam usufruir dos prémios que conquistaram: um MBA para Nuno Calejo, e a pós-graduação, no caso de Daniel Costa.

EN Two Técnico students shone amongst the outstanding students distinguished with the Primus Inter Pares 2019 Award: Nuno Calejo and Daniel Costa, who ranked 3rd and 4th.

Daniel Costa, a Physical Engineering student, and Nuno Calejo, an Aerospace Engineering student, both see management as a key area, although they chose Técnico because of engineering — an aptitude they came to improve over the years of accumulated knowledge. This being so, both acknowledge the relevance of these areas and the way they are connected.

About to hand in their Master’s dissertations, the two students do not disclose any big plans for the future, apart from the successful completion of this stage.

They intend to take advantage of their awards in the short or medium term: an MBA for Nuno Calejo, and a postgraduate degree in the case of Daniel Costa.

Instituto de Telecomunicações faz história na área das tecnologias quânticas Instituto de Telecomunicações makes history in the field of quantum technologies

Técnico assina parceria com a Huawei Técnico signs partnership with Huawei

PT No dia 8 de julho, a distribuição de uma chave criptográfica por comunicações quânticas sem fio foi feita pela primeira vez com sucesso em Portugal. Foi entre as duas torres do campus da Alameda, cobrindo uma distância de 180 metros.

A experiência inédita foi conduzida pelo Grupo de Física da Informação e Tecnologias Quânticas do Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT), a partir do laboratório QuTe Lab (Quantum Technologies Laboratory). Para assistir à demonstração, estiveram presentes a professora Carole Mundell, chief scientific adviser do Foreign and Commonwealth Office do Reino Unido, Christopher Sainty, embaixador britânico em Portugal, o professor Jürgen Mlynek, chair do Strategic Advisory Board do programa europeu Flagship in Quantum Technologies, o professor Arlindo Oliveira, presidente do Técnico, o professor Carlos Salema, presidente do (IT), e o professor Luís Oliveira e Silva, presidente do Conselho Científico, entre outros.

PT O Técnico e a Huawei formalizaram, a 25 de julho, um protocolo que visa apoiar a formação de estudantes de mestrado da área de Engenharia de Telecomunicações.

A Huawei junta-se ao Departamento de Engenharia Eletrotécnica e de Computadores do Técnico (DEEC), tendo como objetivo acompanhar alunos da área de telecomunicações no desenvolvimento das teses de mestrado.

Através desta parceria, será dada aos alunos do Técnico a oportunidade de serem integrados num ambiente de inovação, conhecendo e aprendendo com os profissionais altamente qualificados e experientes da empresa tecnológica.

Além do apoio na preparação das teses, os alunos serão confrontados e auxiliados na abordagem aos desafios resultantes da convergência entre a informática e as telecomunicações.

Com esta colaboração, as duas entidades pretendem contribuir para as necessidades e evolução da sociedade contemporânea, através do desenvolvimento de projetos numa das áreas com maior e mais rápida influência.

EN On July 8th, the distribution of a cryptographic key over wireless quantum communications was successfully made for the first time in Portugal, between the two towers of Alameda campus, covering a distance of 180 meters.

The unprecedented experiment was conducted by the Physics of Information and Quantum Technologies Group of Instituto de Telecominicações (IT), from the QuTe Lab (Quantum Technologies Laboratory). Attending the demonstration were Professor Carole Mundell, Chief Scientific Adviser of the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Christopher Sainty, British Ambassador to Portugal, Professor Jürgen Mlynek, Chair of the Strategic Advisory Board of the European program Flagship in Quantum Technologies, Professor Arlindo Oliveira, Técnico’s President, Professor Carlos Salema, President of IT, and Professor Luís Oliveira e Silva, President of the Scientific Board, among others.

EN On July 25th, Técnico and Huawei formally signed a protocol to support the training of Master’s students in the area of Telecommunications Engineering. Huawei joins Técnico’s Department of Electrotechnical and Computer Engineering (DEEC), aiming to assist students in the telecommunication’s area in the development of their Master’s dissertations.

Thanks to this partnership, Técnico’s students will be given the opportunity to join an environment of innovation, getting to know and learning from the tech company’s highly qualified and experienced professionals. In addition to support in preparing their dissertation, students will be confronted and assisted in addressing the challenges arising from the convergence between computing and telecommunications.

With this collaboration the two entities intend to develop projets within telecommunications engineering, a fastest growing area.

PT Cerca de 400 estudantes, provenientes de todo mundo, que vieram a Portugal para participar na Academia Europeia da Inovação (EIA, na sigla em inglês), visitaram o Técnico e ficaram fascinados com o campus da Alameda.

A delegação, composta de estudantes vindos dos quatro cantos do mundo, visitou vários museus e laboratórios do Técnico. Os laboratórios TOKAMAK, um reator de fusão nuclear experimental, e o X-Golp, que desenvolve mecanismos alternativos para um estudo mais eficiente do laser e das propriedades óticas, foram alguns dos pontos de paragem do grupo. Para além das visitas, os estudantes tiveram oportunidade de assistir a workshops e palestras relacionadas com várias matérias.

A visita ao Técnico assumiu-se como um dos pontos altos do programa da EIA 2019, permitindo aos participantes conhecer uma das melhores escolas de Engenharia da Europa, contactando com os talentos e as tecnologias que aqui se desenvolvem no Técnico.

EN About 400 students from all over the world who came to Portugal to participate in the European Academy of Innovation (EIA) visited Técnico and were fascinated with the Alameda campus.

The delegation, made up of hundreds of students from all over the world, visited several IST museums and laboratories. Stops included the TOKAMAK Laboratories, an experimental nuclear fusion reactor, and X-Golp, which develops alternative mechanisms for a more efficient study of laser and optical properties. Besides these visits, students had the opportunity to attend workshops and lectures related to different subjects.

The tour was one of the highlights of the EIA 2019 program, allowing its participants to know one of the best engineering schools in Europe, as well as getting in touch with the talents and technologies developed therein.

PT Os estudantes do Técnico Jorge Palha, aluno de Engenharia Aeroespacial, Simão Nunes, aluno de Engenharia Informática e de Computadores, e João Ramiro, aluno de Engenharia Eletrotécnica e de Computadores, integram a equipa que alcançou o primeiro lugar do Desafio i4.0.

Hugo Mendonça, aluno da Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto, também integra a equipa vencedora.

A hackathon decorreu no âmbito da cimeira empresarial da COTEC, estendeu-se ao longo de 24 horas, e contou com a participação de cerca de 70 estudantes.

O desafio tinha como objetivo promover a Indústria 4.0 junto do meio académico, através da aprendizagem e utilização da plataforma SAS para a transformação de dados industriais em inteligência.

A equipa venceu uma ida a Barcelona para fazer parte do IoT Solutions World Congress, um dos maiores eventos na área da Internet das Coisas, onde além de palestras com conceituados especialistas, os jovens aproveitarão para fazer networking.

Hugo Mendonça, student at the Faculty of Engineering – University of Porto, was also part of the winning team.

The hackathon took place at COTEC Innovation Summit , lasted for 24 hours, and was attended by about 70 students. The challenge was intended to promote Industry 4.0 among academia through the learning and use of the SAS platform to transform industrial data into intelligence.

The team won a trip to Barcelona to attend the IoT Solutions World Congress, where they will have the opportunity to be lectured by renowned experts and do some networking.

Jovem talento do Técnico conquista bolsa de doutoramento Young talent of Técnico earns doctoral scholarship

EN For the 9th consecutive year, the Lisbon Machine Learning School (LxMLS) has been a huge success. For over a week, more than 180 participants were selected amongst 680 candidates. “Most of the participants are Master’s or Phd students, but more than 30 come from companies,” says IST Professor Mário Figueiredo, a researcher at Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT), and one of the event’s organisers.

The initiative was attended by people from all continents. Germany was the foreign country with most representatives.

This edition of LxMLS was jointly organised by Técnico, Instituto de Telecomunicações, INESC-ID, Unbabel, Priberam Labs and also Feedzai. Sponsors made it possible for about 20 students who had shown potential in these areas and could not afford attendance fees to be part of the event.

PT João Barata, antigo aluno do Técnico, foi um dos 57 jovens selecionados pela Fundação La Caixa para receber uma bolsa no âmbito do programa de doutoramento INPhINIT, cofinanciado pela Comissão Europeia e com a duração máxima de três anos. Estas bolsas destinam-se a jovens de várias nacionalidades, e têm como objetivo “incluir jovens talentos” nas universidades e nos centros de investigação de referência de Espanha.

As bolsas da Fundação La Caixa são geralmente tidas como sendo de grande prestígio, tanto a nível pessoal como para a instituição que acolhe o bolseiro. “São também bolsas muito competitivas e que oferecem condições financeiras e não-financeiras que vão além das bolsas de doutoramento mais comuns”, explica João Barata.

Neste momento, o doutoramento do investigador foca-se em tentar perceber a importância da formação e coerência quando sistemas quânticos atravessam um meio.

PT Pelo 9.º ano consecutivo, a Lisbon Machine Learning School (LxMLS) voltou a ser marcada com o carimbo do sucesso.

Ao longo de uma semana, foram mais de 180 os participantes, selecionados entre mais de 680 candidatos. “A maioria dos participantes são estudantes de mestrado ou doutoramento, mas mais de 30 participantes vêm de empresas”, assinala o professor Mário Figueiredo, docente do Técnico, investigador do Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT), e um dos organizadores do evento. A iniciativa contou com participantes de todos os continentes, sendo a Alemanha o país estrangeiro com mais representantes.

Esta edição da LxMLS foi organizada conjuntamente pelo Técnico, o Instituto de Telecomunicações, o INESC-ID, Unbabel, Priberam Labs e também a Feedzai.

Os patrocinadores ofereceram a participação a cerca de 20 estudantes que revelaram potencial nestas áreas, e não dispunham de meios para financiar a participação.

EN João Barata, a Técnico alumnus, was one of 57 selected by La Caixa Foundation to receive a scholarship under the INPhINIT doctoral program, co-financed by the European Commission and lasting for a maximum of three years. These scholarships are aimed at young people of various nationalities and are intended to “bring young talent” to Spain’s leading universities and research centres.

La Caixa Foundation scholarships are generally regarded as highly prestigious for both student and host institution. “These are also very competitive scholarships that offer financial and non-financial conditions that go beyond usual doctoral scholarships,” explains João Barata.

At this point, the young researcher’s PhD is focused on trying to understand the importance of formation and coherence when quantum systems traverse a medium.

Consórcio pretende reforçar o impacto da Engenharia no mundo lusófono Consortium aims to reinforce the impact of Engineering in the Lusophone world

PT Um Consórcio que une seis das principais escolas de Engenharia, numa estratégia conjunta e com vista para o mundo e o futuro — e tendo, para já, como foco os países de língua portuguesa —, foi anunciado no passado dia 24 de julho.

O Consórcio de Escolas de Engenharia (CEE) reúne o Instituto Superior Técnico, a Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto, a Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade de Coimbra, a Escola de Engenharia da Universidade do Minho, a Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa e a Universidade de Aveiro.

A colaboração assume linhas de ação comuns em vários domínios, nomeadamente na contribuição para a excelência no ensino, na investigação e na inovação.

EN A Consortium that unites six leading engineering schools in a joint strategy, aiming to be global and geared towards the future — focusing on Portuguesespeaking countries for the time being — was announced on July 24th.

The Engineering Schools Consortium (CEE) brings together IST, the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra, the School of Engineering of the University of Minho, the Faculty of Science and Technology of the New University of Lisbon and the University of Aveiro.

The collaboration takes on common lines of action in a number of areas, including contributing to excellence in teaching, research and innovation.

PT Durante oito horas ininterruptas, foram cerca de 30 os jovens que se bateram por um lugar na equipa que irá representar Portugal na European Cyber Security Challenge 2019, uma competição de cibersegurança promovida pela ENISA. Portugal ainda não se tinha feito representar na competição, mas, este ano, com o apuramento dos 10 melhores reforços nacionais, o panorama altera-se. A competição da qual saiu apurada a seleção nacional consistiu nas habituais Capture the Flag (CTF) da área da cibersegurança.

Entre os dez selecionados estão Baltasar Dinis, João Borges, Marcelo Santos, Manuel Goulão, Manuel Sousa, Nuno Sabino e Vasco Franco, todos alunos do Instituto Superior Técnico e elementos da Security Team do Técnico (STT).

Em outubro, a equipa apurada rumará a Bucareste para representar da melhor forma as cores nacionais.

EN Around 30 young people struggled for eight uninterrupted hours for a spot on the team that will represent Portugal at the European Cyber Security Challenge 2019, a cybersecurity competition promoted by ENISA. Portugal had not yet been represented in the competition, but this year, with the qualification of the ten best national talents, the picture changed. In October, the team will head to Bucharest to represent Portugal in the best way the challenge consisted of Capture the Flag (CTF) in cybersecurity.

Among the ten selected are Baltasar Dinis, João Borges, Marcelo Santos, Manuel Goulão, Manuel Sousa, Nuno Sabino and Vasco Franco, all Técnico’s students and Técnico’s Security Team (STT) members.

In October, the qualified team will head to Bucharest to strongly represent the national colors.

Técnico Solar Boat em grande destaque na competição do Mónaco Técnico Solar Boat on a roll at the Monaco Competition

EN “He dedicated himself to the study of molecular fluid admixture thermodynamics, having published over 170 articles in international journals and trained several generations of chemists in Portugal.” This is one of several reasons behind this award given to Professor Jorge Calado, one of the most iconic professors at Técnico. The medals were handed at the opening of Encontro Ciência 2019, an event which took place on July 8th.

Scientific Merit medals are an initiative instituted by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education that distinguishes “national individuals who, thanks to their high professional qualities and fulfilment of duty, were notable for their valuable and exceptional contribution to the development of science or scientific culture in Portugal”.

PT O prenúncio de que este seria um bom ano para a equipa do Técnico Solar Boat começou a ganhar força na fase de classificação do Monaco Solar and Energy Boat Challenge, com a conquista do 1.º lugar.

Menos de 24 horas depois, o feito repetia-se, com a tomada do 1.º lugar na prova de Endurance. Nas duas últimas provas, a equipa manteve o nível e não defraudou expetativas, conquistando o 2.º lugar na prova de Championship Race e o 4.º na prova de Slalom.

A classificação geral refletia a ótima prestação da equipa, com o Técnico Solar Boat a arrecadar o 2.º lugar da classe A, alcançando a melhor classificação de sempre. “Termos a oportunidade de representar Portugal e o Instituto Superior Técnico é um orgulho imenso, uma experiência única, e voltarmos para casa com este resultado ficará para sempre nas nossas memórias”, assinala Dinis Rodrigues, líder do projeto universitário.

PT “Dedicou-se ao estudo da termodinâmica de fluídos moleculares e das suas misturas, tendo publicado mais de 170 artigos em revistas internacionais e formado várias gerações de químicos em Portugal”. Este é um dos vários motivos por detrás da atribuição da medalha de mérito científico ao professor Jorge Calado, um dos mais icónicos docentes do Técnico. A entrega das medalhas decorreu na abertura do Encontro Ciência 2019, no dia 8 de julho.

As medalhas de mérito científico são uma iniciativa instituída pelo Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Ensino Superior, que galardoa “individualidades nacionais que, pelas elevadas qualidades profissionais e do cumprimento do dever, se distinguiram pelo valioso e excecional contributo para o desenvolvimento da ciência ou da cultura científica em Portugal”.

EN The expectation that this would be a good year for the Técnico Solar Boat team began to gain momentum when they took the 1st place in the Monaco Solar and Energy Boat Challenge qualifying round. Less than 24 hours later, the feat was repeated, with the 1st place in the Endurance race.

On the last two races, the team kept the pace and did not disappoint, winning the 2nd place on the Championship Race and the 4th on the Slalom race.

The overall rankings reflected the excellent performance of the team, with Técnico Solar Boat taking the 2nd place in class A, the best position ever achieved. “We are so proud to have had the the opportunity to represent Portugal and Instituto Superior Técnico. It was a unique experience, and returning home with this result will be forever in our minds,” says Dinis Rodrigues, leader of this university project.

falta de uso”, assinalava Alfredo Bensaude no prefácio do primeiro número da revista Técnica Industrial (1915). Estes ideais ficaram bem expressos no modelo pedagógico que preconizou para o Técnico e que ainda hoje não são esquecidos nos estatutos da instituição. •

EN Someone’s passions are beyond explanation, and sometimes are also completely unrelated. But it is not hard to see how anyone with a deep interest in crystals and rocks is also an admirer of the timbre of a violin — bright and difficult to overlook — and of the structure that generates it. Alfredo Bensaude did not fail to notice that these apparently unrelated fields share several characteristics. Although geology was the center of the IST founder’s academic life, his great passion was the “rabeca” — a term used in many places and favoured by Bensaude himself. “Imagine how exalted the enthusiasm of a happy mortal capable of making, one by one, the thirty pieces a violin consists of, so as to build a pleasant-sounding and goodlooking instrument with them, is” he explained in an interview to the Os Açores magazine. According to Alfredo Bensaude himself, his love for these instruments and for the art behind their construction began

when he was studying in Hanover and had the privilege of witnessing the repetition of the acoustics experiments conducted

by French physician and physicist Felix Savart. Driven by the audacity that made him stand out from the rest, he built his first violin in 1874 and suspended his studies to devote himself to the art of building “rabecas”, under the guidance of Danish expert Jacob Eritzoe. “The passion for the charms of the “rabeca” cost me one year of my studies, because it led me to abandon them while I was learning — a blessed tomfoolery that probably rescued me from worse tomfooleries, and which has brought me so many happy hours!,” the IST founder said.

Symmetry is one of the traits of his instruments — present both in the curvature of the plates and in the contour of the ribs.

The varnish with which he coated his violins was created by himself, giving them a peculiar transparency and shine. He named every single one of the seven violins he built, and it was with “Swan Song” (1927) that he ended his “task as a violin maker”.

His will determined that all violins should be inherited by his daughter Matilde, who offered one of them to IST. Alfredo Bensaude’s passion for music, as well as his knowledge of the subject, are captured in the essay “An Evolutionary Conception of Music” (1905), in which the author’s straightforward writing takes us on a journey through the origins and evolution of music.

“Learning to see and wisely use our hands is more difficult and more important than memorising theories and facts, because it entails not only a mnemonic enrichment, but the whole range of essential qualities of the spirit and even character, which, in most cases, have atrophied over the years due to lack of use”, Alfredo Bensaude said in the foreword to the first issue of the magazine Técnica Industrial (1915). These ideals were fully expressed in the pedagogical model he advocated for Técnico, and are still mentioned in the institution’s statutes. •

PT Gostos não se explicam, e muitas vezes nem se aproximam. Mas não é difícil perceber que alguém que revela um interesse profundo por cristais e rochas também seja um admirador do timbre do violino — brilhante e difícil de passar despercebido — e da estrutura que o origina. São campos distantes, mas com traços tão análogos, que não passaram despercebidos a Alfredo Bensaude. Se foi na geologia que o fundador do Técnico centrou a vida académica, foram as rabecas — terminologia usada em muitos lugares e de que era adepto — a grande paixão de que fez questão de não abdicar. “Imagine-se de que exaltação é suscetível o entusiasmo do feliz mortal capaz de confecionar, uma por uma, as trinta e tantas peças de que se compõe o violino, para com elas construir um instrumento de som agradável e de boa aparência”, explicava o próprio, em entrevista, à revista Os Açores.

O furor por estes instrumentos e pela arte por detrás da sua construção, como contava orgulhosamente o próprio Alfredo Bensaude, terá despertado quando, em Hanôver, onde fez os estudos preparatórios, teve o privilégio de assistir à repetição das experiências de acústica do médico e físico francês Félix Savart. Em 1874, guiado pelo arrojo que o demarcava, constrói o seu primeiro violino, interrompendo mesmo os estudos para dedicar-se a aprender a arte de construir rabecas, orientado pelo dinamarquês Jacob Eritzoe. “A paixão pelos encantos da rabeca valeu-me, naturalmente, a perda de um ano dos meus estudos, pois levou-me a abandoná-los enquanto durou a minha aprendizagem — abençoada estroinice que me desviou provavelmente de outras piores e tantas horas felizes me tem proporcionado!”, contava o fundador do Técnico.

A simetria é uma das marcas dos seus instrumentos, presente quer na curvatura dos tampos, quer no contorno da costilha.

O verniz com que os revestia era uma composição sua, que lhes conferia uma transparência e brilho muito caraterísticos. Dos sete violinos que construiu, a nenhum lhe faltou o nome, e foi com o “Canto do Cisne” (1927) que terminou a sua “tarefa de construtor de violinos”. No testamento, deixou expressa a vontade de que fosse a filha Matilde a herdá-los, tendo sido um deles oferecido ao Técnico pela própria.

O gosto de Alfredo Bensaude pela música, assim como o seu espetro de conhecimentos sobre a matéria, estão plasmados no ensaio “Uma Concepção Evolucionista da Música (1905)”, no qual é possível viajar entre as origens e a evolução da música através da perspetiva frontal do autor.

PT “Foi soberbo, fenomenal” — é assim que o professor Henrique Oliveira, docente do Departamento de Matemática (DM) e programador da Temporada de Música do Instituto Superior Técnico, recorda o primeiro concerto de todos, em 2007. Desde então, e depois de Marco Mencoboni — que conduziu o espetáculo inaugural —, seguiram-se nos programas das Temporadas nomes sonantes da música clássica, mas não só. Mário Laginha, Jorge Moyano, António Sequeira Costa, Cristina Nóbrega e António Pinho Vargas são alguns dos nomes que foram marcando as sucessivas edições. Doze anos e mais de 66 concertos depois, a Temporada de Música do Técnico continua a proporcionar momentos únicos à audiência, a despertar e alimentar o gosto musical da comunidade do Técnico.

A ideia de alargar o palco de talento que o Técnico sempre foi ao domínio musical surgiu nas conversas entre o professor Carlos Matos Ferreira — na altura, presidente da Escola — e o professor

EN “It was superb, phenomenal.” This is how Professor Henrique Oliveira, a professor in the Department of Mathematics (DM) and curator of the Temporada de Música do Instituto Superior Técnico, recalls the first concert of all, in 2007.

Since then, and after Marco Mencoboni, who conducted the opening show, notorious names in classical music, but not only, have appeared in the Seasons’ programs. Mário Laginha, Jorge Moyano, António Sequeira Costa, Cristina Nóbrega and António Pinho Vargas were some of the names that marked the following editions. Twelve years and more than 66 concerts later, the Temporada de Música [Music Season] do Técnico continues to provide unique experiences to the audience, awakening and nurturing the musical taste of the School’s community.

The idea of widening the stage for talent that Técnico has always been to the musical domain arose in conversations between Professor Carlos Matos Ferreira — at the time, president of the

PT Henrique Oliveira, ambos aficionados por música. “O Técnico já tinha tido algumas iniciativas musicais, nomeadamente na direção do professor Almeida Costa, antes do 25 de abril, e até tinha um piano e tudo”, partilha o docente do DM. Por detrás desta ideia, estava também uma das convicções do fundador do Técnico, como faz questão de relembrar o programador: “o professor Alfredo Bensaude defendia que o Técnico devia formar homens completos, não só preocupados com a Engenharia, mas também com a cultura, com a cidadania e com o desporto”.

Plantada a ideia, e reunida a vontade de executá-la, foi preciso orquestrar um arranque em grande, que desse sentido e futuro a esta iniciativa. “Lançamos uma minitemporada experimental, só com três concertos, e um deles incluía as Vésperas de Monteverdi. Foi um concerto extraordinário, de nível mundial, trouxemos os melhores solistas de música antiga, e um dos melhores maestros que havia: o Marco Mencoboni”, recorda o professor Henrique Oliveira. A Sé Patriarcal de Lisboa foi o palco escolhido para o concerto, e o resultado ultrapassaria todas as expetativas, registando uma enorme adesão. O sucesso inesperado conferiu fulgor e sentido à ideia, como assinala o programador da iniciativa: “Foi uma ótima rampa de lançamento”.

Apesar de se repartirem ao longo do ano, é no segundo semestre que se realiza a grande maioria dos concertos, nomeadamente na época natalícia. “Os concertos de Natal são os que registam normalmente maior adesão, primeiro porque já são uma tradição, e depois porque tentamos sempre fazer coisas diferentes e espetaculares”, garante o professor Henrique Oliveira. Por sua vez, também a parceria com a Editora Althum se tem assumido como um importante pilar das Temporadas de Música do Técnico, resultando desta coprodução um número significativo de concertos na igreja de São Vicente de Fora. “Outra das marcas que temos tentado manter também é a ligação forte a artistas que foram antigos alunos do Técnico”, aponta o docente do DM. A convicção por detrás do conceito foi fazendo o número de edições aumentar, e, apesar de nem sempre a adesão aos concertos ser titanesca, o principal objetivo tem sido sempre suplantado. “A ideia é fazer cultura com carimbo do Técnico, mas sobretudo reforçar a nossa missão de formação do Homem Universal”, frisa o professor Henrique Oliveira. “É também uma forma de oferecer à sociedade lisboeta e ao país inteiro atividades culturais, porque oferecer cultura pura também faz parte da missão do Técnico”, acrescenta. O passar dos anos foi conferindo algumas limitações ao projeto inicial, como explica o professor Henrique

Oliveira: “Houve uma redução do orçamento para estas atividades, o que tornou difícil manter a espetacularidade das coisas, por mais que tenhamos sempre tentado manter a qualidade”.

Assim — e como bem manda a engenharia —, o futuro desta iniciativa é composto a dois tempos: o da preservação da excelência e a procura da inovação. “Temos vindo a pensar abrir espaço para outros estilos nas Temporadas, se bem que a música clássica continuará a ser o nosso foco, porque é menos acessível e acreditamos que, com estes concertos, podemos também começar a formar novos públicos”, vinca o docente do DM. Para já, uma coisa é certa: “Até hoje, houve muita coisa bonita nestas Temporadas.

Houve uma série de momentos musicais marcantes propiciados pelo Técnico e isso é muito gratificante”, garante o professor Henrique Oliveira. •

and one of the best maestros of the time: the one and only Marco Mencoboni”, remembers Professor Henrique Oliveira.

Lisbon’s Cathedral was the stage chosen for the concert and the result surpassed all expectations, with a huge turn-out. The unexpected success gave the idea sense and sparkle, as the curator points out: “It was a great launching pad.”

Although spread throughout the year, the vast majority of concerts takes place from June onwards, and mostly during Christmas season. “Christmas concerts are usually the ones with the highest attendance, first because they are already a tradition, and also because we always try to do different and spectacular things,” says Professor Henrique Oliveira. In turn, the partnership with Editora Althum has become an important pillar of Temporada de Música do Instituto Superior Técnico,

resulting in a significant number of concerts in the São Vicente de Fora church.

“Another aspect we have tried to stick to is the strong connection with artists who are former Técnico students”, points out the DM teacher.

The conviction underlying the concept has led to an increase in the number of editions, and although turn-out is not always huge, the main objective has always been supplanted. “The idea is to create culture with the stamp of Técnico, but above all to reinforce our mission of training the universal Man,” stresses Professor Henrique Oliveira. “It is also a way of offering Lisbon and the whole country cultural activities, since offering pure culture is also part of Técnico’s mission,” he adds.

With the years passing, some limitations were imposed on the initial project, as Professor Henrique Oliveira explains: “the budget for these activities was reduced, which made it difficult to keep the spectacularity of things, even though we have always tried to maintain quality.”

Thus, and as demanded by engineering as such, the future of this initiative comprises two stages: the preservation of excellence and the search for innovation. “We have been thinking about making room for other styles in the Seasons, although classical music will continue to be our focus, because it is less accessible and we believe that these concerts can also form new audiences,” says the DM teacher. For now, one thing is certain: “up to the present, there were lot of beautiful things in these Seasons. A number of outstanding musical moments were provided

by Técnico and this is very gratifying”, says Professor Henrique Oliveira. •

Once the idea was planted, as well as the desire to carry it out, it was necessary to orchestrate a great start to imbue this initiative with meaning and future. “We launched an experimental mini-Season, with three concerts only, and one of them included Monteverdi’s Vespers. It was an extraordinary world-class concert: we brought in the best early music soloists,

PT Um amor, duas personagens, uma vida recordada a partir de duas cadeiras que baloiçam à velocidade da memória. A clarear o momento — feito de tantos outros —, a luz suficiente para confirmar as emoções que nos chegam pela entoação das palavras. Um guião intenso feito do que importa e do que marcou, do que resta e do que gostaríamos de levar. É com isto — e muito mais — que a peça Judith - o amor aos 80, apresentada pelo Grupo de Teatro da Associação do Pessoal do Instituto Superior Técnico (APIST) — Espect-Actor Teatro —, agarra, desde o primeiro momento, a audiência. Durante uma hora, a viagem é longa — e nem sempre feliz — e as paragens, ainda que parte de uma única história, tocam a todos.

Os 80 anos de Judith e António — personagens principais e únicas da peça — exigem uma maturidade facial que Dina Moreira e Sérgio Mendes, os atores que lhes dão vida, não detêm. É nesse momento que os talentos escondidos e o trabalho de casa de alguns elementos do grupo fazem a diferença. Com todo o cuidado e muito latex à mistura, Anabela Arenga, funcionária do Técnico, trata de criar as rugas que ajuda-

rão a contar a história. “É um grupo que vive muito do esforço individual, dos talentos que já tínhamos ou que vamos descobrindo e aperfeiçoando em prol da equipa”, destaca Sérgio Mendes, funcionário da escola, que, além de ator, é encenador do grupo e autor da peça. Não são momentos menos importantes os que se vivem antes da peça — bem pelo contrário, uma vez que é entre um e outro detalhe de caraterização que se limam arestas, e se revêm deixas, texto e expetativas.

Quando faltam menos de dez minutos para a entrada em cena, é em círculo e de mãos dadas que se afastam os medos, se respira fundo e se decalca a confiança.

“Vamos arrasar e vamos acima de tudo divertir-nos”, decreta com toda a convicção o encenador, e os abraços que se seguem — de todos com todos — declaram a certeza de que só pode ser assim.

Apesar de só dois elementos subirem a palco nesta peça, são onze os que compõem o grupo — e se uns se dedicam exclusivamente às questões técnicas que também contribuem para o espetáculo, a

maior parte assume sempre vários papéis na dinâmica do grupo. Criado em 2003, o Espect-Actor Teatro já foi exclusivamente um grupo composto por funcionários do Técnico, mas hoje em dia acolhe também outros talentos. “Se me perguntarem se eu gostava de ter mais pessoas do Técnico, é óbvio que sim. Mas a verdade é que, em momentos em que não tínhamos muita gente, apareceram pessoas disponíveis e com talento, que queriam integrar o grupo e nós só podíamos aceitar”, explica Sérgio Mendes. Quando questionado sobre o porquê de não haver mais elementos do Técnico, o encenador é perentório: “fazer parte de um grupo amador com a nossa qualidade exige um esforço suplementar, exige trabalho e mais horas no Técnico, não é uma escolha fácil, e quem está disposto a fazê-la, fá-lo por amor.”

Depois de ver — e sentir — a peça, é estranho assimilar a excelência que transpira à nem sempre justa qualidade de grupo amador, porque, se há pequenos detalhes a aprimorar, esses rapidamente são ultrapassados pela intensidade dos atos, pela entrega dos atores e pela sensação a que nos

EN One love, two characters, a whole life remembered from two chairs swinging at the speed of memory. The moment — com-

prising so many others — sheds enough light to confirm the emotions coming from the intonation of words. An intense script made up of the things that matter — the things that have marked us, the things that remain, the things we would like to carry with us. It is with this, and much more, that the play Judith - Love at 80, staged by the Drama Group of the IST Staff Association (APIST) — Espect-Actor Teatro —, grabs the audience from the very beginning. The one-hour long journey is lengthy — and not always happy — and the pauses, although part of a single story, move everyone.

The 80 years of Judith and António — the play’s only characters — require a facial maturity that actors Dina Moreira and Sérgio Mendes do not have. That is where the hidden talent and hard work of some of the group’s members make a difference.

With the utmost care and plenty of latex, IST employee Anabela Arenga creates the wrinkles that will help tell the story. “This is a group that depends a lot on individual effort, on the talents we already had or which we discover and improve for the

transportam. “Pessoalmente, penso que, a nível de performance e nível de produção, já não nos consideramos assim tão amadores, estamos num limbo entre o amador e o profissional”, vinca Sérgio Mendes, confessando a exigência que todos os membros impõem a si mesmos.

A sala esteve quase sempre envolta num silêncio que falava por si. Ao abraço que nos obriga a despedir de António e Judith, seguem-se exímios segundos de silêncio, calados pelo aplauso do público. “Se o aplauso é gratificante e tem de ser respeitado, porque é um manifesto do público, mais compensador ainda é a sensação de missão cumprida, de que alcançamos o espetador”, denota Sérgio Mendes. “O ator faz as palavras do autor suas, transmite-as e faz com que o público se reveja naquelas personagens e muitas vezes altere comportamentos mediante o que viu”, acrescenta o encenador. E é na arte e subtileza com que o fazem que está a magia do teatro. •

No less important are the moments before the play — quite the opposite, as it is between makeup details that some things are polished up and text lines and expectations are reviewed.

Less than ten minutes before the curtain draws, the group gathers in a circle, holds hands and takes a deep breath, leaving fear behind and building up confidence. “We’re gonna nail it and, better yet, we’re gonna have a good time,” the director confidently determines. The following embraces — from everyone to everyone — confirm the conviction that it can only be so.

Although only two people take to the stage in this play, the group comprises eleven members. And if some focus exclusively on technical aspects — which are equally important to the show —, most take on several roles in the group’s dynamics. Created in 2003, Espect-Actor Teatro was once a group exclusively made up of IST staff, but nowadays it also embraces outside talent. “If you ask me if I’d like to have more people from Técnico, the answer would be yes, of course. But when we were short on members, some talented people came up who wanted to join the group and we gladly welcomed them,” Sergio Mendes says. Asked why there are no more members from Técnico, the group’s director is categorical: “Being part of an amateur group with our quality requires an extra effort — it means work and more hours at Técnico. It’s not an easy choice, and those who are willing to do it, do it out of love.”

After watching — and feeling — the play, one gets the impression that the sometimes unfair status of an amateur group does not do justice to the excellence that transpires; although there are small details to be improved, these are quickly overcome by the intensity of the performance, the dedication of the actors, and the feelings they convey. “I personally think that in terms of performance and production—, we no longer consider ourselves amateurs, we’re more in a limbo between amateurs and professionals,” says Mendes, mentioning on how much all members demand from themselves.

The room was almost always wrapped in a silence that spoke for itself. The embrace that makes us say goodbye to António and Judith is followed by long seconds of silence, hushed by the applause from the audience. “Although the applause is gratifying and worthy of respect because it is a manifesto from the audience, the sense of mission accomplished, of having reached the audience, is even more rewarding,” says Sérgio Mendes. “Actors deliver the playwright’s words as if they were their own, they make the audience relate to those characters and even change their behaviour because of what they saw,” the stage director adds. And the magic of theatre lies in the art and subtlety it is all done with. •

É autor do livro “ ist”, considerado por Alexandre Pomar como “o mais admirável livro de fotografia publicado em Portugal desde que, em 1959, Victor Palla e Costa Martins fizeram Lisboa, Cidade Triste e Alegre”.

Para a Valores Próprios escolhe esta fotografia, que pertence a uma série de nove fotografias intitulada Marta, apresentada pela primeira — e única — vez na exposição individual Crystal Clear, no Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Elvas, em outubro de 2016, e que espelha bem o seu estilo.

This photo he has chosen for Valores Próprios is part of a series of nine photographs titled Marta. It was displayed only once, as part of the individual exhibition Crystal Clear, held at the Elvas Contemporary Art Museum in October 2016, and it is an excellent example of his style.

PT Criatividade, o ponto de partida da arte e da ciência. Curiosidade, persistência, talento e dedicação, traços comuns de quem faz Ciência e Engenharia, mas também de quem dá cartas nas artes. Leonardo Da Vinci é o mais sonante exemplo de como ambas podem, tantas vezes, cruzar-se, e de como um génio não pode despojar-se da imaginação para dar novas cores ao conhecimento. O talento não é um circuito fechado, e do cruzamento entre áreas só pode resultar aprendizagem e satisfação, como provam os alumni que protagonizam este artigo.

A música foi a primeira paixão do professor Nuno Maulide, docente na Universidade de Viena e recentemente eleito “Cientista do Ano” na Áustria. A justificar a honrosa distinção, está o trabalho excecional que tem feito na área de química orgânica, a sua segunda paixão. O antigo aluno do Técnico chegou mesmo a frequentar o Curso Geral de Piano no Instituto Gregoriano de Lisboa, e o primeiro ano do Curso Superior de Piano da Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa, mas “a vontade de uma carreira artística acabou por ser suplantada pela vontade de seguir uma via de

estudos focada nas ciências da natureza”, partilha. “Ainda hoje penso que [a música] será talvez a minha ‘vocação’ inata. No entanto, a carreira de músico profissional é uma via complexa e repleta de dificuldades”, salienta de seguida.

Ainda que a música não tenha feito carreira na vida do professor Nuno Maulide, também não foi colocada de lado, e está presente no seu dia-a-dia. Ciente das afinidades entre a Arte e Ciência, o docente acredita que “a distinção entre ambas é puramente artificial.” Por isso mesmo, e aliando o útil ao agradável, a música é hoje um canal que usa para fazer a ciência chegar à sociedade. “A minha atividade pianística atualmente está mais centrada nos concertos/palestras em que falo sobre as semelhanças entre a Química e a Música e ilustro com exemplos ao piano. É um formato muito pouco usual, mas que parece resultar muito bem, a avaliar pela reação do público”, sublinha.

Para o professor Mário Figueiredo, docente do Técnico e um dos académicos mais citados a nível mundial na área de machine learning e processamento de imagem, a fotografia é um

of study focused on the natural sciences,” he says. “Still today, I believe that it [music] is perhaps my innate ‘vocation.’ However, a career as a professional musician is a complex and difficult path,” he adds right after.

Although music has not resulted in a career in Professor Nuno Maulide’s life, it has not been set aside and is present in his daily life. Aware of the affinities between the arts and science, the professor believes that “the distinction between the two is purely artificial.” For that reason, and combining business and pleasure, today, music is a

channel he uses for science to reach society.

“My piano activity today is more focused on concerts or lectures where I talk about the similarities between chemistry and music and illustrate it with piano examples. It is a very unusual format, but one that seems to work very well, judging by the reaction of the public,” he highlights.

For Professor Mário Figueiredo, professor at Técnico and one of the most cited academics in the world in machine learning and image processing research, photography is a hobby, so he takes it lightly.

Music was the first passion of Professor Nuno Maulide, a lecturer at the University of Vienna who was recently named “Scientist of the Year” in Austria. Justifying this honourable distinction is the exceptional work he has done in the area of organic chemistry, his second passion. In fact, the former Técnico student attended the General Piano course at the Instituto Gregoriano de Lisboa and the first year of the Higher Piano course in the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa, but “the desire for an artistic career was eventually superseded by the will to pursue a path

PT hobbie, pelo que lhe atribui a leveza que estes devem ter. “Quando fotografo, tento não ser muito técnico, tento que seja algo mais emocional”, partilha o docente. Gosta de fotografar pessoas a fazer coisas, mas também não esconde o fascínio pela fotografia abstrata de objetos. Como qualquer bom amante de fotografia, não deixa escapar um momento com a luz certa, como aliás aconteceu com a última fotografia que tirou, uns dias antes da entrevista que nos concedeu. “Vinha a pé da Rua de D. Estefânia, deparei-me com uma luz bonita junto à estatua do poeta Cesário Verde, e aproveitei para tirar umas fotografias”, relembra. Quando o questionamos acerca da sua fotografia preferida, a resposta vem no plural: “Há fotografias de música que fiz e de que gosto muito, mas há um projeto que fiz numa fábrica metalúrgica no Vietname de que me orgulho muito”.

Adepto da fotografia capaz de contar histórias, da espontaneidade dos retratos, do preto e branco e do potencial inerente ao digital, não torce o nariz à edição, porque, como assume, sem hesitar, “para mim, o que importa é o resultado”. Afinal, e como aponta, citando Edwin Smith, “a fotografia é uma forma de prestar tributo ao mundo visual.” “Dá-me um gosto especial registar determinados momentos, prestar tributo àquela imagem, guardá-la numa fotografia”, declara.

“Na casa dos meus pais existiam várias máquinas fotográficas, que me causavam curiosidade. Não me lembro de como comecei a fazer fotografias, mas, a dada altura, criei uma rotina de fotografar, (…) e quando esgotava o filme ia à loja perto da nossa casa e esperava pela revelação”, recorda Augusto Alves da Silva, conceituado fotógrafo e antigo aluno da escola. O ingresso no curso de Engenharia Civil não foi uma escolha própria, mas sim um desejo do pai, no entanto foram muitas as lições que retirou dessa passagem. “O Técnico obrigou-me a raciocinar de um modo que não teria acontecido numa escola de artes e isso foi muito positivo”.

Ciente de que o seu caminho era a fotografia, no terceiro ano do curso comunicou ao pai que iria prosseguir o sonho de sempre.

Em 1986, rumava a Londres para consolidar o talento que lhe era inato, no London College of Printing, e, mais tarde, na Slade School of Fine Art. A recetividade nacional aos seus primeiros trabalhos não podia ter sido mais positiva, como lembra o próprio: “fiquei surpreendido pela forma extremamente positiva como os meus primeiros projetos foram recebidos pela crítica em Portugal.” “Fiz várias exposições em Londres, depois da Slade, nomeadamente na The Photographers’ Gallery e na Chisenhale Gallery”, lembra.

No seguimento de várias exposições bem-sucedidas, que foram tornando o nome de Augusto Alves da Silva cada vez mais sonante no mundo da fotografia, surgiu o

convite para fazer um livro e uma exposição tendo como foco o universo do Técnico. “Foi uma oportunidade com uma escala que se revelou única, até à data”, frisa o fotógrafo.

“Percebi de imediato que tinha uma oportunidade rara para poder trabalhar com total liberdade e ser respeitado”, sublinha ainda.

São muitos os caminhos que cruzam estas duas áreas e muitos os protagonistas que as abraçam com a mesma paixão, ainda que encontrando realizações distintas em cada uma delas. “Uma boa apresentação científica requer uma componente de performance, pensada para cativar e manter o interesse do público durante um período mais ou menos longo de tempo. Digam lá se não tem tudo a ver com um concerto de música?”, questiona de forma retórica o professor Nuno Maulide. É neste cruzamento de saberes que se conseguem ver e fazer coisas extraordinárias, e que se torna mais simples interpretar e explorar o mundo. •

He believes in storytelling photography, the spontaneity of portraits, black and white, the inherent potential of digital, and he will not say no to editing either, because he unhesitatingly assumes that: “for me, what matters, in the end, is the result.” After all, as he points out, quoting Edwin Smith, “photography is a way of paying tribute to the visual world.” “For me, it feels special to record certain moments, to pay tribute to that image, to record it in a photograph,” he says.

“In my parents’ house, there were several cameras, which made me curious. I do not remember how I started taking photos, but at some point, I made a routine of it, (…) and, when the film was over, I would go to the store near our house and wait for it to be developed,” recalls Augusto Alves da Silva, a renowned photographer and former Técnico student. Entering the Civil Engineering course was not his own choice, but his

father’s wish; however, many lessons were learned in that journey. “Técnico forced me to think in a way that I would not have done in art school, and that was very positive.”

Aware that his path was photography, in the third year of the course, he told his father that he would pursue his dream. In 1986, he headed to London to foster his innate talent at the London College of Printing, and later at the Slade School of Fine Art. National receptivity to his early works could not have been more positive, as he recalls: “I was surprised by the extremely positive way my first projects were received by critics in Portugal.” “I did several exhibitions in London after Slade, namely, at The Photographers’ Gallery and at Chisenhale Gallery,” he recalls.

Following several successful exhibitions that made the name of Augusto Alves da Silva increasingly famous in the world of photography, came the invitation to create a book and an exhibition focusing on the world of Técnico. “It was an opportunity with a scale that has proved unique to date,” says the photographer. “I immediately realised that I had a rare opportunity to be able to work freely and to be respected,” he says. After more than a year of work, the result was the book ist (from the German Was ist das?). Years after the publication of the book, the author states that “ist could have been made elsewhere and at another time.” “Ist is also about work. Any kind of work,” he says.

These two areas intersect in many ways, and several people embrace them with the same passion, although obtaining different kinds of fulfilment. “Every good scientific presentation requires a performance element to captivate and maintain the interest of the public for a certain period of time.

Isn’t this like a music concert?” — Prof.

Nuno Maulide rhetorically asks. It is at this intersection of forms of knowledge that one can see and do extraordinary things, making it easier to interpret and explore the world. •

EN “When I take a photo I try not to be very technical, I try to make it something more emotional,” he shares. He likes to photograph people doing things, but he doesn’t hide his fascination with abstract object photography. Like any good photography lover, he doesn’t miss that fleeting moment when the light is just right; as it was with the last photograph he took a few days before the interview he granted us. “I was walking from Rua de Dona Estefânia when I came across a beautiful light next to the statue of the poet Cesário Verde and took the chance to take some photos,” he recalls. When we ask him about his favourite photograph, the answer comes in the plural: “There are music photographs I have taken that I like very much, but there is a project I did at a metallurgy factory in Vietnam that I am very proud of.”

PT Comecemos por uma das suas primeiras paixões, a ópera, que começou a apreciar com apenas quatro anos. Foram os seus pais que o contagiaram com esta paixão?

Os meus pais gostavam de ópera, mas não eram de todo tão fanáticos como eu me tornei logo em miúdo. A ópera foi uma revelação para mim, quer do ponto de vista musical, quer do ponto de vista teatral.

Era isso que o atraía mais na ópera… a parte teatral?

Sim, essencialmente… o ritual é apaixonante. Não posso viver sem ver teatro.

Em Portugal já não há, a meu ver, teatro capaz, e por isso uma das minhas preocupações quando viajo é ver teatro. Faço-o principalmente em Inglaterra, porque é lá que há o melhor teatro do mundo. Não foi por acaso que Shakespeare nasceu em Inglaterra — e ele é o maior escritor que ja-

mais existiu em qualquer língua e nunca haverá outro maior. Isto para mim é um ponto de fé. Lembro-me de que às vezes os meus estudantes vinham falar comigo sobre problemas pessoais e recomendava-lhes sempre que lessem determinada peça de Shakespeare, porque lá encontrariam a resposta para todas as coisas.

Portanto, também tentava incutir nos seus alunos essa paixão pela cultura?

Por vezes, para explicar determinadas coisas, e para tornar os temas mais apelativos, mostrava as relações que os conceitos científicos tinham com outros, noutras áreas, como a literatura, a pintura ou a música. Essa mistura, para mim, sempre foi muito importante, porque não há grandes diferenças entre a Ciência e a Arte, talvez apenas nos critérios de avaliação das mesmas: o verdadeiro e o falso, o bonito e o feio, o que perturba ou nos deixa indiferente.

So you were also trying to instil in your students this passion for culture?

Sometimes, in order to explain certain things and render the subjects more appealing, I demonstrated the relationships between certain scientific concepts and other concepts in areas such as literature, painting or music. For me, that mix has always been very important because there are no great differences between science and art, other than perhaps in their evaluation criteria: true and false, beautiful and ugly, that which moves us or leaves us indifferent.

Was that what drew you most to opera, the theatrical part?

Yes, essentially... the ritual is enthralling.

I cannot live without going to the theatre.

In Portugal, in my view, there is no proper theatre anymore, and so one of my concerns when I travel is to attend theatre shows. I do so mainly in England because it is where the best theatre in the world is made. Shakespeare was not born in England by chance — and he is the greatest writer ever in any language and there will never be a greater one. There’s no argument on that as far as I’m concerned. I remember that sometimes my students came to talk to me about their personal problems, and I always recommended a certain play by Shakespeare because they could find the answer to everything there.

This is why it people say that a teacher must also be an actor...

Yes, in order to convince others… But I do not say that we have to be actors in the sense of lying or selling mutton as lamb. A great actor is one who remains true to life, who makes us aknowledge the reality in what he is saying and doing.

EN Let’s start with one of your first passions, opera, which you began to appreciate from about the age of four.

Did your parents pass this passion on to you?

My parents liked opera, but they were not fanatic like I soon became as a child. Opera was a revelation to me both from the musical and theatrical points of view.

PT É por isso que costuma dizer que um professor tem de ser também ator…

Sim, para convencer… Atenção: não digo que tenhamos de ser atores no sentido de aldrabar as coisas ou vender gato por lebre.

Um grande ator é aquele que é verdadeiro em relação à vida, aquele que nos faz reconhecer a realidade naquilo que está a dizer e a fazer. Lembro-me de que, uma vez, fui ver uma peça de Tchekov no Teatro Nacional em Londres, As Três Irmãs, que até já tinha visto em Lisboa; o primeiro ato era tão bom do ponto de vista de encenação, de interpretação, etc., que eu saí no intervalo porque não me sentia emocionalmente capaz de aguentar o resto da peça. Voltei uma semana mais tarde para ver tudo. Portanto, quando digo que o bom professor tem de ser um ator, quero dizer que tem de ser verdadeiro, prender a atenção dos alunos e convencê-los. Acho que enquanto professor conseguia isso… (sorri)

Como é que um jovem que adora ópera, teatro, pintura, e cuja nota mais alta foi em História, acaba por vir para Engenharia?

Eu nunca tive dúvidas de que queria ser cientista. O meu pai era professor de Matemática de liceu, e lembro-me de que quando aprendi a noção de número primo, ainda na escola primária, ele demonstrou-me o famoso teorema de Euclides de que a sucessão de números primos era ilimitada…

Nessa noite, não dormi, porque achei aquilo uma coisa lindíssima, o rasgo de imaginação que possibilitava a demonstração era impressionante. Essa beleza da matemática, e depois da física, sempre me fascinou, e era isso que me fazia, desde que me lembro, querer ser cientista. A ciência começa por ser bonita e atraente, e só depois é que se torna complicada.

A fotografia é outra das suas grandes paixões, e uma das áreas em que tem deixado a sua marca, principalmente na divulgação do trabalho que é feito em Portugal. Fotografar e admirar fotografia são para si “uma forma de viajar”?

Nunca concordei muito com aquela ideia de que fotografar é matar — a ideia de que, ao fotografar, estamos a congelar o tempo, a guardar apenas um instante. Pelo contrário, para mim, a fotografia é uma forma de prolongar a vida, de atingir a eternidade. É uma forma de viajar no tempo e no espaço.

O verdadeiro cientista é aquele que está sempre a duvidar das suas ideias, a questionar tudo o que o rodeia, a procurar inspiração em todo o lado.

A cultura pode ajudar?

Sim, sem dúvida. Facilita imenso o raciocínio e a criatividade. Nós inovamos por ver e reconhecer as semelhanças entre coisas diferentes. No fundo, esse é o grande objetivo da ciência: unificar o conhecimento. A semelhança entre as coisas é a base da ciência. A cultura está em tudo isto. A ciência é uma forma de cultura.

E a escrita funciona como uma forma de explicar isso?

Para mim, escrever é fundamental para arrumar as ideias. Dei, anos a fio, as mesmas matérias, mas precisava de ter meia hora, pelo menos, para preparar as aulas por escrito. Por outro lado, tive a oportunidade de ter uma vida boa, de ver muitas coisas bonitas, de viver e aperceber-me de coisas extraordinárias, e a escrita é uma forma de partilhar isso com os outros, com amigos ou com o público.

Partilha da opinião de que o mal da cultura europeia é não haver gente nova com ideias novas — a fazer cultura, ou a liderar as instituições que promovem a cultura?

As duas coisas. Acho que há uma falta de criatividade latente. Há em Portugal, e na maior parte dos países europeus, o vício de ir sempre buscar os mesmos para as mesmas coisas. Falta rejuvenescimento e renovação de pessoas e ideias, na política como nas artes.

Uma das críticas tecidas aos cientistas é que são muito fechados na sua redoma de conhecimento. Considera importante que os cientistas estejam cada vez mais predispostos a levar a ciência a palco?

Salvo raras exceções, só os maus cientistas é que são fechados. Toda a ciência, até a mais avançada, pode ser explicada a qualquer pessoa. Acredito que, se um cientista é bom e gosta daquilo que faz, então quer partilhar a sua ciência com os outros, assim como um pintor gosta de mostrar a sua arte ou um escritor de publicar livros.

Obviamente que há pessoas para quem isto é difícil: criam boa Ciência, mas são extremamente tímidas, e simplesmente não gostam, nem sabem como comunicar com o público leigo. No entanto, também há em Portugal e no estrangeiro muitos cientistas que, para se dar ares de importância, falam uma linguagem esotérica e difícil. Se estamos a contribuir para o avanço da Ciência, temos de sentir a necessidade de partilhar os nossos conhecimentos com os outros; e se não sentimos essa urgência, é porque não estamos a criar boa Ciência. •

Photography is another of your great passions, and one of the areas in which you have left your mark, mainly by spreading the work currently being made in Portugal. Is photographing and admiring photography a “way of traveling” for you?

I never quite agreed with the idea that photographing is just like killing; the idea that when photographing we are freezing time, to save just an instant. On the contrary, for me photography is a way of prolonging life, of reaching eternity. It is a way of traveling in time and space.

The real scientist is one who is always questioning his ideas, as well as everything around him, seeking inspiration everywhere.

Can culture help?

Yes, of course. It makes thinking and creativity easier. We innovate by seeing and recognising the similarities between different things. Basically, this is the great goal of science: to unify knowledge. The similarity between things is the basis of science.

Culture is in all of this. Science is a form of culture.

And writing is a means to explain it all?

For me, writing is fundamental to organise my ideas. I lectured the same topics for years, but I needed at least half an hour to prepare my classes in writing. On the other hand, I have had the opportunity to enjoy

You are of the opinion that the problem with the European culture is that there are no new people and thus no new ideas. Do you mean culture makers or the leading the institutions that promote culture?

Both. I think there is a lack of latent creativity. In Portugal and in most European countries people always seek the same old for the same old things. We do lack rejuvenation and new people and ideas, both in politics and in the arts.

One of the criticisms thrown at scientists is that they are very enclosed in their dome of knowledge. Do you think it is important that scientists are increasingly predisposed to take science to the masses?

With rare exceptions, only bad scientists close themselves off. All science, even the most advanced, can be explained to anyone. I believe that if a scientist is good and likes what he does then he wants to share his science with others, just as a painter likes to show his art or a writer publishes books.

Obviously there are people for whom this is difficult: they create good science but are extremely shy, and simply do not like or even know how to communicate with the lay public. However, there are also many scientists in Portugal and abroad, who, to give themselves an air of importance, speak an esoteric and difficult language. If we are to contribute to the advancement of science we must feel the need to share our knowledge with others; if we do not feel this urgency, then we are not making good science. •

How does a young man who loves opera, theatre and painting, and whose best subject was history, end up in Engineering?

I never doubted that I wanted to be a scientist. My father was a high school maths teacher and I remember that when I learned about prime numbers, still in primary school, he introduced me to the famous Euclid’s theorem that the succession of prime numbers is infinite… That night I did not sleep because I thought that was such a beautiful thing, the imagination that made that demonstration possible was so impressive. This beauty of mathematics, and then of physics, has always fascinated me and that is what made me, for as long as I can remember, want to be a scientist.

Science begins by being beautiful and attractive and only then does it become complex.

a good life, to see many beautiful things, to live ands perceive extraordinary things, and writing is a way to share this with others, be it friends or the general public.

EN I remember going to see a play by Chekhov at the National Theatre in London, The Three Sisters, which I had already seen in Lisbon. The first act was so good in terms of staging, acting, etc., that I left during the break because I did not feel emotionally ready to cope with the rest of the play. I came back a week later to watch the whole thing. And so when I say that a good teacher has to be an actor, I mean that he also has to be true, to hold students’ attention and convince them. I think as a teacher I was able to do so… (smiles)

PT“Segadinhas, segadinhas, já lá vão, ai”. O ditongo faz parte da letra, mas neste caso saiu espontaneamente e numa espécie de auto-reprimenda da boca de um dos elementos que compõem o Grupo de Cantares Tradicionais do Instituto Superior Técnico. O ensaio está a ser desafiante, como habitual. O maestro Luís Sanfins, aluno do mestrado de Engenharia Química, lançou o desafio de cantar a música a duas vozes, e, ainda que conscientes da exigência do que lhes era proposto, ninguém fugiu ao compasso. Apuram-se os ouvidos, cravam-se atenções na pauta, ajustam-se notas e entoações. O engano de um redobra o trabalho de todos, e é com isso em mente que se parte para a tentativa seguinte. “Havemos de lá chegar”, vai lançando o maestro, em jeito de incentivo. Entre uma e outra estrofe, surgem as brincadeiras típicas de quem já trauteou muitas vezes lado a lado.

Já lá vão dezoito anos desde a fundação do grupo que atualmente integra a Associação Cultural de Música Tradicional do Instituto Superior Técnico (ACMTIST). Dos 23 elementos que participaram na fundação, apenas restam quatro. Delminda Carneiro, antiga funcionária do Técnico, é uma delas, e ainda se recorda do intuito que esteve na

génese do grupo: “queríamos manter vivas as tradições do antigamente.” A vontade mantém-se para lá dos anos e das renovações que o grupo foi sofrendo. “Fazemo-lo através de atuações de caráter social, de romarias ou em arraiais. Uma das nossas principais atividades, porém, é cantar as janeiras porta a porta”, partilha, orgulhosamente, Delminda Carneiro.

“Vim assistir a uma atuação do grupo, no âmbito de um dia aberto a novos membros, e fiquei entusiasmadíssima”, recorda a professora Ana Paula Flôr, docente do Departamento de Engenharia Civil, Arquitetura e Georrecursos. Adepta das tradições e crente do valor alocado à promoção da cultura portuguesa, encontrou no grupo o espírito, a dinâmica e o conhecimento necessários. “Passado este tempo todo, e com tudo o que tenho aprendido, consigo perceber que foi das melhores coisas que fiz por impulso”, confessa. O perfecionismo está-lhe expresso na dedicação e numa autocrítica, que é rapidamente contrariada pelos colegas: “tenho muito má memória auditiva, não canto muito bem, mas aprendi, entretanto, a tocar um instrumento, e isto foi já um dos ganhos de ter entrado no

grupo”, declara a docente, mostrando que o hábito e a dedicação fazem o monge — ou o cantor, neste caso. “Sou muito feliz aqui neste grupo”, faz questão de enfatizar.

Essa felicidade latente, acompanhada de mais uma boa dose de argumentos — sendo o mais irrefutável de todos a possibilidade de aprofundar o gosto pela música — transmitidos pela professora Ana Paula Flôr tornaram incontornável a chegada de Sónia Ildefonso, antiga aluna e ex-bolseira de investigação do Técnico, ao grupo. “Já tinha alguma formação em guitarra clássica e sempre gostei muito de música, mas quando vim estudar para o Técnico deixei de lado esse gosto”, relata a alumna. Desde o início do ano que aceitou o desafio e vem propositadamente ao Técnico todas as quintas-feiras para ensaiar. “É um esforço suplementar da minha parte, claro, mas é bom voltar à música e obviamente voltar ao Técnico”, fundamenta Sónia Ildefons. Mas não se fica por aí, e acrescenta: “aquilo que a música nos faz sentir e as emoções que nos desperta é uma das coisas que mais vale a pena, até para o nosso bem-estar diário.

Depois, a noção do grupo também é crucial, porque a música faz isto mesmo, une as pessoas em torno de algo.”

The diphthong is part of the lyrics, but in this case it emerged spontaneously, as a kind of self-reprimand, from the mouth of one of the members of the IST Traditional Singing Group. This is a challenging rehearsal, as usual. Maestro Luís Sanfins, a master’s student in Chemical Engineering, dared the group to sing a particular song in two voices. Knowing how demanding this is, no one misses a beat. With finely tuned

ears and eyes on the score, the group adjusts notes and intonations. One person’s mistake burdens everyone else, and it is with this in mind that they give it another shot. “We’ll get there,” the maestro says to encourage them. Between stanzas, the typical jokes of people who have been singing together for a good while.

The group — which now belongs to the IST Cultural Association for Traditional Music (ACMTIST) — was founded 18 years ago. Of the 23 original members, only four remain. Delminda Carneiro, a former IST

A meio do ensaio, muda-se a música, mas não a vontade. Desce-se uma oitava, contrariam-se “desafinanços”, acerta-se a passada, tudo em prol da história — aquela que se canta e dança por aqui. Ao maestro não lhe escapa nada, e assim tem de ser, uma vez que o objetivo de todos é “representar da melhor maneira o Técnico”. “Estamos inseridos nesta escola de excelência e tentamos fazer o nosso trabalho com essa mesma excelência”, assinala Luís Sanfins.

Inicia-se mais uma estrofe, e seja lá qual for o ritmo que ela tome, uma coisa é certa: que bem que soam nesta cadência de perseverança e orgulho na tradição, as típicas melodias portuguesas e as letras que contam épocas e regiões. •

And she remembers the group’s original goal: “We wanted to keep old traditions alive.” Despite the passage of time and the changes in the group’s composition, the goal remains the same. “We do it in social initiatives, religious events and folk festivities. But one of our main activities is to sing Janeiras from door to door,” Delminda Carneiro proudly says.

“I watched a performance by the group, as part of an open day for new members, and I was very excited,” says Prof. Ana Paula Flôr, a teacher at the Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture, and Georesources. A tradition buff and a firm believer in the importance of promoting Portuguese culture, she found in the group the necessary enthusiasm, dynamism, and knowledge. “After all this time, and with everything I have learned, I can say this was one of the best things I’ve ever done on impulse” she confesses. Her perfectionism translates into commitment and self-criticism, which is quickly contradicted by her colleagues: “I have terrible audio memory, I don’t sing particularly well, but I’ve learned to play an instrument and this is one of the major rewards of having joined the group,” she says, showing that dedication is a singer’s main asset. “I’m very happy about the group”, she adds.

Prof. Ana Paula Flôr’s happiness, along with many other arguments — the most irrefutable of which is the possibility of deepening her love of music —, brought Sónia Ildefonso, a former IST student and research fellow, to the group. “I already had some training in classical guitar and I’ve always liked music, but when I came to Técnico I put that passion aside,” the alumna says.

She accepted the challenge at the beginning of 2019, and she comes to Técnico every Thursday for the group’s rehearsals.

“It’s an extra effort for me, but it’s good to come back to music and, of course, to IST,” Sónia Ildefonso says. And she adds: “The things that music makes us feel and the emotions it awakens in us are one of the things that makes it all worthwhile — even for our daily well-being. The idea of a group is also crucial, because music does just that, it unites people around something.”

Halfway into rehearsal, the music changes, but not the enthusiasm. The group lowers an octave, out of tune moments are corrected, the pace is set right — all this in the name of history, the history that the group celebrates with its singing and dancing. The maestro does not miss a single detail, and that is how it must be, because the goal is to “represent Técnico in the best possible way”. “We are part of this excellent institution and we try to excel in what we do.” says Luís Sanfins.

Another stanza begins, and whatever rhythm it takes, one thing is certain: traditional Portuguese melodies and lyrics that tell of different eras and regions do sound delightful in this cadence of perseverance and pride in tradition. •

PT São artistas. Ponto! Não é preciso ouvi-los tocar, atentar-lhes o timbre ou vê-los manejar o utensílio com que desenham ou pintam, basta ouvir a forma como falam do que sentem ao fazê-lo. Está-lhes na alma, e há quem diga que é por lá que reside a arte. Inês Cabral, Francisco Aveiro, Carolina Veríssimo e Rodrigo Costa são estudantes de cursos diferentes do Técnico, mas com uma linguagem comum. Entendem-na como uma parte das suas matrizes, como uma valência que os acrescenta e uma medida que lhes permite abrir horizontes.

Um estudo de 2015, realizado pela Universidade de Helsínquia (Finlândia), corrobora a ideia de que ouvir música clássica, além de tranquilizante, melhora a aprendizagem e a memória. Não é, porém, este fundo científico que leva Inês Cabral, aluna de Engenharia Química, a tornar as melodias de Beethoven a banda sonora de eleição enquanto tenta entender cálculo diferencial ou absorver alguns conceitos de biologia molecular — é mesmo a sua química total para com estas melodias.

“Ouço sempre música clássica quando estou a estudar. É quase como se fosse um combustível para conseguir”, começa por afirmar a aluna. Desde pequena — pelo menos desde que se lembra — que a música faz parte da sua vida.

EN They are artists. Period! You don’t have to hear them play, or listen to their timbre, or watch them handle the instrument with which they draw or paint — you just need to hear them describe the way they feel when they are doing it. It is in their soul, and some say that is where art comes from. Inês Cabral, Francisco Aveiro, Carolina Veríssimo and Rodrigo Costa are taking different courses at Técnico, but they all have a common language — art. They believe art is part of who they are, a skill that enriches them and broadens their horizons.

A study conducted in 2015 by the University of Helsinki (Finland) argues that listening to classical music is not only soothing, but enhances learning and memory. But it is not because of such academic evidence that Inês Cabral, a Chemical Engineering student, chooses Beethoven’s melodies as her soundtrack while trying to understand differential calculus or assimilate some molecular biology concepts — it is just that her natural chemistry is naturally drawn to these melodies. “I always listen to classical music when I’m studying. It’s almost as if it were a fuel,” says the student.

Music has been part of her life ever since she can remember.

PT O conservatório, onde Inês Cabral aprofundou o gosto pelo piano e os seus conhecimentos ao nível do canto lírico, tornou-se um passo óbvio para explorar a paixão. Durante nove anos, afinou saberes na área musical, mas não descurou as metas académicas que já havia definido, e que passavam pela Engenharia. Hoje em dia, e já com o objetivo de entrar no Técnico atingido, continua a dividir o tempo entre a exigência do curso e o Coro Regina Coeli de Lisboa, onde é uma soprano realizada. “Fazer parte de um coro é ter a oportunidade de fazer música com várias pessoas e é incrível. A massa sonora que se houve é completamente diferente de estar a cantar a solo ou estar a tocar piano”, solta, com um ânimo que não deixa margem para dúvidas.

Também Francisco Aveiro, aluno de Engenharia Aeroespacial, entende a música clássica como um elemento essencial no seu método de estudo. Aliás, incorpora-a em todas as rotinas, e tenta até contagiar quem está ao seu redor com a playlist erudita. A música surgiu-lhe por acaso, mas foi ficando porque Francisco Aveiro assim fez questão. “Na escola primária, convidaram-me para me juntar a um grupo e assim que comecei a tocar braguinha [instrumento típico da Madeira] gostei imediatamente. Seguiu-se uma passagem pela tuna de cantares populares, e depois a entrada na banda filarmónica do concelho madeirense de onde é natural e na qual foi apresentado ao trombone. “A determinada altura, quis ir aprofundar a minha formação musical, e fiz seis anos de conservatório. Consegui o 6.º grau de trombone”, recorda o aluno de Engenharia Aeroespacial.

Na vinda para a faculdade, Francisco Aveiro decidiu deixar para trás o companheiro de aventuras musicais, e explica porquê: “achei que não teria oportunidade de explorar esse gosto no continente, e, além disso, sabia da exigência do Técnico e que teria de me focar”. O acaso — novamente — haveria de mostrar-lhe que

o gosto pela música não tem morada fixa.

“Ainda no meu primeiro ano, apareceu-me um post no Facebook que anunciava audições para a orquestra académica da Universidade, e que me chamou logo a atenção”, relembra. Sem hesitar, o jovem viajou até à Madeira para resgatar o trombone e poder fazer as audições.

Passados mais de três anos, continua na Orquestra Académica da Universidade de Lisboa, e não podia estar mais satisfeito por ter cedido ao “chamamento” da música.

“O melhor elogio que me podem fazer é dizerem que eu penso o mundo através da minha arte”, confidencia Carolina Veríssimo, aluna de Engenharia do Ambiente, e outra das jovens artistas do Técnico.

Sempre lhe disseram que tinha muito jeito para desenhar, e, apesar de gostar do que via no papel, Carolina Veríssimo preferia encarar este seu talento como um hobbie que poderia explorar quando quisesse.

Agora entende que, mais do que querer,

é algo que precisa de fazer. “No final do meu primeiro ano, comecei realmente a sentir que faltava algo para eu me sentir realizada”, conta. Decidiu voltar aos seus desenhos e os efeitos foram óbvios: “voltar a pintar e desenhar foi bom para a minha autoestima”, partilha. Fiel ao papel, adepta da aguarela e seguidora das linhas direitas, a artista usa o seu talento para falar de assuntos variados, como a sustentabilidade ou o consumismo. “Desenhar distrai-me, completa-me. Fico a fazê-lo durante horas a fio e sinto falta quando não desenho”, vinca.

Numa primeira aceção, o termo “pirografia” provoca alguma estranheza, rapidamente esquecida ao vislumbrar as obras que se criam nesta arte. Através de uma ponta de metal quente, e tendo por base um pedaço de madeira, é possível criar peças únicas e indeléveis, e é isso mesmo — a intemporalidade e o desafio inerentes a esta forma de arte — que fascina Rodrigo Costa, aluno de Engenharia do Ambiente. Desenhar sempre foi uma tarefa simples para o aluno do Técnico, tão fácil que, a certa altura, se tornou pouco estimulante. “Com o passar dos anos, passou a ser apenas um passatempo quando estava aborrecido”, refere o aluno. Mas algo mudou quando encontrou a pirografia: “a determinada altura, apercebi-me de que queria fazer algo diferente. Decidi que queria aumentar as minhas valências no desenho, mas com mais adrenalina à mistura”, declara. Depois de dezenas de vídeos e de uma ronda por lojas de materiais, Rodrigo Costa meteu mãos à obra. A identificação com a técnica foi imediata: “o óbvio seria começar com um quadrado, mas eu quis começar a sério. Demorei uns cinco dias a fazer a minha primeira obra, mas o resultado final foi um samurai espetacular”, conta, vaidoso.

O traço minucioso que desafia, o facto de não poder ser apagado, a “mão de cirurgião” que teve que aprender a ter, e o facto de ainda ser uma técnica praticada por poucos, principalmente em Portugal, incitam Rodrigo Costa a aprimorar e investir neste talento. A divulgação dos seus trabalhos no Instagram despoletou as encomendas, o que exige do aluno do Técnico um investimento suplementar. “Como é algo que eu gosto de fazer, é tempo útil”, declara o pirógrafo.

“A disciplina e o rigor da música, de certa forma, dão-nos algumas capacidades interpessoais, nomeadamente capacidade de adaptação, a criatividade e o à-vontade em publico”, frisa Inês Cabral. A ideia da versatilidade que a arte acrescenta é corroborada pelos outros jovens artistas. Os planos que têm para o futuro são muitos, e não têm

For nine years, she improved her knowledge of music, but she did not neglect the academic goals she had already set for herself — which included Engineering. Nowadays, and with the goal of becoming an IST student on her achievements list, she continues to split her time between her academic studies and the Lisbon Regina Coeli Choir, where she is an accomplished soprano. “Being in a choir means having the opportunity to make music with several people, and it’s amazing. The sound mass you hear is completely different from singing solo or playing the piano,” she enthusiastically says.

Francisco Aveiro, an Aerospace Engineering student, also believes classical music is an essential part of his study method.

In fact, he incorporates it in all his routines and even tries to convince those around him to give his erudite playlist a chance. Music came into his life by chance, but it stayed on because Francisco Aveiro wanted it to. “In elementary school someone invited me to join a band, and as soon as I started playing the “braguinha” [a traditional instrument from Madeira], I liked it.” He then joined a folk songs group and played the trombone in the philharmonic band of the county in Madeira where he was born. “At some point I wanted to deepen my musical education, so I spent six years at a music academy. I obtained the 6th degree for trombone,” recalls the Aerospace Engineering student.

When he came to the IST, Francisco Aveiro decided to leave his instrument behind: “I thought I wouldn’t have the chance to explore this passion in mainland Portugal, and I also knew that IST is very de-

manding and that I would have to focus.”

Chance would show him — again — that the love of music has no fixed address. “On my very first year, I saw a post on Facebook announcing auditions for the university’s academic orchestra, and it caught my attention right away,” he recalls. Without hesitation, the young man traveled back to Madeira to rescue his trombone so he could do the auditions. More than three years later, he is still a member of the Lisbon University Academic Orchestra, and he could not be happier about his decision to follow his musical calling.

“The best compliment you can give me is to say that I see the world through my art,” says Carolina Veríssimo, an Environmental Engineering student and another young artist at Técnico. People have always told her she had a knack for drawing, and although she liked her work, Carolina Veríssimo preferred to regard this talent as a hobby she could explore whenever she wanted to. Now she understands it is something she needs to do. “At the end of my first year, I actually began to feel that something was missing,” she says. She decided to revive her talents and the results were clear: “Going back to painting and drawing was good for my self-esteem.” Loyal to paper and a fan of watercolours and straight lines, the artist uses her talent to reflect on various subjects, such as sustainability and consumerism. “Sketching distracts me, it completes me. I do it for hours on end, and I really miss it when I’m not doing it,” she says.

The word “pyrography” may sound strange at first, but such strangeness is quickly forgotten as soon as one gets a glimpse of the works of art created through this technique. Using a hot metal tip and a piece of wood, it is possible to create unique and indelible pieces, and it is this — the timelessness and the challenge inherent to this art — that fascinates Environmental Engineering student Rodrigo Costa. Drawing has always been a simple task for this IST student, so easy that it became less than

como destino o mundo artístico, porque a arte é uma certeza, não uma meta. “Nunca vou deixar de tocar, isso é uma certeza absoluta que tenho”, assinala Francisco Aveiro. “Na minha casa, haverá sempre algo para desenhar, nem que seja uma parede para rabiscar”, aponta, por sua vez, Rodrigo Costa. •

But something changed when he discovered pyrography: “At some point I realised that I wanted to do something different. I decided that I wanted to expand my drawing skills, but with more adrenaline in the mix,” he says. After dozens of videos and a shopping spree for materials, Rodrigo Costa got down to business. He immediately fell in love with the technique: “Starting with a square would be the most obvious choice, but I wanted something a little more challenging. It took me about five days to complete my first work, but the end result was a spectacular samurai,” Rodrigo Costa proudly says.

The challenge of these meticulous lines, the fact that they cannot be erased, the “surgeon’s touch” he had to acquire, and the fact that this technique is only used by a few artists, especially in Portugal, prompted Rodrigo Costa to improve and invest in this talent. Sharing his works on Instagram resulted in many commissions, which requires an extra effort. It’s something I enjoy doing, so it’s time well-spent,” the pyrographer says.

“In a way, the discipline and rigor of music provide us with some interpersonal skills, in particular the ability to adapt to different situations, creativity, and feeling comfortable before an audience,” says Inês Cabral. The other young artists confirm the idea that art gives them versatility. They have many plans for the future, but the art world is not a goal: art is a certainty, not a target. “I’ll never stop playing, that much I know,” says Francisco Aveiro. “There will always be something to draw in at my place, even if it’s a wall to scribble,” Rodrigo Costa argues. •

EN “I think I’ve always been passionate about creating something: painting, programming, musical creation and works of art. Music has always been the kind of art I like the most, because it is something that can radically transform any moment of your life.”
