Cancer care at every stage EEO/AA Employer

Kristina recently lost her mother to lung cancer, and was terrified to learn she too had a malignant mass in her lung. She turned to Allegiance for help. To Kristina’s relief, surgeon Mohan Kulkarni, MD, was able to completely remove the cancer before it spread beyond her lung. Kristina is now back to an active life. “The level of care and support I received at Allegiance was phenomenal. I wouldn’t go anywhere else,” Kristina says.

S

Associate Professor of Leadership, Graduate College

iena Heights University (SHU) has a variety of graduate programs to offer to interested students. One of their most versatile is their Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership Program, which supplies graduates with leadership skills they can apply to any field or position. The main focus of the program is to provide students with the tools they need to succeed well beyond the classroom, and the desired skills to excel in real-world situations. David Lucas, Associate Professor of Organizational Leadership at Siena Heights Graduate College, has a goal to develop and deliver world-class courses to graduate students. He says a master’s degree is proof that you know what you’re talking about when somebody asks you to do a particular job at your place of employment. “A master’s degree gives you advanced techniques, and a better understanding of how leaders utilize information,” Lucas said. “I would search for, and hire individuals in the business world who had that background.” SHU’s Organizational Leadership Program goes farther than a MBA, by training students how to professionally practice business. “We teach how to team and innovate, within numerous organizational structures” Lucas said. “It’s not enough to make a really great presentation, you have to convince your audience the information has value and is applicable to the organization.” Lucas says a master’s degree in Organizational Leadership is more than worth it in this changing economy. “I think having a master’s increases your personal stock and worth in an organization,” Lucas said. “I know from

28

James LOUGHRAN Associate Professor of Leadership, Graduate College interviewing and hiring thousands of students in the business world it’s something we looked for, because it revealed background knowledge of values we could translate into positive contributions to the organization. It’s a difference between knowing the information, and being able to use that information, being able to write a report and convincing everyone that report has value. It’s all the constructs of leadership, and being able to turn an idea into an action plan.” James Loughran, a fellow Associate Professor of Organizational Leadership beside Lucas, supports his colleague’s notion that a master’s degree is important to have in today’s changing world. “In today’s competitive environment, when you look at job openings a master’s degrees is preferred,” Loughran says. “I was a hiring manager, and I always put those with master’s degrees at the top. It gets you noticed.” The Leadership Graduate Program is very versatile, Loughran added, and the degree can be applied to multiple professions including law enforcement, the medical field, education, nonprofit work, and business. “We bring people in from all over, because leadership is leadership and this degree shows employers you have an understanding of theories and applications in what it takes to be an effective leader,”

THE LEADERSHIP PROGRAM CAN APPLY TO LAW ENFORCEMENT, THE MEDICAL FIELD, EDUCATION, NONPROFIT WORK AND BUSINESS. Loughran stated. “In our graduate degree, we focus on the application to your job. It’s not just theory, it’s how you apply these theories to your job or desired career.” Though the cost of a graduate degree can be intimidating to some students, Loughran agrees with Lucas that it’s a price worth paying to advance in your career. “You have to show employers and potential employers that you’re growing,” Loughran said. “We need to continue to learn, and employers are looking for candidates for promotion. They need some way to judge that the employee is a continuous learner and isn’t becoming stagnant. If you’re in a position for ten years and you haven’t grown or increased your education, what are you doing?” If students are questioning whether to take on a graduate degree program, Loughran suggests talking to others who have a master’s to see the worth of the program. He insists not to wait, however, because time is of the essence. “You can’t afford to wait,” Loughran said. “Employers are looking for candidates with advanced degrees. The longer you wait, the longer it will take to grow in your degree, and your competition is growing. It’s the skills you obtain from the program.”
