Introducing the six-seat, 2017 HDX™ 700 XT Crew Side by Side from Arctic Cat®. Need room for a fourth rider? A fifth? A sixth? You’ve got it. It also comes with 1,000 lbs. of carrying capacity, the most passenger legroom in its class, the industry’s largest cargo box volume and four times more enclosed storage than the competition. Check out a new HDX Crew for your crew today.
Always wear a seat belt on ROVs. We recommend all ROV operators have a valid driver’s license. Never carry a passenger in the cargo box; the passenger must be able to place both feet on the floor while keeping their back against the back of the seat. Arctic Cat recommends that all riders take a training course, and that they read and understand their owner’s manual before operation. For safety or training information, see your dealer or visit http://rohva.org. ©2016 Arctic Cat Sales Inc., Thief River Falls, MN 56701

S
outhbound Tecumseh bikers, and by bikers I am referring to riders of the self-propelled variety of two-wheeled conveyances, enjoying the pleasantly paved Kiwanis Trail beginning at the intersection of Green Highway and Ives Road may encounter a group of fellow cyclists on a Saturday morning. Depending on what time riders join the trail, there could be an encounter with a group of cyclists led by Gary Poore, coming from or returning to Adrian. This is a welcoming group of enthusiasts who, more than likely, are astride bicycles purchased cut-rate at Re-bicycle Lenawee or at least tuned and maintained there. The cyclists make the trek every Saturday morning, rain or shine. Numbers vary according to the weather, needless to say. The bicycle mechanical services at Re-bicycle Lenawee are administered by an ever-changing and evolving group of bicycle tinkerers and refurbishers who are all volunteers in this nonprofit enterprise. “If your bike’s not working right, bring it in and we’ll fix it. If you don’t have a bike, come on in and we’ll get you on one,” says Poore, who supervises a team of volunteers who like nothing better than riding and fixing the most ecologically friendly mode of transportation short of walking. The median price of a bike at Rebicycle Lenawee is $35, but there are models that are cheaper and there are models that are more expensive, just like at any used car dealership. But the operative word in the Re-bicycle Lenawee business model is “non-profit.” The enterprise operates under the umbrella of the Lenawee Family Council and Children’s Services, and the volunteers are a collection of people who just love bikes and biking. Some of the volunteers are fulfilling community service
commitments, but all are learning (or teaching) a viable trade and hobby — fixing bikes. By the way, if you cannot afford the median $35 price tag for a good used bike, there is another alternative — FREE. Yes, you read that right; you can get a bike for free, but you must volunteer 10 hours of service by working on the many bikes that
“We just want everybody to have a bike. It is the cheapest, most affordable transportation available, and it can give a person true independence.” are donated and making them ridable. This works to everyone’s advantage. The volunteer gets a free ride, the nonprofit agency gets able volunteers, and as an added benefit, the volunteer receives valuable guidance under expert supervision on how to fix and maintain a bicycle, an employable skill. Poore says that the “showroom” inventory varies from day to day and season to season, but at any given time there are between half a dozen to 15 bikes of all different makes and sizes available for purchase on the showroom floor. All of
the bikes have been donated to Re-bicycle Lenawee and lovingly restored by the staff. “We have around a hundred bikes that we are usually working on to sell,” said Poore, “and they can need anything from simply new tires to a full tune-up when we get them. We have a lot of Huffys and Murrays, but we also get a few Raleighs and Schwinns that run a little higher when we finish fixing them. The point is, if you need a bike, we have a bike for you, and the price is negotiable. We just want everybody to have a bike. It is the cheapest, most affordable transportation available, and it can give a person true independence.” It is no surprise that Poore is an avid biker himself. His steed of choice is, not surprisingly, not some off-theshelf, hardware store bicycle. “I have a Chris King Cielo,” he said. “Chris is not a manufacturer. He is a West Coast craftsman, who builds frames, and the customer customizes the derailleurs and brakes to his or her specifications. But the bottom line for anybody is that riding a bike is good for you, good for the environment, and gets you where you want to go. Total independence and no pollution or gas expense.” The hours of Re-Bicycle Lenawee are Wednesdays and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. “It doesn’t matter what size you are or how much money you have; we have a bike that will fit you for little to no expense,” Poore said. “We are always looking for donations of bikes, preferably not too rusty, and we are always looking for volunteers. We are community-service qualified, so people who need service hours are welcome. The important thing is to get out there and ride.” n 517.759.1427 Follow them on Facebook 313 E. Maumee St. Adrian
