- liberty farm of lambertville -

his is a love story. In 1999, Shawna Horvath decided to save a barn. Her Lambertville homestead included a barn dating back to 1856. While the character and history of the barn remained, the structure itself was crumbling from neglect. The foundation was cracking, the wood siding had been repaired numerous times with a hodge podge of materials, and a new roof was needed. The barn needed someone to love it, and Horvath was that someone. For the past 18 years, Horvath has been slowly restoring the barn as well as crafting the surrounding landscaping and gardens into a beautiful and peaceful oasis. Now after the long labor of love, the beautifully restored barn is available for rent under the name Liberty Farm of Lambertville. The new venue is open for all sorts of occasions, from weddings to reunions. “I wanted to provide something that no one else had with a price point that was lower than everyone else.” Several amenities are included in the barn rental, such as set up and tear down, tables, linens, decorations, and chalkboard signs. “This is a place to come and enjoy and relax,” said Horvath. “I wanted people to be able to just show up and enjoy their own event without having a worry in the world." Not only is the quaint setting perfect for meetings, reunions, baby and bridal showers, the affordable wedding packages give an array of options with weddings and receptions taking place in the barn or outside among her beautiful gardens. Horvath is even ordained and can perform the ceremony herself. The love story continues. After Horvath loved this piece of history back to health, many more love stories can now begin within its beautiful wooden walls. The Liberty Farm of Lambertville season runs from April 27 to November 5. n

From 1820 to 1850 nearly 2 million Irish immigrated to the U.S. “This Diary and Memoranda was written by Thomas Murphy in 1870 when he worked on a farm owned by Edmond Hall. The farm was located at Holloway at the end of Ridge (Raisin Township).”

In 1907 Thomas Murphy sent money to erect a monument in Kirkinriola Burying Ground. It says, “Erected by Thomas Murphy, U.S.A, In memory of his brother James Murphy, who died at Lisnagroagher 18th October 1872, aged 28 years. Also his sister Sarah J Murphy who died Lisnagroacher 28th April 1869 aged 6 years.” James Murphy is the great-great grandfather of this article’s writer.

The Inns he Village was founded in 1829 along the Great Sauk Trail,” Cornish said. “The community thrived with businesses because the village was strategically located at a convenient resting place for stage coach travel.” The hotel business was particularly vibrant in Clinton’s early years, with weary travelers looking for a place to sleep and eat and be entertained before continuing along their way. The Eagle Hotel, commonly referred to as the Old Stage House, was built around 1830 (where the current Post Office is located) to accommodate travelers and was later moved to Greenfield Village where it stands today as The Eagle Tavern. On Thanksgiving day in 1901, Alonzo Clark completed the new Clinton Inn at the NW corner of Michigan Ave. and Tecumseh Rd., which operates today as a restaurant, tavern and inn. Clinton was booming, it was a village with a steady stream of travelers enjoying food, lodging and entertainment. The Lancaster family would also get their start in the inn business. They arrived in Clinton in the 1870s, and in 1884 the Lancaster’s bought a hotel. The location was perfect as it sat on the main thoroughfare through downtown. The family later opened a livery, then started selling cars. In 1912 the Lancaster family was able to open a Ford dealership and built a garage downtown. In the 1940s, they added an insurance business to the garage’s offerings. Lancaster Insurance Agency continues today.

linton might be one of Michigan’s best kept secrets. Things are happening to wake up this sleepy town, bringing back its reputation from more than 100 years ago. Like many places in southeast Michigan, a reliance on industry and manufacturing caused Clinton to struggle when those businesses closed or left in the last part of the 20th century and in the early years of the 21st century. Then, a particularly ugly recession that began a decade ago, brought many things to a halt – home building, home sales, business expansion, and new business start-ups, to name a few. Still, many Clinton businesses have been loyal to the community even in tough economic times.

34

“I

t’s a wonderful place to live,” said Clinton businessman and lifetime resident J.D. Lancaster. “We support our schools. The community supports our police and fire crews. We watch out for one another. It’s a safe community. It’s a welcoming community. We take pride in showcasing our community.” Lancaster moved away for a short time after college to live in larger cities. Lured back to the area with a job offer in the family insurance firm and because his now wife, Joyce, was still living here, something important became clear to him. Lancaster realized Clinton was a place of peace and the perfect place to raise a family and be part of a community of friends. “Not waiting in long lines or having to make a long work commute was great. “I started comparing it to the way my life had been the year before,” Lancaster said about his return to Clinton. “I appreciated the fact that I knew everybody. It was just nice to see a lot of familiar faces.” "The Village of Clinton is a very welcoming place for people to live with its small-town charm and proximity to the larger metropolitan market to the east,” said Kevin Cornish, Clinton Village manager. “The Village is blessed with a wonderful school system to educate our children and prepare them to be successful individuals.”

The Mill he original Atlas Mill was built in 1836 and took advantage of the mill race from the River Raisin. Mills were an important part of early settlements as it provided both flour and industry to settlers. The original Atlas Mill was a thriving business and lifeblood to the community. This mill is the second oldest business in Michigan. Over the years, it has changed hands several times, but in 2009, tragedy struck. The majority of the mill was burned to ground by arson. All that remained were the steel and concrete grain bins, standing like reminders of what the village one was. Today, two Clinton High School graduates are working to revitalize this property so that it once again brings life to the community.

Good friends Ethan Gibson and Ryan Penterics graduated from Clinton High School and left Michigan after college. Penterics moved back to Clinton when he was able to find an engineering job nearby. Gibson, who lives with his wife in New Mexico, is also hoping to return to Clinton. “I left Michigan in 2009 and ever since I left, it never got any easier to not be home,” he said. “My wife and I have seen every corner of the country, and we just wanted to come back home. No matter what, we knew we were going to end up here again.” It seems that the old Atlas Mill will be the ticket that allows Gibson and his wife to return home. Penterics and Gibson are moving forward with a plan to create a small-batch whiskey distillery and restaurant on the Atlas Mill property. “It all snowballed. We have a ton of support from the community, everybody we knew and people we didn’t know,” Gibson said of the project. While full renovation of the property is still a future endeavor, the Atlas Distilling Company

should become operational in a few months with their purchase of a still. While the full renovation will take time, being back in their hometown and enhancing the quality of life for residents by providing jobs, good food, and good whiskey is worth the wait for Gibson and Penterics. “Clinton is home and it’s a great town,” said Gibson. “It has great schools, and everything that anyone would want. The only thing that is missing is entertainment in town.”

The Future

hile the stage coach days are over, Clinton’s downtown is still a major thoroughfare for car traffic. While the years have passed, the business opportunities remain quite the same. Offering travelers reasons to stop and enjoy Clinton as they pass through could revitalize the village. Penterics, Gibson and Lancaster all see this potential for Clinton to become what it once was for residents 100 years ago, a community that offers everything people want while remaining intimate enough so everyone knows each other by name. The dream is to change Clinton from a bedroom community, in which people commute out to work and play, into a village in which people find both work and fun. “Going forward, I see a lot more young people wanting to live in small towns. They won’t want to just sleep here, but be able to also find entertainment here. All we have to do is build the structure within the city to give people entertainment and things to do.

he downtown landscape is about to change with the opening of the Clinton Arts Center (CAC) scheduled for sometime in the late spring 2018, according to Nancy Grott, executive director. The size and location of Clinton has been a perfect complement for the non-profit organization. “We have traveled to a lot of places and Clinton is where we call home,” said Grott. “It’s a beautiful area.” The brand-

new building will offer art classes, art studios, an art gallery, and a restaurant and bar. The goal is to bring in talented artists to teach and work, and to partner with culinary educators to staff the restaurant and bar. “Clinton needs a little bit of a spark for its downtown,” Grott said. “Having the Clinton Arts Center downtown as a non-profit organization is a way for us to contribute to the revitalization of downtown. We are excited to be part of the renaissance.” “The Clinton Arts Center’s new facility is a beautiful addition to the downtown and will attract a lot of artists to the Village,” said Cornish. What’s old is about to become new again for Clinton. With old and new business thriving, and a future filled with art and entertainment, the appeal of Clinton is not going to be one of Michigan’s best kept secrets much longer.

T

his holiday season the Village of Clinton is making Christmas truly memorable for families with Christmas in the Village on Saturday, Dec. 9 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Every part of the community is involved in this special celebration, from the Historical Society of Clinton to the Clinton High School Band and Choir. Beginning at 9 a.m. there are a variety of day-long activities in the Smith-Kimball Community Center, and music played throughout the day. Find the perfect Christmas gifts at the bazaar until it closes 6 p.m. The Clinton Arts Center (CAC) offers free Christmas ornament decorating for adults and children, also until 6 p.m. Families can compete in a tree decorating contest from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the community center, with the winner selected by the visitors to the center on Dec. 9. Participants must bring their own trees and decorations including lights, but no glass bulbs are allowed. Decorators of the winning tree will ride in the Holiday Parade, with up to eight people, on the Santa Claus float. The decorated trees will line the walk up to the community center through the holidays. Christmas music and story time is planned for the children at the Clinton Township Library from 11 a.m. to noon. Right in the middle of the day, from 2:305:30 p.m., the Holiday Home Tour kicks off, highlighting three historical homes decorated for the holidays. “I started the home tour six years ago,” said organizer Norleen Hicks. “It was like a dream come true. People are interested in these old homes, and they need to be preserved." From 5 to 7 p.m. feast on free hot dogs and potato chips at the Clinton Fire Station. As the dinner ends, the Christmas Parade begins on U.S. 12. “People are invited to participate with a decorated bike, wagon, stroller, car, wheelchair, tractor, dog, float, themselves or anything else,” said Doris Kemner. “Come and be in the parade. The theme is 'Snowmen'. Elves will be passing out surprises along the parade route." After the parade, all are invited to St. Dominic’s Hall in downtown to enjoy a Christmas concert and caroling by the Clinton High School Choir and Band. Snacks and coffee will be available. Santa will be there too – bring the family! “We wanted to have an oldfashioned Christmas event. There’s something for everybody.” said Kemner. Christmas in the Village is hosted by the Village of Clinton through a generous donation from DTE Energy and Monroe/Lenawee County United Way, as well as the Clinton Downtown Development Authority, Smith Kimball Community Center, Clinton Fire Station, Clinton Fall Festival, Clinton Summer Fest, The Clinton Local, The Clinton Theatre, Clinton American Legion, Historical Society of Clinton, St. Dominic’s Church, Busch’s of Clinton, Clinton Arts Center, The Clinton Community School Art, Band and Choir departments, and the Clinton Township Library. Organizers of Christmas in the Village includes Basil Greenleaf, Mike Walters, Bonnie Peters, Sally Daniels, Norleen Hicks, Jackie Proctor, Nancy Grott, Jane White, Ruth Knoll, Karie Dorsten, and Doris Kemner.

n 1958 our founder, Don Purkey had a big dream. He sought to provide the highest quality fuels to agricultural businesses and heating oil customers. That combination of hard work and honesty helped bring that dream to fruition. We still strive to be a shining example of how exceptional local service can work for the good of all.

Tammy Drouillard’s shop has been voted the Best Consignment Store in Lenawee County, and from the constant flow of custumers into her new Tecumseh location, many people agree. Drouillard opened her first consignment store in Adrian in 2006. “It’s a lot of work to get a business going,” she said. However, it was her business that actually helped her to keep going after the death of her first husband. “When he died, I just worked. I worked 70 or 80 hours per week. It helped me to stay busy.” Those hours not only helped her to heal from the loss of her husband, but it helped to grow a thriving business. It quickly became evident that Drouillard knew her stuff. She knew how to keep up on the latest brands and trends, she knew what to take in and how to price it. However, in the midst of her success, there was always a dream in the back of her mind. She wanted to open a store in Tecumseh and, in addition to clothing, she wanted to add furniture to the mix. Tammy eventually moved to Tecumseh and remarried. In a serendipitous moment, she and new husband, found themselves with the opportunity to purchase the building on Evans and Logan after the owners of the much beloved What a Find consignment store decided to retire. “Barry and Linda Seidel of What a Find have been wonderful mentors through this transition,” said Drouillard. “They are wonderful people.” Beyond the clothing and back room filled with resale and antique furniture, there is also a mission behind her business. “I was the kid who didn’t have clothes,” she said. “One of the biggest rewards of this business is that we donate what doesn’t sell. We help kids who are less fortunate, kids who maybe have lost clothing in a fire, or the girl who wants to go to prom, but just can’t afford a dress. I’ve been there. Giving back to the community is the best return for the work I do.” n

How are you a strong woman? It is very important to know who you are, know what you believe and know your nonnegotiables. I find strength when I work with those who share the same beliefs and are working toward the same goal as I am. I am energized talking with individuals who share my dreams and passions as well as sharing solution-focused ideas. You also need to stay focused on what is important in life. We can find ourselves surrounded by negativity that can easily distract us from our true focus. While feedback is always necessary, when you know your “true north” you are able to compartmentalize feedback and tease out the pieces that will help build you up and help you to persevere. How do you deal with negative impressions of women in the world? I really focus on the situations that are relevant to me and to my work. I realize when I am true to myself and I work to make the world a better place for others, I hopefully give others an impression of the work that can happen when we stay positive and true to ourselves. Who inspired you to be a strong woman and ignore those who doubt you? adults in my life who pushed few a recall I can me to be a better version of myself. They were present at key times in my life where I had to make decisions as I moved into a new chapter of my life. There will always be people who doubt you. But if you are true to your beliefs and are clear on what you stand for, you find that those that doubt you really aren’t a barrier to accomplishing your goals.

an Pastor of First Presbyteri Church, Tecumseh

Why are you a strong woman? I was raised by two supportive and loving parents who encouraged me to develop healthy friendships, invest in my education, and go to church. My mom was always positive and my biggest cheerleader. My dad impressed upon me the importance of doing the right thing. I was taught to take responsibility for my own actions, to hold people accountable for theirs, to stand up for what I believed, in and to tell the truth. Throughout my life, I’ve had great role models and mentors who encouraged me to give my best and to never quit, I was encouraged to be independent, while also learning the importance of community and working together for the common good. What do you do to nurture strength and resilience in yourself? I have a group of women I meet with regularly. We pray together, listen to and provide counsel for each other, and share resources with each other. I read and walk and maintain a balance of time with others and time alone. It’s been important to me to cultivate relationships with people whose wisdom and honesty I trust, and to be that for others as well. How do you deal with negative impressions of women in the world? I engage. I want women to know they are honored and beloved and that they are to be treated with dignity and respect. In January, I joined the Women’s March in Washington D.C. in order to call forth a renewed decency and civility in the language spoken to and about women and an accountability for appropriate management of boundaries in the interactions between men and women. What challenges have made you strong? The greatest judgment I’ve experienced professionally, has come from other Christians and particularly Christian women who attend churches where even in 2017, they are denied roles of leadership and decision-making. My trust in God’s call on my life, the support of seminary colleagues and friends and affirmation from the church itself has given me strength to persevere.

Owner of Boulevard Market, Tecumseh

Why are you a strong woman? Strength is born in self-respect; knowing yourself, taking personal responsibility, and having purpose. I was born and raised locally on a farm, and one of the greatest lessons my parents and grandparents taught me was knowing my capabilities. I learned I could repair physical objects, find value in hard work, and take pride in my own accomplishments without any pat on the back. The Boulevard Market was born at a time when my daughters were young. The girls were able to communicate with women of all backgrounds, and listen to what those women were doing and choosing in life! It also made us more compassionate, curious, community minded and diverse in our attitude toward life. How can we help girls become strong women? We need to teach our young women critical thinking/problem solving, self-respect and respect for others, personal responsibility, setting goals, planning for life, being creative and open minded to new ideas, to stop seeking approval from others, and self-discipline. We must take the time to help other women in our career fields, social groups, and community. This support is the CRITICAL point men have mastered...they don’t call it the Good Ole Boys Club for no reason. Men help each other to succeed regardless of personal feelings. How do you deal with negative impressions of women in the world? I believe my influence can make dramatic changes in the world. We can raise daughters/young women to be resilient women that go after dreams with real life skills to help them achieve what they want. We can be role models in choosing partners that respect and care for us. We should believe character and integrity are some of the most valuable assets to possess. To value time and attention to family and community knowing this will always be the most rewarding. I don’t believe in drama/gossiping. I follow the rule of “What other people think of me is none of my business.” I am not a victim of the world. I work hard at being open minded and creative.

Why are you a strong woman? pretty strong family. My a from I come father admired people who were good with their hands. He didn’t care about the issue of getting married. He cared about us being able to take care of ourselves. Why did you live differently from your peers? I never wanted that life. I wanted to carve out a life that was interesting and pursuing my passions. I never ever thought I would get married. I thought I needed to be responsible for myself. I never did want to settle for someone who would question who I was or what I wanted to do. I learned all these life skills. Then I met my husband. I didn’t get married until I was 49. He offered to take my name. We were true equals and true partners. We were our own personalities. What challenges did you have during your career? It was a struggle. It was tough being accepted. I was not buttoned down, or a man wearing a nice suit. I had to develop an outer shell. You can’t worry about what people think of you. I was atypical because I wanted to hear what my staff had to say. I set the tone by example. I never wanted to feel bad about how I treated people in my workplace. How are you staying strong in retirement? I’ve had some share of recognition with my art work. I feel pretty secure. I’m doing what I love.

Paula Holtz Tecumseh Economic Development Director

Why are you a strong woman? No one ever told me I could fail. How do you stay strong? It’s important to keep “showing up.” One thing I am trying to get better at is being more vulnerable. We all tend to correspond vulnerability with weakness, which is really not the case. Allowing yourself to be vulnerable actually should be considered bravery. If we are not willing to put ourselves out there, we incur little risk but also lower our chances of great reward, both personally and professionally. I want to choose to fail because that is where the greatest growth lies. I am definitely a work in progress on this one. How you deal with negative impressions of women in the world? I feel helpless when I know there are women (and hence children) around the world who suffer due to the fact they are female. However, I am most disappointed in the apparent lack of progress, and potentially even the recent steps we’ve taken backward, right here in the US. It’s tough not to feel disheartened at times. At a time like this, it’s more important than ever that we all become and remain engaged. It’s important for me to be out there doing my best to make my little part of the world a better place. It’s about slow incremental, important change. There are great, inspiring stories out there. Sometimes you just have to seek them out. What inspires you? I once read that when facing adversity, you either get bitter or you get better. I’d like to believe I tend to choose wanting to be better. Your thoughts and the way you respond to situations do indeed ultimately determine the outcome of a situation.

Why are you a strong woman? Being a strong woman is a decision I strive to make every day. Being strong isn’t something we’re born with, it’s based on who we choose to be when we wake up. You are a strong woman if you stand up for your values or moral standards. You are a strong woman if you stand up for others when you see them being bullied. You are a strong woman if you volunteer in the community or to an organization. What you do to nurture strength and resilience in yourself? Encouraging self-talk is something I do when I wake up and throughout the day when someone or something is trying to steal my joy. You are what you take in, and I watch my conversations, people I am around, what I’m listening to or what I view. My closest friends build me up and challenge me to become a better person. How do you deal with negative impressions of women in the world? Negative impressions and unrealistic expectations of body image for women in the world can be overwhelming. Change doesn’t just happen. To shift negative impressions of women in the world, we must start in our backyard. What inspired you to follow your dreams and ignore those who doubted you? As a young teen I was a ‘victim’ of sexual assault. I let the word victim and the tragic situation define me for years. It took me a long time to realize that I was no longer a victim, but a survivor and that “struggles are our teachers,” as Brendon Burchard says. You can grow from obstacles or let them define you. Reaching out to others for growth is the most important tool I grasped. If you want to be a teacher, find a mentor who’s a teacher, if you want to be a nurse, find a mentor who’s a nurse. Be around people who inspire you. Most importantly, let those who doubt you be the fuel to motivate you. You will be amazed by the power you had all along. n

Tuesday, January 9 7-8:30 p.m. Tecumseh District Library 215 N. Ottawa Street Registration: tecumsehlibrary.org 517-423-2238 Make your resolution count this year by learning how to set realistic and obtainable goals. Join Dr. Jennifer Sader at the Tecumseh District Library for a class that will help you focus your energies and reach your goals. “I’m looking forward to bringing this course to the Tecumseh Public Library,” said Sader. “I have taught it several times. I had one woman take the class twice, six months apart, because she said the first time had helped her to achieve several goals and she wanted to move on to new ones.” According to Sader, the workshop is in two parts. The first part uses design thinking techniques to help participants decide what goals they’d like to focus on for the new year. In the second part of the workshop, participants make a large collage using magazines and other materials to create visual representations of their goals. “Some people may have heard these called Vision Boards or Treasure Maps,” said Sader. “I believe that visualizing goals helps make them feel more real and compelling and can help create more motivation to achieve them.” Dr. Sader is a consultant with expertise in communications, technology, and online and in-person learning. She holds a PhD in Higher Education Administration from Bowling Green State University (BGSU), as well as a Master of Fine Arts in poetry and Bachelor of Fine Arts in English and creative writing, both also from BGSU. n

HF: From what I understand the Look Both Ways Before Talking show will be full of topics I probably don’t want to bring up at holiday parties? JG: These are the topics that you are told you should never bring up in polite company, things like politics and religion.

‘‘

How we spend our DAYS is, of course, how we spend our LIVES.” Stay Healthy.

The graduates of Second City Improv are legendary - stars like John Belushi, Gilda Radner, and Tina Fey. For nearly six decades, Second City has been entertaining audiences with edgy, thoughtprovoking, and spectacularly funny content. On January 20, Second City’s touring show, “Look Both Ways Before Talking” will be performing at Tecumseh Center for the Arts. This show puts Second City’s signature spin on the things you wish you could bring up in mixed company.

®

By Sara Hilton

We chatted with the show’s director, Jeff Griggs, about the show, about being funny, and about the role of comedy in America.

HF: What is your background? How did you end up directing for Second City? JG: I started taking classes in Chicago 20 years ago. I did Second City Improv and then started teaching at the training center. I was hired to perform and spent six years working on cruise ships doing Second City shows before going back to Chicago. In addition to directing I teach history and analysis of modern comedy at Columbia College and Episodic Narrative for the Harold Ramis Film School. HF: Were you always funny, even as a kid? JG: I guess I was. I got in trouble a bit in school. That is sort of why people come to Chicago for improv. You have a little bit in you that feels funny. You come here so you can take classes and get better. Second City helps you hone your funny so you don’t get into trouble.

HF: Speaking of politics, how do comedians fit into a democracy? JG: Our job is always to lampoon whoever is in charge, whether it is Bush, Obama, Trump. We take a microscope and poke at their foibles. There are so many serious topics we have to address. It’s good to know that we can also have a laugh over what is going on. HF: The fact that we can make fun of our leaders is actually quite a privilege isn’t it? JG: It is. I teach a class at Columbia and when we go back into history and look at the middle ages, only one person was allowed to make fun of the king, the jester. This was an important role. The king needed to be able to laugh at himself. It shows how humor is an important part of society. If the king can’t laugh at himself, you have a tyrant king. HF: How do you find the line between offensive and funny? Anything is going to offend someone, but how do you find that line where you land mostly on the side of funny? JG: It is a delicate balance. You have to be careful about hurt feelings when you are talking about things that are so close to people’s hearts. I take a look at it and think if I was in the other person’s position, would this make me walk out of show? If yes, we’ve gone too far. When it comes to politics we don’t want to hit people over the head with a message. Instead we want to open people’s minds to questions instead of offend. Hopefully the humor makes people question, and not get angry. n Look Both Ways Before Talking is the perfect remedy to cleanse yourself with laughter after endless holiday gatherings. It is the perfect place to sit back and let someone else face the torture of small talk in polite company.
