It tastes like the purest mountain water. .
We recently purchased a home in the country with a well and septic system in Tecumseh Township. The only negative about this great house was the really smelly water and rust stains in every sink and toilet. I called Bailey’s Watercare in Tecumseh and they thoroughly tested our water on site and further at their location. Our well water contained a huge amount of iron and was very hard. A new water softener was installed along with an iron eliminator. We added a reverse osmosis unit for our ice cubes and drinking water. I simply cannot thank them enough for the incredible gift of totally amazing water. No more rust stains, beautiful, soft water for laundry, showers, etc. And best of all, no more bottled water. Wow.
IT TASTES LIKE THE PUREST MOUNTAIN WATER (we used to live in Colorado - I know mountain water from the source!)

lthough dogs have been a lifelong love for both Scott and Joan Houghton, the variety stage entertainers took their canine appreciation to a whole new level a dozen years ago. They traded in a pair of tall unicycles for a pack of furry friends, and “Mutts Gone Nuts” was born. “To say it changed our lives is not an overstatement,” said Scott Houghton. We started by adding a three-minute dog routine in our juggling show. People loved it. Within two years we had eight dogs and were no longer a juggling show. It was now a dog show. There is a lot of comedy and a lot of dogs with a big priority on laughter.” The touring comedy dog stunt show, which will stop in Tecumseh’s Center for the Arts, features eight of the world’s most talented four-legged performers alongside four humans. World class dog trainer, Samantha Valle joined the cast of Mutts Gone Nuts in 2014. ‘Sam’ and her star dog ‘Geronimo’ have the Guinness Book World Record for canine double dutch jump rope. Audiences will get to witness this rare feat first-hand during the 75 minute comedy dog spectacular on April 29. Geronimo, along with several other Mutts Gone Nuts’ canine stars have appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, The View with Whoopi Goldberg, The Steve Harvey Show, and Ellen. “Comedy and dogs are two of my favorite things in life,” says Houghton, “and that is what Mutts Gone Nuts is all about. It’s a fun show and the dogs
are eager to perform.” Some tricks become part of a storyline involving clever dogs outsmarting their two-legged counterparts. “Kids love to see the dogs get one over on the people,” Houghton said. Drawing inspiration from the dog acts he grew up watching on The Ed Sullivan Show, Houghton continues to challenge his canine co-stars. “We always use positive reinforcement, so for them, it’s like a game. They always know it’s going to be fun.” From jumping through hoops, to walking a tightrope and catching frisbees, each dog has a specialty. Much of the joy for Houghton lies in the art of tapping into the pups’ unique personalities. “When the dogs come onstage, they’re playing. They’re doing what they want to do,” Houghton added. “The best thing I’ve learned is to just observe the dog. See what the dog is interested in and reinforce those behaviors with praise and treats.” All of the dogs appearing in the show were adopted from shelters. Houghton hopes when people see what rescue dogs can do, it will encourage them to adopt from shelters rather than buying dogs from other sources. “Most dogs and cats find themselves in shelters through no fault of their own and they make wonderful pets,” Houghton said. “Pet overpopulation is not a difficult problem to solve; we just need to get everybody on the same page. Spay, neuter, rescue, love is the mantra. I think it’s really catching on.” We asked Houghton if he had a favorite dog. “Right now, I’d say it would be my boy Finn. I’ve been working with him a lot lately on a new frisbee routine. So keep a look out when we get to Tecumseh. Finn will be the first dog on stage.” n

up a great By Sarah Hilton
They aren’t just for cooking anymore Kitchens are no longer simple work spaces, but instead have morphed into a marriage of utility and design. While the endless options and trends and possibilities found on places like HGTV and Pinterest can be inspiring, the endless choices can also be daunting, even downright paralyzing at times. Homefront sat down with three area kitchen designers and a cabinet maker to help us wade through the vast and ever changing world of kitchen design.
Should our Countertops be Quartz or Granite? Granite
Granite is a natural substance that is mined from massive stones. These stones are then cut and polished before being installed.
Pros: • Granite is a natural substance. • Each granite countertop is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. No two countertops will have the same swirls and patterns.
Cons: • Granite requires yearly sealing. Granite has natural fissures, and if it is not sealed annually, water can seep into the stone and break. • Some substances can stain granite. • While it is a highly durable substance, sitting or standing on a granite countertop could result in cracking. • The one of a kind masterpiece of granite can also prove to be a downside. The countertop you picked out from the store sample, may not match exactly and contain additional swirls, patterns, and colors.
Quartz
Quartz is a manmade stone composite.
Pros: • Quartz has a natural stone look. • Quartz is very durable, in fact, it is harder than granite. • Quartz does not require sealing or maintenance. • Quartz is highly stain resistant. • Quartz patterns and swirls can be guaranteed. The sample you see in the store will match what is installed in your home.
Cons: • Quartz is manmade and will not be a one of a kind masterpiece. • Quartz is not as heat resistant as granite. 32

ourtney and Justin Chamberlain don’t just love cheese, they make hundreds of pounds of cheese curds each week. Their Cambridge Cheese Company sold its first batch of cheese in December and now supplies the product to 11 retail stores, as well as having the cheese featured on the menu of three area restaurants. The Onsted High School graduates returned to their hometown with their four children after several years away. While Justin worked for the U.S. Border Patrol, they spent three years in New Mexico and six years living in New York State near the Canadian border. “You can’t find a place that doesn’t sell cheese curd up there,” Courtney said. When Justin changed employment and the family moved back to Onsted, they couldn’t find any cheese curds in this area. To satisfy their cravings, Courtney learned how to make the curds, two gallons at a time, in her home kitchen. After two and a half years of making and sharing her cheese with family and friends, the demand led the Chamberlains to embark on a commercial venture. On July 4th weekend, renovations began on the old Branch & Son property on First Street in Onsted to transform the building into a cheese curd production facility. Courtney and Justin saw a chance to help build up their hometown. “There’s so much potential for a small business to come in, especially in our little village,” she said. “The community has been fantastic for us,” said Justin. “Everybody has been real positive about it.”
C
ourtney makes the cheese herself when she isn’t working at First Federal Bank in Tecumseh, but has help with packaging when each batch is done. The milk is pasteurized and processed during the cheese-making process in state-of-the-art equipment ordered from the Netherlands, custommade for their space. It takes six hours to make a batch of cheese and 14 hours from start to finish for preparation and clean up. A typical batch uses 90 gallons of raw Jersey cow milk that Justin hauls from Mapleview Dairy in Tipton, but in December the demand was such that they upped the amount to 220 gallons. “Christmas time was a big eye-opener, because it started flying off the shelves,” said Justin. Fresh cheese curd squeaks against your teeth when you eat it. “It’s just a salty, gooey, weird texture,” Courtney said. “It’s in between string cheese and hard blocked cheddar.” While the cheese is considered a snack food, Courtney said many people use it in cooking, too. Retail outlets sell the cheese in plain, garlic dill, jalapeno, smoked ranch, bacon

Chicago Blvd. in Tecumseh, The Village Peddler Gift Shoppe in Brooklyn, Dick’s Meat Market in Adrian and McAuliffe’s Meats in Addison. Jerry’s Pub and Restaurant at Wampler’s Lake, Shugar Creek Restaurant in Onsted and the Main Street Stable and Tavern in Blissfield all use the cheese curd in dishes on their menus.
T
he couple is optimistic about the
future of their product. “We want to sell cheese throughout the entire state,” said Justin. “In five years we’d like our cheese to be up as far as the Upper Peninsula.” Although Wisconsin has the monopoly on cheese curd in the Midwest now, Cambridge Cheese Company could change that. “We’d like Michigan people to eat Michigan curd,” he said. n
