here have been some changes happening in our local Chambers of Commerce over the past year. Changes that will create new impact of our local Lenawee Communities, while not losing focus of why we are here. Our local businesses are the backbone of our communities, we provide the best support and resources for each and every business in our community with one end goal in mind…. The success of our overall communities. Over the past year, the Adrian Area and Tecumseh Area Chamber’s have merged organizations and will be named the Greater Lenawee Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber mission is a membership organization committed to encouraging, promoting, and building local businesses with the goal of community enhancement through economic prosperity. We are excited to kickoff this new year with additional programs and events aimed at creating and growing relationships within our business community. Equally as important are the relationships that we will continue to build and strengthen within our community through the Tecumseh Farmers Market, the annual Musgrove Evans Award Banquet, participation in the Appleumpkin Festival, and the annual Tecumseh Holiday Season festivities and parade. Our impact will now be felt, not only here in Tecumseh, but throughout Lenawee County as we

work to support our greater business community with benefits that affect the bottom line to each employee that dedicate their talents to grow our businesses. Our Core Values will help us set our course and see us through on our goals. ADVOCACY — The Chamber advocates for the benefit of all member businesses, large and small, within its local area. UNIFIED — The Chamber is a thriving group with significant and diverse characteristics such as business size, sectors served, geographic locations, and service areas. VALUABLE — The Chamber offers a broad range of services to support and benefit members. RELATIONSHIPS — The Chamber strives to go beyond simple interactions to build strong relationships. Together, our community and our businesses can thrive to create a better quality of life for each of us. The Chamber is more than a networking event or a local festival, with a strong mission and volunteer base our organization is here to support and build a vibrant community that will create opportunity for all who call Lenawee County and Tecumseh home. — Matt Swartzlander Executive Director

Think. Shop. Buy. Local

Think. Shop. Buy.

G

o local! It doesn’t mean cutting off the outside world. It means nurturing locally owned businesses, which use local resources, employ workers at decent wages and serve primarily local customers. It means becoming more self-sufficient and less dependent on imports. Control moves away from big box stores and distant retailers in Ann Arbor and Toledo to Chicago Boulevard and others areas in Tecumseh.

Why shop local?

1.

Shopping local boosts the local economy because more of the money you spend in your local independent businesses stays in the community than if you shopped at a big-box store or out of town.

2.

Shopping local creates jobs. Small, local businesses are the largest employers nationally. When we support local shops and services, we are supporting the process of creating local jobs.

3.

Local businesses support community groups. Local businesses are more likely to support local events, schools, charities and sports groups. When you shop at a local business you are in essence supporting your community.

4.

Shopping local supports Tecumseh’s character. Our friendly and authentic small town atmosphere is created by people and businesses that live and operate here. Our distinctive shops and services contribute to our quality of life. Shopping local keeps these businesses here.

community guide on the go view the

Local 5.

Shopping local increases our tax base. When you support and invest your day-to-day dollar in Tecumseh businesses you are contributing to our tax base, which improves the services we all benefit from. No local businesses means higher taxes for everyone.

6.

Local businesses invest in Tecumseh. When we support local businesses we support the future of our community. Businesses owned by Tecumseh area residents are less likely to leave the community and are more invested in our success.

7.

Supporting local business encourages investment. Entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities, like Tecumseh, that preserve and support independent and distinctive businesses.

8.

Local business offers choices. Over the long term, successful local businesses are able to supply products based on local needs, interests and demands rather than based on national sales strategies.

9.

Shopping local saves services. Private and public services tend to cluster around shops. As retail merchants disappear, so do services such as hairdressers, banks, restaurants, and other businesses.

10.

Shopping local saves you time and money. By not travelling to out of town shops, you are saving on fuel (money and the environment) and time.

e were one of the first. In 1824, Musgrove Evans led a small group of pioneers to the banks of the River Raisin, making Tecumseh one of the first pioneer settlements in the Michigan Territory. The area was ideal for such a venture.

The river provided power, the soil was rich and fertile for farming, and the forests provided timber for the settlement. As the years went on, a carefully planned and bustling village began to emerge. Today, the city of Tecumseh’s historic downtown serves as an architectural storybook of Tecumseh, showcasing both the business and art that continues to flourish in this vibrant community.

THE MARKET ON EVANS T he Market on Evans is a vibrant community

gathering space located within walking distance to downtown Tecumseh. From

May to October, the Market on Evans is home

to Tecumseh’s Farmers Market, a celebration of the agricultural heritage of the area as well as a celebration of the farmers who continue to work the land. Market visitors will discover everything from produce, herbs, flowers, honey, syrup, eggs, soaps, candles, baked goods, crafts, pork, and beef. The Market on Evans is open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from May 21 through October 8. In addition to the farmers market, The Market on Evans is traditionally home to several festivals and events throughout the year. The annual Oktoberfest celebration begins with a morning 5K run, and the evening culminates with a German Oktoberfest celebration. Live German music sets the mood for a night of games and fun. Food trucks offer a variety of German foods along with special Oktoberfest brews and other drinks. Other events include the Top O’ the Mornin’ Festival, a St. Patrick’s Day celebration which also begins with a 5K race. After the race, the Market transforms into a St. Patrick’s Day celebration. The day features Irish music, food trucks, and games. During the holiday season, The Market on Evans is Santa’s official Tecumseh home where he keeps regular hours within a sweet little hut, so that children can visit and share their Christmas hopes and dreams. In addition to visiting Santa, visitors will also find Christmas tree sales at the market.
