2012 is a great year to be British. No only is it the Jubilee of our long reigning Queen but it is the year that London had been bestowed the honour of hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games. This issue we had to celebrate what Britain has produced in terms of talent; from the silver screen, to musicians and the creative arts. Emma spoke to talented fashion designer Olivia Rubin (page) as well as Brit band Stooshe. Lets not forget our feature interview and shoot with ‘Brit IT Girl’ tv star/musician/ designer Caggie Dunlop. As usual we have had the great pleasure of working alongside a great team of people from talented designers to up and coming journalists. I must say that after working with such great people it pains me to say that every once in a while one person can ruin a project for many people, that is why one must always have a plan B! This will be our last issue before our January relaunch so look out for the new era of Teenbook in 2013. Until then keep updated on the teenbook blog.

The Letter: New To Teenbook: ‘ The Letter’-a letter about those weird and wonderful teenage years written by someone, who’s been there and done that. This issues Letter is written by someone who is simply inspirational and hopefully you’ll agree.

Dear Teenbook readers, My Teenage years, where do I even begin? OK, firstly let’s talk about the fact that every other week I seemed to morph into a new “Me” depending on whatever phase I was going through at the time or whoever I was hanging out with. Sometimes I would be quiet and introverted and then the next minute I would switch into a super bitch, but most of the time I was “The class clown”. Yep, needless to say my emotions were all over the place. I was growing and I still am. I was “book smart” but also feisty, impressionable and easily misled, I would find myself floating between social groups, sometimes I’d hang with the boys, then the geeky girls, then hang with the popular girls, but most of the time I would hang out by myself in the Music Room. My love and interest in music was and has always been one of the most consistent things in my life. Being a Teenager isn’t easy. Your hormones are all over the place; you’re trying to find your identity, which is something you can’t rush. I soon learnt that all of the little quirks I had were what made me “Me” and that I shouldn’t try and hide them or compromise. You know deep down when you are not being true to who you are, so whenever you feel that way it’s time to assess the reasons behind your actions. The best advice I would give is to spend time focussing on you, get to know who you are, try new things, don’t hold back and have fun!

Please be warned though that it has been scientifically proven, that it is universally impossible to get through this song without stomping your feet and singing at the top of your lungs, so be prepared. A 25-year-old, London born- Devon raised singer with one of those voices that makes you hit repeat. He writes beautiful lyrics and has a beautiful voice. If his Album ‘Every Kingdom’ isn’t already on your summer playlist, then it soon will be. There are only a few designers who can be recognised by their print alone and Olivia Rubin is one of them. She has managed to make her designs and herself a household name, after only a handful of years in the industry. Olivia talks to Teenbook about her story so far...

As this is our ‘British’ issue we want to celebrate our favourite British people and you are top of our list. Can you tell us where you grew up? I am a London girl born and bred! I grew up in West London in an area called Maida Vale. I studied at Central Saint Martin’s in London and now run my label from South Molton Street, a famous central street in London town. How were your Teen years, were there any teen angst moments or was it all plain sailing? There were definitely some teen issues that I went through-I think most teenagers do in order to find themselves. I was predominantly a happy teenager but grew into myself and my style at university. At school I was a shy, reserved nerd. My friends are always reminding me of that! When did you have your eureka moment of realising you wanted to be a fashion designer? I was always creative. I think it was my Grandpa who inspired me though. He was a painter. I was constantly sketching and drawing at school. I got into fashion at school and then I never looked back. You studied at the Holy Grail of fashion Central Saint Martin’s, what was that experience like? Everything I imagined it to be and more! It was a hell of a lot of graft but I developed my style there and it really moulded me into the designer I am today. Only the best of the best get into CSM so was there a lot of competition between everyone or was it more of an encouraging atmosphere with everyone helping each other? I won’t lie, it is a very competitive atmosphere and doesn’t suit everybody. I do have a competitive nature so I thrived

in the CSM environment. I had a core group of friends and we all helped each other out, but in general you are left to your own devices. You need to be driven and determined! You have also worked with John Galliano, what was he like, does he live up to his name? I learned so much at Galliano and I really admired his work ethic and the creativity I experienced there. He was flamboyant, extravagant and would never compromise his style-I admired that quality. Not only have you got your main line but you also have done collaborations with Oli, Very, ASOS and Dune. Is it important for you to make your clothing available to different people who may not be able to afford your main collections? Of course accessibility is important! I love working with other creatives in the industry, especially to reach out to a different audience who may not

be able to afford my mainline. Applying my key attribute, print, to other mediums such as shoes and bags is also something I am developing at the moment. You have also just recently collaborated with Dorothy Perkins, on a really beautiful collection, did you enjoy working with such a famous high street brand and will you be bringing out more collections with them (we have our fingers crossed!)? It was a unique experience as I got a real insight into the mechanics behind a large high street retailer. I enjoyed collaborating on the range and working closely with the team to produce a range that considered the DP customer and my signature style. There will be more collections coming out later in the year! Your clothing is often seen on celebrities, can you remember the first time you saw someone famous wearing your clothing, did you have an OMG moment?

I did! It was when Cheryl Cole wore one of my dresses. I had no idea she was going to wear it! My friend called me to tell me and then it was a snowball effect-the phone didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stop ringing and really helped me get my name out there. I owe a lot to that dress! A lot of designers still seem to be a little anxious of bloggers and the fact that they can sometimes have a negative impact on their brand. What is your take on bloggers, do you think they are helping or hindering the industry? Bloggers are becoming increasingly important to the industry now that online is such a huge part of the fashion business. Most, if not all of the bloggers I have worked with or come across have been so positive about me and my brand that I think they have helped me grow my brand and create more of an online presence. And finally do you have any words of wisdom you could pass on to the Teenbook readers? Have determination, ambition and resilience. I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get where I am today through luck. I have had many rejections and knockbacks but you have to have belief in your talent and persistence to keep going. Ultimately donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t give up on your dream!

lack has long been the unofficial hue of the fashion brigade. Flattering, chic and easy to wear, any colour deemed ‘the new black’ has historically never lasted long with the fashionistas – after all, fashion is notoriously fickle and a chic LBD will always win in a battle. But then, last summer, the dark shade’s reign came under threat. Dazzling brights sprung up at all of the SS/2011 catwalk shows – with celebs such as Samantha Cameron and Diane Kruger loving Alessandra Rich’s neon-belted maxi dresses – and buzz-phrases such as ‘colour pop’, ‘colour blocking’ and ‘neon accent’ littered fashion speak. And, then, something unusual happened – bright colour didn’t disappear at the end of the season. As summer rolled into autumn, the sorbet shades were swapped for bright red, rich grape and cobalt blue. In short, whatever the season, or the weather, bright colour has been an unwavering fixture on the fashcircuit ever since. Like the skinny jeans introduced by

Kate Moss seven years ago, bright colours look set to be a style mainstay. This summer proves no different, with colour and pattern clashes translating into chic and wearable pieces. In fact, you wont be able to do anything by halves this summer – prints are eyebogglingly intricate and colours are eye-poppingly bright (see Proenza Schouler’s super-hyped colour`). You don’t have to look like a big kid, or a clown – for inspiration, check out Olivia Palermo in her bright red and purple Paige Verdugo jeans. There are no limits on the dazzling brights trend, but we do, of course, have tips. Neon is still here, but wear with caution. Too deep a tan or too much jewellery worn with a neon item will look cheap. When wearing neon, only ever wear one neon piece. Don’t ever feel like you have to commit fully to a trend; it’s about interpreting it and incorporating it into your own personal style. For an easy approach, try neon bracelets from Marc Jacobs or hip jeweller BexRox, or other small nods to the neon trend such as Zara’s neon trimmed leather clutches, a little pair of Topshop’s neon socks with brown legs and Converse, bright lips from MAC, or a bright nail shade by Essie or Barry M. Bold brights are much more of a presence this season than neon, though. The colour experts at Pantone named tangerine the colour of 2012. The catwalks at the SS/2012 shows were like a satirical bowl of fruit punch. Think zesty green, bright orange, coral pink and electric blue, as seen at the Jil Sander, YSL and Blumarine shows. Unlike neon (which is rather harder to pull off), anyone can pull of punchy brights. Surprisingly, it works wonderfully with pale skin – the alabasterskinned Emma Stone wears bright colour beautifully. For her recent appearance on American chat show, The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, Emma donned a tomato red leather (yep, leather) dress, red lipstick and red strappy sandals with aplomb – and without even a hint of a tan. A big way to wear colour this season is with monochromatic dressing, whereby you layer different hues of the same colour – think pale pink jeans with a bright pink jacket (as worn by the Victoria Secret model, Karolina Kurkova) which is also a neat way of fusing pastels (whose fashion residency also continues) with acidic brights. Take Karolina’s tip and don some coloured jeans – Zara has a fantastically wide selection of colours, in both sorbet pastels and loud brights (as do Topshop and most high street stores) and it’s an easy way to interpret the trend. Don’t forget your feet either: a white summer dress

can be instantly lifted with a bright pair of stilettos (ASOS has a great range) or coloured pumps, such as Alexa’s favourite Superga pumps (which come in over 40 shades). If you are rocking a pair of bright purple jeans, for example, keep the accessories to a minimum and make sure that those that are present are in neutral shades (tan or black). Similarly, whilst it’s fun to mix and match, you don’t want to try and shove in too many different colours to one look. Nobody wants (or deserves) to look like a human highlighter. Kate Bosworth neatly pulled this off recently with a grey sweater, mint green skirt and pair of bright purple and red Isabel Marant wedge trainers. Her outfit demonstrated that bright colours, pastels and neutrals can perfectly compliment one another. The problem with colour – and why professionals always default to black – is that it is deemed less serious. But that’s exactly why colour is so fun and perfect to embrace in your youth. Colour makes no apologies. It positively demands attention. If your clothes speak volumes, then your bright (and even printed) summertime look screams ‘HAPPY!’ Which is a useful little tool for when your soul – and the British weather - may be feeling a little cloudy. So go on, take a walk on the bright side.

didn’t know what to expect as I was frantically running around a London Studio, trying to find Caggie who had rung to say she had already arrived. Even though in the reality TV show, Made in Chelsea (MIC) she had always been one of my favourites, with her laid back, genuine and fun personality, I couldn’t help but think things could be completely different on arrival. As soon as we start the interview I am completely at ease with

her, as we begin talking about her latest ventures. Unlike some of her friends who were paid by companies to wear their clothes, Caggie has used her name as a platform for young, up and coming designers to start her brand, ISWAI (It Starts With An Idea). Her latest t-shirt collection, Five Ways, which features five designs on various styles of t-shirts, is another example of her forward thinking, saying that she wanted to ‘create a community for the artistic youth’. It becomes obvious

that there’s more to Caggie than Made in Chelsea. If anything, it has been a simple stepping-stone, using the programmes popularity to promote herself in a completely different way from some of her co-stars. Steaming ahead with her next project (which as you’re reading this, will probably have launched) is another t-shirt collection, titled L’esprit de L’escalier.’ that translates to: All the things that you wished you had said to someone, but didn’t get the chance to.

With her shock and rather quiet exit (compared to Gabilicous’ rather loud breast reduction party) in season two, we all wondered if it was the last we would see of her. When asked why she even considered leaving when the show’s ratings were at their peak, she told me, ‘I realised that the programme could only go on for so long and I didn’t want to be pigeon holed as a reality TV star.’ Even though she fondly recalls her time on the show to me she explained ‘it was

hardly challenging or pushing boundaries, and at times I found the experience to be quite soul destroying’. Now, alongside her clothing line, Caggie has been writing her own songs, which she hopes to release on an EP later in the year. Surprisingly the first time that she sung in front of a crowd was on MIC, although you wouldn’t have known it, as she didn’t

show even a glimpse of nerves. In fact, this MIC star has no intentions of shying away and isn’t even worried about some of the negative comments that she knows she will receive; ‘there will be a backlash regardless, but as long as I am happy with the final product, ‘I don’t care what other people think because I’ll be happy’. This sense of remaining true to

White heels, www.misguided.co.uk herself and giving one hundred percent to everything, is also a recurring theme throughout our shoot with Caggie, as she changes her outfits four times, expresses her dislike at others, and shouts over to the hairstylist laughing; ‘well I wouldn’t go out with my hair like this’. Caggie’s confidence is somewhat comforting and rare today in young women and is probably what makes her not only likeable, but also (I believe) contributed to her popularity both on and off the show. But it hasn’t all been plain sailing, explaining: ‘It wasn’t always like this. At the start of the series we all received so

much negative attention it was gruesome and hard to deal with, when people you don’t know are making comments about issues they know nothing about’. These ‘gruesome’ comments reared their ugly head once again when she dumped Spencer and started dating her latest beau, Joel Steel, who she met whilst holidaying in Australia last year. Asking her how he copes with all the attention she receives, she starts to smile and says, ‘funny you should say that, he rang me this morning asking me why I was on the Daily Mail website’. Well, no one could blame the man for his concerns, but the ever-confident

Caggie Dunlop simply says, ‘but I’m willing to give it a go’. So in all honesty, did Caggie ever believe that the attention would have been quite so great? ‘No most definitely not’ she tells me. ‘It has been very overwhelming at times’. For some of her fans she has become a kind of agony aunt (I can’t help but say really?) Which we both laugh at, because let’s be honest, she is a lot of things, but she doesn’t quite strike me as a ‘Dear Dearie’. But, always looking to push herself to new limits she explains, ‘After I started receiving emails from girls asking me for my advice, I thought that I might write a book, half poetry written,

which I started writing when I was 10 and personal childhood memories based on my own advice for young girls (in hindsight, she adds laughing) going through the pressures of religion, divorce, peer pressure and bullying’. So she’s not just an actress, singer/ songwriter, agony aunt and all round gorgeous girl, no, her talents just keep flowing and now it seems she’ll be an author as well. Does she have any regrets from the show? Don’t be silly she doesn’t believe in regrets. Not even Spencer or that infamous tattoo? Nope, and in the short time I met Caggie I would say she is definitely a girl who lives for the moment, taking whatever is thrown at her with a pinch of salt. She describes her relationship with Spencer as ‘extremely strong and thick skinned’. I can’t help but question her about her infamous giggle that she always seems to have when speaking to him, to which she replies ‘it’s a nervous laugh’ and regardless of what people think she isn’t laughing at him (sometimes though I wouldn’t blame her if she was), but I didn’t say anything, as somehow I can’t help thinking she wouldn’t appreciate anyone else’s comments about him. It’s clear how much he means to her. Unlike some of her other co-stars whose friendships have had their fair share of ups and downs, Caggie never really had too many dramas. When speaking about her friendship with Mille, she says’ we’re stronger than ever’. ‘During filming I saw so many people change when the cameras were around, I tried to not let any of the pressures or the fact that the camera’s were around to interfere with my friendship with her or the others, as we have all been friends for so long’. Caggie was never interested, when the rumours of Made in Chelsea started filtering around the streets of London, between

her friends. On returning from New York where she attended the Lee Strasberg film school she returned to London to find her friends, Hugo Taylor, Spencer Matthews, Jamie Laing and Millie Mackintosh preparing to start filming the first series. After initially denying the invitation to join the show she met the producers for a drink and then started filming the following week. So why the sudden change of mind? In my opinion, some people are made for reality TV shows and I don’t believe Caggie was. Being the opportunist that she is however, she knew it would be a silly opportunity to miss if she wanted to further herself in other areas.

So what’s next, I ask her? Well everything it would seem, ‘I would like ISWAI and L’esprit de L’escalier’ to evolve naturally and go Worldwide, to travel with my music, my book and then maybe a film.’ Even though she is still flirting with the idea of acting and auditioning for various roles, it seems music is taking the lead at the moment. Who knows how much longer Made In Chelsea has got, but one things for sure, Caggie seems to have used the immediate attention so well when other reality stars have used it so badly. It just goes to show, if you use your opportunities in the right way, you can be reaching for the stars.

Scarlett & Crimson What inspired the development of teen makeup brand Scarlett & Crimson? It was time to offer teens an insight into the world of make-up, with “adult” quality products but suitable for teen skin and teen needs. That said, while S+C is clearly designed as an introduction to make-up for a young audience, there really is no age limit on who can use the products. The brand ethos encourages self-expression, individuality, creativity and friendship, a great basis for today’s teens. ‘The products are intended to be the ‘first’ beauty experience for girls as they become young women. A slick of black mascara, some grey eyeliner for definition and a neutral eye shadow colour is perfect. You could also try a brighter colour as an accent colour in the outer corner of the eye.

I am… Anisa, a singer-songwriter from Manchester. I’ve been playing the piano since I was six and writing my own songs since I was fifteen years old. Getting signed to my management was… great to know that there were other people that believed in me and my music, other than my mum and best friends. I would describe my music as… organic, quite soulful and quite deep lyrically. Working with Wretch 32 was… special. Because he was actually in the studio when I recorded the original version of the song six years ago. It was great that six years on, he came on the remix to it, which was a very special moment. He was the only person I would have ever wanted on this track. My favourite song I have written is… probably a song called ‘In The Fire’. My favourite place in the world is… the south of France. I can’t live without… my slippers and Moroccan tea! My greatest memory is… musically, going to New York to work with Andrea Martin who wrote some of my favourite songs in the world. And probably just meeting people who appreciate my music.

Girl Power Meet Alexandra Buggs, Courtney Rumbold and Karis Anderson, otherwise known as Stooshe. Watch out One Direction I think these girls may be about to topple you off your pop band throne.

Stooshe means… Stooshe in London has a negative meaning so we didn’t like what the word was associated with. But then we found out that it also means stoned, hidden away and mystery. We liked the contrast of meanings and then decided to add ‘she’ on the end for girl power. There is actually a word ‘stooshie’ and it means to cause havoc or be in a predicament, so that’s perfect for us too. Meeting Travie McCoy was… Amazing! He’s our label mate, lucky for us! We wanted someone who was willing to have fun and grasped the whole tongue in cheek type of lyrical content we have in ‘Love Me’. He was

perfect and we were so delighted that he agreed to do his thing on the track. The new single Black Heart is about… Being in Love. It reaches out to anyone that has had their heart broken, so really a song that everyone can relate to. Our beauty secret is… High Definition brows (HD Brows)! The lovely Dermaspa Clinic makes sure our brows are always perfect and we couldn’t live without our HD Brows kit. Oh, and we always choose to emphasise either our eyes or our lips. Never both! Our favourite place to shop is… Everywhere. We love vintage pieces, so we get loads of our clothes in Brick Lane where there are so many good vintage stalls and quirky shops. We like to mix it up with high street stuff too, especially Topshop and River Island. We don’t always get time to shop, so we also get lots from online sites such as Never Fully Dressed and Preta Portabello. The best place for all our basics is Only. Our fashion crush is… Rihanna can pull anything off. Seriously, she makes anything look good. But also in the 90’s film, “White Men Can’t Jump,” the styling is sick! Everyone looks so good. The best thing about being in Stooshe is… We get to share this amazing experience and journey with two girls that we class as sisters. We have little rituals and things we keep just between us three, like private jokes that could have us laughing for days. We couldn’t imagine being solo, plus we’re all the same shoe size so if we like a sick pair of trainers, we just buy one pair of each and rotate! If you we could give one piece of advice it would be… Be who you want, when you want, and how you want! Stooshe’s debut album is out in November.

‘Radio

Rich Clarke and Kat Shoob present the biggest Radio Chart show in the UK, so who better to speak to about Popstars, Diva’s and awkward situations?

Faces’ How did you break into radio? Rich – I did student radio at Uni, and then after annoying a lot of radio stations, CFM in Carlisle gave me a job presenting their evening show. The boss of that radio station moved and took me with him and that’s what got me noticed at other stations. I travelled round the country before settling at Capital, and the Vodafone Big Top 40 Kat – I was doing some telly stuff and a London Dj named BamBam spotted me. His producer got me in on his podcast for a laugh and we got on really well. Then when he got work on Capital radio and needed a female co-host he put my name forward and it went on from there really. Working in TV is notorious for being diva-central, is working in radio the same and is there competition between DJ’s and stations? It’s pretty competitive wherever you work isn’t it? Radio presenters have their moments, but ultimately we all just want to be the best at what we do. Rich has his demands – you can’t photograph him unless he’s had a shave. Kat has that rule as well. You always sound like you are having so much fun on air, has working so close together made you become friends in your nonradio lives too? Sometimes we wish you could hear what we’re going on about whilst the songs are playing. Actually, maybe that wouldn’t be such a good idea. We are usually too busy to catch up during the week, so the time we should be spending preparing for the show, we’re usually discussing the traumas of the last seven days.

You have both interviewed and met so many celebrities so we thought we would play a little game to get the 411 on them. The celebrity who... You would take home to your mum... Rich – Rihanna. I would pay money to see my mum and Rihanna having a chat. Comparing tats – that kind of thing. Kat – Bruno Mars. He’s such a charmer. He’d probably do that thing of accidentally/on purpose calling her my sister or something. She’d love it. You would want as your BFF... Rich – Barack Obama – I could get so much more done. Kat – Paloma Faith. I bet she’s a brilliant best friend. You really wish you had their phone number... Rich – Kat Shoob. That question about friends – all lies. She’s never given me her number. Kat – There’s loads of people but I would be too worried I’d drunk call or text them and embarrass myself so would delete them immediately. You have had a bit of an AWKWARD moment with... Rich – Anyone who does one of “those” handshakes. You know the one’s that require a number of moves. I always mess it up, and Kat always laughs. Taio Cruz is possibly the worse offender. Kat – Oh yeah I love watching Rich do the handshakes, it honestly never gets old. I would say for me it was a Jedward moment. We somehow ended up being roped into singing a Christmas song with them on stage at the O2 arena a few years ago.

They just ran off doing backflips and Rich and I just stood there quietly singing like embarrassed kids that have been shoved on stage by their pushy parents. You would give ‘The Nicest Person In The World Award’ to if it existed... I think we are both in agreement over Rita Ora. We have said on more than one occasion she is our fave popstar. She’s so normal and down to earth, and considering the success she’s had, and the people she’s mixing with, she’s totally grounded. Has been the biggest surprise to you... Rich- Anyone who raps. Not being the biggest spitter of lyrics, I’m never sure how I’m going to get on with the rapper fraternity. They may rhyme about kicking your face in, but it’s all lies. Kat – Flo rida is always incredibly sweet and ready to dish out the big hugs. Don’t be blinded by the muscles and bling, he’s a big softy. You would tip as your ‘Next Big Thing’... The Lawson boys have been having a great year so far, so it’s only going to get better for them. Rich remembers seeing them on a tiny little stage at Wireless Festival a few years back, and it’s great to see them getting the success they deserve. Kat just fancies them. Packed with hit after hit this album will have you longing to have witnessed their heyday and if you did, it will have you reminiscing about them. Film for Thought ByJason Cluitt

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World Imagine if the asteroid destruction plans in Armageddon or Deep Impact hadn’t worked, and a 70-mile wide rock was heading to destroy Earth and all life upon it. Sounds pretty bad, right? Well for Steve Carell’s Dodge the situation is a little worse, as, upon hearing the news, his wife runs away. So, with the aid of his British neighbour Penny (Keira Knightley), he sets out on a road trip across America to reunite with an old flame. The film shares many aspects with director Lorene Scafaria’s previous work Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist (for which she wrote the screenplay). As with that quaint little indie-com, the focus on this picture is the burgeoning relationship that forges between the two leads, rather than the predicament they find themselves in. Its all set to an eclectic and always enjoyable soundtrack, from The Beach Boys to Wang Chung and The Scissor Sisters. By the inevitable end, it would have been easy for the film to take a maudlin and somewhat depressing tone, yet fortunately this is not the case and the story remains light and heartwarming to the very end.

When Lord Dashwood passes away, his family are ousted from their palatial mansion by their half-brother John and his vile wife Fanny, and are forced to considerably downsize their opulent lifestyles. Hope, it seems, arrives in the form of Fanny’s reserved brother Edward (Hugh Grant) and the dashing Mr. Willoughby (Greg Wise), who each take a shine to one of the Dashwood sisters (Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet). Directed by Ang Lee, this is a sumptuous Jane Austen adaptation, with the greatest attention to period details. The costumes and locations are wonderful, though some of the headwear is a little distracting. For the most part, the film is horribly depressing. The two main sisters, Elinor and Marianne, seem completely incapable of falling for a man who is not elsewhere betrothed, and Marianne’s affections in particular seem to fall to whoever last saved her from a rainstorm. The performances are noteperfect from everyone involved, particularly Thompson, who has the unenviable task of retaining the stiffest of upper lips throughout the harshest of conditions. Once her outer facade cracks and the wall comes down, the aftermath is a sight to see.

Tell us when/why you started doing fashion design? I approached fashion from an artistic point of view at GCSE level. Working in 3D, I soon realised my artwork would have a greater purpose than working in 2D. For example, the main purpose of painted pictures is for them to hang on walls. In juxtaposition to this, clothing also looks good hung from walls and is seen by a greater audience and used for a lot more purposes. Where do you get your inspiration? I find it best not to look at the fashion industry as it causes repetition. It always seems to come from the most random places, most recently a colour swatch from a French interior design magazine (IDEAT), an army surplus store and increasingly, images from the Internet. Which designer do you love/inspires you? Thom Brown’s work is great. I have always been a fan of his refreshing approach to men’s tailoring. He recently presented a Womenswear collection called ‘Resort’, in which he explored the notion of East coast prep and the results are really exciting.

What’s your target audience? I’m still establishing my focus but I’m looking to design for people that need their clothes to be functional. For example a t-shirt that allows room to move should still look good even when it’s not required – it shouldn’t be obvious that it’s trying to be a clever t-shirt. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Starting a label in the current economic environment would be really difficult. I plan to go and work within a fashion label that established itself when fashion did (the 60s). Once I’m in a better position it would be great to look at starting my own brand.

Riding my racing bike and running. Creativity relies on a good mental health but it suffers from being out in Nottingham. Describe your designs I just did a brief for Christopher Raeburn so I worked hard to make sure it would fit his current market. They are transitional through layering and function well for their purpose. I work hard to tie them in with modern and current silhouettes, interesting prints and a decent colour palette. Describe your personal style Lately I’ve been dressing really smart. Smart can be quite boring, so it requires attention to detail and colour where possible. My ankles are normally out regardless of the weather though!

What you’ll need 340g Self raising flour 340g Butter or Margarine 340g Caster sugar 4 Free range eggs 2tsp Vanilla Essence 2tbsps Milk 2tsp Vanilla extract Red and blue food colouring gel (we used Home2Bake)

For the filling * Strawberry jam * Whipped cream * Icing sugar Equipment * Two 32 x 21cm rectangular baking tray greased and lined with baking paper

* Two mixing bowls * Metal and wooden spoon * Scales * Teaspoon and tablespoon * Wire cooling rack * Circular cutter – approximately 6cm in diameter * Whisk * Sieve

How it’s done 1. Preheat your oven to 180ºc. 2. Before you even get started on weighing out your ingredients, make sure the butter or margarine your using is soft, getting it out of the fridge around an hour before you need it.

6. Sift the flour into the mixture and then add in the milk, folding these into the mixture with a metal spoon, making sure you do this as lightly as possible so as not to knock any of the air out of the mixture. Otherwise you’ll end up with a very stodgy cake!

3. Gradually add in the sugar, and beat for 3-4 minutes or until the mixture is almost white and very fluffy. Make sure you get all of the mixture by scraping down the sides of the bowl with a silicone spoon.

7. Once everything is combined, separate the mixture evenly into two mixing bowls, adding the red food colouring gel to one and the blue to the other and combine until the colouring is evenly distributed.

4. Break the eggs into a small bowl and beat lightly adding the vanilla essence.

8. Next, pour the mixtures into the prepared tins (blue into one, red into the other), smoothing over with the back of a spoon.

5. Slowly add this to the creamed mixture, making sure to thoroughly beat the mixture after each addition.

9. Pop in the oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown (hopefully they should have doubled in size). 10. Remove the tins from the oven and leave to cool for around 10 minutes. 11. Run a knife around the inside edge of the tins to loosen the sponge and turn out onto a wire rack to cool. 12. Whist the sponge is cooling it’s time to get whipping your double cream, this can take some time if you whisk it by hand, but you can use a hand held electric whisk as a quick alternative, you’ll know it’s ready when you can put the bowl over your head without any falling out

of the bowl, or when the cream forms peaks as the whisk is lifted out of the bowl. 13. Now itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time for the fun part, the assembly! Using the circular cutter cut out your sponge layers, making sure that you end up with an equal amount of red to blue. 14. Place the red bottom sponge layer on a plate and

then add the jam, followed by a generous helping of whipped cream, and then carefully top with the red sponge layer. 15. Finally, using a sieve lightly dust with icing sugar, and woila! Your take on a Great British classic is complete! 16. Store your creations in an airtight container and consume within 5 days, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s if they last that long!
