GAP YEARS:

Gaining Momentum and More Important Than Ever

n the early 1980’s, former teacher and headmaster Cornelius Bull helped to pioneer the gap year movement in the United States. Now, 40 years later, Bull’s vision for providing students with intentional time for personal and professional development through experiential learning opportunities is carried out by the Gap Year Association (GYA). Founded in 2012, GYA celebrated its 10-year anniversary in 2022. As a membership-based nonprofit organization, GYA’s mission is to maximize the potential of young adults through accessible and meaningful gap year opportunities. It is GYA’s belief that all intentional gap years have significant practical outcomes, whether they are independent or part of a formal program.

As we emerge from a global pandemic, despite all the collective loss we’ve experienced, we can’t help but look for silver linings. The COVID-19 pandemic forced many high school graduates to rethink their plans for the immediate future. As online coursework became ubiquitous across college and university campuses, attendance deferrals increased dramatically as students sought out alternatives to screencentered learning. Gap year consultants and advisors were suddenly inundated with prospective gap year students while trying to find new, safe programs to recommend. Gap year program providers saw an uptick in enrollment while swiftly updating itineraries and bolstering risk management policies.

2023 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO GAP YEAR PROGRAMS | 3

In many ways, the gap year field’s response to the pandemic served to strengthen the field as a whole. Existing programs were revitalized as they worked to meet the needs of new students. Many programs integrated important issues like community health, food security, climate, social justice and diversity into their curricula. Organizations adopted robust risk management policies. A variety of new, small programs emerged–many of which offer more accessible, domestic options–to diversify the field and increase opportunities for a wider range of students. Now, with travel restrictions lifted and formal program providers returning to in-person programming, students are no longer asking, “what is a gap year?” but rather, “why not take a gap year?”

The benefits of taking a gap year are clearly demonstrated in the results of GYA’s 2020 national gap year alumni survey, in which:

• 97% of alumni reported an increase in their self confidence

• 82% of alumni felt a competitive advantage when applying to college

• 81% of alumni reported that their gap year influenced their career choice

In addition to a strong return to in-person programming, the field’s emergence from the pandemic has seen the continuation of online and hybrid options, many of which make financing a gap year more attainable. In the 2020 alumni survey, one-third of students reported spending $5,000 or less on their gap year. A common myth about gap years is that they are unaffordable for a large number of students when in fact, more

and more students are opting for paid gap year opportunities through internships or service with programs such as AmeriCorps. Additionally, students who have access to 529 college savings plans are often able to leverage those funds when participating in programs that offer college credit.

Regardless of whether a student chooses to pursue a gap year that is independent or programbased, domestic or international, an internship or other paid experience–GYA recommends that they plan for at least two months, combining up to four of the following components: service/ volunteer; career exploration; paid work; and at least one “free radical,” which means exploring a previously undiscovered passion. A well-designed gap year can lead students to gain new skills, clarify career goals, improve academics, and discover a sense of purpose and a better understanding of self. College counselors, gap year consultants, and/or family and friends can be enormously valuable resources for students throughout the planning process.

When students take time before their postsecondary studies or careers in order to travel, explore, experiment, and discover deeper senses of purpose, they set themselves up for success as they pursue futures with more clearly defined interests, values, and skill sets. There is no shortage of options when it comes to gap year experiences. From learning a new language, picking up a new instrument, pushing one’s limits through outdoor adventure, volunteering with animals, or engaging in conservation work–the sky truly is the limit. If you can dream it, you can do it! •

Keri McWilliams is the Executive Director of the Gap Year Association. Born and raised in Montana, Keri attended the University of Montana and did a gap year in between her undergraduate and graduate studies. After completing her year of service with AmeriCorps, Keri went on to obtain a Master’s Degree in Public Administration with a concentration in Nonprofit Administration at the University of Oregon. She credits her passion and interest in the nonprofit sector, as well as all of her career choices, to her gap year experience.

THE 9 BENEFITS OF TAKING A GAP YEAR

or many teens, participating in a gap year program is a life-changing opportunity. Experiences differ program to program of course; your time in an academic program might be entirely different than someone who chose a wilderness adventure camp for their gap year. But there are few better ways to get to know yourself and the world around you than by

taking a gap year after high school. And no matter what you do during your gap year, the benefits it can bring are many. Here’s 9 worth considering!

1. CUSTOMIZABLE EDUCATION

Unlike high school, where you’re required to take certain classes, gap year programs can be

6 | 2023 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO
YEAR PROGRAMS
GAP

tailored right to your interests! Looking for something with lots of outdoor adventure? Or maybe something that will test your STEM skills instead? Either way, there’s a program out there just for you and your passions.

2. OPPORTUNITIES TO MAKE NEW FRIENDS

A gap year is a great way for students to make worldwide connections with other teens their age. In fact, this is one of the most important benefits of taking a gap year! You're sure to be introduced to all kinds of new people, voices and perspectives on your gap year, so it's a perfect way to expand your social circle outside of your high school or local community. You can also forge real bonds that last long after the gap experience is complete.

3. FINANCIAL STABILITY

While many gap year programs have an associated cost, the financial burden is almost always less than a university-level tuition. For this reason, taking a gap year can be a great way to put away money for long-term goals. That way, you can save while still ensuring that you’re working on your education and career!

4. CONNECTIONS AND NETWORKING

No matter what type of gap year program you’re in, you're sure to meet experts in that field while you’re there. Not only will these experts help to guide you through your gap year process, but they'll also likely be dedicated to helping you even further in life. A gap year is a great opportunity for students to connect with mentors who will be able to assist them long after the gap year itself is completed.

5. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Some gap year students will find more than just friends and mentors while participating in their program. Many may find an entire career! Whether it’s directly tied to the opportunity you’ve chosen or only somewhat related, a gap year is a perfect way to prove to potential employers that

you are the type of teen to keep an eye on. Just like with friends and mentors, the professional relationships you form on a gap year can last long after the program is finished, so be sure to take advantage of all the career opportunities put in front of you!

6. CONFIDENCE IN THE FUTURE

Students who take a gap year are almost always more certain of their education and career decisions, and are far less likely to change their major or field of study while in college. A gap year is a great way to make sure that what you’re considering studying is actually what you want, and to confirm whether or not you're ready for a college-level course load in one particular subject.

7. TIME TO RELAX AND REFLECT

The world can feel so fast-paced sometimes that it’s hard to take time to think about yourself. When's the last time you stopped to really think about what your education is going to get you? Well, a gap year of any sort is a perfect opportunity to avoid burnout and take stock of your goals, passions and interests. That way, you can plan for the future accordingly!

8. INCREASED INDEPENDENCE

For many teens, a gap year is the first time they spend any significant amount of time away from home. Many students experience this for the first time in college, but increased independence from a gap year is a way to make sure that you’re prepared for the transition of university living. Additionally, as gap year programs are all varying lengths, you can choose exactly how long you wish to be out on your own.

9. IT WILL MAKE YOU STAND OUT

No matter what gap year experience you choose, you’re sure to come away with a whole set of new skills and stories. When colleges or employers see that line on your resumé, it’s sure to make you stand out! •

IN MY OWN WORDS

EF International Language Campuses:

PASCALE GULICK

Why Did You Choose This Program?

I choose to take a gap year to gain some new international perspectives before remaining pretty stagnant for a couple years. I had heard great things about EF International Language Campuses and their programs from many of my friends, and it seemed like an opportunity that couldn’t be missed! And I was right. My time in Paris was unmatched, and unique to all my other travel experiences. Previously, I’d lived in Germany, New Zealand and France, but the EF school and community fostered such a positive learning environment and international experience, it was hard to compare it to anything else. The thing about the classes I found most appealing was the structure of the courses. Each class had a curriculum based on current events and easily applicable knowledge.

How Did You Decide Which Program Was Right For You?

I decided on the gap year program in France mostly due to my love of the French language and culture and because of the school’s central location. I also had a lot of help from EF Ambassadors on Facebook and my EF Admissions Advisors that helped with the application and enrollment process. The website provided very detailed help and many opportunities for outreach and preparedness.

What Was A Typical Day Like In Your Program?

A typical day in Paris consisted of a splendid morning walk from the student residence to the school depending on whether classes were in the morning or the afternoon. Classes usually spanned four or five hours, so that would be time spent on or around campus. Because the school is so centrally located, we could easily walk towards the center of Paris at lunch time, or during breaks between classes. After classes ended, I would go to an evening activity with three or four friends. These activities included things like a trip to the opera or a soccer match. For dinner, we’d have our choice between eating in or going out to any of the many restaurants around our residence. We also were able to go to many discos, and concerts which were all amazing.

What Was The Most Memorable Moment Of Your Gap Year?

The most memorable moment was probably our trip to the Louvre. I am an art fanatic and was in absolute heaven. This trip was free because we were EF students, and we were allowed to spend as much time as we wanted! Coincidentally, the next day in class we had a quiz and presentation about Paris and its history, resulting in prizes of cheese and wine. We were very prepared for this after our museum trip and were all rewarded quite well in the end.

What Advice Do You Have For Teens Looking for Gap Year Programs?

My advice to people looking to take a gap year would be: Ask questions! Nowadays there are so many options for travel and growth, but there are also many outlets for help and advice to utilize! In addition to that, there is much research to be done! EF lists so many resources and information on how schools function, and other students’ experiences. In short, talk to people! Information and advice received firsthand adds so much authenticity and confidence to a decision!

HOW DO YOU PAY FOR A GAP YEAR?

5 Options to Consider

ap years can be incredible, life changing experiences, but many of the best programs require some form of down payment or enrollment fee. While there are many low cost programs out there, cost is a major factor to consider when choosing a gap year program. Even for students who just take a year to travel before college, expenses can pile up fast.

It’s important to remember though that even the most expensive gap year programs cost thousands of dollars less than an equivalent semester of university study. If you’re participating in a gap year program to explore a subject you’re interested in studying further in college, then the price tag might be more than worth it. Instead of paying for two years of college just to change your major halfway through, a gap year experience could help you choose the right path and even earn you college credit!

Even so, for many students, affordability is the most important aspect when it comes to choosing a gap year program, so it's important to know all of the options available to you when it comes to financing one. Here are 5 of the most common ways students pay for a gap year:

1. SCHOLARSHIPS

While not nearly as common as academic scholarships to 4-year universities, gap year scholarships and loans do exist. Most of these scholarships require that the gap year program awards college credit, but there are a number of programs out there that do just that. Additionally, a number of gap year counselors and consultants offer speciality support scholarships for students. Individual programs too may also offer scholarships or financial aid to qualifying students, so be sure to inquire when exploring programs.

2. A 529 TAX SAVINGS ACCOUNT

Some students may be able to use a 529 tax savings account to help fund their gap year experience. This too requires that the gap year program awards college credit but, if it does, a 529 can be used for all sorts of gap year expenses, not just tuition. While the primary goal of your gap year shouldn’t be just to get college credit, finding a program that offers it can certainly help reduce the total cost.

10 | 2023 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO GAP YEAR PROGRAMS

3. DONATIONS AND GIFTS

If there are no scholarships available for your preferred program or if the experience does not offer college credit, you may have to be more creative with your gap year funding. Many students hold a fundraising campaign to afford their gap years through sites like Go Fund Me or other online platforms. Other students may write to family members, friends and local businesses and churches, asking for small contributions to help fund their gap experience. It’s important to be honest and clear in these situations about where and how the money will be used. Explain to potential donors what you hope to gain from your gap year experience, and how their gift will help you achieve it.

4. WORKING

These days, it’s not uncommon for students to take an extended break between high school and college to live at home and save some money, and students interested in a gap year experience

can certainly do the same! While some gap year experiences are months or year long endeavors, many of the best programs are only a few weeks in length. If the timing is right then, consider working for the majority of your gap year and storing away a little bit of money every month to help pay for your program. Not only will you get valuable work experience, but you’ll have the opportunity to use your hard-earned money on a truly transformative program.

5. ALL OF THE ABOVE!

The truth is that, for many gap year students, no single method listed above will pay for the full cost of their gap year. In fact, depending on the program, you may need to employ two or three of the options mentioned here, and that’s perfectly reasonable. With a combination of scholarships, donations, savings and more though, any student can fund the gap year of their dreams! •

IN MY OWN WORDS

MEG MACDONALD

Why Did You Choose This Program?

I have a passion for travel and have always wanted to study abroad. I could not study abroad for an entire semester, so I decided to find a summer program that would fulfill my sense of adventure and work with the dates I was off for the summer. I discovered Sea|mester through an internet search. However, a few months before my departure, I randomly met a couple of Sea|mester alumni and talked with them firsthand about the experience. Sea|mester sent detailed information regarding the credits I would be getting through the University of South Florida. They sent information on how to work with my university to get credit for the classes. The whole process was seamless.

How Did You Decide Which Program Was Right For You?

My trip was the Summer 80-day Tahiti to Australia program. Not only did it include a large variety of destinations that I never dreamed I would be able to go to, but the program also had many different classes that I knew would grow my knowledge base. The photos on the website, the blog, and reading past voyage logs solidified that this program

was what I was looking for. Getting to spend each day outside, sailing, and visiting some of the most beautiful islands on Earth sounded like a dream to me.

What Was A Typical Day Like In Your Program?

One of my favorite parts about this program was that each day looked completely different. Days on land would start similarly with breakfast on the boat, showing the ship some love, and then going about the various activities for the day. Some days it was hiking to waterfalls in Fiji. Other times it was wreck dives in Vanuatu. Some days it was exploring the beaches of the Whitsunday Islands in Australia. No two days looked the same, encouraging us to live in the moment.

Passage life had far more of a routine to it. Each person would be assigned a watch group. Once underway, there would be a comfortable routine to watch groups. Meals, chores, and classes would all flow seamlessly throughout the day. Exciting parts of the day would be a random watch group conversation, increased swells, different stars, constellations, or dolphins and whales randomly surfacing. Every day was different and exciting.

What Was The Most Memorable Moment Of Your Gap Year?

I could write a novel about my summer on S/Y Argo, but I'll stick to one story. After spending several days at sea sailing from Tonga to Fiji with large swells, we spent two glorious weeks sailing around the Fijian islands. We went for a snorkel in the soft coral capital of the world known as the Savusavu strait. I dream about how beautiful the coral is to this day. They had the National Geographic magazine featuring the article on the Savusavu strait, and we got to snorkel and dive this amazing coral after reading about it in National Geographic. To say it was unreal would be selling it short. I am so grateful for every experience Sea|mester brought me!

What Advice Do You Have For Teens Looking for Gap Year Programs?

One piece of advice regarding this program is that you spend a substantial amount of time with everyone on the trip, so patience and understanding are key. You live with 24 students from different backgrounds, all within 112 feet of each other. Everyone gets exhausted, and sailing is hard work; however, the best part of the trip is the close bond that grows as a result. Thinking back, they were the best roommates I have ever had.
