LOTS OF ACTIVITIES & FUN!
Presenting TeenLife’s 2014 Guide to Overnight Summer Programs Get ready for summer! After the novelty of summer vacation wears off, most teenagers want to be engaged, involved, and active. Eight to ten weeks is a long time to be bored! With a little advance planning (and “encouragement” from parents or teachers), students can fit in an interesting summer program along with a job or other activities. While teens deserve to have fun during their summer break, in today’s college- and career-focused society, they should consider participating in a summer program that includes at least one of the following activities found in this Guide: academics, arts, community service, computers and technology, language, leadership training, sports, traditional/ CIT, or travel/culture. With 50+ summer programs to choose from, both domestic and abroad, your teen will surely find a program of interest. The benefits of summer programs are highlighted on page 4. Overnight summer programs and camps provide inspiring environments packed with self-discovery, friendship, and adventure. These summer experiences are beneficial for teens to not only grow as a person, but to also help them prepare for being away from home at college. Our feature article on page 14 will help you choose the right summer program for your teen, and the questions you should ask before the journey begins. We hope you find our Guide informative and useful. Don’t forget to reach out to the programs that sound interesting to you by clicking on the “Request More Information” link at the bottom of each listing. The Benefits of Engaging Summer Programs for Teens BY JILL TIPOGRAPH here are countless advantages for teens that engage in one or more meaningful, well-planned summer programs. Summer is the perfect time for high school students to challenge themselves and their values; master new skills; gain a broader global perspective; volunteer; earn money; and of course, prepare for college and the workplace.
Not only are they exposed to diversity and multiculturalism, but these types of programs also provide the opportunity for teens to apply academic learning from the school year to real human needs during the summer. They may also come away with a sense of “social connectedness” with peers, adults, and other activists sharing a common cause.
Learning social responsibility.
ingful summer experiences add significance and uniqueness to a student’s college application. Along with highlighting extracurricular activities, community service, and summer employment, both The Common and Universal Applications ask prospective students to list the summer programs they’ve attended since the ninth grade. Highlighting how their experiences as a whole or how one memorable moment has impacted their future aspirations can make for the perfect, standout college essay.
Summer programs largely devoted to service work foster an increased sense of social responsibility—a global view of society and a heart for helping others. These experiences allow teens to make more informed choices about college and career options as well as instill a lifelong interest in giving back. Most service programs are based in impoverished or rural areas in the U.S. or third world countries. Service in these types of summer programs typically involves physical labor (construction of schools, cleanup, restoration, etc.), teaching and/or working with underprivileged children, caring for animals, or preserving the environment. By engaging in volunteer work, teens have an opportunity to learn experientially. The tasks and responsibilities often expected from the program are unfamiliar and new, but also rewarding. They discover where their passions lie, while undertaking impactful work that can truly make a difference. They often return home with a renewed appreciation for what they do have. 4
THE TEENLIFE GUIDE TO OVERNIGHT SUMMER PROGRAMS
Paving the path to college. Mean-
Many programs take place on college campuses, which will prepare your teen for college in so many ways. College is a large diverse community where teens can expand their knowledge—academically, geographically, and socially. Many academic programs offer college credit as well, which will give them a head-start to earning their degree. Living away from home instantly teaches teens how to fend for themselves. It is amazing how much independence they gain from managing their own money during the summer or just by doing their own laundry!
Plus, the mere experience of living with other peers as roommates and sharing common spaces provides your teen with the know-how and skills to communicate and resolve issues by learning to put aside personality and habits.
Paving the path to a major or career. The right summer program can provide students with the opportunity to pursue a passion or explore new interests, which can steer a teen towards their future college major or career. In some cases, a summer
program can rule out a profession they thought they would like. The right summer program can help your teen become more open-minded, self-aware, independent, prepared for college, and even solidify a career choice. But, don’t forget the fun. No college admissions officer or parent should expect their teen to spend the entire summer break hard at work; there should be plenty of time to enjoy new friendships and memories.

TIPS
to Choosing the Right Summer Program for Your Teen
BY JILL TIPOGRAPH
There are countless benefits of engaging in a quality summer program for your teen, but sometimes finding the perfect program can be challenging. Here are some quick tips to get you started. • Start your summer search now! It’s never too early to start planning for summer. You need ample time to research and select from the myriad of summer opportunities available, many outlined in this guide. Keep in mind, some programs have applications, offer scholarships, and book up early in the year! • What interests your teen? Talk to your teen about what he or she is looking for in a summer program. Balance what they think will be most beneficial with your own ideas and goals. • Consider these important factors first: Type of program: The variety and types of summer programs are endless. Some categories include academic, community service, adventure, fitness/ nutrition, teen travel (both domestic and international), language learning/ immersion, college campus (credit, enrichment, college prep, remedial), performing or visual arts, sports, internships, and more. The options are endless! Length of stay: From one week to the entire summer, determine what makes sense for you and your teen in terms of participating in a structured or elective program. 14
Location: Is your teen interested in a local program, domestic program away from home, or international with travel? Tuition: Cost is a biggy. Prices vary based on program type, location, accommodations, duration, etc. and your budget is important. Age parameters: Programs typically have specific age requirements.
• Bring a Friend. Determine if your teen has friends from camp or school he or she wants to “buddy” with in a new program. Speak to the other parents and agree on important criteria. • Structuring the summer. Consider booking two different types of programs (e.g., two weeks at an adventure program and three weeks of a pre-college program), creating a varied experience for your teenager. • Engage an independent professional in your search. Review materials on a variety of programs, but don’t rule out the expertise of an independent summer consultant. They have extensive knowledge on all types of summer opportunities. • Narrow in on your summer choices further. Consider these key variables: Philosophy: Are the director’s beliefs
THE TEENLIFE GUIDE TO OVERNIGHT SUMMER PROGRAMS
consistent with your own? What type of teen typically attends and is most successful at this program? Policies, including level of supervision: How much free time will—or should—your teen have? Are you most comfortable with a lot of supervision or activities just with other teens? What are the policies regarding co-ed activities, smoking, drinking, etc.? Living conditions/preferences: Different program environments can impact a teen’s experience (e.g. hotels, dorms, home-stays, camping, converted buildings, rough plumbing, availability of hot water). • Talk to the program director before booking. If possible, even meet in person. Understand how the staff is trained.
• Check references. Find out if other teens from your area (with similar values) have attended the program. Speak to the parents and encourage your teen to talk to the program participants. • Don’t forget important travel necessities. Your teen may need a passport, visas, immunizations, teacher/coach recommendations, etc., which often take time and planning. • Communicate with your teen and the program coordinators often. It’s okay to check in with your teen regularly, as long as you allow for an appropriate amount of independence. Of course, don’t hesitate to address any concerns head-on through direct communication with your teen, the staff, and the program director. Familiarize yourself with the cell phone and Internet policies ahead of time.

How did you choose the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) program? I fell in love with the Columbia Scholastic Press Association months before I attended my first summer session. After spending a few days in the city with my high school’s own publication’s staff at Columbia’s spring conference, I was fully convinced that the best place for me to develop my interests in writing and journalism was to completely immerse myself in the heart of New Your City with some of the nation’s brightest students and leading experts and instructors. The workshop offered a diverse curriculum spanning a multitude of topics, small class sizes with one-on-one instruction, and an intense and competitive environment conducive to a once in a lifetime learning opportunity.
THE TEENLIFE GUIDE TO OVERNIGHT SUMMER PROGRAMS
What did you learn at CSPA? Attending CSPA was a multifaceted learning experience. In a week’s time, I learned more about myself, my interests, and most importantly, how to conduct myself professionally while experiencing a variety of pressures and circumstances. Three summer sessions later, I had a skill set that spanned crafting a webpage composed with my own words, photographs, and designs to thriving in a work-intensive, college setting. CSPA was the most dynamic and comprehensive program not only to become a better high school journalist, but also a collegiate competitor and upcoming professional in journalism.
How will this program affect you in the future? After attending these workshops, I found myself more than prepared to face an ever-changing world. Not only was I equipped with every tool and technique necessary to be a high school journalist, but also learned time management skills, insight into college life, how to communicate professionally, and an increased awareness of the society I live in. This program is not simply “another journalism workshop,” but rather a lifeapplicable journey that has truly prepped me for every curve ball, term paper, or journalistic project I approach.

SUMMER PRE-COLLEGE PROGRAM
Reflections of Being a Counselor-in-Training BY ROSA HEYMAN
hen I remember how I spent the summer after my sophomore year of high school— working as a Counselor-inTraining (CIT) at my sleep away camp in New Hampshire—certain images flood back to me more vividly than do more recent memories from my final years of high school or early years of college. Waking up to the sound of the bugle in the morning and the first shock of the cold air after I threw off my covers begrudgingly; the nearly scalding hot water we used to spray the plastic plates and mugs and bowls before we sent them through the industrial dishwasher in the kitchen; the earthy smell of the wooden walls in the barn where we had our evening program; the crackcrack-crack from the rifle range; the perpetual dampness that cloaked every item I owned for days after it had rained. I had gone to Fleur de Lis camp for four summers as a camper before my CIT summer, each time for only four weeks. I looked forward to summer and going to camp so much, that it was a logical and obvious choice to become a CIT. Transforming from a camper to a CIT took maturity, patience and resilience—you have actual responsibilities other than attending daily activities. As a CIT, you had to stay for both the July and the August sessions, as well as a few days before and after camp began to set up the tents and bring in the canoes from the waterfront. Eight weeks seemed like a terribly long time to be away from home, not because of homesickness, 24
THE TEENLIFE GUIDE TO OVERNIGHT SUMMER PROGRAMS
but because of all that I felt that I would miss while I was away. The parties, the concerts, the crushes, going to the beach, texting! Fleur de Lis is an all girls camp, particularly rustic and tucked away in the hemlock groves on a lake in southern New Hampshire. We slept in canvas tents on wooden platforms. Campers weren’t allowed to bring cell phones or really any electronics besides iPods and speakers. CITs were allowed to use cell phones only in places where campers wouldn’t see. This rule didn’t matter much, though, because there was barely cell phone reception anyway. Despite my concerns of debilitating FOMO (fear of missing out—a serious syndrome that can plague people of all ages), I barely had time to think about home after the campers arrived. The porches needed sweeping, the mail needed sorting; we had to prepare the meals, help convince the campers to drink their milk, and wash the dishes afterwards. On top of those tasks, we helped counselors teach swimming lessons, diving, arts and crafts, archery, and tennis. We planned nature walks and evening programs, put on skits during announcements and choreographed dances for air-bands. We taught the campers songs to distract them from their homesickness and received thanks in the form of endless friendship bracelets and lanyards. Eighteen CITs came back to camp that summer, and though we each slept in a different tent alongside six or seven campers and a counselor, we shared a retreat at the Cottage.
Painted white, with a screened porch that faced the lake and Mount Monadnock, the Cottage was where we spent most of our free time. We kept some personal items there, but it was far too small to hold all of our trunks, in addition to the ratty futon and the peeling beanbag chairs that we couldn’t do without. Each night, after the campers had gone to bed and we were adequately convinced that they had fallen asleep, we would return back up the dirt road that connected the tent fields to the Cottage and the lake’s edge. Once we had made it back to the Cottage, safely away from the vengeful mosquitoes and the creepy shadows cast by the pine trees, we would each claim a spot—racing for the futon or a chair, the unlucky ones
ending up with a blanket on the floor. There we could spend hours, playing truth or dare, countless rounds of “Never have I ever,” and hot seat. We entertained each other with elaborately detailed stories about our crushes, or scandals from the past year that had rocked our high schools, or summaries of the plots of the scariest movies we had ever seen. We all began to feel that we knew the home friends of our camp friends since we had learned such intimate details of their lives through these endless stories. Rarely that summer did I ever want to be anywhere else but our green, protected campus. Away from the stresses and decisions of “real life,” faced only with the choice of when to sleepily drag myself away from my friends and back down to the tent fields in order to rest up for tomorrow’s activities, I was able to feel truly carefree.

Things to Consider Before Sending Your Teen Away for the Summer BY JILL TIPOGRAPH
You’ve enrolled your teen in their summer program(s). Check it off your list. While your teen may think he/she is ready to conquer the world with independence, parents often know best. Help them prepare and transition to their away-from-home program with these tips: • Educate your child about the new countries they • Review with your teen the program’s may visit. It is no surprise that when traveling guidelines, requirements, and restrictions. This includes electronics, laptops, abroad, the culture may differ immensely from home. It’s a good idea for both you and your teen to cell phone policies, clothing, amount read up on the country he or she will be visiting so of permissible luggage (remember he/ that you are both prepared for their upcoming experishe has to transport it!). Your teen needs ence. Make sure the clothes your teen is bringing are to respect these rules as well as the program’s staff. As most smart phones appropriate for the region of travel (i.e. Do elbows and knees have to be covered? Are hats allowed? have cameras, some programs do not alCan shoulders be exposed?) You may even want low these devices. Look into sending an to find hometown-area restaurants that offer some inexpensive digital camera instead. If a of the same cuisine they can expect to eat while program enforces a no electronics policy, they usually offer a detailed explanation traveling. as to why they have this policy in place. • Establish a budget for your teen’s discretionReview this with your teen since the ary spending and discuss in advance how it is to policy often reflects the program’s phibe spent. Giving a teen carte blanche with a credit losophy, which is helpful to understand prior to the summer. card is typically a mistake; it’s imperative that he/ she learns how to budget their money ahead of time. Having a debit card that you can easily add money • Reinforce the zero tolerance policy for to can be a valuable management tool prior to the alcohol, drugs, and unacceptable besummer. Many programs offer suggested amounts havior (bullying included!). Programs often require students and their parents to bring. If you plan to send cash and are concerned about your teen holding it, ask the program director to sign a written contract detailing the if there is a staff member that typically holds money/ consequences for such actions. Use this valuables; or have them get traveler’s checks (which opportunity as a teachable moment, are replaceable if lost or stolen). Some countries do discussing responsible decision-making and accountability. Your teen must unnot accept credit cards and cash is the only way to obtain local currency. Helpful hint: if sending cash derstand that he or she will be sent to be held by a staff member, separate it into weekly home if the rules are broken! And be envelopes and label with teens name and amount aware that I have seen programs send enclosed. This makes for easy and efficient teens home even if their parents are away (with a pre-phone call); so have a distribution. back-up plan in case this happens. STUDENT PROFILE
In His Own Words JOSHUA NODIFF New York City, Age 16
Tell us a little bit about BELL The Brown Environmental Leadership Lab (BELL) was a remarkable experience that certainly changed my life for the better. The program is centered around environmental science, handson education, social activism, and community leadership. BELL brought together a diverse group of likeminded students from all over the world that subsequently became a family to me. What made you choose BELL? While initially researching for programs to attend last summer, BELL instantly stood out to me. I have a passion for environmental science and have always wanted to take an active role in making the world a better place while broadening my education. The program, which took place over two weeks at a campsite located off of the Narragansett Bay of Rhode Island, immersed myself and the other campers in an ecosystem where we could conduct experiments firsthand in the local surroundings.
What did the program entail? The experiments were hands-on and focused on a variety of topics ranging from coastal ecology to urban development to ocean acidification. We would conduct experiments in the bay by evaluating the abundance and behavior of local organisms, and were given opportunities to build solar ovens and shower heaters to explore the power of solar energy. We would hike in the woods to educate ourselves on the forest ecology and we would kayak across the bay to observe the coastal ecosystems. We also participated in a series of community building and leadership activities to help us all work together. How have your experiences influenced your aspirations? I left the program as a true environmental activist. The staff helped each of us create an action plan that featured a proposal for how we could establish social change locally once we returned home. We even spent a day on the Brown University campus in order to conduct our research. I have no doubt that this program helped us all become leaders for our generation, and agents of social change promoting what’s most beneficial for everyone—protecting our environment. What stood out for you the most during the BELL Program? The two most important ideas that I took away from this program are (1) our environment is beautiful, yet exhaustible and that it is our responsibility to actively sustain it NOW, and (2) every being on this planet is a natural leader in his or her own right—and the most incredible skill is to be able to see the leader in each individual. I would highly recommend the BELL program, and I know for a fact that my experience will assist me in my future as an advocator for a sustainable planet.
