CONSERVATORY VS. COLLEGE What’s the Dif? BY LAURIE HIGGINS

or students who want to major in the visual or performing arts, there are three choices: a music or art conservatory; a university or liberal arts college with a strong arts department; or a university with its own conservatory. Each option offers something slightly different, so it’s important to know your goals before you decide. “It really comes down to how serious you are about your craft,” said Abby Siegel, a college counselor based in New York City. “If this is something that you really want to pursue as your career, and you’re not interested in liberal arts and the sciences, and you have the talent, then maybe a conservatory is going to be the right thing.” At the Cleveland Institute of Music, Jerrod Price, associate dean of admissions and enrollment, advises students that a campus visit is a necessary part of the process in deciding what kind of school to attend. He also advises students to get to know the professors who will be their private instrument instructors. “They are going to be very influential in guiding and mentoring you during your college years, so you want to make sure it’s a good fit,” he said. “You want someone who is going to push you, someone who is going to make you better, and someone who has a great reputation for helping students secure employment.”

CONSERVATORY Conservatory might appeal to you if you are very focused on professional skills and don’t care whether a school offers lots of extracurriculars that have nothing to do with your craft. “Our students are very, very focused on high musical achievement,” Price said. “That doesn’t mean our students don’t like to have fun. It’s just a little different from someplace like Indiana (University), where going to a basketball game is part of the culture.”

CONSERVATORY AND UNIVERSITY COMBO Many conservatories have partnerships with universities so they can offer more diverse academic courses. For example, the Cleveland Institute of Music, a conservatory, partners with Case Western Reserve University. Students can even do a dual major if they are willing to do the hard work. But conservatories focus on professional training in the arts, so students should be certain that is the path they want. Students who want to switch to non-arts majors after they arrive at a conservatory may have to transfer to another school. That isn’t true of universities that have conservatories on campus, such as the University of Hartford, which has The Hartt School, a performing arts conservatory that focuses on music, dance and theater, and the Hartford Arts School, which is centered on the visual arts. »

“There are a lot of wonderful opportunities for students to be part of the wider campus community when they come to the Hartt School,” director of admissions Megan Abernathy said. “Any school that is set up like us is going to have that. There are Division 1 sports to take advantage of and all the clubs and activities.” At Hartt, general academics are taught within the respective department at the university, so students take English with professors in the English department and science in the science departments. Abernathy advises students it is easier to transfer out of the conservatory than it is to transfer in because the conservatory requires eight semesters of music lessons and ensemble work, which means four full years. The schedule for a bachelor of music or fine arts generally tends to be two-thirds the major and one-third general education courses with very few electives. When students transfer out, their music classes count as electives for another major,

Music degree offerings: B.M. in Music Education B.M. in Performance B.A. in Music BFA in Musical Theatre

but there isn’t as much wiggle room with electives for students transferring in. “Students embarking on their undergraduate career have the unique opportunity to study what they are passionate about, and they shouldn’t be afraid of that, and they shouldn’t be afraid to try,” Abernathy said.

LIBERAL ARTS SCHOOLS For students who want to continue their study of music or art but don’t want it to be the entire focus, Siegel recommends a traditional school with a strong arts department in their area of interest. “If you really want a more rounded experience or are interested in studying other subjects, I would say look at a BFA program or a competitive BA program like the one at Northeastern,” she said. “A lot of students are serious about their art, but they want a more traditional college experience.”

• Commitment to student success and individual attention • Inspiring mentorship by professional music faculty • Rewarding challenges for music students of all levels and interests • Vibrant downtown riverfront location and cosmopolitan lifestyle

Why did you choose Minneapolis College of Art and Design? One of the hardest decisions I have made has been choosing to follow my passion for art. With the support of my dad, who always saw a real talent in me, I transferred colleges and fell in love with the community and work produced from MCAD. What do you love most about art? Constantly growing, learning, and having creative freedom are the best parts about being an artist. The switch from learning about business to illustration was no easy task, but I think even more complicated than that was discovering what type of visual art I wanted to pursue. How did you choose what to study?

IN HER OWN WORDS

CASEY JONES

Minneapolis College of Art and Design How did you know you wanted to be an artist? I knew from a young age that I was the happiest with a sketchbook and pencil in hand. Outside of class, I would always be drawing and painting, to the point of receiving paint kits and sketchbooks for holiday presents instead of toys or games. I knew I wanted to pursue art as a career when I was in my first year of college at a university, studying something far from creative. During class I would draw in my notebook, paint instead of studying for tests, and always wondered what studying visual art would entail.

When I applied to MCAD, I was set on becoming a medical illustrator. I was fascinated by the human body and illustrating complex bodily functions. However, as I explored other fields, I was experimenting with print and pattern design, figure drawing, fashion illustration, graphic design, and more. The best part of being in this program is knowing that I have the skills I need to delve into many fields within visual art, communication art, and fine art. Currently, I’m interning at a place that is teaching me about product design, packaging design, and making mockups, which is a field I never would have even imagined being interested in. That is the beauty of a creative career: Discovering more about yourself and what your strengths are. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? As I learn more about my major and myself throughout this process, I see many of the skills I learned at MCAD being applicable to jobs I’m interested in. Not only am I learning skills about programs such as Photoshop and InDesign, but also how to conceive, present and communicate ideas to others, solve design problems, and utilize constructive criticism. With these skills, in 10 years I see myself working at a product and packaging design company as the primary art director and hopefully one day owning my own design firm.

SOMETHING SPECIAL OCCURS AT JACOBS THAT LEAVES YOU ENLIGHTENED AND EXCITED TO EXPLORE MORE MUSIC What’s your favorite part about directing and teaching? Ironically, the hardest part about performing is the end of a performance because typically the music ends, there is applause, and the people leave. There have been numerous times when I’ve reached the beautiful climax of a piece and just wanted to live in that moment forever. I felt this especially when playing flute/piccolo for “Tristan and Isolde” last year. While all pieces must come to end, something special occurs at Jacobs that leaves you enlightened and excited to explore more music. What’s the hardest part for you about creating?

IN HIS OWN WORDS

DENNIS RENDLEMAN

Indiana University Jacobs School of Music How did you discover your passion for music? I started playing the flute in fourth grade, and I vividly remember how my arms weren’t long enough to hold it comfortably. My brother had played flute, so I thought I’d give it a try. Well, it’s almost 11 years later, and my love for music has only expanded. A big factor in this musical growth is attending the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. I get to wake up and fill each day doing the thing I love most.

It is easy to take music at face value as a collective product of several musicians reading sheet music. However, the real art is what occurs off the page. It is this aural creativity that is able to transport the listener anywhere the composer desires. It is OK that all pieces have an end because that just means the beginning of another adventure. The life of a musician can be an amazing journey, but it is what you make of it. Currently, I am making the best of my time at Indiana University by triple majoring in flute performance, music education, and musical theater. What made you pick the Jacobs School? At the Jacobs School, the music is almost endless because there is always someone practicing or a concert to hear (especially with more than 1,000 performances a year). With countless world-renowned artists and alumni, Jacobs has a very strong legacy, and that was something I wanted to be a part of. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? In 10 years, I see myself on Broadway, in a professional symphony orchestra, or playing in a film orchestra.

18 | 2018 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO PERFORMING & VISUAL ARTS COLLEGES

What do you like best about music? Now, while at the DePaul University School of Music, I enjoy performing with talented musicians and learning to teach music effectively. Amid the dozens of musical experiences I’ve had, I still enjoy the organic connection that music creates between individuals. It is nearly impossible to create and perform music in an ensemble and leave without developing a meaningful connection with someone. Over the years, I have gathered a community of musicians and the experiences that I’ve had with them continue to follow me throughout my career. With the beauty that comes from such a demanding art, an intensified sense of criticalness accompanies. What’s been the hardest part about studying music?

IN HIS OWN WORDS

WILLORD SIMMONS

DePaul University School of Music What first got you interested in music? Classical music was an immediate attraction of mine from a very young age. You could often find me mindlessly plucking at the keys of a piano. My parents had no musical skills, but enrolled me in piano lessons and helped foster what desires I naturally expressed. As time passed, I joined my school’s choir and band programs. My time in these programs encouraged and developed my vision for a career in music education.

I have struggled to establish a healthy balance between critical self-analyzation and enjoyment for the art that I love. DePaul has taught me to find joy in my performance while remaining critical in a way that is constructive. It is this genuine nature of care and support that drew me to DePaul. Without the relationships I have gained, I would not be the student, individual nor musician I am now. What do you like about DePaul? The uplifting atmosphere that accompanies the high quality of teaching is what makes the School of Music influential upon students. During my time at DePaul, I have learned more than I could’ve imagined and I’m confident that I will be able to apply that knowledge in my career as I look forward. Thanks to all my professors, conductors, administrators and peers, I am determined to make a difference. Where do you imagine yourself in 10 years? It is my wish to lead a school of music as an administrator. The DePaul University School of Music has supplied me with valuable opportunities for growth that I will continue to rely on as I progress in my career. The people I’ve bonded with have been added to my musical chain of experiences and actively contribute to the lingering harmonies that will impact individuals for years to come.

5 Reasons You Should Become a

CONTENT CREATOR BY CHANTÉ GRIFFIN

n the age of YouTube stars, Snapchat stories and the Insta-famous, there is much opportunity for artists to create their own content. Ryan Hayden, owner of the Los Angeles-based Ideal Talent Agency, says that content creation is key for artists who either lack industry connections or struggle to find success through the more traditional auditioning path. “Creating content is often the best method to getting noticed for them. ... If you look at Lena Dunham, she would have had a hard time making it solely through the audition process, but her creativity was able to shine that much more through the content creation process.” This was true for writer-performer Aydrea Walden, whose first TV writing job was as a writer’s assistant on Nickelodeon. Walden wrote and starred in her own web series, “Black Girl in a Big Dress (BGBD),” a comedy about an AfricanAmerican Anglophile cosplayer obsessed with the Victorian Era. It debuted in 2017. Whether you seek to amass 5 million followers or simply share your work with an audience, there are five reasons why you – yes, you – should create your own content.

1. YOU CAN LEARN HOW TO RISK FAILING Many see failure as a reflection of their talent rather than what it really is: a treasure trove of invaluable lessons and opportunities to master their craft.

Hayden says failure in the entertainment industry is underrated. “You will fail to be as good as you want to be, but if you keep on failing, you will eventually become that good.” Walden’s experience exemplifies this. The satirical blog she created in 2009, “The Oreo Experience,” didn’t secure the thousands of fans and media attention that “BGBD” has. Yet, it helped Walden build an audience and refine her artistic point of view. Walden admits to being “terrified every step of the way” while producing season one of her series. She pushed through the fear because of one unrelenting question: Can I make something that is entertaining to other people?

2. CREATING CONTENT IS A WAY TO TAKE ACTION Content creation guarantees opportunities to make art, even without access to coveted auditions, casting calls or admissions to prestigious arts programs. Hayden insists that too many artists, particularly actors, passively wait for opportunities to practice their craft instead of creating their own opportunities. He says content creators have a lot of power in Hollywood, a truth that Walden realized when she created “BGBD.” The project enabled her to showcase her writing and acting skills and »

create opportunities for other actors and crew members in the process.

3. YOU CAN SHOWCASE YOUR BEST WORK If you feel like you’re often typecast or pigeonholed, or want to work on projects that challenge you artistically and demonstrate your creative range, then content creation is the way to go. “When you’re creating your own content, you’re often creating the characters that you play the best, and doing your best work, rather than trying to fit other people’s writing,” asserts Hayden. Walden created a character she related to, which gave casting executives a more accurate picture of how to cast her in future projects.

4. YOU CAN CREATE NEW CAREER OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOURSELF Creating content also generates opportunities that can advance your career.

Hayden suggests that if you can write and act like Walden, or sing and write, or dance and choreograph, then you can use one to advance the other. Walden says that her manager has used her show to showcase her point of view as a writer-performer and to initiate meetings with executives in search of new talent.

5. YOU CAN BUILD CONFIDENCE AS AN ARTIST Finally, creating your own content increases your confidence as an artist. When you show yourself you have the skill and perseverance to see a project through from beginning to end, you then believe you have the talent and discipline to become a professional artist. Both Walden and Hayden stress that the best way to work through fear is to simply get to work. “Just do it,” says Hayden. “You learn with each project that you do.”

MUSIC THERAPY: Learn To Make a Difference

BY BARBRA WEIDLEIN re you looking for a compelling college major that leads to a fulfilling career in music?

sciences. Clinical training through an extended supervised internship is required.

Consider music therapy.

Music therapy majors are also expected to become proficient enough in singing and on guitar and keyboards to pass certification exams in these and other areas when they graduate.

Music therapy students learn to assess the needs of clients and determine how to best work with them through music. Singing, moving to music, songwriting, improvisation and/or listening to music are some of the methods most often used to support children and adults challenged by a host of physical, emotional and behavioral issues. These music-based interventions are well-researched and have been shown to: • Improve communication abilities in people on the autism spectrum. • Reduce anxiety and provide emotional relief in traumatized children and adults. • Improve motor functioning in people with Parkinson’s disease. • Support bonding between parents and hospitalized premature babies in neonatal intensive care units. • Reduce pain in hospitalized patients. • Improve quality of life for people with Alzheimer’s disease.

WHAT DO MUSIC THERAPISTS STUDY? Colleges and universities in the United States and other parts of the world offer music therapy as a major for undergraduate as well as graduate students. On the bachelor’s level, students apply and then audition on a primary instrument. Once accepted, they study a prescribed program that includes music, psychology, biology and social and behavioral

Many music therapists get advanced degrees to gain additional clinical skills and training in order to work with trauma and other more complicated client issues. Students who major in an area of music other than music therapy can take a music therapy equivalency program after receiving their undergraduate degrees to gain the competencies necessary to become certified music therapists.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD MUSIC THERAPIST? Since music therapists work with people with a broad spectrum of developmental issues, disabilities, chronic pain and/or mental health problems, they need to experience a level of comfort when interacting with these populations. The ability to empathize is crucial. Excellent listening and observational skills are essential. Strong communication skills allow music therapists to relate with clients and family members as well as with other medical and educational professionals. Music therapists’ work can be intense. So this profession calls for developing a strong sense of self-awareness and ongoing attention to self-care. Continuing education and professional development are also necessary because the field of music therapy is ever-evolving. »

WHAT ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF HOW MUSIC THERAPISTS WORK? Premature infants

Perhaps the most researched application of music therapy is with premature infants in hospital neonatal intensive care units (NICU). Joanne Loewy directs the Louis Armstrong Center of Music and Medicine at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital in New York City. Her research has shown that music therapy provides some of the essential developmental support preemies miss out on due to their early births. It also helps reduce the impact of multiple stressors in the NICU setting, such as environmental stimuli and medical interventions. With the Remo drum company, Loewy developed the “gato box,” which mimics the heartbeat of the infants’ mothers, thereby improving feeding behavior. She also created the “Lullaby Ocean Disc” with Remo to imitate the whooshing sounds of the womb. The disc has been shown to help preemies regulate their breathing, reduce stress and ease into sleep.

Singing to infants in the NICU increases their alertness, and parents are taught how to use their voices for bonding.

Children on the autism spectrum

Dr. Tracy Richardson, professor and director of music therapy at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in Indiana, says that music is often what reaches children on the autism spectrum. It helps them build self-expression, vocabulary and social skills. Music therapists facilitate improved attention span, communication, gross motor skills, physical coordination and more through simple songs and improvisation matched to the children’s needs.

Alzheimer’s patients

Music therapy has been shown to be helpful to Alzheimer’s patients at all stages of the disease. Positive changes in memory recall, mood, pain levels, communication ability and social interactions are among the many benefits. “Even people in the later stages of dementia can benefit from involvement with music,” says Anna Lipe, a music therapist who works with Alzheimer’s patients.

“I WANT TO BE SUPPORTIVE, BUT…” Notes for Parents BY CHANTÉ GRIFFIN

s the parent of a young artist, you’ve invested time, money and energy into your teen’s artistic career. You’ve paid for lessons, attended competitions and lavished your child with praise. But have you prepared your star for financial success, besides advising on a Plan B? If you want to help your teen build a strong financial future that supports a career in the arts, follow these tips.

HELP YOUR CHILD UNDERSTAND THE FINANCIAL REALITIES OF ANY CHOSEN FIELD Any teen who aspires to become a professional artist must understand the financial nuts and bolts of how professionals in that field make a living. How many years do they typically work? What is the average annual income? What percentage of professionals in the field work full time? Do they supplement their income with a day job? “The reality is that most people are making like $20,000 a year as an artist. It’s rare for artists to make a middle-class income,” says Amy Smith, who teaches tax preparation workshops for artists and is the founder of Headlong and the Headlong Performance Institute, a Philadelphiabased performance training center for dance and theater artists. Miata Edoga, the president and founder of Abundance Bound, a financial education company for actors, artists and creative entrepreneurs, echoes Smith’s assessment. Less than 15 percent of

union members in SAG-AFTRA qualify for insurance in any given year, she said. A small paycheck, however, isn’t automatic doom for artists, according to Edoga. Knowing the numbers helps artists create a winning game plan in a topsy-turvy industry, she says. “We chose a roller-coaster career. We have to know that’s what we chose.”

TEACH YOUR CHILD HOW TO MANAGE MONEY NOW If you want your teen to experience financial security in the future, then you should teach financial management skills now. Edoga says that kids should be developing financial systems in high school or earlier. “Can you imagine kids being 17 and us giving them the keys to the car with no practice?” Los Angeles actress Malika Williams wishes she had practiced money management in high school, before the stakes were high. Although Williams has experienced success as an actor, including spots in national commercials and a recurring co-star role on “The Fosters,” she’s struggled to stay afloat financially. In 2017, she enrolled in financial literacy classes at The Actors Fund, a national nonprofit that helps with the challenges of life in the arts, such as housing, healthcare and career planning. There she learned the message Edoga teaches her clients: Financial education gives you the freedom and the balance to actually pursue your career from a place of power. »

HELP YOUR CHILD CULTIVATE ADDITIONAL SKILLS Developing other talents and interests enables multiple streams of income and provides additional arenas where your child can grow professionally.

“I want parents (of artists) to help their children understand that they are entrepreneurs,” says Edoga. “That’s the choice that they are making— to be an entrepreneur.”

Edoga advises parents to help their kids research other paths. “The more that we can encourage kids to explore other income-producing avenues, the less beholden they will be to waiting tables.”

Williams opted into entrepreneurship following a string of unsatisfying jobs. She recognized that her work experience equipped her to empower people, while a decade of theater training qualified her to teach others how to exude confidence in front of crowds.

“There are jobs that feed your personal mission or creative soul a little better than others. It’s helpful to understand what you really care about as a person and an artist, so that you can seek out a day job that checks those boxes for you.”

In 2017, Williams established The Center for Women’s Voice, a coaching and consulting business to help women improve their communication skills. It’s the “perfect job” for Williams, her opportunity to create a legacy outside of acting.

TEACH YOUR CHILD ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Smith believes that artists are inherently gifted to establish businesses. “One of our strengths is being inventive and creative,” she says.

While some professional artists make a living from their art plus a day job, many artists have embraced entrepreneurship and call themselves “artist-preneurs.”

“The idea of there being a model, one way to do it, has kind of disappeared.”

A PERFECT BALANCE BETWEEN COMPETITION AND WORK MAKES YOU A BETTER PERFORMER

IN HER OWN WORDS

I was on the UW-La Crosse website looking at their biology department when out of the corner of my eye I noticed their theater page and I couldn’t help myself. I started to think about how much work and time the pre-med and pre-law programs were going to take and realized that I was never going to be able to be as involved in the theater department because I would be spending all of my time studying and I started to get so upset. I cried, super hard. The thought of losing theater, of losing such a big part of myself, was too much. I knew that I had to do musical theater and because of the response it had elicited from me, I decided La Crosse would be the first place I looked for a good program. What do you like about the school?

VIOLET ENGLEBERT

University of Wisconsin - La Crosse What made you decide to study musical theater? When I was a senior in high school I did not think that I would ever end up a musical theater major. I loved singing and I had been in every production at my school since sixth grade, but when I thought about what my future was going to look like, no matter how much I loved theater and the arts it just didn’t seem like a viable option for me. What attracted you to the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse? My parents were supportive and always appreciated my abilities musically and theatrically, but they suggested that I look for a career path that was more sensible, so when I started looking for colleges I was mostly interested in the pre-med and pre-law programs. I figured I could tryout for shows in my free time.

La Crosse is simply a wonderful place to go to school. I knew that the second I set foot on campus. Something just felt right and I’m glad that it did because I have never found such a supportive and welcoming environment. The professors genuinely care about you learning something and gaining skills from each exercise and activity. For me, it is the perfect balance between competition and work that makes you a better performer and emotional support and respect that keeps you a healthy performer. There are so many opportunities to get involved and try things that I never thought I would be able to do like lighting, building sets and costumes, and managing a house. University of Wisconsin La Crosse opened up a million different avenues for me in a field that I absolutely adore, and I hope that any people who are reading this consider La Crosse if they’re looking to go to school. UW-La Crosse gave me a new family and a place to enjoy and hone my craft and that is worth its weight in tuition.

MUSIC & STEM: You Can Do it All BY BARBRA WEIDLEIN re you passionate about science – and your trombone? If you’re a strong STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) student and a proficient musician, there’s good news: When you graduate from high school, you can do both. An increasing number of students are finding creative ways to keep their STEM interest and love of music alive in college and beyond. Many become double majors, others minor in one or the other of these fields, and some use elective credits for music along with private lessons.

Yu-Tien Chou attends Bard College Conservatory of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts, with the intention of winning an orchestral position upon graduation. At his school, all undergraduates pursue a five-year program, resulting in a bachelor of music degree and a bachelor of arts degree in a non-music field. For him, that’s turned out to be trombone and physics. “The methodological aspect of approaching physics problems inspires my practicing methods, and the multiple aspect in music has helped me look at physics in new contexts,” he said.

ON THE FENCE? JUST TRY IT!

CHALLENGES OF A DOUBLE MAJOR

Music school admission directors urge you to apply and prepare for auditions if there’s any chance you may want to double major in a STEM area and music. While you may change your mind later on, you won’t miss out on any of the sequenced courses like music theory, music history and applied lessons if you continue as a double major. This is especially important if you want to graduate in four years.

Majoring in a STEM subject and music is demanding. You need to schedule classes in both majors, along with required labs and practice time. From the music end, the timing of rehearsals and performances is typically non-negotiable.

“If you are on the fence about double majoring, my advice is to just try it,” said Amanda Neri, who majored in voice along with health and human sciences at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. “You can always drop a major, but you’ll never know what could’ve been if you don’t give it a shot.”

“Students need to have excellent time management skills to do this successfully,” said Ross Beacraft, director of admissions at DePaul University School of Music in Chicago. Some schools, such as Bard, Oberlin Conservatory in Oberlin, Ohio, and Lawrence University Conservatory in Appleton, Wisconsin, offer five-year programs for students who want to combine music with a STEM degree. »

If graduating in four years is important, the bachelor of arts music degree may be a good option since it requires fewer music courses. And at liberal arts colleges, you’ll likely have until your sophomore or junior year to decide on a double major. Kirk Waiblinger, an organist, started out at the University of Colorado Boulder College of Music with a double major in music and physics along with a minor in mathematics. “I learned a huge amount about music theory/analysis and aural skills, which became, eventually, more exciting to me than performing music,” he said.

WHAT TO DO WITH A DOUBLE MAJOR STEM students who maintain their strong connection to music say the combination of disciplines informed and enhanced their career decisions. Scott Metcalfe, director of Recording Arts and Sciences at Peabody Conservatory of The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, says that music students with strong math and science

knowledge – especially in physics – find “a wider range of employment opportunities in settings that are more conventional” – such as with full-time benefits. These students work in areas such as acoustical engineering, electroacoustics (engineering loudspeakers, headphones and microphones) and audiovisual system design (working with architects on audiovisual needs at construction and renovation sites). Beth Burton graduated from Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, as a major in music and biochemistry. She now attends the University of Pennsylvania in the Ph.D. program in genetics and epigenetics. She plans to continue her passion for voice and piano by teaching young children in her own studio. And, Neri, the LMU student who studied voice and health sciences, is now working toward a doctorate in physical therapy in Scotland. “Studies show that the breathing techniques used when singing can actually improve performance in a variety of sport and leisure activities,” she said.

SMART CHOICE. Each year, more of the country’s best and brightest high school musicians are auditioning for the University of South Carolina School of Music. EVERY PERFORMANCE IS A CHANCE TO IMPACT SOMEBODY'S DAY OR LIFE year when I found my passion for the arts. I was an avid baseball player and theater was always No. 2. But when my theater director gave me the lead in “Into the Woods,” and my baseball coach wouldn't invest time into me, performing went right up to number one. What’s your favorite part about performing? I love telling a story and delivering a message to an audience. Every performance is a chance to impact somebody's day or life. What’s the hardest part for you about performing? The most difficult part of performing for me is making each and every performance fresh for every new audience. It takes a lot of discipline and perseverance to be consistent enough to keep the magic of the art alive and feeling new every single day. Why did you pick The Young Americans College of the Performing Arts?

JONAH BUCKELS

The Young Americans College of Performing Arts

I have made the best of friends in this college and I have made memories that I will cherish the rest of my life. The people here at The Young Americans are the best.

How did you discover your passion for performing?

How do you think YACPA will help in what you want to do next?

I grew up a "performer.” At every family event when I was young, my siblings, cousins and I would usually put on little performance for our parents and grandparents. Performing always meant family to me as I moved on to theater in junior high and high school. But it wasn't until my junior

The Young Americans has helped me grow is every aspect of my life. On an educational level, I am equipped to pursue a bachelor’s degree. Portfolio Day:

PRACTICE MAKES FOR A PERFECT SELL BY RACHAEL DEVANEY

ortfolio preparation is an art form in itself. But you can learn to refine it at one of more than three dozen National Portfolio Day events, held annually across the United States, Canada and overseas.

work, but not too much. It is better to go with "quality over quantity” – 12 great examples rather than 20 that are only OK, he says. And don’t be dazzled by the prestigious schools.

These college fair-style events, held in conjunction with the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (https://nationalportfolioday.org), bring together many college representatives in one venue to provide one-on-one critiques before art students actually apply to colleges.

"The mistake that a lot of students make is standing in line for three hours to speak to someone from RISD for 10 minutes. … There are many other top art schools that will have shorter lines and will provide excellent feedback," says Carl Lopes, a Cape Cod studio artist who, for 20 years, was visual arts director for the Art and Applied Technology Department at Barnstable High School in Hyannis, Mass.

The best time to attend a portfolio day is during junior year, before you begin the college application process, says Barry Beach, an arts-school admissions adviser based in San Rafael, Calif.

Up to 60 schools can be represented at a portfolio day, so students need a strategy, he says. He advises arriving early and knowing exactly what schools you want to target.

“These professionals want to see who (the students) are, what their future college plans are, and what their fears and concerns are,” he says. “They also want to review a student's work and show them how they can make it better.”

He also advises students that college representatives want to gain a sense of who the student is as a person.

That’s the point of attending junior year: having time to incorporate feedback into your artwork or to develop a missing skill before your portfolio is submitted with a college application. Beach, a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, R.I., says that portfolios should include the best of your most recent

"Students should also bring their sketchbooks, which are like a personal journal,” says Lopes. “This gives admissions representatives a sense of what inspires the student and shows them a bit of their personality." Anna Pating, 19, a student at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y., was nervous when she showed her portfolio to college admissions representatives, but they provided her with a solid outline of what they wanted to see during the application process.»

2018 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO PERFORMING & VISUAL ARTS COLLEGES

| 43

"Each school wanted to see a variety of raw artwork, but they were really different when it came to things like creative work,” she says. “Some schools, like RISD, wanted to see things set up very traditionally, and they had little interest in creative pieces, while Pratt representatives were happy to see a variety of creative pieces.” Pating, from San Francisco, was the first in her family to attend art school and worked with Beach during her senior year. Having an expert to guide her through the art-school application process was important, she says, since her family was unfamiliar with the process. "It can be really overwhelming when you are applying to a bunch of schools that all want different things, and it can be really stressful," Pating says.

PORTFOLIO DAY TIPS 1. Include 12 to 15 quality pieces of work. 2. Be open to a variety of colleges. 3. Get feedback from different kinds of programs, such as fine arts and animation. 4. Take notes. 5. Attend in your junior year. 6. Talk to representatives from digital programs. 7. Save all your artwork from freshman through junior year. 8. Include pieces based on your own initiative. 9. Include pieces stemming from visual discoveries – a drawing, for example, of that old sneaker in a corner of your messy room. 10. Get feedback from teachers before portfolio day. 11. Be open to criticism.

YOU HAVE MANY TRIALS AND ERRORS BUT FROM THOSE ERRORS CAN COME GREAT RESULTS. What’s your favorite part about creating? My favorite part about creating something new is knowing that it did not exist in the world before – a one of a kind, something that only I could put into existence. Just as there is much joy in creating, there is much frustration and hardship. You have many trials and errors but from those errors can come great results. How did you get interested in Wayne State University?

IN HER OWN WORDS

SHANNON KURZYNIEC

Wayne State University

How did you first get interested in art? There has always been a passion within me for creating – it is a driving factor in all that I do. At a young age I began to wonder how things were made and how could I recreate them. My mom would teach me how to crochet or paint and I became addicted to doing it.

After graduating high school, I was not sure what I wanted to do. I took my first college art course in Jewelry and Metal Fabrication at a community college and I was hooked. I then decided to research colleges known for their Fine Arts program. That is how I discovered Wayne State University (WSU). What do you like best about Wayne State? The art department at WSU offers many areas of study (e.g. Metals, Drawing, Photography, Fibers, Design and much more). I should have known I’d fall in love with all of it as I have taken many of the fine arts courses. The Art Department at WSU is a community. During my time here, I have gotten to know and work with other students that have the same passion for creating as I do. Where do you imagine yourself in 10 years? Wayne State has also helped me develop a career path in the arts. Once I complete my degree, I plan to teach, as I want to be able to share the wealth of knowledge that others have shared with me and help spread my love for the arts.

What’s your favorite part about directing and teaching? Although I would be happy spending weeks just analyzing texts, I love the little discoveries in the rehearsal room. Talking with actors about characters, I always challenge them with the hard questions or always push them to go a bit further. As a director and a teacher, the most gratifying part is when the magic light bulb flicks on and the scene just comes to life. You see the same thing in the classroom, too! Pushing your students to think bigger and ask harder questions with a guiding hand will always lead to the magic ‘Ah-Ha’ moment. Watching the smiles on actors’ faces when they get it and know that they had that breakthrough makes the entire day a win for me. What’s the hardest part for you about creating?

MICHAEL SULLIN

The Catholic University of America How did you discover your passion for directing and teaching? My mother was a teacher and I grew up acting in children’s theater – both lead me to my career path. I am currently a drama major (B.A.) with a focus on directing and M.A. in theater Education Accelerated Degree. While the directing and teaching programs are separate, to me they are one in the same. I think you have to be a teacher in order to direct and vice versa. The art of presenting concepts of empathy either previously forgotten or not before thought of drives me as a creator and educator. I never had an ‘epiphany’ after seeing a production in NYC or performing on stage, rather I have always known I wanted to make a difference in this capacity.

Directing can feel like solving puzzle after puzzle, which is challenging but also why I love it so much. In my recent work, I’ve been challenging myself to really find those moments that aren’t necessarily scripted but help us to tell stories truthfully to the audience. The game behind directing is while you have script that tells a story, you can’t just rely on the script to create the world of the play for you; as a director you are the one who creates that world. Anything from a subtle nod of the head to the placement of accompaniment can transform a common day occurrence into a meaningful moment. My focus recently has been on those treasured moments. Why did you pick The Catholic University of America? I went into the college selection process knowing I wanted to do theater education, which meant I was looking for a program with a broad curriculum that stretched across all facets of the theater. When it came down to only three universities, the department of drama at The Catholic University of America was the best fit for me. The comprehensive curriculum trains students to have a broad understanding of the various ways in which theaters function, thus providing students with various opportunities to experience the many career paths available within the theater community.

FILMMAKERS: Think Outside the Hollywood Box BY ADAM VILLONE

hinking about working in video or film production, but you’re not sure what career options are open to you? Well, here’s a short exercise that might help you answer that question. Make a list of every type of motion imagery you saw, on any screen, device or visual display, live or recorded, from the time you awoke yesterday morning to the time you went to sleep last night. Start with the devices, then add categories and what you watched. Include everything you can remember – from your smartphone to the movie theater and everything in between (gas pump video, electronic games, billboards, everything). You may need more than a couple of minutes. Now, imagine what your day would have been like if you had gone that entire time without looking at one single video screen or visual display on any device or media delivery system. Do you think it’s possible to do that? And even if you could, would you have been be able to function normally? I’m betting your answers are short: “No, and No.” Video is an integral part of our lives; it’s not going away. Here’s why: • 90 percent of information the brain absorbs is visual, according to the Visual Storytelling Institute, a trade and training association. • Video will account for 82 percent of all internet

traffic by 2021, says a Cisco white paper. 60 percent of U.S. businesses say they spend more than a quarter of their marketing budget on video; 64 percent of those surveyed said they create video content in-house, according to a study reported in Forbes. Streaming media and subscription services now reach more subscribers than cable TV companies, according to a June 2017 Fortune article.

Virtually every business and industry that makes, sells or provides goods or services is using video. Innovative digital and visual technologies are opening up new ways to create and deliver content in entertainment and the arts, science, medicine, education, research and just about every other sector of our society. Somebody has to create and produce all that content. And that could be you. Although your interest in production may have been influenced by movies and television, the reality of building a career in big-time entertainment is daunting and often discouraging. Meanwhile, the total number of people employed in the entertainment industry pales in comparison to the number working in video production in other industries. »

Adam Villone is an award-winning writer, producer, director and creative director who has made a living telling stories in broadcast and cable television, independent and documentary production, and advertising and corporate communications. He can be reached at www.adamvillone.com. 2018 TEENLIFE GUIDE TO PERFORMING & VISUAL ARTS COLLEGES

There are many other options that will give you a chance to work in any phase of production: creative, pre-production, production or post-production. Many of the core production roles in visual media are essentially the same as in entertainment: writer, producer, director, cameraperson, lighting, sound, editing and so on. So if you want a career in video production, and would like the opportunity to try different roles, consider, for example, working in corporate video.

WHAT IS “CORPORATE” VIDEO? “Corporate video” is a generic term for all forms of visual media created by companies to communicate directly to employees and/or to select external audiences. Generally it does not include customer-facing marketing communications like commercials, print advertising, promotional events or brand-marketing campaigns. Corporate video offers more production opportunities than any other sector of the production industry. There are as many as 30 to 35 types of internal or external corporate video, ranging from short website messages to full-scale documentaries to streaming live events, according to Gydes. com, a video marketing consulting site. Internal video is used for orientation, human resources programs, policy announcements, training, product information, research, meetings, financial and business reports and more. External videos are created for business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) audiences for marketing and sales, product launches, trade shows and exhibits, user groups, recruiting, websites, community relations and other selected audiences. Some companies have even begun creating, producing and distributing sponsored entertainment videos of their own to attract potential clients. In recent years, as the cost of high-quality cameras and editing software has come down, many corporations have opted to develop their own internal production capabilities and studio facilities and to hire their own production staffs. Access to more affordable equipment has also led to the growth of smaller independent production com-

panies, many specializing in producing video directly for corporate clients. The increase in the use of video has also created more job opportunities for freelance creative and technical people.

WHERE TO START As you consider a career in production, find out as much as you can about the different roles. Watch the production credits at the end of a program or film. Make a list of the different job functions and browse the internet for basic descriptions. There are lots of sites to explore on line, of course. Production companies explain what they do, developers of editing software describe new functionality, industry and trade publications feature the latest technical and production trends. It’s important to become familiar enough with an industry to help understand what you’re best-suited for. But nothing beats hands-on experience. Volunteer at your local cable television station. If your school has its own television station or studio, take advantage of it. Research your own community to find local professional associations or schools that offer classes. Contact a local production company, explain that you’re considering a career in production, and ask for an “educational” interview. And of course, use your smartphone, video camera and computer to create your own mini-productions.

THE FUTURE With all the transformative changes in marketing communications, there are no longer one-sizefits-all strategies. As consumers demand better content in videos, companies are allocating more of their advertising and marketing dollars to video content that can be viewed on multiple platforms. That demand will lead to more opportunities in creative and content development and in corporate video production. And one more recommendation: If you want a career in any communications sector, not just a job, work on improving your own communication skills, including your writing skills – essential for a successful career in any industry.
