How Has the Pandemic CHANGED STEM CAREERS?

hile some fields have seen a slowing of job growth in the last couple of years, STEM careers are more in demand than ever. Attracting innovative problem-solvers with a knack for research and attention to detail, jobs in this sector will always be hiring eager employees, even during and after the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The pandemic has changed STEM in very powerful

ways,” says USC Professor Christopher Emdin, Ph.D. “It’s revealed the need for STEM workers that will be at the forefront of addressing health pandemics, climate change, and infrastructure issues.”

Are you looking forward to a career in STEM yourself? We interviewed industry experts on the current state of the STEM industry, what’s changed since the pandemic, and how students can transition their interest in science and technology from the classroom to the lab room.

2022 TeenLife Guide to Your Future In STEM4

Here’s three ways that the pandemic has changed STEM careers for good!

MULTIDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION

Katie Burns, College Admissions Counselor at IvyWise LLC, says that one of the biggest changes to the STEM world after the pandemic is the way in which individuals and industries are coming together and collaborating to find new and innovative solutions.

While this has always been the case for many STEM fields, COVID-19 has reminded everyone in the field that a multidisciplinary approach is vital to finding successful solutions.

“The pandemic itself is a great example,” Burns says. “While inherently a medical problem, individuals in industries across the STEM fields and beyond have come together to tackle everything from supply chain issues and vaccine scheduling to rethinking K-12 education and inequality in access to technological resources.”

This cross-disciplinary approach is only growing more popular too. It makes sense: as the problems of our world get bigger and more interconnected, it will take experts of all specialties to help solve them. Are you ready to join the team?

Students looking to start their own STEM careers can begin learning this vital skill by collaborating at home. Burns advises them to first start small.

“Look for problems and issues that you can tackle in your local community that you can use a multidisciplinary approach to solve.”

A SHIFT TO REMOTE WORK

While the remote working revolution brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic was felt across all industries, the changes to STEM were quite dependent on one’s actual position.

“Most scientists that work in the lab and field will not see big changes in their jobs,” says Megan Seifert, Ph.D., Headwater Science Institute. This makes sense of course –it’s hard to work with disease samples or observe animals in the wild from behind a computer screen.

However, there’s a growing number of STEM workers that, now that they’ve gone remote, don’t seem to be rushing back to the office.

“Those working in math, programming, and data science are seeing more opportunities to work from home,” says Seifert.

Raymond Yan, Senior Executive Vice President, DigiPen Institute of Technology, notes that the video game industry — a field which employs a growing number of engineers, coders and computer scientists — is also seeing this trend.

“I feel the pandemic forced many game companies to recognize--and even value--the possibility to have development teams work remotely. Looking at the indie game development community, it’s now not unusual to see many small projects being developed by individuals who are all remotely connected, and not working in person.”

NEW EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES

High-quality educational STEM content has existed on the Internet for years now, but the COVID-19 pandemic has all but ensured the fact that online resources will continue to be a great place to start looking if you’re considering a career in STEM.

With all sorts of virtual STEM learning opportunities out there — including some of the ones listed in this very guide — it’s easier than ever before for students interested in STEM disciplines to get a jump start on their career.

“Individuals should certainly review content available on the web whether it’s on YouTube or in an online course,” said Yan, when asked what a student can do to best prepare for a career in STEM.

With all of these students entering the field equipped with more knowledge than any generation of STEM professionals before them, it’s all but certain that the industry will grow even more competitive than it already is.

However, since the demand for STEM jobs is at an all time high, it’s likely that there will be opportunities for any student dedicated enough to look for them.

“STEM is the fastest-growing field and the pandemic has not slowed it down,” says Seifert.

“While the remote working revolution brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic was felt across all industries, the changes to STEM were quite dependent on one’s actual position.”

STUDENT TESTIMONIAL:

Priyam Baruah UC SAN DIEGO RESEARCH SCHOLARS: BIOENGINEERING

Why did you choose to participate in this program?

Over the years, I’ve expressed my passion for biology by taking as many science classes as possible offered by our school, along with competing in numerous science competitions that have come my way. This year, I wanted to try something new to showcase my passion for biology by engaging in something that was hands-on; hence, I decided to take part in UC San Diego’s Research Scholars Program.

How did you decide which program was right for you?

Within Research Scholars, there were various sub-programs including Life Sciences, Marine Science, Medicine, Design Lab, and Bioengineering. I had grown a strong interest in biotechnology, biomedical science, and the novel methods used to study diseases over the past couple of years, so I decided to choose the bioengineering program.

What was a typical day in your program?

Within the Research Scholars Bioengineering Program, there were three sub programs including 1) Broad Overview and Techniques (BEBOAT), 2) Bioengineering Research Orientation Workshop (BE-ROW), and 3) Bioengineering Scholar High School Internship Project (BESHIP), which I’m currently working on. BE-BOAT was a two-week course I took in June in which we started the day learning about fascinating concepts–some of which included cell growth, bioreactors, and histopathology!

On Fridays, guest lecturers would come in to speak about their profession and the research they were engaged in. These presentations were then followed by breakout room sessions where we would be split up into groups and take part in numerous experiments using the lab equipment shipped to our homes. Some of these experiments included preparing cell media and utilizing microscopes to observe cell growth.

Finally, we would end the day by joining back into the main zoom room to report our findings to our peers. The BE-ROW course was the second sub-program I took in the month of July where we conducted research projects with a group of 3 to 4 people under the guidance of a current researcher. This four-week course was the highlight of my summer as it was an opportunity for me to dive deep into a project of my interest. A typical week involved 1) a lecture series that taught us the different aspects of research, 2) an opportunity for open discussions where each group would present their project progress, and 3) collaboration within a team to develop a focused project.

What was the most memorable moment of your program?

The most memorable part of my time as a Research Scholar was having the opportunity to engage in hands-on experiments despite the virtual nature of the program. Because physically being on campus was not possible due to the pandemic, lab equipment, including pipettes, well plates, and even an entire microscope, were shipped to our homes for us to perform experiments. Additionally, I was able to work with students from places across the country, and even the world, to carry out numerous efforts..

But most importantly, this program provided me with a gateway to strengthen my passion for biology in a way I’ve never experienced before. The life changing experience I had with this program would not have been possible without the efforts of the numerous people who guided us including Prof. Sah, Dr. Chen, Dr. Van Wong, Kaitlyn Strandberg, Nasim Nia, Rongjie Wu, Delaney Donelly, and Arya Suprana.

Your Future In STEM: WHAT CAN YOU EARN?

very year, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes data related to job trends across a number of different industries. This data includes information on occupation growth, the minimum level of education required for certain jobs and the annual median earnings for workers in a specific field.

If you’re looking forward to a career in STEM, there’s good news. According to the latest Labor Statistics report, jobs in computer and information technology are expected to grow 13% between 2020 to 2030, one of the fastest rates of growth across all industries. Employment in engineering fields is also expected to grow, at a slower rate of 6% over the next ten years. Even at this average growth rate however, nearly 150,000 jobs are expected to be added in the engineering

industry in the next decade.

Many of these new positions will be in the robotics industry, as more and more parts of the industrial economy become automated or machine-aided. Rapid job growth is also expected in other STEM fields like oil and gas extraction, cloud computing and information security.

As of May 2020, the median annual salary for workers in the computer and information technology industry was $91,250. The median annual wage in the engineering and architecture industry was $83,160. Both of these figures are significantly higher than the overall median wage across all industries, which comes in at $41,950.

Take a look at the selected jobs below, and see what you could earn in STEM!

How did you decide which program was right for you?

Last summer I chose the Engineering and Design Lab (EDL) program at Tufts because it gave me an opportunity to explore and learn more about Robotics. Due to Covid the program was on-line during the Summer of 2021. Nevertheless, we didn’t let that stop us and we had plenty of opportunities for learning and fun.

What was a typical day in your summer program?

Our day started with an Engineering & Design Instruction session, where we learned more about the sensors our robots had and how to best use them. After a brief break, we usually had the opportunity to learn and engage with a guest speaker who was usually an engineer in a specific field like Civil or Mechanical engineering. After lunch we worked on our robot, and coded it so that it could complete a series of predetermined tasks. The final session of the day was dedicated time to work on your team projects with supervisory assistance if needed.

What was the most memorable moment of your summer? The most memorable part of the program for me was the lectures we received from engineers, specifically about what the future of engineering will look like.

What advice do you have for teens looking at summer programs? My advice to other Teens is that this is an excellent program to learn more about the key technologies of the future. It is the right program for you if you are curious, and want to learn more about Robotics and Programming. It was a fun group of students and the teachers which made the program very open and friendly such that everyone, at all different levels, felt comfortable and included. I really enjoyed it and would highly recommend it to others.

YOUR FUTURE IN STEM: SCHOLARSHIPS FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

STEM education from a college or university is indispensable to a student’s career. The ability to work on projects with like minded peers and the opportunity to connect with established figures in the STEM world are just a few of the benefits that can come with attending a program like the ones listed in this guide.

Additionally, in most STEM fields, higher education is not optional. Many STEM jobs require a bachelor’s degree for even an entry-level position, and higher-paying occupations may require even more schooling.

However, like in all disciplines, the cost of higher education in STEM is only growing more expensive. That’s why we’ve put together this list of STEM scholarships for teens.

Some of the scholarships listed here have deadlines quickly approaching or require specific prerequisites for application, so be sure to read the terms of the scholarship fully before applying. We also encourage you to seek out opportunities closer to home, as many local communities have STEM scholarships available to students from their area. Additionally, if you’ve already applied to a college or university, be sure to inquire about whether or not they have any STEM-specific scholarships available.

Academic Growth

Through my summer course at BLI, I grew in too many ways to count. However, I can briefly touch on some of them. First of all, I grew academically. During the first part of the day, when Dr. Robin would teach us physiology and anatomy, I learned how to be observant and take thoughtful notes, as well as most importantly, asking relevant and beneficial questions. I learned that lectures are so much more than being given information, rather, one needs to actively listen and inquire when need be to fully gain the entire benefit of the lesson.

Hands-On Experience

In the second half of the day, when we would work in the lab, I learned how to apply topics from the lectures in a tangible manner. I was able to experience hands-on experiments in a way that I never thought I would be able to at my age. In fact, my dad is a neonatologist, and told me that he only learned how to tie sutures and surgical knots well into med school... Definitely not within the first three weeks. He also said that I’ve done more mock surgeries in my short three weeks than he has ever done in his life. It was incredible to be able to experiment with different parts of the body and physically attempt real life surgeries, such as a CABG or a gastric bypass.

Leadership and Collaboration

Aside from this, I also learned how to collaborate with my peers when we worked on presentations. I learned how to listen to everyone, take in their ideas, and compromise. I learned how to be effective in regards to research, and how to amplify my voice when presenting. Through all of this, I learned how to be a leader. In school, now the head of two clubs and an attendant of the Student Led Diversity Conference, I have been able to take the skills that I learned from the BLI course into so much more than just medical scenarios. While it was incredible to conduct so many mock surgeries, I learned much more than merely that-- I am now a stronger, more thoughtful, and more proactive person than I was before.

How to Make Your STEM RESUME STAND OUT

equiring students to understand a whole new kind of technical writing, high school resumes can sometimes be a difficult thing for teens to get right. Making your resume stand out in a competitive field like STEM can be even more daunting.

However, as a student interested in STEM, you may actually have a lot of flexibility when creating your resume. Contact information and relevant coursework should always be included, but from there, STEM students have an opportunity to tailor their resume to their specific scientific interests. This allows

anyone who reads your resume to see just how passionate you may be about a specific subject or field of study.

Summer programs, pre-college opportunities and afterschool options also allow for students interested in STEM to add relevant and impressive items to their resume. In fact, taking part in an out-of-school enrichment program like the ones listed in this guide is one of the very best ways to make your STEM resume shine.

However, there are plenty of other steps you can take as well. Looking for more on how to make your STEM resume stand out? Here’s 6 tips to help you get ahead!

2022 TeenLife Guide to Your Future In STEM16

1. CORRECTLY INCLUDE YOUR BASIC INFORMATION

No matter a student’s interest or intended career path, all high school resumes will have some things in common. Before focussing on achievements specific to STEM, be sure that your resume correctly displays your name, contact information, location, objective, and basic education experience. This may seem simple, but when you consider that one typo or piece of missing information could be the difference between hearing back from a college or not, it’s definitely worth double checking!

2. DEMONSTRATE YOUR SPECIFIC STEM INTERESTS

As a high school student, you may be worried that your job or internship experience in STEM falls short of what is wanted. Remember though that colleges are not just looking for experience but also a proven interest and dedication to a particular STEM field.

To that end, take some time to think about the accomplishments you’ve already achieved in STEM, no matter how small. This can include anything from school projects, relevant courses, or even in-class research. If you’re applying to a college in a specific STEM discipline, try and think about any school work you’ve done that shows your interest and ability in that field.

The type of work may determine which section of your resume you place it in, but if you really start to think about it, you might have more STEM experience than you realized!

3. INCLUDE STEM CLUBS OR EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

One of the best ways to make your STEM resume stand out is to take part in a wide range of different extracurricular STEM activities. This can include STEM-focussed groups at your school, like an on-campus robotics or math club, or STEMbased experiences outside of the classroom.

There’s an entire section of this guide dedicated to this exact type of out-of-school STEM enrichment, so if your own school is lacking in STEM-based options that interest you, be sure to check out the opportunities we’ve collected for you!

Any participation with organizations adjacent to STEM is great to include on your resume. This can include anything from work with 4H, science focussed summer camps and more. Demonstrating experience in clubs and activities like this can do wonders for making your resume stand out. It

also shows colleges or other organizations the specific areas of study that interest you.

4. INCLUDE EXPERIENCE OUT OF STEM

If you have prior experience working in a STEM role, great! Make sure to include that on your resume. However, it’s still important to include other, non-STEM based experiences if you can. Many colleges and universities are looking for diverse, well-rounded students, and while your STEM achievements may be impressive, don’t let them outshine your other hobbies and interests.

In short: be sure to include the things that make you who you are! If you were the captain of your school’s soccer team or the lead in the spring musical, try and find a place for such info on your resume. We can guarantee someone reading it will take note.

For students interested in STEM but lacking in STEMspecific experience, this step is even more important. That’s because students can use non-STEM experiences to demonstrate that they have skills that are easily transferable to the field. If you’ve worked at a job or been in a club where you’ve developed skills like critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and decision-making, then this is absolutely something you should be sure to emphasize on your resume, whether the experience was STEM-based or not.

5. TAILOR YOUR RESUME FOR THE POSITION YOU’RE APPLYING FOR

When using nya resume, you must tailor it specifically to what you are using it towards. Take some time to identify the things that the person reading your resume may be looking for. Whether it’s a job, internship or a collegiate position, you should be able to find out some info about the type of applicant that’s sought after. Consider how your experiences meet those criteria, and ensure that your resume speaks to them directly.

6. REVIEW IT!

Resume writing is no small feat, and very few people are experts right off the back. For this reason, the final but perhaps most important step in any resume writing process is to review it carefully. Take some time to look for spelling errors or formatting issues. You should also try and have a parent or teacher take a look over it. The more eyes that get a glance at your resume, the more opportunity to include feedback.

“Be sure to include the things that make you who you are!”

STUDENT TESTIMONIAL:

Iva Budina HARVARD UNIVERSITY SUMMER PROGRAMS FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, (Principles of Economics)

How did you decide which program was right for you?

The reason I decided to attend a college program for high school students was because I wanted to have a real college experience with top professors and a diverse group of students, including college students. I wanted to explore the field of economics as a potential major in college and further delve into in math, [and] I wanted to take a risk and challenge myself.

Why did you choose to participate in this program?

I knew I wanted to participate in the Harvard Secondary School Program from the start. I was enrolled in an intensive college-course in economics. I knew ahead of time that this is a very demanding course, so I was ready to experience some challenges. At the same time, this is a unique opportunity that many high school kids are unable to experience. I wanted to prepare myself for the rigor of college. Moreover, I wanted to use this summer to explore the field of economics and hear first-hand from world-renowned scholars. Within these seven weeks, I convinced myself that I wanted to have a deeper understanding in this field. This moment was very important for me as I decided that I would be studying economics in college. Additionally, I was excited to meet peers who are excited to learn and challenge themselves. I am so grateful to have chosen this program as a high school student.

What was a typical day in your program?

Since the pandemic had just started, the program was held online. While I would have preferred to have in-person interactions, I still enjoyed the program and appreciated that Harvard did everything possible to swiftly switch to virtual mode and to allow me to participate. The faculty and staff worked hard to ensure that students would still enjoy their Harvard summer programs online. Although this course was a big time commitment, there was programming throughout the day that allowed for study breaks. Since the time was getting close for my college search, I wanted to ensure I had some time to devote to college applications. For students like me, the Secondary School Program wanted to ensure that they could help us in every way possible, so they hosted information sessions as well as application workshops. On other days, they hosted resume workshops. Every day there was something new to look forward to.

What was the most memorable moment of your program?

I will always remember the lecture about behavioral patterns of decision making. We played a game called the ultimatum game, and our professor gave his new book to the winners; I ended up winning so I got his new book, and I was very excited.

What advice do you have for teens looking at programs?

Definitely do it. Harvard Summer School is a great way to transition into college. Explore a topic or subject you haven’t had the chance to learn in high school.when you’re an actor, so start now!
