SAFETY TIPS By: Lanette Teeter Safety Director

WORK SAFELY Your Family Is Waiting For You At Home 6

Fall is upon us, once again! Are we ready? Yes...maybe... no... Who knows what this new season will bring? There are many changes that this season brings, but we need to continue being safe in every season. Fall means that the kids are all back in school, harvest is just around the corner, wheat planting is underway, and old man winter is creeping ever so close. Just makes my bones ache thinking about it. Kids are back in school. What does that have to do with safety? Well, that means they are walking along the streets or riding their bicycles to and from school. They are everywhere. Kids tend to be very focused on what they are doing at the moment and not what is going on around them. They just need to get to school or be where their friends are at that moment. Be very diligent around the school zones, football fields, and other areas where school kids tend to gather in groups. Farmers are gearing up for a very busy season. The wheat seed needs to be in the ground, and the fall crops are almost ready to harvest. This is a very hectic time for farm families. Please take time to practice safety, too. Careless acts are the most common cause of accidents, and are also the most preventable. Don’t take short cuts just to save time. We all tend to become a little complacent about things. We tend to try to operate on auto pilot. No matter how many times a task is done, it’s important to give it your full attention every time, and be aware of the job hazards. The intersections have grown up in weeds and tall fall crops. This makes it very difficult to see oncoming side traffic. Dirt flying with moving vehicles on dirt roads also makes for poor visibility. Take a little longer to look both ways before you pull out into the intersection. Deer are starting to be on the move. Their nice quiet hiding place in the corn fields are all disappearing, and the start of rut will be beginning soon. Just remember if you see one deer, there are probably several more you can’t see just out of your line of sight. Please take a few moments and think about the task at hand. That old adage, “Look before you leap,” can and will serve you well in all situations, not just safety. Take care in all you do.
