THE CULTIVATION of TECHNOLOGY

ROONEY FARMS RECOMMEND

By: Cassie Teeter

Teeter Irrigation, Marketing

2

Rooney Farms is owned and operated by Pat Rooney, his son Bret, and Bret’s wife, Carlie. Their farming operation, located west of Satanta, KS, has been producing corn, milo, wheat and soybeans for over 90+ years, which has been passed down through four generations. The Rooneys, like many farmers, seem to think that there is never enough daylight in a day, which constantly posed the question: How can we be more productive with our time? The Rooney farm started using telemetry, a radiobased technology, to check their pivots back in the 1990’s. They could check their pivots from home computers, but this didn’t give them the mobility options that many farmers desire. Bret heard about AgSense® Field Commander from Teeter Irrigation, and was immediately intrigued by the versatility and freedom opportunities. They now have 14 of their 25 irrigation systems operating with AgSense technology. “We would check all 25 pivots at least two times a day, wasting more than an hour just driving to each system,” states Bret. “With AgSense, I can look at my phone app to see that everything is running correctly, change directions, or shut it off.” Bret also says that he loves having the immediate notification of system problems. If something is wrong, his phone sends him an alert, and he can tend to the situation right then. “In the past, we would check the systems in the morning, and everything would be fine. Then, we would go out around 4:00 that evening, and find that there was a problem that probably happened around 10:00 AM. We would then have to start a big project late in the evening, when we could’ve been notified that morning that there was a problem,” states Bret. Technology is something that Rooney Farms will never eliminate from their operations, according to Bret. He states that their time is too valuable, and they strive to become more efficient each day. AgSense® allows them to do just that.

BEAT THE HEAT SUMMER IS HERE!!! The kids are out of school, vacations are planned. It’s time to play baseball or softball, go fishing, go swimming or just slow down and take it easy for a while. For many, this is a true statement, but for others, this is one very busy season. Farmers are hurrying to get fall crops in the ground, and also getting ready to harvest wheat. No matter what your summer plans are, please take time to think just a little bit about safety. Let’s start with the most obvious summer time safety issues. HEAT comes to mind and should be at the top of everyone’s list. Humans and animals all deal with heat in different manners, but once either one gets too hot and dehydration starts to set in. Trouble won’t be too far behind. The young, the elderly, or sick are at the highest risk of heat illnesses, however anyone can be a victim of heat illness. Start the day by drinking water, before you ever go outside. Water is the best source of hydration for anyone. Electrolyte drinks are good, but only in moderation. 16 ounces of electrolytes per day should be sufficient for most people. Some of those types of drinks have too much sugar in them and are not beneficial in excess. Sodas, alcoholic beverages and energy drinks are also not the best source of fluids, as most of them have caffeine, which can have a diuretic effect on the body. WATER IS THE BEST BET.

Don’t leave children or pets in a vehicle, even with the car running or even for a few minutes. The temperature climbs too high and too fast even with the air conditioner running. SUNBURNS can also a source summertime ills. Most of us have had at least one bad sunburn in our life, and I bet you can remember it like it was yesterday. They are painful and if bad enough can leave scars. Now, we are being told, skin cancer can be a result of overexposure to the sun. PROTECT YOUR SKIN. Wear a hat and long sleeved shirt, use sunscreen and apply it often throughout the day, and if at all possible, work outside earlier in the morning and late in the afternoon. The last suggestion is difficult, especially when 14 hour days are the norm. However, the other suggestions are fairly easy to follow. Summer time ROAD SAFETY suggestions. Pay attention to your driving and your surroundings. The weeds at the county road intersections are growing taller every day. Harvest is fast approaching and the grain trucks will be loaded and headed to the elevator. Watch out for them. They need time to get stopped. They cannot slam on the breaks and stop on a dime. There are bicyclists on the road. They have the right of way. Don’t be a distracted driver.

NO TEXTING AND DRIVING. Have you tried not talking on the phone while you drive lately? I would like to challenge all of you to give it a try. Tell your family, friends and co-workers that you will not be answering your cell phone while you drive. Let them know you will check your phone and return their calls. Pull off the road to check your phone and make your calls or better yet if the call is not an emergency, return the call when you get to your destination. Whatever did we do before cell phones? Yes, they are convenient, but when you are driving they are a distraction. Try driving undistracted for a while. Some companies even have cell phone policies that entail shutting off the phone and putting it in the glove compartment when the employee is driving. I tried it for a month. It was strange at first, but once everyone accepted that I would not answer my phone, even with my hands free device, the calls during my drive times started to decrease. Did I stick with it? No, but I am planning to start it again in the next week. Wish me luck and again, I would like to challenge all of you to give it a try, too. Have a safe summer!
