Hampshire cricket legend Sean Ervine is aiming to carve himself a new sporting career in professional golf.
Simon Dyson, former top 10 player on the European Tour, has retired from professional golf after a 20-year career. The Manchester-based Yorkshireman, 41, who had surgery on a wrist injury three years ago, will now concentrate on a coaching academy he set up in Cheshire. His career brought him not far short of £10million in prize money and six European Tour wins. “I’m so excited about this next chapter,” he told BBC Radio York. “It’s like being back to when I first got my European Tour card. I’m just looking forward to helping other people improve. “Whether it’s for the monthly medal, or a minor tour event, it’ll still be a buzz for me. “I’ve gone in to partnership with Mottram Hall, working on elite golf performance which taps in to all sides - physical, mobility and the mental side. “I’ll be working on exactly how far players hit a full shot with each club. So few really know. And on the psychology side of playing, course management, visualisation of shots - especially the ones you don’t like the look of before you hit them.”
The 35-year-old father of two already has a handicap of one and is working towards joining the European Challenge Tour. He will be based on familiar territory, the Ageas Bowl’s Boundqry Lakes course, as he polishes his game works towards joining the Algarve Pro Golf Tour. Ervine told the Southern Daily Echo: “It’s something I’m looking into it the moment. I play off one with very little coaching so if I can spend a little bit of time doing it who knows where it would lead. “It would be a pretty decent story if it were to come true. It’s something I think I need to do. I don’t want to get a few years down the line and really wish I gave golf a go. “I’m trying to organise a coach to work with, try to get a few sponsors to help out, enter tour school in March, and go from there.”

Doctor, can I please have a prescription for golf on the NHS? The national press certainly had some fun with a recent report about the health benefits of golf for older people. In the Daily Mail, the witty columnist Littlejohn, under the headline Golf on the NHS? Are they trying to kill us all off? he wrote: “They should fire all the caddies and hire stretcher bearers.” But behind this was a perfectly serious joint report from ukactive, England Golf and Mytime Active.
Older people, it suggested, could be referred by their GPs for golf lessons to improve patients’ physical, mental and emotional health and wellbeing. The suggestion arose from pilot research called ‘Golf on Referral’, under which parents at risk of chronic conditions were referred for a six-week course on behaviour change through a programme of golf lessons. The results showed that participants trebled their amount of exercise per week as a result and had increased life satisfaction levels alongside

reductions in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Why Custom Golf Clubs Will Improve Your Game Your golf game will improve with a set of custom golf clubs because you will have equipment that is specifically made not only to your unique physical characteristics but also to your playing abilities. Why can I say that? People are like Snowflakes, no two are alike Consider these differences between golfers: In general, women golfers are shorter than male golfers and likely to have smaller hands and not swing as fast, therefore requiring more flexible shafts and smaller grips. Golfers who are older may suffer from hand or joint related pain and may require grips that might be larger and softer. They may also need graphite shafts to help dampen some of the unwanted vibration at impact. Golfers who are beginning or are less skilled should have different equipment than those who can strike the ball in the middle of the face on a consistent basis. If you score is high, then you should seek as much game-improvement features into the clubs as possible. Shorter golfers generally need shorter clubs and taller golfers may require more length. All of these factors must be taken into account when purchasing a set of golf clubs. By properly fitting the golfer according their size, needs and ability the best possible golf set will be created yielding the lowest scores. Every pro golfer has their clubs custom made. Do they know something you don’t?
If you are buying your clubs off-the-shelf, you are making a major mistake. Off-theshelf golf clubs are made for the majority of the population. Put three people side by side and measure height, look at their swing, check their swing-speed, and calculate the differences each person is to each other (strictly speaking of the golf swing, and golfers strengths); and you will see major differences. There are so many factors that are different between these 3 golfers, it can be enough to make your head spin. How can one golf club work perfectly for all 3 golfers? It can’t and it doesn’t. Now if you get your clubs custom built, the custom builder will check your wrist-tofloor measurement, swing-speed, loft angle, lie measurement, height, age, sex, and your glove size. This is the basic formula. A good custom fitter will watch you hit a bucket of balls at the driving range, and see your weaknesses. They will also ask you about 20 other questions. When they make golf clubs for you, you will see a huge difference. The golf clubs will fit you like a glove. You see, if you buy off-the-shelf clubs, you are conforming to the golf club. However, if the clubs are custom built just for you, the golf club conforms to you. As a golfer, you know how bad a change in your swing can mess up your game. This is why you should not conform to the golf club. I don’t care if you have the most uncharacteristic swing, a custom builder can build a golf club that you will feel very comfortable with. It’s important not to get custom golf clubs mixed up with fitted golf clubs, as there is a stark difference. Fitted golf clubs start with a set of standard golf clubs from a club manufacturer which are then fitted to be more suitable to your personal traits. Custom golf clubs are completely different, as they are entirely custom from the ground up and will fit you perfectly. Don’t buy into the hype of the latest club trying to boast the best in club technology - keep it simple with a set of custom golf clubs which you know you can depend on time and time again. Mass produced clubs are nothing but a hassle, opt instead

for clubs which you know will meet your specific and unique playing style. Many people think that custom fitting is only for an expert golfer. This is totally wrong. Anyone even the beginner can use it and in fact, they’ll find it easier. So, whenever you reach the point where you need to replace your old set of clubs, take this opportunity to get a new custom fitting clubs. Custom fitting won’t cure all your bad shots. Coaching will sort that out. But if you do make a good swing, then the custom golf club will arrive correctly at impact and should produce a straight shot at your target. That alone will save shots during a round. After a custom club fitting, golfers will feel confident that
they have made a good decision in their investment. The added confidence will enhance performance almost as much as the custom fitting itself. California Dreaming …followed by a bit of a nightmare for Hampshire’s Rose Justin Rose, world number one and Hampshire’s favourite golfing son, laid down a marker with is best season’s start for 17 years as he won the opening event at Torrey Pines. Rose brushed off the challenge of Australian Adam Scott to secure victory in the Farmers Insurance Open by two shots. The 38-year-old, associated with North Hants Golf Club since he was a youngster, wobbled with three bogeys in the opening five holes of the final round but played the last 12 in five under to card a threeunder 69 and win on 21 under. “I haven’t won in January since about 2002, so this feels great,” said the 2013 US Open champion.
“I am really happy. I challenged the status quo and changed everything up in the search to try to get better.” Rose switched golf club brands at the end of last year, and won with new caddie Gareth Lord on his bag for just the second time, with his regular caddie Mark Fulcher recovering from heart surgery. “I felt comfortable with the way I drove the ball this week on a tough test,” added Rose. “A whole new look for me. But I don’t mind it, if it is going to produce this golf.” The victory secured Rose a 10th US PGA Tour title and his first win since the Turkish Airlines Open on the European Tour in November. Scott said: “He’s the number one player in the world, and he’s showing why.
Even when he was a little off, he kept it together.” But, as if to prove the vagaries of golf, along came the season’s second event – and Rose actually missed the cut for only the second time in 36 tournaments. The hiccough came in the Saudi International, won by American Dustin Johnson. Rose followed his opening round of 70 with a twoover 72. He said afterwards: “The mistakes I made were due to trying to chase the cut and that doesn’t happen if I had putted a bit better the first day. “I actually played really nicely on day one. Today I felt not as good, but the mistakes were more because I was behind the eight-ball trying to get into the tournament.”

Summer’s looking very hot for the PGA cohorts The PGA in England and Wales will again feature four top-quality Order of Merit events to decide the leading players in the South West and Wales, writes Peter Godsiff. The venues remain the same for the second successive year as the West Region PGA Championship, the most prestigious and longest-running tournament on the calendar, is again being hosted at the outstanding Players Club, near Bristol, on August 13-14. The exciting new fixture list reveals several more pro-ams at new ventures. The Manor House at Castle Combe and Fingle Glen in Devon stage regional proams for the first time. Other new venues this year include Churston, Clevedon, Lilley Brook, Ross-on-Wye, Chippenham and Enmore Park. The country’s top-rated links courses again feature. The season opens on April 2 with the Asbri Golf Cornish Festival where outstanding championship venues Trevose and St Enodoc again add lustre to the largest pro-am gathering in the country. The Point at Polzeath becomes the third venue. The North Cornwall resort has been extensively developed by Jeremy Davies who has made major improvements to the course and added accommodation and extensive leisure facilities. The season closes with the 54-hole North Devon Links Festival at Royal North Devon, the oldest course in the country, and both Saunton championship courses on September 30-October2. The Order of Merit programme opens for the 11 th time with the Total Triumph Classic hosted at Oake Manor by former club captain and PGA benefactor Neil Mossman. Once again amateurs will have a chance to play alongside the leading PGA professionals on the first day in their own strokeplay competition. The Players Championship, won last year by Order of Merit champion Sion Bebb (Morlais Castle), continues at Cumberwell Park, Wiltshire’s leading golf complex on June and is followed by the Championship which embraces four categories. Everything builds up to the decisive final event at The Point at Polzeath. Young professionals under the age of 30 and club assistants will again feature the Sprint League in association with Titleist and FootJoy. The earlyseason strokeplay event returns to Minehead, Radyr, Cumberwell Park and Weston-super-Mare. and will be decided at Tiverton. Young developing players will be rewarded by an approximate Order of Merit bonus pool of £3,500 and a mini equipment contract with Titleist & FootJoy for the leading five players. It is the kind of vandalism which would get any amateur banned for life from any club – and probably reported to the police. He needs help. And it should come before his next explosion totally ruins our stored-up admiration and memories of a superb talent. We do not want to be standing on the sidelines watching the descent of another flawed genius, another star whose loss of control will be remembered at least as long, if not longer, than the joy and thrills he has given us as we watched him play. His legacy should not be smeared by his own short fuse.

My research indicates it’s the established courses, originally created by land owning families with a tradition of working and sporting dogs that are the dog friendly clubs. Top clubs such as The New Zealand Club believe dogs are part of their club and if you don’t have a four legged friend, then you can rent one for the day from the Pro Shop. Goodwood Golf Club also positively welcome dogs, in fact, they have a special Kennels Dog Membership which includes a personalised dog bowl and special dog ice-cream. Free Beer Sets the Pace at Palmares Golfers at Palmares Beach & Golf Resort, in the Algarve, raised a collective glass after winning an important battle in the war on slow play. As well as introducing the new R&A rules and recommendations, which are designed to speed up play, the philosophy behind the event was embraced by the participants – spurred on by some radical local rules to act as an extra temptation to complete the nine holes of Texas Scramble as quickly as possible. One incentive in particular – the prospect of free beer in the clubhouse up until one and hour and 45 minutes after the shotgun start – certainly did the trick for the winning team from the UK as they toasted their success. It meant Brad Walker, Steve Smith and Derek Sanders – with an average age of 62 – enjoyed an hour of quenching their collective thirst with complimentary hospitality after tearing round nine holes in just 45 minutes. Although their score was immaterial, it was still impressive as they posted a one-under-par gross total, while their nearest challengers joined them at the bar just a few minutes later after posting times of 50 and 55 minutes respectively.
Aside from other incentives of replacing all lost balls with a brand new sleeve, the threat of punishment also served its purpose with one-shot penalties handed out for: searching for lost balls, practice swings, hitting provisional balls or reading greens from both sides. The resort’s operations director, António Pinto Coelho, believes the tournament will now become a fixture at the multi award-winning course, which was extensively redesigned by Robert Trent Jones Jnr in 2011. He said: “It was a big success. Everyone got into the spirit – especially with a complimentary shot of Medronho before the start. It was just a great time and got back to golf being fun. “Most people said playing faster made them have more fun and didn’t affect the final score – not that the score mattered for this tournament. “Seeing some of the participants in their 70s running between shots was quite a sight and we’ve already had many requests to repeat the experience. It will be back again in the near future and perhaps we will come up with a few extra local rules to enjoy!”
Leading players selected for England women and girls’ squads Leading players have been named in the England women and girls’ squads for the 2019 season. There’s seven players in the home-based women’s squad; eight in the overseas squad and nine in the girls’ squad. New faces in the women’s squad include English amateur champion Georgina Blackman (pictured), who recently finished third in the Portuguese women’s open. Cara Gainer and Emily Toy, who recently represented England in Australia, also join the squad. During the Australian tour, Toy won the New South Wales stroke play championship. Emily Brennan, who scored a top 10 in the 2019 South American amateur, and Caley McGinty, winner of the Liphook scratch cup, are also included. They join Lily May Humphreys, the Curtis Cup player and Scottish open amateur champion, while Nicola Slater, the English women’s match play titleholder, moves up from the girls’ squad.
There’s five new members of the girls’ squad who all made an impact last season: Jess Baker, Rafiah Banday, Rosie Belsham, Ellie Gower and Daisy Kennedy. They take their places beside Charlotte Heath, Thalia Kirby, Mimi Rhodes and Caitlin Whitehead, the European Young Masters and Asia Pacific champion. The overseas squad is made up of established England internationals who are pursuing their education in the USA and includes Curtis Cup players India Clyburn, Annabell Fuller and Alice Hewson.

New faces feature in England men’s squads A host of new faces have played their way into the two England men’s squads for 2019. Spanish amateur champion Billy McKenzie (pictured) and Tom Plumb, who was recently third in the South American amateur, have shot straight into the men’s squad. They are joined by three players promoted from the A squad: Bailey Gill, Ben Jones, a semi-finalist in the recent New South Wales amateur, and Tom Sloman. Set up with Power & Purpose and get a Spring back into your Swing This month I’m going to talk to you about feeling powerful and standing over your golf ball athletically. Whatever level of golfer you are your posture can really start to get sloppy if you don’t keep it in check. So here are a few really easy drills to help you feel strong over the ball and help you to make contact with the turf and finish in a balanced state. If you are someone who fails to get to their finish position, feels wobbly as they swing or perhaps you’ve been struggling with mis-hitting the ball completely or losing power. Well all these things can come down to whether or not you are addressing the ball athletically.
Don’t be a toe tapper! Take this simple test and heel tap your way to success. Set up to your ball and feel ready to hit, before you do ask yourself this simple question. Can you tap your heels freely up and down or does it feel far easier to give those toes a tap. If you are a toe tapper then you will find you have limited stability and your game will really suffer as a result. So get into a position so that you can easily tap your heels up and down and plant that weight over the balls of your feet. Your arms should be just hanging down and grip on the club should be light.
Unslump that hump Check out your posture in the mirror or get a friend to video you. Are you hunched over or powerfully angular? If you are slouched over the ball then again you are in a weak position even before you have taken the club away. Stand up tall and feel you are tipped from your hips maintaining a lovely straight spine angle as your arms hang down. Your knees should be gently flexed with your weight on the balls of your feet as if you’re about to run somewhere or return a serve in tennis. There should be definite angles in your posture. A tip from the hips and a flex in your knees. If you are tipped from the waist your spine will seem curved and you certainly won’t feel ready and raring to go. Plus your balance will be questionable. Get ready to go and see how easy it is to brush the grass after the ball and hold your finish position.

Challenge yourself to success I have played guitar in different bands for many years. In all those years I’ve pretty much improvised all my solos, hardly ever trying to copy or play tunes exactly as they were originally played. After all these years, I now feel it is time for me to learn to read music and expand my playing ability and, hopefully, take me to the next level! Well, I started a few weeks ago and, to say the least, I’m finding it very difficult, I feel like a total beginner again. Whether you’re trying to get better at playing guitar or golf, you have to challenge yourself to improve. Trying to find ways of challenging yourself when you are practicing is important. Take chipping for instance. Rather than just standing there and hitting one shot over and over, see how many times you can get up and down out of ten attempts from difficult places. Have a match with a friend. Imagine that you have to make an up and down to win the monthly medal or a tournament. Hit ten random shots from different places and set yourself a score for getting them all in the hole. If it takes twenty six the first time, try and beat that score the next time. To improve, you need to find ways of putting some pressure on yourself. Make the practice as difficult as possible. In this way you can emulate the tension you feel when you are playing, so that you can get used to it. Everyone feels tension - it’s how you handle it that counts. When you practice hitting full shots, don’t just hit balls, make every shot count. Maybe refine your pre shot routine. Be disciplined enough to do it on every shot, so that you can more easily take your practice to the course. I remember watching the great Jack Nicklaus(pictured) practice. On every single shot he hit, he went through the same pre shot routine as he used on the course. Now he could definitely take it to the course! Don’t just stand there trying to hit that elusive straight one. Try to hit high and low, hooked and faded shots. Doing this will certainly help you gain mastery of your swing. If you’re not sure how to shape the ball then either take a lesson from a Pro or ask someone who you think can help you.
Get your posture and all your fundamentals checked this month with your PGA professional. It will pay dividends as the season gets underway. Solid posture will result in solid impact position and solid golf shots. What’s not to love about that! Putting yourself under a bit of pressure will really help your game. Challenge yourself. The kind of practice that can have a detrimental effect on your game is, as I have mentioned, just hitting shot after shot, searching for the miracle swing that’s going to hit it straight. This can lead to a lack of confidence and confusion. Often the thing that worked for those few shots will be gone the next day.
