It is perhaps still premature to write off Tiger Woods. But despite declaring himself as back to his best after spine surgery, the 14-time Major champion still looked far from matching or ever beating Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18.

At Royal Liverpool, he barely made the cut and finished 69th - a staggering 23 shots behind McIlroy.

Death of coaching legend Bob GREATLY-respected golf coach Bob Torrance, father of Ryder Cup-winning captain Sam, has died aged 82.

Torrance helped Irishman Padraig Harrington win back-to-back Open titles in 2007 and 2008. Sam Torrance, who captained Europe to Ryder Cup success in 2002, ‘Sad day - my dad just passed away peacefully in his sleep.’

Bob Torrance, described by Harrington as the best swing coach in the world, had been battling cancer. Among the tributes, Iain Carter, BBC Sport’s golf correspondent, tweeted: ‘One of golf’s great gentlemen and a wonderful teacher.’ Ian Poulter: ‘An amazing man who coached so many great players.’

Instead, here was an imperious Rory McIlroy completing three quarters of a career Grand Slam at the age of 25.

The Northern Irishman admits he has rediscovered his passion for the game after a tumultuous year which began with him feeling ‘brain dead’ and missing the cut at Muirfield last year.

Hampshire star’s double in U.S. and Scotland HAMPSHIRE’S Justin Rose has established himself alongside Sir Nick Faldo in the pantheon of great English golfers.

Rose’s victory at the Congressional pulled him alongside Faldo for the most titles claimed on U.S. soil by an Englishman since 1945.

A transatlantic flight and one week later, Rose continued his winning streak and completed a superb double with a clinical, frontrunning performance to win the Scottish Open.

His faultless final-round 65, including six birdies, ensured he was in the 60s in all four of his circuits at Royal Aberdeen.

‘It’s a privilege to win this great championship,’ he said. ‘This is my first professional win in Scotland so it means a lot.

This is a great tournament - there’s definitely something special about playing golf up here and the golfing crowd are so knowledgeable.’

At the Quicken Loans National, 33-year-old Rose, who learned his golf at the North Hants Golf Club in Fleet and is still closely linked to the club, won at the first hole of a play-off.

The victory gave him his sixth PGA Tour title and first since his glorious U.S. Open triumph last year.

ERRIE Ball, the last survivor of the first Masters of 1934, has died in Florida at the grand age of 103.

The only man to have won more often in the same timeframe on the world’s toughest tour is Tiger Woods, who played in this year’s Quicken but failed to make the cut in his comeback event after injury.

Rain-lashed Congressional gave up a in 2011, and Rose suggested the course wanted to make amends.

‘I think Congressional wanted its reputation back,’ said Rose. ‘It tested all of us getting

to four under par to win this tournament. It’s great to win on a course like this because you can’t luck into it. I had to rely on different parts of my game all week.

‘It hasn’t been lost on me that I haven’t won for a year. It’s a huge boost confidence-wise.’

McDOWELL AGAIN CABRERA AGAIN GRAEME McDowell started the final day eight shots adrift of the leader but still retained his French Open title as Kevin Stadler let slip a four-shot advantage.

TWO-TIME major winner Angel Cabrera got back on the winning trail as he shot a final-round 64 to claim victory at the Greenbrier Classic.

McDowell’s final-round 67 gave him a one-shot victory as Stadler, who finished in a tie for second with Thongchai Jaidee, missed a three-foot putt on the 18th to force a play-off at Le Golf National.

The Argentine finished 16 under par to win by two shots from American George McNeill, whose final round of 61 included a hole in one at the eighth.

McDowell said: ‘This is a really good kick-start to my summer. I feel very fortunate. Kevin Stadler is a great, great player. I really needed this victory. It’s a special one for me.’

Bangor-born Errie, pictured above, sailed to America in 1930, arriving on the day Bobby Jones won the U.S. Amateur at Merion, sealing the Grand Slam. It was Jones who later encouraged him to travel, opening his eyes to the possibilities for a young player.

Errie never won a Major and rarely featured at the top end of the sport, but had a remarkable life. He spent his early years as a budding professional under the watchful eye of his father, Harry, the pro at Lancaster Golf Club.

His great uncle, John, in 1890 was the first amateur to win The Open and won a remarkable eight British Amateur titles.

As a youngster, Errie watched Harry Vardon play, and Bobby Jones was a big influence on his life, while he remembered Tommy Armour as ‘a fine player with a caustic tongue’.

In an interview in his later years with BBC Scotland’s Tom English, Errie recounted his time trying to teach Edward, Duke of Windsor, how to play the game with Mrs Simpson by his side the whole time.

‘I hit it very solidly,’ he said. ‘The work I’ve done has paid off.’

The win was the Northern Ireland man’s since the same event last year and boosted his chances of a place on the European Ryder Cup team at Gleneagles next month.

McNeill’s hole in one was one of two during the final round as Bud Cauley holed his tee shot at the par-three 18th.

Hall had delayed turning pro due because of a combination of funding concerns and wanting to play in the Curtis Cup. She finished joint 29th in the Women’s British Open.

Georgia Hall: ‘It’s very exciting’

‘It’s very exciting,’ she told BBC Radio Solent.

‘I’ve wanted to do this since I was seven.’ Her career highlights so far include winning double gold at the 2013 Youth Olympic Festival and last year's British Amateur Championship.

One of the major misconceptions about golf in the Canary Islands is that it is a winter destination. It is a fact that over 92% of the players come in the winter months, particularly from Northern Europe, where the courses are closed, resulting in a status of near saturation on all the islands. However, with a climate that offers all year round

sunshine, cooling breezes and very little rain, it is a delight to play at any time of the year.

Spring and autumn are perfect times, with summer just as attractive, and with much reduced green fees and hotel costs the ideal destination. Having played at all times of the year, I have no hesitation in choosing May and September as the ideal times for my visits.

For those who have visited Arizona, the golf courses at Salobre will bring back instant recall, for here there is a touch of the desert.

The courses have been laid out in a region of canyons, barrancas and hills and complimented by lakes and streams, hazards that seem to attract like a magnet. The South course was designed by Roland Favre, a disciple of Robert Trent Jones, and there is certainly a hint of the American maestro in the character of the layout. From every part

of the course the scenery has to be seen to be believed, it is hard not to just stand and stare at the harsh beauty of the landscape that has been supplanted by a green oasis.

The course which is in superb condition tests the patience, but the excellent greens make good putting a great redeemer. The North course which is the younger of the two, is the work of Ron Kirby, and what a spectacular course it is. From the first tee, a shot over the hillside and a dogleg left to the green, with a gaping canyon for any shot drifting right, the demands do not stop. This is a beautiful beast of a course, that tests every club in the bag, and the third hole makes sure that you understand that early in the round. A dogleg right, downhill, and a green protected by another huge barranca, absolutely no bale out on this hole. The short holes are spectacular but have very little margin for error, but if you play well then there is no greater satisfaction. From the normal tees it is only just over 5000 metres, but even the short par fours are a challenge.

The two courses are supplemented by a first class Practice area and club fitting and performance centre, where everything you could need to hone your game, or equipment is available. It is no surprise that the Resort was the winner of the IAGTO European Destination of the Year in 2013.

Meloneras, both a short drive away. However it is well worth noting that there are two courses in the North are reached by motorway, and less than half an hour drive.

The previously mentioned Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas and the El Cortijo Club de Campo, six miles from the capital. This latter is one of the longest courses in Spain, built into a fantastic plantation of one hundred year old palm trees, it follows three valleys filled with flowering native shrubs which provide a very colourful backdrop. With six lakes and panoramic sea views it is well worth the short drive.

The quality of the hotels on Gran Canaria, especially the Sheraton Salobre, matches the quality of the golf, set at the highest standard, in the highest five star category, and fully justifying the rating.

For those who have yet to visit Gran Canaria, there are surprises awaiting, superb year round sunny weather, wonderful hotel accommodation, peace and tranquillity, and for the golfer a choice of some of the best courses you will want for a golfing excursion.

• In the Hugh James Boys’ Order of Merit, Jack Davidson (Llanwern) was the best placed Welsh junior at the Welsh Open Youths held at Pennard GC. Davidson carded rounds of 69, 69, 68 and 68 to finish 7 shots behind the winner Harry Hall (West Cornwall).

He moves up in to 2nd place on the Hugh James table with 105 points (50 for making the cut and 55 for his finishing position.

Two further juniors made the cut – Callum Dale (Pennard) and Gaelen Trew (Wentworth) – and each gained 50 points for their performance.

• Thomas Williams (Wrexham) followed up his performance at the Clwyd Open by winning the North Wales Boys held at Rhuddlan GC and Abergele GC. Williams carded rounds of 67, 71, 76 and 70 to win by 9 shots from David Ramsay (Mold) who went round in 69, 73, 70 and 72.

The top three was completed by Ben Chamberlain (Padeswood & Buckley) who ended 2 shots behind Ramsay after rounds of 72, 74, 71 and 69. Williams gains 150 Hugh James points to move in to 3rd place overall, Ramsay takes home 90 and Chamberlain 60.

IT’S the old story: you wait ages at the bus stop and then two buses arrive together.

So it has been with Colin Montgomerie’s golf. He had a stellar tour career which needed only a Major to top it off, but it eluded him for 24 years.

Monty, five times a runner-up in 71 Major appearances on the main tour, joined the senior ranks - walked away with the first Major of his career, the Senior PGA. And now, just seven weeks later, a second one has come along - the U.S. Senior Open.

The 51-year-old Scot won at in Edmond, Oklahoma, coming back from four shots behind overnight leader Gene Sauers to force a three-hole play-off which he won.

He became the only fifth golfer – after Gary Player (1988), Jack Nicklaus (1991), Hale Irwin (1998) and Roger Chapman (2012) – to lift both titles in the same season.

Now he has the chance to complete the treble in Wales, the country where as captain he led Europe to Ryder Cup glory four years ago.

An historic ‘Grand Slam’ is in his sights at the at Royal Porthcawl. Only Player in 1988 managed the clean sweep of Majors on the European Senior Tour.

And with Montgomerie feeling that his game is approaching the same level as in his prime in the late 1990s, the eight-time European Tour Number One heads to Porthcawl flying high. ‘I’m really on top of the world right now,’ he said. ‘It’s a fabulous feeling’.

Zanotti, 31, shot a final day 65 to finish on 19 under and beat Henrik Stenson, Rafa Cabrera-Bello and Gregory Havret in a dramatic play-off.

Simon Dyson was the highest-placed Englishman, a shot back on 18 under alongside Wales’ Jamie Donaldson.

TEENAGE sensation Matthew Fitzpatrick has accepted a sponsor’s invitation to play in the National Bank of Oman Golf Classic at Almouj Golf The Wave, Muscat, in October.

The 19-year-old was only one of 11 players, which included the victorious Martin Kaymer, to shoot under par on the final day of the U.S. Open.

Fitzpatrick’s 69 earned him an 11-over par total of 291 and another trophy for becoming low amateur.

Fitzpatrick won the same prize at The Open Championship at Muirfield last summer.

Golf drives £3billion into the economy GOLF is worth a massive £3.4 billion annually to the economy of England and employs nearly 50,000 people.

The value of the game is revealed in a new report, commissioned by the England Golf Partnership and prepared by Sports Marketing Surveys Ltd.

It shows that one person in every 19 in England plays golf at least once a year – a total of 2.8m - and that the sport’s contribution to the economy includes:

The report says: ‘Even in difficult economic times and against a background of concerns that the game may not be being played to the extent that it once was, it is still a huge contributor to the English economy with an economic contribution of £3.4 billion.’

Roger Moreland, the partnership’s Chief Operating Officer, commented: ‘Golf is hugely important to the economy of England and has the potential to make an even greater contribution. This report shows the scale of the golf industry and underlines the importance of developing the game and growing the number of regular golfers and club members.’

In total, golf’s annual contribution is equal to £61 for every man, woman and child in the country. This is expected to grow as the national economy improves and is coupled with robust efforts to recruit and retain new golfers and to encourage lapsed players back into the game. In particular, the report identifies the ‘immense’ opportunity for

further growth if more women can be attracted into the game.

The country currently lags behind the other main European golfing nations with its proportion of women players: in England around 14 per cent of golfers are women; in the leading European countries the figure is around 30 per cent.

The report also anticipates greater revenues from tourism and real estate as the economy recovers.

The England Golf Partnership brings together the amateur governing body, England Golf, and the Professionals Golfers’ Association to grow the game with the support of the Golf Foundation and Sport England National Lottery funding.

When it comes to Captain’s Day, there’s always a few who dare to wear the brightest and loudest clothes on the market. Neon tops which could probably be seen from space and teams wearing multi-coloured, clown-like trousers that you daren’t look too closely at in fear of going boss-eyed or making yourself dizzy. Mind you, as a friend once commented, you have to be a darned good golfer to wear that kind of bright stuff, either that, or you’re colour blind.

The day starts for many with a hearty breakfast, followed by a team picture and boundless of enthusiasm on the first tee.

Horrifyingly, my second shot rolled into the deep bunker but despite a dreadful lie and a noisy audience I managed to shoot out of the sand first time, chip onto the green and then sink the putt, avoiding what could easily have been a three putter on the lethal green.

With the odd bulging golf bag stuffed with something ‘strong’ to keep the swing going, it’s fascinating to watch the scores decline in direct relation to the amount of cans consumed.

You can guarantee at some point, someone will drive their ball (usually the one given to them by the captain) deep into the wilderness so you’ll end up wading through deep grass, praying you don’t fall down a concealed sink-hole, trip over a low-lying stump or worse still, stumble upon a nest of vipers.

A further deterioration of scores usually occurs when the smell of the BBQ wafts over the course and members quicken

What you don’t appreciate is the refreshment area offers a great view of the green and you’re about to provide the entertainment for the day. In my case, the flag had been wickedly set up only yards from a pot bunker and on an impossible hump, making it great entertainment for those tucking into their burgers and beer.

Clearly the thought of humiliation, a burger and a drink is the incentive I need to play well!!

Surprise, surprise, the scores weren’t high; particularly the back nine!

long the theme of business and golf, putting can be referred to closing the deal OR sometimes frustratingly the ones that got away!

When you reflect on your last few rounds your putting technique may be at fault, I have listed a few tips at the end of this article, but before you get there I hope you might find some reasons why some days our putting stats may not be all they seem.

Your putting results sometimes can be traced all the way back to the tee! On the tour the players are given pin sheets that informs them where exactly the hole is on the green ie 20 yards on from front of green and 12 yards from the right edge. The player already has the information on how deep the green is from front to back and the width.

On the tee the player will have noted the flag may be tucked behind the bunker on the right side of the green, so off the tee their aim would be to place their drive down the left side of the fairway leaving them a better line of approach for his second shot to the pin. The player is thinking ahead, preparation for the 2nd shot that leads to the 3rd shot.

As with your business it is the preparation before getting there!

My first great lesson on this was playing with Lee Trevino in the first two rounds in an event on the Australian circuit when he was at the height of his fame ( he won 6 majors).

I remember the greens were grease lightening and undulating, exaggerating the speed! On the first day I seem to remember I thought I played OK but putted very poorly thanks to hitting my approach shots to the wrong positions on the green.

Lee’s first round score I think was 69 which was one heck of a score on that course with the greens being so incredibly fast, me I was 75 yet I thought I had outplayed him from tee to green.

I had hit a far greater number of greens in regulation, which meant nothing when I was leaving myself very difficult 20 footers across the slopes worse still downhill and across.

He deliberately left his approach shots in positions that his next shot was uphill whether it was a putt or a chip.

If you are already thinking ahead then perhaps it may be the technique, a visit to your club pro is advisable!

We have lessons to hit the ball straight and long but we have a putting lesson on very few occasions, funny really because whenever we 3 putt you could say 1 or 2 shots have been lost! On the technical side a few tips for you: • Check the ball is under your eyes at address.

• Hands are hanging relaxed

You see just hitting the green was not good enough it had to be in the right place, that was under the hole always having a uphill putt. Easier said than done I agree but that was the aim!

Your putting statistics may not read too good but has it been down to bad positioning coming from bad preparation or just bad putting! As with chess you need to think one or even two moves ahead!

• Unlike chipping when the eyes can follow the ball, in putting the head remains perfectly still. Your eyes should burn into the green where the ball has been.

• One or maybe both elbows close to the body at address acting as reference points Going back to Lee Trevino, he was once quoted as saying, “There is no such thing as a natural touch. Touch is something you create by hitting millions of golf balls!”

I have a question for you, have we practiced our putting enough? I’m guilty!

After all it is all about feel and imagination and preparation!

Ryder Cup Star To Attend BGN Launch Event in Dorset, At Spiritual Birthplace Of Ryder Cup! As many regular Tee Times readers will already know, the Business Golf Network, also known as BGN, is an organisation that brings business people together, to build new business relationships, and generate new business opportunities for each other, using golf as the vehicle!

In fact BGN members are already benefitting from the new business relationships, and friendships they have formed, with the new business that is being generated between the members and their contacts!

We are a serious and structured Business Network organisation that has golf at the heart of everything we do. Each BGN group meets twice monthly at various golf clubs ( currently along the South Coast...but watch this space). The format is always the same, namely a formal business network meeting, followed by a golf activity, which is a choice of a group golf lesson with a PGA professional, or weather and light permitting, 9 holes of golf! For his holidays, the founder Samuel Ryder, liked to go to Weymouth (a few miles from

Came Down GC). He would usually stay for a fortnight each year at the Royal Hotel. Whilst on holiday he would play golf at Came Down, and eventually became a member. Whilst at the club he was greatly impressed with two wonderful young professional golfers of their time the 'Whitcombe' brothers, who explained they could not afford to compete at the highest level due to lack of funds, in comparison to the Americans Pro's who were even then receiving corporate sponsorship.

As a direct result of this conversation, and Samuel Ryder's desire to help give young British Pros the opportunity to compete, the idea of the Ryder Cup, a match between Britain and the USA was born!"

Welcome to my first article in a series of Short Game Master Classes. In recent months I have been fortunate enough to spend time with some of the best teachers and players in the game, which has inspired me to share the knowledge I have gained in this time. I hope these instruction articles will clear up some common misconceptions connected to technique and also help you realise your potential when putting my advice into practice. This month we focus on how to effectively use the bounce on your wedges and learn how, for many years, this has been misused and misunderstood.

When the Scots designed golf clubs, they did something very clever to the bottom of our wedges - they gave the sole an angle designed to stop the club digging into the ground when chipping, pitching and in bunkers. This is called the bounce angle.

When the sole of the wedge comes into contact with the ground, the bounce angle encourages the club to slide, preventing the leading edge of the club from digging in and, in turn, saving us from a chunk or chop at impact.

For many years a certain prejudice has been adopted by golfers and, dare I say it, some golf instructors when it comes to chipping and pitching. Many believed, and still do, that we should play the ball in the back of our stance, with our hands pressed forward and our weight favouring the lead leg. (See pic 2). Let me explain what this prejudice actually sets us up for.

loft and bounce! We have presented the leading edge of the blade to the ground which, if it makes contact with the ground, will likely dig in causing chunked and chopped impacts.

In short game, one of the most important skills to learn is where the bottom of the swing occurs. When we swing the club, it moves up and down in an arch like motion, so with this in mind it will always have a low point. Remember this – The lowest point of the swing will always occur directly underneath the butt of the grip.

So where do we want the low point to be when chipping or pitching? Well the answer is, of course, directly under the ball.

So we put the ball back in our stance and press our hands forward – bearing in mind

the low point will always occur directly under the butt of the grip. Where is the low point now? You’ve guessed it – its somewhere ahead of the ball. (See pic 3).

This position will encourage us to hit downwards at the ball, at a sharp angle, where two things are likely to happen. We will either a) dig the club into the ground and chop or b) pull the handle back and up to avoid chopping and now we are fatting and thinning!

I see this mistake all the time and have never had a student not improve immediately as soon as he/she understands exactly how to use the bounce. So here’s what I recommend: Set the ball up in the middle of your stance with equal weight distribution. Start with the club shaft perpendicular to the ground, not leaning forward. (See pic 4). Make a backswing with very little wrist hinge and a follow through with a similar motion. This will help keep the club low to the ground and return the club head to the ball at its lowest point, somewhere near where it started. In fact if you hit the ground before the ball this way, the club will slide under the ball and you can hit a respectable chip/pitch by hitting a couple of inches behind the ball – this would be using the bounce correctly!

See the difference here at the moment of truth. The sequence on the left shows the hands directly above the ball at address, with them returning to a similar position at impact, allowing the head to slide under the ball. The sequence on the right sees the hands pressed forward, with the ball in the back of the stance, encouraging the head to dig, causing chop, chunk or topped shots.

The misconceptions of Shafts I am regularly asked about the quality of the components I use. I have discussed the quality of the heads before and will undoubtedly discuss them again in the future. For this article I want to concentrate on shafts. Primarily I am going to discuss the two most commonly held misconceptions. The first is the more you pay for the shaft the better the shaft. The second and probable even bigger assumption is the shaft in the OEM driver is the same shaft as used on the tour.

Sadly, there seems to be a growing tendency in golf for the price of “better” shafts are getting more and more expensive in real terms. Only a few years ago the thought of a £200 shaft would have been unthinkable. Now, we are living in a material world where £400 can easily be spent. What’s even worse are the majority of golfers who see these £300 - £400 shafts and think money, money, money and automatically form the opinion that if it costs that much, it has to be a really good shaft.

You want to know what the definition of a “good shaft” is? A good shaft is any shaft that has been very accurately matched for its weight, overall stiffness, bend profile, weight distribution and torque to a golfer’s clubhead speed, transition force, downswing tempo, wrist-release, strength and sense of feel.

That’s the definition of a “good shaft” and it has absolutely nothing to do with brand, model or price.

There are 5 different specifications that determine the performance differences between shafts. 1) mass (weight); 2) overall stiffness (flex); 3) bend profile (distribution of the stiffness over the length of the shaft); 4) weight distribution (balance point); 5) torsional stiffness (torque). Two of these, the weight and the torque, are definitely related to the cost of the shaft. The lighter the weight and the lower the torque of a shaft, the more expensive the shaft will be to make. In other words, if you want to make a very stiff 45 gram shaft with less than 3° of torque, that shaft is going to cost a lot more money to make than a 65 gram softer flex shaft with 5° of torque. . . but not £400 by any means.

The other three shaft design elements, a shaft’s overall stiffness, bend profile and balance point, are not even close to being as price sensitive as the weight and torque.

Standard modulus (low cost) graphite raw materials can be used to make any flex, bend profile or balance point from soft L to very stiff X.

Yes, many of the high priced shafts are actually made with more expensive raw composite materials. But they don’t need to be made with such expensive materials to achieve their weight, flex, bend profile, balance point and torque. In a nutshell, it is completely possible to find shafts which cost hundreds of pounds for which all of the performance elements are identical or so close to be considered identical in performance to shafts which cost less than £75. It is difficult to find any performance justification for the very high price charged for some shafts today.

What makes a GOOD shaft is whether that shaft’s flex, bend profile, weight, torque and balance point are well matched to the golfer’s swing speed, point of wrist cock release and downswing force. There really is no such thing as a “bad shaft”; there are only poorly fit shafts and properly fit shafts. A properly fit shaft has no price guidelines or cost requirements attached to it.

a certain price point or make them a little more user-friendly for handicap golfers. If you thought about it if we did have a shaft as used by a professional, we wouldn't be able to use it.

Another clue that we are not getting the tour quality shaft is the difference in the retail price between their stock shafts against after-market shafts. Many OEM drivers will retail in the region of £299 with their house brand shaft.

They will probably offer shaft options and for a small extra cost of less than £50 have instead a “premium” golf shaft, the same shaft as fitted by a club maker for £400. When you consider that as mentioned a couple of years ago by an (ex!) director of Callaway, the cost of their stock shaft costs less than $2!! So as you may have worked out if you take the stock shaft, you are paying almost £300 for a club with a $2 shaft, or you can pay an extra £50 for an imitation premium shaft.

If you do want the real premium shaft, help is at hand to make you happy. The only way to get it is too visit a club maker who can fit this shaft at a premium cost. Or on the other hand you could visit a club maker for some independent advice and get a “good” shaft.

This, as you are now aware may only cost you £75. Caveat emptor…

The OEM Shaft With the greater awareness of golf and fitting, the OEM companies are now offering custom fitting ( which has been de-bunked on several occasions in previous articles) and the option for more “exotic” shafts. The thing to be mindful of is that the shaft manufacturers have spent months (if not years) developing a new shaft using exciting new materials and/or technology. That golf shaft was eventually sent out on tour to validate its performance. As soon as a pro wins a tournament with this shaft and it begins to appear in the bags of other pros, the demand for this “wonder” shaft spreads.

Within a short time this shaft will be available from club makers at the prices as discussed above. So this is where I come with the option of fitting this £400 shaft.

A short time passes and all of the sudden you start to see the major manufacturers begin offering their newest golf club with this new exotic new golf shaft, rumour has it it is the same shaft - or is it? Maybe the silkscreen on the OEM golf shaft has marked 60 instead of a 55, meaning it has a slightly lighter weight. Or maybe the colour is different, but the markings aren’t exactly like the one that can be seen on the shaft manufacturers web site. The question that need to be asked is “Is it the same shaft?”

Sadly, the answer is no.

How the club manufacturers get away with it is the shafts are in fact “Made For” or “Retail” Shafts. These are variations of the new exotic shafts. These may be slightly watered down versions of the Tour Quality shaft, in order to hit

FIRST AND FIFTY mpfield Golf Club is proud to be celebrating fifty glorious years since the club was opened in August 1964. That may not sound ultra special, when considering the number of Centenary clubs in existence today, but Ampfield is unique, for it was the very first short course in the country - so its 50th Anniversary is of particular significance. Not only was it the first but, more importantly, it was designed by one of the true legends of golf, particularly in Great Britain, none other than Sir Henry Cotton.

Sir Henry Cotton received his knighthood at the end of his long and glittering career and was not only a brilliant golfer, but also a superb cricketer; the public schoolboy who was the complete sportsman.

His natural talent flowed, and after his brilliant playing career, he turned to writing, (he was the author of ten successful golf books), and also to golf course design.

He came to playing prominence in the 1930’s, when he brought to an end ten years of American domination of the Open Championship, by winning at Sandwich in Kent, where he lead from start to finish.

He was Champion golfer again in 1937 at Carnoustie when, more importantly, all the great Americans, (including the other three Major winners), were in the field.

Sadly the world was deprived of his best years because of the intervention of World War II, during which he served in the RAF, but even after such a lengthy period away from competition he returned to win The Open Championship again in 1948 at Muirfield - the last of his major successes.

It is the only time a reigning monarch, King George VI, has attended the Open. It is also worth noting that in the nineteen times he played in The Open, he was only out of the top ten on two occasions and never out of the top twenty. A fantastic record.

www.ampfieldgolf.com He later went to live in Portugal, where he had his house adjacent to the golf course he designed at Penina, which became a mecca for golfers from all over the world.

In such a career context, perhaps Ampfield might not be considered of high import, but that is far from the case. For on his last visit to Romsey in 1986, he was asked about his project at Ampfield.

He responded with great enthusiasm and pride about the course which he said had been his ambition to build.

He had long wanted to create a short course which would test golfers of any calibre and he made a marvellous success of the project near Romsey, on which he worked with John R Stutt of Bournemouth as the constructor. A success which has stood the test of time. He was christened “The Maestro” by Henry Longhurst and no-one would disagree, certainly none of the members at Ampfield who have enjoyed the course he designed fifty years ago.

ceremony, hit the first ball, then played a challenge match on his new creation; events portrayed in the gallery of black and white photographs around the clubhouse walls.

Ampfield was to be in very good company, for Henry Cotton designed great courses throughout the United Kingdom and also in Italy, Portugal, Morocco and at Waterlooville, the only other course he was involved with in Hampshire.

He was certainly fascinated by short course design because he also designed the Three Hammers Complex in Staffordshire, a similar style course.

Perhaps he had the vision to see and understand that there would be other constraints which would make short course layouts attractive, especially the shortage of time.

Mr Alan J Baker and Mrs Stella Bell formed the original Company, with the express purpose of building the golf course. The initial planning application was turned down because of access, but approved on

appeal. Cotton was engaged for the task and I can do no better than to quote his comments on completion of the project in 1964. The words carry both his endorsement and also his satisfaction with the creation.

“I do not know, in the whole of Europe a par three course of similar type. When Mr Baker asked me to study the question, I immediately saw in mind a top class par three, so that the golfer would have the chance to play all the shots. Now it is a dream come true.”

“From the pretty meadow that was Home Farm has been created a complete golf course, with undulating greens, well designed sandtraps and strategically placed trees as additional hazards.”

“Thus history has been made and I look back on the hard work with great satisfaction. It is the sort of course I myself can enjoy playing, when I feel this is so, I know I have succeeded.”

A COURSE FOR CELEBRATION he early 1960’s were a time of prosperity in Great Britain. The economy was sound, people could get employment fairly easily, wages and salaries were on the rise and people were enjoying more leisure. Golf, which had been seen as a sport for the wealthy or elite of society, was suddenly within the grasp of the middle income community. The obvious consequence was the shortage of courses to play and an increasing difficulty to obtain membership at the established golf clubs.

Into this situation came the arrival of an eighteen hole short course of quality, the facility at Ampfield. It was of tremendous benefit to the community and was the first such course in the Country. It soon attracted a good membership which has proved to be both loyal and long enduring.

The pattern had been created, oft later copied and one that would stand the test of time. The foresight of Mr Baker was fully justified and aptly rewarded and, more importantly, the golfing fraternity in the district had a new challenge. The first eighteen hole course built in the County since the war. The clubhouse, which was a large converted bungalow, served the purpose ideally.

The early years saw Ampfield Golf & Country Club much in the news, for Henry Cotton was a feature writer for both Golf Illustrated and also the now defunct News of the World newspaper. He gave great credence to the club and defended strongly any attempt to describe it as a pitch and putt. In fact Alan Baker also published a challenge to pay £100 to any golfer who could play the course to Standard Scratch with just a wedge and a putter. Several tried but none ever succeeded. The Sixties was a time when Professional golf was far from the scene of today but the great names in the sport came to Ampfield to display their talents. Benson and Hedges was the sponsor of the first prominent Pro Am event held at the club, The Sterling Invitational.

Ryder Cup stars Peter Alliss and Charlie Ward were the big names and there were several Tour players, such as John Stirling and David Miller of Stoneham in the field.

against the Club Professional Joe Reynolds, who always acquitted himself well on his home patch.

Stella, who was a very enthusiastic golfer, was also interested in the tree planting programme and was responsible for many of the beautiful specimen trees that have matured on the course. In fact the tree expert from Hilliers Arboretum has visited and admired the wonderful range of trees on the course.

The course at Ampfield is located on the A31 between Romsey and Winchester. It is 2314 yards long, with a par of 54 and a Standard Scratch of 55. When asked about the signature hole, Cotton felt that although all the holes are good, the 14th would qualify, but more recent responses have been that the 2nd and the 5th are the toughest test. One thing is certain, this is one of the most sporting and attractive courses in the County, maintained in the very best condition, and with greens that are a pleasure to putt on. The front nine is the longer of the two nines, with a challenging opening three holes, but each hole needs to be accurately clubbed, making it an excellent short game sharpener. The last nine offers some chance to recoup the shots you may well have squandered on the front nine, with three holes of less than 100 yards which, at first glance, seem ideal for the purpose but nothing should be taken for granted, unless the putter is in good form.

The club was eventually sold by Stella and her family in the late 1990’s and was in private ownership for about seven years before it was purchased by the current

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS owners, The Hazell family, who had all been taught to play golf on the course. When the opportunity to buy came in 2006, they accepted the challenge and became the new owners in April of that year. With Mark Hazell settled into the role of Managing Director, the task commenced.

With firsthand knowledge of the history of the club, the facets that need to be tackled were soon identified, to put the course and the golf club on the map. A schedule of work was agreed with the involvement of Head Greenkeeper Paul Websdane, (who has been at Ampfield for over thirty years) and the additional advice of a consultant agronomist, outlining the improvements desirable for a top quality course. A challenge that has been embraced and absorbed into the management philosophy, and the success is already visible for all to see. Excellent putting surfaces, well constructed bunkers to USGA standards, raised canopies for the trees and good definition to the fairway walkways. Add to that excellent directional signposts and good tee furniture and you have a course where TLC is evident in abundance and well provided. Ampfield is a unique course in the County and in the whole of the South of England. It is being enthusiastically restored to its position as a premier location for members and visitors alike.

The history of a golf course is contained in the people and the fabric of the buildings and the course. Ampfield is rich in both. Many of the members are of very long standing and they have much to enjoy in the present era. Some members of staff have arrived in recent months, recruited by Mark Hazell, to bring new skills and contribute to the teamwork required to keep such an operation ticking over at its best. Club Secretary Nikki Fowler and Club Professional Michael Lord have settled in well to complement old hands at the club.

Everyone who plays the course has something to say about it, simply because it

is different. No driver in the bag, eighteen holes played in less than two hours, but a test of skill nevertheless. Exactly as envisaged by Henry Cotton fifty years ago.

As we sat on the terrace after our round in glorious sunshine, enjoying a glass of the amber nectar, we chatted to the people who had played ahead of us. They had thoroughly enjoyed the game, having only noticed the course as they passed on the way to their hotel. Their parting comment was simply this “if we lived nearer, we would have to join” That is just one independent view, and very typical.

It is no surprise that the Hampshire PGA Short Course Championship is held annually at the club, much enjoyed by the elite golfers of the County. This event is typically held on the last Friday in August.

Just a week prior to this event, the club are also very pleased to host, for the first time, the English Women’s Par 3 Championship. It will be fascinating to see how the best ladies cope with the challenges, and then compare scores with how the Pros fare!

The club has 230 active members, with memberships currently being available at the club in all categories, both full and seven day. It costs as little as £422 per year for Full membership, and £368 for Five Day; both can be paid monthly. At the present time there is an offer to sample the delights of the club. One Month’s Trial Membership is available for just £45 for unlimited golf during the period. A glance at the diary shows how popular the social events are, and how active the club can be.

With a first class Head Chef at the helm, Paul Godfrey, Restaurant 54 is in great demand. The excellent catering facilities are available for lunches, golf society functions, special occasions, weddings, parties and so much more. Members and visitors are most welcome. It is open throughout the week, except when there are private functions.

Kristin Anderson is the Sales, Events and Front of House Manager and plays a key role in delivering an efficient and excellent service. The setting is perfect, with picture windows looking out over the course.

The Pro Shop, run by Michael Lord, is fully stocked with all the latest clothing and equipment, ensuring that there is everything the player needs before setting out on the course.

The club website has the following message “We offer an informal and relaxed environment in which to play golf, relax with friends, family and fellow golfers and enjoy all this wonderful club has to offer”.

Societies can be accommodated any day of the week, and the venue is proving to be high on the list with many new groups coming to get a taste of the course. The majority leave with promises to return, the best assessment of the experience.

The golf course has seen a total overhaul, with standards matching the upgrading of a clubhouse complex which has the look and feel of a quality modern hotel.

The philosophy of friendliness is at the heart of its operations. Sophie Cook, Blacknest’s Marketing Co-ordinator, says: ‘There have been many changes and improvements not only on the course but also in the clubhouse including the bar and restaurant, the gym, the terrace and the addition of ‘The Nest’ cafe. We have a modern function space for weddings, parties, charity events and business conferences which overlooks the views of the golf course. Our 13 bay driving range was recently refurbished with

new balls and mats and late 2014 will see the opening of our new pro shop and extended changing rooms.

‘We have many loyal members who have supported us throughout the transformation of the club but we also welcome new members and visitors. Junior golfers are also very welcome whether it be for our school holiday coaching sessions with our PGA Professional or to join our thriving junior section. We have special regular days for the ladies, seniors and men, and a wide range of membership options available to suit everyone.’

and now flying high his experienced eye and touch, the course has matured and altered to the point where it proudly meets today’s USGA specifications.

It has become an easy-walking par 69 parkland course of 5,974 yards off the medal tees (5,445 yards off the ‘tees of the day’).

The fairways are wide and inviting, many holes are sculptured into the leafy landscape, and there is plenty of variety with some pretty water features.

‘We have,’ says Mark, ‘the widest fairways in the area, long grass out of range, with trees which have matured beautifully over the years. Natural flowers add to the character to the course, which attracts wildlife such as red kite and deer.

‘A current three-year programme of allround course improvement continues, with revamped bunkers, continually improved drainage and extensive renovation of the greens. A revamp of the par 3 course is also in the pipeline.’

Jeremy Turrill, Blacknest Operations Manager, said: ‘We are pay & play and are open to all to encourage more people to give golf a go.

However we also have our gym and social membership for those non golfers’.

There are 10 membership categories covering permutations such as practice/beginner membership, basic/social, and combined golf and gym. Five- and sevenday memberships offer a whole basketful of benefits. Societies are very welcome and Blacknest will help arrange a bespoke day.

True, Blacknest does not have the venerable history of some clubs. But here is a club of relatively recent vintage which has catapulted itself into the upper ranks.

FORMER Bournemouth Alliance captain Michael Watson – familiarly known as “Tom” after this year’s USA Ryder Cup captain – is celebrating a remarkable double hat-trick.

The Wessex Golf Centre professional from Weymouth is again showing some of the on-course form of his illustrious namesake after winning the Rotary Club of St Austell pro-am title at Carlyon Bay for his third consecutive success in five days. This followed victory in the Dudsbury Masters order of merit tournament and then in the Lilley Brook pro-am two days later.

It also completed his hat-trick of wins over the cliff-top course overlooking the rugged Cornish coastline in the annual event that has raised thousands of pounds for local charities.

Last year he shared top place with Richard O’Hanlon (St Kew) and was joint winner with Barry Austin (Downes Crediton) in 2012.

A CHARITY BONANZA Team Tindall (plus Zara) in cash-raiser RUGBY World Cup winner Mike Tindall led Team England to victory and champagne celebrations following a thrilling finish to the Celebrity Cup at Celtic Manor.

Captain Tindall was cheered on by his wife, Zara Phillips, as England avenged their defeat in last year’s final to the same opponents, Scotland. The other members of the winning team were actor and entertainer Bradley Walsh, Dragons’ Den entrepreneur Peter Jones, cricketer Graeme Swann, former world champion swimmer Mark Foster and The Good Wife star Matthew Goode.

He clearly loves the Cheltenham air as he won his only previous pro-am this year at nearby Cotswold Hills a month earlier.

This is the moment each year when fellow West players can only admire his talents as he reels in the prize money. He said: ‘I don’t know why, but I always seem to do well from July onwards. This is certainly my time of year and it all started for me at Carlyon Bay exactly a year ago.’

He went on to win 13 times during the remainder of the season and become the region’s highest earner. Yet once again he started the season quietly. Lee Thompson (Dudsbury), the player coached by Minchinhampton left-hander Stuart Little who finished second, shared third with two in-form Welsh-based players Liam Bond (St Pierre) and Richard Dinsdale (Parc Golf Academy) who was runner-up to Watson at Dudsbury.

Carya Golf club is without question one of the best golf courses in the Belek area, it has always been one of the most requested golf courses with a reputation founded on quality in every department.

Designed by the company founded by 5 times open champion Peter Thomson, on what he described as the most exceptional piece of land in the Belek area, Carya Golf was inaugurated in November 2008 just two years after the first visit by the designers.

Carya Golf Club has been designed to be enjoyed by all golfers. The free flowing holes run between pine and eucalyptus trees and across a dramatic sand ridge which creates a great variety of shot options. From the Championship tees, the 7,186 yard (6,570 metres), par 72 course, is a demanding test of golfing strategy – while tourists playing from the regular yellow tees (6,366 yards / 5,821 metres) will appreciate the generous fairways and enjoyable approaches.

Carya is reminiscent of the heathland style courses to be found in the south of England, over 1 million sprigs of heather have been planted to create this impression, ok the trees are a lot different being Eucalyptus and Pines but the feel is quite similar.

Among the outstanding holes is the par-3 7th, an iconic short hole (174 yards from the back tees) over a stream and hollow, with diagonal, heather-topped bunkers guarding the green entrance.

Golf Academy

The hole is called ‘Sirens’ named after the mythological creatures whose singing lured unwary sailors onto rocks and like those mythical beauties this hole is very pretty and must be played with caution.

Carya Golf Club also boasts a luxurious clubhouse to welcome international visitors, plus a state-of-the-art golf academy and driving range. I have seen promotional material that calls Carya Golf “a sophisticated golf club” unusual description I first thought, but having had the pleasure of playing the course several times that description fits it to a tee, sophisticated golf sums it all up in just two words.

Carya Golf is always available to play during your stay in Belek, you will usually find it is an add on golf course due to the fact it is not tied into any particular hotel.

But this about to change with the opening of the new Regnum 5* hotel (opened spring 2014).

The island of Gran Canaria is blessed with year round sunshine and some of the best courses in the Michael Rees Canary Islands. In addition to the two courses featured at the Sheraton Salobre Resort there are five other courses, including Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas designed by Mackenzie Ross, the oldest golf club in Spain, dating back to 1891. The map shows the location of the courses, two in the North and five more just a half an hour distant in the South of the island.

Two of which we had the pleasure of playing, Anfi Tauro and Las Meloneras.

the mind’s eye for many a long day, it is a real delight. Spectacular scenery, with splashes of bright colour from the flowering bushes, a course which is in perfect condition and a true sporting challenge, where even small successes are to be savoured. Once played – never forgotten.

Near to the resort of Maspalomas there are two other courses, Maspalomas Golf is part of the major tourist complex, it is reasonable flat with wide fairways, set in the area of natural dunes, a protected area of more than 400 acres. Along the Meloneras Bay is the scenically beautiful course of Las Meloneras.

After a comfortable opening hole, it rolls into a vista of mountain views, followed by a back nine of amazing ocean views along the coastline. A nine hole stretch which will be remembered for the holes played over the ravine inlets which cross the course on their way to the sea. Carries which can be very daunting particularly on the run of holes from the 14th to the 16th. The last of the quartet of courses that made up our golfing treat.

Just a short drive South from Salobre is Anfi Tauro where world renowned architects Robert von Hagge, Smelek and Baril have created another awe inspiring golf course.

With experience of designing over four hundred courses on five continents, they have accepted, challenged and conquered the most inhospitable landscape and from it created a beautiful golf course which opened in 2007.

I have deliberately kept the content of this page brief to give more space for the photographs, which I hope will convey both the beauty and the challenges of golf on Gran Canaria.

Spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean are visible from all over the course, the 8th hole is memorable, set in an alcove of red rock.

The views on the back nine, where the climb up the valley makes even the shorter par fours seem long, and the entire Tauro Valley is stretched out in view from the 14th to the 17th holes. This is a course that will stay in

AN EAGLE LANDS THE ASTOR SALVER FOR SOPHIE ENGLAND girl international Sophie Keech, from Parkstone, Poole, won the Astor Salver at The Berkshire with a fourunder total for the 36 holes.

She follows in the footsteps of a fellow Dorset player – the England international Hayley Davis, who won the trophy two years ago.

‘I thought it would be really cool if I could win too, so I was really pleased,’ said Sophie, the English girls’ champion.

At The Berkshire, Sophie opened her account with a three-under 69 on the Blue course, which included 13 straight pars followed by four birdies and a solitary bogey on the 16th. She signed off with a one-under 72 on the Red course, which included an eagle three on the 15th, which took her score under par. Sophie was two shots clear of Dulcie Sverdloff (Garon Park, Essex), who also opened with a 69. In the afternoon, Dulcie birdied the last two holes of the round for a 74 to finish a stroke ahead of former England champion, Kerry Smith (Waterlooville, Hampshire).

Return of glamour girls Michelle’s maiden Major brings back the charisma factor FOR an age now, it has seemed that global women’s golf was destined to be dominated by a tidal wave of players from the Far East.

Quality golfers, yes. Marketable stars around the world, probably not.

High on ability but practically invisible on the charisma scale, the Asian stars appeared to be set to sweep all before them for a long time to come. But all that changed at the U.S. Women’s Open at Pinehurst as a trio led by America’s Michelle Wie flicked their pony tails, wrapped their painted nails around their golf clubs and rekindled the pizazz and glamour.

Wie, 24, was joint overnight leader with world number one Stacy Lewis and ended the final day as the two-shot winner of her first Major title.

Lewis’ 66 gave her second place while Northern Ireland’s Stephanie Meadow, amazingly in her first professional tournament, hit a 69 to finish third on one-over.

Wie by playing men’s tournaments as a teenager a stunt for which her handlers were heavily criticised for the negative impact it made on her confidence. She failed to make the cut in her first seven tournaments but came back into form earlier in April with her .

Pat, 61, a pharmacy assistant, has been playing golf for 18 years and her ace at the tricky 132-yard sixth hole at Lytham Green Drive Golf Club, in Lancashire, was her first.

Still reeling from the delighted shock of scoring her maiden hole-in-one, Smart struggled to maintain her composure and, on the par-four 12th hole recorded a nine. But by the time she walked off the 18th green, she had completed the pair on the 13th, of 141 yards over a pond. Eleven-handicapper Pat added: ‘I was very shocked.’ Having beaten all the odds on the course, she and husband Jim, 64, decided they should buy a Lottery ticket - and they won £25.

However, anything which serves to bring enjoyment and interest to the golfing fraternity, and helps the family involvement has to be applauded. So Paint Ball Crazy has arrived at The Academy.

PAINT BALL CRAZY

The topic of conversation at all recent conferences has been the decline in the number of younger people playing golf, and in particular how to address the falling of interest of the younger family man. Shortage of time is the element most cited, so any interest has to yield maximum benefit, and if that benefit can by shared with family time, that is a very positive bonus. Recognising these constraints has led Clive Staddon at the Chandlers Ford Golf Academy to be very aggressive in pursuing any facet that will improve the appeal to the golfer and family man.

The latest project is a very different concept, an idea stimulated by a visit to an adventure centre in South Wales, recently visited by Clive and his family. Paint Ball Crazy has been set up at The Academy to entertain visitors of all ages, during their trips to the centre. Clive has utilised three of the bays at the edge of the range to create a paint ball target area.

He has invested in guns, safety equipment, targets and plenty of ammunition to cater for the numbers expected to take advantage of this very new attraction established onsite.

The area is fully supervised during the weekend when the range is open, and using targets removes all the restrictions normally associated with paint ball activities, and is far easier to supervise, especially from the safety angle when youngsters are involved. The interest shown by golfers of all ages, during the demonstration arranged by Clive was quite amazing, firstly whimsical observation, then positive enthusiasm. From the comments, it will not take long for this new addition to The Academy to be a major family attraction, perhaps giving Dad that extra time on the range, while keeping the rest of the family entertained.

The cost of using the Paint Ball Crazy Range in the three bay shooting gallery is set to attract users, and the safety equipment, use of the guns and fifty paint balls costs just £4 for 50 shots,. It is open at weekends, and by special reservation for Corporate bookings, which offer all the facilities for a total package.

This will be a first class addition to the children’s play area, which was designed to provide facilities for youngsters and also encourage family visits.

The five pieces of equipment on site have cost over £12,000, and offer a first class environment for kids while parents enjoy their golf. For those who use the Academy the play area is free to use.

Clive has the advantage of over 30 years involvement in golf, starting off as a greenkeeper, progressing to a qualification as a golf professional. He went to work for a number of years in Germany, before returning to establish The Academy at Chandlers Ford.

So what about the fundamentals of the academy, firstly there is ample car parking, a putting green and short game area, use of which is free when using the range. There is a thirty bay driving range, only four bays of which are not under cover. There are two private booths, where individual instruction can be given. Housed in those, there is a video facility, and a GC2 launch monitor for detailed analysis of the swing characteristics, and also invaluable for fitting players to the clubs they wish to purchase. RYDER CUP STAR PHILIP PRICE LOOKING TO TAKE THE EUROPEAN FATHER AND SON GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE Phillip Price who famously and crucially beat Phil Mickelson in the 2002 Ryder Cup Singles for Europe to win at the Belfry has entered with his 5 handicap South Wales under 13 champion son Edward into this years SkySports European Father & Son Golf Championship at the Valle Este Golf Resort in Almeria, Andalucia, Spain.

Phil says “to be able to play with my son in this event is unique. We are coming with my wife and daughter as well and we are super excited about competing and trying to win”.

Hayling Ladies WIN the Hayling Trophy

To say that Di Oram (Basingstoke) and Emma Powell (Osborne) are a good foursomes team is an understatement.

This is the third year in a row that they have won it and they won it convincingly.

Their 77 was 4 shots better than mother and daughter team of Debbie and Danielle Burrell from Weybroook Park.

However, when handicaps were deducted then Debbie and Danielle were champions too as their nett 71 put them top of the nett leaderboard so they were not disappointed – but delighted.

Everyone at Waterlooville helped to make this another great day in the HLCGA events calendar so our thanks go to the office, greens staff, professional shop and of course the caterers. We are also very grateful to whoever arranged the weather.

The Seniors’ Championships were held on a sunny day at Hayling GC. What a day to be beside the sea-side and to enjoy the wonderful views at Hayling.

After 11 years, Hayling Ladies have at last won the Hayling Trophy! This Trophy was set up in 2003 by past Lady President Helen Rees to give match-play practice to high handicap players, and it is now contested between 20 Clubs by ladies with handicaps of 25 and above. Until this year, Hayling had never got further than the semi-final.

This year’s semi-finals were held on 9 June, with Hayling playing Waterlooville at Liphook, and Liphook playing Cams Hall at Shanklin & Sandown. The Hayling team of Sandy Meyers, Jeannie Leggett, Erika Everest, Claire Kane and Heather Parham played their

hearts out, and put the onlookers’ hearts in their mouths when they reached 2 matches each, with Jeannie halving on the 18th.

There are no halved matches in the Hayling Trophy, so Jeannie set forth up the 19th knowing all rested on her. That was halved, so off she set up the 20th and disappeared from our view. And she won – and they were in the Final for the first time…..

The same team took on Liphook at Hayling on 26 June for the Final. This was another very close match but Hayling again held their own and won 3-2 and are now the proud holders of the Hayling Trophy for the first time.

Golf Academy

The only weather problem was the wind…… it blew and of course many of us golfing mortals were cut down to size trying to tackle the wind, combined with the traditional links style rough and pot bunkers. The rest of the course was in wonderful condition.

The challenging conditions resulted in CSS moving to its maximum 77 and Reductions Only. However there were some people who tamed the course. Not

surprisingly, the home players featured in the higher end of the leader board, but it was Deirdre Randall from Hartley Wintney (an inland parkland course) who swept the board by shooting 81 to win the Senior Championship by 3 shots from Elaine Barrow (Brokenhurst Manor).

Deirdre’s nett score of 75 was also the best of the day to give her the Seniors’ Nett Championship. This was a closer win as she was just 1 shot better than Esther Sparrow (Blackmoor) and Elaine Hutchings (Stoneham). Deirdre came to the championships as the current holder and so she was returning home with a successful defence AND the nett trophy too. What an achievement.

Our thanks go to Hayling GC who pulled out lots of stops to help us in a difficult day. The course was in great condition, the dinner was very well received, the starter, marshalls and ball spotters were invaluable. Hayling were also able to help us on the table after our competitions secretary fell ill.

THE ASTBURY Shropshire is a beautiful county, witnessed by thousands of visitors each year. Filled with historic towns, ancient monuments and a wonderful collection of golf courses of every type.

In recent years another has been added to this glorious clutch, and generated from a most unusual source, one which I must admit initially gave me a few doubts, that is until we arrived to play it. I had been told about The Astbury, then seen the publicity when 2012 Open Champion Darren Clarke was appointed Ambassador; but I was totally intrigued by the suggestion that a quality course had been designed by an uninitiated enthusiast, who also happened to be the lead guitarist of legendary British heavy metal band Judas Priest. KK (Ken) Downing has had his years in the spotlight, many live tours and recording hits, with records sales of over 40 million, but few knew of his passion for golf, which he exercised whenever the opportunity arose. Experiences gained around the world that truly served him well, when he came to design his own layout just outside the delightful town of Bridgnorth, nestling alongside the river Severn, out on the road to Highley.

Ken Downing purchased 300 acres of the Astbury Hall estate, including the Georgian style stately home originally built in the 13th century, in the reign of Henry 111, it was destroyed by fire and rebuilt in 1891.

Formerly the home of the Mayor of the town, whose portrait still hangs in the house, it provided the perfect setting for the creation of a golf complex. Now the superb clubhouse

A glance up the 10th will reveal an unusual bunker with an island pampas grass plantation in the middle, which seems to have a magnetic attraction for golf balls.

It is an interesting walk through the walled gardens to the elevated starting point, but a chance to take in the rolling countryside which has obviously been utilised to the full in the creation of the course.

As you stand on the first tee, preparing to drive, looking out over the Shropshire countryside, you can see plumes of white smoke and hear the train whistle of engines on the Severn Valley Steam Railway as it chugs along the river valley. The fairways run run up and down like ribbons of carpet, with great definition and with subtly placed bunkers, which reveal themselves as a fine feature of the course, to ensure that your attention is grabbed from the early in the round. The overall impression is one of great attention to details, the condition of the bunkers, the care of the tees and fairways, a total concept of quality and presentation, and most enjoyable to play. Some excellent short pat fours, providing the chance to improve the scorecard, to cover the mishaps, for the challenge will definitely take a few prisoners.

We took the opportunity to chat with golfers of a visiting society of West Midlanders who had come to play, and were savouring liquid refreshment on the terrace; the response was a unanimous endorsement for the course, in full agreement with our own views.

A great day, and a super golf course to enjoy it on, blessed with fine weather, with time to take in some marvellous wildlife. We often use the expression “millionaires golf” and this really fits the description, if like us you enjoy something special, your visit will be a memorable one.

This is the latest book by Ross Biddiscombe, a noted sports writer not only on golf but also on soccer and American football. Once again his detailed research and investigative journalism has led him to produce a fascinating read. Tackling the subject from a very different angle, he has defined his story by chapters, each of which is a good read of itself.

The title of this first class publication is motivated by the playing of links golf, and there could be nothing better. This a large volume, quite unusual in that is has it origins in Australia, and there are obviously many pieces which relate exclusively to the Antipodes, but in addition there are many facets of general interest and fascination for the golf enthusiast.

No book would be complete without the inclusion of the great names, and these are present in abundance, the Big Three, Nicklaus, Player, Palmer, on the world scene, and Graham Marsh, Bruce Crampton, David Graham et al from the home front. With many tales which have been aired on numerous occasions, but also little gems that have been unearthed by the intensive research and dedication of the author Andrew Crockett, who was inspired to write the book by his grandfather, who introduce him to the game, and also by a chance meeting on a flight to Australia. One of the tales revealed in the script.

Whatever the motivation he has produced a very readable volume, which contains an amalgam of pieces, including something about all the greats, especially the great Aussies, not forgetting the great ladies, but with the notable exception of Aussie Greg Norman, who declined to participate. The black and white photographs are simply wonderful, of past times, colour shots of

courses and players that are certainly new to my eyes, and with a simply delightful chapter on artist Robert Wade undoubtedly one of the finest water colour artists in the world, with pages depicting his works, a chapter that is totally absorbing.

My method of reading this type of book, and I have several in my library, is to pluck it off the shelf and open it at some random place and start to read, I found this book absolutely perfect for this mode, chapters that are very different, complete in themselves, and broken into sections for the days when time is short. Alternatively it is easy to look up some particular interest, I found absorbing pieces on Norman Von Nida, trick shot artist and fabulous golfer Joe Kirkwood, Open Champions Kel Nagle, Bob Charles and the greatest of them all Peter Thomson.

When I am asked to write reviews on books particularly golf books, my final assessment is whether I am prepared to add it to my personal library, which after forty years of collecting is pretty full. I have no hesitation in saying this is one for me.

He has exposed some of the myths about the early years, the concept that it was all the idea of one Same Ryder, important though he is, the idea had been muted on numerous occasions and by different clubs and individuals well before 1927.

He explains the lot of the professional golfer in those early years, and how international competition was instrumental in changing those attitudes.

He fully catalogues the import of Robert Hudson, the American businessman who alone enabled the first contest to be held after the War, resurrecting the Ryder Cup when it seemed doomed.

The frustrations of the barren years before the involvement of the rest of Europe are told, a period when there was only one win for GB & I in decades, the lot of the professional once again highlighting the gross differences between their role in the USA and as a club pro in Great Britain. Then for those who were not involved in golf in the period when the future was in doubt, following the refusal of Tom Weiskopf to bother to play, there is a clear story of how things had to change. The impact of the diplomacy of Jack Nicklaus, Lord Derby and the significance of Seve Ballesteros are given a full airing.

The chapter on Power & Politics is enlightening to say the least, exposing

some of the conflicts between individuals concerning selection and making heard some of those who suffered because of personality clashes. Notably one Tommy Horton, a real gentleman who was left in the wilderness for six years when regularly in the top ten players. The disparity between the PGA and the PGA of America, the two bodies controlling the biennial competition is well defined, and the reader for once has full and unequivocal comment on the status that exists.

There is of course a full schedule of all the results of each match, and even space for a whimsical look at the possible future some twenty five years ahead, when both the Europeans and the Americans could be eclipsed by Asian golfers. Food for thought indeed.

A place on my bookshelves, most certainly, not as a historical reference volume, but because it is a very good read. For the third time, Ross Biddiscombe has done intensive research for his book and exposed a new perception of this fantastic event. Linking the three stages of its evolution highlighting the impact of World War II and the three men he has defined as the saviours of the contest and the preservation of its future, whatever that may be.

LEGENDS OF THE GAME... ...BERNARD DARWIN The game of golf is unusual in that the characters that become elevated to the status of legend come from a variety of disciplines. Naturally the majority are players, as in any other sport, but golf also yields from other genre, golf course architects, ball and club makers, administrators and authors and journalists. Many arrive at this by chance, after choosing to switch from their original profession, doctors or lawyers, such as Dr Mackenzie or Harry Colt, and it is true of our subject on this occasion, writer Bernard Darwin. For it was not on the links that he became recognised, for although he was a formidable golfer in his own right, it was his pen and not his golf clubs that brought him recognition the world over.

Recognition as a wonderful wordsmith who also brought fame to the golf club which was his passion throughout his lifetime, his beloved Aberdovey.

Bernard Richard Meirion Darwin was born in September 1876, his parents were Francis Darwin and Amy Ruck, sadly his mother died from fever within four days of his birth. He was the first grandson of renowned naturalist Charles Darwin and he was brought up by them at their home Downe House in Kent. He was educated at Eton and graduated in law from Trinity College Cambridge, where he was a golfing blue from 1895 -97, and team Captain in the final year. He became a lawyer, but did not enjoy the life, he married artist Elinor Monsell in 1906 and they had three children. He served as an Officer in the Ordnance Corps in the First World War. It would have been easy for him to settle into a comfortable lifestyle after being called to the bar, but he elected to move into journalism, for which he had no training. However he was an authority and an expert on Charles Dickens and frequently used quotations from his works

in his articles. His family were steeped in golf, and he was quickly infected with the bug. The family played summer golf at the seaside; his Uncle Arthur Ruck had brought golf from Formby to Aberdovey, where he built the golf course, and where Darwin spent his holidays travelling to Wales on the train. He became a very accomplished golfer and joined Woking Golf Club which had been formed by barristers.

1924, and the Worplesdon Mixed Foursomes with Joyce Wethered in 1933. However his greatest challenge came in 1922, when he travelled to the United States to report on the first Walker Cup match. The British team Captain Robert Harris was taken ill and could not play, so Bernard was drafted into the side. Although the team lost, he won his singles game.

In 1907 he received an offer from the Evening Standard to write a golf column, his first Open Championship report was from Sandwich in 1908 and offers followed from The Times and also Country Life magazine, which gave him his platform. He stayed with them from 1919 until 1953, writing under the heading “By Our Golf Correspondent”. Only once in fifty years did he file late, and then only because of the failure of the wireless on the ship.

It seems he was destined to be present on prominent occasions, for in 1913 he was also in the USA covering the tour by Harry Vardon and Ted Ray, the giants of British golf at the time. When Francis Ouimet earned himself a place in the playoff with Vardon and Ray, Bernard Darwin was the scorer for the young American who staggered the world by winning the US Open Championship, witnessing the scenes at first hand. An event which changed golf in the USA forever.

He was a very good golfer, he won the Golf Illustrated Gold Vase in 1919, he competed in the Amateur Championship 26 times and reached the semi-final twice in 1909 and 1921.He won the Presidents Putter at Rye in

During these years his work for the Times and Country Life earned his a huge readership, and it was a natural progression to begin writing books, which he did with the same skill and success. It was said that his

writings endeared him to his readers, and I quote “his wit and erudition are those of a full man who happens to love sport and not those of a sportswriter pressing to attract attention”. He was warm, honest, enjoyable and unfailingly gracious. There could be no finer commendation. He wrote over thirty books, mostly on golf but also on cricket and other matters.

It is a mark of the man that he was Captain of Rye Golf Club on two occasions, fifty years apart, in 1906 and 1956, as well as being Captain of the R&A in 1934. It came as no surprise when he was elected into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2005 in the Lifetime Achievement category. He certainly met the criteria for that in no uncertain terms.

A fine golfer, and even better writer, whose books are the cornerstone of every golfer’s library. He died in October 1961, but will be remembered forever because of the quality of his literary work.

SW Girl’s Inter Counties Championship at Dudsbury Golf Club Sunday, Tuesday 3rd to 5th August 2014 Dorset Ladies County Golf Association is delighted to be hosting the SW Girl’s Inter Counties Championship at Dudsbury Golf Club between Sunday pm to Tuesday pm of 3rd – 5th August 2014.

Dorset also hosted County Week at Yeovil earlier this year, which was a great success.

SW Girl’s Inter Counties consists of 6 single matches between the following counties: Dorset , Cornwall, Devon, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire.

Each County has a team of 8 girls to choose from and a decision is made half an hour before each match as to who will be playing.

The competition is off handicap and provides some excellent and close matches.

To FIX it try this: Remember to set the ball about a club head inside your front foot, this is ready to then just be collected through impact by the wood. Your posture should be athletic and your arms just hanging down from your shoulders, any tension at this stage in your set-up is a no no.

Relax your hands on the club as many golfers tend to strangle the grip and this in itself results in poor strikes.

Once relaxed you literally need to make a complete golf swing. It is a sweeping action not a hitting action. Almost imagine you are just letting the ball get in the way of a practice swing. You could build this element into your pre-shot routine. Do one practice swing beside the ball and then setup and do another where the ball happens to get in the way. This will require a bit of practice but it will be well worth it!

Focus on getting through to a photo finish and maintain your balance throughout and let the club do what is was designed for. You should find the ball sailing down the fairway in no time.

Just a thought: • Don’t try to use a fairway wood if the ball is sat in a hole or a poor lie. This is a rescue club’s job.

• If you find a fairway wood long and you tend to catch shots heavy, try gripping down it by a few centimetres. This will give you a bit more control with it.

• Only try and hit your 3 wood off the fairway if the ball is perched up well. A 5 wood or even a 7wood will sometimes be a better option if the lie isn’t perfect.

Success with fairway woods are all down to being chilled out and confident. So let that club do some of the work for you and just swing away.

What impact could sleep possibly have on your golf game? For starters, if your mental clarity is reduced you’re going to be less able to focus your attention on things like wind, reading the greens or the many other course conditions that you have to be aware of to play your best golf. Plus when you are tired your body must release more adrenaline to keep you awake. This prevents you from being able to relax, remain calm and stay in control. As your round goes on, you’ll likely become physically fatigued, which will directly impact your balance, stability and coordination.

Sleep deprivation can interfere with memory, energy levels, mental abilities and mood. In a study conducted by the University of Chicago Medical Centre in 1999, researchers found that the condition drastically affects the body’s ability to metabolize glucose, leading to symptoms that mimic earlystage diabetes.

Sleep deprivation also can contribute to heart disease, obesity and cancer. Without sleep you simply cannot function at your best.

Sleep debt undermines your ability eat health-consciously and exercise as well.

When the brain is exhausted it doesn’t know whether it is sleep-deprived or starving for glucose, so the natural response is to crave sugar, which is why you have late-night cravings when you’re tired. When you’re low

on energy, your brain wants to conserve energy, so motivation to do any sort of exercise is reduced.

The early hours of sleep are very important as during the first deep sleep of the night, the greatest amount of growth hormone is secreted to help the body repair the damage that has occurred throughout the day. This is why being shocked within the first hour of falling asleep seems to leave you worn out the next day.

Consistent sleep patterns are the most conducive to restorative sleep and inconsistent sleep patterns are most likely to lead to sleep deprivation. Research has found that around ten thirty is the ideal time to go to sleep, giving you a solid eight hours if you wake at six thirty.

So when you are looking for ways to improve you golf game, don’t just look at the swing.

One of the most important factors in improving concentration, consistency, confidence and focus is getting the right amount of quality sleep. As the saying goes “early to bed and early to rise, makes you healthy, wealthy and better at golf!!”. Pictured is Ben Hogan, he must have slept well!!
