We were all salivating at the prospect of a 15th big one as Woods recreated that old, familiar sight as he chase his first Major in 10 years: the man in red on the final day, rolling back the years and still worshipped by a horde of delighted, hopeful fans. A couple of blips down the stretch saw him slip to joint sixth, but oh what further delights his performance foretold. For a man who, in his own words, is held together with strappings and glue, he still excites. True, as the drama unfolded, Europeans who are bound to feature in the Ryder team began to break up the American pack. Francesco Molinari, forever viewed as the Steady Eddie of the European Tour, became the first Italian in history to claim the Claret Jug – and well deserved for his nerves to steel.’It is absolutely amazing,’ Molinari said. ‘I think it will take a long time to sink in. It has been a great week. ‘The course bit me a few times in the first two days, but to go bogey-free around this track at the weekend is incredible.’ Hampshire own, Justin Rose, magicked his way past the cut and registered a personal best of sublime quality. Rory McIlroy, despite having left his best, second best and third best putters at home, battled to joint second, and swashbuckling Tommy Fleetwood were in the mix. But the fact remains that 13 of the top 20 were American, and at least half of those threatened the title, and Ryder stalwarts such as warhorse Paul Casey, evergreen Lee Westwood and talisman Ian Poulter had all disappeared before the real action had begun. The U.S. will be hot to trot and full of skill and team spirit when they take on Europe next month. European captain Thomas Bjorn will have to be at his canny best to put together a side to take them on.

A shot clock has been ticking on professional golfers for the first time in a European Tour event – and it worked a treat.
Yet another variation on the basic golf theme is being planned in a bid to continue opening up the sport.
Shot clock’s professional debut on European Tour
During the four days of competition at the Shot Clock Masters, only four players were penalised for running over the time allowed to play a given shot. The experiment, part of official efforts to speed up the pace of a round, was staged with the 120-man field in Austria. The first player in every group had 50 seconds to play a stroke, and from there each subsequent player had 40 seconds to play. Players were given a one-shot penalty each time they ran over the allotted time, with the penalties indicated by a red card against their name on the leaderboard. Each player was also allowed two ‘time-outs’ per round, which gave them twice the time to play their shot. The hope was that this format would cut round times by about 45 minutes, and Keith Pelley, chief executive of the European Tour, hailed the inaugural Shot Clock Masters as ‘a fascinating addition to our schedule.
‘Not only will it help us combat slow play and reduce round times, it is also further evidence of our desire to embrace innovation.’ Competitor Bernd Wiesberger said: ‘With this change, there will be much more attention from the international sports media during the tournament. ‘This Shot Clock format is an ideal way to focus on the issue of pace of play. Golf should definitely be faster and therefore this is a step in the right direction.’ The event was won by Finland’s Mikko Korhonen, who won his first European Tour event with a brilliant display of front-running. And the man who made history as the first golfer penalised a stroke for slow play? Home favourite Clemens Prader, closely followed by Scot Grant Forest.
Male, female and senior players will go head-to-head in a new tournament to be held in Jordan next year. The Jordan Mixed Masters, at the Ayla Golf Club, will be co-sanctioned by the European Challenge Tour, Ladies European Tour and Staysure Tour. The field will consist of 123 players including 40 from each Tour and three top amateurs - who will compete against each other in a single, mixed field. The individual strokeplay event will take place from 4-6 April, 2019. Members from the three Tours will tee off from different yardages but will compete in the same competition. The field will be cut to 60 for the final day’s play to compete for the grand prize, while the leading players from the remaining two Tours will also receive an accolade. Mark Lichtenhein, chairman of the Ladies European Tour, said: ‘The popularity of recent collaborative events such as the GolfSixes have demonstrated that there is a huge public appetite to see men and women playing alongside each other. ‘This tournament will be the first of its kind, where men and women will compete individually, for the same trophy.’

Kim Sei-young: Beat old LPGA record by four strokes
South Korea’s Kim Sei-young set a new LPGA Tour record with a remarkable 31-under score over 72 tournament holes. The 25-year-old was four strokes under the old record as she ran
away with the Thornberry Creek Classic. Her seven-under-par 65 in the final round followed Thursday 63, Friday’s 65 and Saturday’s 64. The run broke the previous record of 27 under, set by Sweden’s Annika Sorenstam in 2011 and matched by Kim herself in 2016. Kim’s nearest challenger in Wisconsin was Spain’s Carlota Ciganda (22 under). Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist, American Emma Talley and Korean Amy Yang were tied for third on 20 under. ‘This is a dream come true,’ said
Kim, the world number 26, whose only blemish was a double bogey on the par three 17th hole on Friday. There were 31 birdies in Kim’s round, also a LPGA record for 72 holes. England’s Bronte Law achieved a best ever finish of sixth as she carded a final round 67 to finish on 18 under. Compatriot Georgia Hall was a shot back on 17 under alongside Jodi Ewart Shadoff, while Charley Hull was on 13 under.

Clubs in the boot
This is a truly charming unsophisticated golf club, very friendly and with a course in excellent condition, with very good greens and views that will be difficult to better anywhere in the country. It deserves and gets an unreserved recommendation to go and play there, whenever you can. The kind of club that I really enjoy.
PANORAMIC ABERYSTWYTH Golfing literature is littered with phrases that convey the special nature of golf courses, and the link with nature and the countryside. The words “A Hidden Gem” convey something special that is not so well known to the playing community, indeed it has become a recognised with rankings of such courses in the press and literature. Unfortunately it has become a little overused, but there are some locations which truly deserve such a defining description, and have indeed already earned a place in the lists, and this is one I with which I agree absolutely. Despite the fact that it was designed by six times Open Champion Harry Vardon, Aberystwyth is a little known venue, even, I was told by the residents of the town, as well as golfing visitors, but a situation that needs to be remedied. Particularly so, since the club only survived thanks to the dedication and funding of the hard core of members. Just a few years ago, the club was insolvent and in danger of going out of existence, which would have been a sporting tragedy of extreme proportions. The members tackled the problem by forming a new limited company and subscribing to the shares, then cut all but the absolutely essential expenditure, and doing all the necessary duties with volunteers and in so doing transformed the club into the viable venture that runs today. Hidden for sure, it is not the easiest to find, A Gem it most certainly is, set high on the cliff top overlooking the town, and approached via a narrow single track road that winds up to the crest. The first view of the colonial style clubhouse and the cascading 15th fairway, alongside the first hole is simply majestic. The mowing contours adding to the sweep and definition of the descent to the green set in front of the veranda in classic style. On the scouting mission to book a teetime, we simply walked and took in the views, strolling up to the 16th tee, high up behind the clubhouse, with panoramic views of the coast north

To add to the pleasures of the days spent in Aberystwyth, there was fish and chips on the seafront and a day excursion on the local steam railway. The Vale of Rheidol Steam Railway runs from Aberystwyth Station up the valley of the river, Afon Rheidol, via little stopping halts to collect extra passengers and past lakes and the hydro scheme, all the way up to Devils Bridge. There the waterfalls cascade down the mountain, and it is well worth the climb down the stairs to see them from below. There is just time to visit the local hotel to have afternoon tea before the return journey down the valley to the town. Magnificent views of the mountains and the lakes throughout the trip keep the camera working overtime.

Time to chat to the volunteer Secretary doing her term of duty, and leaving notes for the next person in the rota, each dedicated to the task of keeping this delightful club running and prospering. The sun was shining both literally and metaphorically. The sun was still shining when we returned to play the course, with promises that the views from higher on the course would be even more impressive. A fact that conflicts with the impression of wet Wales, and a bonus for all the five days we would play golf on the trip.
The first hole climbs up from the clubhouse, and the opening holes continue in an upward direction to reach the top of the cliffs, and as promised we had to stand and admire the vista that spread out below. Cliff top parkland style with rolling fairways and changes in elevation, small ponds and manmade bridges, all add to the enjoyable layout, not overly long but requiring good shot placement to score well. The short par fours are especially good, with tiny greens and sloping contours and run off areas, made for short game shot making, and a rare treat these days. All in all a delightful outing, with the finishing hole, a tough par 3, waiting to provide the final test, when a par is the perfect excuse to return to the clubhouse for liquid refreshment to celebrate.
If you need any further attractions to bring you to Mid Wales, then the region around Aberystwyth abounds with interesting things to do. The circular road route from the town, drive rather than take the train, to the Devils Falls encompasses numerous things of interest. Alongside the reservoir is the Butterfly House, with exotic species flying free. At the Bwlch Nant yr Arian Centre you can witness the feeding of hundreds of red kites, seeing these magnificent birds close at hand from the hides is a memorable experience. Bird wathcers and wildlife photographers come from all over the country to witness the scene. If you are looking for some additional golf, there is also a very pleasant course at Capel Bangor, with stunning countryside all around to add to the pleasure. Bilbao’s best kept Secret
Golf and Rioja wine – An Idyllic combination
Keen golfers are always on the look-out for alternative golf experiences and a recent discovery is an interesting golf destination that is more famous for its wine production than golf yet surprisingly boasts several superb golf courses. Late March I flew to Bilbao with golf clubs in tow to and discovered an idyllic combination of ‘golf and Rioja wine’, while staying in the bustling market town of Logrono a couple hours due north of Bilbao. As schedules were tight we bi-passed the industrial city of Bilbao and its famous Guggenheim museum managing just a brief glimpse of its unusual architecture as we headed north through mostly rugged countryside and endless rows of starkly pruned leafless vines, some seemingly clinging to steep hillsides. This was late March and leaves had yet to emerge. After checking into Logrono’s Gran Via hotel our first evening was spent tasting the delights of a tapas style Spanish dinner in the nearby Karbanova restaurant, and naturally washed down with several varieties of red and white Rioja wines. The aptly named Rioja Alta Golf, in the heart of La Rioja Alta wine producing region was where we played our first round of golf, a twenty minute drive
from the hotel. This course is one of the region’s most beautiful and versatile and surrounded by centuries-old oak trees and magnificent lakes. Our group of 16 opted to play Stapleford and considering this was a completely untested course, it was somewhat a relief to end up with a respectable 27 points. Before returning to Logrono, we stopped by the famous Vivanco Winery, one of the many privately owned vineyards in this area. First we visited the vast caves containing rows and rows of wine filled oak barrels before visiting the adjacent vast wine museum full of interesting and historic exhibits including a series of life-like images depicting wine production in the early eighteenth century. Wondering around the old town of Logrono’s cobbled streets imbibing in various tapas bars is highly recommended, and that’s how we spent an enjoyable evening accompanied by wine expert, Jose Ramon Jimenez Berger, known as El Educador en Vinos and our guide for the evening. Each of the six tapas bars we stopped by Jose duly explained the qualities of the different Rioja wines we were offered. Our next game was played at Logrono Golf Club, a well preserved Municipal 18 hole par 72 course with all the trappings of a private club. The course’s layout is both varied and balanced, attracting golfers of all abilities. The one drawback is its mostly flattish 4th hole par 5, a massive 619 metres long with a slight left dogleg, and Spain’s longest hole. Not only is its length a challenge but directly in front of the green are two strategically placed large bunkers making the hole and green even trickier to negotiate. Over the past few years the club has hosted several top international events including the 2006 Spanish Professional Championships when Miguel Angel Jimenez broke the course record with a round of 60! Another vineyard visit followed this time to the family owned Marques de Vergas Winery and where we listened to an interesting talk on wine production

before visiting its large distillery containing several huge steel vats. Each restaurant dined in during our short trip was a gourmet experience and La Quisquillosa in Logrono’s old town was no exception. Popular with locals, the menu consists of several delicious tasting dishes each accompanied by a different Rioja wine. The Sojuela Golf Club was our next golf experience, a mostly flat par 72 course designed by Julian Garcia-Mayora. This is another interesting and challenging course to play that also includes a couple of very demanding and difficult holes that need good strategic skills to negotiate in order to achieve a good score. Nearby is the Bodego Finca de Los Arandinos which we briefly visited, as well as the family run boutique and spa hotel aptly named after the vineyard. Cooking with a difference was the theme of an innovative ‘cooking experience’ dinner at the Cochina de Ramon. Ramon is the restaurant’s chef who prepares and cooks each course before a captivated audience before serving courses to guests – an interesting if not usual twist to gourmet dining. Finally, on our way back to Bilbao airport on out last day, we briefly stopped by the Izki Golf course in the heart of the Pyrennes and designed by golf’s legend, Seve Ballestertos and what many describe as a serious innovation in golf architecture. Sadly time only allowed a brief visit but clearly this is a course to play on my next visit to this region. There’s so much to do and see in Spain’s Basque region for both keen golfers and wine connoisseurs, and if anything, it couldn’t be a more idyllic combination. April Tod

The American five-time Major champion, 48, jogged after his moving ball on the 13th green at Shinnecock Hills to prevent it rolling further downhill and off the green. The United States Golf Association gave Mickelson a two-stroke penalty instead of disqualifying him. ‘It was clearly not my finest moment and I’m sorry,’ he said. In a text sent to reporters, Mickelson added: ‘I know this should’ve come sooner, but it’s taken me a few days to calm down. ‘My anger and frustration got the best of me. I’m embarrassed and disappointed by my actions.’ With his missed bogey putt appearing to head off the green, Mickelson hit it back towards the hole before eventually needing eight strokes to complete the par-four 13th. After his round, he said he quickly decided the two-stroke penalty would be better than allowing the ball to roll off the green. He accepted the penalty for “making a stroke at a moving ball”, rather than the more severe offence of “an action with the intent to influence the movement of a ball in play”, which could have resulted in disqualification. He finished 48th.
Adam Frayne shattered the Carlyon Bay course record with a nine-under-par 63 and now his Devon county colleagues are claiming a world record for the new Yelverton Golf Club professional, writes Peter Godsiff. Frayne, above, made four eagles and his Devon pals have revealed on social media that the PGA Tour record in America is three eagles in a round by Dustin Johnson. Yet it was not Frayne’s career-low round. ‘I shot ten under at Stonebridge in a Europro event many years ago,’ he said. ‘This was most unexpected because this summer I have been getting to four or five under and the making bogeys. I thought the same thing was happening as I got to three under after five but then dropped successive shots.’ He had no need to worry for he played the back nine in eight under. After an eagle at the fourth he followed with three more at the 324-yard par four 12th when he holed an 80-yard pitch. Conventional threes at the reachable 13 th and 15 th par fives and three pars completed his happy day.
‘I made a nice putt on the last but if I had known it was for the record I might have fluffed it,’ he said. ‘Despite the hot weather the course was very receptive as the club had watered the greens generously.’ He took his day’s winnings to £910 as he was third in the team event with home members M Middlewood, D Saget and P Phelps on 127. William Farley (Bovey Castle) led the winning team of C Watkins, R Dormand and C Phelan on 22-under-par 122 two better than Scott Drummond ‘s trio of G Johns, N Olsen and D Powell. Michael Watson (Wessex Golf Centre) made an eagle and five birdies, three on the homeward run, to share second four shots behind Frayne on 67 with Anthony Buchanan (Tavistock) who started with a bogey before making three birdies on each half. Lee Corfield, who is enjoying a promising first season since joining the PGA staff at Burnham & Berrow was fourth on 68 and Paul Hendriksen (Ivybridge) a further shot back in sixth).

Whether you are standing on the first tee in the monthly medal or about to start a round in The Open, they are almost certain to hit you: Those opening shot nerves. But many who share the experience say they are a good sign that you care and should be welcomed. The professionals have been sharing with BBC Scotland their thoughts on those jitters. ‘Everybody gets them,’ said Marc Warren, a three-time European Tour winner. ‘First tee nerves are kind of weird, because it’s your first shot of the day and you just want to get off to a nice start. ‘But nerves are a good thing. If you’re not nervous then you’ve either had a high score, or you’re out far too early. ‘You’ve heard Tiger Woods talk about how he gets them and he welcomes it.’ Embracing the uncomfortable sensation is something the 2014 European Ryder Cup player Stephen Gallacher echoes. He believes they should be controlled, not feared.
‘It’s like no other,’ said the 2013 and 2014 Dubai Desert Classic winner. You are nervous but I think it’s a great sign, it means you’re ready to perform. ‘You’ve got to have a really robust routine. We practice it and we time it. You pick your target and hit it, but it’s all about the routine.’ Scotland’s Richie Ramsay believes that having a process is key to giving yourself a solid base to your round. ‘Stick with a routine and just trust it,’ said the 2015 Trophee Hassan winner. ‘A lot of the time on the range I try to recreate the shot I’m going to try to hit on the first tee get a good couple of those away on the range. ‘Then I just think that if I can do it on the range, then I can do it on the first tee. Just have confidence in yourself and if you swing confidently that’s half the battle. ‘Focus on your routine, focus on the process, pick as small a target as you can and commit to it. Simple, very simple!’

Dear sir, please move the clubhouse a little Every time I see the book lying on the table in the clubhouse foyer, I have to speed up to get past this temptation. “Suggestions”, it says on the cover. Since you ask, I’d like to suggest that every time his drive goes 50 yards past mine, John Williams resists the temptation to groan: “Oh hell, topped it again.” Because we inhabit a painfully imperfect world, all golfers have suggestions by the dozen. “The Suggestion Book” is a collection of comments made by members in their clubs’ book, compiled by Duncan Ferguson and John Wilson. Published by Amberley Publishing, of Stroud, a copy fell into my hands recently. Sadly,it is out of print. But their concerns – or some of them, at any rate – still ring true. Complaints about the price of port and the absence of pen nibs in the lounge, sound like echoes from the Dark Ages. However, we all know how Lord Brabazon of Tara felt, when, protesting about a waterlogged course, demanded: “That the water in the bunkers at the 13th be changed.” And who has not been tempted to write something along the lines of the Rye member who in 1970 asked the clubhouse could be moved a little to the left, to prevents shots at the 18th pitching on the roof? The club replied that whilst sympathising with this proposal they regretted there was insufficient club land available. And a Broadstone member came up with an idea in 1972 that is just as exciting today. He said all the downhills should be left but
the uphills be made level. “Noted” was the official, cool response. Some of the club secretaries welcomed the chance for imaginative solutions. When a member at the Royal St George’s suggested the back tee at the 12th shouldn’t be used during high tides, unless raft and lifebelts were provided, he got the reassurance that the Ramsgate lifeboat would be alerted. Some of these complaints you could hear today. Like the Hindhead member suggested that the lake on the 5th was so beautiful that it should be made permanent, and a Bearsted member thought that if they put sand in the gravel pit next to the 13th they could call it a bunker. From the Temple club, the idea that there should be a bell on the 15th was dismissed because it might disturb the secretary. The members at the Royal Ashdown were full of ideas. In 1900 they rebelliously suggested that golf balls should be on sale in the club on the Sabbath and five years’ later were demanding that pipe-cleaners (feather) should be dispersed around the smoking room. In 1986, they were demanding that the club employ someone with legible handwriting and an elementary knowledge of arithmetic to make reports of competitions. “Of late these have been masterpieces of profound inaccuracy.” The Royal Wimbledon responded to a call for a ping-pong table by thundering “Under no circumstances whatever”. Goodness knows golfers are a fastidious lot, but I was a little surprised to see, as recently as 1994, when a member of North Hants complained that the staff were unable to provide a light for his cigar.

“The problem could be solved,” came the sharp response, “by the purchase of a lighter to be kept in one’s possession.” But no-one could match the misery of the Royal Wimbledon golfer who
in 1968 wrote: “No Club Stilton. Females at every table.” You have the feeling he would’ve been happier with: “No females. Club Stilton at every table.”

Warren Wins Southampton Open 2018 Jack Warren (Stoneham Golf Club) returned outstanding cards in difficult circumstances to win the Southampton Open Championship by one shot. His score of 69 and 72 beat second placed Ryan Moody holding his nerve over the second round. The event attracted a very strong field with 58 players, the large majority of which held a handicap of 6 or less. With such strong contingents from South Winchester, Stoneham and the home club, it was surprising that no competitor beat par. Reflecting on his achievements, Jack commented “everything just went my way. I just went out and played my best golf. I was quite nervous in the second round but was really pleased that I was able to hold it together. It means a lot to me to be the Open Champion”. Event organiser, Bill Webb, said “This was a truly fantastic field with support from all our usual clubs. With so many low handicap players in the field, Jack has played really well to come out on top”.
The Michael Avellino Trophy This year, fierce competition ensued for the Michael Avellino Champion of Champions Trophy (The Southampton Opens main sponsor), decided by the 9 best scores from each club added together. Southampton were this year’s winners beating Stoneham by a single shot, who also beat Romsey (last years winners of the champions Club Cup) by one shot also, South Winchester Golf Club (the inugeral winners of the cup 2 years ago were this year pushed into 4th place)The trophy was presented to Steve Hodder to be retained for the year. Mike Cook, the Event Secretary was left to wonder about the impact the weather had on the event. “Both rounds were played in glorious sunshine but with the afternoon round lacking the cooling breeze we had in the morning. Some of the players came off the course feeling very hot and thirsty.” Ryan Moody (Stoneham) beat George Nicholson-Jack (Romsey) into third place on countback in the gross competition. Home player Jake Hennen (Southampton) took the nett prize with a score of 135 closely followed by his Captain Steve Hodder (Southampton) and Alex Bampton (Romsey). The Hayling Trophy The Hayling Trophy is a round robin matchplay competition for handicaps 25-36. There are 20 teams of five in the competition, mainly from South Hampshire. It’s a competition that is always played in great spirit and enthusiasm. 2018 marked the 15th year of the Hayling Trophy, and it was played at Hayling Golf Club on Thursday 21 June. The two clubs competing for the trophy this year were Hartley Wintney and Royal Winchester It was a typical day for golf at Hayling, bright and breezy, but with the extra challenge of very dry conditions… wispy, long rough was waiting to gather up any balls that strayed off the fairway… Hartley Wintney defended their title as winners in 2017 and Royal Winchester eagerly tried to win the Hayling Trophy on their third attempt, having been runners-up in both 2011 and 2016. It was a very evenly fought match, but the competition was decided by the final match being won by Hartley Wintney. It was a wonderful day for everyone and once again the Hayling Trophy has proved to be an extremely popular and enjoyable competition.

Lee Westwood has donated thousands of pounds worth of memorabilia to an Edinburgh charity shop after moving to the city.
Fans all round the world have been mourning the passing of Peter Thomson, one of golf’s and Australia’s greatest players. Thomson, a five-time Open Championship winner, died aged 88. He had been suffering from Parkinson’s disease for more than four years and died at his home in Melbourne, Golf Australia said. In 1954, he became the first Australian to claim the Open Championship in Britain. He is survived by his wife, Mary, four children, 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Among numerous accolades, Thomson was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1979 and an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2001. Only four other golfers - Harry Vardon, JH Taylor, James Braid and Tom Watson - have won as many Open Championships. Thomson also had great success on the American circuit. In addition to his playing achievements, he went on to be president of the Australian PGA for 32 years and helped establish the Asian Tour. Tributes posted online celebrated him as a towering figure of the sport. Martin Slumbers, Chief Executive of The R&A, said, ‘It is with great sadness that we have awoken to the news of the passing of Peter Thomson. ‘Peter was a true gentleman and will be forever
Switch pays off for Molinari A diary switch paid dividends for Francesco Molinari as he won his first PGA Tour title with a runaway eightshot victory at the Quicken Loans National in Maryland. The two-time European Ryder Cup team member moved from 123rd to 42nd in the FedEx Cup standings and justified his decision to play at the tournament rather than take part in the European Tour’s French Open. ‘I came here obviously because I was right on the bubble in the FedEx and I wanted to gain a better position, so I guess job done,’ he said. He is the first Italian to win on US soil since Toney Penna in 1954.

The Ryder Cup stalwart gifted the personal items to Shelter Scotland’s Morningside shop. Among them are his Ryder Cup team caps including Valhalla 2008 and a signed cap from his Gleneagles win in 2014. There are also five Ping ‘Westy’ caps. Westwood said: ‘Not everyone is as fortunate as I have been in my career so I am just glad to be able to give something back and support Shelter Scotland in its fight to help people facing bad housing and homelessness.’ Graeme Brown, director of Shelter Scotland, said: ‘I can’t thank Lee Westwood enough for his very generous and much-appreciated donation. ‘It is even more special in this our 50th year as there is so much that still needs doing in Scotland to fight bad housing and homelessness.’ Tony Foster, manager of the Morningside shop, said: ‘As a golf player and fan since my childhood it’s an absolute treat to receive such an amazing donation from a player I’ve watched and admired for over 20 years.’
Karen in England success at European seminar A Hampshire delegate was part of an England Golf team of volunteer course raters who proved they are on top of their game when they beat off a challenge from over 20 other European countries. Karen Hearn, from Warwickshire, Rosemary Rice of Surrey, Jackie Keay of Hampshire and Mark Ward of Kent represented England at course rating seminar in Vienna, attended by teams from countries and golf associations across Europe. They came out on top when all the teams undertook a series of tasks to show how each country
rates and evaluates the golf courses under its jurisdiction and how that compares to the master rating, set by the United States Golf Association. Gemma Hunter, England Golf Handicap and Course Rating Manager, remarked: ‘Our course rating teams are very knowledgeable and we were absolutely delighted to prove this to the rest of Europe!’ England Golf has over 70 volunteer teams who rate the courses at its 1,900-plus affiliated clubs, giving them a standard scratch score which is

New Women Golfers Find Their Feet At Foxhills New women golfers have now been officially bitten by the bug after Foxhills Club & Resort opened its doors to host an introductory women’s golf day. The historic Surrey resort welcomed more than 30 women - ranging from teenagers to women in their 60s - to learn the basic technique of the swing and take their first steps in the sport. While some had limited experience of golf, most had never even swung a club before. But the event has proved a huge success with several of the participants already signed up for more coaching sessions and some keen to join up with a membership at one of Surrey’s leading golf resorts. Foxhills assistant professional, Lauren Blease, said: “It’s fantastic to see women genuinely engaged in golf, especially as many of them had never really thought about playing before. “ Most of the women had never played at all, while some had had a little experience a few years ago but never really taken up the sport properly. “ We already have 10 women signed up for group coaching sessions and several have enquired about memberships. We saw plenty of raw talent on the day and hopefully they will go on to become regular golfers in the future. Like anyone who decides to take up the sport, they just need some encouragement, some coaching and they will flourish.” As part of the experience, there was a one-hour Pilates for Golf session hosted by Linda Segerstam of The Intelligent Core, which underlined the health benefits to improve core stability and flexibility, while the women also indulged in Foxhills’ award-wining spa facilities. Blease said: “We just want to break down a few of those barriers when it comes to encouraging women to take up golf and they will have seen that it’s fun, good exercise and a challenging sport. There’s also the great social side of it too.” After the success, Foxhills is already planning a second women’s golf day later in the year but for those who can’t wait to get involved, spaces are available to join women-only group coaching sessions for beginners. Picturesque Pembrokeshire Newport Links, which was a nine hole course with undulating fairways and postage stamp greens. It was extended to 18 holes in 2008, and though the two loops are very different in nature, each has holes to remember. It is set on the coast under Carningli (mountain of the angels) in the Pembrokeshire Coastal National Park. There was a £1.5 million development a few years ago to provide accommodation in twelve twin bedded rooms and three luxury suites. It is an ideal location to be based for walking, game fishing, nature and of course, golf.
The purpose of my travels is usually the single pursuit of golf, but the motivation, on this occasion, for the visit to the far south west of Wales was slightly different, but one that often goes hand in hand with my golf ventures. Ornithology is the reason, and the season to see the puffins, shearwaters and gannets runs until the end of July. The coastal region of Pembrokeshire with the islands of Ramsey, Skomer, Skokholm and Grasholm is abounding with sea birds, which return each year to nest. The bonus is the likelihood of also seeing whales, porpoises, seals and sunfish as you cruise the islands. The region abounds in wildlife, and the nature reserve at Teifi Marshes near to Cardigan is well within distance, affording a chance to see the elusive kingfishers. The county and the offshore islands are steeped in history, the region is blessed with a wonderful coastline and landscapes, and heritage, with castles, churches and a very special cathedral. The cathedral and bishops palace is located in St David’s City, which is the smallest city in the United Kingdom. The city is where we set our base to travel, play golf, and go on bird watching expeditions. Suffice to say that the visit to Ramsey Island and the coast around was spectacular, sadly the sea conditions prevented a cruise out to the more distant islands, but the sightings of sea birds and seals and porpoises were ample reward. To return to the golfing scene, here again the quality and variety of golf available is amazing. From the classic links of Tenby, to the tiny cliff top course at St Davids, the choice is wide and varied. Our first port of call was at Haverfordwest, on the main A40 road, a parkland course presented in first class condition. Not long, but a pleasure to play, and the ideal christening after a long drive. The views to the Presilli Mountains provide the perfect backdrop. The big challenge was next on the agenda, thanks to the hospitality of the Club members, Tenby was the venue to test how well the clubs were to perform. Standing on the first tee, looking to
the saddle gap in the hills it was question time. Fortunately those sticks, which have a mind of their own, decided to co-operate, and a delightful round ensued. The James Braid designed layout was a test from first to last, and with a fluctuating wind, pars were a victory. A classic out and back links, with fabulous views over the sea, and even a reminder of National Service, with the rifle butts visible from the 8th tee. This is a club steeped in history, formed in 1888, but with evidence of golf played many years prior, the club was a founding member of the Welsh Golf Union in 1895. Records show that the first player to break 100 at Tenby, was the club professional P Nihook, who played the nine hole course twice and shot 78. The 18 hole course opened a few years later in 1907, and it has prospered since then. This course is a must for golf aficionados, with wonderful holes that tease and torment, but reward the good shots, even the blind holes have a forgiving green waiting behind the dunes. The last outing could not have been more of a contrast to such a classic links, it was a visit to the nine hole St David’s City course, set on the cliff tops overlooking Whitesands Bay. This charming links still has an honesty box, and a means to make a coffee after the round.
Nearby Milford Haven is a meadowland course, which was originally 9 holes but is now 18 holes. The vista of the Haven is seen from the 7th hole, appropriately named The Jetty, and from the 10th “Doc’s” you can see Gellyswick Bay and the Napoleonic Fort on the hill. The upstairs lounge in the clubhouse offers excellent views across the course whilst enjoying a refresher after the round. More recent additions to the golfing menu are Priskilly Forest and Trefloyne, both of which opened in the 1990’s. They are parkland courses, and like all the clubs in Pembrokeshire, they welcome visitors. Pembrokeshire Golf has been positive in offering golf packages, and with a little searching it is possible to play a choice of three courses for around £75.00, a real bargain. A wonderful county for golf and outdoor pursuits, and one that will surely become more and more popular as the area becomes recognised as a varied and quality golfing destination, one to be savoured. It felt to me that time seemed to almost stand still as he started his downswing. The motion was so smooth and unhurried. The ball, I might add, went off like a rocket.
