Not bad for an ‘old man’ - Stenson became the fourth man over 40 to win the Claret Jug in the past six years, following Darren Clarke (Sandwich, 2011), Ernie Els (Lytham, 2012) and Mickelson himself (Muirfield, 2013). Stenson, runner-up to Mickelson in 2013, said: ‘It makes it even more special to beat a competitor like Phil. Rory in a tirade against Olympics A STEELY-eyed Rory McIlroy came out fighting with an amazing outburst as he justified being one of the world’s top four golfers who have declined to play in this month’s Olympics.
THE rest of the golfing world was still reaching for superlatives after Henrik Stenson won his first Major with victory at The Open in Troon.
That magical final round, where his battle with Phil Mickelson was being compared to the legendary 1977 Duel in the Sun at neighbouring Turnberry when Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus went head to head, gave Stenson his first Open at the 12th attempt. And it rewrote the record books.

McIlroy defends the Rio golfing dropouts RORY McIlroy says the number of leading players pulling out of golf’s return to the Olympics this month after a 112-year absence should not be an embarrassment for the sport. World number three McIlroy, 27, and world number one Jason Day are among those not competing in Rio, citing fears about the Zika virus. The Northern Irishman said the Games were not the pinnacle for golfers: ‘Most athletes dream of competing in the Olympics. We dream of winning Claret Jugs and Green Jackets.’ Ireland's London 2012 gold medal boxer Katie Taylor questioned the golfers' decision and said: ‘There is more chance of getting killed by a spider in Australia than there is of contracting Zika in Brazil.’ The mosquito-borne virus has been linked to defects in newborn babies, prompting sports people who are thinking about starting a family to take extra precautions. Olympic chiefs and the World Health Organisation have issued guidance for

There's another Games in Tokyo in 2020 and I'm more than happy to wait until then to get that Olympic experience.’ Jason Day became the sixth high-profile player to pull out of the Games recently, joining fellow Australian Marc Leishman, Fiji's Vijay Singh, South Africa's Branden Grace, Japan's Hideki Matsuyama and
Ireland’s McIlroy and Graeme McDowell. Just one female player, South Africa's world number 38 Lee-Anne Pace, has withdrawn because of Zika. Masters winner Danny Willett says he is willing to take part. He told BBC Sport: ‘For the sake of one week out of every four years, I feel it's a risk I'm potentially willing to take.’ Two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson has also committed to competing in Brazil. ‘If I was planning on having more kids, I would not go,’ he said.
‘But I'm not, so my decision was a lot easier.’

Will golf be invited back after Tokyo? FOLLOWING the withdrawal of many senior golfers from the Rio Olympics, fears are growing that the International Olympic Committee might not invite the sport back after the Tokyo Games in 2020. One of golf's biggest sponsors is warning the sport not to squander the opportunity of returning to two Olympics cycles after a 112 year absence. Giles Morgan, HSBC's global head of sponsorship, says the sport has to make the most of its appearance after more than a century: ‘My hope is that they can use the Olympic Games as a wonderful catalyst to help grow the audience base,’ he told BBC Sport.
‘I think many of the golfers don't realise quite how big the Olympics television and media exposure will give them,’ he added. ‘The 21st Century is changing how sports are consumed and played. If you were to ask any sport if they could have an opportunity to grow their sport and use the Olympic Games as their vehicle, many would be absolutely champing at the bit. ‘It wasn't like the Olympics came to golf, golf applied through the whole process. ‘Sometimes, sports and sports people can fall into the danger that the universe they live in is the only universe.’

‘He told me earlier in the season I was deserving of a Major championship and I said to him, “You'll probably not like it if you are on the end of it” but I want to thank him for a great couple of days. ‘I had to play at my best to get it over the finish line. I lost a dear friend on Wednesday morning in the United States from cancer and I feel like he has been with me all week, Mike this one is for you. ‘My turn’ ‘It was a great match. I knew he wasn't going to back down at any point and that made it easier. I knew I had to keep on pushing. ‘My previous record in Majors is not something you want to keep on hearing, but I just felt like this was going to be my turn.’ The quality of the final pairing was reflected in the fact that Mickelson, who dropped just four shots all week, finished no fewer than 11 shots better off than third-placed JB Holmes. His 17-under total would have won 140 of the previous 144 Championships.
‘I played well enough to win by a number of strokes and got beat,’ said Mickelson. ‘I'm happy with the way I played, but disappointed it wasn't enough. I played a bogey-free round and shot 65 in the final round of a Major, usually that's good enough to do it. ‘It's disappointing to come in second, but I'm happy for Henrik. He's really a great champion. We've been friends for some time. I've always thought that he is one of the best ball-strikers in the game and that Major championships are perfectly suited for him. ‘I knew that he would ultimately come through and win and I'm happy that he did.’ Rory McIlroy (67) and England's Tyrrell Hatton (68) tied fifth on four under. They finished on the same mark as Spain's Sergio Garcia (69), and one behind American Steve Stricker (69). Like McIlroy, Jordan Spieth saved his best round of the week for Sunday, the American's 68 lifting him to two over. An unexpected star emerged in the rolypoly shape of bearded Andrew Johnston, 27, from North Middlesex Golf Club, just having fun as he made his way into eighth place and a prize pot of £170,000.

THE MAGICAL ISLAND OF MALLORCA Since the early 1960’s, when golf first returned to Mallorca, there has been an explosion of golf courses on all parts of the island. The first courses were built within a short distance from Michael Rees the airport, near the capital city of Palma, a very beautiful city. The first was built at Son Vida in 1964, but there had been a golf course on the island many years earlier. The Hotel Golf Playa de Alcudia was built in 1934, but it went out of existence due to the Spanish Civil War. Then many years later, Son Vida was made famous by the European Tour victories of Seve Ballesteros in 1990 and 1994, the Spanish magician did that to many locations. Son Gual is recognised by most golfers as the outstanding golf course on the island today, but these two are just the tip of the iceberg. On this visit we were to explore some of the lesser known gems waiting to be discovered throughout the island. My introduction to golf on the island came with a visit to Real Golf de Bendinat several years ago; it is set out on a magnificent stretch of countryside, with wooded steep hills and valleys, with severe changes in elevation, the perfect terrain for the creation of a golfing arena. No surprise that there are numerous elevated tees on this course, they positively scream to be utilised. It was designed by Martin Hawtree and he made maximum use of the wonderful setting and the first nine holes opened for play in 1986, later extended to eighteen holes. As the terroir makes the grape and the wine, so the terrain defines the golf course. It has remained my personal favourite, and the view of the castle from the elevated tee on the back nine is one that stays in the memory. Although it has perhaps been overtaken by some of the other great courses on the island, it is always on my must visit list, and it no surprise that the course has been awarded the Audibon Certificate for conservation. Without doubt there are some magnificent courses in Mallorca, the marvellous climate and dependable weather, make it an obvious choice for golfers from Northern Europe throughout the year, it is a destination that is progressively increasing in popularity with UK players. The frequency and ease of flights from many regional airports, as well as
London is a positive advantage. Monarch has flights which operate from Birmingham, Gatwick, Luton, Leeds Bradford, and Manchester, with flights starting from £59 one way or £130 return. Our first port of call was to the Arabella Golf Resort at Son Vida, sadly not to play the course due to a fixture clash, but to sample a newer sibling on the same site. After a first class lunch in the clubhouse, it was over the way to Son Quint. Son Quint is one of the newer courses on the island, designed by Ramon Espinosa and K Rossknecht and opened for play in 2007. It was the ideal way to get our visit under way, not too strenuous but with generous fairways lined with pines and native olive trees and with large greens,

but still requiring good driving to score well. The back nine is the better of the two nines, with the 10th and the 12th holes defended by lakes. Take time to admire the views from the elevated location on the 8th, Palma cathedral is quite special, and the views of Palma Bay complete the picture. A most enjoyable opener, that bodes well for the trip. Our next venue would be in the north of the island, to play two courses, Club de Golf Son Servera and Capdeperera, so it was back to the bus for our journey and overnight stay at Hotel Serrano Palace in Cala Ratjada. Despite the fact that we arrived late, the staff were excellent in making us welcome, settling everyone in, and arranging for a late dinner to be served.
The buffet style meals which got the thumbs up from all the party, followed then by a stroll along the seafront to sample the lively and varied assortment of bars and restaurants open late into the night. A nightcap proved to be the perfect way to end the day before returning to a very comfortable bed after a long and enjoyable day. The fifth Burley Golf Club Festival of Golf was held in July and there was a Mixed Open, Senior's Open, Ladies Open and a Corporate Team Open and competitors came from far and wide to challenge the Burley course. This year’s South Region County Match Week between Hampshire, Surrey, Kent, Middlesex and Sussex was hosted by Surrey and played at Walton Heath Golf Club. Our Hampshire team started with a win against Kent on day 1, which included a terrific hole in one from Kerry Smith on the 2nd hole. Our 2nd match against Surrey had some very close matches but we had to settle for a halve. The 3rd day saw Hampshire get a win against Middlesex and we knew we needed a win against Sussex our final opponents. Unfortunately, with a tough loss to Sussex, this year’s campaign had come to an end.
During the week we saw some great golf from every County’s 1st team players and all matches were played in a wonderful spirit. Congratulations to Surrey who remained undefeated and will go on to represent our region at the National Finals at Waterlooville GC on 12 – 16th September 2016. Thank you to all our Hampshire players for making the week so enjoyable and our supporters who made the journey to Walton Heath.

It was very close at the top with only one point separating the top six pairs. The Senior's Open, a stableford pairs competition, was played in wind, showers and sunny conditions quite normal for this year. Scoring was a credit to the players and resulted in a close finish.
In the end the winners were Colin Chard and Bob Butcher from Knighton Heath with 43 points and they won on countback from Roger Elcomb and Peter Elliot from Ashley Wood. Martin Rudderham from Chilworth and Adrian Nichol from Hockley were a creditable third with 42 points. John Diment

Continuing the saga of a late-convert golfer’s search for glory on the greens. . . DO you know, this is the second time in my life that I have been a flexi? The first was as a young man when I used to take girls home in my car – a 1933 Austin Ruby. This combination – a girlfriend and a pre-war car the size of a shoebox – called for the flexibility of a fullyqualified contortionist. Either that or you went into the priesthood. And now, here I am, a flexi again, and all because golf clubs are struggling financially. All clubs are conducting a drastic revision of their memberships systems, with the idea – presumably – of coaxing a little more cash out of their members. A bit belatedly, my club’s joined the rush, and it’s making quite a few changes to our lives. We now pay for our golf by buying flexi vouchers whose value diminishes as the day does on. The idea is to steer us away from the peak traffic in the morning into the deserted fairways of the afternoons. In other words, the later you play, the more golf you get for your money. It’s been a bit of a shock for our group, who were known as the Wednesday Tenners (that was the day and time we played).
Langdon: My finest moment ROSS Langdon described winning his first order of merit tournament as his finest moment in golf as, below he held the Dudsbury Masters trophy after a thrilling final day battle. The 28-year-old Brickhampton Court teaching pro from Gloucester started two shots behind home favourites Lee Thompson and Mark Wiggett, his playing partners in the final group. Yet he finished one shot ahead on fiveunder-par 137 after a second round 69. Defending champion Thompson and another veteran Liam Bond (St Pierre), who carded a best-of-the-day 66, shared second while Wiggett slipped back after a series of putting woes. By the time he had eagled the sixth after birdies at the second and fourth Langdon led by two shots and never really looked back.

It’s great to see our South African PGA professional Nico Els top the leader board at the recent PGA South Region Pro-Am played at Cuddington Golf Club in Banstead. Nico secured his win 3 shots ahead of his nearest competitor with an impressive -6 score.

Hampshire won the England Golf Qualifier at Calcot Park Golf Club in Reading on July 10th. Hampshire beat 10 other Counties to win the Qualifier. Hampshire finished three shots ahead of Surrey. Hampshire now go to England Golf's County Finals at Sandwell Park Golf Club in September.
friendships were made out on the course, but the golf was a deadly serious affair. In all 28 disabled and impaired golfers took part in this inaugural Open held on Friday 8th July 2016. Wychwood Park only opened in 2002 and within a year it hosted a Europro Tour Event and has played host to the English Deaf Golfers Association – and now they can add the Disabled Golf Association to their string of accolades. It’s a monster of a course where a buggy is perhaps recommended and with their club championships the next day the course was in tip-top condition with greens like grease-lightening. It is particularly open on the back nine and the wind was up easily taking the ball 60yards off course. If you went in the rough (particularly just in front of the tee) that was another ball lost. So it was a course that would pull our top players to the fore, a thinking man’s course if you will. There are fond memories of the par-3s, the 6th and the 17th, with the monster 7th par-5, and the even longer 12th perhaps best forgotten. Contemplate a trip to the tropical island of Mauritius and the image of a tropical paradise leaps to mind. A place of golden white sands, azure blue seas, and swaying palm trees is one that awaits each and every visitor to this very special island. The island is set in the Indian Ocean, with numerous little offshore mini island retreats, and an aura of luxury that pervades the hotels which cater for the many visiting golfers, but for hedonistic pleasure seekers who love the sun, sea and good food.

One & Only has been ranked by Golf World in the top one hundred course in the world, and it is easy to see why. It is hard to find a hole that does not stick in the memory, my personal test for the quality of a golf course.
MAGICAL MAURITIUS
SHANGRI LA LE TOUSSEROK
So what are the facts about Mauritius, well it is an island 65 kilometres long and 45 kilometres wide, and it sits 1800 kilometres from the east coast of Africa. It was originally a Dutch colony, and the Dutch introduced sugar cane and tobacco to the island, products which became of significant commercial importance in the past. It has a varied history, it passed from the Dutch to the French, then the British before obtaining independence in 1968, and it became a republic as recently as 1992. It is an island of volcanic peaks and ridges, the highest point is Piton de la Riviere Noire at just under 3000 feet. Like the oft seen image, it has a coastline of inlets and lagoons, with miles of white sand lapped by beautiful blue seas. There is much more to Mauritius than golf, there are plenty of water sports related activities, as well as tennis and horse riding, and pools and beaches offer places to relax and top up the tan. Having said all that, Mauritius really is a golfing haven, there are several excellent golf courses, many of which are attached to the hotel complexes. The quality is a delight and well worth the twelve hour flight to get to this idyllic location. The name says it all, “One & Only”, Le Touessrok Resort is set on a beautiful stretch of white sand overlooking the tranquil Trou d’Eau Douce Bay, just fifty minutes from the airport and the same distance from the capital Port Louis. The hotel is the height of luxury, from the time the guests enter the dramatic light filled lobby, with views out across the free form swimming pool to the lovely curve of the bay. There is a wooden bridge to Frangipani Island which houses the Givenchy Spa and the superbly equipped

Bernhard Langer summed up his work by saying “What I have aspired to create is a golfing experience that truly arouses all the senses. From the amazing natural setting to the challenges presented by the course. I want it to be a game to remember for all who play”. There is a wide variety of additional activities, naturally many associated with the water, kayaking, surfing, sailing scuba and kiting, para sailing and big game fishing. If you seek something a little less energetic, the “Chi” spa offers luxurious treatments, with a traditional Chinese emphasis, all contributing to your personal place of enchantment. After a six month refurbishment the whole complex is a delight, exotic dining and everything geared to make the visit the most enjoyable possible.
Fitness Centre. There are six restaurants, each with its own particular ambience, and most important of all there is the golf course. The championship layout, “One & Only”, what a great choice of title, it is on it’s own tropical island, Ile Aux Cerfs (Island of deer) , the deer have long since gone, though there is talk of re-introducing them. It is a Bernhard Langer design, fringed by white sands and with a backdrop of green mountains. The island is perfect for golf, as the coastline has many little bays and inlets, the land naturally undulates, and there are natural hazards, volcanic rock

outcrops, lakes and gullies and a profusion of tropical trees and vegetation. Langer has designed a course for all standards, with four sets of tees on each hole to accommodate any golfer, though his greens are small and undulating, and need attention, firstly to get onto them and then to hole the putts. The names of the holes reflect the environment, Lava Rock, Tidal Pool, Mangrove, and Plateau Verde, which is a delightful little gem, just 125 yards long, but the green is surrounded by mangrove trees and lava outcrops and is very intimidating. The 11th is a monster par 5, 618 yards and is called Round the Bend, played
In summary, a wonderful golf course of over 7000 yards, but one from the forward tees that can provide an enjoyable and rewarding game, and of course the wonderful views are the bonus, that will be a permanent feature during the whole stay on the island, and to stay on site at the hotel, would be the icing on the cake.. The whole island of Mauritius is truly magical, the style and the elegance have an African ambiance, there is the widest possible choice of cuisine, spa and fitness facilities par excellence, and some of the most wonderful courses in the world. For the holiday golfer, a true golfing Garden of Eden, the only problem will be to drag yourself away at the end of the trip. P. Llewellyn

Crucial moments can cause emotional outbursts, unsolicited advice can wear patience thin, and the ‘glum goblins’ can appear when the match isn’t going very well. The most stressful golf partnership can be when playing with your husband, wife or ‘other half’ and a great example is when a friend of mine recently played with her husband. She hit the ball badly and it ended up tumbling into a water hazard. Already feeling frustrated and angry with herself, her husband unfortunately poured fuel onto the fire and made the fatal mistake of muttering the words “why did you do that”? Before he could draw breath her hackles went up and she asked him angrily whether he really thought she’d deliberately struck the ball with the intention of landing up in such a dire place. As you can imagine, he’s never asked the same question again since! Most golfing partners apologise on the first tee for any bad shots thereafter, however, tension can still build up and subtle clues about the stress levels can be identified by the choice of words used during a game, especially if playing with your other half:
‘FINE’ is a word that’s often used to end a disagreement, particularly when they think they are right and you probably need to keep quiet ‘NOTHING’ usually means ‘Something’ and you need to be worried ‘GO AHEAD IF YOU WANT TO’ means ‘dare if you must but you certainly don’t have my permission’, so you’re best not doing it
‘WHATEVER’ is a verbal statement meaning I’m no longer listening to you ‘IT’S OKAY’ generally means it’s not really okay and they’re thinking long and hard on how and when you’ll be reminded of your mistake Having a golfing partner in life can be a wonderful way of sharing the amusing and subtle moments of the game, something that usually goes over the head of most nongolfers. Mind you, if you’ve ever had to listen to an enthusiastic hole-by-hole account of your partner’s game, you’ll be familiar with the feeling of brain numbness by the time they’ve recalled how they holed out on the 6th green. LEGENDS OF THE GAME... ARNAUD MASSEY – THE FRENCH PIONEER The Pay de Basque region of France was brought to the attention of the fashionable English community by the writings of Victor Hugo. The town of Biarritz became the choice of the aristocracy for their summer jaunts, and with them came the game of golf. Edward Prince of Wales and Mrs Simpson were regular visitors, and the future King was a regular golfer. This little corner of South West France had a profound impact on the game around the turn of the 19th Century; the first course had been built in 1888, called simply Le Phare. On the 6th July 1877, Arnaud Massey was born, his parents lived on a sheep farm, but when he was 14 years old he went to work on fishing boats, and in his spare time he caddied at the golf club. Many famous people played at the club, among them Horace Hutchinson, Charles Hutchings and Everad A Hambro. Like many caddies over the years, he learned by copying the good players, and rapidly became very proficient. In 1883 when he was just 16, he won the “Prix des Cadets” and received a golden Louis and a gold medal, prizes he cherished for many years. He had started to play left handed, but then rebuilt his technique to play right handed with a two handed grip and a very distinctive swing with a loop at the top, which became known as “the Massey’s pigtail”. In 1898 he was invited to go to Scotland for the summer by Everad Hambro, a member at North Berwick. He was met at the station by club Pro Davie Grant in a horse and trap. After that he returned to North Berwick every season, he played regularly with the best Scottish golfers, both amateur and professional.

Massey entered the Open Championship for the first time in 1902, and tied for tenth place with Andrew Kirkaldy, it was the first time a foreign player had entered.

that his wife had given birth to a baby girl, who they christened Margot, and second name of Hoylake. When he returned to North Berwick the town band was playing “See the Conquering Hero”.
He kept his record of winning newly instituted Open Championships when he won the first Spanish title in 1912.
He joined the PGA the following year, as assistant to Ben Sayers, and that year married a local girl Janet Punton Henderson. In 1905 he entered The Open as representing North Berwick, finished 5th and won £7.10s. He was beginning to make progress, and in 1905 he won the inaugural French Open Championship, the first of a record four times Champion. The growth of the popularity of golf in Europe can be attributed to Arnaud Massey, Ben Sayers, Davie Grant and Jack White the 1904 Open Champion, who won at Royal St Georges after holding off the challenge of James Braid and J H Taylor. They took part in exhibition matches throughout the continent. In 1907 he achieved his greatest triumph when he won The Open Championship in foul weather at Hoylake by a shot from J H Taylor. He had become the very first non-Britain to win the coveted Open Championship. As he was presented with the Claret Jug he learnt
He record was simply marvellous, numerous open championships and he had finished in the top ten in The Open nine times before World War 1 intervened. Massey was wounded in the war at Verdun, and after the conflict he returned to Biarritz as the professional at La Nivelle for winter and Deauville in the summer.

The following week, a group of the very best players went to La Boulie, his club near Versailles, to honour his achievement and play in the second French Open Championship and despite the presence of the British stars. Arnaud Massey retained his French Open title. Massey continued his successful tournament play with three wins in 1908, but managed to finish 9th in The Open. The following year he won the first Belgian Open played at the Royal Golf Club. He narrowly lost The Open in 1911, losing a playoff with Harry Vardon.
In 1926 he went to the United States with Archie Compston where they met Bobby Jones, and beat the famous man and his partner Watts Gun by 3&2. In 1928 he joined Chantaco, a new club created by the Lacoste family, but despite so many successful years he could not settle, his rather gruff and at times irritable nature let him down. He became involved in course design, with some small success. He later spent some time in Edinburgh where his daughters, Margot and Lena lived before he finally returned to France and retired to live in Etretat in Normandy. It is sad to record that after such a long and successful golfing career, he passed away in poverty in April 1960. Arnaud Massey was the man who pioneered the way for golfers from Europe, who became the first foreign Open Champion, and who won most of the European Open Championships as they were started. The next golfer from Europe to win one of the major championships would not make an appearance until Seve Ballesteros achieved success when he won the Claret Jug at Royal Lytham & St Anne’s in 1979. Arnaud Massey is a golfer who fully justifies the title of Legend of the Game.

Waterlooville Golf Club to Host 2016 English Women’s County Finals
Waterlooville Golf Club (WGC) is delighted to announce its selection to host the 2016 English Women’s County Finals this September. It will join a stellar list of English courses that have hosted the championship which was first contested in 1953 at Prince’s Golf Course in Kent .

The Blackmoor duo had tied on 137, one-under-par for the 36 hole Championship. The play-off started at the 10th, which was halved. Both players then missed the 18th green with their second shots. Burgess played up to within three feet of the hole leaving Lobacz with a very tricky 20 yard shot down the hill from the very edge of the Clubhouse patio. His ball raced down the slope, across

A true test of golf!” The five-day match play championship will be contested by six teams, each representing one of the regions: East, Midlands North, Midlands South, North, South and South West. During the tournament’s long history, the Hampshire ladies’ team have won the title four times including most recently in 2014 at Belton Park GC in Lincolnshire, when Waterlooville’s own scratch golfer Kerry Smith was a senior member of the squad securing 6.5 points out of a possible 8. Kerry has played in all four winning Hampshire teams. WGC Ladies’ Captain, Allison Bolam concludes: “This is a great compliment to our club. The prestige of the County Finals is growing every year, and it will be thrilling to watch the best lady amateur golfers in the country competing for the title on our fairways … and to see how Waterlooville is meant to be played!” The England County Finals will take place from Monday 12 – Friday 16 September, and entrance is FREE. Spectators are very welcome.
Father and Son Championship Double at the Meon Valley
Golf always throws up some interesting scenarios and the Meon Valley Club Championships proved no exception this year with a father and son combination made a clean sweep in both gross and net event. Richard and Jack Hayward took home the silverware at the 36 hole stroke play in June providing a first for the Meon Valley and a rare event within the world of golf. The event staged over two days, in June, played on a beautifully prepared course was organised by Phil Hayward, Past Captain, father to Richard and grandfather to Jack. Richard, the clubs Junior Organiser, was two off the pace overnight shooting 74 on day 1. Conditions worsened on day 2 with heavy morning rain and the wind increasing. Richard managed to draw level over the first 9 holes and continued to hold his nerve to secure victory on 18th winning by a shot from the following pack. Both Richard and Jack were supported by parents, wives and grandparents throughout the two days, making it real family affair.

The two gladiators – BALL? WHAT BALL? Simplify your swing thoughts to gain consistency on the course
What a feast of fantastic golf at this year’s Open. Phil and Henrik were like two gladiators fighting it out, each forcing the other to rise to new levels of golfing excellence. They certainly had contrasting styles of play, Phil more the artist and Henrik the machine. Their contrasting styles fit beautifully into the subject of this month’s article.
When you do a practice swing, what do you do? Brush the grass and finish the swing that's what. Concentrate on the contact with the turf and being balanced at the end of the swing. So why is it when we plonk a white dimply thing in way everything changes? We immediately start thinking, no, worrying about outcome. What will happen if we mess this shot up, how will it affect our scores, who's watching ready to fall about laughing if it all goes pear shaped. Familiar? Usually the worry stops a golfer from just letting the ball get in the way of a swing resulting in a hit at the ball rather than a swing through. This may sound particularly familiar in a pressure situation with an important score card in hand. So... Try to truly simplify your routine and execution of the shot in hand. Take a moment to visualise where you want your ball to go. Then comes the important practice swing. Brush the grass, make positive contact with the world and finish the swing. Now stride in and address your ball all the while thinking about getting whatever it's sat on (grass or tee) and not about where you don't want it to go or how you might fluff it. You are just going to make another practice swing getting through to a balanced finish. This may take a practice session or two to master but it's no use going to the range and bashing balls. While the evenings are still light take the opportunity to play a few holes and try to implement this approach to your shots out on the course. You need to trust it and believe you're going to hit the shot well.

This can only come to fruition when you've seen yourself succeed out on the course. So simply... Visualise the Shot. Rehearse the shot through a positive practice swing. Repeat positive practice swing making good contact with what was under the ball.
As you may remember, last month’s article was all about a way of swinging that could give you high levels of consistency. It featured three of my pupils who play consistently well and have the same characteristic. The characteristic is that in the downswing the shaft lines up with the right forearm well before impact. When the club lines up with the right forearm, the face of the clubface becomes square to the arc. If the club is square to the arc, before and after impact, the need for timing is taken away and the ball will be consistently hit with very little sidespin. Guess who I use as an example of this when I’m talking to a pupil. Yes you guessed it, Henrik Stenson. Stenson does this beautifully in his swing; that’s why he is able to hit shot after shot bullet straight!! I said in last month’s article that this month I would talk about what happens when the
club is lined up on the left arm as it approaches impact. When the club shaft aligns with the left arm as it approaches impact, the face of the club will be open to the arc until a fraction before it hits the ball. Because the club is square to the arc and becomes closed to the arc very shortly after impact. The more upright the shaft is at impact the faster the club tends to close. Because the club is square to the arc for such a small fraction of time through impact, the golfer who has this type of action can forget about trying to hit the ball straight. To get the most out of his game he has to shape the ball and allow for a margin of error. He also has to concentrate on rhythm and timing. He has to be more of an artist than a machine. The reason I said that the contrast between Phil and Henrik is perfect for this article was because Henrik approaches the ball on the right arm plane, whereas Phil approaches the ball on the left arm. Interesting that Phil has been trying to shallow out his swing recently - he’s obviously trying to be more of a machine!! Have a look at the pictures and notice the contrast in their swings.
