Citing research in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, Macmillan said golf may seem less energetic than more vigorous activities such as football, rugby or tennis, but can still offer a significant boost to your health.

Playing a game of golf is equivalent to a full week’s worth of other exercise, says Macmillan Cancer Support. Research suggests that it could even add as much as five years to life expectancy.

As a round of golf amounts to 240 minutes of moderate intensive activity, this goes beyond the Department of Health’s recommendation that adults take at least 150 minutes of this kind of exercise.

Macmillan says that during a typical round, players walk for four to eight miles, taking

One player who took several steps too far IT was the U.S. Open Qualifying, and Clifton McDonald stood on the first tee with high hopes of making the later stages. Eighteen holes later, his card (above) had achieved local history – with an eye-watering score of 127, no fewer than 55 shots over par. On his opening hole at Silver Lakes in Glencoe, Alabama, Clifton began badly with a double bogey seven. He was 14 over after six holes and then hacked 14 strokes on a par 5.

Most people would have walked off. But not Clifton. He doggedly played on to accumulate what the Alabama Golf Association described as ‘without doubt the highest score we’ve had in any qualifying event’.

The father of young Aaron emailed the European Tour to ask if there was anything they could do to mark his ninth birthday while he attended the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. It would be perfect, he said, if it could involve his four favourite golfers: Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston, Henrik Stenson, Martin Kaymer and Justin Rose.

Sweden’s Alex Noren gave the European Tour the perfect result as he won the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.

The overwhelming majority of the ranking points that have taken him to this elevated position have been earned on the European Tour.

Executive director Andy Priest told BBC Sport: ‘He was a nice guy. We got his scorecard and he confirmed what he had shot. You could tell he had had a long day. But you have to say the gentleman played it out.’

Noren has not been boosted by scooping points in Majors - all his successes have come from standard tour events. His followed wins at last year’s Scottish Open, European Masters, British Masters and Nedbank Challenge in South Africa.

LEGENDS OF THE GAME...

...DAVID STRATH - THE PLAY-OFF THAT NEVER WAS! Exploring the early years of the history of golf, and the legends that are part of it, the story of David Strath is hardly ever mentioned, though it does contain a unique incident. A St Andrews contemporary of Young Tom Morris, he was said by some to be the better golfer of the two. Sadly he was never to win The Open Championship, usually the ticket to everlasting fame in the golfing firmament, but his opportunity to do so sparked a controversy that deprived him of his chance to win the Claret Jug as Champion Golfer of the Year. David Strath was born in 1849 in West Burn Lane, St Andrews, although not from a traditional golfing family, he had two brothers who were also golf professionals, the elder Andrew had featured in the early years of The Open, and George the lesser player of the three who emigrated to America. Davie began his working life as a law clerk in St Andrews, and learned his golf from his elder brother Andrew, who was the head green-keeper at Musselburgh before moving to Prestwick, when Old Tom Morris moved to St Andrews. Davie turned professional in 1868, and entered his first tournament, the St Andrews PGA; he would go on to win three major professional events of the time, Carnoustie in 1870, St Andrews in 1873 and Glasgow in 1878. In 1872 he played in The Grand Professional Tournament at Royal Liverpool Golf Club, the first professional event ever held in England. It had been organised by Robert Chambers, the Captain of Royal Liverpool and the Tantallon Golf Clubs. The players were provided with rail tickets and an evening meal as guests of the club. Davie led for the first two rounds but was pipped by Young Tom Morris in the final round. The record for David Strath in The Open will show that he was second on three occasions, in 1870 when Young Tom Morris had a runaway victory by twelve shots, again in 1872, and finally came the notorious events of 1876. The day began in farce, when the members of the R&A were also playing the course, a scene unimaginable today. The links were crowded, by golfers, spectators and the professionals playing The Open Championship. For the first time in the event David Strath and Bob Martin tied after the requisite 36 holes and were due to play off for the Claret Jug. A protest was made, alleging that when Davie played his shot into the 17th green his ball had struck either a player or a spectator. The committee declined to give a decision and

ordered the play off pending the decision. Davie declined, saying he would not play if a decision was not given beforehand. The following Monday, Bob Martin duly walked the course on his own and was presented with the Claret Jug as Open Champion, after The Play Off That Never Was. However Davie’s reputation was enhanced when he later defeated three Open Champions, Bob Ferguson, Willie Park and Mungo Park in challenge matches at the North Berwick. It was during the early 1870’s that the matches played between Davie Strath and his very good friend Young Tom Morris were the big attraction. Both men were to die young; Tommy was just twenty four years old, and Davie twenty nine, a tragedy in both cases. They played head to head matches and drew huge crowds; thousands of spectators followed the matches. The first event was in 1869, and they then joined forces to defeat Open Champions David Park and Bob Ferguson. The Great Golf Match, reported in the national press, took place in July 1873, it was played over three days and six rounds all played at St Andrews. The purse was £50 which Tommy won, they played again, the same format in August when Davie turned the tables and won the match. It was described by eminent golf writer Horace Hutchinson thus “For brilliant and steady play, combined with the absence of mistakes, the golf Young Tom and Davie

Strath exhibited day after day has never been surpassed. Almost single handedly they increased the public interest in golf and gave their fellow professionals respectability.” Sadly by 1878 Davie had contracted tuberculosis, he was advised to travel to Australia for the winter. He sailed on 14th October on the fastest vessel of the day, the SS Eurynome; the journey would take 84 days. During the voyage he became ill with bronchial laryngitis arrived in Melbourne in poor health and died twenty days later. He was buried in an unmarked grave in Melbourne General Cemetery, after a mix-up when his name was mis-spelled Struth. This mistake was not remedied until two golf historians discovered the truth and arranged for a new and more appropriate headstone to be erected over his grave in 2005, over one hundred years after his death. It was funded by the St Andrews Golf Club and the Golf Society of Australia. Finally solving the mystery of his death, which had been reported in the Scottish press in March 1879. Two of the best of St Andrews golfers, David Strath and Young Tom Morris who lived short but spectacular years, and who both contributed massively to the development of golf and the reputation of St Andrews. At times partners and at others protagonists, who conducted themselves with dignity and let their skills shine for all to see. Lisbon was voted European Golf Destination of the Year in 2016, and it was no surprise, the area has everything for the discerning golfer, wonderful courses, great weather, superb food, convenient flights from numerous airports and a very big welcome on the mat.

The area now has an additional attraction, West Cliffs, a superb new golf course, designed to make maximum use of the fantastic landscape, and created so that every single hole has a view of the Atlantic Ocean. Located close to Praia del Rey, just one hour North of Lisbon, on the Silver Coast and near the ancient fortified town of Obidos, a UNESCO world heritage location, famed for it’s Medieval Market. The course finally opened in June 2017, played for the first time by a specially invited group of tour operators and golf/ travel journalists from all over Europe, to sample and report on the links and to meet the course designer Cynthia Dye. In has taken over ten years, from the birth of the idea to finally opening the facility, years when the problems seemed insurmountable, but which have all been overcome to marvellous effect. Set the task of building a course with the minimum disruption to the terrain, and with bio concepts to the fore, renowned American golf course architect Cynthia Dye has provided a unique world class links golf course for all to savour. The result is a course which will challenge golfers of every standard. There are five sets of tees, and the most important decision will be to make the correct choice in order to make the experience an enjoyable one, rather than a painful examination, as there are some very difficult holes, and punishment for wayward shots. From the tiger tees it measures over 7000 yards, and with the collection of naturally bunkering it will be the ultimate test. Cynthia Dye has brought all her years of experience, gained in both the USA and the Far East to bear in creating the golf course. With exposure gained from many years

working for her uncle, Pete Dye, the doyen of American architects, famed for the challenges of his golf designs, facets of which are evident at West Cliffs to those who know the ethos of his designs. Having said that, this creation, her first in Portugal, is definitely unique and the perfect fit into the landscape, which offers scenery that is simply impossible to ignore. Her enthusiasm and passion for the course she

Designed by top Portuguese architects Sua Kay, and furnished by Filosfia do Espaco, it provides the perfect combination with the spectacular golf course. The resort will be managed by Marriot Praia Del Rey, which offers a choice of three different types of accommodation, a stay at the excellent five star hotel, at one of the houses in the Village, or one of the Beachfront apartments located just 100 metres from the waters edge and with breath-taking views of the golf course and the ocean. A first class golfing experience, with every element set to meet the very highest standards, a location that will prove to be a destination high on the priority list for the travelling golfer from all over Europe, and with the right publicity, even from the USA. My one tiny regret is that the name, which seems to fail to do justice to the magnificent setting, could not have been “Falesia del Rey”, an idea that was muted, but not finally chosen. For me, the translation of The Cliffs of the King carries a majesty that the course truly deserves, that touch of Regal Gold on the Silver Coast.

Death of champion Roberto, 94 Killer Former Open champion Roberto de Vicenzo has died at the age of 94.

The Argentine won the Claret Jug in 1967 at Royal Liverpool in Hoylake aged 44 to become the second oldest winner after Tom Morris, who was 46 in 1867.

He was preparing to take on Goalby when it emerged playing partner Tommy Aaron had inadvertently marked down a four on his card at the 17th when De Vicenzo had actually made a birdie three. De Vicenzo failed to notice the mistake when he submitted his scorecard to officials so the higher score stood.

But he is perhaps best known for the scorecard error that cost him victory at the Masters the following year. De Vicenzo had just carded 65 to force a play-off against

A Golfer died after he was struck by lightning on a Suffolk course. Philip Shard, 60, died in hospital after being struck while playing at Fynn Valley Golf Club, Witnesham. He was married and lived in Rushmere, near Ipswich. East of England Ambulance Service said Mr Shard was in cardiac arrest when their crew arrived: ‘He was resuscitated and taken to Ipswich Hospital in a critical condition. Mind you, nobody’s likely to starve on the island as there are a surprisingly good choice of local eateries, including an excellent Thai restaurant, with a reputation for cocktails.

The light south westerly breeze kept the players guessing and with the greens running at 10.5 on the Stimpmeter the pressure was on from the start. The wind dropped a little for the afternoon round and this was reflected in the better scores.

But the course once again proved a stern test for even the best who were fulsome in their praise of the presentation of the golf course so early in the year. Those from the north, as well as few from closer to home, had not seen such perfect greens all winter! Lauren Hillier from Newport Gwent playing off +2 set the early pace with a morning round of 72 with six others all playing par 74 or better.

West Byfleet (73,75) and Sharna Dutrieux from Wrotham Heath (78,71) both on total 149. These two had also featured among the prizes in 2016.

However, come the afternoon, professional Sophie Walker from Lancashire and winner of the event in 2009, pulled away and added a 69 (a gold cup course record) to her morning 74 to win the handsome trophy. Total for 36 holes – 143.

Lauren Hillier had to settle for the best morning round and Kerry Smith from Waterlooville the best afternoon round with a score of 73.Sophie Mills, playing off 2, from John O’Gaunt Golf Club had a hole in one at the 14th which brightened up her morning round of 85 and inspired her to a 77 in the afternoon.

Second was amateur Amelia Jane Williamson from Royal Cromer on 146 (73,73). Third, amateur Gemma Allman from Stanmore on 147 (73,74). In fourth place was the 2016 winner, professional Alex Peters from Shifnal, on 148 (77,71).

This event is now coupled with the Hampshire Rose taking place at North Hants Golf Club on April 9th. Those competitors who compete in the 72 hole Gold Rose will be eligible for World Amateur Golf Ranking Points.

The Golf Trust continues remarkable rise with UK Charity Commission registration The remarkable rise of The Golf Trust continues, with the news that the charity has achieved official registration with the Charity Commission. The Golf Trust (charity no. 1172134) was established in 2012 at The Shire London Golf Club by Cae Menai-Davis and Frank Harrington to promote inclusivity in golf, and to break down traditional barriers to participation such as socioeconomic status, physical or mental ability, and location. It first made news in October 2012 when it united multiple organisations for a disabled golf demonstration event at The Shire London. Since then, The Golf Trust has been demonstrating the power of well-delivered community golf initiatives in a range of activities which have taken golf’s message into many uncharted areas. Extraordinary growth over the last five years has so far seen The Golf Trust engage with over 200,000 people – almost all complete newcomers to the sport – for a minimum of four hours’ golf coaching both in the UK and in Grenada, where it works with the Jason Roberts Foundation.

Other notable landmarks in the charity’s short life so far have seen over 40,000 9-13 year old British schoolgirls competing in its 2016 Golf’s Golf Talent event, over 50,000 disabled individuals being given at least four hours of golf lessons each, and the training of over 250 golf coaches to deliver The Golf Trust outreach programmes in schools and community groups. Talking about The Golf Trust’s new registered charity status, Cae Menai-Davis said: “We’ve worked hard for five years to achieve this, but the work is worth it when you see the outcome.

“We are about much more than golf” he said. “In a way, golf skills are the secondary outcome. We see people feeling better about themselves, forming new connections, and getting active again. These are great outcomes – the ones we most look for, in fact.” The Golf Trust coaches are taught that luxury branded golf gear and sponsored executive cars are better left at home while working in the community. “To gain someone’s trust, the golf coach has to be relatable to the participant. The sport can come across as arrogant and privileged, which is the opposite of The Golf Trust way of doing things.” He continued: “We often deliver golf where you can’t see it. Golf doesn’t need to happen on a golf course, although we’ve created a non-intimidating pathway for newcomers to visit a traditional golf club should they wish to.” In 2016 The Golf Trust won the England Golf Innovation Award for the huge impact created by Golf’s Got Talent, and in 2017 the charity continues to diversify with new initiatives which include the UK launch of the Els For Autism scheme, a Strength In Mind mental awareness programme with golf at its heart, and a pilot project with the NHS mental health unit at Park Royal Hospital involving both wardens and inmates in golf. The Golf Trust UK Disabled Open, which returns on 24th July 2017 with Barclays as the new title sponsor, has become the country’s largest annual pan-disability golf

event, attracting competitors from Special Olympics GB, the Disabled Golf Association, the Blind Golf Association, the English Deaf Golf Association, HandiGolf and other specialist associations. Despite its London roots, The Golf Trust has run golf projects in many UK areas including Liverpool, Wales, Cornwall and Birmingham, and is in talks to bring its methods to Scotland.

Further afield, the charity is planning Golf Trust projects in Uganda and Indonesia, with approaches from many more places around the world coming in on a regular basis. “In a world where segregation continues to be a problem, golf can bring people together” said Menai-Davis. “It can be a force for good, and on a much larger scale than you would ever think possible – as long as you are prepared to step away, on occasion, from the slightly closed world of the traditional golf club.”

Wall is solid at Andy returns Hayling Pro-Am to take the top Ferndown spot Tournerbury Golf Centre’s Ben Wall kicked off the 2017 PGA South Pro-Am season by shooting one of the best rounds of his PGA career, a seven-under-par 64, to win the popular Hayling Pro-Am.

Proving that traditional links golf is a powerful attraction for lots of golfers, no fewer than 49 teams of four competed over Hayling’s immaculately prepared, firm and fast links, accompanied as usual by a typically stiff breeze.

Claiming the individual title and the winner’s cheque for £1,150, Wall edged out two former Order of Merit champions, pushing the bogey free six-under-par, 65 of Canterbury’s Richard Wallis into second spot, and the 66s of the two lefties – James Ablett (Lee-on-the-Solent) and ’s Chris Gane (Left Handed Golf at Silvermere) into a tie for third. Wall’s delight at winning was clear, as he explained: ‘I’ve just completed my first year as a PGA Assistant at Tournerbury, and it’s my first regional win, so I’m very pleased about that. I’m getting some guidance from one of the PGA South’s 2016 Coach of the Year, Kevin Flynn, the Tournerbury’s PGA Head Professional, and it all came together today.’ Things could have been very different if Gane could have maintained his run of form through the first 11 holes. Starting with a deuce at the opening hole and adding another at the fifth, Gane was already sixunder at the turn and promptly made a third two at the 11th to reach seven-under. Yet with seven birdie opportunities remaining, things cooled down for Gane with no more birdies and dropped shots at the 12th and 17th for his 66. In the team event though, even Wall’s supreme effort for his team still left them six off the mark, with Purley Downs’ Kevin O’Connell leading his team of amateurs to the top of the team leaderboard.

Wall was a member at Hayling for 11 years so his 64 wasn’t entirely a surprise, as he said: ‘I’ve shot lower rounds in roll ups and the like, but this is my best score at Hayling in a proper tournament. Rain overnight softened the greens a bit, which helped, but it was still firm and fast, and there was a two to three club wind to deal with as well.’ He continued: “Dropping the one shot on the 17th when my drive was gathered into a bunker spoiled an otherwise pretty good card, and I still had to wait three hours to find out if I’d won, as Richard Wallis was one of the last players to finish. ‘It was a super day, very well run and very well supported, so although it was a long day, it was well worth the wait in all sorts of ways!’

Knighton Heath club professional Andy Windsor returned to his previous club Ferndown to claim top place in the annual Invitational Pro-am that attracted 45 teams to an immaculate course on a sweltering summer day. The Knighton Heath club professional and his Silver Lady team of Steve Drewitt, Mark Dancer and Miles Delahunty came home late with a winning score of 14-under-par 128 in the team-only event operating with a two-tee start. Their back nine of 66 was enough to relegate long-time leaders Parkstone Birdies to second place because of the three-shot difference on countback. Parkstone’s long-serving professional James Baldwin led Annie Penfold, Jill Farthing and Ange Talbert.

The final prize went to Mark Wiggett (Dudsbury) who headed the Hooks and Slices trio of Andy Lear, Jem Fearon and Mike Barron into third on 129. Dominic Knight (Remedy Oak) and his Sea Leggs team were fourth one shot behind while James Hannam (Bath) and the A J Removals team were fifth on 130. Playing for fun, Roger runs close Roger Tuddenham admitted it was ‘total and utter’ surprise to find himself in contention for the Silversea Senior PGA Professional Championship at Foxhills, writes Ken Gaunt. The PGA in Hampshire secretary, pictured right, clawed his way up up the leaderboard on the final day to force a play-off with Fraser Mann (Carnoustie Links) and Paul Streeter (Lincoln Golf Centre). All three notched an even par total of 218 with Tuddenham finishing with a splendid three-under-par 70 after an opening 75

followed by a 73. Tuddenham, however, bogeyed the first play-off hole to drop out of contention as Mann went on to claim top spot for the second time in three years. The consolation for the popular secretary of The PGA in Hampshire was nearly £4,000 in prize money.

Tuddenham said: ‘I am elated as I only play for fun these days. I thought it was going to be a long week when I was three over after six holes in the first round and it was raining heavily. But I started growing in confidence and halfway through the tournament I thought I would just go for it. It almost paid off.’

“Drive for show and Putt for Dough” is a saying most golfers know but this is all very well if your tee shots are consistent. To make the most of the ground firming up now is the time to asses your driving skills and try to squeeze a bit more power out by using the following tricks: Set-Up Check List When teeing off you need to be aware that the set-up is different to when using an iron. Firstly make sure the ball is teed up at the correct height for your driver. You should be able to see half the ball above the top of the club. The ball position needs to be opposite the inside of your left or front heel. You then need to feel like you are almost on a slight up hill slope (a launch pad to launch your drive from) This will settle a fraction more weight back onto your right (or back foot) –about 60%. Relax and don’t strangle the club, remain as calm as possible. Swing away low and slow; The first part of the swing shouldn’t be picked up steep or snatched away from the ball rapidly, but stretched wide to create the width required to send the ball soaring. The general reaction to having a driver in your hand is to think “Aha, this has to go further than all my other clubs so I will hit it as hard and swing it as fast as I can!!”. This is unfortunately our human instinct creeping in, it usually ends in disaster. So take a deep breath and remember the driver is designed by those clever driver designing people to go further for you. So keep the swing smooth and rhythmical rather than trying to beat the ball into the next millennium.

Just A Thought Visualise where you would like your ball to go, remember a good tee shot you have hit in the past (and try not to let the bad ones creep into your memory). See the shot, rehearse the shot (by doing practice swings) and committ to hitting the shot. Not everyone feels they get on with drivers, some are under the impression they have an allergy to such clubs! Modern technology has moved on so much since many of us started playing golf. This means drivers these days are seriously on your side. Why not have a go with a few of the new models coming out. You’ll be surprised how well you hit them. Driving the ball well is also a confidence thing. Remember that you need to train your brain as well as your swing to hit good shots. Commit to a full flowing follow through. So many people cut their swings short once the ball has been hit. Don’t be tempted to do this stretch the club through just as you would have done if you were taking a practice swing. Focus on your finsh. Let the ball get in the way.

It may interest you to know that it is a common strategy for training youngsters in course management to have them play a round of golf with no pins in the holes! The surprising thing is that, almost without exception, the scoring is better when the pins are out than when they play the same course with the pins in. That almost doesn’t make sense does it - but it does when you realise that golf is a game of misses. I often find that when golfers are selecting a club for a shot, they make their selection based on the assumption that they are going to hit the ball perfectly well. This is an assumption that is, in certain situations, a potential disaster. Let’s say, for example, that your best shot with an 8 iron pitches 130 yards and your worst travels 122 through the air. This means that your average 8 iron flies 126 yards. Now imagine you are faced with a shot of 130 to a pin that is four yards over a bunker. You think, great, that’s a perfect yardage for my 8 iron. So you go with the eight but, unfortunately, you hit a slightly below average shot and finish in the bunker. The same shot aimed at the middle of the green would have been good! The key to good scoring is to go with your average shot and steer away from potential disasters. Golf history is littered with stories of Championships thrown away by hitting the wrong shot or by poor judgement. The one that stands out in my mind was the unfortunate story of Jean Van de Velde. He stood on the last tee of the 1999 Open Championship at

Carnoustie with a three shot lead. On the 487 yard par 4, Van de Velde took out his driver, (on the three previous rounds he had had two birdies and a par on the hole). A wayward drive went over the burn on the right of the fairway, but found land. Rather than chip back onto the fairway and play to the green with his third shot, he went for the green with a two iron. His shot hit the greenside grandstand and rocketed off into thick rough. From there a cocktail of disasters meant that he wound up with a seven. He ended up in a play-off which he lost to Paul Lawrie. Of course, any wrong decision you might make would pale into insignificance compared to this one. Why did he go for the risky two iron when he could have played a pitch down the fairway and a short iron to the green? Only Jean knows that one!! The picture is of Jean on the eighteenth hole contemplating whether to play out of the burn. The lesson to be learned is that if you are in the rough, get back into play. You have to accept that you will probably drop a shot. Having made that decision you will be a lot more composed when you come to play the next shot. Who knows, you may hole a putt and make a par or nett par, but you will avoid the big number.
