Johnson is new U.S. Champion amid controversy
Another Major rules fiasco after a review at the end of his round. The episode led to total confusion for players and fans, especially when Lowry birdied the 12th to reach four under and nobody knew whether he was level with, or one behind, Johnson.
GOLF’S ability to get itself into a very public tangle over the rules marred a U.S. Open fourth round which saw Dustin Johnson emerge as 2016 champion. Drama and farce prevailed as Ireland’s Shane Lowry let a four-shot lead slip to let Johnson win his first Major. Controversy revolved around whether Johnson’s ball moved on the fifth green and he should be penalised a stroke. Officials spoke to the player on the 12th tee, but it was not until after Johnson completed his round that the penalty was imposed. The American had been standing over his ball and made two practice putts. As he prepared to address the ball to make his putting swing, his ball moved slightly.
Johnson stepped away saying that he had not addressed the ball – which would have incurred a one-shot penalty. Johnson checked with an official who said there had been no infringement, but another official approached Johnson at the 12th to warn him that a penalty might be imposed
HAMPSHIRE’S SCOTT IS AMATEUR CHAMP HAMPSHIRE’S Scott Gregory came out on top in a closely fought final of the 121st Amateur Championship at Royal Porthcawl. The 21-year-old from Corhampton held off a strong challenge from Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre to seal a 2&1 victory in the 36-hole match. The England A international secured a place in The 145th Open at Royal Troon, next year’s U.S. Open at Erin Hills and, by tradition, an invitation to the Masters Tournament in 2017. Scott said: ‘Obviously it’s a dream come true, you dream about moments like this when you are practising all those hours.’

Their decisions had meant Johnson playing a third of his round with ‘crap’ in his head. McIlroy added that he himself ‘wouldn’t hit another shot until the farce was rectified’. World number two Jordan Spieth called it ‘a joke’. In the end, the penalty stroke did not affect the outcome because Johnson still won by three from Lowry, whose round imploded after a run of three bogeys.

IAN Poulter, ruled out of Europe’s Ryder Cup team with injury, has been named one of the continent’s vice-captains for the September event in Minnesota Poulter, 40, announced he will be out of playing action for four months with arthritis in his right foot, and was almost immediately asked by skipper Darren Clarke to join his backroom team. Clarke had already named Thomas Bjorn, Paul Lawrie and Padraig Harrington as vice-captains. Poulter, a fiery and competitive Ryder play in the last five cups as he took 14 points from 18 matches and became the teams’ passionate talisman, said he was ‘truly honoured’.
He added: ‘Everyone who knows me knows how much the Ryder Cup means. The best moments of my career have come when I have been wearing the blue and gold crest of Europe on my chest, knowing at the same time that the contest means so much to every player and fan.
‘We have a tremendous record in the Ryder Cup in recent times, having played with passion, desire and commitment. I will do everything in my power to maintain that intensity.’ This year's Ryder Cup takes place at Hazeltine National from September 30 to October 2.
Support growing for golf ‘Twenty20’ SOCCER galactico Gareth Bale has joined the growing band of fans of Twenty20style golf which is offering a speedier version of the sport and attracting more people onto the fairways. The Real Madrid and Wales winger joins a growing movement promoting formats that make the game shorter to play and removing the concept that a round of golf has to take up to five hours and effectively the whole day. The hope is that golf at all levels will benefit from its own equivalent of Twenty20 cricket, with amateurs enjoying perhaps just an afternoon or evening on a quicker version of the game, and professionals competing in made-for-TV contests to boost the sport’s popularity. A new format played over six holes, with players golfers are allowed only 30 seconds to execute shots, has been launched and Bale alerted his 17.3 million Instagram followers to SPRINT6GOLF, which has also been endorsed by the European Tour.
Players can download a smartphone app which explains the rules and provides a stopwatch. If you take too long you receive a yellow card. A second lapse leads to a oneshot penalty. SPRINT6GOLF founder Tom Critchley told BBC Sport: ‘Can you play golf in an hour? Yes, you can. Very simply, it is six holes on a 30-second shot-clock. The moment you put your bag down the clock starts and people get on with it.’
SERGIO MATCHES SEVE SERGIO Garcia has matched the record of his hero Seve Ballesteros' Spanish record haul of nine PGA Tour wins with a play-off victory at the AT&T Byron Nelson tournament in Texas. Garcia twice hit his ball into water hazards but still posted a two-under-par 68 to match overnight leader Brooks Koepka, who shot 71, on 15 under. Garcia then won at the first extra hole after Koepka also drove into water. ‘I won a bit like Seve,’ he said after a win that helped put him into contention for a place in Europe's Ryder Cup team. Garcia is himself a veteran of seven European teams, five of them victorious.

BRISTOLIAN Chris Wood propelled himself into contention for a place in the European Ryder Cup team and the Rio Olympics with the third and biggest win of his career in the BMW PGA at Wentworth. Wood, 28, started the final day three behind and covered the front nine in 29, which shot him into a four-shot lead – and then put on the blinkers to avoid watching the scoreboard as he went through a shaky finish. He hung on for a one-stroke victory over Rikard Karlberg, who hit a lovely 65 which included a hole in one. Wood said: ‘It is the biggest win of my career, I have always wanted to win the tournament and to win with my family here is amazing.’ Masters champion Danny Willett slipped off the lead to finish third as a jittery 76 left him two shots behind Wood.
‘I have worked really hard with my former coach,’ Wood told Sky Sports. ‘He has helped me a lot with my scoring and my pitching, it has been a huge factor missing in my game. I have a great team of people helping me now. I can't fault a shot that I hit today. When you are making lots of birdies on a tricky day, you know you are going to be there or thereabouts.’

HOLDING aloft the trophy almost bigger than herself, Canadian Brooke Henderson is all smiles after claiming her first win in a Major, beating world number one Lydia Ko in a play-off at the PGA Championship in Seattle. The 18-year-old rattled in two long putts in the final holes to card 65 and tie with Ko. Henderson then held her nerve to sink a three-foot putt at the first extra hole to win the £370,000 first prize.

STOKE PARK It has been a number of years since my last visit to Stoke Park, but the return proved to be most enjoyable. As soon as you leave the road from Beaconsfield and turn into the resort, you cannot fail to be impressed by the striking Michael Rees location, an old country estate that is steeped in history, which becomes more self-evident as you approach. The magnificent Palladian Mansion house is the main building, with surrounding gardens by Capability Brown, and encompassed by the three marvellous golf courses designed by Harry S Colt. It is complemented by the Pavillion, which houses some of the accommodation, and the spa and gymnasium. This is far more than a golf complex, it is a five star country club set in the 350 acre estate, the landscape and the monuments reinforce the aura of significant history. It is a place to be enjoyed in luxury. It has all the facilities that you could wish for. In addition to twenty seven holes of superb golf, dating from 1908, and which has been superbly refurbished in recent months. The three nines are named, Colt, Alison and Lane Jackson. In addition it has indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a state of the art four thousand square foot fitness centre and gymnasium, and a Health and Beauty Spa of the highest quality. The purpose of the visit was to attend a lunch to celebrate the re-opening of the Colt course.and to play the nine hole course following the major upgrading, recently completed. A project that has proved to be a wonderful and successful venture, with bunker restoration and refurbishment during the winter months. Although the history of Stoke Park stretches back over nine hundred years, the fundamental change in use came in 1908, until that time it had been a private residence. The new owner was Nick “Pa” Lane Jackson, who was a renowned sportsman and a member of the Corinthian Club. He had visited America and seen the concept of the country club for the first time, and returned home determined to create the first one in England, which he did so very successfully. Bernard Darwin, the doyen of golf writers sang the praises of the location in his famous book “The Golf Courses of the British Isles”, written in 1910.
The Park is no stranger to celebrity events, for it plays host to the Boodles Tennis Tournament every year, the best players in the world have graced the fine grass courts, in the past Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, David Nalbadian and more recently Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal our own star Andy Murray have been regular visitors. It is not surprising that such a wonderful setting has also proved popular with film makers. Two James Bond movies have been filmed here, and just about every film buff will remember the famous golf match between Bond and Goldfinger, and the concluding beheading of the statue by Oddjob. That was in 1964, more recently in 2004 three films were made here, Wimbledon, Bride & Prejudice and Layer Cake, the dramatic ending with Daniel Craig and Sienna Miller was filmed on the clubhouse steps. Without doubt the golf courses take pride of place in the popularity stakes, many tournaments have been held here, featuring some of the greatest names in the game, Seve Ballesteros, Tony Jacklin, Nick Faldo, all Open Champions who have enjoyed golf at Stoke Park. There are three distinct loops of nine holes, each having very distinct characteristics, and

holes to remember. We played the Colt and Alison combination on the day of our visit. There are many classic holes on this Colt loop of nine holes, the third is typical of the maestro architect, with echelon bunkering and an elevated green, and the seventh, the second of the par threes has a long narrow angled green protected by the lakes in front and along the right side. Alison was Colt’s partner, and a wonderful architect in his own right, the second nine bearing his name also boasts challenging short holes, the 11th, with water defending. There are several long and testing par four’s, with water in play on the 16th and 17th, and a tough finishing hole back to the mansion. Take the trouble to visit the locker rooms and see the marvellous golf trophy The Colt Cup, played for by the clubs with courses designed by the famous man. The other nine holes, aptly called the Lane Jackson, were lost for over fifty years, used as agricultural land for the war effort, but subsequently recovered. They are a real delight, not overly long, but played around a huge lake, and with the magnificent house visible from every hole. Twenty seven holes of golfing delight. After the stresses of the golf, you can retire to the spa and indulge in the sheer luxury and delight of a massage treatment It is a first class facility, with excellent staff offering
the full range of treatments, sufficient to satisfy the most discerning guest. The final touches are added by the elegant bedroom accommodation, part of which is housed in the Pavillion, the rooms are individually designed with fine art, antiques and en suite marble bathrooms, the total effect is absolutely sumptuous. Residents have full use of all the facilities at Stoke Park There are three contrasting restaurants, though there is one constant, the excellent quality of the food, and The Dining Room proved to be a marvellous setting for the dinner we enjoyed. For quality traditional dining there is Humphry’s Fine Dining, a very apt name, under the Head Chef Chris Wheeler, San Marco is a classic Italian in a more relaxed mode, and the Orangery, where the afternoon teas are to dream about. If you would like to chase away those economic blues or recover from the pressure of making a Brexit decision, and the pocket has not been too severely damaged, this is the perfect place to come to be pampered, delighted by the sporting fayre, and extremely well fed and watered. STAR LIZ INSPIRES THE HAMPSHIRE YOUNG ONES GOLF star Liz Young has introduced golf to the pupils of her former school in Hampshire in response to England Golf’s ‘Get into golf’ campaign.

‘It was fantastic,’ said Liz, whose long-term aim is to get golf on the curriculum. ‘Then we got them hitting golf shots and they just loved it when they got the ball up in the air. The smile on their faces said: “Wow! I can do it”.’
Liz, who is attached to Brokenhurst Manor Golf Club, was England’s top woman player in her amateur days and is now a leading player on the Ladies European Tour where she is currently 20th on the Order of Merit.
Colin, who is the professional at the nearby Walhampton Golf Club, introduced the youngsters to the game, while Liz impressed them with a long driving display.
She teamed up with PGA professional Colin Murray to host a special day of masterclasses for 240 pupils, aged 6-13, at Walhampton School in Lymington, Hampshire.
Now all the youngsters are being offered two free Saturday lessons in Murray’s junior groups and they have the opportunity to learn with him in school on Thursdays.
Nine-hole golf goes national

The launch follows a successful eight-month trial in Staffordshire when over 4,600 9-hole rounds were played. Now clubs across the country are invited to join the campaign and promote 9-hole green fees and offers to players on the GolfExpress9.org website.
Ross enjoys ‘crazy golf’ ROSS Langdon called it crazy golf, but it was certainly profitable as he completed the three most exciting and profitable days of his golfing life by shooting a careerlow nine-under-par 62 to win the Minchinhampton Old course proam against a quality field.‘It was a crazy round of golf,’ said the 28year-old professional from Matson who moved from South Cerney to coach at Brickhampton Court three months ago. The former Gloucestershire county colleague of the new PGA champion, Bristol’s Chris Wood, added: ‘I made birdies everywhere and everything I tried worked a treat. This is the best run I have experienced as a pro.’ The previous day he finished tied second in the PGA Professional Championship qualifier at Burnham and Berrow. This followed the Gloucester and Somerset PGA Championship at Mendip Spring where he clinched the Order of Merit after seven wins during the winter season. Ten birdies, one dropped shot on the seventh and halves of 32 and 30 brought an early clubhouse lead that was never likely to be threatened.

We all have to start SOMEWHERE!
Three members of this month's winning GB&I Curtis Cup team will represent England in the European Ladies’ Team Championship in Iceland next month. Alice Hewson, Bronte Law and Meghan MacLaren will be joined by Emma Allen, Lizzie Prior and Olivia Winning. The championship will be played at Oddur Golf Club, Iceland, from 5-9 July. The European Girls’ Team Championship will be played simultaneously at Oslo Golf Club, Norway, and the team is Louisa Brunt, Sharna Dutrieux, Lily May Humphreys, Emily Price, Isobel Wardle and Amelia Williamson. All six are new caps at this level. WOMEN’S TEAM: Emma Allen, 19, (Meon Valley, Hampshire) had four top ten finishes in her freshman year at the University of Missouri. Last season she won the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters, was runner-up in the English girls’ championship and third on the England Golf Girl’s Order of Merit. She was in England’s successful team at the girls’ Home Internationals, winning all six of her games.
We all started as beginners at some point although, for some of us, it may have been a few years ago. I remember in my early days of golf, most of my shots were either thinned, air shots or spent digging new ditches on the course. At the time, it seemed the harder I tried, the worse I played and just managing to hit the ball in the air and in the right direction, was quite an achievement. Like many beginners, I was perplexed why I wasn’t more consistent. I could play a few holes really well and then all of a sudden I’d lose the plot and found myself struggling to hit the ball. I’ve since come to realise this aspect doesn’t change over the years and I can still have a cracking round one day, only to find a couple of days later I’m standing over the ball, wondering where on earth it’s going to end up. With so many do’s and don’ts in the game, from what to wear, where to stand or when it’s your turn, it’s a minefield for a beginner. On top of that, newbies have to learn all about the weird and wonderful formats we play, as well as actually learning the craft of golf and achieving a decent score. Perhaps they should call it a golf apprenticeship rather than a beginner programme!
It makes you wonder how beginners ever survive as its quite surprising the golfing knowledge we automatically store away and take for granted, something I recently appreciated when a beginner was given a magnetic hat clip but later politely asked what it was for. I’ve always thought of a golf Professional needing the patience of a saint to constantly watch so many hackers, thinners, slicers and lobbers desperately trying to hit a straight ball over a reasonable distance. However, in reality it’s very rewarding to watch a beginner improve as the weeks go by. Even competent sports people who take up golf can struggle to play the game. After all, to an on-looker it must appear complete madness to have created a game where the challenge is to hit a 41mm ball less than 72 times with a small club-head over 5 miles, popping it down 18 small holes along the way, regardless of the weather or ground conditions. No wonder most golfers don’t break 100!

Alice Hewson, 18, (Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire) made her Curtis Cup team debut in the winning team at Dun Laoghaire earlier this month. Last year she was individually second in qualifying at the European team championship and was in England’s winning teams at the girls’ and women’s Home Internationals and the European Young Masters. She has won twice since starting at Clemson University in South Carolina last year. Bronte Law, 21, (Bramhall, Cheshire) is the world number four and won all five of her matches in the Curtis Cup, becoming only the second player to achieve the feat. She is a student at the University of California, Los Angeles, and has just won the Annika Award as the top female US collegiate golfer, having already been named as the PING Player of the Year by the Women’s Golf Coaches Association. She has been English women’s amateur champion for the past two years. Meghan MacLaren, 22, (Wellingborough, Northamptonshire) scored the winning point for GB&I at the Curtis Cup. She is a past British and Irish stroke play champion and has won eight times on the US college circuit where she is a student at the Florida International University. She represented Europe in this season’s inaugural Patsy Hankins Trophy against Asia Pacific. Lizzie Prior, 18, (Burhill, Surrey) won her first event after starting university in the USA and returned to successfully defend the Critchley Salver at Sunningdale. She won the England Golf Girls' Order of Merit for 2015

after winning the girls’ title at the Fairhaven Trophies and finishing runner-up three times, in the English girls’ championship, the Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters and the English women’s amateur. Olivia Winning, 21, (Rotherham, Yorkshire) won the Helen Holm Scottish open stroke play championship for the second time this year and tied 12th in an LET Access Series tournament in Spain in May. GIRLS’ TEAM Louisa Brunt, 17, (Royal Birkdale, Lancashire) had top 20 finishes in the German girls’ open. Sharna Dutrieux, 17, (Wrotham Heath, Kent) tied second in the Critchley Salver, was third in the Hampshire Rose and was leading amateur in the Roehampton Gold Cup where she was fourth overall. Lily May Humphreys, 14, (Channels, Essex) is the English U14 girls’ champion. This season her results include winning the Fairhaven Trophies, taking fourth place in the recent WPGA one-day event at Little Aston, finishing runner-up at the Critchley Salver and third in the Frilford Heath Salver. Emily Price, 16, (Cleobury Mortimer, Worcestershire) currently leads the England Golf Girls’ Order of Merit after a spectacular run of three wins in a week before taking a break for exams. She won the Scottish open girls’ championship, the Leveret and the Whittington Ladies’ Trophy. Bel Wardle, 16, (Prestbury, Cheshire) was eighth in the St Rule Trophy, 16th in the Welsh women’s stroke play and made the cut in the Portuguese women’s amateur championship. Amelia Williamson, 15, (Royal Cromer, Norfolk) was runner-up in the Fairhaven Trophies, third in the Scottish girls’ champion-ship and 12th in the German girls’ open.

ales is a country of wonderful scenery, mountains, moorlands, valleys and rivers, populated by numerous castles and monuments and home to a variety of diverse and quality golf courses. Many came to the attention of the golfing public as a consequence of the 2010 Ryder Cup played at Celtic Manor; the dramatic manner of the European victory certainly assisted that. Most keen golfers will already have been aware of the great Welsh venues, Royal St Davids, Royal Porthcawl and the classic links courses along the South Coast, but Mid Wales has treasures of its own.

Anyone with an interest in golf history or literature will be aware of Aberdovey, a golfing shrine and the beloved course of Bernard Darwin, the doyen of golf writers in the 20th Century, but throughout the vast region there other delights running along under the radar. Machynlleth Golf Club is certainly one of those, and for those with a liking for natural golf courses, the club is a sure-fire success. The course is set out on a landscape constructed by Mother Nature, and refined by the inspiration and talent of none other than James Braid, five times Open Champion. Braid was very prolific designing the links of Wales; he has ten courses in the North which have aligned to form the James Braid Trail. A challenge which is well worth taking. Golf was being played on Park Common, the location of the course, many years before any formal structure existed; it was the site of numerous other sporting events in the 1800â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. A gallery of over one thousand spectators watched the National Sheep Dog Trials in 1877; a vast throng when considering the difficulty of travel at that time, and the newspaper Cambrian News reported golf on the common in 1892.
HERITAGE GOLF IN WALES MACHYNLLETH GOLF CLUB A BRAID BEAUTY One of the principal motivators for the formation of the golf club was Dr Alfred Davies, a young doctor who had moved the area to succeed his brother as the GP. He was already a famous sportsman; he was the proud owner of nine caps for Wales at football between 1885 and 1890. Such presence and backing is often all that it needs to make things happen, and so it proved to be. The club was eventually formed in 1904, and the first officials appointed, Lord Henry Vine-Tempest to be President, the Treasurer was the local bank manager, and Dr Davies was to be on the management committee. The Club went from strength to strength, and in 1909 Open Champion J H Taylor was invited to stay for a week and play exhibition matches. It would be hard to imagine a rural club inviting a multiple major champion to stay for a week in this day and age. A new pavilion was opened in 1909, and Open Champions J H Taylor and Harry Vardon played exhibition matches. Taylor was invited back a year later, and this time his companion was James Braid, so in the space of one year the Great Triumvirate of Golf had all played on Park Common. In common with many others the club suffered a setback due to the First World War, but the Second World War

conflict was even more catastrophic. The course returned to nature and after the war ended the club was not reconstituted. After several years moves were afoot to reestablish a golf club on Park Common, and in June 1965 the club was re-opened after twenty years in the wilderness. It was still plagued by the Territorial Army, which continued to use the rifle ranges, but the club eventually purchased the land and the future secured. All that is in the past, and our visit was to expose a very different set of playing conditions to the manicured courses we see so often today. It has many similarities to those in the New Forest, but in this case the greenkeepers assistants are sheep and not ponies. A simple precis would state, a 90 degree dogleg to start, a straightway finishing hole, interspersed with one par 5, three long fours and three tough par threes, two of which are over 200 yards long. The 7th is the best hole in my view, justly rated stroke index one, but the signature hole is probably the 8th, from an elevated tee at the highest point on the course, to a green way below. A fascinating and enjoyable challenge. If you are looking for manicured fairways and a pristine environment, this is not for you, but if rugged natural beauty, with challenging holes, and a warm welcome fits your criteria, this is one for your must play list. Returning golfers provide a good test about a golf club, and this one passed with flying colours. This is a club and course which more than justifies a place in the Heritage of Golf In Wales series. Luis Mesquita and Kathy North managed a total of 359 yards for their combined drives with Stuart Webb closest to guessing the combined distance.
The Green Challenge was won by James Cross, Mick Beaumont, Matt Brakspear and Jonathan Clark. The Combined Drives competition and the Green Challenge raised a total of £228 for the Captains’ Charity.
Winners of the Drive-In competition were Jonathan Fleming, Stuart Webb, Phil Wise and Julie Casey with a score of 61.2. Runners-up were Anne Smith, Edward Houghton, Sue Parcell and Neil McAllister with 61.3.

After a fantastic week at Basingstoke Golf Club, Kerry Smith of Waterlooville walked away as this year’s County Champion. Kerry is now a four-time winner having won in 2002, 2003 and 2006 and in 2016 after a ten-year gap. Tammy Andrews and Julie Newbold
The final match between Kerry and Sarah Bradshaw from Stoneham was a great game and too close to call the whole way round. Sarah fought hard but a bad lie on the 18th proved to be the deciding factor as Kerry made her par and won the match 1 up.

In the Challenge Bowl, Sue Blundell of Meon Valley was looking to retain her title from last year when she went up against Sheila Purvis of Blackmoor.

Sue put the pressure on Sheila and managed to clinch the win 4&3 to retain the title for the 2nd consecutive year, the only time this has been achieved since 1937 and 1938.
VETS’ CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS 2016 Seventy-seven ladies from Hampshire and IOW gathered at Weybrook Park GC for the 2016 Veterans Championships including the Division 2 Meeting. Scores for the entire day proved it was tough going out there and playing long. In the Division 2 Stableford Competition the top score of 31 points was shared by winner Linda Fossey from Meon Valley and runner-up Anne Luetchford of Corhampton. In Division 1 Jane Bennett from Lee-onthe-Solent netted under par with a 72 but Sue Hitchen from Royal Winchester carded a 71 to take the 2016 title of Veterans’ Champion.

Wellow Golf Club Supports Seniors Marathon Charity Golf Session! On Monday 23rd May Wellow Golf Club Senior, Dave Coombes (76) completed 108 holes of golf, walked 33 miles, 557 strokes and raised approx. £2,330 in aid of two charities; Hospital of St Cross in Winchester and Hospital of St John in Jerusalem. Thanks go to Wellow GC management for assisting greatly in allowing this to happen plus of course the four `carers` who nursed him round just over 15.5 hrs., commencing at 4.20am. COTTRELL PARK HOST FIRST ROUND QUALIFIER OF THE WEE WONDERS COMPETITION Over 50 juniors age ranging from 5-12 years graced the fairways of 2015 Welsh club of the year Cottrell Park in the annual Wee Wonders competition on Saturday 30th April. This event was the first round of competition for theses juniors, some of which had travelled from Essex to play. After Cottrell Park the qualifiers would be held on to the Rhondda GC for the Regional qualifier. With the top three making their way to the home of golf to play the final at St Andrews. Despite the blustery conditions at Cottrell Park throughout the day all the juniors did extremely well. There were three sets of tees, for the differing age groups. The Ladies tees for older groups. A shortened course for the middle ages and a course from the 150 yard markers for the youngest. (5-6 year olds). Scores in the 30's were recorded just showing how talented some of these juniors are.

Drive2Drive Raising awareness for MS and the Disabled Golf Association
Amateur Champion Scott Gregory leads England’s Euro campaign
On Monday 30th May 2016 Graeme Robertson, who has primary progressive MS and cannot walk unaided across a room, was the first to complete the DRIVE2DRIVE challenge of 18 holes of golf at 18 different golf clubs. Not only did he do all the driving in his adapted car using hand controls, but Graeme managed to play in 3 counties as well - Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. Graeme Robertson, on completing the challenge said “I managed to play all 18 holes! I even got a par 3 at Sonning GC in front of Jonathon the Pro and just missed a par 4 at Goring and Streatley GC. Sue Robertson and Paul Piercy spearheaded the DRIVE2DRIVE campaign and Sue said “As well as fundraising to support TEAM ENGLAND and the organisation itself, we wanted to raise awareness that diagnosis of neurological conditions and brain injuries such as MS, Parkinson’s and those undergoing long rehabilitations such as stroke survivors, amputees does not mean the end of your life, sport is amazing for therapy and rehabilitation and improving health and social life. This challenge was never just about the golf - despite disability you can still do what you want to do.” Graeme continued “I was doing the challenge in Bucks/Berks/Oxon and Peter King has been doing the same in Kent and East Sussex. Special thanks to all the golf clubs – it was incredible to have support of the members and staff, as well as those playing in society matches at Bearwood Lakes, Royal Ascot, Goring & Streatley and Donnington Valley. It was a chilly windy early start and we didn’t see many golfers out too early but a warm welcome from my family on the 18th at East Berks which was a great surprise. Between Peter and myself and all our helpers so far we have raised an incredible £2,500. We are hoping to repeat the challenge in Surrey and in Yorkshire later in the year.” DGA is a pan-disability, not-for-profit organization, membership is free. About the Disabled Golf Association Our main aims are to promote the game of golf as a pathway to a healthier lifestyle and greater social inclusion for those who are disabled, irrespective of age, gender or disability. This includes providing the means to make it easier for the disabled player to access the facilities both on and off the course. We aim to provide information about equipment to permit that increased accessibility, this can be done by means of single-seater buggies specifically designed for the disabled player, bespoke club and prosthetic adaptation as well as supplying professional coaching at events from those who have been trained to teach the sport. We aim to attract not only those who have played in the past prior to an illness or injury,

We look to provide a playing environment where the clubs are disabled friendly and accessible and the courses are pre-vetted to ensure that they are capable of being played by those with limited mobility. We are helping to assist in the launching of coaching academies and training sessions throughout the UK. Also from our base in Berkshire we aim to provide information on courses, equipment and holiday resorts for the disabled golfer. We hope to offer all of these benefits for our members and others but also employment for those in the area who are disabled and can join us. All our members are kept aware of the activities of the association by a comprehensive web site and active facebook site, which attract new audiences on a daily basis. Scott Gregory, the new Amateur Champion, will lead the England men's campaign in the European Team Championship at Chantilly, France, from July 5-9. He will be joined in the team by Jamie Bower of Yorkshire, Adam Chapman of Cumbria, Bradley Moore of Derbyshire, Marco Penge of Sussex and Alfie Plant of Kent. The reserve is Ashton Turner of Lincolnshire. The team will be seeking their 12th win in this championship – and their fourth since the millennium, having triumphed in 2013, ’10 and ’05. The European Boys’ Team Championship will be played simultaneously at Diamond Country Club in Austria and the team will be: Toby Briggs of Norfolk, Callum Farr of Northamptonshire; John Gough of Berkshire; Matty Lamb of Northumberland; Daniel O’Loughlin of Nottinghamshire; and Charlie Strickland of Sussex. England has won the boys’ title on eight occasions, most recently in 2004.
Six club teams qualify for England Golf national final Six golf club teams from Berkshire, Hampshire and Buckinghamshire have played their way into the national final of an England Golf championship. They all won through a regional qualifier and will take part in the final of the English Club Team Championship on Monday, 8 August in the England Golf Week at Frilford Golf Club, Oxfordshire.

PENRHOS GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB ONE TO DISCOVER The publication Wales Golf issued annually by Visit Wales has been an invaluable reference book during my numerous golfing excursions to the Principality. It has been especially useful when seeking out and contacting the less well known venues which are available in this golfing mecca. Michael Rees Within a few miles of the renowned Aberdovey Golf Club, we identified firstly Machynlleth Golf Club and then Penrhos Golf & Country Club, two new venues for us to seek out. The Penrhos club is located in the village of Llanrhystud, just nine miles south of Aberystwyth. Penrhos Park is a privately family owned resort set in landscaped parkland and meadowland, with dramatic changes in elevation and spectacular panoramic views of Cardigan Bay. It has an eighteen hole championship course as well as a nine hole academy style layout, plus a floodlit driving range with state of the art teaching facilities and club fitting centre. There is a very well stocked Pro shop, with staff on hand to teach and advise both new and experienced golfers. The year 2016 will see the celebrations for the 25th Anniversary of the opening of the course, celebrations which will run through to 2017 and the 25th year since the official opening of the fine clubhouse. Penrhos is the name of the farm on which the course was built, and it is also the name of the Celtic fort which overlooks the course. Since the opening of the resort it has been developed extensively with many added features, today there is a complete leisure complex, with indoor swimming pool and training suite. The clubhouse has conference facilities, and in addition there are tennis courts and a bowling green, for those needing extra -curricular activities as an alternative or after the golf. For those wishing to stay at the resort, there is a fifteen bedroom hotel on site as well as luxury log cabins, to satisfy the most discerning golfers. The championship course proved to be a stern test, although not very long at 6,600 yards, the changes in elevation, sometimes very steep, plus the water hazards mean scoring is far from easy. In fact the course record is 71 (one under par) and has stood for several years. The first four holes are the toughest, climbing up the valley, particularly the 2nd hole which claims to be one of the roughest in Wales. The 13th is the highest point on the course, and the views over Cardigan Bay will
grab the attention. The 17th hole is the signature hole, and one that will certainly not be forgotten, a spectacular downhill par three of 169 yards, a huge drop to a receptive green, but any shot over-hit will find a watery grave in the pool beyond the green. It concludes with a first class finishing hole, a gentle dogleg with two pools to negotiate and a large two tiered green to complete the round. Despite a long wet winter, the course was in fine condition, a compliment to the work of the greens staff. This is an ideal holiday resort course, a challenge without penal rough or unnecessary complications, but one to be enjoyed. If you have energy left after the golf, or need variety for your visit, there is much to satisfy the visitor. For the nature lover there is the Osprey Centre at Machynlleth, there is red kite feeding station at Bwlch Nant Yr Arian near Aberystwyth. For those who enjoy the fasciation of steam locomotives, there are numerous locations within a short drive. The Talyllyn, The Vale of Reidol, the Snowdonia and the best of all, the Welsh Highland Heritage railway. Whether the natural world or steam is your golf alternative interest, the region can provide all you would wish for, and it is a walkerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s paradise. Mid Wales is a place that you can return to again and again, and still find new things to see and do..

Continuing the saga of a late-convert golfer’s search for glory on the greens. . . YOU probably won’t have seen the driver that belongs to ‘John Sly’. But – if you live anywhere between Tunbridge Wells and Dorchester you’ve almost certainly heard it. It makes a noise like… well, imagine a gasometer rolled over the edge of Birling Gap and hitting the rocks below. Like that, but louder. People hearing it for the first time have been known to mistake it for the warning for the End of the World. Well, no more. He’s finally got rid of it. I call him ‘John Sly’, but of course it’s not his real name. These Special Forces men have to be anonymous. I say no more. Finding the right driver is like falling in love. Last week, the R&A decided Muirfield will not stage another Open after keeping its ban on women members.
‘We look forward to the review,’ said Johnnie Cole-Hamilton, executive director of championships at the governing body. ‘But we must give them, as a private club, the time and space to carry out that review so they can do it thoroughly and professionally. ‘Royal Troon has always been aware that our view is that golf should be open to all. We are very protective of the game and the future of the game.’ Cole-Hamilton also made it clear that the R&A will not pressurise Muirfeld to have another vote on admitting women members: ‘It's a private club and it will be up to them but we'll always be watching and listening to them.’

Sentimental soul that he is, he found a place for her in his bag by turfing out the Chinese fake, so we can all take our earplugs out. Is this man really a secret soldier? Well, he told me be belongs to the Special Stoat Squadron who go behind enemy lines to thrust stoats up the trouser legs of the enemy. We’re going to try that the next time we play Cowdray.
Samantha leads 10 qualifiers SAMANTHA Rowan has led 10 qualifiers into the England Golf Grand Medal Final to find the country's champion woman medal player. Samantha, from Drift Golf Club, Surrey, won the South Region final at Blackmoor Golf Club in Hampshire with a net score of 70, two-under par. The regional final was contested by players from across England Golf’s South region which covers Hampshire, Kent, Middlesex, Surrey and Sussex.
Daly has begun a new career on the seniors circuit, where he will doubtless be looking to recoup some of the millions he squandered in a career peppered with booze, cigarettes, divorces (four) and a PGA Tour penalty sheet that cited him 32 times for conduct unbecoming a professional or ‘failure to give best effort’. The wild child, now 51, was 1995 Open Champion and joins a senior circuit which has total prize money of more than £37million – which is about the same amount that Daly claims to have lost through years of gambling and on-the-edge living.
When he said this, a melancholy mist rose in the eyes of those of us with functioning memories.

As long as Daly keeps gripping it and ripping it, the paying customers will surely support him.
The successful 10 players will meet qualifiers from five other regional finals at the final at Frilford Heath, Oxfordshire on August 13.

CORHAMPTON G.C. MEMBER PRESENTS SIRMOOR RIFLES TROPHY ON HIS 100TH BIRTHDAY The Sirmoor Rifles Golf Championship has been played at Corhampton Golf Club since 1999, the year when one of the Members, Lieutenant Colonel Peter Kemmis Betty MC, an ex-officer of the 2nd Goorkhas (Sirmoor Rifles), first invited his Regimental Association's Golf Society to play there. The Championship Trophy itself was presented to the 2nd King Edward VII's Own Goorkhas (The Sirmoor Rifles) by 'Some Honorary Officers' in India in 1923. It was won by Peter's elder brother, Mervyn, in 1933; and by his son Richard in 2007 and 2008; and by his grandson Alexander in 2012. The Championship this year was played on Thursday 5th May, which was Peter Kemmis Betty's 100th birthday. And five members of the Kemmis Betty family – sons Richard, Charlie and David, and grandsons Jonathan and Alexander – all vied for the trophy on that day . Peter came to present the Trophy. During the presentation ceremony the 31 players were reminded of the eventful life Peter has lived – darkened only by his 3½ years as a Japanese POW in Changi, Singapore, after he lead his company of Gurkhas during the
succession of defensive actions fought by his Battalion (2nd Battalion 2nd K. E. O. Goorkhas) against the Japanese all the way from the Malay/Thai Border down the Malaya Peninsular to Singapore where the Battalion was ordered to surrender. Peter was awarded the Military Cross when his company held the vital bridge over the Sungei Dipang River, were stranded the River Slim and days later in Parit Bunta they were bombed and strafed by Japanese aircraft causing many casualties and more equipment destroyed. The Battalion held a final defence position at Pontian Kechil on the south west coast of Malaya for 10 days when they were ordered to retreat across the Causeway to Singapore before it was blown up. In Singapore the battalion initially defended the Naval Base and then withdrew again to south of the Bukit Timah road when at long last they were able to prepare a very good defensive position they received the order to surrender, which was met with incredulity and anger by everyone, especially the older Gurkha Officers and NCOs whose ethos was 'never to give up'. Then followed 3½ ghastly years as a POW in Changi, the infamous Japanese POW camp
and after his release from captivity Peter initially remained behind in Malaya to collect up other survivors of the Battalion who had been imprisoned outside Singapore, before he was repatriated to India.

When Peter, his wife, and their two children at that time, embarked on the Empire Windrush to set sail for England from Singapore for leave. Off the coast of Algeria there was an explosion in the engine room and the ship caught fire and had to be abandoned. The ship sank off the coast and the Kemmis Bettys lost everything. The family returned from Algeria to England via Gibraltar. Later Peter was posted back to the 2nd Battalion and fought through the Malayan Emergency where he commanded the Battalion in the latter stages, for which he was Mentioned in Despatches.
In addition to Peter's distinguished military career he was a very good sportsman. Skiing was his favourite sport and he skied from the age of 6 to 86! Most of this was done at a time when there were few if any ski lifts or pistes and he and his brother would ascend up the mountain for a couple of hours wearing skis to get one run down off-piste. Skiing wasn't the only thing Peter enjoyed to an advanced age. He was a very decent squash player and probably a better tennis player. He was also a very fine single figure handicap golfer. The epitome of the true blue British soldier and sportsman, and of a distinguished regiment.

REMEMBER REMEMBER THE LIE OF THE LAND... PLAY IT SAFE INTO THE GREEN THIS MONTH This time of year after what we hope will have been a glorious start to the summer, the ground should be fairly firm. With the British Open looming, links golf is a hot topic. When you are watching the Open this year bear in mind how low the players keep the ball into the greens and take a leaf out of their book. They aren't doing it for fun, you can get some pretty vicious bounces on any course this time of year so best to play it safe. How? Aim to land your ball where you would if you were throwing it onto the green. Aiming of course to leave said ball as close to the flag as possible. If you adopt this mindset you'll soon start seeing your ball landing on the first available bit of green and rolling out to the flagstick.
BUT, and it's a big but. What if suddenly some sodding course designer has stuck a cavernous bunker between you and the flag? (Of course it's not your fault for not hitting the green) The rescue club is certainly not the weapon of choice. So go for it and grab that sand wedge or even better, lob wedge and psyche yourself up. The only thing getting in the way of you and that floating shot over that bunker is the fear of your ball disappearing over the green into a dark copse of trees. Fear not, just remember these words. JUST HIT THE WORLD. The club is designed to get the ball airborne for you, you don't need to help it up. All you actually need to do is think about brushing the turf under the ball. If you do this, all that glorious loft on the club will be added to the ball and hey presto.... Floaty shot over bunker nestled by the flag

With that in mind start to think a bit outside the box and get that rescue club of yours involved. Adopt a putting grip and simply putt (don't bash it as it will go an impressive distance as it's designed to do) with it. The ball will be lifted over the small shaggy area of rough in front of the green and begin winding its way to the flag along the putting surface. Once you've got the knack with this the only danger will be you opt for it around most greens. What's the harm in this as long as you're scoring well? There are after all no pictures on the score card, doesn't matter how you make those pars.

Which would you rather be, long off the tee or great from the fairway? I would say the majority of golfers would love to be long off the tee - but does that guarantee great results? Of course, it’s a great advantage to be able to launch it off the tee if you can convert those boomers with good shots from the fairway. A player we can use as a good example of this is Tiger Woods. In 2006 he won more than half the tournaments he entered. After the tee shot, he was statistically nearly three shots per round better than the average of the top forty players on the P.G.A Tour. His driving, however, was only a little above average.
stick. Tadaaa. If in doubt adopt this Pre Shot routine: brush grass firmly beside the ball. In fact don't even brush grass, bruise it. Make sure it knows who's boss. Keep backswing compact and follow through ever so slightly longer than backswing. Then address your ball still thinking you are about to do another practice swing. Bruise turf and up that ball will pop. There's no need to look up to see "has it worked, is it safe!!" As it will be. Trust it. As the summers evening start to darken it's worth grasping hold of that extra daylight while we have it and practicing on the lawn in the back garden. Before the summer is thorough (ie- next month) I'll give you some back garden drills to really get your short game in shape. On the other hand, when Rory McIlroy played in the Jack Nicklaus Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village, he finished two shots behind the winning score. Statistically, at the end of the tournament, Rory finished number one in driving and number two in putting. You’d think with those stats that he would have romped the event. However, the reason he didn’t was because he was ranked thirtieth in shots to the green. Of course when Rory is on with the irons he has the ability to destroy the field, as he did a few years back when he won the U.S. Open by a street. Of course this blend of power and accuracy is what we are all looking for. Hitting it miles and into the trees a lot of the time is no good to man nor beast. How the club is released into the ball has a lot to do with this ideal blend. In this article I’m featuring three of my young pupils who are showing great promise. They all perform a very similar action in their swings which helps them to have control over the golf ball whilst hitting it hard. My three pupils are Emma Allen, George Saunders and Alex Talbot. Emma Allen - I have worked with Emma for a number of years now. Her hard work is certainly paying off. She is now a member of the England Ladies Squad. Since last August she has been at college in the States. In her first season she set a new low female stroke average at the Missouri College.

George Saunders - George is very dedicated and works extremely hard at refining his game. He has started this season in fine style, with a win in the very prestigious Deli Cup at Hockley Golf Club, followed by a runner up spot in the South Eastern Counties Junior Championship at John O’Gaunt Golf Club. Alex Talbot - Alex, like Emma and George, is hell bent on being as good as he can be. He is certainly developing into a very fine player indeed. He is this year’s Hampshire Junior Champion and was also runner up with George Saunders in the South Eastern Counties Junior Championship at John O’Gaunt. The pictures of their swings show the club approaching impact. In the picture of George’s swing I have shown the club head just after impact. The other two show the face of the club in the follow through. Notice that in all pre impact pictures the shaft is lined up with the right forearm and the right forearm is lined up on the ball. The advantage of being in this position is that the face of the club squares to the arc well before the club meets the ball. This negates the need for any last minute shaft rotation at impact. Notice how George’s clubface is square to the arc as it moves round to the left after impact. Look how the face of the club hasn’t rolled over in the halfway through position on both Emma’s and Alex’s swing, although they are hitting hard. With the club square to the arc, before and after impact, the ball will have very little side spin. It’s no accident that they are playing well. When the club is lined up on the left arm as it approaches the ball the story is quite different!! And, indeed, these three are to be commended on their dedication to practice and being the best.
