In 1995, at the tender age of fourteen, Rose won the famous Hampshire Hog and turned professional three years later after winning the Silver Medal at Royal Birkdale’s Open in 1998.

and closer (to winning).’ Rose edged one stroke clear of a tightly bunched leaderboard with a timely birdie at the par-three 17th where he struck a five-iron from 210 yards to 10 feet, then coolly sank the putt.

He then drained a 14-footer to birdie the par-five 18th and punched his right arm skywards in delight.

Rose’s wins have come in six different American states, proving that he has the allround game to win anywhere.

He has become one of the world’s most rounded players, a fact proven by the way be holed all the vital putts over the closing stretch in New Orleans.

Tiger: The split from Lindsay was brutal TIGER Woods has described his break-up with U.S. Olympic skiing champion Lindsay Vonn as ‘brutal’. The split, announced on the ninth anniversary of the death of Woods’ father, Earl, was blamed on their busy individual sporting schedules.

‘These three days have been brutal on me. It’s tough,’ said the 39-year-old former world number one. ‘It’s tough.

Obviously it does affect me. On top of that, this three-day window from 3-5 May is always really hard. I haven’t slept.’

And this, says BBC Golf Correspondent Iain Carter, came a week after Hampshire’s Justin Rose reinforced his claims to be regarded as one of the sport’s elite with a brilliant victory in New Orleans.

‘These are the kind of results and performances that capture the public’s imagination,’ wrote Carter. I played with a couple of juniors at the weekend and asked them who are their favourite players?

get participation growing. There’s a strong focus on trying to get families to play.’

Golf’s elitist and exclusive image has, in the past, proved a barrier to attracting new players but Poole is confident clubs are changing: ‘The newer people running golf clubs are much more commercial. It’s like running a fitness centre - you need to have members.

‘It’s the view of many that, when you have an event now, we don’t put on blue blazers and white shirts and collars and ties to present prizes. We do it in our golf gear. This oldfashioned image of plus-fours and thick socks is finished. Within five years we will have changed the face of golf in the UK.’ European Solheim Cup captain Carin Koch said: ‘I think the potential in the UK is to get more women involved. With that you get more kids and families. I was shocked to hear some of the rules that still exist here - the clothing rules and women can’t play before 11 am or whatever it is. We need to make it fun and new. Hopefully they will get there.’

With the help of exciting talents such as McIlroy, Rose and Hull, golf surely stands a chance.

Royal Portrush lines up Open ROYAL Portrush could host The Open Championship as early as 2019 after a planning application for renovations to the course was approved.

The R&A confirmed the County Antrim links as an Open venue last June, being completed.

Portrush native and 2010 U.S. Open winner Graeme McDowell said: ‘I’ve seen the renovation plans - they look amazing.

‘My little brother is on the green staff at Portrush and I know they can’t wait to get their teeth into the renovations. With visitors coming over it will be a huge boost to the economy and so many great things will come out of this opportunity.’

The decision to take the tournament to Portrush followed the successful stages of the Irish Open in 2012, and will see The Open return to Northern Ireland for the first time since 1951.

New Tour chief CANADIAN Keith Pelley, right, has been appointed to succeed George O’Grady as chief executive of the European Tour.

The 51-year-old, who has been president of a media organisation in in Canada for the last five years, will start in the role this summer. Pelley said he was honoured to be selected and wanted to ensure golf remained at the ‘forefront of the game’ across the world.

O’Grady, 65, had been chief executive of the Tour since 2005, overseeing the three leading men’s professional golf circuits in Europe.

David Williams, chairman of the European Tour, said: ‘Throughout the interview process, it was clear Keith has an unwavering passion for golf, as well as a strong grasp of the challenges and opportunities facing not only the European Tour, but the wider game of golf as a whole.’

O’Grady, who now takes up a presidential role to represent the Tour through the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, said: ‘I am certain Keith will bring a fresh and business-focused perspective to the Tour.’

O’Brien home and dry for final A YOUNG Celtic Manor golfer put his local knowledge to good use when he won his age category at a qualifying event for the Principality Junior Wales Open held at his home club.

Loui O’Brien won the Under-18 nett category with a fine score of 67 on the Roman Road Course once his handicap of 17 had been deducted and he now progresses to a final held on Celtic

Manor’s Twenty Ten Ryder Cup course next month.

One-handicapper Thomas Godfrey of Fulford Heath in the Midlands won the Under-18 gross section with a sensational two-under-par round of 68. Other qualifiers included Rhondda Golf Club’s Ashlie Howard-Hobbs who beat the boys in the mixed Under-13 section with a fine return of 38 stableford points.

CHANGING OF THE GUARD After twenty four years in the role of Director of Golf at Meon Valley Marriott Hotel & Country Club, George McMenemy is handing over the reins to Neal Grist. Neal has been working with George for the last two and a half years in preparation for his promotion to the position at the resort. The two were photographed at the resort after the formal handover, which has been carefully planned and orchestrated by both to ensure a smooth handover.

George came to Meon Valley in 1991 and immediately assessed that there was much to be done to bring the golfing side of the resort up to the highest standards. The course was in need of refurbishment and improvements were planned as soon as the situation had been carefully reviewed.

The years have seen annual improvements, which were sometimes complicated by adverse weather and ensuring there was minimum disruption, but the overall plan was implemented and the resort is now recognised as one of the finest in the country. It welcomes golfers from all over the kingdom and also from the Continent.

Little did George believe when he arrived that this would be his place of work for a quarter of a century, planning to gain experience and then move into golf club management in the private sector. That never came to pass as he dedicated himself to the long term plans for the resort.

Whilst the majority of people will retire and ride off into the sunset after such a successful career in the role, George decided otherwise. After he decided to step down he contemplated the future, especially as he is eligible to join the Marriott Quarter Century Club next year, and elected to take another challenge and has accepted a new and very different position in Sales Promotion taking to the role with his usual enthusiasm. In closing he paid tribute to the excellent team

of employees he had had the privilege of working with during his career to date at Meon Valley, saying each and everyone had helped to make his life easier and more enjoyable. He made specific mention of the support and enthusiasm of Course Manager Phil Walker and all of his team of green keepers, as well as the staff in the professional’s shop, and all the PGA teaching professionals. As he said, without that help he could not have achieved all that has been completed during his term of office.

Neal Grist who came to be Head Professional was identified as the replacement for George and the plan set in place to provide the necessary training and exposure to the management systems required to take charge of a complex role in a major leisure group. If the role that George commenced has changed it is not surprising, but Neal will have the advantage of absorbing all the experience and knowhow of his mentor, and is now setting out on his own career in the hot seat as Director of Golf for the Meon Valley Marriott Hotel and Country Club.

His owe ideas are now paramount, and encompass the need to encourage new memberships, retention of the existing members by ensuring that the product is maintained at the highest standard. We wish him well in his new task, confident in the knowledge that his grounding will equip him well.

Director of Golf. He has a pleasant and courteous personality which will, without doubt, stand him in good stead for the future. We all wish George and Neal happiness and success in the new roles they have undertaken”.

have recently learnt from Martin and introduced onto my left hand grip something called the “Snuff Box” (see the red dot on the picture). It’s the little soft area at the top of your thumb joint where gentlemen of old would put their snuff before sniffing it up!

Martin says that when you put your top hand (left for right handed players and right for left handed players) onto the club your Snuff Box should be positioned over the centre of your club grip with your thumb just pointing to the inner side of the grip.

Hampshire County Championship week was held this year at Meon Valley Golf Club. A field of some 200 ladies representing all clubs in Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Channel Islands competed for trophies in various handicap categories.

Aimee Paterson (Sherfield Oaks), fresh from her studies in USA, 3rd in the 36 holes qualifier played some stunning golf to beat past County Champion and Curtis Cup player, Kerry Smith in the semis and 2014 County Champion, Georgie Mundy in the final.

HAMPSHIRE ACADEMY GIRLS PAR 3 SCRAMBLE RAISES £586 FOR EBOLA 25 disabled and impaired golfers teed off on a fresh blustery day at the coast.

We had a warm welcome from all at this Crown club where a number of our members are based.

Cams Hall is a really exceptional course and has 27 holes there helping to absorb the societies and member’s needs. We very much enjoyed our day and hope to return in the future.

Event organiser Graeme Robertson said “It was amazing the number of different types of disabilities represented at this event – amputees (above/below knee, hind quarter, bi); stroke survivors; MS (both relapsing remitting/primary progressive); rheumatoid arthritis; one arm; cancer; autism and intellectual difficulties; and even blind golfers.

Our thanks go to members of Cams Hall who provided their inside knowledge guiding us around the course. Also thanks to our own team of volunteers in delivering a successful day”.

The results were as follows. In third place was Peter King (one arm, Kent, 35points), in 2nd place was Keith Dolman (above-knee amputee, Essex, 36points) and the winner with an impressive 39points was talented junior Bobby David (autism/hypermobility, Berkshire). Bobby plays regularly with the DGA so we know he had an exceptional day (though still gets a handicap cut).

DGA is a pan-disability, not-for-profit organization, membership is free.

Three young juniors members at Alresford GC and Hampshire Academy members organised and ran their own competition to raise money for victims of the Ebola Crisis (British Red Cross).

Jenny Myers, Millie Jonathan and Harriet Riches came up with the idea of a fun Texas Scramble in teams of 3 around Alresford's 6 hole Academy Course.

Each winning team member received a "Victoria Sponge" as their prize baked by the tournament organisers, Jenny, Millie and Harriet!

The winners were Catherine Carberry, Annie and Ron Beal. To add to the success of the day, a "hole in one" was achieved by

Catherine which proved vital winning on countback.The girls with the help of their parents also ran a raffle during the morning with donated prizes.

To date the fantastic sum of £586.00 has been raised. A big "well done" to Jenny, Millie and Harriet for all the hard work put into the event.

The concept of the golf and country club, with sports facilities, spa, swimming, tennis and good dining originated in the USA, where it matched the need for a social sporting centre for the community. The idea was embraced by Nick Lane “Pa” Jackson in 1908 with a new venture at Stoke Park.

He had tried earlier, sadly unsuccessfully at Le Touquet, but he believed in the idea, and obtained support from members of the Royal family and the peerage, and then retained Harry S Colt to design the golf courses.

The latest swing coaching unit has been installed, all tools for the resident professional and his team. After registration at the reception area, the golfer can take advantage of tuition using all three senses, audio, visual and feel. With the two putting greens and the extensive short game area, there is a complete teaching arena for those wishing to improve or develop their game. It is no surprise that it has been the centre of excellence for the Hampshire Golf Union County squads, and acknowledged by their staff as being among the very best.

Once again a par 5 is the opening task task, it is 554 yards but three well placed shots should yield a good result. Then come two of my favourite holes, both classics, a dogleg left par 4, not long but demanding, and a delightful downhill par 3 over a lake to an island green.

Qualifying Rounds

It had taken time before the idea came to England, but once it did, it took off with a vengeance. The idea of all the facilities at one location, and with attractions for the ladies and children too, was bound to succeed. If Meon Valley Marriott Hotel & Country Club is not in your area, take the alternative opportunity and to go and stay and play and enjoy the break. The Resort satisfies the demands of both members and visitors to perfection, providing a complete sporting experience. The hotel complex houses all the facets described above, and with first class dining and bar facilities into the bargain.

The Meon Championship course is in superb condition, despite an abnormally wet winter, followed by a dry spells. The investment in improved drainage has paid full dividends during this period. Course Manager Phil Walker has been at the club for a number of years, and with his team keeps all twenty seven holes of both courses in peak condition. The fleet of buggies is in regular use, though the course is very comfortable and enjoyable for walking.

The 11th has benefitted from major bunker refurbishment, and the newly constructed riveted faces make the approach daunting sight. Both holes are intimidating from the tee, but to mark down two pars is very satisfying.

Then it’s uphill to the 13th, where the tee shot is crucial to see the green. Ring the bell and on to the toughest par three on the course. At 236 yards from the back tee, and with bunkers at both sides protecting the run in, this is a good test. There follows two par fours one short one long dogleg in different directions, just to test the shotmaking off the tee.

MEON VALLEY HOSTS THE TRILBY TOUR REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP OF HAMPSHIRE The heart of the complex is the golf course, set out on 225 acres of rolling wooded parkland, populated by specimen English oak trees, and the team lead by newly appointed Director of Golf Neal Grist, who has taken over the mantle from George McMenemy, is charged with the task of ensuring that this is always presented at its best throughout the year. The Championship Meon course is one of the best in Hampshire, it has hosted European Seniors PGA Tour events, Major Pro Ams and regularly been the venue of choice for many County and Regional events.

Before the round begins there is the opportunity to visit the Academy. It was completed toward the end of 2006, and is a wonderful facility to have onsite, it provides eleven covered driving bays, and with a dedicated teaching studio. The studio is equipped with the most up to date, state of the art video system for recording and analysing the student.

The round opens with a par 5 that doglegs to the left then back to the right over a brook to an elevated green, no easy start. Then there are four par four’s to negotiate, varying from 366 to 488 yards, punctuated by a par 3 that nestles in a circle of trees, choice of club will be paramount here. The 8th is a straightaway par 5, with ditches to the side and across the fairway 160 yards out, a par will be earned here. A dogleg par 4 to finish the front nine, before tackling what is considered the tougher back nine, and which is a very different challenge.

The 17th hole is another favourite, the classic risk reward hole, the green is protected by a lake and any ball not struck well will have a watery grave. The last hole is a definite birdie chance, and a pleasant way to complete the round. Like all good courses, play well is to score well, but stray and pay the price.

Finally a trip to the most important hole, the 19th, which is an essential part of any round, to savour the liquid refreshment and possibly the fine fayre on offer, whether seated inside in the comfortable bar area or outside on the terrace.

The resort also pays the same attention to the staff, for they are an integral part of the service culture, many are long serving employees and within the next year three more will join the Marriott Quarter Centenary Club, a true indication of the validity of the approach.

In addition to the Championship course there is the Valley course. In the county of Hampshire there used to be many top quality nine hole golf courses, few of them remain today, as the majority have eventually been extended to eighteen holes. That does not mean there is a lesser need for them, golf clubs with twenty

seven holes are particularly fortunate, because they are often the ideal solution to the problems of congestion, shortage of time, and simply to allow play when areas of the principle course are under maintenance. The Stirling Course comes into play at times, this constitutes playing the back nine holes of the Meon Course and then the Valley Course to make the revised eighteen, a challenge to compete with any club.

The Valley course at Meon Valley Marriott Hotel & Country Club is a perfect example of the nine hole layout, laid out on the site of an ancient Roman village, hence the name, and it is only 2879 yards long, but despite that, it is a genuine challenge, with narrow fairways, changes in elevation and water hazards in play. All in all a sporty and an enjoyable test,that will require serious attention to score well, and with a standard scratch of 68, all the shots will be required.

For guests and visitors Meon Valley offers total event management for any type of golf competition. Visitors are always welcome, and Societies can be accommodated at any time subject to course availability. Supply the entry list, arrive on the day and the team do the rest. Many of the visitors are confirmed regulars from the comments we overheard, and will be returning again. Members are

certainly not forgotten in the life of the complex, with a full fixture list and a busy social calendar.

Good facilities breed good golfers, especially when they start young, and the Junior Scholarship programme has been exceedingly successful. Free membership is available to youngster until they reach eighteen years of age. The scheme has been in place over ten years and has produced top quality amateurs such as Harry Ellis who won the English Strokeplay Championship and is now at Florida State University, Emma Allen another product of the Scholarship is also at university in the USA. It is a wonderful scheme that continues to provide youngsters, many who would not be able to do so under their own steam, with the chance to learn and progress in the game.

IT’S ALL WIGHT FOR A GOLFING LADIES DOUBLE 1. Rose secures 2. Dawn leads grand final place a pack of 10 ROSE Green completed a double for the Isle of Wight when she won her way through to England Golf’s Grand Medal Final.

Rose, from Ryde Golf Club, became the second island player in the space of a week to win an England Golf regional medal final after Dawn Hodge of Shanklin & Sandown took the honours at the South event (see right). Rose has won the South West qualifier at WestonSuper-Mare and said: ‘It’s a coup for the island and helps to put us on the map.’

Euphoric She leads the 10 players who have claimed their places in the Grand Medal Final. They are: Rose Green (Ryde), Carole Kerley (Ferndown), Cath Levell (Wells), Lorna Elliott (Dartmouth), Julia Gibson (Wallasey), Karen Preedy (The Kendleshire), Dawn Emmerson (Perranporth), Lisa Greenwood (Canford Magna), Rebecca Mackworth-Praed (Dummer) and Amanda Wright (Yeovil).

They’ll play off with qualifiers from five other events to find the country’s top handicap golfer at the Grand Medal Final at Frilford Heath in Oxfordshire in August.

TEN ladies – led by Dawn Hodge from the Isle of Wight – are heading to England Golf’s Grand Medal Final after they booked their places in qualifying.

Rose Green: ‘It’s a coup for the island’

It will be a feature of the new Golf Week festival, staged by England Golf to create a national grand finale for a host of handicap and team championships. Rose, who was playing off 18, had a net score of two-under 70 and won on countback from Carole Kerley.

‘It’s amazing and the fact there were over 100 competitors made me feel quite euphoric,’ she said. ‘It was soggy, foggy and cold and I feel very proud to have held it together and played well in those conditions.’

Rose took up golf when she was 30 but gave up after five years when she had her two daughters. She’s been playing again for two years and said: “I absolutely love it. I go out to enjoy the exercise and if I play well that’s a bonus.’

The club accepted its first women members in 2012 but chairman Billy Payne has said it is unlikely Augusta could host another tournament. But Creamer, the 2010 Women’s U.S. Open Champion, suggested a women’s version could be played the week after the men’s event in April.

TEENAGE Alice Hewson held on tight to beat a swing wobble and win the Hampshire Rose by a stroke at North Hants.

‘I think the patrons and everybody would love to have two weeks there, two tournaments. Why wouldn’t you?’ she said.

Currently, there are five major tournaments in the women’s game: the U.S. Women’s Open, Women’s PGA Championship, Women’s British Open, ANA Inspiration and the Evian Championship.

The 28-year-old world number 27 added: ‘It’s 2015. I think Augusta and the Masters and everybody with that event, they want to grow the game so badly. That’s what it is, about growing the game and giving people opportunities. There’s no reason why we can’t do that in women’s golf. We’re just as much a part of growing the game. I think somebody’s got to speak up and somebody’s got to say something. It’s an idea.’

Hewson made an excellent start to the event, as she put some swing changes into effect, but she was forced to dig deep to win. She was two-under for the first round and was four-under after 28 holes, but then she slipped back to old methods and on to the bogey trail.

‘My driving got a bit wayward, but I managed to just about keep a score going.

I was very pleased to hold on when it was getting difficult.’

She finished on one-over for 36 holes and one shot clear of Inci Mehmet (Royal Mid-Surrey) and Sophie Keech (Parkstone). Eloise Healey (West Lancashire) and Gemma Clews (Delamere Forest) were a further stroke back.

Mixed team for Euro golf A NEW mixed-team golf event will feature in the 2018 European Sports Championships, which Glasgow will co-host with Berlin.

The plan is for Gleneagles to stage the event on the course that hosted the Ryder Cup last year, and bring the men’s and women’s game together in a new format.

The European Sports Championships was awarded to Glasgow and Berlin recently and will take place every four years. Just under 3,000 athletes are expected to take part in events in Glasgow, which is hosting cycling, rowing, swimming and triathlon. A further 1,500 will compete at the European Athletics Championships in Germany at the iconic Olympic Stadium.

One of the unique features of The Dorset Golf Resort is the wide variety of flowers that feature around the complex throughout the year.

Having played limited golf during the winter months, I’ve finally come out of hibernation and am ready for a new season of golf.

Keen to play different courses and Opens, I spent hours completing entry forms and communicating with fellow players to winkle out their handicaps and cdh numbers in order to sign everyone up.

Then, having written cheques totalling hundreds of pounds, I’ll now have to wait patiently and keep checking my bank account to see what cheques have been cashed, as that’s the usual indication that ‘you’re in’.

Unfortunately, everything in the golfing worlds seems to start at the same time so my diary is now stuffed full of golf in the coming months with countless Coffee Mornings, Opens, a series of Inter-Club Matches, loads of Friendlies, Invitations, various Mixed Matches and a Pro Am, on top of my usual weekly fixtures.

Whilst it’s great to play different events and courses, I’ve come to the conclusion they’re usually very long days by the time you’ve travelled to the course, enjoyed a social cup of coffee, queued to tee off, worked your way around 18 holes, waited patiently for the field to come in and then

finally sat down for a leisurely meal and listened to the usual speeches. There is little chance of slipping off early.

In fact, it’s not uncommon for golf days to take over 8 hours, which ironically is as long as the average working day! This leaves you with just enough time (and energy) to toss your club kit in the washing machine ready for the next game before collapsing into bed. The bonus is at least you’ve been fed, although constantly being served large meals with puddings isn’t good for the pounds - I’m talking bank balance and waistline!

Many of us end up playing as many as four games a week in the peak of the season and whilst it definitely sharpens your game, it can equally devastate it through sheer exhaustion.

The arrival of spring and good weather has kicked it all off with an explosion of colour all around the 27 holes of championship golf and amongst the Scandinavian Log homes.

A sea of yellow Gorse has lit up the Lakeland & Parkland course which combining with the cherry blossom tree’s bursting into bloom is a welcome sight after the winter months. The real show case is yet to come occurring every year without fail around the distinctive Woodland course.

Carved through a rhododendron forest each hole will be lined with wall to wall flowers.

These large shrubs showcase intense pink, lavender, white and purple blooms and can actually be found flourishing throughout the resort even framing a number of the houses.

This year is certainly not set to disappoint.

The display is set to start somewhere near the end of May and typically lasts for a few weeks. It’s breathtaking to see and let alone play amongst so any guests are in for a real treat!

It’s safe to say that after the typical English winter the Resort really has come up smelling of roses.

It doesn’t help that this busy period clashes with the growth explosion in the garden. Before you know it, your garden’s gone to pot and the main features are the vibrant yellow dandelions, thick borders of stinging nettles and a lawn that’s verging on an uninhabited, wild meadow - perfect for practising getting out of the rough.

The Elixir of Golf - Distance The most common request I receive from my customers is for more distance. So I thought I would try to explain some of the ways that are open to me in attempting to fill that request.

There are certain changes that will work and there are definitely changes that won’t. There are lots of “Old Wives Tales” in golf – Keep your head still, Slow down, etc but there is one true adage that can not be broken even by the pros :-

“The longer the length, the heavier the total weight, the stiffer the shaft, and the less the loft, the harder the clubs will be to hit.”

Many people believe that the longer the club the further the ball will go. It is on this premise that manufacturers make there drivers at an ever increasing length. One major manufacturer is now producing a driver at 46.5”! The correct statement is that the longer the club the more potential for distance. Longer club length will NOT guarantee more distance with the woods.

The longer the club the harder it is to hit the centre of the club face. For every ½ inch you hit the driver off-centre, you are going to lose 5-7 percent of your potential distance. It is an amazing fact that not only the average length but the most common length of driver on the PGA tour is 44.5”. If they could hit a longer driver consistently and persistently, they would.

So why do the manufacturers make such long drivers? The reason is the law of average states that no matter your skill level occasionally you will contact the middle of the club face with a good swing and the ball will disappear! The over whelming feeling then is all I have to do is just work on my swing and this will repeat. Sadly this is not the case.

The only golfers who are able to increase distance by going to longer-length woods are golfers with a smooth tempo AND who have a very good set of swing fundamentals, i.e. good turn, good balance, smooth transition between the end of the backswing and beginning of the downswing, and a good rotation through impact with the body.

The only exceptions to this are golfers who are very tall AND have short arms. If you don’t have these swing skills, swallow your pride and stay away from drivers that are 45 inches and longer for men, or 44 inches and longer for women. If you find your driver is

good for that long solid shot four times or less out of 10 tee shots, if you go shorter, you will improve your overall distance because you will hit the centre of the face more often.

The common feeling amongst club golfers is that if you launch the ball at a higher angle it will be affected by the wind and will lose distance because of no roll. Sadly studies have shown that this is not the case. Wind will affect all shots, but the difference in the wind affect between a 10° launch angle and a 14° launch angle is minimal. It was not so long ago that all the pros launch their drives at a low angle and then the ball soared high at the end of the flight. They now realise a rainbow flight is the secret to a long drive.

About 6 years ago the average driver loft for the Pros was 7° and for the club golfer it was 10°. Today these figures are now 10° and 10°. The slower your swing speed the higher the launch angle should be. If the Pros have increased their driver loft – shouldn’t the club golfer? Here’s why – golfers with a driver swing speed of 90 mph and less do not generate enough backspin on the tee shot to allow the ball to create its own lift to hold it in the air and maximize carry distance. The way to maximize carry distance is to launch the ball at a higher angle so it can stay in the air longer to take full advantage of the speed at which the ball was hit. If you’re washing the car with your son or daughter and you want to shoot them with the hose, once they start running away, your only chance to get them wet is to angle the hose at a higher launch angle.

set of irons that he proved could hit the ball 10 to 15 yards further than his existing set and it was all down to the “better” shaft.

I explained to this golfer to hit the ball further these clubs had to be both longer and less lofted. In addition this “better” shaft was heavier than his existing shaft. Luckily I had an iron with this shaft in one of my trial clubs. When I adjusted the lofts and lengths to be the same, we carried out a hitting test using the Vector.

The customer was genuinely surprised to find his existing irons hit the ball further, albeit by 5 yards. It was only after this proof, did he believe me and immediately cancelled his order for his new “wonder” clubs.

Remember, the tour pros rarely use the stock, standard shaft that is installed in the heads with which they play. They experiment or seek experienced fitting advice to choose the shaft with the best combination of weight

and overall distribution of the shaft’s flexibility (tip-half to butt-half stiffness distribution) that best matches their strength, tempo, rhythm and swing movements – you, too, should hit the ball as well as you can.

Using a higher lofted driver will definitely give the golfer more distance, but that is not the only benefit. Higher lofted drivers will also help the driver hit the ball much straighter.

Take the example of the irons. Lower loft irons are well known for their difficulty for the average golfer. The higher lofted 'scoring' clubs are much easier to keep on the target line. So if you are looking for a new driver to give you the extra yards you're looking for and not sacrifice accuracy, look to a higher lofted club.

The adage states that the heavier the club, the stiffer the shaft, the harder it is to hit. The major factor in club weight is shaft weight.

So the shaft is the determining factor on both weight and flex. The shaft can only increase distance through its possible effect on Launch Angle or the Total Weight of the clubs. I recently had a visit from a golfer who told me that his club pro was offering him a

Starting here: Special three-page review of Paultons Golf Centre, Ower, Nr Romsey

THE DRIVE Paultons Golf Centre is located near to Junction 2 of the M27 motorway, providing very easy access. It is close to the picturesque town of Romsey, and on the doorstep of the New Forest As you arrive at the entrance to the Centre you are met by an impressive pair of ornamental iron gates, imposing and majestic, set off by the mile long straight drive taking you along to the clubhouse through the golf course. The road passes through a column of mature trees standing like sentries as you drive along, offering the first glimpse of what lies ahead on the back nine of the course. To the right, a narrow fairway bordered by trees, and to the left a short hole protected by a huge lake covered with water lilies, little margin for error on either hole, but more of that later.

Paultons Golf Centre is a fairly recent addition to the golfing scene, it was conceived by Terry Brain, an entrepreneur who came over from the Channel Islands in the 1990’s. He purchased the property, which was originally part of the Paultons Estate, an estate of classic woodland and parkland laid out by Capability Brown.

Situated on the edge of the New Forest, it was the perfect site for a golf course, and the results are now there for all to see. After the initial period of development, the complex was sold to American Golf, which was eventually acquired by the present owners Crown Golf, the biggest operator of golf course in the United Kingdom, with over thirty courses under their control and management.

The Centre comprises a first class eighteen hole championship course, a nine hole par three academy layout and a fully equipped under cover driving range.

A fleet of buggies and a very well stocked Professional shop add the finishing touches to a very fine facility. The club is a hybrid, it

has a healthy club membership in excess of five hundred and it also fully caters for and welcomes Pay and Play golfers.

The club is a hive of activity, the course is always in very good condition. The first and paramount reason is the quality of the original construction, all the greens were built to USGA specification, ensuring year round availability.

It is a proud boast that there have rarely ever been temporary greens, even during the harshest winters. Much of this is credit to the greens staff lead by Head Green-keeper Peter Varlow who recently transferred from Wickham Park.

The General Manager is Simon Blanshard, who joined Crown Golf in 2014 after a lengthy career in the industry. A fully qualified PGA Professional he joined the pro ranks in 1988 at Goodwood Golf Club.

He then went off to Kuala Lumpur to play on the Asian Professional circuit. After four years he decided his future lay with club management and returned to Goodwood for

a short time before setting off again on his travels East, this time to be resident professional at Desett Lakes Golf Club in Saudi Arabia. When his contract concluded he returned to the United Kingdom and served at Cowdrey Park and Hill Barn before getting the wanderlust again and going off to the Caribbean paradise of Canouan Island and the Raffles Resort. There he enjoyed six years looking after the golfing needs of the rich and famous before deciding it was time to head home to the UK. After four years at Botley Park he joined the Crown organisation and arrived and settled at Paultons Golf Centre. He has a very experience team, Head Professional is Mark Williamson, who has been at the club from the very beginning, a mine of information and who knows all there is to know about Paultons. Chris Farr is in charge of The Academy, which is home to the Hampshire Junior Squad, the under fourteen year olds.

To complement the golfing hierarchy John Downer is a long serving Administrator, making a team that ensures the club runs smoothly for the benefit of members and visitors alike.

There is a positive air of `innovation at Crown clubs, the latest idea which will be coming to Paultons Golf Centre is FOOTGOLF. It is already established at other Crown courses and proving very popular. For those who have not seen or heard of this new game, I will explain, though the picture will convey the idea very rapidly. A glance at the Wikipedia encyclopaedia will tell you that Footgolf is a precision sport where players kick a football into a cup in as few shots as possible. The cup is 21 inches diameter in place of the usual golfing size. The first tournament took place in Holland in 2008. The American league was started in 2011, and by 2014 FOOTGOLF was offered at 240 courses in the USA. Some courses even have holes running parallel to the golf course. There are already courses all over the country, at the last count there were over fifty attached to golf clubs and Paultons will be offering an introduction on The Academy course at the beginning of June. Bring your footie skills to the golf club and have a go!

When all the information has been read and absorbed, the time comes when you have to play the golf course, the heart of any club.

The course has changed over the years, since I first came to play, the front nine and the back nine have been reversed,, but the current layout leaves the better and more scenic of the two halves until the latter part of the round, making it necessary to build the score before tackling the best and most challenging holes on the course.

It was interesting to have the chance to chat to fellow golfers on the way round, as we took the photographs we asked if they were members or visitors. It transpired that they were members at Cams Hall, another Crown club, and were taking advantage of the Crown Open Play arrangements. They had found the arrangement much to their liking, and found it a well-used benefit. It was also fascinating to see the gentleman still using a hickory shafted mashie for his chipping.

The first fits modern thinking, an opening hole not too difficult to get the round under way, though the front bunker will catch any shot leaking to the right. The second is a par five and for the longer hitters a definite birdie opportunity. Aptly named Huggets Nightmare, the third is a tough par three, because missing the green will make it very difficult to get up and down, with trees left and right and water behind. The mid holes in the nine will test the striking power, as there are two par four over four hundred yards, and a lengthy par three, three pars will be a welcome addition to the scorecard.

If your front nine has gone well, it will set you up for a good back nine, for there are holes on that half of the course that demand all your attention. The ground that one of the greatest landscape gardeners of all time helped to sculpt, is now home to a golf course, one that commemorates his contribution by naming the 17th hole after the great man.

The last three holes provide opportunities, two par five’s split by a short par three, which needs attention with two deep bunkers and out of bounds left. The last to the clubhouse is definitely reachable in to two, so birdies are on the agenda.

So to the back nine, the dogleg tenth starts the back nine, once again easing you into the challenge, then comes a stretch of really memorable holes, set in mature woodland, where accuracy is more rewarding than length. There are two good short holes on the back nine, the shortest of all is just 126 yards, but still manages to cause problems.

The signature hole is the 15th, Jan’s Dilemma, a classic short hole over a lake,

with large splashes of water lilies, beautiful when in full bloom, and if you are really fortunate you make spot one the large koi carp basking in the shallows.

So picturesque but so dangerous, for the lake foreshortens the hole, and it is important to take enough club. Anything underhit will soon make you forget the beauty of the hole.

The two toughest holes to score on are 16th and 17th, the 16th tree lined left and an elevated green make par a result, and Capability’s Turn at 456 yards with a slight dogleg will test the best of players. The last hole that little bit easier has been earned after that punishing finishing stretch.

Hopefully you will have found the odd moment to enjoy the surroundings and the wildlife. You may even be privileged to see the resident pheasant on the tee, he will undoubtedly totally ignore you and carry on the business of find his lunch as you launch your drive away.

In summary, it is more than a very good test of golf, with changing scenery, trees, water hazards and strategic bunkers, not to mention the out of bounds. This is a welldesigned modern layout, with several holes that will stick in the memory until for the next visit, for there is sure to be one.

After the exertions on the course it is time to retire to the clubhouse for some refreshment, whether taken indoors or out on the terrace, very pleasant when the sun is shining. The catering is very good, and for visiting societies or golf days just the perfect setting to complete a day out. Societies are accommodated at any time by prior arrangement, and the staff provides every assistance to ensure the success of the day, whatever the purpose.

There is a variety of packages, priced to accommodate differing requirements and Golf Day organiser Keryn Chambers will be happy to assist. For those wanting a little variety, it is possible to combine some golf on the Academy course.

If you coming to stay in the area, there are lots of attractions within a short drive, Broadlands, Beaulieu, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, Paultons Park especially for the younger members of the party, and of course the New Forest itself. A wonderful place to explore and enjoy.

MOTORING FANTASIA The decision to make another visit to Dorset resulted in another stay at the first class Dorset Golf & Country Club. Previous trips to the excellent resort confirmed what a perfect base it is to play golf and enjoy the numerous other attractions close at hand. On site, in addition to twenty seven holes of fine golf, there is also bowls, coarse fishing and other activities such as clay shooting and gliding close by. The Scandinavian type houses are spacious, very well equipped and even boast a sauna. The accommodation is ideal for self- catering, but the clubhouse restaurant just across the road is the ideal complement, with a first class menu and very good food and wine. All in all everything the touring golfer or sportsman could wish for.

On our last visit we earmarked the recently constructed facility at Sparkford just off the A303 near Yeovil, housing the Haynes International Motor Museum. The new building was opened in April 2014, a far cry from the collection of humble buildings, which were the semi derelict remains of an American ammunition dump; and that originally housed the collection which had been started by the founder John H Haynes OBE in 1985. He started with his personal collection of just twenty nine cars, which included Rolls Royces, Bentleys and Lagondas. The status of being an independent charitable trust means that the collection can never be broken up, thus creating a legacy for all future enthusiasts.

Today there is a magnificent structure; purpose built to house the superb collection of cars and motor cycles which transport the visitor from the birth of the motor car to the modern day. It took two and a half years to build and cost over six million pounds, and in addition to the museum, there is a cafeteria, conference and functions suites and a showground and test track, just about everything the car enthusiast could dream about. The staggering thing about the collection is that so many people are unaware of it, and I must confess to being among them until I spotted the scene driving along the A303 from the South West, but what a find it turned out to be. My colleague who has worked in the automobile industry all his life was the ideal companion for the visit, giving insights into the various exhibits, and even pointing out those exhibits that even he had never seen previously. He was delighted by the recreation of a working garage of the 1950’s, with vehicles he had worked on during his apprenticeship.

We were fortunate on the day of our visit, the weather was fine and drawn up on the car park were six vintage Austin 7’s: lined up on parade in all their glory. From the time you enter the spacious foyer, the journey begins, with iconic vehicles there to greet you, including a superb Rolls Royce in all its majesty. Beginning at the dawn of motoring with the developments made by Karl and Bertha Benz and Gottleib Daimler in Germany, building on the concepts evolved

by Italian pioneers very early in the 19th century, the motor industry was created. As the guide states, Simply put, the motor car was invented by the Germans, made practical by the French and made affordable by the Americans. Each of the countries is very well represented in the displays together with the very best of the British car industry, and each offers cars to dream about.

The various sectors of the museum are dedicated to themes, and the displays match the titles perfectly, the Veteran covers the era from the start of the 20th century is epitomise by the 1905 Daimler Limousine, and the Vintage era which stretched from 1919, the end of the Great War until 1930.

Wheels Around the World includes specimen vehicles from India, Japan, a late starter in the automobile industry and even a Chaika, the limousine of the Russian Government officials, as well stalwarts from Germany and France. Many recognisable and some very very different.

The Mini and Micro hall contains many of the examples of the design by Alec Issigonis, Father of the Mini, but also the German and

Italian equivalents. The Great British Marques are precisely that, names that continue to carry the image of great design and style, Jaguar, Lotus, Aston Martin, plus the Jensen, cars that I saw regularly being road tested in the 1950’s along Brandon Way, West Bromwich the site of the factory, in the town where I was born. The classic outline of the 1965 E Type Jaguar Coupe is ageless and the four types of Lotus, in their brilliant bright yellow livery make a beautiful corner.

If there was a need to experience the impact of colour the a stroll through The Red Room could convince you that there is only one colour for a sports car, the perfect image and it is no surprise that it was chosen as the trademark for Ferrari, the Rosso Corsa, the national emblem for its national motor racing. The whole area is a mass of red, with sports cars of every make and type, all displayed in one blaze of colour.

A visit to the Morris Story, and the reconstructed workshop creates nostalgia for a time before computers, when grease stained overalls were the uniform of the good mechanic. Then there is a chance to stroll down Memory Lane, with cars from the 1940’s to the 1970’s, each and every instantly remembered, part of a childhood which saw some of the greatest sociological changes ever, and meant that the man in the street was catapulted into the car owning fraternity. Then a glance at the Luxury Cars, which remained out of reach, but deserving of admiration. The American Dream is just that, cars only seen at the cinema, or later on TV are there to be seen, before going up to the Motor Cycle Mezzanine, where road bikes, track machines and everything on two wheels are displayed.

The final delights are the two halls dedicated to the Supercar and the Hall of Motorsport.

The Supercar starts with the 4.5 litre Bentley, which won the 24 Hour Race at Le Mans through to the Jaguar XJ220.

To finish the day it had to be Motorsport, it was opened by none other than Sir Stirling Moss and contains examples of Formula 1 cars associated with such names as Fangio, Moss, Clark, Senna, Hill and Stewart. A truly marvellous way to conclude a fabulous day out.

I conclude with two unreserved personal recommendations, Dorset Golf & Country Club for golf and as a base for exploration, and the Haynes International Motor Museum for a fascinating and rewarding insight into the beauty of the motor car. I hope that the photographs convey the magnificence of the exhibits.

Societies WICKHAM Park Golf Club is known for having one of the best year-round courses in the South, and can tailor-make events for golf societies with groups of between 12 and 70 players.

Membership pricing policy?

Caversham Heath annual Captain’s Drive-In competition Caversham Heath captains for 2015 – Danny Dover and Jane Weller – drove into office at the weekend in the annual Captain’s Drive-In competition.

A field of 72 competitors then took part in a Texas Scramble competition.

Three teams returned a gross 68 score, but the fourball of Mick Beaumont, Clive Adamson, Chris Parker and Fiona Ives took the honours from Darren Bonney, Duncan Mee, Peter King and Daphne Barker and the team of Andrew Parker, John Purnell, Pete Machin and Kirsty Cannon.

The longest drive took place on the 18th hole with competitors obliged to use an old persimmon headed driver. The men’s longest drive was won by Jon Winstanley with Rachel Downey collecting the ladies prize.

During the prizegiving a sweepstake £5 draw was conducted. It was won by Peter King and Julie Daniels who received £65, with £130 donated to this year’s Captains’ Charity, The Samaritans.

The prize for guessing the distance of the captains’ drives (a combined 426 yards) went to a former captain Peter Bishop.

Thomas Parker (12hcp) won the Junior Medal with nett 71. Runner-up was Edward Houghton (10hcp) with nett 76 and third was Jack Bristow (28hcp) with nett 77.

Caversham Heath Ladies enjoyed a thrilling victory in the final of the Bronze League against Castle Royle. Everything came down to the last match with Sheila Evans emerging triumphant.

Rickie Fowler: The first man in the history of the Players Championship to card just 11 strokes for the last four holes at Sawgrass, considered among the toughest in golf

RICKIE Fowler played golf from a different planet as he beat Sergio Garcia and unheralded American Kevin Kisner in a play-off on a dramatic final day at the Players Championship at Sawgrass.

Birdie, par, birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie run leads to Sawgrass Players triumph

Fowler set the tone in regulation play as he went through the last four holes in an amazing 11 strokes - the first man in the history of the event to do so.

Having also birdied the 13th hole, it meant he played the last six holes in six under par: a run of birdie, par, birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie.

Then Fowler birdied the famous island green 17th for the third time in the day to land the first prize of £1.16million in the tournament often referred to as the Fifth Major. It was the sweetest response in a week when Fowler and Ian Poulter were in a strange anonymous survey conducted by Sports Illustrated.

In the first three-hole aggregate play-off in tournament history, Garcia was level par as the two Americans birdied the 17th.

‘I laughed at the poll,’ said Fowler. ‘This event has the Major feel, one of the best fields we play all year, on a tough golf course.’

Matching the heat on the warmest day of the year so far, the European Tour player’s hot round was more than enough to snatch one of the largest cheques on the schedule, £1,500, from the hard-charging Benn Barham (PGolfCoaching@Pedham) who shot a sevenunder-par 65 for second spot and £900.

Bland started with an eagle and never looked back, birdieing the third, fifth and eighth to be five-under-par at the turn.

Bland’s birdie streak kicked after the turn, making birdies from the 12th to the 18th, on his way to setting a new professional course record.

Which he did. He birdied the 12th and 13th, and then made a terrific eagle at the 14th to reach four-under-par with holes to go.

PAUL Broadhurst crushed the challenge of fellow Ryder Cup player Phillip Price with another superb display in the sunshine to win the PGA in England and Wales (South West) Cornish Festival by seven shots.

He trailed Price by two going into the final day. The Welshman failed to master the crosswinds at St Enodoc and signed for two-over-par 71. Broadhurst, meanwhile, was relishing the benign Trevose links. His seven-under 64 included two eagles at the par five ninth and the par four 15th when he holed a 60-yard wedge for the second successive day.

‘But the ride on the final seven holes was great fun, and gave me a boost for the upcoming PGA Surrey Open at Kingswood.’

Treleavan makes his mark at Hayling He edged out Matthew Rice (Purley Downs) by one stroke while in third place were Tom Fleming (Frilford Heath) and Jonathan Barnes (Oak Park) who both carded 69s.

CLUBS WILL BE TESTED

BY A TEAM OF SECRET GOLF ‘CUSTOMERS’ GOLF clubs in three counties are to be put under the microscope by ‘secret golfers’ in a pilot scheme to test customer service.

England Golf, the governing body for English amateur golf, has partnered with 59Club, customer service analysts and training consultants, to launch the scheme. The agreement includes support a pilot project which England Golf is running in Warwickshire, Staffordshire and Northamptonshire to trial new ways of increasing participation and club membership.

59Club’s mystery testers will make telephone enquiry calls and live visits at selected clubs in each of the three counties. They will analyse customer service levels, including those offered to non-members who visit as day guests. 59Club will also gather feedback from current golf club members.

The data and feedback will be collated and analysed before a series of staff training programmes are put in place.

England Golf has also agreed a package for its GolfMark clubs, giving them access to 59club’s customer service and sales resources at a subsidised rate.

The partnership between the two organisations supports the aims of the England Golf strategic plan - Raising Our Game - which calls on all who care about the game to work together to create a brighter future for golf, including more players, more members and stronger clubs.

Richard Flint, the England Golf director of participation and club support, said: ‘59Club has a track record of success with individual resorts and golf clubs and many of its analysis tools - including in-depth, golfmember surveys - will prove advantageous to us as we work to grow the game.

‘This partnership will allow England Golf to use club profiling to identify clubs requiring support, and also to trial 59Club’s customerservice tools and mentoring.’

Simon Wordsworth, chief executive at 59Club and a fellow of the PGA, added: ‘Growing the game at the amateur level is essential for the whole industry.’

A PAIR of grandads have beaten the odds to score their first ever hole-inone - on consecutive weekends and on the same golf course.

John Dunn and Wilson Weatherhead have been friends for 60 years, played on the same cricket team in Guisborough and their children are even married. John, 74, shot the hole-in-one on the 9th of Saltburn Golf Club. The odds of an amateur hitting the shot has been estimated at 12,500 to one and it took John 37 years to achieve. But the very next weekend, Wilson, 78, followed up the feat with his very own hole-in-one on the course’s 18th hole.

Did Wilson, who has played golf for around 20 years, feel the pressure to match his long-time friend? ‘I could do it at any day of the week - the hole I shot mine on was 220 yards, John’s was only about 150!’ joked Wilson.

John said: ‘It is quite rare to hit a hole-inone. The two pros at the club told me they haven’t got one.’

Peter beats odds SCORING a hole-in-one is a remarkable feat in itself but amputee Peter Light defied massive odds to achieve every golfer’s dream despite recovering from a stroke and having only one leg.

Peter, 62, from Cardiff, scored his ace on the 160-yard, par-three 15th at Whitchurch GC. AN AUSTRALIAN golfer has suffered leg injuries after being bitten by a crocodile on a course in Port Douglas, Queensland.

John Lahiff, 75, disturbed the 4ft saltwater croc while looking for a ball in water at the 11th hole.

‘I didn’t see the croc sunbaking just on the edge of the water.

I walked past it and then it got me on the way back and as soon as it grabbed me it took off into the water.’

Mr Lahiff, speaking from Cairns Hospital, said he had seen crocodiles there before and ‘should have realised to be a bit more aware’.

He manage to drive himself back to the club house to get help, from where he was taken to hospital with a deep cut to his shin and puncture wounds to his calf.

Crocodiles are a common sight on the course, and signs warn players of the dangers (picture above).

Mr Lahiff said he would not be put off playing golf: ‘I will try not to hit balls in the water in future!’

He said: ‘I started playing golf when I was 10 and achieved my first hole-in-one 19 years ago after already having played the game for 33 years. Since then, I have recovered from a stroke and had my left leg amputated in 2008, but with the support of my golfing buddies, I was able to continue playing the game I love and play on average about twice a week. I feel incredibly proud of myself, especially since I’ve had to change my game completely since I lost my leg. My secret for a hole-inone is that as long as I’m still standing after hitting the ball, I’ve got a chance.’

Oh boy, Danny!

A 27-handicap golfer left fellow members at London Scottish GC bewildered recently and asking themselves ‘is he the highesthandicapper to score an ace on a par-four?’

While most high-handicappers would do well to even reach the green on a par-four, the golfing gods smiled on Danny Lott that day as he holed his 278-yard tee shot.

Danny, 31, from Wimbledon, achieved his monster ace with a three-wood on the 16th at London Scottish GC.

2015 Wellow Golf Club Ladies Spring Rally 17 teams of 7 competed for the Spring Rally Claret Jug on a beautiful morning ar Wellow Golf Club.

The ladies did not play with their own team players but in fourballs with members from all different clubs.

At the end of the game the best 5 stableford scores were added together to give a team score.

This years winners with a team score of 160 were the ladies from Hamptworth Golf Club with Dudsbury, runners up with a close 159.

FATHER PAYS TRIBUTE TO SON WITH TIMELESS HOLE-IN-ONE A father from Kemnay, Scotland, was given an opportunity to pay homage to his late son after achieving an ace on a hole dedicated to him.

Fred Milne, 66, who works in the oil and gas industry, scored the ace – his second in eight years – on the 185-yard, par-three 14th at Kemnay GC, which has a bench dedicated to his son, Dan, who passed away six years ago following a car accident when he was just 23.

He said: “Dan was a keen golfer and we played together a lot – since he was 10 years old. This is a special hole for me and we always have a dram at the bench to remember him.

“With him I mind, I struck a perfect fivehybrid; the moment was witnessed by the group in front who we were playing through at the time – magic.”

THE TALE OF THE WILD DUCK An invitation to a 16th century country pub to witness the manufacture of unique ales seemed to be too good to be true. However it brought me to the village of Ewen on the outskirts of Cirencester and the hostelry called The Wild Duck. It proved to be a very well worth journey, because it made me aware of a totally innovative approach to brewing beer, the Technobrewery™ - a new development that makes it convenient for any bar and its clientele to benefit from fresh beers brewed on site.

With the pressures on margins and the need to generate additional income, I am often asked about new developments in the leisure industry and golf clubs in particular. I had not considered brewing beer, but after seeing the demonstration, I am certain that this new development in brewing beer will impact on the bar takings of the golf clubs in the land, particularly for those entrepreneural management teams in charge.

However that is for consideration, firstly the reasons for my visit, and then the reasons for my conclusions. It will not be a panacea for all, but for the ones that embrace the concept, the results could be dramatic with the right teamwork. He and his staff find technobrewing any bitter, mild stout or any ale easier than thiey ever thought possible. His three best selling ales are called Duckpond, Golden Duck and Ewen Oil. The Wild Duck was the first pub to install a Technobrewery™, an investment that was an act of faith by the owner it was the only brewery that made sense for his bars. He believed in the product and wished to pioneer the use of it. The demonstration began from the automatic computer controlled cleaning process, essential for the successful brewing of the ales. Then the setting of the computer, loading the ingredients and running the process through each stage to kegging. All of which was completed automatically, under the watchful eye of Dino, who explained exactly what was taking place, and describing the capacity for the computer to notify the brewer remotely if required. The finishing stages were especially interesting for that is where the distinctive character and flavours can be added to the ale. The over-riding perception was of how simple the process has

LEGENDS OF THE GAME...

SIR MICHAEL BONALLACK OBE AMATEUR EXTRAORDINAIRE On the 31st December 2014, Sir Michael Bonallack celebrated his 80th birthday, having been probably the most influential amateur golfer that the world has seen.

Not only a brilliant player but a superb organiser who throughout his life has been a focal point of golf, and not just amateur golf, in the United Kingdom. His playing record is quite remarkable, unparalleled in the modern era, giving him recognition as Europe’s finest amateur, in a career which encompasses winning the British Amateur Championship five times between 1951 and 1970. He won the English Amateur Title five times, and was four times successful in the English Stroke Play (the Brabazon Trophy).

He won the Silver Medal as leading amateur in the Open Championship twice, in 1968 and 1971. Michael played in nine Walker Cup matches against the USA, twice as playing Captain, and was in seven World Amateur teams. His greatest moment he says was in 1971, when he was playing Captain of the side that won the Walker Cup over the Old Course at St Andrews. “It does not, cannot get, any better than that” were his words.

Michael Francis Bonallack was born in Chigwell, Essex in 1934. He first played golf while on holiday at Saunton when he was 10 years old. Fascinated by the game he joined Chigwell Golf Club, but after a few years joined Thorpe Hall Golf Club near Southend on Sea, the club he represented throughout his career.

By the age of 16 he was a scratch golfer, and won the Essex Boys Championship in 1950 and again the following year, going on to win the British Boys the year after.

Not surprisingly he dominated Essex golf for decades, winning the County title no fewer than eleven times between 1954 and 1972.

He went on to win the British Amateur five times, the last three in successive years from 1968 to 1970. Among his finalists were Irish legend Joe Carr and American stalwart Bill Hyndman. However his personal favourite was in 1965, when he was six down after twelve holes but fought back to defeat Clive Clark.

His caddy for all his wins was none other than Willie Aitcheson, who carried the bags of Roberto de Vincenzo and Lee Trevino to their Open Championship wins, and he could not have chosen better. As well as his other national titles he had a string of multiple victories in all the major amateur competitions, the Lytham Trophy, Berkshire Trophy, Illustrated Golf Vase, Prince of Wales Challenge Cup, Hampshire Hog, St Georges Grand Challenge. While serving in the RASC he won the Army Championship, and Captained the Army team, and was also a very popular partner in the amateur foursomes events. His game was described as being straight but not particularly long off the tee, but with a great short game, a very good putter, but most of all a wonderful temperament. He remained an amateur throughout his playing career, preferring to work in the family business and enjoy the freedom to play golf.

His international career was spectacular, representing England seventeen times in the Home Internationals, the British Commonwealth team, and in seven World Championships and tied for the individual title in 1968.

He played in the Open Championships more times than many professionals, on thirteen occasions, with the best finish tied 11th at Muirfield in 1959, the year it was won by Gary Player for the first time.

Thanks to his victories in the British Amateur, he was invited to play in The Masters on three occasions, never making the cut but able to enjoy two very special meetings, sitting with Bobby Jones at the Amateurs Dinner, and playing with Ben Hogan, special even for such a Champion himself.

Michael married Angela Ward in 1958, a very successful champion herself, British Girls Champion, English Ladies Champion and a member of six Curtis Cup teams. She played with husband Michael in the Worplesden Mixed Foursomes which they won in 1958.

Michael joined the R&A in 1960, and in the subsequent years served on many committees and in 1983 he was appointed Secretary in succession to Keith Mackenzie, and moved with his family to live in Fife. He held that exalted and very demanding

position for sixteen years, steering the game through a period of great change and advancement, before finally stepping down in 1999. He was immediately nominated as Captain for the Millennium Year.

He was given the award of Honorary Membership of the R&A in 2013, the sixteenth person to receive the invite.

He was knighted by Her Majesty the Queen in her birthday honours list in in 1998, having previously received the OBE. A recognition not only of his playing career, but of his enormous contribution to the game of golf in all its aspects, and the ultimate accolade.

He has served in virtually every arena, and been recognised with awards in all of them, Golf Writers, Course Architects, Greenkeepers, Club Managers, Charities, PGA, The European Tour, the Golf Foundation, English Golf and still holds positions and serves the game to this day. The great golfer progressed to be an even greater Administrator.

His induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame came in the year 2000, for his Lifetime Achievement in Golf, it was the perfect reward for one of the greatest ambassadors of the game.

He joined the RAF as a national Serviceman and won the RAF championship twice and played in winning teams in two inter-Service championships.

He later went to Oxford where he gained a golfing Blue, before winning his county championship a record six times. He was county captain, played for the county team for 20 years and also twice won the Golf Illustrated Vase.

Defending champion Julie Brown defied the weather to stage an action replay and become number one seed for the matchplay stages of the English senior women’s championship at Woodhall Spa. She ignored more strong winds and a finalhole downpour to score one-over par 73 on the Bracken course – and achieve her first goal of this championship.

Last year, when making her debut in senior golf, Brown was also top qualifier and she was determined to repeat the feat this time round.

She managed it by a shot, pipping second seed Lindsey Shaw (Chevin) and reviving a friendly rivalry from their junior days.

“Lindsey was Derbyshire and I was Staffordshire and we played each other for years,” said Brown (Trentham), who went on to become a winner on the Ladies European Tour before reverting to amateur status.

Continuing the saga of a late-convert golfer’s search for glory on the greens. . .

THESE days I walk straight past the small garden shed. It is never opened.

I call it the Shed of Shame.

In there, if you were foolish enough to open it, you would find enough kit to equip every player from Margate to Lyndhurst.

Golf kit is almost more interesting than the game itself. It’s now getting to the point where I spend more time buying stuff then I do playing.

I mean, what are you supposed to do when a pal at Cowdray is selling a set of Callaway irons for £40?

I met a woman at a party in Shoreham who offered me a Ping putter, which cost her over £100, for £20.

Ben let me have a go with his Cobra threewood with the offset head and the ball was last seen high over Guildford.

I’m thinking of starting a Golfers’ Anonymous

It is terrifying the way this game seeps into every aspect of daily life. Without going into too much detail, I know one golf-widow who says she is suing a Brighton club for restitution of conjugal rights.

It never did it again.

Bags?

I’ve got more bags than Joan Collins.

Perhaps it’s just as well, because it gave me somewhere to put all these unwanted clubs.

Then there was my love affair with Adams.

They ought to be called Eve’s, so tempting are they. I’m not even prepared to discuss

And then, of course, I pushed the packed bags into the Shed of Shame, locked it and walked away.

I paid him there and then - £38.

We can all sympathise. With her husband, I mean, not her. As we know, all that heavy breathing can play hell with your swing. But it’s the way the kit piles up that gets me.

My car used to be a family car, but these days I can only just squeeze in.

My golf bag – the current one, that is - lies across the back seat.

The electric trolley is in the boot, along with the whole lot from waterproofs to plastic tees in the approximate shape of Barbara Windsor.

I try to stop it spreading into the house but I know I’ve failed when I hear a heavy sigh from the woman whom I honoured with my name and later find a wedge sticking out of the dustbin.

I realised how bad it had got on a recent trip to London when I dipped my hand into my pocket to find a tip for a cab driver.

He was less than grateful when he l ooked down and saw a ball-marker for West Hove. By his reaction, I took it he was a non-golfer.

I’m thinking of starting a Golfers’ Anonymous. Whenever a golfer is tempted to buy more kit, I’ll go and sit with him until the feeling passes.

Actually, I’ll probably buy it myself.

86th County Championship, Knighton Heath Golf Club What a change from last year, the County Championships, now held over three days instead of four, were played in glorious warm and sunny weather.

The Monday saw the Championship field tee off in the morning for the first of their two qualifying rounds. The handicap limit being from 0 – 12. These were followed by the Johnstone Cup entries, being handicaps between 13 - 20, who played their 18 hole qualifier. The Gross 36 Hole winner of the Ivy Carroll Cup being Jane Southcombe (Yeovil) with Harriett Teversham (also from Yeovil) winner of the Carter Bowl for the Nett 36 Holes. The Gross 18 hole qualifier, winning

the Threlfall Cup, was Tracy Bryant who also won the Nett trophy, the Sugden Salver.

The first rounds of the knockout stages, for both the Championship and the Johnstone Cup were played on Tuesday morning with the quarter finals being played in the afternoon. Congratulations to Jane Southcombe, Chloe Stanley, Melissa McMahon and Harriet Teversham for making the semi-finals of the Championship and Alison Carter, Patricia Watson, Suzanne George and Sandi Stott for making the semifinals of the Johnstone Cup. Wednesday was another lovely sunny day and the Johnstone Cup semi-finalists teed off at 9am followed

The finals were played in good spirit, the Johnstone Cup winner being Sandi Stott after a very exciting match. Chloe fought hard but Melissa McMahon was in excellent form and was a worthy winner and is County Champion for 2015. Many congratulations to you all.

The Silver Spring Challenge was also played on the last day. This 18 hole competition is for handicaps 0 – 20 and was very well supported . The winner of the best gross score was Tracy Bazell and the best nett winner was Mary Pryor.

So how do these guys maintain composure in times of immense pressure. To see someone play with such ease and look chilled out yet be so determined is an inspiration to so many golfers. Let’s not take anything away from Garcia (whose 44ft putt on 17 was just awe inspiring) and Kinsner who also had moments of sheer brilliance. It's just that Ricky has something rather special.

Butch Harmon (his coach) talked in the commentary box ,during the previous week’s tournament, about how Ricky had been penned as one of the most overrated players in some critics opinions (along with our very own Ian Poulter). I am pretty certain that Butch himself will have played a part in getting Ricky fired up to prove those critics wrong. What a way to do it!!

So let’s talk focus for a second. How on earth do you keep your cool enough to just hit grass on that 17th hole let alone get the ball close enough to make a birdie (which may I point out Ricky did 3 times on that final day to clinch the title getting it closer each time).

Hang on a second, 17 at Sawgrass is like any other par 3 isn't it? There's a tee and a green.

Regardless of what is surrounding the putting surface. It’s just a shot that has to go at a target. If you stood with a bucket of balls on a driving range with no hazards between you and a flag I guarantee you would FEEL very different. Therein lies the problem. Most players struggle to fiocus on where they DO want their ball to go and instead let all the trouble jump up and down in their heads making so much noise that they can’t think clearly or swing fluidly. Everything gets jerky and stiff and many times the ball ends up exactly where you didn’t want it to.

How can you quieten your mind and swing it more fluidly? Here are a few tips which will help you swing it with ease on that knee trembling tee shot.

Check out what’s behind the green. At Sawgrass’ 17th you have a bunch of really tall trees, some grandstands and big camera towers behind the water which encapsulates the island green. Something I've always told pupils is that focusing on a target high up behind where you want your ball to go will help you to avoid too much eye contact with any trouble that may lurk between you and your target. At Cowdray we are lucky enough to have the South Downs with various fields to aim at on the horizon. At Hamptworth the beautiful trees act as fantastic backdrop targets. Wherever you play your golf pick a distinctive target and make it easier to visualise your ball flying high (a good shot) towards this then dropping down on your intended target.

In the last couple of Tee Times I have made comparisons of the “one” and the “two” plane swing.

TO RECAP ON THIS INFORMATION: In the one plane swing the arms swing somewhat around the body.

At the top of the backswing the shoulders and the arms are at the same angle.

Fortunately for Jim he has the combination of the two swing types that works very well.

He gets to the top of the backswing in a very upright position and then during the downswing he drops the club into a very shallow position.

At impact his body is unwound and the shaft of the club is quite low.

Practising pressure shots such as this is tricky but what I would say is, that as the evenings are at their lightest, take yourself out on the course and just practice playing shots whilst aiming, focusing and swinging smoothly without any pressure. Once you see a few of your shots ending up in satisfying places you can then visualise yourself hitting decent shots when a scorecard is in your hand. If time does not allow you to leisurely stroll out and play a few holes, then on the driving range try picking horizon targets. Make every practice shot mean something. Do this for tee shots and approach shots too.

Pre-shot routine plays a huge part in this and it's worth working on this during playing lessons with your professional. There is nothing like being taught out on the course you play your golf. So ask the pro shop what packages are available.

Congratulations to Ricky Fowler and make sure you watch the golf on TV if you can and get inspired but also notice their pre-shot routines, how they react to poor shots, how they carry themselves around the course etc and take what you can to apply to your own game. In the two plane swing, the arms swing on a more upright plane than the shoulders; the shoulders are generally flatter than in a one plane swing.

There is also a big difference between the one and two plane swing in the impact area.

In the classic one plane swing, the face of the club is square to the arc well before and after the hit. This makes it easier to hit the ball consistently straight.

The two plane swing is quite different; the club is square to the arc for a very short time indeed, making the consistently straight ball nearly impossible.

This means that the golfer with a two plane swing has to shape the ball to be consistent.

There is another category of swing that is a blend of the one and two plane actions. Let’s call it a Hybrid. Many great golfers are Hybrids.

One who immediately springs to mind is Jim Furyk. He has a very two plane backswing but has the impact of a one plane swing.

Guess that’s why he hits it so consistently straight and has been a top performer for so many years.

Notice how quickly the club has moved left with little face rotation after impact!!

The combination that can be potentially disastrous is that of having a flat one plane type backswing and a two plane impact - the two plane swing at impact has a more upright shaft and lots of clubface rotation.

A golfer with this combination had better have plenty of balls in the bag, as pushes, duck hooks, thins, fats and shanks could be the order of the day.

If the downswing was very steep he could also be a slicer.
