Now his focus switches to the Masters at Augusta, a debut invitation secured by his English Championship triumph. Gregory took the Australian title at the end of a superb, allEngland final against Marco Penge. The 22year-old edged home with a 1-up win on the 36th hole of a remarkable match which saw many holes won or halved in birdie. Gregory took charge early on and was four up after 18 holes. But Penge, who was still four down with 11 holes to play, staged a determined fightback, picking away at the lead and getting back to all square after 32 holes. The players matched shot for shot until the 35th where Gregory holed a 25footer for par and a one-up lead; then his par on the last gave him the title.

Tiger: I’ll never feel great again TIGER Woods says he will ‘never feel great’ again because of golfing injuries. The 14-time Major winner is now 41, and pulled out of the Dubai Desert Classic before the second round this because of a back spasm, having returned to action in December after two back operations. Injuries and an implosion of his personal life stopped him in his tracks at 14 Majors as he chased Jack Nicklaus’ all-time record of 18. Woods, who has won 79 titles on the PGA Tour and still hopes to compete at next month’s Masters at Augusta, told Dubai magazine Vision: ‘There have been plenty of times when I
thought I would never play the game again at the elite level. It was tough, it was more than brutal. There were times I needed help just to get out of bed. I feel good, not great. I don't think I will ever feel great because it's three back surgeries, four knee operations. ‘I'm always going to be a little bit sore. As long as I can function, I'm fine with that.’ Woods has not won a tournament anywhere since 2013, while his title drought in Majors dates back to 2008.
‘There is a changing of the guard,’ he said. ‘My generation is getting older but if I'm teeing up, then the goal is to win.’

MUIRFIELD members will have another vote on whether women can be admitted to the club. Run by The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, the privately owned links held a vote last year following a two-year consultation process, The proposal to allow women into the club fell short of the majority needed to change membership policy. Motions require two thirds of eligible voters to back the move and only 64 per cent voted in favour – ten votes short. The result of a new ballot is expected early this month.

As McIlroy and Tiger Woods were forced out of tournaments by injury, Open champion Stenson warned young players of the need to prepare their bodies for the strain caused by modern techniques. McIlroy, whose swing has been measured at 120mph, recently suffered a stress fracture to a rib which put him on the sidelines, nursing hopes of being able to return at the WGC event in Mexico this month. Stenson himself has gone through a series of injuries in the recent past as have Jason Day, the world No1, and the Olympic champion, Hampshire’s Justin Rose.

on. You’ve got to watch it. The advice I would give to the next generation is make sure you work hard from the beginning on your fitness. A lot of guys do, not everyone; it doesn’t show up normally when you’re 20 or 25. It comes at a later stage. That’s when you’re paying for the wear and tear and a very one-sided motion that we do.
Stenson told The Guardian newspaper: ‘You see how hard Jason and Rory go after it. Not that I necessarily just pat it myself, but they really go after it and that’s going to put a lot of pressure on knees, back and neck, and so

A lot of the young guys continue to get hurt as they create this violent, connected movement and I don’t believe that that’s the proper way to swing the club.
‘Hopefully, kids will swing the club with less of a violent body movement and be able to play for a lifetime.’
Mr Trump had promised to resign from directorships in all his companies to avoid claims of conflict of interest. Amid all the uproar ignited by presidential decrees during his first few days in office, his eldest sons Donald Jr and Eric have taken over control of golf resorts in Aberdeenshire and Ayrshire, which are two of the 17 courses Mr Trump owns round the world. He also stepped down from DT Connect Europe Ltd, which operates the Trump helicopter based at Prestwick airport. The copter has been used to transport Mr Trump's family and guests between the two courses.

OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE COMMUNITY GOLF CENTRE
Lee-on-the-Solent Golf Club is pleased to announce the official opening of the Community Golf Centre on Sunday 9th April 2017. There is a new 5-hole purpose built practice course specifically designed with young beginner golfers in mind. The aim is to provide affordable taster golf to young people in the local community and to give them the opportunity through sponsored professional coaching to learn the game of golf, without being intimidated and over awed by the size of the main course. This project has been ongoing for nearly four years and we are very pleased that both Fareham and Gosport Borough councils have supported the funding required to develop this centre. It seems a long time ago that the land was in use as a horse field, then reclaimed and developed into a 5-hole layout. Hammond Memorial Hall Trust have also supported the funding of the 5 tees, utilising artificial grass from Huxley Grass in Alresford. Several sponsors have also supported the development. Snows BMW Portsmouth will provide support for professional coaching, especially through school holidays and PJ Drew (Engravers) Ltd Signs and Graphics have provided all the tee markers and safety signage required. The Lady Captains charity raised over ÂŁ4,000 last year to support elements of the project, especially the construction of a safety shed to be used when inclement weather is forecast.
Jack Coulbert and Martin Adams are just a few that spring to mind. The Golf Club wishes to reenergise the Junior Section and this new facility will offer the chance to any youngster wishing to try this sport. A series of taster sessions will start throughout the school Easter period and continue through the summer. Beginner adults will also have access to the facility when available. Junior FREE taster sessions will be running this Easter Half Term Mon 10th, Wed 12th, Wed 19th and Fri 21st April
All these sessions will run from 10am to 2pm and will be run by PGA qualified Professionals. Please call the Professional Shop on 023 9255 1170 extension 2 to book. (Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis). Following on from this we will be offering a free one hour session to any children who would like to attend the Community Golf Scheme. We will then be running structured six week courses to mirror term times with activity days in the holidays. These will be one hour sessions and throughout each course we will concentrate on all aspects of the game putting, chipping, pitching, bunker play, iron play, fairway woods and driving. We would also like to start to work on knowledge of the rules with the children as well as playing the NEW Community Course. We are looking to create a pathway for all ages and abilities from their starting point in golf to becoming a member of the Golf Club with an official handicap. WHERE TO STAY FOR A GOLF HOLIDAY IN MAURITIUS The golf specialists at Chaka Travel have been tailor making golf holidays to Mauritius for 21 years now which gives them plenty of knowledge on where is best to spend your time on this wonderful island. Their top golf specialist for Mauritius (Stuart Thompson) had the pleasure of visiting for his second time in 12 months just to make sure the recent renovations at the five star Constance Belle Mare Plage were up to the “Chaka” standard for their clients! Have a read of what Stuart thought. It was a lovely surprise to find out that I was heading back to Mauritius again after only being there 4 months earlier. The reason for this visit was to see the newly refurbished Belle Mare Plage Hotel. Day 1 - As I left a cold but surprisingly dry Belfast and headed to Heathrow to meet the rest of the group, I was wondering how you could improve a hotel that was already very good within 4 months! The flight to Mauritius goes from London via Dubai and as a tall man (6 ft 4 inches) I have to say that the Emirates A380 is one of the best economy class seats I have flown in. The aircraft has a great choice of entertainment as well as plenty of leg room, and even with the stopover the journey seemed to take no time. After the short drive to the hotel we arrived at the lovely new reception area, where I was immediately able to notice the improvements. We were taken to the bar area and went through the new check in procedure which was very streamlined and relaxed. We were then taken for lunch to the La Kaze restaurant for a superb lunch until our rooms where ready.

of nightcaps. Then it was off to bed as we had an early tee off time the following morning. Day 2 - Up early for breakfast and feeling slightly better after a good night’s sleep, we headed to the Legends golf course. Again it was great to see the new changes that they had made to the bar to brighten it up, but it was the course I was most interested in, as when I was there in May the greens had been destroyed and the course was not in good condition. However this time the course was in fantastic condition as even with a little top dressing the greens were running brilliantly. Furthermore the changes they had made on each hole made this a great experience for me as I shot a gross 79! We had the obligatory beer and marked the cards before we met up with the others for a rum cocktail prior to boarding the hotel’s catamaran. The catamaran is a new purchase for the hotel and if you are staying there with a couple of friends this is a must. They take you out into the ocean where you can snorkel and see the marine life. Then after getting back on board you are treated to a wonderful barbecue with beers while going for a sail.
Once in the new Junior Suite I was amazed to see the changes that they had made with the room; from the vibrant new colour concept to the outside furniture and of course the new bathroom. We didn’t have a lot of time before we headed for a relaxing spa treatment to get over the long journey which we had undertaken.
We had a little time to ourselves after a busy day - so for me that meant a relaxing swim and then a rest at the pool before the organised wine tasting at the Blue Penny Restaurant. Again this is another new activity which the resort offers; and if you like your fine wine and food then it’s a must as it was a fantastic experience followed by a top class meal.
It was a quick change before the group met up that evening and headed to the Deerhunter for a gin making class. I have to say this was excellent as I would never have dreamed of some of the ingredients we added to the gin! Dinner that night was in my favourite restaurant - La Spiaggia - and again it did not disappoint with another fantastic meal followed by a couple
Day 3 - We all headed to the Deerhunter Restaurant for a traditional Mauritian breakfast which was very different but wonderful to taste the difference compared to the European style that we are used to. After breakfast it was off to the Links course for a quick round as we needed to move from the Constance Belle Mare Plage to Constance Le Prince Maurice hotel. It

was sad to leave the Belle Mare Plage as we had only really just settled in, but with the hotel being full it had to be done and to be honest there is no better place than Le Prince Maurice. Upon arrival we were greeted with the usual champagne welcome before being whisked off to the wine cellar to meet Jerome. Jerome is a person you could listen to all day when he talks about wine and how passionate he is about it! He walked us through his cellar with some of the bottles costing 28,000 euro!! I didn’t want to touch that bottle, but he did introduce us to the resort with the signature opening of a champagne bottle with a sword. I know it sounds dangerous but it was really good fun and of course you get sample the champers! It was supposed to be a light late lunch as we had been booked in for yoga later that afternoon. I knew the yoga was going to be interesting but it was all very good fun even if it was a little embarrassing! That night we met up for pre-dinner drinks on the floating bar, and this was a lovely experience as you are sitting on the lagoon with clear bright skies and watching the world go by, before we headed to the floating restaurant for dinner. Day 4 - It was lovely to enjoy a lazy morning where we didn’t have to be somewhere early and could enjoy the breakfast and some downtime. The guys decided to join in on a culinary morning and become pastry chefs which was really good fun. We had a lovely lunch in the Asian restaurant before having a relaxing massage and then checking out the tennis facilities. It was our last evening on the island and the hotel had set up a beach barbecue for us which was extra special. We were served delicious fresh fish and meat along with the excellent wine picked by Jerome. He was like a magician
and appeared from nowhere while we were eating and even on the beach was no problem to him! The evening finished off with a local Mauritian band and a few night caps. Day 5 - Last morning in paradise and after breakfast we got to try water skiing. This was going to be fun as it was an activity I had never tried before and is something I had always wanted to do! Having tried it I found it was both exciting and enjoyable; although it certainly puts a lot of strain on the arms! I would certainly love to do it again. After a bite of lunch we headed back to the airport for the flight home. As a summary on the Belle Mare Plage Hotel it was great to see all the new features in the hotel. If you have been before you must go again, as it will be a totally different experience than last time. LEGENDS OF THE GAME... WILLIE ANDERSON JNR- THE FIRST TRIPLE CHAMPION One of the problems about comparing golfers of differing eras is the totally changing quality of the clubs, balls and the condition of the golf courses, but a more subtle difference is that of the social perception of the game. In the late 1890’s Great Britain was already establishing its golfing heroes. Allan Robertson, and the Great Triumvirate of Taylor, Braid and Vardon, were all wellknown and respected, whereas across the Atlantic, the game was very much in its infancy, and in many parts of the country was not known at all.. Many of the golf professionals endeavouring to alter this situation were Scots who had emigrated to the United States in the hope of building a better life, with greater security and decent income. William Law Anderson was one such you man, who left the shores of his native Scotland in 1895 at the tender age of 17 years; he travelled west with his father who had been the greenkeeper at North Berwick, in East Lothian. When he arrived in the States, he took a club job in Rhode Island in New England, it would be the first of ten golf clubs where he would work at in his fourteen years living in America. Willie Anderson was a sturdily built young man with huge hands, and what was described as a St Andrews swing, but he was a very accurate golfer, and his strength on the course was recognised to be his very calm demeanour, which was to serve him well as he made his numerous challenges for the major championships. Whatever his special abilities were, he became the first dominant player in American golf, and he is the only player to win the Open with two different balls, the gutta percha and the rubber cored golf ball. At the time he arrived in America there were only two significant tournaments, the US Open and the Western Open, and Willie Anderson would go on to win each one on four occasions, and he is still the only player to have won three consecutive US Open Championships, in 1903, 1904 and again in 1905. He had had his first Open success two years earlier in 1901. His record in the championship had been very consistent, starting with a second place in 1897 and third the following year, then he was 5th in 1899. His first winning Open in 1901 was played at the Myopia Hunt Club in Massachusetts, the previous year it had been won by Harry Vardon while on his US Tour. Willie was tied after 72 holes and in the subsequent play off against Alex Smith he
was trailing by five shots with five holes to play, he finished with a remarkable run of five straight fours and won by a single shot. Willie was also prominent in promoting the status of the professional players, and like Walter Hagen many years later, he objected to inferior treatment, in his case, to dining in the club kitchen, and his protests resulted in a marquee being erected on the Myopia club’s lawn for the Pro’s to dine. The following year he finished in a creditable 5th place behind fellow Scot Laurie Auchterlonie, who shot four sub 80 rounds for the very first time using the new Haskell golf ball, the ball that was to change the level of scoring in the game so dramatically. His record of three successive US Open victories began at Baltusrol in New Jersey in 1903, when after another play off, this time against David Brown he took the trophy. The following year at Glen View Illinois he won by five shots and he completed his hat trick of wins when the event returned to the Myopia Hunt Club in 1905. His record overall was amazing, with top ten finishes eleven times out of the thirteen events he played.

In addition to his four Open Championship he also won the prestigious Western Open on four occasions between 1902 and 1909 further underlining his consistency and the quality of his golf in that period. In 1908 he broke the record for the event with a 72 hole total of 299, a score he was to smash the following year. His last win in the Western Open came at the Skokie Country Club, Illinois in 1909, when he took the title with a record score of 288, and a winning margin of nine shots, over a high quality field, many of whom were also ex patriot Scots. He was famous for his many challenge matches and exhibition matches all played for money. He endorsed the Worthington golf clubs and his were the first autographed clubs to be marketed. His practising techniques wrere copied by many golfers of the day, in particular hitting balls with eyes closed, in fact Willie used to hit 200 balls wearing a blindfold.

After his passing, the amateur golfer Chick Evans Jnr in collaboration with Mr C B Lloyd of the Goodrich Compamy organised events to raise money for his widow. He will be remembered for his enduring quotation:
“To think of nothing while engaged in golf is the secret to success” A modest man, who never boasted and let his clubs do the talking; he was a founder member of the PGA Hall of Fame and he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1975, promoted by Pinehurst, due recognition for a legendary golfer who tragically died too young to extend his record of successes.
His death came suddenly the following year in 1910 at the young age of 31, struck down by either arteriosclerosis or epilepsy, and

Special four-page report on landmark date for a premier Hampshire golf club
Petersfield celebrates its 125th anniversary THE first documented evidence of Petersfield Golf Club was published in 1891, in a most tucked-away place. In the Petersfield Weekly News, there was a passing reference buried in a report of the local cricket club’s AGM. The article stated: “The next business was to consider an offer from the Petersfield Golf Club, in regard to the use of the pavilion, with roller and mowing machine. It was stated that many members of the Golf Club were also members of the Cricket Club, and therefore could not be refused the right of using the pavilion.
“This fact, the Chairman suggested, should tend to reduce the charge to the Golf Club.” The golf club’s offer of three guineas to use the cricket club’s facilities was duly accepted. Two splendid Victorian Gentlemen, Lothian Bonham-Carter and John Perkin, headmaster of Castle House School in the Square, had formally introduced golf to Petersfield. During the winter months of 1890-91, they laid out a nine-hole course on the northern part of the Heath. This was land owned, and provided as a public recreation ground, by John Bonham-Carter, Lothian’s elder brother and Lord of the Manor of Mapledurham (the original name for the parish and manor of Buriton). These days, Petersfield boasts two excellent courses. Adhurst is an 18 hole Members’ Club, set in an area of outstanding natural beauty, nestling beneath the South Downs. South Petersfield is a 12 hole pay and play, which was part of the original Petersfield Golf Club course, prior to the Members’ club move to Adhurst in 1997. Petersfield Golf Club will mark its 125th anniversary with a series of special events – and has even more plans to keep itself at the forefront of golfing excellence in the south of England.

Prominent people in Petersfield’s past: LOTHIAN BONHAM-CARTER IT would be hard to imagine a more important person in the history of Petersfield Golf Club than Lothian George Bonham-Carter. Lothian founded the club in 1891 with John Perkin, was a committee member from day one and, as president, steered the club through some of the most tumultuous years in its history. He was born in 1858 at Adhurst St Mary, little more than half a mile from the club’s home today. Lothian served briefly in the Army from 1876 to 1880 and inherited the family estate – including the land on the Heath used by by the golf club – following the suicide of his elder brother John in December, 1905. He also replaced John as club president, a role he held until his death on January 1, 1927.

Golf wasn’t Lothian’s only forte. He also played cricket for Hampshire as a right-handed batsman and slow roundarm bowler. Lothian was the first of the BonhamCarters to begin the family connection with the village of Buriton, running the Manor Farm with its renowned hop cultivation and regular pheasant and rabbit shoots. He and his wife Emily later had Buriton House built in 1910-11. The Bonham-Carter dynasty was said to be descended from William the
There was more family tragedy for the Bonham-Carters during the First World War. Lothian’s cousin, Guy, was killed in action near Ypres on May 14, 1915, aged 30. He was a Captain in the 19th Royal Hussars and Adjutant, Oxfordshire Yeomanry, and was buried at Vlamertinghe. On July 1 the following year Lothian’s stepbrother, Arthur Thomas, a Captain in the Hampshire Regiment, died at Beaumont Hamel on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Aged 47, he was buried in Serre Road Cemetery No. 2. It is a sobering thought that every single Hampshire Regiment officer who fought on the first day of the Somme was either killed or wounded.

Prominent people in Petersfield’s past: THE HAMPSHIRE CLUB THAT LORDS OF JUST KEEPS RAISING THE BAR THE MANOR IN 1914, you could catch a steam train to Midhurst which puffed its way along an embankment beside Herne Farm, which was just that…a farm, rather than a large housing estate. The population of Petersfield was about 4,000, compared with nearly 14,000 today, and for many of them the average wage for a basic 58-hour working week was 16sh 9d. The first week of 1914 provided two stories of local interest. The first came on January 7, when the Urban District Council’s seal was finally affixed to the mortgage deed to buy the Heath for the town – a saga which had started in 1910. The Heath was under the ownership of three people – Lord Hylton, Lord of the Manor of Petersfield, Lothian BonhamCarter, Lord of the Manor of Mapledurham (Buriton), and Mr Bennion, who had bought ‘Sootyfield’ from Magdalen College, Oxford. The Lords of the Manor were obliged to provide public access to the Heath for recreation and Lothian had formed Petersfield Golf Club with John Perkin in 1891. His elder brother John had been Lord of the Manor at the time, so building a course on the Heath was never an issue! The Lords agreed to sell their parts of the Heath covering the pond and recreation ground to Petersfield Urban District Council, Lothian stipulating that the interests of the golf club should be preserved. Terms were agreed, with the council paying £642 to Hylton and £400 to Bonham-Carter. It was another 13 years before Mr Bennion agreed to sell Sootyfield. That same week in January, 1914, demolition work began on Castle House, now the site of the Post Office in The Square – regarded by some even then as an act of cultural vandalism. Petersfield Golf Club’s co-founders both had connections with the Tudor mansion. The Bonham-Carter family had lived there before Lothian was born and Perkin had been headmaster of Castle House School.
PETERSFIELD Golf Club is naturally and proudly looking back on its history over a century and a quarter. But at the same time, it is also lifting its eyes to the future. Although a grand series of anniversary events is planned for this year, alongside expansion of its activities for members and visitors, General Manager Shaun Manning says: ‘History is important, of course, but we are looking ahead too.’ Above: The eye-catching (and sometimes ball-catching) lake on the Adhurst course at Petersfield. Major improvements to the Adhurst, the big brother of the club’s two courses, have already been put in place over the last 18 months. The drainage has been improved noticeably, and the proof is in the daily ‘course condition’ bulletin on the club’s website where, even in the depths of winter, it says Yes to buggies and Yes to trollies.‘We have eradicated a lot of muddy places and improved the make-up of the course generally,’ said Mr Manning.
‘We have basically reshaped the course. The rough has been taken back to a level where it is playable for everyone. By that, I mean we now have a first and second cut which means that if your ball strays, it doesn’t automatically mean that it’s probably lost. We have also done a lot of tree work.

Hickman, has built a raft of events around the prestigious Wishart tournament, the Hampshire Order of Merit Event which has been held at Petersfield since 1934. This year it is in August. A spectator gantry will be built for the first time, and the club is hopeful that legendary TV golf commentator Peter Alliss will be there for the prize-giving.
Prominent dates in Petersfield’s past: THE WAR YEARS THE government introduced conscription in 1916 as the war dragged on. A conflict that many British people in 1914 had cheerily predicted would be over by Christmas reached new depths of horror with the Battle of the Somme. Adhurst St Mary, where Lothian Bonham-Carter, Petersfield Golf Club’s co-founder and president was born, was one of several local mansions used as hospitals to help treat the high volume of casualties returning to England from the Western Front. Unsurprisingly, there is no mention of the club itself in the Hants and Sussex News in 1916. The Petersfield Golf Club minute book reveals that a committee meeting held on February 24 at The Capital and Counties Bank was adjourned until further notice as ‘there was present only the Hon Sec’. The AGM went ahead but ‘in the absence of the Hon Treasurer who had unfortunately been summoned away by telegram….’ In March 1917, after members had doubled their annual subscription to help boost funds, the club gave up its grazing

rights to the council in return for a nominal rent of one guinea and an undertaking to repair the greens. The council advertised the grazing rights and accepted a tunder of £32 from a Mr Aylwin. Despite paying only a peppercorn rent, the club found tending the greens was still beyond its means and in September 1917 the council agreed to accept the responsibility of keeping them in order. They would be cut two days a week at five shillings a day by Mr Tull ‘to prevent them going to ruin’, which would be ‘disastrous’. The club might have expired in all but name, but the clubhouse was still put to use. In May an ‘athletic sports day’ was held on the Heath for the men of the Army Service Corps quartered in Petersfield. The Hants and Sussex News reported : ‘Tea was provided for the ladies (officers’ wives, townspeople etc) in the golf pavilion’. The clubhouse, still in use today as a nursery, was opened on Monday, June 6, 1904. It cost between £300 and £400 and was built by Messrs Mould and Son from plans by the renowned local architect E. Arden Minty.

Prominent people in Petersfield’s past: ADMIRAL SIR SYDNEY FREMANTLE SYDNEY Robert Fremantle, a member of Petersfield Golf Club, was caught up in one of the most infamous incidents to occur following the end of World War one – the scuttling of the German Fleet at Scapa Flow. The sea was in Sydney’s blood. His father, Sir Edmund Robert Fremantle GCB CMG (18361929), enjoyed a distinguished Royal Navy career and became Commander-in-Chief, Plymouth. Born in 1867, Sydney is recorded as being Captain of HMS Victory and Presidents of the Signal Committee at Portsmouth in 1912. He was promoted to Rear Admiral the following year. He and his wife were elected members of Petersfield Golf Club at the committee meeting of February 26, 1914. Their address appeared in the minutes as Wardown, Buriton.
The anniversary is also being supported by popular BBC presenter Naga Munchetty, a keen and able golfer herself. There are also new events for club captains, lady captains and an innovation which has attracted a lot of support: a mixed captains tournament.
The huge success of the club’s Flexible Membership scheme has encouraged the club to come up with plans to improve ladies’ and junior golf, including ladies’ clinics and even Footgolf on the Adhurst’s sister course, the 12 hole South Petersfield pay and play.
Every player taking part in anniversary events will receive a sleeve of the speciallydesigned 125 logo balls.
While Peterfield’s past is unquestionably distinguished and is rightly being celebrated full throttle this year, the club is using the
pride of 125 years of progress as a launchpad for many more positive years ahead. Maurice Hickman’s committee has drawn up a comprehensive and unique programme of events to mark the club’s 125th anniversary, running through May to September. Details of the Anniversary Programme are on the following page.
Stuart Bonham-Carter was voted in as a member at the same meeting. No doubt the Royal Navy and Buriton connections played a part in introducing the Fremantles to the club. Sydney soon made his mark with golf club in hand, winning the President’s Cup at the Easter Meeting of 1914 – the first major club event to take place on the now councilowned Heath. • Turn to following page
Prominent people in Petersfield’s past: ALGERNON BONHAM-CARTER ALGERNON Bonham-Carter, elder son of Lothian, was wounded in the early weeks of the Great War. A lieutenant in 1st Battalion, King’s Royal Rifle, Algernon was involved in an action near the village of Haute-Avesnes in north-west France. His battalion suddenly came upon a German rearguard of about 1,200 infantry with a battery of field guns. The British soon came under heavy fire. The enemy had taken up a good position along a winding, sunken road.

With an advance across open stubble fields, Lieut Bonham-Carter led the First Platoon into attack. Algernon was one of four British officers injured as The Rifles lost 80 killed . The Germans surrendered after one and a half hours of fighting, and 450 were taken prisoner.

The Hants and Sussex News of September 23, 1914 reported that Lieut Bonham-Carter ‘has been injured (but not seriously)’. The injury was certainly not serious enough to keep him out of action for long and he continued to serve on the Western Front as his battalion took part in battles such as Mons, Ypres, the Ancre and Vimy Ridge. Algernon went on to achieve the rank of Colonel and was awarded the Ditinguished Service Order in 1918.
Back in Petersfield, ‘Algie’ was a very keen golfer and had joined the club in 1907. He was added to the list of vice-presidents at the club’s 1928 AGM. By 1927 he had inherited the Buriton estate following the death of his father, although large tracts of downland were sold to the Forestry Commission to cover death duties. Algernon loved the centuries-old Manor House, spending time restoring and renovating it. He sold Buriton House, which had been built by his father in 1910-11, and the rest of the family estate was sold after he died in 1957 at the age of 89. ‘The Colonel’, remembered locally as ‘a lovely man’, was cremated and his ashes scattered in Pillmead Covers, Buriton, by his brother Admiral Sir Stuart and his head gamekeeper, George Legg senior.

The spacious clubhouse contains a golfers’ bar, dining room and lounge on the first floor and there is ample space to host large functions where over 100 people can wine, dine and dance in comfort.
A full bar service is offered, and there is a menu to suit most tastes. The clubhouse is a popular venue for many visiting societies, weddings and companies, and can be hired at very reasonable rates. Petersfield welcomes visiting societies from other golf clubs, and a large percentage of societies are repeat visitors. Golf Packages can be arranged, starting from the basic bacon rolls and 18 holes, or societies can put their own specific package together.

Fremantle commanded several of Britain’s cruiser squadrons during the conflict and took command of the British Fleet in the Aegean. But he is best remembered for events off the northern coast of Scotland in 1919. One of the terms of the armistice that ended the Great War in November 1918 was the handing over of Germany’s High Seas Fleet to the allies. A total of 74 battleships, cruisers and destroyers, under the command of RearAdmiral Ludwig von Reuter and manned by about 20,000 German seamen, were moved to Scapa Flow in the Orkneys to be interned until the peace arrangements were finalised.
Admiral Fremantle: Accused the enemy of ‘a shameful breach of honour’
Guarding the German fleet was the Royal Navy’s First Battle Squadron, commanded by Fremantle, now a Vice Admiral. The peace conference in Paris dragged on into the summer of 1919. The French and Italians wanted some of the ships for themselves but the Americans did not approve and nor did the British, who wanted them all destroyed. Fremantle planned to take over the German ships the moment the Treaty of Versailles was signed. With news that this had been delayed until June 23, he was ordered to

On the morning of June 21, a beautifully sunny Midsummer’s Day, all Van Reauter’s ships hoisted the German flag and opened all the seacocks, portholes, watertight doors, hatches and torpedo tubes. As the crews – now fewer than 2,000 men – took to lifeboats, the former might of the German Navy began to go down, steam hissing amid vast spouts of water. Fremantle started to receive reports about the scuttling an hour later and immediately turned round the First Battle Squadron to head full steam to Scapa Flow, radioing ahead to order all available craft to prevent the German ships from sinking and beach as many as possible.
Sailors from the few British ships on guard in the harbour did manage to board some of the sinking craft but fighting broke out and nine Germans were shot dead. By the time Fremantle’s fleet arrived back in Scapa Flow, only one of the large ships was left afloat. A total of 52 had been sunk – some of which remain the4re, unsalvaged, to this day and have become popular diving sites. Fremantle accused Van Reuter of’ a shameful breach of honour’. In fact, the German admiral’s actually worked in Britain’s favour. As Admiral Rosslyn Wemyss privately remarked: ‘I look upon the sinking of the fleet as a real blessing. It disposes, once and for all, the thorny question of the redistribution of these ships.’ Promoted to Admiral in 1922, Sydney Robert Fremantle was Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth, from 1923 to 1926. He retired in 1928, having been knighted, and died 30 years later at the age of 90.

How to keep warm and still look cool on the golf course

This February saw Romsey Juniors travelling to Portugal to represent England. The team, who have had a long season, played their way through from the South West Hampshire Junior League to qualify for their opportunity to shine in the Portuguese sun via the Junior England Home Nations tournament. However, their path cannot be described as easy.
Keeping warm on the golf course in the depth of winter is quite an art. Of course, we could all snuggle down and stay at home until Spring but then, most of us, like to get good value from our club membership. As a result, we end up digging out old skiing gear, or investing in warm clothing, to keep ourselves cosy. It’s a fine line between cocooning yourself in multiply layers, bearing in mind padding can add 10lb around the midriff and an extra muffin top isn’t good when you keep bending down. Then there’s the risk of over-cooking like a boil in the bag, although that’s far better than waiting on the tee box with frozen limbs, wondering if you’ll ever be able to feel your hands again. Mind you it’s surprising we even manage to hit the ball with our neurons half frozen. Thankfully the new Hi Tech materials are great despite looking like they’ve been designed to fit a 10 year old. These ‘elastic’ type garment have a tendency to emphasise every bump and lump but they’re great at helping to suck everything in as well as wicking everything away – sadly that doesn’t include cellulite. The key to a good winter survival kit is plugging bodily gaps with anything appropriate to keep bare skin from
suffering from a full gale-force make-over. So, scarves, snoods, woolly hats all come out – anything to keep the body from exposure and avoiding a nasty draught. Walking around a field for over 4 hours and cutting through sodden turf with your clubs, demands proper winter trousers which usually rustle when you walk and frequently flap in the wind. Old winter gloves are re-discovered and usually prove far too baggy and thick to nimbly pick out small tee pegs and markers from a pocket. Then there’s the facial area which benefits from a thick coat of sun cream in the summer but requires an even bigger splodge of moisturiser in the winter to ward off any wind chill factor as well as a large dollop of lip gloss to avoid lips turning into shrivelled prunes. Regardless of how we look or feel, attempting to manoeuvre a golf ball over temporary greens still remains one of the best excuses for bad golf in the winter. Well, ‘flog’ is golf spelt backwards

The quarter-finals were held at Trethorne GC in Cornwall, which is undoubtedly a beautiful setting… in the summer. On this occasion, the players had to battle with howling winds and torrential rain. It was awful, but the matches continued and how all the juniors kept going I don’t know. After being announced that Romsey had finished 2nd to Weymouth, a recheck of the cards showed that we had actually won! Therefore it was only fair that the organisers allowed both Weymouth and Romsey Teams to progress to the semi-final at China Fleet GC, Devon. The team once again travelled to the West Country for the same format, but in much better conditions. Nerves were stretched from the start when scratch player Owen Grimes hit his ball out of bounds off the first! He recovered magnificently and the rest of the team, which included George Nicholson-Jack, Katie Biddlecombe, Harry Ball, Aaron Danson & Josh Hannam all played brilliantly to secure victory, which in the end, was only decided on the last match. Now off to The Junior Team Golf, England National Final at Studley Wood, Oxfordshire. After finding out that the date for this was only a few weeks away in the October half term, panic set in as the teams gross player Owen Grimes was booked to go on his Grandads 80th Birthday Holiday in Tenerife the weekend of the final! After speaking with his grandad who is great supporter of his grandson and the Romsey Team, Owen and his Dad changed their flights to fly out 4 days later. The team was up against respresntatives from other regions of the UK. The whole event was covered by Sky Sports with all teams giving interviews along with their junior organisers. Romsey Junior Organiser Geraldine Pringle , Junior Captian George Nicholson-Jack and Katie Biddlecombe stepped up for their interviews and did Romsey
proud. After team photos had been taken it was time for the match. This time Owen Grimes had no issues off the first and hit a perfect tee shot they were off. There were once again some fabulous performances. After a very tense and nervous wait it was Cuddington that won with a total of 357, Beadlow Manor 363 and Romsey 365. It was only the top two to qualify and Romsey were so disappointed to miss out by 2 shots. Utterly heartbreaking for the team. Well done to Cuddington and Beadlow Manor who will now go on to represent England against Wales, Scotland and Ireland in Portugal in February. That could have been where the story ended but… Some weeks later, whilst doing her weekly shop, Geraldine Pringle received a phone call from David Last the organiser of the Junior Home Nations tournament inviting Romsey as well as another Welsh team who also finished third to also represent England and Wales as two teams had to pull out of the competition. As you can imagine this was a bit of a shock, especially as this was mid December and the final which is to be held at the Morgado Golf resort in Portugal was in February! After many discussions with players, parents and the Romsey GC Captain Terry Sharp, it was decided that this was too good an opportunity to miss, especially as they had missed out by only two shots in the England Finals. So with ongoing fund raising, parents and club members support Romsey Golf Club Juniors have now had the opportunity to represent England. Not bad for a small club in Romsey! The Juniors led by Junior Organiser Geraldine Pringle & assistant Tracy Grimes would like to thank Makoy Ltd, the Past Captains, Seniors and Ladies sections, all members of Romsey GC, management, bar & catering staff as well as the Pro Shop for their generous donations and amazing support. Last of all, thank you to all the parents who have given up weekends to travel round the country and especially to Tom Grimes (for driving the team bus and last minute on the spot coaching), Andy Pringle & Barry Nicholson for all that they do for the Team. Have Clubs Will Travel BUENAVISTA GOLF - ISLA BAJA Tenerife has long been a favourite destination for winter golf, within a relatively short flight time, wonderful weather when northern Europe is cold and damp, and offering a selection of Michael Rees some of the finest courses to be found. The south coast is the popular tourist destination, thanks to the location of the major airport, and it is quite naturally home to the majority of the courses, however two locations offer something extra special, and both will be explored on the visit this year. Buenavista Golf, the first, is located in the north west of the island, in a region called Isla Baja, a spectacularly beautful area recognised as a national treasure, a rural park which covers one of the oldest geographical areas, the Teno massif, which forms an imposing and striking backdrop of high rugged cliffs, the perfect setting for a golf course that runs down to the crashing waves and that will be remembered by anyone who has had the privilege of playing it. Buenavista Golf is a late addition to the courses on the island, but you would never recognise it as such, for it blends into the terrain as if it has been there since time began. Designed by the maestro, Seve Ballesteros, the last course he ever created, it opened for play in November 2003 to instant acclaim. When he opened the course, Seve stated that he had designed what he believed to be a truly unique golf course, and it would be hard to disagree, with the unusual combination of six par 3’s, six par 4’s and six par 5’s, combining to give a classic layout of 72 holes , and a playing length from the back tees of 6019 metres. Not over long by today’s standards, but when the wind blows a challenge that will test the best. It is a test of the quality of a golf course to see how many holes are retained in the memory when the game is over, this is one course that will stay for many a long year, panoramic scenery, of the sea, the cliffs, and on the back nine the waves crashing over the
rocky shoreline. Hopefully the photography will convey at least a sample of the striking setting and the course that nestles comfortably within it, a vista reminiscent of the iconic Californian coast in the United States. The changes in elevation, clinging rough and undulating greens, make it a tough examination, but the spectacular views over the sea and the mountain backdrop are a perfect consolation should the going get too tough. It is constructed in the traditional style of two loops of nine holes, the finishing holes on each of the nines are par 5’s which return to the clubhouse and each is defended by a water hazard, two pars on the scorecard for those testing holes will send you away smiling. Most importantly, even in the high season during the winter, the booking system ensures that there are no crowded tees, no long delays, and you will leave with the memory of the panoramic scenery and the delightful true greens. The holes that run down to the ocean are truly memorable. Although there are clubs for hire at Buenavista, we contacted our old friend Peter Robinson of Tenerife Golf Club Hire, who with his usual aplomb provided us all with new sets of Callaway golf clubs for the duration of our stay. His delivery and collection service to the hotel and the quality of the clubs provided is second to none.

The ultra modern clubhouse is situated overlooking the finishing holes of each nine, and the view over the water feature and then out to the sea is superb. The perfect place to enjoy a drink either before or after playing, gazing out over the views is an added bonus, and provided the perfect reward for our drive to the club from our hotel in Los Cristianos. If you feel like a treat and are a real fan of coffee, try a Barraquito, made with condensed milk, expresso and liquer 43 with a frothy milk top and a sprinkle of cinnamon. GET INTO GOLF IN 2017 WITH SIX WEEK STARTER COURSES AVAILABLE AT 16 GOLF COURSES ACROSS HAMPSHIRE Hampshire Ladies County Golf Association (HLCGA) has announced a new initiative to encourage junior girls across Hampshire, Isle of Wight and Channel Islands to start playing golf by offering six week starter courses. Aimed at girls aged between 6 and 18 years of age, the focus of the weekly sessions is on having fun and meeting other like-minded girls while learning to play the game in a sociable environment. Each session will be held by a PGA qualified coach. After the initial six week course, girls can continue to develop their golf skills at five further monthly sessions held at one of the county's Academy Centres. Each girl will be asked to pay a total fee of £20.00 which includes the six week starter course and attendance at the five monthly sessions held throughout the year. Since when does a reporter in a bikini represent women in golf? A FORMER professional golfer has used her blog to question the choices made by a golf magazine for an annual feature, The Most Beautiful Women in Golf. Anya Alvarez described the article as ‘an inspiring and stunning read about women who have impacted the golf industry with just their looks alone’.
‘A couple of professional golfers were scattered into the mix,’ she wrote, ‘such as LPGA pros Danielle Kang, Cheyenne Woods, Belen Mozo, and sisters Jessica and Nelly Korda. ‘Then came the captivating photos of Julie Crenshaw, wife of former PGA Tour player Ben Crenshaw. Julie was described as “waiting to embrace [Ben] behind the 18th green” when he played in his final Masters tournament, as any good wife should do.
‘Former Miss America, Kira Kasantsev made her debut in the spread, quoted as an “avid golfer”. And Holly Sonders, who is an NFL sideline and golf reporter, made her fourth appearance in a row, wearing the perfect golf attire: a bikini.’ Ms Alvarez said the golf pros showcased were dynamic young women, with talents and interests far more captivating than their looks.
‘For instance, Woods is active in the charity Golf Fore Africa, whose main goal is to provide clean drinking water on the
continent. Kang is an avid photographer who also maintains a lifestyle blog with fellow tour player Michelle Wie.’ Golf media, she concluded, has a complicated relationship with women: it simply does not know what to do with them. Print and broadcast media were all guilty of reducing women to their looks alone.
Physical On TV, there was a regular feature highlighting aspiring female golfer pros with racy Instagram accounts; a golf magazine had only had 23 women on its cover in its 66-year history (nine of those covers were shared with men, and three were given to non-golf pros: Sonders, social media starlet Paulina Gretzky and model Kate Upton); another magazine ‘rarely features female pros on its cover and usually the focus is on

Partnership chairman Nic Coward said: ‘There are 3.6million golfers in England, and the game continues to produce many world-class players. We will continue to work with Sport England on our many projects and initiatives that deliver great results across the country. Our main aim is for all involved in the sport to work together in partnership, to put golfers first and to give everyone the best possible experience within the sport. Now we can consider our next steps, taking time to look at how best to deliver.’

‘Before I played on tour though, I saw first hand how the golf media uses women as props. I competed on a reality TV show, The Big Break. Think of it as a survivor of the fittest for golfers, who participate in a series of challenges to move on from show to show.
The 26-year-old from Southport promised much after his maiden win in the Johnny Walker at Gleneagles in 2013 but nosedived into the lower levels of the world rankings at 103. Now he is back, and with a £400,000 bang. Fending off world number three Dustin Johnson, Fleetwood turned in a display of style and nerve to win the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and the huge cheque that went with it. His 67 in a gripping final round gave him a 17-under total, a one-shot triumph over Johnson and Spain’s Pablo Larrazábal and his second European Tour title.
Happy ‘I had a really rough time – I was really struggling,’ Fleetwood said. ‘I tried changing my swing because I thought it would make me a world-class golfer. I was a bit naive, a bit silly. I went back to my old coach, Alan Thompson, who’s coached me since I was 13 and have been on an upward trend from August really. ‘The next step up was this win. But as well as Dustin, there was Henrik (Stenson) and Martin (Kaymer) up there and they’re all world-beaters. So I’m happy that I sort of proved myself against some of the world’s best.’ By doing so, Fleetwood climbed back up to the brink of the top 50. He will be desperate to rise at least a few places by the end of this month so he can make his debut at Augusta.
‘When filming began one thing was transparent: a couple of the women were selected not for their talents, but rather their physical attributes. One of the hottest products released this month and selling really well in my shop are the King F7 One Length irons from Cobra, and whilst these irons are packed with all of the latest technology that you would expect in 2017, the actual concept of a single length iron is not as revolutionary as you may think. Indeed back in the time of hickory shafts, irons were usually all the same length and it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t until steel shafts were made legal in 1924 that things changed as the weight of the material meant that variable lengths had to be introduced and then the current accommodations for head weight, swing weight, swing plane, ball position and set up lead to a change in the game that we now recognise as the norm. The theory of single length irons has always stacked up but maybe until now the application was lacking. In fact several notable manufacturers over the past 50 years have released their own versions of a single length iron with varying levels of success. The idea is that by having all your irons the same length then you keep the swing weight and set up the same from one club to the next. This makes it simpler to learn and practice as you only ever have one set up to use and it will work with whatever type of swing a golfer has. So why have Cobra decided to launch a single length iron set now? Two reasons. Firstly shaft and head technology has improved through the use of new materials that make the concept viable again. The King F7 irons feature the same â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Tecfloâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; construction and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Pwrshellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; face design as
Secondly, it has a high profile advocate in former physics student and PGA Tour player Bryson DeChambeau, who is in fact a contracted player for Cobra golf, and has been instrumental in the design and development of these clubs. So how does the theory work in practice? As a professional with a passion for teaching I am often advocating that proper setup includes foot positioning, spine angle and ball position, along with many other variables. These all change as you switch between longer and shorter length clubs causing more room for error. With all the cobra irons being one length you have one setup and one swing simplifying the entire process, leading to a more consistent set of irons as every shot is played with a much simpler setup and swing. It doesn't matter what sort of golfer you are. Everyone needs to know where they want to go with their games and have a plan of how they will get there. Now is your chance to get a bit revved up about how, with simple, small changes, your golf can come on in leaps and bounds this Spring. Many players I teach get in their own way when it comes to how good their golf CAN be. They talk themselves down and focus more on what goes wrong that what goes well. Think about people you play golf with. The ones who constantly think and talk negatively and knock themselves down. What ends up happening is you get dragged down with them. If you hear a disaster story often enough you start to dread disaster.They need to learn to focus on what has gone well in previous games, on what could potentially happen, not what it likely to go wrong before it's even happened. These golfers are Energy Sappers. They turn your attention to negative things (you may not have noticed until they mentioned them) and potential gloom and doom. Start this Spring by becoming an ENERGY GIVER. See the effect that is has on your fellow golfers. Word of warning. Don't congratulate poor shots as if trying to turn it into something better than the bad shot it was. This will just rub people up the wrong way. Instead try and

Hook or Slice? Like many players, my tendency has always been to draw the ball. When I was playing competitive golf, the draw would be under control if my rhythm and timing were good. The problems came when my timing went off a little. I could, out of the blue, throw in a nasty hook. Many times I’ve played with golfers who fade and slice. Often they’ve said to me, “I wish I hit with a draw like you”. Little did they realise that I was thinking “I’d love to be able to forget the left side of the fairway like you can”! Many golfers are of the opinion that a cut shot is a poor shot and a draw is a good one. In fact many do all they can to go from a fade to a draw. Often these golfers gain a bit of yardage but lose consistency – not realising that the swing that fades and slices the ball has a much more stable clubface at impact than a swing that draws and hooks. The draw generally has the face of the club moving out away from the body as it rotates, while the fade tends to have the club moving more towards the body, staying open. So it tends to be more reliable. If you are one of those people who fades and slices, it might be a good idea to do things that make the shot more solid rather than trying to change to a draw. Many of the top professionals favour the fade because of its reliability. I remember reading an article written about the great Harry Vardon, who won the first of his six Open titles in 1896 and became golf’s first true superstar. In the article it stated that Vardon’s great advantage over his rivals was that he was able to hit high, soft landing, fading long iron shots into the greens. Another great with the same advantage was Jack Nicklaus. I’m going to finish this article with a little story about Lee Trevino, a great golfer who stated that he didn’t even want a car that turned left. The story goes that after Trevino had despatched a drive down the middle of the fairway, a person in the gallery rather loudly said to a friend, “he sliced it”. On hearing the comment, as quick as a flash, Trevino turned around and said, “yep, that slice has earned me twenty million dollars”!
Pictured is Sam Hutsby who is, at present, on the Challenge Tour. He has also played on the European Tour. As an amateur Sam rose to World number two and he played in the Walker Cup. At the beginning of the year Sam contacted me because he wanted to develop his swing to make it easier to fade the ball. To that end, we are working towards reducing shaft rotation through impact. The swing in the blue shirt is where we started and the one with the hat on was the last lesson. As you can see, things have improved dramatically. More of Sam’s progress in future Tee Times.
