All the clubs are the same length – and it seems to work EVEN the top pros are intrigued by the equipment and style of a young American amateur who looks as if he has hit upon a new way to play great golf. Rory McIlroy and Ernie Els were both peeking curiously into the bag of 22-year-old and firing questions at the reigning U.S. amateur champion Bryson DeChambeau during the Abu Dhabi tour event recently. What they saw in there was a unique set of clubs, and what their owner is developing is a singular approach to the game.

‘They're all the same length,’ DeChambeau told BBC Sport. ‘Same lie angle, same shaft, just different loft. Same bounce configuration as well on each and every one of them.

Has this man found the secret of the perfectly consistent golf style?

‘But it's four degrees of loft difference between them and it works pretty well. It helps me keep my same posture, same setup, same everything, and allows me to perform quite nicely with my irons.’

An ace machine HERE comes the future, in the shape of a robot that can make a hole in one. Eldrick, a machine named after Tiger Woods, nailed the ace on 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale – 19 years after the self-same Woods did it on the same hole. The crowd cheered raucously and showered the green to mark the memorable exhibition.

New R&A chief warns about complacency over gambling GOLF cannot be complacent about the possibility of being hit by a betting scandal, says the sport's governing body. While tennis and cricket look to their houses following recent revelations about money changing hands to ensure the right result for gamblers, new R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers says ‘inappropriate gambling’ is a subject moving towards the top of the agenda for golf's authorities.

Jamie heads Match-fixing in for the U.S.

golf? Don’t bet against it. . .

SOMERSET’S Jamie Li is one of four leading young English golfers who will head to the USA this summer to take up places at American universities.

Previously, European Tour chief executive Keith Pelley said there was absolutely no concern over match-fixing in golf.

The other teenage internationals who will continue their studies while developing their golf are: Eloise Healey of Lancashire, Matty Lamb of Northumberland and Rhys NevinWharton of Cheshire.

But speaking to BBC Sport in his first major interview since taking over at St Andrews last September, Mr Slumbers was more cautious.

Jamie, 18, of Bath Golf Club won the 2015 Telegraph BMW Junior Championship. He is joining Florida State University.

‘We have not been made aware of any evidence yet of the type of issues currently being discussed happening in the game of golf,’ he said. ‘That doesn't mean we are complacent about it. Anything where you have inappropriate betting actually undermines that sport. So it's something we are keeping our eye on very closely and we are looking at the implications.’ There are already protocols in place requiring European Tour players to sign a declaration preventing them from betting on golf. This also applies at The Open. Mr Slumbers believes the authorities are well equipped to police the issue. But in light of the recent publicity in tennis, among other

sports, he admitted the subject was a high priority for golf bosses.

opportunity for the sport to grow on a global scale, and the exposure must not be wasted.

‘I think the events of the last few months will bring it more to the top of those agendas, yes. If there was evidence starting to build of inappropriate betting, the game is run by some very responsible and sensible people who have the game at heart and I'm sure will do the right thing. We are certainly keeping this under careful attention. I'm sure if we have to go further, we will go further because inappropriate betting will undermine sport.’

‘I'm always amazed every four years when the Olympics comes along at what sports I watch.

On the return of golf to the Olympics this year, Mr Slumbers said it was a massive

So there will be a lot of people out there who will say 'right let's watch the golf,' and that exposure to hundreds of millions or billions of people watching the Olympics could be fantastic. ‘But there are probably a number of sports that have been in the Olympics that haven't had a long-term surge in participation from it. We mustn't let that enthusiasm die.’

‘I finished my A Levels in August 2015 but took a year off before returning to education, which was definitely the best decision for me. It has allowed me to concentrate on some specific areas with my coach, Ben Lloyd at Cumberwell Park, and mature. ‘I was lucky enough to be selected by England Golf, along with Matty, to play in the Junior Players tournament at TPC Sawgrass in 2014. It was a fantastic tournament which was also attended by lots of the college golf coaches and I kept in contact with some. As I approached the end of my A Levels I began to consider the American route and went out to visit two universities in Florida. The coaches at Florida State, Trey Jones and Robert Duck, are fantastic and the facilities and support you get are unbelievable, so for me it wasn't a difficult decision.’

Excellent West PGA season on the cards CHAMPION Lee Thompson will defend his title as four Order of Merit tournaments at quality venues in different counties highlight an exciting tournament line-up for 2016 by the PGA West Region. The 43-year-old Dudsbury player will have the benefit of competing once more on his home course as he attempts to retain the Dudsbury Masters which is sponsored again by Ringwood Brewery in June. This year’s Masters kicks off the programme at the Bournemouth course which has become one of the most prestigious hotel, leisure and golf facilities in the country. The eighth Total Triumph Classic at Oake Manor, near Taunton, has been put back until June 28-29 to ensure a fast-running course in pristine condition. National PGA champion Paul Hendriksen (Ivybridge), a member of the victorious history-making PGA Cup team in California, will defend his title. Once again amateurs will have a chance to play alongside the finest PGA Professionals on the second day in their own strokeplay competition.

By Peter Godsiff Neil Mossman, owner of Total Triumph, is a past captain of Oake Manor and, as he this year’s captain of the Somerset county first team, expects many of the leading Somerset amateurs to enter. The PGA West Region Players Championship, won last year by Adam Frayne (Yelverton), returns to Cumberwell Park for a fifth year on July 18-19. The pro-am which precedes the main event at the course near Bath is the most popular of the season. The PGA West Region Championship, the South West’s most prestigious and longestrunning tournament, returns to the classic championship links at Saunton on August 22-24 and embraces four championships. Kevin Harper (East Devon) took the major award last year while Tracy Loveys (Bigbury), Kelvin Aitken (Chippenham Golf Centre) and Toby Hunt (St Mellons) will remarkably attempt to win the women’s, seniors’ and assistants’ titles for the third successive year. Young professionals under the age of 30 and club assistants will again feature the Pro’s

I use an integrated, holistic approach to coaching, understanding that as a golfer we are all unique in the way our bodies move, due to the demands of the external environment placed upon us, such as various occupations and individual lifestyle factors, all developing their own bio-motor patterns within the nervous system. Ingrained motor patterns influence both posture statically and dynamically, thus affecting the way the golf club orbits within the swing. Your movement becomes your posture and your posture becomes your structure, and ultimately your golf swing, thus an individualised approach is used utilising key alignments and corrective exercise, instead of the usual cookie cut out method. If you are as passionate about your golf as I am about my coaching then please contact me and I look forward to working with you.

Have Clubs Will Travel Tenerife

GOLF LAS AMERICAS - FIVE STAR QUALITY Golfers who search for the sun, have made Spain a very popular destination, particularly for winter golf. In seeking pastures new, it was not surprising that the next logical step, Michael Rees having learned to order beer and coffee in Spanish on the mainland, would be to travel that little bit further to enjoy guaranteed year round sunshine without the extreme heat of the summer months. The perfect place to visit for all year round golf was not hard to locate, the Canary Islands, with an ideal climate that is rarely too hot, a mean temperature of above 23 degrees the year round and never too cold. The largest of the islands is Tenerife, it was well known to summer tourists, but has become more and more the choice of discerning golfers. The South of the island has several first class courses and is the ideal base, even if you plan to travel to Buenavista or Real Golf de Tenerife in the North of the island. One of my personal favourite hotels is Las Madrigueras located in the Playa Las Americas district, a beautiful five star hotel built in the colonial style which is not too large but where the attention and service is second to none, and the restaurant one of superb quality. Adjacent is the golf course Las Americas, and residents of the hotel have direct access from the buggy garage out onto the course. The golf course is built in a natural amphitheatre, it starts around the lake, a design by the world renowned course architect John Jacobs that has stood the test of time, and is still the ideal holiday venue. We had the added benefit of renting our golf clubs from the club, a real boon to save the cost and the trouble of bringing the bag from the United Kingdom, especially when the clubs provided are of such excellent quality, top brand names to satisfy the majority of golfers. The staff were first class in ensuring

that we were fully equipped with clubs, a golf buggy and everything necessary for a good day on the course. All thanks to the first class arrangements made by for us by Brendan Breen, the Commercial Director for golf at Las Americas. After refreshment on the terrace it was time to test the greens with a few minutes on the putting green, distracted or serenaded by the abundant bird life, depending on whether or not you are a wildlife enthusiast. The display of exotic flowers and flowering bushes, especially on the terraces is breath-taking. Hopefully the photography will convey the beauty of the setting and the golf course. Having enjoyed all the ancillary features it was time to face the challenge of golf, our first outing since arrival on the island. The course is laid out in the traditional two loops of nine coming back to the clubhouse at the turn, ensuring that the lake which is more of a decoration on the first comes into play on the finishing hole. The numerous lakes water courses and ponds make this essentially parkland course one to be respected. Water comes into play on eight of the holes, and two of the short holes demand tee shots that clear the water, the 5th and the 16th, which has water on three sides.

Golf Academy

However the most intimidating of the water affected holes is the dogleg 17th, where water is in play the length of the fairway. Having said that the quality of the greens was so good, being fast and true, that there is every opportunity to score well once on the green. Either that or the putter in my hired set was simply having a magical day. After a most enjoyable round of golf, there was time to sit out in the sunshine and enjoy a celebratory jug of sangria or glass of beer. A fantastic way to enjoy golf in the sunshine whilst Great Britain was languishing in high winds and torrential rain. It was interesting to talk with the golfers present, from across Europe, Ireland, France, Holland, Germany and Sweden, all agreeing that Golf Las Americas is the ideal resort style course, a challenge but rewarding and not too punitive for those with less experience. Our verdict was a unanimous endorsement for winter golf, especially in the sunshine, and one to be repeated again and again. For those more accustomed to summer visits to the Canary Islands, consider adding golf to your agenda, clubs are simple to hire, so no undue baggage, and the courses are far less busy, much cheaper in what is considered the low season. Whenever you go, enjoy the wide variety and quality of golf in the beautiful islands.

WHAT WE WILL DO TO IMPROVE OUR GAME Steve Pope Photography

Cottrell Park Golf Resort has been named 2015 Future Financials Welsh Golf Club of the Year at the Golf Union Wales Annual Awards Ceremony at Celtic Manor Resort on Wednesday 3 February 2016.

I recently played with a lady who putted like a demon. It didn’t matter where her ball landed on the green she could nudge her ball right up to the hole so was certain of going down on the next putt. She didn’t win any prizes on the day because her fairway play was a bit dodgy - isn’t that always the way! She admitted later, she’d always been useless at putting until she had a jumbo grip fitted, however, since then she hasn’t looked back. So, naturally, I rushed back to my golf club and arranged for my Professional to fit a similar big grip, confident it would stop my wrists rotating like a spinning top and knock shots off my game. In fact, I was so keen about the theory, I even enquired about having jumbo grips on all my clubs, but apparently it doesn’t work that way. It’s amazing the lengths we’ll go to improve our golf. I’ve forked out hundreds of pounds on new drivers to gain a few yards off the tee only to discover the further you hit the ball the more likely the angle is wrong! I bought an electric trolley as someone once convinced me it would save energy and my handicap would tumble. They didn’t mention the exhausting weight lifting exercises required to hump the kit in and out of the car.

I’ve even bought special wrist bands because they would keep me more focused and give me more energy, yet the only time I remember walking off the course, bursting with energy, is when I had a cracking round. Why is good golf effortless whilst a bad round is totally draining? I invested in a GPS watch to help hone my shots onto the green but I’ve yet to discover one that takes account of the wind, atmosphere or ground condition plus you still have to hit the ball well! So did my £24 investment in a jumbo putter handle turn me into a single figure handicapper? No but my putting has improved slightly, although I can still throw in the odd three putt during the course of a game. Interestingly, my very best golfing aid still remains a pair of pink rubber gloves as they are simply brilliant at keeping my hands dry and maintaining a decent grip on the club in the middle of a downpour.

The resort, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year ,was awarded the honour above all other golf clubs in Wales because of its diversity, outstanding customer service and commitment to the environment. The ambitious club has seen over 20,000 golf visitors in the past twelve months, an increase of 2% on the previous year due to its development and expansion of wideranging leisure facilities. There have been 27 weddings and six wedding fayres, firmly establishing the resort as a an elegant venue for weddings with award winning cuisine. Cottrell Park Resort also hosts Corporate parties and team building events, attracting a wider demographic of visitors to experience the vast facilities. Whilst the club prides itself on being a welcoming resort that doesn't alienate local guests and tourists, it keeps the traditions and etiquette of golf at its heart.

The economic downturn spurred on an ambitious team to diversify and offer a wide range of facilities to a wide-ranging group whilst always keeping the integrity of the golf’ he added. Forty years in the Golf Industry, Smith himself brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the resort: “We aim to be accessible to all but 40 years in this industry has taught me that it is equally important to remain loyal to our members and this award proves that the team of staff we have here have delivered on every level. I’d also like to thank the owners of the resort David and Jonathan JohnsPowell for their continued support, their vision and their willingness to always invest in the resort” Customer service has been a high priority at the resort which Smith attributes much of the resorts success to: “We listen to all our customers, from local visitors and tourists to our loyal members.

“Customer service is first and foremost here, all our staff undergo customer service training on an annual basis and we actively encourage feedback on our TripAdvisor profile. We have recently been awarded the TripAdvisor certificate of excellence, which we are also very proud of as it puts us within the top 10% of businesses to be given this status.

Head Greenkeeper, Paul Morgan who has already celebrated his own personal 20th anniversary as a valued employee of Cottrell Park, has seen the club grow from its inception in the mid 1990s to the two 18hole championship-maintained golf courses on offer today.

“We’re pro-active in our commitment to the environment for example, we participate in an annual tree planting and maintenance programme and recycle all rain water.

Derek Smith, General Manager was delighted with the accolade: “This is the result of many years of hard work by each and every person at the resort, and I can’t wait to go back and let everyone know. There has always been a vision at Cottrell, that the resort needed to be more than just a golf club.

“Cottrell Park has held the largest golf membership in Wales since 2007 with the only exception being 2014 when we were second highest and with a year of celebration to come this award is the best start to the year the resort could wish for.” said Smith.

Have Clubs Will Travel - Tenerife After the first game at Golf Las Americas, it was time to return to an old favourite at Golf Del Sur. Since we Michael Rees were playing several games, we found once again what a marvellous boon it was to be able to rent clubs for the duration of our stay. Several years ago I became aware of Peter Robinson, who runs a first class club hire service, Tenerife Golf Club Hire, which we would be using for the rest of our stay. Having the clubs delivered and collected from the hotel was a positive advantage. Equipped with new Ping, Taylor Made and Callaway clubs set us well for the next four days of golf.

GOLF DEL SUR - TWENTY SEVEN CLASSIC HOLES OF GOLF

The majority of the recent and excellent golf courses, opened since the late 1980s are in the South of the island, set in beautiful surroundings, and served by first class accommodation, with a surfeit of five star hotels, apartments and plenty of quality restaurants. The international airport is also located there, and it is close to the popular resorts of Los Cristianos, Las Americas and Costa Adeje, and within easy reach there are five first class golf courses. Not just golf courses, but quality venues with courses that are all in excellent condition. The opening of what was the new airport in 1978 transformed the southern parts of the island, which enjoys a slightly better climate than that in the north, less cloud affected and more settled. Golf Del Sur is located close to the airport, it is the first glimpse that you get of golf on the island as you descend into the airport, an oasis of green amongst the dry rutted barrancas. Something else to focus on after the spectacular views of snow-capped Mount Teide. Golf Del Sur was founded in 1987, it was the second course built on the island, and the first in the South. It was designed by Pepe Gancedo but later modified by Ryder Cup player Manuel Pinero, who made a point of enhancing all the natural contours and spectacular ravines to provide a first class challenge. It has three loops of nine holes, named North, South and Links, any combination of the three loops will give the golfer a testing but enjoyable round of golf. With a spectacular backdrop of views inland to Mount Teide and the neighbouring volcanic outcrops it is certainly picturesque setting. It is unique on the island in that it is also a members club in addition to being a pay and play facility, with some two hundred club members, the advantage of having twenty seven holes means that all can be accommodated. Golf Del Sur has hosted the Tenerife Open on the European Tour on a number of occasions, with winners that include Ryder Cup players

Jose Maria Olazabal, Mark James and David Gilford. In 1995 it hosted Shells Wonderful World of Golf battle between Ernie Els and Phil Mickelson, a high recommendation indeed. After a warm up on the putting green it was time to sample golf in earnest, and the attention is drawn instantly to the black volcanic sand which is featured in the bunkers, a very different sight, and initially strange material to play from. All three courses are in excellent condition, but I would always recommend that the North course is included, whenever possible, if only for the spectacular 3rd hole. A long par five with a deep ochre coloured barranca called the San Blas Ravine, which runs along the whole of right hand edge of the fairway, a fairway which rises to a green protected on the left with a huge gaping black bunker awaiting the wayward approach. For those with an interest in birdlife there is a fascination variety all-round the course, and numerous water birds on the lakes and water courses. With the backdrop of Mount Teide, capped with snow for much of the year, it is hard to imagine a finer place to play winter golf.

Golf Academy

Each of the three loops returns to the clubhouse, and each has a very distinct flavour. The South course also has its memory jerker, the 193 metre second hole is dominated by an immense bunker of black sand, an incentive to find the green with the tee shot, and it is fondly nicknamed “Fried Egg”. One of the many holes to savour.

the perfect place to stock up ready for later in the year after the return home. Golf Del Sur is superbly equipped for holiday golf, long experience and attention to detail gives the visiting golfer everything he could wish for during a stay on the island. For more information visit the websites:

The Links always appears to be the most generous in yielding pars, especially if you can avoid the numerous water hazards, which come into play in the middle holes Iof the nine, where the changes in elevation have been used to create each individual hole. Cascading waterfalls link the lakes and make for impressive backdrop. The views out to sea and along the coast to the Red Rock are a constant reminder of the proximity of the sea. The golf shop has been radically refurbished and modernised since my last visit, and is now exceedingly well stocked with all the essential requirements for holiday golf. The range of clothing, both for ladies and gentlemen is enough to attract the attention of any golfer,

Stars at the crossroads? LUKE: I THOUGHT ABOUT QUITTING LUKE Donald, long considered the most meticulous striker of a golf ball, has revealed that he recently considered giving up the game. The 38-year-old former world number one topped the world rankings in 2012 but has suffered a slump in form and has dropped out of the top 50 for the first time in more than a decade.

Spieth rapped in ‘slow play’ crackdown JORDAN Spieth became the first highprofile player to be issued with a ‘monitoring penalty’ under the European Tour's fresh crackdown on slow play.

Luke Donald: The former king of swing told himself: Grow up

Donald has not won a Major yet, but has starred in four victorious Ryder Cup teams. He missed out on selection for Europe's win at Gleneagles in 2014 after failing to secure a European or PGA tournament victory since 2012.

Caddie John McLaren decided to end their six-year association last October but Donald found guidance from sports psychologist Michael Gervais, the man who helped Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner become the first human to break the sound barrier without mechanical assistance.

The 38-year-old Englishman said: ‘My confidence had taken a big knock and I asked myself if I wanted to continue doing this.

Donald, who has finished third at both the Masters and US PGA Championship and won more than £35m in his career, is now ranked 78 in the world and needs to return to the top 50 or win on the PGA Tour to qualify for a 12th consecutive Masters at Augusta next month.

When you're in a slump it's easy to forget you're still the one who is in control.

‘Then I told myself not to be a baby, to grow up and realise how lucky I was. I was still playing golf for a living.’

‘I wasn't enjoying it, finding it so very hard and could not see much light at the end of the tunnel,’ he told the Daily Telegraph.

‘I think I have a little way to go, but I'm feeling confident that I can get back to at least close to a level I was a few years ago.’

The only barrier Luke was facing was one of confidence: ‘Michael just reminded me that it's up to me what mood or mindset I'm in.

The world No 1 was warned he had taken too long over his birdie putt on the par-five eighth hole in Abu Dhabi, his 17th. Chief referee John Paramor issued Spieth with the warning as he made his way to the next tee. The European Tour announced recently that the new timing regulations would be enforced at the championship. Two monitoring penalties spark a fine of £2,000. Tour chief executive Keith Pelley insisted the measures would help trim around 15 minutes off a typical round of tournament golf. Spieth felt the warning from Paramor was excessive as the group behind were only just teeing off as he was lining up his 15-foot putt for birdie. He was backed by playingpartner Rory McIlroy.

SERGIO: I could still have lots of Majors yet SERGIO Garcia, still a crowd favourite and still a fixture in the world’s top 10, might be running out of time if he is to capture an elusive Major. But the 36-year-old Spaniard has not given up yet. Full of beans for the new season’s prospects, with a possible eighth Ryder Cup and an Olympic debut, Garcia still has his eyes fixed on a Major.

‘I guess every year that goes by, it feels another chance that has kind of gone by,’ he told the BBC’s Iain Carter. ‘But like if I get to 45 and I haven't won any, then I will probably feel a lot of pressure then. But I still feel like I'm young enough to be able to do it, hopefully several times. If I keep playing well, I'm still going to have a lot of Majors to come, so a lot of opportunities are there for me. We'll see.’

It is extraordinary to think that Garcia has now turned 36 and is still waiting, said Carter: ‘Remember the callow, precocious bundle of energy who ran Tiger Woods so close on his US PGA Championship debut back in 1999?

‘The Spaniard began his 18th European Tour season in a windswept Qatar, where he finished in a reasonable share of seventh place. The highlight was a second-round 66 but, worryingly, his putting again failed to match the prowess of his long game. ‘No-one finishing ahead of Garcia bettered his statistics tee to green but an average of 31.5 putts per round proved his undoing. By the final round the popular Spanish star was again experimenting with his putting grip.’

TIGER: I still see my future self at the highest level TIGER Woods is back in a positive mood and expecting to win Majors in the next 10 years. The 40-year-old former world number one had more back surgery in September, and later talked about retirement.

Woods: More back surgery, but still upbeat

But now he hopes to play competitive golf early in this new season, and is looking to the future: ‘Where do I see myself in the next five to 10 years? I am still playing golf at the highest level, winning tournaments and

Golf Academy

Majors,’ he wrote on his website. Woods spent a record total of 683 weeks as world number one but he is now 414th and won the last of his 14 majors in 2008. ‘Mentally, people who know me know I'm like a five-year-old,’ he said. ‘Physically, sometimes I feel old and sometimes I feel like a teenager. I don't like the polar opposites. I'd like to be somewhere in the middle where I feel 40.’

Jordan Spieth: ‘Warning was excessive’

Odd

‘It was a bit odd,’ said Spieth. ‘I got a bad time on my putt on the eighth when they took us off the clock on that green and the guys behind us hadn't even reached the fairway on a par five. ‘I understand that if you are being timed and you are taking longer than the allotted time, you get a bad time.I understand the rule but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense when our group had caught up.’ But Paramor said: ‘Pace of play on the European Tour is measured by whether a group keeps to the starting interval between groups, rather than if they are on the same hole, as it is in America.

‘Jordan was assessed a monitoring penalty after his putt on the eighth hole, which I advised him of as he walked to the ninth tee.’

THE LURKING THREAT IN GOLF WITH Britain’s notoriously fickle weather still doing very strange things comes a timely reminder to golfers about the extreme dangers of lightning strikes. A reader’s question to the Daily Mail was: Has any pro golfer suffered death or major injury from a lightning strike?

West Region PGA

The response reminded all golfers that, of all sports, golf is the most vulnerable: to a lightning bolt, a golf course is an open field and a golfer, particularly one wielding a metal club, is a ready lightning rod.

FORMER Moor Park professional Lawrence Farmer showed his class to record his first win since relocating to Somerset and joining the Gloucester and Somerset PGA, writes Peter Godsiff.

And the game is played among trees and water, both of which attract lightning.

The Street-based player shared top spot with Giuseppe Licata (Bristol Golf Centre) and David Dixon (Enmore Park) on 34 stableford points over the frozen Burnham and Berrow links course.

In the UK, 47 deaths were attributed to lightning between 1988 and 2013, and 13 per cent of these were on golf courses. The most famous incident in pro golf was at the 1975 Western Open near Chicago, when lightning from a distant storm struck sideways across the course, hit a lake and flashed through damp ground, hitting several players.

Lawrence is hot as the temperature plummets

Above: Lightning has struck this flagpole and the tentacles of electricity are plain to see. Below: John White, the star footballer killed by a bolt; Lee Trevino, who narrowly escaped death after a strike; and Retief Goosen, who was left with an irregular heartbeat for life

The committee decided to change the scoring to a stableford format to eliminate complete disasters from unpredictable bounces in sub-zero temperatures on a thick white frosty course that greeted early starters. Conditions were no easier for the later players despite the slight thaw.

Prodigy Four-time Major winner Lee Trevino and golfing prodigy Jerry Heard were playing together when the bolt struck. It surged through Trevino’s bag, up his arm and exited through his back. Heard was struck in the groin, where the tip of his umbrella was resting, and effectively ended his career. On the other side of the lake, another Major winner, Bobby Nichols, and the marshal with his group were both knocked to the ground by a second bolt.

A fourth player affected was Tony Jacklin, who later described what happened: he was holding his swing finish with an eight iron when the first bolt struck. It knocked the club out of his hands and sent it flying 30ft, which prompted the famous wisecrack: ‘I should have held up a one iron. Not even God can hit a one iron.’ Two-time Major winner Retief Goosen was struck by lightning while golfing with a friend when he was hit. The strike left him

with an irregular heartbeat, diminished hearing and a pile of scorched clothes which he still keeps in a drawer as a souvenir. In Britain, golf and soccer fans were distraught at the death of John White, a wonderful Spurs player, who was sheltering under a tree during a thunderstorm at Crews Hill Golf Club in Enfield in 1964 when lightning struck and killed him instantly. He was 27.

Farmer played in the second group and negotiated the downwind front nine in a level par for 18 points with two birdies and two bogeys. He dropped strokes coming home at the 12th and 13th to total 16 points, but he was one of only two players to score points on every hole. He also added the Over 40’s sweep to his winnings. Dixon was next to post 34 points as he returned from a two-week stint in South Africa on the European Tour. He started slowly before reaching the turn in 15 points helped by an eagle three at the eighth. Superb

No more golf for you, says Trump

All aboard for the Rider Cup

He matched par until making birdies at 16th and 17th but a bogey at the home hole cost him the possibility of an outright victory. Licata had even greater cause to curse the 18th as he dropped two shots and failed to score the one point he required to win on his own. He played the first 11 holes in a superb three-under-par but shed five strokes in the closing seven holes.

YOU just cannot keep Donald Trump out of the golfing news. Following his spat with Scottish politicians over wind turbines being placed off the coastline of his Aberdeenshire golf course, Trump has been using golf again to make political points. No money After criticising the amount of golf that President Barack Obama has been playing while in office (more rounds than Tiger Woods, Trump said), the Republican candidate has now stated that Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders' tax policies would kill golf.

THE stars tried their hand at the latest must-have piece of kit for today’s discerning golfer. Before the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, four golfers ranked among the PGA’s top six had a go on ‘GolfBoards’ - basically golf carts for the modern man.

Trump told the crowd: ‘This guy wants to raise your taxes to 90 percent. No, no, think. You'll have to move out. You won't have any golf any more. You won't have any money left to be golfing.’

U.S. compatriots Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler joined Europe’s Rory McIlroy and Henrik Stenson as they checked out the course.

Golf Academy

He did improve his Total Triumph Order of Merit position as the leading duo of Ross Langdon (Gloucester) and Louis Boston (Windmill Hill) suffered on the frozen course. Home professional David Haines, despite feeling under the weather, and former European Tour player Mark Sanders (Stockwood Vale) shared fourth with 32 points.

Have Clubs Will Travel - Tenerife

BUENAVISTA The Beauty & The Beast The town of Garachico, lies in the lush North West part of the island of Tenerife, it was badly damaged by the last eruption of Mount Teide in 1907, after which it was restored. It Michael Rees is just over one hours drive from La Reina, the airport in the South, but it is a million miles from the hustle and bustle of the holiday hotspots of Los Christianos, Las Americas and Costa Adeje, or Puerto De la Cruz in the North. The climate is superb, rarely changing throughout the year, with a spring-like quality that is not nearly so hot as the popular beach resorts in the Southern tip of the island, with a refreshing breeze that calms the nerves but which can easily destroy your golf swing and with it your scorecard when it gets a little stronger. The town itself,is a natural delight, with the waves crashing onto the rocks, the old harbour and the beach, the uniquely adapted and developed natural sea swimming zone is an ever popular attraction. The town was originally a port of some commercial importance, but that has long since declined, though the central buildings and streets are practically unchanged, all of which adds to the charm. The region is called Isla Baja, and it lies under the shelter of the Teno mountain range, and here just few kilometres from the centre of the old town, lies Buenavista Golf, a later addition to the golf courses on the island, it is a spectacular course designed by none other than the Spanish maestro Seve Ballesteros, it is adjacent to the sea and the spectacular coastline. It opened as recently as November 2003, although you would hardly believe it, as it blends so naturally into the landscape and the seascape.

The island government was responsible for the investment in the golf course, to assist with the development of the area, and provide much needed employment.

ensures that there are no crowded tees, no long delays, and you will leave with the memory of the panoramic scenery and the delightful true greens.

When the course opened for play, Seve stated that he had designed what he believed was a truly unique golf course, a par 72 layout of 6019 metres, with the unusual combination of six par 3’s, six par 4’s and six par 5’s.

The ultra modern clubhouse is situated overlooking the finishing holes of each nine, and the view over the water feature and then out to the sea is superb. The photographs can never do justice to the views, with the backdrop of mountains and the sea crashing over the lava rock shore, so reminiscent of Pebble Beach in California.

One of the ways to define the quality of a golf course, is to see how many of the individual holes stay in the memory banks. This is one course where I would gamble that the score will be very high. The changes in elevation, clinging rough and undulating greens, make it a tough examination, but the spectacular views over the sea and the mountain backdrop are a perfect consolation should the going get too tough. It is constructed in the traditional style of two loops of nine holes, the finishing holes on each of the nines are par 5’s which return to the clubhouse and each is defended by a water hazard, two pars on the scorecard for those testing holes will send you away smiling. Most importantly, even in the high season during the winter, the booking system

Golf Academy

Although the course was only opened at the end of 2003, it had already hosted a European LPGA event within a year, the Tenerife Open.

Well worth the time and effort to get there and the cost of the stay, whether for a short visit or a longer stay ! As an alternative, if you really want a taste of luxury, you can visit the 117 bedroom New Melia Hacienda Del Conde, recently opened adults only hotel adjacent to the golf course. A true taste of elegance and pampering.for those who desire it. Wherever you stay, and whenever you go, Buenavista |Golf will provide you with a wonderful golfing experience, and views, particularly on the back nine, you will never forget.

For more information visit the websites: This is a course that warrants inclusion into the must play list for any holiday golfer, and a superb addition to the other first class courses already available on this island paradise. The sheer beauty of the location and the impact of the holes running down to the ocean is truly memorable. For those looking for something truly different, a stay at the family owned boutique Hotel San Roque and then playing at Buenavista Golf make a perfect combination.

COWDRAY PARK GOLF CLUB Everywhere you want to be

Drive for Show Putt EGGCELLENT for Dough. Is that true?

EXECUTION Standing over a ball that is neatly propped up on a tuft of grass is an exciting moment in many a golfers round. For some though it is at the exact moment before they swing the club back that the nightmare scenario jumps into their mind in glorious Technicolor. How wrong can this shot go? All they need to do is swing back and through to a finish and the ball soars onto the green but instead some kind of erratic movement jerks their swings out of control and the ball clatters into the nearby woods never to be seen again.

My article last month explained how beneficial random practice is. I gave you an exercise to do where you had to count several pairs of numbers. One pair was repeated several times in the sequence, while the others were all different. I am sure that those of you who added the pairs of numbers found that the answer came very quickly and easily on the repeated numbers, after you had added them for the first time, whilst each of the random numbers took more time and effort to work out. This little test demonstrates that the brain doesn’t have to work too hard once it has done something once. How easy is it to hole a putt on the second attempt!!

The cries of "WHY!!" follow swiftly by "EVERY TIME... I KNEW THAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN." Whilst their playing partners comment in a less than helpful manner about how sublime the practice swing was. A familiar scene? How on earth do you stop the nightmare thoughts jumping on board an otherwise serene and controlled ship? Here are a few ways to help you stay in control, in the moment and help you execute the shot as you know you can not as you feared you might!

I remember years ago when the Spanish players, such as the great Seve Ballesteros, came and dominated play on the European Tour. They all seemed to have magical short games. Seve, in particular, displayed tremendous imagination when selecting shots. I remember listening to the late great Henry Cotton making the comment that Seve seemed to play many difficult shots as though he had done it before. The truth is he probably had - in practice!!

Firstly your mind is a more than powerful tool. Possibly the most powerful tool you own. It's yours and nobody elses, therefore you are in control and CAN control it. In the same way that the images of the poor shots can enter the frame so too can images of the GOOD ones. It's just a matter of training your brain. Spend some time on the range hitting shot at a time as if you were on the course. Go through your pre-shot routine. If you don't have one this will help. Stand behind your ball, do a practice swing. Visualise your ball heading toward and landing beside your target. Address the ball and keep that image fresh. Keep your swing smooth, brush the mat/grass and finish. Take a moment to hopefully admire your shot. Step off the mat, choose another target and go through the routine again. If a negative thought jumps into your head as you are over the ball step away. Take a deep breath and start again. By doing this on the practice ground you will learn to have a clear head over the ball. Also you'll find you won't need to step off the ball on the course, you'll have

mastered the art of calm composure through your practicing. So you won't need to be readdressing your ball umpteen times. Take it on the course and try it. A few holes of practice out there will be so valuable and hike your confidence up. Even better book a playing lesson especially if you have "demon" holes where disaster strikes on an all to regular basis. JUST A THOUGHT When you do a practice swing the focus is on making good contact with whatever the ball happens to be sat on and swinging to a full finish. So try and take the ball out of the equation once you've addressed it, call it a second practice swing. Focus on brushing the grass (or tee) and finishing. Let the ball just get in the way. This is a good way to defeat those demons. Also a good way to stop the "your practice swing is brilliant" comments. Good luck. Kick start your golf this Spring with lessons at Hamptworth Golf and Country Club or Cowdray Park Golf Club. Email me on katiedawkinsgolf@hotmail.co.uk for availability. Happy Easter and Happy Golfing.

You will understand how Seve and the other Spanish players developed such great flare and imagination if you go to Spain and watch how the youngsters practice. They don’t stand on the edge of the green with a bag of Pro V’s and hit countless shots at a couple of holes. You will see them compete amongst each other in trying to bring off all sorts of weird and wonderful shots. They probably don’t think of it as practice, rather just having fun, without realising that they are in fact learning. A former Masters Champion, Ben Crenshaw, was a revered putter and short game player. As a lad, he was only allowed to practice his short game with one ball, by his coach, Harvey Pennick. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of watching Tiger Woods practicing, you would see him hit all kinds of different shots. As part of his practice he tries to hit all the nine ball flights, i.e., low, medium and high draws, fades and straight ones. I think you get the message. Make your practice challenging!! If you look at the title to this article you will see that it has nothing to do with practice!!

Golf Academy

“Drive for Show - Putt for Dough” is, I suppose, one of the best known sayings in golf but is it strictly true? Shots Gained, a new way of measuring golf performance, says that it’s not. If you don’t know about Shots Gained, it’s basically a way of judging each shot against the average outcome of that shot. Shots better than average have a “positive strokes gained” while shots worse than average have a “negative strokes gained”. A survey was conducted of 240 golfers, who competed in at least 200 rounds on the PGA Tour between 2004 and 2012, to determine the average strokes taken, from every conceivable distance and situation from the tee to the green including putting. Who do you think was the number one in “strokes gained” in that period? You guessed it, Tiger Woods. Tiger gained a staggering 2.79 shots per round on the average Tour Player. A breakdown of this total showed that his strokes gained per round was as follows - driving was 0.58 of a shot, putting 0.63 and his approach to the green was 1.58 shots better per round. No wonder he was so dominant. If you want to read more on this fascinating way of looking at the game, you can buy a book called “Every Shot Counts” by Mark Broadie. Pictured : Tiger hitting a Stinger in 2007. More on Shots Gained next month. Martin Butcher
