BRING IT ON, RORY! RORY McIlroy went to Augusta to complete a career Grand Slam. But sensational Texan Jordan Spieth pulled on the fabled Masters green jacket - and said he was looking forward to locking horns with the Irishman in future. But this was not a brash, boastful statement from the 21-year-old after he broke record after record over four Masterful rounds to win his maiden Major.

This American is calm, thoughtful, articulate and modest. He finished six strokes ahead of four-time Major winner McIlroy, but said: ‘Rory’s got four Majors, something I can only dream about.
I know being the reigning Masters champion is going to carry a weight with it. I’m sure I’ll figure it out in the next year.’
On top of his 2013 U.S. Open win, Rose has now claimed eight top-10 finishes in golf’s showpiece events. He started the final day four adrift of Spieth, but only briefly cut the lead to three strokes, before the pivotal eighth and ninth holes. Rose missed a birdie putt on the par-five eighth and dropped a shot at the next while Spieth went par, birdie to open a fiveshot lead at the turn.
‘I got off to a good start,’ said Rose, who is 12 years Spieth‘s senior. ‘But the costly moments were not getting up and down from right of the eighth and three-putting the ninth.
Equality laws hit women’s golf - Alliss LAWS designed to give women equality have caused ‘mayhem’ among women golfers, says Peter Allis. The veteran golf commentator said: ‘I’m told the Ladies Golf Union has lost 150,000 members since equality for women came in.
‘Hundreds of women have left golf clubs because they’ve gone from paying half fare to full fare. It’s caused mayhem.’

Phil Mickelson, level with Rose, became a Majors runner-up for the 10th time, admitting he could not find the ‘something exceptional’ to take home a fourth green jacket.
‘I just got outplayed,’ he said: ‘I would have taken 14 under at the start of the week and thought that would have won it.’

She told BBC Radio 5 live: ‘Years ago maybe a lot of women did not go out to work, but now a lot of them earn their own money and I’m sure if they wanted to spend it on membership, it would not be a problem.’

The Gold Medal is the highest civilian award the United States Congress can bestow. Nicklaus is just the seventh athlete, and the third golfer, to be so honoured. Roberto Clemente, Joe Louis, Byron Nelson, Jesse Owens, Arnold Palmer, and Jackie Robinson have all been awarded the Congressional Gold Medal.

THE latest survey into the numbers of people playing golf has brought encouraging news for the sport.

Participation in Great Britain finally stabilised in 2014 after a decade of decline, according to the leading sports research company Sports Marketing Surveys Inc. Now the company – which supports the England Golf strategic plan to grow the game – is urging clubs to put more emphasis on the three Fs of fun, flexible, family. Richard Payne, Senior Manager of Sports Accounts at the company, said: ‘We have continuously stressed the importance of the three Fs. Following these latest figures, the industry must fully adopt this vision to convert beginners into regular golfers and to prevent the loss of more infrequent players.’ The latest review finds that just over 3.3million people played golf in Great Britain last year – and indicates that over 2.6m are involved in

Equipment sales in Britain have also levelled across most categories in terms of volume and value, suggesting the downturn is over. However the report also identifies the declining number of infrequent golfers – who play less than once a month - as a cause for concern. Time is a major factor influencing player numbers and may be the significant reason behind this.

Challenge Richard Payne said: ‘Whilst the 2014 figures give the golf industry reason to be more positive, the continued decline of infrequent golfers remains a challenge that needs to be overcome.’ England Golf’s strategic plan, Raising Our Game, urges all who care about the game to work together to increase the number of regular golfers and to halt the decline in club membership.

There are over 400 facilities offering opportunities for beginners, improvers and returners to the game and this year all golf clubs will be able to promote their sessions and membership offers on the website. County activity last year encouraged thousands of people to take up opportunities to learn and to play the game, according to England Golf research. In the six months to September 2014 over 24,000 took part in structured activity (59% increase) and more than 13,700 people became regular, once a week players (83% increase).

All of Nicklaus’ five children and 22 grandchildren were in attendance at the ceremony, as were Arnold Palmer, Johnny Miller and many others from the golf industry. Nicklaus took the stage last and touched on his worldwide competitive record, his work with the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital and the role his wife Barbara played in all of his success.
‘Yes, I just played golf,’ said Nicklaus, ‘but my whole life’s work was to make you all proud of me. I hope I have.’
Tiger stills aims for Ryder Cup UNITED States Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III says Tiger Woods is confident of qualifying for the 2016 team. Woods of contention for last year’s match at Gleneagles, taking a break from golf due to injury. The 39-year-old, now ranked 96, has started only two events this year and is on another break to regain form. Love told BBC Radio: ‘He’s expecting to make the team. He and I keep in touch a lot more than we have. He still has a good attitude and is working hard.’

DOWN MEMORY LANE Soon after I started playing golf in the early 1960’s, I was invited to visit a course in Shropshire, at the time it seemed crazy to me to travel so far from where I lived when there were so many excellent clubs right Michael Rees on my doorstep. The resulting visit changed my perception of the game, and I became an avid traveller, with my clubs in the boot. A fascination that grew as anyone who has read my columns will know.

The course in question was Hawkstone Park, where a budding talent was being nurtured by his father the club professional, his name is Sandy Lyle, and he brought fame to this previously little known golfing location. He won The Open Championship at Royal St Georges in dramatic fashion in 1985. His chip on the last green rolled back to his feet and he fell to his knees, thinking the Claret Jug was lost. However he got up and down and just held off Payne Stewart to win his first major title.
They were boyhood friends who became national heroes, Woosie the Welshman.and Sandy the Scot who grew up in England, and who together went on to share Ryder Cup honours into the bargain. Sandy and Woosie still play and attract the fans, and Sandy still visits his sister who lives in the village, a tale of the good guys.
His second, the Masters victory three years later is legendary, the bunker shot on the 18th hole that set up the putt which he rolled into the cup for the win over Mark Calcaveccia by a single shot.
Digressions over, golf courses in the area are of the highest order, superlatives have become so overused that they have lost their impact, but I can assure the reader that one of the first ports of call was a real “hidden gem”.
My return trips to Hawkstone since that early venture have been regular, for by chance our neighbours and oldest friends, moved to live in the village of Weston under Redcastle, which houses the hotel and the golf course. The visits also provided the opportunity to play the course often and many other clubs on my list of “must play”.
He danced around the green and hugged his caddy and friend Dave Musgrove, joyous celebrations so hard earned. the He was helped into his Green Jacket by defending Champion Larry Mize.
When Sandy Lyle was young he had stiff competition from a local lad who lived just down the road, competition that has lasted throughout their careers, and now into Seniors golf.
Ian Woosnam his long time golfing adversary would also enjoy that taste of success at Augusta, when he won in 1991, the picture of his kneeling clenched fist pose (see below) has become a classic image.
The challenger from just over the border in Wales was Ian Woosnam, who began his golf at Llanymynech Golf Club, just over the Welsh border, at Pant and that was the next destination.

The club is famed for it’s location, straddling the border, there are fifteen holes in Wales and three in England, and on the fourth hole you drive off in Wales and putt out in England. Once again the scenery is breathtaking, the course is set high on the hill, the site of a Roman Hill Fort. Offa’s Dyke forms one of the boundaries, and the views all round from the 12th tee extend to seven counties. The day we played, the sun shone and enhanced the total picture. The golf is a genuine test, with difficult par threes, particularly the tenth, which is over a wooded ravine, a par three here and it’s a pat on the back. The layout takes full advantage of the natural contours, elevated tees, plateau greens and doglegs to test shot-making to the full. A great day out, on a course that fully justified inclusion on my list of courses that must be played. So to Hawkstone Park which has two eighteen hole championship courses, the Hawkstone and the Championship, and there is also a sporty six hole par three academy course, which is ideal for a brief knock or to sharpen the short game. The old course is my special favourite, a parkland layout with some classic holes, holes bearing the names Ravine,

Prisoner’s Gate, Needles Eye, Lakeside, and the 18th, most appropriate, Alex’s Hame (a reference to Sandy’s father, who was the professional for so many years). The 9th is especially memorable, with the backdrop of the rugged cliffs and rock formations towering above. Not unduly long at just under 6500 yards, with a variety of features, but always a pleasure to play. The Championship course has been open for a few years now, and has hosted EuroPro Tour events, a testament to the quality. Longer and more modern in it’s styling it is a great contrast to the old course, though sadly is suffers during the winter or in particularly wet weather. Having said that, at the right time of year it can be equally challenging and very rewarding, especially if you like water birds which abound on the lakes and water courses. The clubhouse sits on the hill overlooking the eighteenth hole, a balconied design giving excellent views over the course, housing the pro shop and restaurant. An excellent trip, and with the information gleaned from my conversations with local golfers, one or two more additions to my own must play list, so instead of crossing one off, the list grows longer. It really is a tough life

Ladies’ union in talks over R&A merger GOLF’S governing body, the R&A, is in talks with the Ladies’ Golf Union over the prospect of a merger. They said in a statement that exploratory discussions are under way to achieve a closer relationship and the possibility of a merger. Both bodies are based at the Royal and Ancient Golf club of St Andrews which recently for the first time. The R&A runs The Open, major amateur events and international matches. Along with the United States Golf Association it also governs the game worldwide. The ladies’ union runs the Ricoh Women’s British Open and all aspects of ladies golf in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. St Andrews for the first time in its 260-year history in September when , Dame Laura Davies and Scottish amateur Belle Robertson MBE were among 14 women invited to join.

Hatchford Brook, Warwickshire, hosted a golf festival for local special educational needs schools run by students taking Applied Golf Management Studies at Birmingham University.
ENGLAND Golf has welcomed a new charter which aims to increase the number of active disabled people. The Charter for Change, from the English Federation of Disability Sport, outlines the key changes needed to ensure many more disabled people can reap the benefits of being active for life. Jamie Blair, the England Golf Disability Manager, said: ‘We believe that this framework emphasises the approach we are already taking with golf clubs.
‘We are engaging with disabled people, finding out what they want and including them within golfing activity at clubs and facilities.’ England Golf is currently working with 17 counties, identifying three clubs in each which offer a high quality experience of golf for disabled people wanting to take part.
‘We are encouraging these clubs to talk to disabled participants and find out what they want from our sport - whether it’s range based-activity or support to become a championship golfer,’ said Mr Blair. Club activities include: Padbrook Park, in Cullompton, near Exeter, ran a taster session for the Exeter Deaf Academy before Christmas and now sessions are being organised at the club. PGA professional Stuart Disney is completing an Effective Communications Course aimed at providing a better experience and integrate students into the club’s existing junior programmes.
Boringdon Park, Plymouth, is connected to the Plymouth Deaf Children’s Society and is planning a family day for May - a perfect opportunity for parents to be involved in activity with their children as well as offering the opportunity for all of the family to be involved in golf. Leamington and County, Warwickshire, has a wide network of connections to local special educational needs schools and hearing impairment units. Professional Paul Aitkens is also BSL Level 2 qualified and uses these skills in all his coaching, disabled or non-disabled. Victoria School pupils, pictured above, are regularly involved in golf, enjoying the fun of the game and all being able to participate together.
England Golf’s county network will support the MIND ‘Get Set to Go’ project which aims to get 74,000 people with mental health wellbeing issues active in sport. The EFDS Charter for Change asks that:
Everyone involved in providing sport or physical activity will support disabled people to participate. Disabled people will have the same opportunity as non-disabled people to be active throughout their lives. All communications about sport and physical activity will promote positive public attitudes towards disabled people’s participation.
RAISING DOUGH FOR CHARITY SURREY-based charity raised some serious dough when it held the British Bread Golf Open on the River Thames at Kingston, Surrey. Supported by funky golf clothing brand , the event saw members of the public donate £5 to charity and try to hit three dough balls into a floating golf hole. It raised almost £1,000 for the charity. Winner Ian Kirkpatrick laughed: ‘I’ve been playing golf for about 15 years now and that’s the best shot I’ve ever hit, so I’m going to be using dough balls in the future.’

Six of the best for Tomasz ENGLAND’S Tomasz Anderson, pictured above, has scored a record sixth win on the U.S. college circuit. Anderson, from Brocket Hall in Hertfordshire, was 11-under and four shots clear of his closest rival in the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate in Tennessee. The 22-year-old is a student at Jacksonville State University and his latest victory broke his own college record. His rounds of 69, 67, and 69 also helped his university to win the team title at the event. There are less than thirty golf courses in the whole of the county of Shropshire, a huge tract of land running along the Welsh border, Michael Rees but in that number there is such a diversity of courses that it would be hard to find a similar range in any other region. I sampled three of the most contrasting courses, which give an insight into what is available there, and what a unique amalgam.
SHROPSHIRE THE COUNTY OF CONTRASTS
For spectacular scenery, make a visit to Church Stretton Golf Club which sits high on Trevor Hill overlooking the town. It is also one of the highest golf courses in England located among the Longmynd Hills. It was long thought that the course was designed by James Braid, however It seems that both James Braid and Harry Vardon actually made subsequent improvements to the original design. Records show that in July 1898, J H Taylor and Harry Vardon did play a match over the links, proving it to be a club with a very rich history indeed.

Back to the present day, and the fun begins, a unique start of three par three holes, two of them climbing steeply and two with blind tee shots. Then a wind up the hill to the highest point, and I defy any golfer to continue without stopping to admire the view, particularly down the Carding Mill Valley, a famed beauty spot. There are severe changes in elevation, ravines to traverse, driveable par 4’s, and a wonderful downhill finishing par 3, providing a true golfing experience. It is only just over 5000 yards, but it was designed on land that would demand good shot making, and that it still true today, short yes, but a very good test, and the setting is an absolute delight. You will find it hard to forget the start and the finish at Church Stretton. If you like the natural game this is another course that must be high on the list of clubs to be played, in more senses than one. It is hard to imagine how anyone could look at this location and think of putting a golf course there, but they did and their ingenuity continues to reward us today. A superb golf course, a classic example of the creation of links from the natural landscape, wonderful panoramic scenery, and so many quirks that will bring back smiles as the visit is recalled. For lovers of natural golf this is an essential visit. In total contrast the golf club in Ludlow is adjacent to the race course, not an unusual situation in a number of locations around the countryside. The first assumption might be that the ground is relatively flat, and that would be true of the opening holes, though later in the round good use is made of the natural rise in the terrain to offer interesting challenges on the 9th and 10th holes. The race track and the imposing presence of the grandstand is set to the right of the clubhouse, a homely single story building housing the professional’s shop and the clubhouse. The race track is the boundary on the many of the early holes and it cuts

across the 3rd 9th 12th and 15th holes as the course winds it’s way out beyond the Ludlow road which bisects the course, and back to the clubhouse. This is parkland terrain which looks similar to heathland, it has been populated by areas of gorse and other native shrubbery that adds to the challenge and the colour. It proved to be an ideal holiday venue, not too long, and with receptive greens that putted well. The par 3’s are holes to remember, shots over water, into punchbowl greens each individual and challenging, particularly the back to back 13th and 14th. The finish to the front nine is another good hole, a dogleg right over the track to an elevated green protected by bunkers left and right. The par fours offer several birdie chances, but the driver needs to be working well to maximise the full opportunities, for on the shorter par fours the target is small. A most enjoyable venue, and a welcome waiting in the clubhouse, with a wholesome menu and well served ale.

The next stop was at Wrekin Golf Club, for great scenery and landscape, and another very different type of course. It was a return visit to the club, which has an undulating downland course set high on the Wrekin Hill overlooking the County of Shropshire. As you wind your way up the drive through an avenue of trees to the clubhouse, you are met with tranquillity and wonderful views. Although set on the hillside, the course is not particularly hilly, there are gentle undulations, and downhill holes where the elevation change is more severe. At just 5570 yards it is not long but it has no par fives, but there are six par 3’s, and although some of them are short (the 2nd is just 119 yards) they all need care from the tee. The 7th is the signature hole and is one to pop into the memory bank, aptly called The Pulpit it is played from a high tee to a fairway that drops down to the green 192 yards away. The finishing holes provide the best views, in particular the 13th, a high tee with panoramic views over Shropshire and the Welsh Mountains. The hole is a dogleg that requires a well placed drive and it is possible to cut the
corner to shorten the second into the green. A thoroughly enjoyable course, and with a table on the terrace for afternoon tea and teacakes, the seal is set on a perfect day. Shropshire has some wonderful towns, and Ludlow is a particular example, black and white timbered buildings, a market and the castle set at the top of the square, nooks and crannies, little alleyways that house some excellent eating places, a town to simply wander around at leisure. There are several National Trust sites, such as Powis Castle and Gardens, and Chirk Castle. The local countryside abounds with picturesque villages, and each seems to have a sign for the delicious cream teas, impossible to pass as late afternoon bodes. THE THOROUGHBREDS OF AUGUSTA The Resort goes green with great new green energy initiatives
Spring is here and The Dorset Golf Resort has never looked better! Many new paths and walkways have been created to take the typical wear the course experiences during the year. More trees have been planted to change the shape of a good few holes with many areas opened up improving the views and scenery around the course. But it’s not only the course that’s green, during the winter the whole Resort has gone green moving over to green energy! Having recently watched the Augusta Masters and the Grand National on the same weekend, it suddenly occurred to me of the similarity between golf and the equine world and it’s not just because both sports are played on courses. Now bear with me here, as you’re probably thinking this is a strange comparison but if you’ve ever watched the top players at Augusta you’ll appreciate how they have literately ‘mastered’ all aspects of the game and are the thoroughbreds of their sport. In fact you could say their phenomenal talent and versatility puts them in the same league as the Equine Olympians from the Eventing world because they’ve learnt patience, control, balance, precision and finesse; all the skills required for dressage. They’ve also shown stamina and endurance over tricky terrain (just like cross country), as well as bravery and superb judgement to tackle any obstacle they encounter (not dissimilar to the skills required for show jumping). Then there are our Golfing Professionals, the equivalent of the Working Horses, who week after week earn their living teaching golfers of all ages, abilities and sizes the techniques and intricacies of the game. If they are not teaching, then they are usually running the shop, so
unfortunately most of them fail to find time to escape and play the game they love. We also have tens of thousands of talented, low handicappers in the golfing world who also love the chase of a competition and just like good Race Horses; they frequently have the potential to gallop off with the occasional piece of silver ware. It’s refreshing to see the arrival of young Colts and Fillies enter the field and provide us with the entertainment and thrills and spill. So it’s not surprising that the 5 year old winner of this year’s Grand National, Many Clouds, and Jordon Spieth, the winner of the 2015 Masters (a mere 21 year old) are both amongst the youngest Champions of their events.
The Resort is utilizing two sources of green energy installing 2 biomass boilers and two large areas of solar panels. These are positioned to deliver power across the complex from the large air conditioned clubhouse and panoramic restaurant to the Golf Hotel & Bowls Arena.

However, it’s the Hackers who remain the mainstay of both worlds. They’re the ones who regularly plod along, breaking out into the occasional trot, ever hopeful of a stunning gallop down the back nine to the finishing line. New PGA tournament for Royal North Devon ENGLAND’S oldest links, Royal North Devon Golf Club, will host a brand new PGA golf tournament this year. The West of England PGA Masters will take place from October 6-7 with 36 of the PGA South West region’s leading players teeing up in a fifth and final Order of Merit event in 2015.

The top 30 in the regional standings following the West Region Championship at Chipping Sodbury Golf Club in August will be joined by six special invitees. They will bid for a share of the £10,000 prize fund and the honour of being the first to lift the JH Taylor Trophy in the 36-hole stroke play tournament.

Tributes to 90-year-old John, master golf coach
DORSET’S Kevin Brown has won the title of the Fuller’s London Pride Steward of the Year for England Golf’s South West region. Kevin, from Sherborne Golf Club, received his trophy at the annual presentation lunch at The Counting House in London, when the national and regional winners were celebrated. The competition to find and recognise England’s top golf club stewards was in its eighth year and attracted hundreds of votes for the nominated stewards. Mansell’s debut win at Weston ASHLEY Mansell celebrated his first outing on the South West PGA circuit by winning the opening leg in the four-event Titleist-Footjoy Assistants Sprint with the only sub-par round at windy Westonsuper-Mare. The 24-year-old first-year assistant at nearby Clevedon Golf Club said: ‘This was the best I’ve played for a few years. I was solid tee to green.’ The former Somerset county amateur, who spent a year on the Europro Tour before starting his PGA career, shot one-under 69. Andy Place, a former Devon amateur who has returned to the PGA ranks at Staddon Heights, was runner up on 70.
Kevin said: ‘This is a huge personal achievement and it’s just tremendous that the members appreciate what we do in trying to meet their needs.’ Kevin was noted by the judges for his flexible approach to the catering at Sherborne and his willingness to add new services, such as a café on the ninth tee offering halfway house refreshments. His approach has paid dividends both for the clubhouse takings and for the club as a whole. For example, he has attracted more social members to the club as a direct result of some of the private functions he has hosted. The quality of the food at Sherborne, together with Kevin’s ability to train and motivate his staff, came though repeatedly in his nominations - of which there were more than any other club in the South West. Winners received their trophies from England Golf Chief Executive David Joy and Richard Fuller, Fuller’s Corporate Affairs Director, who said: ‘Good hospitality is the cornerstone of any great golf club, and it is fantastic to see the best being recognised in this way.’

PETER Alliss was among those who paid tribute to John Jacobs OBE at a surprise 90th birthday celebration at Brokenhurst Manor Golf Club in Hampshire. And while surprise parties are not the norm for most 90 -year-olds, Jacobs (sitting down above) is no ordinary man he has a reputation as arguably the most influential golf coach of all time. His extraordinary achievements do not just lie with coaching, but reflect someone who carved out a great understanding of every aspect of the game. Jacobs’ career encompassed being a club professional and a successful tournament player, playing in the Ryder Cup in 1955 where he won both his matches. He was also a businessman who set up a string of golf schools in the UK and USA and brought the concept of driving ranges to Britain. Later he became Ryder Cup Captain in 1979 and 1981 and was instrumental in setting up the European Tour where he was its first chief executive.
But his real love was as a coach. Through his many books or videos or face to face, Jacobs helped golfers and coaches understand the modern principles of golf and of golf coaching. Whether it was the top players in the world or the enthusiastic amateur, he was able to see immediately their problem and with a few simple words explain to them gently how to make things better. Those simple words of advice belied the expertise and understanding that made him, in the eyes of his fellow coaches, the best in the world. At his induction into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2000, Butch Harmon said of him ‘John Jacobs wrote the book on coaching. There is not a teacher out here who does not owe him something’. Even now he is sought after by those who want to know a little more. Recent visitors to his cottage include Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley.

PRINCESS ROYAL MEETS THE GOLF GIRLS WHO CAN COACH ENGLAND Golf’s Lysa Jones and Sarah Bennett helped to turn the spotlight on sporting opportunities for women when they met the Princess Royal at the launch of the new campaign, This Girl Can Coach. The campaign is being run by Sports Coach UK and aims to boost the number of women in coaching and, in turn, increase the number of women taking part in sport. Gloria Golf Club, designed by renowned French architect Michel Gayon, is the largest Golf Complex in Turkey; with 45 holes comprising of the 18 hole Old Course, the 18 hole New Course and the 9 hole Verde Course. Gloria Old Course Disputably considered to be the best course this 18 holes is a Par 72 with a very respectable distance of 6,900 yards off the back tees, the Championship Old Course has been host to several European Tour Events becoming a firm favourite with golfers since it opened in 1997. The surroundings are quite stunning with swathes of Pine trees and seven fresh water lakes and the ever dominant Taurus Mountains as a constant back drop. There are not so many bunkers as some of the other Belek courses but those that are there are well positioned and seem to have magnetic qualities every time my ball went anywhere near. The fairways are always in great condition but the first cut can be quite demanding, the lush Bermuda grass can soon snag your club so the philosophy is quite simple keep your ball on the fairway! On all of the 54 holes at Gloria the greens are just superb, some say a little on the fast side but in my opinion just perfect, I can always find slow greens back in the UK. Gloria New Course Construction on the Gloria New Course, also 18 hole Par 72, started in December 2004, to be inaugurated in November 2005. The terrain is almost identical to that of its big sister the Old Course, but many differences soon become apparent, the fairways are wider and the course is much shorter, having said that the PGA were happy to use the Gloria New Course to host the European Seniors Tour Classic in 2007. Again the fairways are lined with Pine trees and 4 lakes regularly come into play, Gloria New Course is ideal for holiday golf, not too demanding

but still a great challenge especially off the back tees. The signature hole is the wonderful 17th, modelled on the 17th at Sawgrass, a picturesque par 3 that will stick in your memory for a good or bad reason that only you and your chosen golf club will determine. Gloria Verde Course / Select Course The Verde Course is a very demanding 9 hole challenge of golf, being a Par 35 with a distance of just over 3,000 yards, Verde course opened in 2001 with the intention of being mainly a practice facility but soon gained a deserved reputation of being one of the best 9 hole courses in Europe. To try and cover the ever-growing demand for more holes of golf in Belek the Verde course can now be played as the Select Course. This allows golfers to combine 9 holes on the Verde followed with 9 holes on either the Old or New course. Winter golf in the Algarve English winters are depressingly long and any excuse to escape to warmer climes is something keen golfers are eager to find - and I’m no exception. An unexpected invitation to spend a few days with friends in the Algarve last winter was an offer I couldn’t refuse and a perfect opportunity to investigate golfing opportunities in Portugal’s warm winter sunshine. It was late February and I was in desperate need of a break. So in no time I found myself flying to Faro airport and heading towards Boavista, a small village not far from Lagos - an area that boasts several excellent golf courses. As soon I felt the warm sun on my face I had to remind myself that only a few hours earlier I had been battling the winter elements in England. My first round of golf had been arranged at the famous Oceanico Golf Club where there are two excellent courses: the (Sir Nick) Faldo and (Christie) O’Connor junior. Although the O’Connor is purported to be less difficult, my hosts had opted to play the par 72 Faldo course, which admittedly, is difficult in parts but rewarding to play. Perhaps in retrospect I should have played this course last when I was more acclimatised to local conditions. I found Faldo’s course the most challenging with a variety of some very tricky and unusually designed holes to keep me on my toes. In many ways this reflects Faldo’s typical trademark designs. Some holes are set in ragged cacti countryside while others are in lush green English woodland. Fortunately tips gleaned from my hosts helped me tackle some of the course’s many challenging idiosyncrasies. The back nine are definitely the less demanding compared to the front nine, although quite hilly in places. Surprising myself, I managed to finish the round with a decent score equalling my handicap. The day was finished off with a delicious late lunch in the ultra modern palatial club house but be warned, green fees are expensive and it's best to book an early package on-line.
Next was the undulating Boavista course, a seven iron from where I was staying. This is a delightful par 71 course designed by Howard Swan, who has successfully managed to integrate the course’s undulating layout into the existing natural terrain. Altogether I found this a delightfully relaxing course to play and far less complex compared to the Faldo course I had played the previous day. The first par 4 hole gently slopes downhill passing a small lake with a decorative waterfall to the left of the green. It looks deceptively easy, and this is down to the designer’s creative ability in being able to hide unexpected obstacles. The next is a par 3 where strategically placed olive trees grow alongside the fairway, but a straight three wood drive should get you to the green which is what I managed and then I simply two putted to par the hole. The 3rd is an uphill par 5 and another deceptive hole and much depends on the lie of the second shot. This is where the fairway narrows and where intrusive trees could prevent a good line for the third shot. The final 18th par 4 hole is a tough uphill dogleg to the right with strategically placed bunkers. With the club house in sight,

thoughts of a cool beer clearly helped me to finish this hole in 6. These days most courses have signature holes, but the combination of design, location and the sheer variety of holes makes this almost impossible. Overall though, the course is a joy to play. By far my favourite course in this region is the Palmares course, the final course I played before returning to the UK. Palmare is renowned for its spectacular views over the bay of Lagos and combines link style golf for the first nine holes.

BRAMSHAW Golf Club is the oldest in Hampshire, and today an air of beauty and calm pervades this New Forest gem. But it has taken a very interesting and topsy-turvy historical route, having started as 9 holes carved out of a wealthy man’s back garden, becoming a club with two nine-hole courses more than five miles apart, and emerging as a club with two splendid courses of wonderful contrast carved out of the ancient landscape. The original course, now known as the Forest, was built in about 1865 by local resident/landowner Philip de Crespigny, for the entertainment of his weekend guests. It occupied land partly in his large garden at Roundhill and partly on Brook Common. There were no other golf courses in Hampshire at that time - and no record can be found to show that Philip de Crespigny had permission to build his! The many natural features of the New Forest, particularly the rise and fall of the land and the stream that runs through the far side of the course (named Kings Garn Gutter), made it easy to create golf holes of great and varied interest. Even today, the Forest course is a challenge for the skills of a seasoned links golfer.
The rich history of Hampshire’s oldest golf club
In the 1960s, Sir Oliver had a discussion with the then club professional, Wilf Wiltshire, on the concept of building a driving range at the back of the Bell Inn.
With another local landowner, John Jeffries, they formed Bramshaw Golf Club and Bramshaw Cricket Club (which is alongside the 18th fairway) in 1880, a fact documented in the R&A Handbook.
Modern golfers may moan about a long trudge from green to next tee, but members of the combined club, calling itself New Forest Golf Club, faced the unique feature of the front and back nine holes being more than five miles apart! The course at Brook Common was extended to 18 holes in the last century, and the

Sir Oliver Crosthwaite-Eyre was closely involved in both of these events and he and his family became owners of the Bramshaw Golf Club a couple of years later - a natural extension to The Bell Inn, which had been owned by the family since the 1870s. The club moved to the existing clubhouse in 1983.
No form of mechanical assistance was available to create the course, and most of the work was done either by hand or with the assistance of horses from local farms.
There were 14 entrants in its first ever Monthly Medal, which was won by Philip de Crespigny (playing off scratch) with a total of 174 for 36 holes. (By the third competition they reduced it to just 18 holes). In the 1890s, the club formed a partnership with a new local club at Lyndhurst, which itself had nine holes.

Wilf, with the canny eye of many a club pro, advised Sir Oliver that he did not think a driving range would be profitable and suggested using the land as a new 18-hole golf course. This was agreed and the new 18-hole mature parkland course, the Manor, opened in 1971. The course has undergone many changes since those early beginnings and now has a Par of 71 and a measured length of 6,400 yards.

Seven years later in 1952, the clubhouse moved to The Bell Inn just down the road and the following year it became a Private Limited Company.
Honorary Life Member, founder of the European Tour and former Ryder Cup Captain John Jacobs, has a long association with the club. He said: ‘Bramshaw Golf Club is a warm and friendly club that I have enjoyed coming to for many years, the two quite different golf courses are a joy to play for all abilities of golfer.’

GOLFING TREASURES IN THE THE moment your car crosses into the New Forest, it is like being transported to a different land and time. With these two assets, Bramshaw can rightly claim that it has two exceptional courses in the heart of the New Forest, a credit to Course Manager Jason Buckmaster and his team of nine greenkeepers. But golf clubs are not just about wellmaintained courses: Visitors and golf societies who are looking for something special will find that Bramshaw has not only two superb golf courses but also a friendly membership, very helpful staff - and even accommodation at an historic residential inn on the doorstep. The General Manager is Stuart James, who has been in the role for 16 months after a career in project management. Himself a single-figure handicapper, this year he celebrates the 40th anniversary of his first joining Bramshaw as a member.

The pro shop also offers a rather useful and unusual extra: it is an accredited Powakaddy Service Centre. Bramshaw’s drive to offer members, visitors and societies a continually improving experience is also in evidence on that historic old course, the Forest.

Being on land with protected status, the course cannot be changed without the approval of no fewer than five different authorities who oversee its care and maintenance. Bramshaw wants to change parts of the Forest course by taking it back to its historic design. The idea is to alter the yardage of two holes, rearrange the starting point of the course, and introduce a natural water hazard. This has become a project which it is hoped will conclude in 2017, and Bramshaw is hoping that the National Parks Authority will be the latest to give its approval. Mr James said: ‘This is all part of our target - to be the best proprietory golf club in Hampshire, as well as the oldest.’

Worth of note was the performance of Hannah Cusworth (Westridge) - from the Isle of Wight who playing in her first county competition and her first visit to a mainland course returned with the Douglas Cup which is an 18 hole event for handicaps 21 to 36.
HAMPSHIRE GIRLS ACADEMY - FUN ASSESSMENT DAY 42 girls mostly new to golf took part in the Fun Assessment Day on Saturday 28 March at Alresford GC which is an introductory programme prior to starting their six follow-up sessions over the summer. All enjoyed a great selection of activities including some golf and it was great to watch some already good swings. The emphasis of the Girls Academy is on fun and enjoyment supporting girls from Hampshire to get into this great game of golf. DISABLED GOLFERS AT BGL BIRCHWOOD PARK
Our first event in the BGL series “Race to Burhill” drew quite a crowd of some 26 golfers. We’re not sure who had the longest drive, Nick Ford from Devon, or Peter Colson-Osborne from Derbyshire – maybe it was our winner out on the course! As well as being part of the Race to Burhill this was the 3rd event in the Disabled Golf Association’s Order of Merit 2015. Facilities at Birchwood Park are spot on, as with all BGL courses they have a really well stocked pro shop; the catering was superb. Birchwood Park also has gym and beauty treatments and have the green light to build a 25m pool in the coming year. As well as a really great course, what makes it fantastic for our events for disabled/impaired golfers is the fleet of buggies and additional par-3 course, great for sharpening up your short game but also if we have anyone coming along who finds this better suited to their stage of development. Birchwood Park is clearly making the most of society bookings with two societies going out after us and a formal function in the

Ten women golfers – led by Dawn Hodge from the Isle of Wight – are heading to England Golf’s Grand Medal Final after they booked their places in qualifying.
They’ll play off with qualifiers from five other events to find the country’s top handicap golfer at the Grand Medal Final at Frilford Heath in Oxfordshire on Thursday, 13 August. It will be a feature of the new Golf Week festival, staged by England Golf to create a national grand finale for a host of handicap and team championships.

The qualifiers were among more than 100 women club winners who took part in the South regional medal final at Royal Blackheath in Kent, which was the first England Golf championship event of the 2015 season. All the regional finalists had returned the best four scores at their club in the England Golf Medals during 2014. Dawn Hodge (pictured) played under her 11handicap for a net score of one-under 71 to win the event and claim her place in her first national final. “It will be brilliant, absolutely fantastic,” she said. “I’m not used to playing in big competitions and it’s been a brilliant experience. You don’t normally have tee markers and a giant scoreboard at club competitions and it makes you feel special!”
Dawn, who has been playing golf for just over four years, made a good start to her qualifying round, but then had a triple bogey on a par three.

LEGENDS OF THE GAME... NEIL COLES MBE - MR CONSISTENCY In the year 2000, Neil Coles made the headlines in the sporting press when he won the Jersey Open. What was remarkable was that he had not only won a professional tournament at the age of 65, but that it meant that he had been an individual winner in six consecutive decades, the only golfer ever so to do. It also made him the oldest tour winner, a record he improved upon when he won the Laurence Batley Seniors Tournament two years later when he was 67 year old. A model of consistency and dedication to the game. He had hit the headlines several years before when he reached the final of the World Matchplay Championship. It was 1964 and he faced Arnold Palmer at the height of his career, and after twenty one holes he was three up, only to be caught at the end after a superb battle. Arnie described his win as “Hard fought” which indeed it was. Neil Coles had a career of achievement, one that could have been so much greater but for his overpowering fear of flying. This meant that he would only travel by land or sea, with a devastating impact on his international opportunities, and almost totally deprived him of competitive golf in the USA. In fact when he travelled for Ryder Cup matches he had to leave by sea ten days early to be there for the opening ceremony. Neil Chapman Coles was born in 1934, he turned professional when he was just sixteen years of age, with a handicap to match.
An impossible concept today, but possible in 1950. In his own words he explained that his father owned a large leather company, so he could afford to learn on the job.
His record is quite amazing, his total of European Tour wins numbers 45 (counting the equivalent events prior to the formation of the Tour in 1972).
So he did, but it took him eleven years to win his first event, the Coombe Hill Assistants Championship, but having tasted success, he proceeded to repeat the experience throughout his career.
He also won nine European Tour Senior events, plus four times becoming the PGA Seniors Champion and in 1987 won the Senior British Open Championship. Although he never won a major, he finished in the top ten in The Open Championship five times. His achievements were recognised when he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2000, an event he sadly had to miss because of the fear of flying, the only inductee who did not attend. He was made a Life Member of the European Tour in 2004, just reward for years of dedicated service for his fellow professionals. He was one of the Founding Fathers of the European Tour, supporting new Supremo John Jacobs in the early years, his role as Chairman started in 1975 and continued until he stood down in 2013. He was the ideal image for the game, unflappable, dignified and above all a diplomat coming to the fore whenever the situation demanded. On top of all his personal achievements he was also a great team member, with eight Ryder Cup appearances between 1961 and

1977, second only to Nick Faldo. He represented England in the World Cup twice, The Henessy Cognac Cup four times, the Double Diamond five times and the European Cup twice. Neil Coles has also been very successful with his golf course design company, a venture that he runs with his son Gary. He brought his experience of playing the greatest courses to the business which has created some of the finest courses, and has been involved in work at West Byfleet, Coombe Hill, PGA Catalunya, Slaley Hall and numerous others across Europe. When he stood down as Chairman of the Tour, tributes came from every quarter, the most telling was made by John Jacobs, who said “Neil has been the bedrock of the Tour. There was no better man to be Chairman, he was totally unflappable, one hundred percent committed and commanded the respect of everyone in the game”. Neil Coles was a golfer who earned and retained the respect and admiration of his fellow professionals and all the other people who encountered him as a player or administrator. The man who looks more like an Archbishop than a golfer is indeed A Legend of the Game.

A collection of the UK’s top golf travel trade and media were on hand to help Golf Ireland launch its much-anticipated new golf season in style with its 2nd St Patrick’s Golf Day at Goodwood this month. Journalists from some of the country’s top national, golf and online publications joined key figures from leading golf travel companies including Your Golf Travel and Golfbreaks.com and Irish representatives for a fun-packed day at the famous West Sussex venue. AKABUSI SPARKS AWESOME CHARITY SPEEDGOLF CHALLENGE Former World, European and Commonwealth Games champion Kriss Akabusi was quick off the starting blocks to help children’s medical research charity Sparks and funky clothing brand Royal & Awesome sound the gun for the inaugural Sparks SpeedGolf Challenge. New for 2015, the event is challenging golfers to show their rivals a clean pair of heels and complete 18 holes of golf as fast as they can, with all UK golf clubs eligible to take part. Former 400m hurdles star Akabusi is fronting the race against the clock, which is taking place throughout the summer, with Scotland’s most colourful clothing brand Royal & Awesome providing prizes for some of the country’s top performers. SpeedGolf is a faster, more athletic version of golf which involves playing a round in the lowest possible number of shots, combined with the time taken to run the golf course. For example, shooting a round of 90 in a time of 70 minutes and 21 seconds would give a Speedgolf score of 160.21. Golfers are encouraged to pledge £10 and challenge fellow club members for local bragging rights at the top of the clubhouse scoreboard, or, alternatively, invited to compete in the national leaderboard against golfers across the UK. Akabusi, who won ten medals at major championships during a glittering track career including five golds, said:“Good luck! In celebration of his 80th Birthday, Calcot Park member, Kenny Campbell, arranged a friendly 4-ball match with some close friends at Calcot Park Golf Club in Reading. When he turned up to play, he was greeted by some 40 more of his friends who turned his ‘quiet’ celebration into a memorable, surprise golf day with a birthday dinner afterwards. One wonders what odds Kenny, a retired (nearly) Bookmaker, would have put on that happening.
Dummer Golf Club outgoing Ladies and Men’s Captains – namely Rosemary Verrall and Rob MacSephney – enlisted the help of member David Hall to hand over the proceeds of their efforts over the past year to their joint charity – Prostate Cancer UK. Via a number of well attended Captain’s Days and other special events, members at Dummer in Hampshire helped raise £3500.00. Prostate cancer survivor David was pleased to hand over the cheque to charity representative and fellow survivor – David Dibben. After a short speech, highlighting how many men the disease affects, namely 1 in 8 and the continuing need for research and awareness, David thanked the Dummer

88TH ROEHAMPTON LADIES’ OPEN GOLD CHALLENGE CUP The Pro’s Have It The scores reflected the cool, blustery conditions prevailing at Roehampton on Saturday when 54 women golfers, professionals and amateurs, from all over the country assembled to play two rounds over the parkland course in south-west London. There was no relief during the day as the greens became ever faster and more firm in the drying wind. This year it was the turn of the professionals to collect the top three prizes. Twenty-six year old Hannah Ralph, professional from Cowdray Park in West Sussex, produced two excellent rounds of 73 and 80 for a total 153 to come home the winner of the Gold Cup. Hannah has competed regularly in the event in recent years and bettered the second place she achieved in 2013. Hannah enjoys combining teaching golf to all ages at Cowdray Park with playing competitive golf when her diary permits.
Emma Goddard from Royal Liverpool was 2nd on a count back from Rebecca McGinley, Wearside, both professionals on 154. Leading the amateur charge was Lizzie Prior from Burhill, playing off +2 and runner-up in the recent Surrey County Championships, in fourth place on 155 (78,77). Continuing the saga of a late-convert golfer’s search for glory on the greens. . . LET me explain it this way. If life were a golf-course, then we would be well into the back nine and heading for the clubhouse. To be more exact, we would probably be halfway down the 17th, stuck in a bunker, and attempting to adjust to the sudden realization that the sand-iron is in the boot of the car. Don’t forget, we are the bus-pass boys, the seniors. Occasionally, we are struck by the uncomfortable thought that perhaps our best golf is behind us. As I say, it doesn’t occur to us very often, and not for very long, which is one of the blessings of a shaky memory. With the passing of the years, we have become more philosophical about this, the most gentlemanly, of games. You know what we say? ‘It matters not who won or lost…’ We do say it. Frequently. We also say, with a light laugh, that it’s the taking part that matters and that old favourite, it’s only a game. Lies, every one of them.

One of my golfing chums is so finely tuned that he can hardly put club to ball unless there is money to be won. It may only be fifty pence, but he will play for it as though it’s the World Cup. ‘Otherwise, what’s the point?’ he says. I know another chap who always takes advantage of winter rules to place his ball. In ten years, I have never known him place it further from the hole. Somehow it always ends up an inch or so further down the fairway. And there was an incident on the eighth when violence almost broke out.

As far away as the 14th, they said, you could hear the F word, and they weren’t shouting ‘Fore!’ Good sense prevailed and tempers cooled. As one of them said later: ‘These implants cost a bloody fortune and I’m not leaving them on the tee.’ But remember when you see the smiling old jossers, the drive to win burns as brightly as ever. As that old saying goes: ‘It matters not who won or lost, But how you placed the blame.’

They founded Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service, a local charity which for the past four years has provided the Alexander’s Care Team, delivering palliative care, respite and support to children with lifelimiting and life-threatening conditions in their own homes across Berkshire and the surrounding areas. In November 2013 they launched the capital campaign to raise £5m to build a truly local children’s hospice so that families can access the care and support they need within their local community. Preparations are underway and building will begin this year. Fiona Devine says “Our home from home will be a place of love and laughter, a special place to make special memories. It’s about children being children, in a safe environment; a place
where parents feel they can safely be with their children, a secure, safe, loving environment, where no judgements are made. Even very sick children enjoy having an exciting, stimulating place to play and laugh with their brothers, and sisters, friends and family.” We need your help to build a local children’s hospice. Gain Yards in The Two Plane Swing the Garden Last month I showed you a picture of the late, great Ben Hogan, who was a one plane swinger coming into impact.
You don’t need to bash balls for hours on the range to really make an impact on your game. Follow this back garden practice plan and see your ball disappear STRAIGHT down those fairways!
Early in his career he suffered from a hook, which he eradicated by learning to square the clubface to the club path prior to impact. With the club face approaching the ball in this fashion, Hogan avoided a late, rapid closure of the club into impact.
BACK LAWN LONG GAME PRACTICE:
Because the element of timing was taken away, Hogan was able to play near flawless golf every time he competed. His record in 1953 stands testament to that. He won five of the six tournaments that he entered that year. Three of those wins were Majors – The Open, The Masters and the US Open. He didn’t play in the USPGA that year as it clashed with The Open.
• Take time to reflect: Checking your posture is perfect is hard when you can’t see yourself on the driving range. Set yourself up where you can see your reflection in the garden and fine tune that position. Get ready to run somewhere and ensure you are tipped over from your hips. You can also check your backswing by facing the reflective surface or having it behind you so you can check your swing from down the line. Then just swing and LOOK! By seeing yourself as you swing you will become more aware of what it is that you are doing. It is so much easier to make adjustments when you have that visual aid.
Many of today’s stars employ a similar release pattern to the one that Hogan used. McIlroy and Stenson are included in that number. So the advantage of a one plane type action is that it is possible to get the clubface square to the path, as Hogan did!
• Two tee attack…. 2 tees a club head apart. Set-up to the back one and hit them both. You will miss the front one if you are not getting your weight through the ball properly. This drill can be done with daisies too and it will help anyone who tops the ball.
Before we get to the two plane swing, a bit about what actually produces a straight shot. A straight shot is produced when the clubface is square to the path on which the club head is travelling. When the path and the face are not square to each other, sidespin is produced.
• Upside down - swish it all about. Hold a garden cane or your driver upside down and make swings. The swishing noise should happen through the impact zone. If it happens from the top of your swing or it is a low drone you are losing power. Get those wrists working and listen for that whoosh. • Whip it!!! The Orange whip training aid will add yards to your drive and elegance to your follow through. This aid lengthens your through swing adding power where it’s needed most. Swish the grass or a tee peg and get through to a finish. The Orange Whip will help with this!! You can also see yourself in the windows to get a really good idea of whether you look the part or not!!
Now what about the two plane swing. The disadvantage of the two plane swing is that through the impact area, the face of the club is only square to the path for a very small amount of time indeed. This means that hitting the ball consistently straight is almost impossible. This is why the great players who employ this type of action have to shape the ball to be consistent.

Some hit a fade like Jack Nicklaus and Colin Montgomery and some go with the draw like Tom Watson. Bubba Watson, (pictured - on the other hand hits big slices and hooks). When Bubba was asked what his least favourite hole at Augusta was, he replied that it was the eighteenth, because it required him to hit a straight ball from the tee and he doesn’t hit a straight ball.

This is why it could be a mistake for a two plane swinger to try and zero out Trackman in an effort to hit a straight ball. So if you are a two plane swinger – a swing where arms are more upright than the shoulders, your strategy when playing golf is to use sidespin. You have to play with either a draw or a fade. When setting up to hit your curved shot, you have to allow for the fact that you may accidently hit a straight ball. For instance if you play with a bit of a cut and you are hitting into the green, it would be a mistake to aim towards a bunker in an effort to get near the pin. In this case the straight ball would be a disaster. Just remember, the straight ball mustn’t hurt you!! The legendary Jack Nicklaus used a great strategy, he aimed at the middle of the green and he moved the ball towards the pin. If he hit a straight one it would finish in the centre of the green. Next month – Some golfers are a mix of a one and two plane swing. For these players there is only one combination that works effectively.
