How could it be otherwise? The King, who died at the age of 87, made golf a global sport from his emergence in the 1950s, and held a unique place in the game. Palmer was known as Arnie to his legion of fans and as Mr Palmer to younger professionals who revered him. He won 22 or his 33 matches in the Ryder Cup, along with seven Majors and 62 PGA Tour victories. He was the first golfer to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom. His name was invoked during United States team talks before this year’s event, and players found Palmer’s golf bag awaiting them on the first tee at Hazeltine. It clearly fired them – they went out and whitewashed Europe.

Arnold Palmer • From Page 3 Fellow golf great Jack Nicklaus, whose sporting rivalry with Palmer lasted more than half a century, was also among those gathered in Palmer's hometown to celebrate his life. Nicklaus told the congregation: ‘I hurt like you hurt. You don't lose a friend of 60 years and don't feel an enormous loss.’ Private planes descended on Arnold Palmer Regional Airport - which was named after the legend in 1999 – and during the service Palmer’s personal plane circled over the college, tipping its wing in tribute. Tiger Woods said: ‘Thanks Arnold for your friendship council and a lot of laughs.’ The US Golf Association called him ‘golf's greatest ambassador’. President Obama posted a photo of a lesson Palmer gave him in the Oval office at the White House. Colin Montgomerie said: ‘A great loss to golf. He and manager Mark McCormack took the marketing world by storm and produced the PGA Tour - and the Champions Tour.’ Palmer was the first sportsman to use his fame to build a business empire, through an array of commercial ventures. He put his name to products and services, including United Airlines, Cadillac cars, Rolex watches, Hertz car rental and Callaway golfing products. The effects of his vision spilled over into other sports including tennis. Sports sponsorship expert Nigel Currie said: ‘He had the good looks, and affable persona and smile, as well as golfing ability, to become the template for what every successful sports endorser should be.’ And a final tribute came in the inimitable style of golf commentator Peter Allis. He said of Palmer: ‘He had all the human frailties. He enjoyed a drink or three, liked the shape of a well-turned ankle, and didn’t tell everyone he lived on a handful of nuts.’

On the tee, our MPs (Members for Putting and Pitching?) MEMBERS of Parliament and peers have been invited to Get into Golf and become champions for the grassroots game in their constituencies. Golf was one of the sports showcased at the inaugural Parliamentary Sports Fair. It was organised by the Sport and Recreation Alliance as part of the #GetYourKitOn campaign, which urges continued investment in grassroots sport and recreation to create an active nation. The All Party Parliamentary Golf Group encouraged decision-makers to have a go at golf, to find out about England Golf's Get into golf campaign and to learn about the health and well-being benefits of the game. They were given a fun introduction to the sport by Community Golf, which offers opportunities for disadvantaged and disabled people to play golf in Surrey and parts of Sussex, Kent and London. Richard Shaw, director and founder of Community Golf, said: ‘The day was fantastic and we had around 40 MPs and Peers have a go at our stand! We were certainly one of the busiest stands, which is fantastic for our sport.’

Parliamentarians also heard about the Get into golf campaign, run by England Golf and supported by Sky Sports, which inspires more people to play the game and enjoy a sociable sport with many health benefits. According to the Sport and Recreation Alliance, the cost of health related conditions associated with inactivity, including obesity and diabetes, is costing the nation £7.4bn each year. Golf, the fifth most-played sport in England, has a tremendous reach across all backgrounds and abilities and can support

the Government’s sports strategy to tackle inactivity. In a 9-hole round golfers will walk two to three miles, take over 5000 steps and burn over 450 calories – all within a couple of hours. It’s a sociable sport and studies show it can help people live longer, reduce their stress levels, and improve their self-esteem. England Golf Chief Executive Nick Pink said: ‘Golf makes a huge contribution to the Government’s agenda to promote an active and healthy lifestyle.’

COUNTY WOMEN MAKE A BIG SPLASH GLOUCESTERSHIRE are the English Women’s County Champions for the first time – and their victory at Waterlooville Golf Club was the signal for celebrations, tears and a drenching for their captain. Andra Knight was soaked by her ecstatic team (Leaderboard Photography picture right) as they got their hands on the trophy for the first time after winning a tight match against Yorkshire 5-4. They’ve finally achieved their goal on their sixth consecutive appearance at County Finals and Knight said: ‘I can’t believe we’ve done it, I’m overwhelmed. What a team! They have gelled together all week and they just fought and fought and fought.’

Watson triumphs in a late-season double MICHAEL Watson must be wishing the season was just starting instead of just finishing after his second successive win, writes Peter Godsiff. The Wessex Golf Centre player claimed a two-shot victory in the Tehidy Park Pro-am with a five-under-par 66. This followed success alongside John Bickerton at Burnham and Berrow in his previous outing. A member of the winning PGA Cup team in California a year ago, he has not reached his

most consistent form this season and his only regional win this summer was in the Dudsbury Masters pro-am in June.

. . . l e v a r T l l i W s b u l Have C THE MAGICAL TROIA PENINSULA The Trent Jones Trail Stage two of our Iberian adventure on the Trent Jones trail from the north to the south of Portugal necessitated an early start to the day. Our destination – Troia golf course, which is Michael Rees located on a peninsula a short ferry ride from the port of Setubal. This busy port was the birthplace of The Special One, Jose Mourinho, currently manager of Manchester United. The drive from Cascais to Setubal is about seventy five kilometres, across the bridge over the River Tagus and directly south. From the port, the car ferry crosses the Sado River to the sandy peninsula and takes about twenty five minutes, and if you are observant you may well see the large pod of bottlenose dolphins which are resident in the Setubal lagoon, and often entertain the passengers as the crossing progresses. Once across the stretch of water, it is not far to the golf club, a breath-taking location with the dramatic backdrop of the Arrabida Mountains Nature Reserve and the Atlantic Ocean. The golf course ranks number nineteen in Europe, but because of the somewhat isolated location it is very rarely crowded. It is a masterpiece in course design by the American course architect Robert Trent Jones Snr, who was overjoyed when he was presented with this stretch of dunes land on which to build and create a golf course. On this special terrain he has designed a classic, with narrow fairways, small greens, strategic bunkering and lots of pine trees. The opening holes run out to the sea, the first memorable for the lake and the modernistic sculptured water feature, then the holes follow the coastline, with spectacular panoramic views of the sea, which is visible from many of the holes. The

first sighting is from the 3rd tee, and continues for several holes before turning back to the clubhouse. The back nine is the longer of the two, and features more doglegs to test the accuracy of the driver, and you may be forgiven by being distracted by some of the fabulous properties which are adjacent to the course, one of which belongs to the Mourinho family, a truly idyllic location. The back nine winds down to the ocean with a variety of individualistic holes to test every club in the bag, a common assessment from those who played, before the final hole, a par five which doglegs right then left before reaching the last putting surface. The signature hole is reckoned to be the 3rd, with fabulous sea views and it is considered by Trent Jones Snr to be one the best he ever designed; recognition indeed. The golf course fully deserves its constant high ranking among European courses, it is in first class condition with excellent greens and has hosted numerous European Tour events, international amateur championships, and from the tiger tees it is a supreme test of golfing ability. When the Portuguese Open was held in 1983 the winning score carded by Sam

Torrance was only two under par, and the cut was made at twelve over, ample evidence of the toughness and the challenge of the links when set up to test. For those wishing to play more than one day on the Troia Peninsula there is a four star Aparthotel at the Troia Resort close by. However the simple fact is that the drive from Lisbon to Troia is worth every kilometre when you see the course, which is definitely one to savour. For the nature lover the pristine peninsula is a virtual paradise, a treasure trove of bird life which is abundant all around, the sighting of a marsh harrier and a purple heron the highlights of a rewarding few moments spent observing between golf shots. For those interested in history, the renowned Phoenician and Roman ruins close by date back to the first half of the 1st Century, with fish salting workshops and residences well preserved; a fascinating insight to the world of ancient Rome and the capacity of the empire to expand throughout Europe. After a wonderful day on the golf course, and the hospitality of our excellent hosts, it was

time to leave and set off for the drive to The Algarve and our next destination on the Trent Jones Trail. Ace Gerry beats odds

THE three-man team from Hayling in Hampshire staged a tremendous late charge to win the English Champion Club title by two shots at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club, on the Suffolk/Essex border.

A MAN has defied odds of more than 12,500 to one to become only the fourth blind golfer in history to hit a hole in one. Gerry Kelly, 75, only realised what had happened after searching the green for the ball and being unable to find it. He said he was ‘totally dumbfounded’ when it was eventually discovered in the 12th hole of the Montrose golf course. Gerry, who only took up golf when he started going blind, relies on his wife, Mary, pictured with him above, to help him line up shots.

After the first round on the Gainsborough course, Toby Burden, Richard Harris and Kevin Hickman were 19-over par, in 16th place and 14 shots behind the halfway leaders, Woburn. On day two, they were still 19-over after completing 27 holes, but they zipped through the final nine in a team total of eight-under and rocketed to the top of the leaderboard. Burden and Hickman both went round in four-under 67 while Harris added level par 71 for a total of 11-over par . They finished two clear of Worksop, Nottinghamshire, and Woburn, from Berks, Bucks & Oxon, who tied on 13-over par. Spalding, Lincolnshire, and Henbury, Gloucestershire, were a further shot back. It was Hayling’s first victory in this prestigious England Golf championship and set up the team to represent represent England in the European Men’s Club Trophy at Aroeira Golf Club, Portugal.

‘I didn’t really know what my team-mates were doing. I just focussed on my own game and did what I could to see if we could come first. I played solid and didn’t make any mistakes’- Kevin Hickman, who was one-over on day one but completed the Hayling fightback with a bogey-free 67

Harris remarked: ‘Everyone at the club is really happy and excited.

For me, I’m still asking if it’s really happened because we were so far behind after the first round – and now we’ll be representing England!’ Burden was first to stake their claim, and his 67 improved on his opening round by 11 shots. Hayling is a links course and, with Friday’s practice round washed out by heavy rain, he had initially struggled to adapt to the hilly, tree-lined course where water is a feature.

Battling Hampshire take counties second place Then, English champion Dan Brown was beaten 3/2 by Hampshire’s Mark Burgess and Yorkshire’s hopes of that extra point were pinned on the close match between Will Whiteoak and Hampshire captain Martin Young.

YORKSHIRE won the English Men’s County Championship for the 21st time, beating Hampshire 5.5-3.5 in a final day showdown at Sandwell Park in Staffordshire. Although Yorkshire dominate the list of past winners, this was their first victory for nine years and the victory was sweet, especially after the boys’ and women’s teams narrowly lost their county finals. The result meant disappointment again for Hampshire, who have now come away empty-handed from seven County Finals since 2002. ‘We knew we’d have to improve by about eight shots,’ he said after signing his card. ‘I’ve done four of them!’ Harris was next and his 71 and also improved on his first day score by 11 shots. He was on the closing holes when he learned from the on-course scoring that the team was in contention and despite the nerves he birdied the long 16th and pulled off a great par save from 25 yards right of the 18th.

‘When we started playing we were just going to shoot the score and see what happened. But the pressure starts to build when you know you are in contention,’ he said. Finally Hickman, who was one-over on day one, completed the fightback with his bogeyfree 67: ‘I didn’t really know what my teammates were doing, I just focussed on my own game and did what I could to see if we could come first. I played solid and didn’t make any mistakes.’

he classis design of the North Euston Hotel in Fleetwood dominates the sea front; the classic crescent shaped building is the epitome of Victorian grand architecture, as it looks out over the sweeping sands of Morecombe Bay. The majesty of the structure is evident, but the importance it has in the heritage of golf is huge and very little known, a hotel that had a history of military significance, when acquired by the Monistry of Defence, it became North Euston Barracks. I first stayed at the hotel as a consequence of a friend, Ian Shewin, who is a member of Fleetwood Golf Club, and when invited to stay and play I knew little of the club history. That situation would soon be changed, and my appreciation of the importance of this seaside location changed..

On my latest visit I had the privilege of meeting and talking with Malcolm Clegg the researcher and author of the 150 years of Military and Golfing Links at Fleetwood, a meticulous study with detailed information which provided me with the means to write this article. An extract from London Society Vol 5 1864 which sets the scene reads as follows:

One fine morning we received a letter from a young friend inviting us to go north and visit him at the School of Musketry Fleetwood, where he was quartered – an aspirant to qualification as a musketry instructor. The Fleetwood Chronicle reported that over four hundred officers and men would arrive in May 1860 for rifle practice. That simple statement may not be significant in itself, but among those officers were two who would have a dramatic effect on golf in the north of England. The local journal reported that Lt Arthur Campbell Walker (Queens Own Cameron Highlanders) billeted at Euston Barracks had organised a Fleetwood Golf Club, and described the links in the immediate vicinity of the barracks. He had a distinguished military career, and when he subsequently moved to Northumberland he was also instrumental in

The second officer was not a Scot, but from Alfpuddle in Dorset, his name was Captain Alfred Waldy, like Lt Campbell he had served during the Indian Mutiny and in the Crimean War, and both were well decorated. The two officers had competed in an organised golf competition in November 1861, on the Fleetwood Links, and as winners they were both awarded silver cups, each of which bore the inscription “Palma qui meruit ferat” (the hand that deserved it) and the golfer’s badge of crossed clubs and a golf ball. A complete and fully documented description of the earliest organised golf club event in the north of England. A newspaper description of the first hole on the promenade course refers to striking the opening drive over an old magazine which endorses the military activity in the Warren area of the town So as Fleetwood became famed as a military centre, with two rifle ranges, a floating target range and artillery batteries which fired out to sea, the town was transformed, with many visiting regiments and volunteer yeomanry. At the opening of the new Fleetwood Dock there was a grand procession, this grand parade include the military bands of 1st Dragoon Guards, the 15th Regiment, Accrington Volunteers Band, 3rd Royal Lancashire Militias, the Military Band and the Artillery Volunteer Band, it must have been some parade. Sadly golf did not survive at Fleetwood with the changing of personnel, and ceased to exist in 1867, when the school of musketry was relocated at Hythe in Kent. However it was resurrected, when a new club was formed in 1893 by a

group of townsfolk, and the Centenary was celebrated in 1993.The present site was chosen following disastrous flooding in the town and it became the home for the club and the new course was designed by James Freer, the professional at nearby Blackpool South Shore. It was located on the original rifle ranges, the range that became a course, and the 5th hole which runs alongside the sea wall is aptly titled The Butts in remembrance of the use to which it was put for many years, and typical of such recognition used by other courses around the United Kingdom with similar military history, Tenby, Hayling and many others. The military, and Scottish Regiments in particular, have been tremendous propagators of the game of golf, not only in Great Britain but around the world. Garrisons posted to far regions had officers with golfing pedigrees and they quickly arranged to have their sport provided for, wherever they may be. Fleetwood is rightly proud of the military history, both relating to the club and course and also with the North Euston Hotel, now restored to its original purpose, but which during the use as a School of Musketry, gave birth to golf on the Wyre peninsula. Today the club is a thriving members club, with a first class links course, with true fast greens and fairways a delight to play from, perhaps a little out of the way for travellers but worth every mile when you get there. The welcome starts as soon as you arrive in the Pro Shop, with professional Dan Skelcher and his team ready to ensure you enjoy the visit. My trips to Fleetwood and the golf club have been very rewarding, fascinating as an addict to golf history, satisfying for the enjoyment of the excellent golf course, and gratifying for the welcome and the marvellous friendships that have arisen as a consequence. A destination I would recommend to any golfer who relishes visiting pastures new, and one that is not too far from the delights of the other Lancashire courses which inhabit The Open Championship rota. STILL GOING STRONG AT ROWLANDS CASTLE

With the evenings closing in and the golf season slowly drawing to an end I can think of no better time to reflect on just how successful the ‘2016 Four Seasons Senior Men’s Championship’ has been in its inaugural year.

Peter Klepacz the popular PGA Professional at Rowlands Castle Golf Club, is not only the longest serving professional in the club’s history, but also one of the longest serving in the south of England, having just completed his 36th year of service to the club. Having just completed his 36th year of service Peter was one of the first professionals to complete the PGA training diploma, qualifying in 1970. Since then he has built a very good reputation locally not only for teaching, where he estimates having given over 100 000 lessons in his career, but also for his knowledge of golf equipment and custom fitting. Working with his son Jimmy, he also boasts one of the best stocked pro shops in the area. Having been a relatively late starter to golf, first starting to play at the age of 16 Peter’s progression was rapid receiving his first official handicap of 8, and progressing as low as +5 before turning pro. He started his professional career at Guildford golf club, where he was assistant to the renowned club maker Tom Turner, who trained Peter to be an established club maker in his own right. During his early career, although with the tournament structure in the 1970’s very different from todays, Peter did enjoy success on a national level, and to supplement his playing he would often work on the local ‘fruit and veg market’ or painting fire engines at the Denis’s factory in Guildford. After Guildford, Peter moved to Moor Place, in Esher, where he worked with the established teacher Patrick ‘Teach’ Tallack. This is where his passion for teaching really started. Also working alongside him at Moor Place was British open ladies champion and renowned author Vivian Saunders. After a relatively short stay at Moor Place, Peter moved to develop his teaching knowledge further, to work with the legendary John Jacobs at Sandown Park, in Surrey. After only 18 months, he left to become the youngest club professional in the country at Ampfield Golf Club in Hampshire. During his spell at Ampfield Peter played in a number of large European tour events including the Martini International at Wentworth, the Benson and Hedges International and the Coca-Cola World Young Professional Championship, before taking up his current role at Rowlands castle in 1980.

Although now in his 37th year at the club Peter has no intention of taking things easy, as he and Jimmy plan to continue to expand the business, with the shop in particular being extremely successful in the past few years. They have built a reputation for selling the very latest golf equipment from the biggest manufacturers including Callaway, Titleist, Taylormade and Cobra, all at the most competitive prices in the area. Lady golfers are particularly well catered for, with the shop having its own designated area for Ladies clothing and fashions, and not to mention their now famous end of season sales. In total the hotel received over 200 entries from as far afield as Yeovil, Somerset, with 60 players eventually qualifying for a free place in the Grand Final held at Meon Valley on Thursday 29th September 2016. Despite a cold and wet start to the day the sun did eventually come out, some good golf was had and without exception I believe everyone enjoyed the day. The eventual winner Mr David Payne of Meon Valley GC had one of the best rounds he has had for a long time. Playing off a handicap of 16 he ended up finishing with an impressive 41 pts, four points clear of his nearest challenger. David was presented with the Winner’s Trophy by ex-Director of Golf, George McMenemy, thanked everyone for their support and in particular Course Manager Phil Walker and his team for presenting the course in such excellent condition. Our intention is to now build on its initial success and turn it into one of the most prestigious Senior Men’s Open Championships of the year, however, as we all know the success and quality of any event depends totally on the support it receives.

BOOM! Outsider stuns long drivers

OUTSIDER Ilija Djurdjevic stunned the field to win the Portuguese LDET Championship, the ninth stop of the Long Drivers European Tour, held at Quinta do Peru Golf & Country Club. The 26-year-old Serb beat off the challenge of top-ranked Maurice Allen in the final - the second successive occasion in which the American has fallen at the last hurdle. But Allen retained his number one ranking as the tour headed off to New Zealand for its final this month Remuera Golf Club, Auckland. Allen struck the biggest drive of the day - all of which were played into strong headwinds - at 349 yards, but couldn't better Djurdjevic in either of the two sets in the final, falling to drives of 328 and 330 yards.

Last year Wessex Golf Centre’s Watson booked a spot in the PGA Cup team by finishing fourth in the PGA Championship held there last season. He also won the proam the previous year.

THE pairing of Amanda Mayne and Jo Shorrocks successfully did the double when they defended their title at the Brenda King Foursomes at Clevedon Golf Club in Somerset.

Bickerton, the former European Tour winner who retired to the West and is now a professional at Minehead and West Somerset, plays occasionally but achieved his only previous West win at Burnham last year.

Amanda, from Saltford in Somerset, and Jo, from Bigbury in Devon, finished the 36-hole scratch medal foursomes on seven over par and won by four shots. The competition is contested by pairs from all over the country and is the annual finale to the English senior women’s season. The South West was well represented with Devon pair Anne Norman (Exeter) and Lesley Pascoe (Stover) taking second place.

Watson, enjoying only a modest season by his high standards with wins only in the Dudsbury Masters pro-am and Devon PGA event at Tavistock, opened and closed with bogeys but six birdies enabled him to post three-under-par 68. Bickerton, whose European Tour career was cruelly cut short through injury, made an outstanding start. He was out in four-under 32 after collecting three successive birdies from the second. But the return was tougher and he also bogeyed the last. Adam Frayne (Yelverton) returned the only blemish-free round of the day. Birdies at the third and fourth, plus 16 pars for 69, earned a share of third with Greg Davies (Basset Down).

‘It was lovely to defend,’ said Mayne, who was reserve for the week’s Senior Home Internationals and finished sixth in the recent British senior championship, where Shorrocks also made the cut. They made a slow start to the Brenda King and were six over par after eight holes of the first round. But then, as the weather declined, they hit form, coming home in one-under par. ENGLAND’S Georgia Hall and Sophie Walker finished joint third as Azahara Munoz won the Andalucia Costa del Sol Open de Espana Femenino by a stroke.

RORY McIlroy won a play-off to seal victory in the Tour Championship and take the $10m (£7.7m) FedEx Cup prize.

The event was decided on the final hole when United States' Beth Allen only managed a bogey as her Spanish rival scored par for a 10-under total.

The Northern Irishman, 27, rolled in a birdie from 15 feet to edge out Ryan Moore on the fourth play-off hole to win the $1.5m (£1.15m) tournament.

English disabled golfers triumph against Scots - ENGLAND 15.5 / SCOTLAND 8.5 This year's 'Auld Enemies Cup', the first in a series of pan-disabled Ryder Cup style match in the World, between the disabled golfers of England and Scotland took place at the prestigious MacDonald Cardrona in Peebles, Scotland on 12-14th September 2016. After 3 days England won the trophy back and now the series stands at 3-2 to England in terms of matches played – strangely it’s always been the Away side who have won so far – England won at Slaley Hall 2011, Scotland at Breadsall Priory 2012, England at Kinross 2013, Scotland at The Shire London in 2014, and now England at Cardona in 2016. Which all prompted officials at the historic club to pose the question: Is this the oldest fourball in the country? Director of golf Stuart Collier said: “What a brilliant feat by John. I don’t reckon there can be many people who’ve had their entire collection of holes-in-one since they turned 80. And, when you look at the guys in that group, with a combined age of 358, you have to ask is there a more vintage regular fourball in the country ? All four golfers are part of our special 80+ membership category, which was created by Stoke Park to allow senior members to continue playing golf and enjoying all the aspects of membership at a reduced rate with access to nine holes of golf per day. It’s been a great success and the elder members have embraced it, not just for the golf and fitness aspects, but also the increased social interaction.” Bush’s achievement is remarkable – but he’s not the oldest golfer to record a hole-in-one. That record is believed to be held by 103year-old Gus Andreone, who in 2014, as the oldest member of the Professional Golfers Association, aced the 113-yard, 14th hole of the Lakes Course at Palm Aire in Sarasota, Florida. Collier smiled: “That means John only has to wait another eight years or so to be the oldest in Europe. And, to be fair, I wouldn’t put it past any of the guys in that group to do that!” It is one of just two five-AA Red Star golf clubs in England and the historic land on which it stands is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. The historic course played host to the PGA Matchplay in 1910 and, even more famously, the golf match between Sean Connery’s James Bond and Auric Goldfinger, in the 1964 film, Goldfinger. It also has a thriving golf club with around 800 active members.

TWO COURSE RECORDS IN HAMPSHIRE LADIES’ DIV 1 AUTUMN MEETING

DISABILITY GOLF COACHING IN THE SOUTH WEST

Div1 Autumn Meeting

85 ladies from 33 clubs arrived at Rowlands Castle for this year’s Division 1 Autumn Meeting. As in previous years there were plenty of nett and gross prizes on offer for three divisions, plus trophies for the meeting’s best scratch and nett scores.

Boringdon Park Golf Club is setting the standards with disability golf coaching in the South West with the introduction of one of the UK’s first “inclusive clubs”. The inclusive club is a partnership between Boringdon Park, Special Olympics Plymouth Division, YMCA, Active Devon and Devon County Golf Partnership and will actively be promoting disability golf in the local community.

In addition, competitors also play for trophies for the best aggregate nett and scratch scores after adding the scores from the Championship rounds played at Basingstoke Golf Club in May. At the beginning of the field, ladies had to contend with some fairly heavy rain for most of the front nine. Weather conditions improved though and the remainder of the rounds were completed in the sunshine. Despite the improving weather conditions and a golf course prepared to an excellent standard by greens staff at Rowlands, the scoring was tough and the CSS rose to 78. There were however two ladies who managed to achieve new course records, both carding gross 74s they were of course Kerry Smith and Georgie Mundy. After 18 holes there wasn’t a lot between Kerry and Georgie and it turned out that there hadn’t been much between them at Basingstoke either. With both ladies having an aggregate gross score of 152, we had to rely on count back to determine a winner, which this time by a small margin was Kerry. In the aggregate nett competition, Diane Oram from Basingstoke had the leading

score in the clubhouse of nett 151 until the final groups came in. Tammy Andrews in the penultimate group, who had score a nett 70 in the Spring, seemed disappointed with her round at Rowlands but just managed to do enough to get to the winning figure of nett 150. In division two Autumn Meeting which took place at Blacknest Golf Club, Dorinda Tanner from Weybrook Park GC walked away with the trophies for best Nett & Gross aggregate score (an amalgamated score from Champs week at Basingstoke and Autumn Meeting) as well as the Nett trophy for Div 2 Autumn Meeting. Director of Golf & Advanced PGA Professional Steve Dougan initially started coaching Special Olympics Plymouth Division over 3 years ago and since the first session on the range the programme has developed into regular on course activities as well as competitive golf for several different groups and organisations. Boringdon Park was proud to recently hold its 2nd annual disability golf competition,

which was played on their 9 hole Estuary Course. Although some great golf was played and all the players had lots of fun on the course the inclusive Club also improves the participants social skills, self-esteem and confidence and all the players spent an hour socialising in the golf bar after the round. As well as competitions at Boringdon Park some of the golfers have progressed to playing in the National Games in Bromgrove and in the last event 3 of the golfers manged to win Gold, Silver & Bronze in the Par 3/Skills Challenge Competition, which was a great result. Wellow Golf Club could not have asked for more from its members this year. The 2016 summer couldn’t come quick enough and after a wet and miserable winter, Wellow Golf Course, managed by Simon Justice, recovered well and he and his team now boast one of the best kept courses in the area with greens to match any top rated course. In May, 25years after the doors opened at Wellow, celebrations began to recognise how far Wellow has come in its 25 years, but no one had thought that over the next few months success would stem from these celebrations. First it was the turn of the Men. Having competed in the Monty League for many years, in September , Wellow produced some fantastic results under Captain Kevin Foot, to clinch an emphatic first ever title, beating favourites and eventual runners-up Bramshaw Golf Club on the last day. This meant that the team was invited to Romsey Golf Club for the Swann Trophy and Monty League presentation. This again was new territory for Wellow, but they produced some great golf on cue to become earn the runners-up spot behind hosts Romsey. Then it was time for Ian Weeks and his Gales Hockley team to produce a string of victories to reach another prestigious Final. Having won a convincing away tie at Stoneham 8-1 and the Army Golf Club 6-3, the next stop would be Hockley Golf Club. After a gruelling match against current holders Meon Valley, Wellow came up just short and were 2016 Runnersup.Once again showing pride and team spirit throughout the competition. Then it was time for the juniors. 2016 has been an exciting year already with membership increasing in the section, a growing comradery and an addition to the coaching staff in local PGA Professional Danny Harris.

Against all odds and after some incredible comebacks in previous rounds a semifinal was booked.

It makes sense to install permanent works, obtaining the best possible results at a minimum of costs. The Royal British Legion Poppy Golf Matchplay Tournament started with over 150 teams from all corners of the country and its final 4 teams would battle it out over 2 days at Staverton Golf Club, Northamptonshire. After narrowly winning the semi-final 1up, Wellow had now reached the final that alluded them 2 years earlier. After a valiant effort, the Wellow team came up just short becoming runners-up to a very strong Rotherham team consisting of 2 England players. A feat not to be shrugged at.

My thanks go out to the parents who supported us and fully entered into everything the weekend had to offer. ‘Major public sector works will not proceed unless they prove by CBA (Cost Benefit Analysis) a considerable return on investment over their design life. I think more clubs can do this: a rigorous financial analysis of the benefits of proposed course works is well worth the effort. A lot of waste could be prevented. EcoBunker clients Southerndown, Pennard and Secession GC did the maths and are now really benefitting. Andrew Mannion (Southerndown) and Huw Morgan (Pennard) figured that every ‘traditionally’ built bunker on their courses was costing them £350 to £400 per year to maintain. After renovating using the EcoBunker construction method, feedback is now showing a payback period of 4 years, leaving 16 years or more with virtually no bunker maintenance burden. The return on investment in both cases is conservatively estimated at 400%. At Secession GC, traditional bunker construction methods simply could not

How to spend £250 and gain another 30 yards on your slice!

The summer has passed in a whirl of events with beautiful sunshine and guests being treated to great golf and hospitality. July saw the Ladies Open day and August witnessed the Members and Guests day. Both were very well attended and enjoyed by all. On the 8th July the Ladies exchanged their golf hats, styled up and headed for another sporting event at the Chepstow Races Ladies day.

Someone recently commented on the battered and ‘old hat’ driver I was playing with! I’d never really given it much thought, as my ‘old faithful’ usually managed to steer my ball in the direction of the fairway but the comment certainly got me thinking.

My next puzzling problem was not being able to achieve much height on the ball and it took me a few rounds to appreciate my new beast needed an upgrade to a higher tee. So, it’s bright orange tees in future, despite having just bought a large bag of pink ones.

So, I decided the time had come to explore if technology really had moved on and whether I could find a new little gem that would give me a few extra yards.

To add to my experience, during a recent game the driver head started to rattle, putting a whole new meaning on ‘shake, rattle and roll’. It turns out the head degree adjuster technology (basically a screw) kept coming loose. As a result, every time I drove, it needed a quick DIY fix with a divot repairer to avoid having to root around in the bushes for my driver head as well as my ball!

Be aware of what you wish for is all I can say, as I may be shooting another 30 yards but unfortunately my ball keeps veering off to the right which is very unsettling when you’re looking down a tight fairway with thick gorse bushes either side. It’s not as if the club head isn’t big enough. The surface area must be at least 30% bigger than my old driver, so you’d think it would be more forgiving and I’d have even more chance of hitting the sweet spot. So why did I buy it? Well, it worked wonderfully when I was testing it but by the time I’d stepped on the golf course, it had developed a 30 degree tick and required a tweak in my swing to adjust for not being ‘off-set’ like my old driver.

It’s all very well having the latest technology but it won’t fix a dodgy swing. So when I slip back into my habit of flapping my elbows like a chicken, doing ‘loop the loop’ with the club head or putting a twist in my wrists then I know the end result will be an even more wayward ball. Strawberries and cream accompanied by a glass or two of Pimms were the order of the day. The ladies mingled with their four legged friends or foe depending on the race results. There were winners and losers returning home with joyful stories of a lovely summer’s evening spent at the races. The 25th September brought the 3 Day Away Trip. This year toTenby’s quiet countryside for a stay at Trefloyne Manor with its lovely golf course. The first challenge was a team event but the weather was not kind and it was completed in chilly winds and rain. The winning team were Chris Evans, Jennifer Thomas and Helen Evans. It was closely contested and following them into second place were Helen Poole, Angela Padfield and Lorraine Pointon-Bell.

Day 2 the bad weather closed in and the rain rendered the course unplayable. Spirits undaunted the ladies headed out to visit Tenby and Narberth. Scenery was viewed through a mist but coffee and cakes did the trick and replenished flagging spirits. Evening meals at the orangery restaurant in Trefloyne were always something to look forward to and the Hotel staff did all in their power to make this an enjoyable stay. Day 3 the drizzling rain continued but golf had to be played and The Lady Cottrella Trophy had to be won. For the second year running the Trophy was awarded to the Lady Captain herself, Sian Lovell. In second place was Helen Evans and third was Tina Morgan. Nearest the pin was also won by Tina Morgan and the longest drive went to Helen Poole. This year a nine hole competition was contested and the result was first Margaret Rees, second Regina Drew and third Eluned Rees. 29th September saw Ryder Cup fever hit Cottrell Park. The ladies divided into European and USA teams in a 4 ball better ball competition. Although rigorously fought on this occasion it was won by the USA teams. Finally the coffee morning on the first Monday of every month for past and present members continues to be well attended and enjoyed.

Distance or Line!! When it comes to putting, which is most important, distance or line?

Which parts of your game REALLY cost you shots? Coming into Winter now many players will seek ways to improve their swings. Shelling balls on the driving range may well improve ball striking and accuracy come the Spring, but it is it really where the mistakes are being made on the course? Those who are really serious about reaching their potential as golfers will look at course management, health management, game management and self management. For many the short game is at fault yet this is not the area practiced nearly enough. It is not that they cannot chip, simply using completely the wrong club. Lack of success breeds lack of confidence and an inability to commit to the shot when it comes to the crunch, especially under pressure. To see huge gains next season prepare and plan your Winter of improvement. Get to the very inner issues in your games. If the weather allows it a playing lesson, even at this time of the year will diagnose where problems lie. Walking and talking your way round the course and previous rounds will unearth actual issues. The ability to hit balls from awkward lies (Some play on a hilly course yet have never been taught how to set up on the different slopes) or out of trouble can be greatly improved when offered the chance to hit multiple shots, you'll gain confidence that it will work next time you're faced with the same shot in competitive play If you have holes you literally dread it's worth playing them with a few balls and your trusty coach by your side. Confidence is key.

If the weather is shocking then a clubhouse lesson will be one of the most useful things you've ever invested in. In my lessons I get to the bottom of your weaknesses simply during this initial session - all other lessons stem from here. A purposeful plan is put in place and away we go, on the path to improvement. The questions asked with a large coffee in hand (essential obviously) will reveal how we are to save you shots. So often the mind is at fault (a lacking in self belief, poor decision making on the course or failing to maintain focus). Your weaknesses within your game are quickly highlighted and lessons on any areas that cause problems can be scheduled in. The most important thing is that you aren't wasting time and money on grooving a perfect swing. Trust me fundamentals need to be correct, from a golf fitness point of view physical limitations need to be addressed too if you are to even get close to consistently getting back to the ball. Just don't strive for pretty, just practical. Use what you have initially to gain confidence then look ahead to fine tune this into somewhere you believe your game can get to. So make a plan to really invest in your game and make that plan with your pro. Of course, to hole a putt - unless it’s dead straight - you have to have both. Out of the two I would say control of distance is more important. As a rule, a putt with poor judge of distance usually ends up further away from the hole than a putt that is misread. Also, the line of a putt is so dependent on the pace of the ball. This is something you always want to consider when you are hitting a breaking putt. The line on a firmly hit putt may be inside the lip. The line on the same putt hit to die in the hole may be a couple of inches outside the lip. Next time you watch a great putter, like Jordan Spieth, notice how his putts consistently die a fraction past the hole. Always having great pace makes it easier for him to get the lines right. So how do you get good at hitting the right pace? There are quite a few aspects that have to be considered, two of them being the launch of the ball and the spin that’s put on it. In many cases these two aspects can be improved with a correctly fitted putter. Hitting the sweet spot is also important. However, the very important aspect I’m going to cover in this article is the tempo of the stroke. Countless times I’ve heard golfers say after they’ve left a putt short, “I didn’t hit it hard enough”. Often that same golfer will get on the next hole and send the putt charging past. You can bet your bottom dollar that this golfer varies the amount of power he uses on putts to hit different lengths. The worst distance putters vary the strength that they hit the putt. The best vary the length of the stroke. So what do I mean by that statement because, obviously, to hit a putt further you have to hit it harder! A six foot downhill putt has to be hit much softer than one which is twenty foot and uphill.

The key is to vary the length of the stroke according to the distance the putt has to be hit. You vary the length of the stroke but you don’t vary its tempo. In other words, it doesn’t matter whether the putt is from six foot or forty feet, the stroke should always take the same amount of time. If every stroke takes the same amount of time and varies in length, the putter will naturally be moving faster or slower at impact accordingly. So if you do struggle a little with controlling the distance of your putts, here’s a great way to improve things. First thing is to get the idea of a tempo in your head. You might find saying “one thousand and one” helps. “One thousand” is the backswing, “and” is the transition and “one” is the forward swing. The forward swing and the word “one” finish at the same time. Imagine a pendulum swinging. Now for the stroke itself - make the follow through and the backswing about the same length. Ideally make the follow through a fraction longer. Check out the picture (above); the black dot is where the ball would be. Now make the stroke in time with your natural “one thousand and one”- most people have a slightly different rhythm. Now try it on a ten foot putt. Keep the tempo the same as you practiced before, saying quietly “one thousand and one”. If the putt comes up short make the swing a little longer. If it goes long, swing a little shorter. Practice all sorts of lengths, uphill, downhill and side hill! Before long you will be able to link the length of the swing to the distance and it will become almost automatic. Taking the same amount of time over each putt is also a key for maintaining your putting rhythm. Martin Butcher
