Tiger out until 2016 after new back op

OCTOBER 2015

The Solheim Cup 2015

Tears as fired-up U.S. regain cup

He does not expect to play again until early 2016 following a second operation on his back within 18 months. Controversy over a concession that wasn’t: The scene at the 17th

Surgeons removed a small disc fragment which was pinching a nerve. Woods, the 39year-old winner of 14 Majors, said in a statement on his website: ‘This is certainly disappointing, but I'm a fighter. I've been told I can make a full recovery, and I have no doubt I will.’

THE Americans, with so many women in the world’s top ranks, were always going to offer a huge push in the Solheim Cup last-day singles, but an earlier controversy certainly fired them up – and left many in anger and tears.

Woods missed the cut at three of the four Majors this year, although he tied for 10th in his most recent tournament, the Wyndham Championship.

Juli Inkster's American team trailed 10-6 after the morning fourballs, but won eightand-a-half points from 12 singles to regain the title they last won in 2009.

Now ranked 283 in the world, Woods has not won a Major since the 2008 U.S. Open and has struggled with form and injury in recent years. He missed three months of last season after surgery was performed on a pinched nerve in his back in March 2014. The statement added that Woods had felt some occasional discomfort in the back and hip area over several weeks.

‘I appreciate the fans' concern and support,’ he said. ‘This is unfortunate, but these things happen. I've been injured before and played again. It won't be any different this time.’

Earlier, players were in tears after controversy on the 17th green helped holders Europe take a 10-6 lead. Europe's Charley Hull and fourball partner Suzann Pettersen beat Alison Lee and Brittany Lincicome after Lee picked up her ball. Lee, 20, thought an 18-inch putt had been conceded as Hull had walked away. But Pettersen said they had not conceded and the hole went to Europe who won two up on the final hole. Both Hull and Lee, playing in her first Solheim Cup, had to be consoled by team

officials amid claims Europe had broken the game's moral code. Four-time major winner Laura Davies blamed Norwegian Pettersen, 34, and said Hull, 19, was not at fault. Davies said: ‘I am disgusted. Suzann has let herself and her team down.’ Inkster said Europe's action showed disrespect. Koch said it was Lee's mistake: ‘Our team didn't concede the putt. She picked it up. It broke the rules’ That left Europe needing just four more points to win – but then came the American stampede.

‘They were all fired up (by the incident)’, Inkster said. Annika Sorenstam, assistant to Koch, said: ‘We will get fired up for 2017.’

Daly in health scare JOHN Daly was taken to hospital after collapsing during a tournament in America. The 49-year-old two-time Major winner was diagnosed with a collapsed lung. Colourful Daly, who is reputed to have lost millions of dollars gambling and once went on a diet of whisky and popcorn, returned to play less than 24 hours later. Daly said: ‘I was having a great time and then suddenly - boom - I'm falling

down while on the 18th tee. The next thing I know I'm in an ambulance. It was scary. They thought I had a heart attack. But I only smoke two packs of cigarettes a day, not three, so I’ll be alright.’ He later tweeted: ‘Still very sore and dealing with the issues from my rib injury in 2007 that has caused me a lot of pain.’ Daly won the US PGA Championship in 1991 and The Open in 1995.

John Daly: ‘I only smoke two packs of cigarettes a day, not three, so I’ll be alright.’

CARRY ON TV GOLF VIEWING Sport joins free-to-air TV code

The ankle injury which kept him out of the Scottish Open, The Open and the Bridgestone Invitational meant he would not meet the 13-event qualification for the Race to Dubai.

GOLF has joined other major British sports in pledging to continue making major events available on free-to-air television.

With the Northern Irishman swapping back and forth at the top of the world rankings with America’s Jordan Spieth, tour officials have used their discretion to ensure the 26-year-old can compete in the season finale.

It means free-to-air broadcasters such as the BBC will, at the very least, be given access to highlight packages, and the sports are also committed to ploughing up to 30 per cent of their broadcast deals back into their grassroots projects.

The code identifies ‘investment in grassroots sport’ as youth programmes, community facilities and coach and volunteer training.

McIlroy has committed to play a further three events to take his total to 12.

The code of conduct was established by the Sport and Recreation Alliance, an umbrella organisation of more than 300 bodies, and it is overseen by the Sports Broadcast Monitoring Committee, chaired by former Channel 4 executive Sir David Scott.

The fact that 10 leading sports bodies have pledged to provide free-to-air broadcasters with live, recorded or highlight content will be welcomed by most fans, particularly as the live rights for the most popular sport on TV continues to rise and rise.

Sir David said: ‘The code makes the best sporting events available to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. It also makes clear the link between the success of these blue-riband events and a healthy participation base.

D e bate

European Tour chief executive Keith Pelley said he had taken the decision very seriously: ‘I have spent the last two weeks examining every possible solution, and I have spoken with Rory and his team, as well as independent medical advisers and some prominent players.

‘I am convinced that he could not commit to any further tournament participation without risking further injury and persistent weakness to the ankle in the future.’

The national governing bodies of our most popular sports, including cricket, football, golf, tennis and rugby union and league have re-signed a voluntary code first set up in 2009.

‘In the last available financial year, sports bodies that are full signatories reinvested at least £135m in grassroots sport.’

Triumph for England boys A STRONG finish gave England a twopoint victory in the annual U16 boys’ international against Wales at Radyr G.C. They won the final singles session 4½-3½ to seal an 11-9 win against a tough Welsh side. Team manager Nick Over said: ‘It is worthy of note that 15 of the 20 matches went to the 17th or 18th hole which reflected the closeness of the match.’ The result was in doubt until the last two matches finished on the 18th, where Taylor

Stote won his point with a par and Harvey Byers – who was unbeaten during the three sessions – also parred the hole to halve his game. The England team: Harvey Byers (Walton Heath), Angus Flanagan (St George’s Hill), Harry Goddard (Hanbury Manor), Luke Kelly (Ashtonunder-Lyne), Thomas Plumb (Sherborne), George Saunders (Meon Valley), Taylor Stote (Burnham & Berrow), and James Wilson (Tyneside).

Apart from the Royal & Ancient, Golf’s European Tour is among the signatories.

The live rights to England cricket going to pay TV in 2012, recent deals have seen the BBC lose live coverage of golf's Open Championship to Sky, BT take the Champions League from ITV and Sky, and Eurosport secure exclusive pan-European rights to the Olympics. Live rights to Six Nations rugby were also expected to go to pay TV but a joint BBC/ITV deal was announced in July to keep rugby union internationals on free television. Renewal of the voluntary code of conduct will not end debate about the relationship between broadcast deals and mass participation in sport. There will continue to be debate about regulation, with many experts and politicians calling for closer scrutiny of how public money is used to promote sport for all.

Walker is a stroll for Britain and Ireland GREAT Britain and Ireland had half a dozen match results in hand as they strolled to victory against the USA to regain amateur the Walker Cup. The home side's 16 and a half total against nine and a half at Royal Lytham & St Anne's was their best ever points tally, and victory was assured with six matches to go. With a 10-6 cushion after the morning foursomes, they needed only three and a half points from 10 singles matches, with Ashley Chesters, Cormac Sharvin and Jimmy Mullen and a half from Paul Dunne securing victory. The runaway win was only GB&I's ninth Walker Cup win, but their fifth in the last six contests at home. Chesters beat Jordan Niebrugge 3&1 for the first points of the afternoon, giving the Englishman three and a half points from a possible four. This means Niebrugge had lost all three of his matches, just two months after finishing sixth in The Open at St Andrews. Sharvin then beat 52-year-old Mike McCoy 4&3 before Mullen beat Denny McCarthy to become the first GB&I player to have a perfect 4-0 record since Paul Casey and Luke Donald at Nairn in 1999. Dunne bagged the half-point needed for victory after world number two Maverick McNealy missed a five-foot birdie putt on the 18th. GB&I captain Nigel Edwards, who led his side to victory for the second time in three attempts, said: ‘At Royal Aberdeen [in 2011] we were up against it until the death but the boys at the top of the order went out fast as we needed them to do.’ Dunne, who led The Open after 54 holes before fading on the final day, added: ‘I will take winning over 30th place every day. It's so much better to do it as a team. Nigel has been a fantastic captain and inspired us from start to finish.’

OCTOBER 2015

Fastest Way To Lower Your Handicap Right Now Believe me, you do not want to be the average golfer. Golf is an amazing game, and at times, amazingly difficult. I’ve been making golf clubs for over fifteen years, playing for closer to forty, and in all that time I have never met a golfer, from the twice a year hacker to Top Ten in the World Major winners, who did not wish they were better. But instead of lowering their scores, most recreational golfers do the opposite, and shoot themselves in the foot before they even step to the first tee. I’m talking about the most pervasive mistake in amateur golf, and one that can be fixed immediately, with no lessons or practice. It really is low hanging fruit. If your goal is to play better, here’s the quickest fix out there: get custom made golf clubs that fit you and match each other, it's a no-brainer. The sad fact is that most golfers put more effort into fitting their shirts, shoes and gloves than their actual playing equipment. You would play football in boots three sizes too small nor would you go ten pin bowling with a ball you couldn’t fit your fingers in but the problem with golf clubs is that they don’t give you this kind of obvious feedback. If you are tall and play stock clubs you simply bend down further and wonder why your back hurts. If you slice all the time your mind and body try to compensate for a problem that may well be equipment related – and since the golf swing is largely counter-intuitive, this “compensation” usually makes the problem worse. Poorly made equipment is often the start of a downward spiral that can derail your swing. or your putting. It sounds simple, but the bottom line is very few people do it. Here’s the problem in a nutshell: All golf clubs have five key variables, lie angle, loft, shaft length, shaft flex, and grip size. When you buy off the rack golf clubs – which the vast majority of golfers do – they typically come set up as follows: average-average-averageaverage-average. The chances that you are so perfectly average in every way is minuscule. It’s akin to taking the national averages for waist size, inner leg, shoe size, collar, chest, and sleeve length buying a full suit and outfit and expecting it to fit everyone. It doesn’t.

I’ve written on custom club fitting golf more than 15 years and talked about it with many people in the golf industry and everyone agrees that the vast majority of all golfers play with equipment that doesn't fit them, the most popular estimate of those that do is less than ten percent. One seasoned club fitter told me that 97% of the golfing public routinely plays with clubs that don’t fit. When you are trying to hit the ball on a sweet spot that is minuscule to begin with, playing shafts that are a half-inch too long or short will make this nearly impossible. If you hit the ball too high, too low, or slice or hook too much, there’s a good chance your clubs are partly to blame – maybe largely to blame. Bottom line: if you own clubs, they should be custom made and fitted, pure and simple.

Even when they are sponsored and need to play one brand, there is a long history of them decorating clubs from other manufacturers they prefer to look like the ones they are paid to play.

But most golfers pay even less attention to the putter than their other clubs. Just like irons, putters have loft and other variables and can quickly be fit your stroke. It really is win-win.

Bear in mind the normal professional stipulates that the pro has to have a minimum of 10 clubs out of the 14 manufactured by the sponsor.

A copy of this and my previous articles for Doyle’s Dilemmas can be found online at http://www.teetimesgolfmagazine.com

Besides the fact that most stock clubs won’t work for you and you need to get professionally fitted, there are a couple of other factors at play which most recreational golfers overlook.

Should you have any questions on this or any equipment matter please feel free to call me on 01256 322007 or 07859 920055.

How many people do you know that have had a putter fitting? This is far less common than simple custom club fitting, which is uncommon to begin with, yet you hit more shots with your putter than any other club, and it accounts for roughly a third of all strokes.

Alternatively, email me directly at dave@madetomeasuregolf.co.uk or visit my web site at www.madetomeasuregolf.co.uk.

The irony is that made to measure clubs do not cost as much as many people think. For the same price you pay for the set when you walk into the store, you could have one made for you that fits. I think anyone would wait a week or two to receive clubs that might take 3-7 strokes off their game overnight. Unfortunately, the golf media has long been focused on club reviews rather than club fitting, but the simple fact is that all the major manufacturers make good equipment. The trouble is that each club is top quality but sadly it doesn't match the other clubs in the “set” so how can a review give you the true picture. The fitting process is far more important than the brand you play, which is likely a function of either price or marketing hype. Many golfers buy clubs because their pro idol plays the brand, as if there were similarities in the skill levels and swings. But it is not a level playing field, the reality is that most Tour players have a mixed bag: wedges from one manufacturer, a driver from another, a different hybrid, a putter form another. The only constant is that none of them are off the shelf, they are all custom fitted and custom made.

OCTOBER 2015

BLENHEIM PALACE - FESTIVAL OF TRANSPORT The passion for vintage and classic motor cars is as widespread as the addiction to the game of golf. Visit any event where they are on Michael Rees display or featured and you will see more golf umbrellas than you can count. It was certainly not difficult to spot them at the Festival of Transport held at Blenheim Palace at the end of August. The Bank Holiday Weather Phantom was in full cry, as sadly the rain continued to pour down during the two days of this wonderful event. Inevitably the weather impacted drastically on the entries into the arena, but there was a wide variety of both classic and vintage cars to be seen, and sadly the quality of the photographs was also reduced, but hopefully they still convey the quality of those vehicles which did make the journey. Enthusiasts from all over the country made the journey to Oxfordshire for the event, and several cars were in evidence from Germany and France, here to challenge the home owners for the trophies for each of the categories vied for in the competition ring. We based our stay at nearby Heythrop Park, hoping to add a round of golf to our days at the show, but our enthusiasm was dampened when we were thoroughly soaked on the first day, and the rain simply refused to go away. As we trudged around the show ground looking at the exhibits, we were not disappointed, there was a great show of cars stretching from the 1930’s to the modern era. As we sat mulling over the day, supping the proverbial cup that cheers, we each had our personal favourites, but there was unanimity when we talked about the most impressive entry. The convertible four door Bentley was the star of the show; the 1934 car has been wonderfully restored and stood out among the vehicles paraded in the ring. The choice was closely followed by a very fine example of the Triumph Razoredge saloon.

Austin 7's

BMW

The TVR’s from the specialist sports car company which is hopeful of bringing a new range of cars to the market in 2017, were an impressive line, with cars from the very earliest to the last ones built. Without doubt the sports cars are a big attraction, and the Austin Healey 3000 was the epitome of my dream car, reviving memories of sitting in the passenger seat and feeling the wind blow away the cobwebs. Extend the dreams to Frog Eye Sprites and MG Midgets and the once mighty Midlands car industry was very well represented. Add a sample from the iconic Rolls Royce and BMW stables and you have covered the range. The significance of the once mighty Rootes Group was evident, with immaculate entries from the Hillman stable, in particular the Hillman Avenger Tiger, the limited production version. The Rootes Group was started in 1928 by Brothers William and Reginald Rootes, they produced cars which became symbolic of the advancement of car ownership, with Hillman, Humber, Singer, Sunbeam, Talbot, and on the commercial scene they ran Commer and Karrier. Undercapitalisation meant that the company was eventually sold to US giant Chrysler.

Pontiac

No show would be complete without the huge American gas guzzlers, and they were represented by Dodge, a classic Pontiac, a Stingray and Chevrolet and Oldsmobile saloons. Many examples of the latter two can still be seen running around as taxis in Cuba. From the more recent times the impact of Japan and the other Far Eastern countries with the Toyota MR2 club, the great little roasters that never seem to lose their popularity.

though it will be difficult to find a more fitting venue to show their paces. Blenheim Place, a Unesco World Heritage site is the traditional home of the Dukes of Marlborough. It is famous as the birthplace and ancestral home of Sir Winston Churchill. The beautiful building, built in English baroque style and the only non-royal building to be called a palace, was designed in the 18th century by Sir John Vanbrugh, after the estate had been gifted to the First Duke of Marlborough for his victories over the French and the Bavarians in the War of the Spanish Succession. Today it is enjoyed by the public for a variety of purposes, such as the Transport Festival, or sporting events, The International Horse Trials or even for film locations. The ducal family still host functions in the state rooms, and the palace remains as the Spencer-Churchill family home, the present incumbent is the 12th Duke of Marlborough.

All in all an excellent display, which did not fully extend the judges in the arena, a reluctance to bring them in is understandable when owners takes such care and have such pride in their vehicles. They will be there to strut their stuff when the weather is kinder,

If you have never visited Blenheim, it is well worth the journey, particularly if you couple it with an event which has your interest; our two days including the stay at Heythrop Park were thoroughly enjoyed, despite the appalling weather.

The great names were present all around, with the Jaguar XJ club, the Mini Club, each with impressive lines of cars all gleaming despite the drops of rain. From the 1920’s came the Austin 7’s, born from a concept by Sir Herbert Austin, and built at Longbridge they brought the car within reach of a whole new market. The little convertible “Chummy” was a delightful exhibit.

STONEHAM VICTORIOUS IN SCRATCH FINAL

North Hants Trophy finals day is always one of the highlights of the summer. With spectacular golf and excellent hospitality, 2015 was no exception.

Charlie shows us how firmly her back foot is planted in her backswing – it’s almost pushing into the ground.

Hayling, Hockley, Basingstoke and Stoneham golf clubs all made it to this year’s finals day held at Army GC on 8th September. In the morning semis Stoneham played Hockley and Basingstoke played Hayling providing spectators with 6 tantalising singles scratch matches to savour. Both outcomes were impossible to call and the Stoneham/Hockley encounter in particular was as tight as it could be.

From here she can drive her downswing from her lower body, enabling that explosion of upper body power and clubhead release that all great players have. Let me help you to build your swing “from the ground up” - call or text me on 07973 307880.

On the same day Army also hosted the final of the North Hants plate, where this year first time finalists Rowlands Castle faced previous winners Royal Winchester. These three scratch matches were also tremendously close but it was the Royal Winchester team of Jilly Wehbeh, Gemma Duxfield and Moya Abbott that would go on to win the plate for a second time.

SOUTHAMPTON WIN 2015 HULL SHIELD 88 ladies competed in this year’s Hull Shield hosted by Petersfield Golf Club. Sadly torrential rain forced this year’s competition to be reduced to a nine hole event, however Southampton Golf Club, represented by Debbie Emery & Lynne Hayward, didn’t let the rain phase them as they carded an excellent combined medal score of 69.5.

Temple Golf Club, a Willie Park Jnr course steeped in over 100 years of history, changed its membership options in August 2014. Set against its splendid history Temple has a radical new approach that offers today’s golfers refreshing choices based simply on how often they want to play. Our ‘Lifestyle Membership’ model has already attracted over 200 new younger members from the surrounding Thames Valley area by making golf more affordable, flexible and family-friendly. Our new Course Manager, Ben Kebby, aims to place Temple

firmly in the top 100 golf courses in England. Using his experience from Sunningdale and The Berkshire Ben and his team have already taken a big step forwards in course presentation as well as delivering firmer and truer greens. The clubhouse has also been improved with a new patio that makes the most of one of the best views in English golf across Marlow and down the Thames Valley. HERE COME THE GIRLS! Justin so

unlucky this year

New pledges in drive to boost lady players CLUBS, counties and golf media have signed pledges to support England Golf’s drive to get more women and girls playing the game. They committed to action at a recent England Golf Women and Girls’ Conference at Frilford Heath Golf Club in Oxfordshire, which showcased inspiring women, success stories and great initiatives.

A CURIOUS statistic has highlighted the fact that Hampshire’s Justin Rose was unlucky not to have added at least one more Major this year to the U.S. Open he won in 2013.

These girls golf! Conference delegates on the putting green (Image © Leaderboard Photography)

The promises support England Golf’s pledge to continue working closely with national and county partners and to support clubs to increase women and girls’ participation and membership.

The video features women and girls from all over the country and from different walks of life and backgrounds who are enjoying golf for many reasons and fitting it into their everyday lives.

The conference was part of England Golf’s first Golf Week and it followed the launch of the video campaign #ThisGirlGolfs which aims to challenge perceptions and inspire participation.

England Golf’s strategy was highlighted to delegates by Lauren Spray, the Women and Girls Participation Manager, who drew attention to support for clubs to recruit and retain women and girl members.

This includes the production of a series of factsheets and a pilot project, working with 100 clubs in 13 counties, to grow women’s participation and membership. A Women’s Advisory Group has also been created, bringing together key and influential people to help shape future plans. Many inspirational success stories and initiatives were showcased.

Debunking the myths about golf THE conference set about debunking some of the myths surrounding golf: Golf can be fitted into all lifestyles and it doesn’t have to take hours to play. For example, Golf Express, which has been launched in Staffordshire, promotes 9-hole golf and after work roll-ups. Golf isn’t a stuffy game but offers many experiences including traditional, social, recreational and family. Marketing expert Anabel Sexton urged the golf industry to project a positive image of the game and also advocated challenging dress codes, commenting: “Society moves on. Is it still relevant to make young girls wear clothes they wouldn’t be seen dead in anywhere else?”

Golf is a game for all, not a game for men. BBC Breakfast presenter, Naga Munchetty was featured, saying: ‘Girls should get into golf because this is not a man’s sport, this is about being strong, this is about being competitive, this is about being the best you possibly can.’ Golf is great for health and wellbeing. Playing 18-holes will burn at least 900 calories and will take more than 10,000 steps. Golf is an affordable game. More than 400 clubs offer Get Into Golf activities in England, promoting affordable beginners’ activities with equipment provided free of charge.

Naga, the celebrity Mastermind of golf. . . YOU will have seen her face, and possibly had a hint about her choice of sport.

‘I just loved the fact you are competing against yourself. I love that in golf, it’s just me.’

BBC Breakfast’s Naga Munchetty lives for the afternoon, when she can get out on the golf course.

The broadcaster now plays off nine and fits in rounds as often as she can.

‘I’ll be honest’ she says, ‘golf has changed my life.’ ‘It’s helped with my temperament and my focus and, when you work the hours I work in a studio, being outside for four to five hours a day is good for you.’ Naga Munchetty loves her golf – she even chose the Ryder Cup as her specialist subject on Celebrity Mastermind . . . and won.‘I got into it about eight years ago when I started to have lessons,’ she said.

Naga Munchetty as golfer and TV personality: ‘Girls should get into golf because this is not a man’s sport, this is about being strong, this is about being competitive, this is about being the best you possibly can.’

‘My husband James was hacking around a couple of times a year and I refused to play. I used to think golf was an old man’s game, a posh game, and not for me. But I was taught by Anna Radford, who used to be on the Ladies European Tour. Then I started playing.

Her early starts offer the chance to unwind later in the day, and she enjoys ’s the golfing opportunities provided by long summer nights.

‘With the hours I do, if I didn’t play golf, I’d have a real risk of sitting in front of the TV all day,’ she admits. ‘Instead, I meet amazing people from all walks of life and socialise with people I wouldn’t necessarily choose to socialise with. I learn something every day.’

The 35-year-old North Hants Golf Club star finished fourth in the US PGA, having registered the fourth-best aggregate total of the past 30 years. Rose carded 14-under at the Masters, where he was runner-up to Jordan Spieth, and 14under again at the PGA. These figures were alongside his 11-under at The Open where he tied for sixth. Looking back after Whistling Straits and the final Major of the season, Rose said: ‘If someone had said at the start of the Justin Rose: 14 under at two year I would shoot Grand Slams 14-under par at two Grand Slams, I’d have expected to have been standing before you today as a threetime Major champion.’ This was another stat in a year during which so many records were shattered. Spieth, the new wonderkid who has just nudged Rory McIlroy off the top of the world rankings, broke Tiger Woods’ record aggregate of 53 under par set in 2000. At the US PGA the American, already U.S. Open and Masters champion, became the first man to finish 17-under in a Major and not win it.

Brooke top 3 CANADA’S Brooke Henderson won the Portland Classic with a tournamentrecord scoreto become the third player in LPGA history to win a tour event before turning 18. Eight months after turning professional, the 17-year-old finished 21 under overall to surpass Suzann Pettersen's 20 under par set in 2013. She recorded a three-under fourth round of 69 to finish eight shots clear. Lydia Ko and Lexi Thompson are the only other players to win an LPGA Tour title before their 18th birthday.

WIN FOR DARREN WALKELY WHATS HOT OR NOT BIG AT BROKENHURST MANOR in the World of Ladies Golf

ARE YOUR CLUBS FRIEND OR FOE?

Over the years, I’ve fallen out many times with my Driver. It can be a temperamental beast and on a bad day can cause a devastating round of worm burners and slices.

cause such frustration but when you’ve played nicely up 350 yards of fairway in just two strokes, it can be disconcerting to stand over your third putt wondering if you’re actually going to sink it.

It’s usually a complete mystery why it goes wrong and while it can be tempting to try to tweak the stance, grip or backswing, I learnt the hard way, this is definitely best avoided in the middle of a match to avert an irrecoverable golfing breakdown.

I’ve been told it’s just a question of training the brain but in my experience that’s probably the most unpredictable golf tool of all. With so much stimuli and stress on the course, all it takes is a bad night sleep, a painful knee or being wound-up by the group of snails playing in front of you for the brain to be reduced to a complete fog.

Most golfers appreciate when you hit a bad drive you’re immediately at a disadvantage, even if it’s only psychological. However, despite a poor drive, it’s still very feasible to go on and achieve a decent score because it’s usually comes down to the short game. Well, think about it, there may be 18 drives but there’s twice the opportunity to recover on the green as the average golfer two putts which is usually about 50% of par. A lesson I once learnt when I played an elderly lady who pottered up the fairway but was lethal on the greens. Unfortunately, this brings me to my second most temperamental club in my bag - my putter which can also be a Diva. You wouldn’t think such a simple club could

You can just imagine the body’s internal dialogue once the swing begins with the brain attempting to motivate various muscles to rotate, swing and release whilst at the same time maintaining balance and judging the distance. To be honest, when you start to analyse the twists and turns of the golf swing it’s a miracle we actually manage to strike the ball at all but then that’s the other ‘no no’ of golf, over thinking on the course!

Darren Walkely of Hayling Golf Club, one of the rising stars of Hampshire Golf was triumphant in the Hampshire County Championship Final at Brokenhurst Manor Golf Club; he defeated Tom Robson of Rowlands Castle, in a hard fought and enthralling match by 3/2. Darren said after the prize presentation “It’s a great title to win, I’m putting a lot of work in at present time under the watch-full eye of Hayling Golf Club professional Mark Treleaven; Mark has helped me a lot over the past year. I enjoy working with such an experienced player and coach” Darren is a plus three handicap player at his base Hayling Golf Club and he went on to say “with dedicated practice, I am very hopeful of doing well in the English Amateur Championships in the next couple of years”. In 2014 Darren equalled the course record at Hayling recording a fabulous 63; eight under par. A great score made despite very windy conditions! To put the “Cherry on The Cake” Darren added to his list of golfing achievements. He retained the Hayling Club Championship in June this year with scores

of 75 & 70 winning the Gold Medal at Hayling for the second time in a row, quite a feat considering the number of low handicap golfers at the club. For many years Hayling Golf Club have developed a very strong junior section. Recently the club appointed Ex- Ryder Cup player Steven Richardson as Junior Organiser. What a treat for the young golfers at Hayling, listening and learning from Steve every Saturday afternoon. With Steve at the helm the Hayling youngsters will undoubtable enjoy learning and playing our wonderful game. Hopefully many more stars of the future will be nurtured at this great links. Loud cheers for battler Stephen A NUCLEAR power plant inspector diagnosed with terminal cancer achieved a hole-in-one just six weeks after undergoing a major operation. Stephen Martin, 52, from Newark-on-Trent, scored his poignant ace during a men's monthly medal competition at his home club, Southwell, following his third stage of chemotherapy. It came on the 134-yard, parthree seventh and was witnessed by 20 of his golfing chums, inciting applause so rapturous it could be heard at the clubhouse, more than 100 yards away. He said: ‘Following my operation six weeks previously, I decided I would play our club championship anyway, given I was defending champion. It was a windy day and, as I've lost a lot of my power due to my treatments, I chose to hit an eight-iron on the seventh hole.

‘With a draw on the wind and a friendly bounce, the ball never left the flag, disappearing at a gentle roll. Being watched by all my friends, who've all shown me such tremendous support since I was diagnosed, was more special than the actual hole-inone,’ said Stephen. The feat rewarded Martin with membership of the exclusive BOSS Watches H1Club.

Czech mate surprise for Hannah BRITAIN’S Hannah Burke said she was ‘in a state of shock’ after winning her first Ladies European Tour title in the Czech Republic. The 27-year-old from Welwyn Garden City shot a final-round 64 to finish two strokes clear of Denmark's Nicole Broch Larsen in the Tipsport Golf Masters. Becky Morgan of Wales was a shot back, while Melissa Reid and Charley Hull qualified for the Solheim Cup. I'm absolutely lost for words,’ said the victorious Burke. ‘I didn't really focus too much on winning. I had a little goal set each day and went out to achieve them and I've come out on top, so it feels good.’ Burke's previous best finish was second place at last year's Indian Open, but a closing round of seven birdies and no bogeys finally brought her the win.

ECHOES OF MY DAD SEVE AS the son of a famous father, how do you cope with the expectations and the baggage? In world terms, the sons of Churchill and Kennedy may have struggled. But in golfing circles, how do you cope with carrying on the family name of Ballesteros?

Ballesteros junior is cool about the weight of the family name

BBC Sport’s Northern Ireland correspondent John Haughey recently found out from Javier Ballesteros, son of the iconic Seve. And the young man seems to be coping pretty well.

Javier Ballesteros: ‘My dad always told me it was very important to have fun’

FROM the side view, he looks an inch or two shorter than the golfing colossus you fondly recall bestriding the fairways of Royal Dublin and Portmarnock 30 years ago. But when Javier Ballesteros turns around the jet-black hair and facial features instantly tell you that you have located him among the plethora of pros bashing balls at Galgorm Castle's range.

However, Javier insists that turning pro was always part of his plan and that his late father offered him full support in that endeavour before his death in 2011. The 24-year-old's European Tour debut at the Dubai Desert Classic in January was not a particularly auspicious beginning as he exited early after rounds of 83 and 81 but there have been signs in recent Challenge Tour events that Javier has genuine ability.

Dad Seve after his operations

As the young Ballesteros hammers ball after ball over the boundary fence, the mind wanders back to his father Seve driving the 10th at the Belfry and other golden memories.

Academically very bright, Javier studied law for three years at one of Spain's top universities in Madrid and also had a stint at college in the US before he opted to join golf's paid ranks.

The final years of the late five-time Major winner's career were plagued by an inability to hit fairways with the big stick but the 24year-old Javier confesses his driver is ‘the best club in my bag at the moment’.

‘I'm very happy with what I'm doing. I'm having fun. My dad always told me it was very important to have fun and also to work hard with your game.’

It may be a grey, wet Wednesday in Ballymena but young Ballesteros insists he is enjoying a professional golf adventure that began last November.

Javier's junior career did not necessarily mark him out as someone who was guaranteed to enter the paid ranks although he did achieve a notable victory at the Madrid Amateur Open event in 2012.

IT’S DUTY BEFORE GOLF SOUTH Korean golfer and two-time PGA Tour winner Bae Sang-moon will be missing from the tour after losing his attempt to delay military service. All able-bodied South Korean men are obliged to complete two years of military service between the ages of 18 and 35. Bae had hoped to delay his service to continue his golfing career, but the Daegu court said the military had been right to deny the request.

Golf Academy

Classic Seve, in love with the game

He said he would ‘humbly accept’ the ruling, said the Yonhap news agency. Bae, who is based in the US, also apologised to his fans, saying he had been doing the best he could to extend his stay so he could remain in competition.

‘But the court's ruling today reminded me of the fact I should put my duty as a South Korean citizen ahead of my golfing career,’ he said.

The Pedrena man insists that he is happy with how his game is progressing. Like his father before him, Javier's natural inclination on the golf course is to attack and he admits that he is battling to rein in that tendency.

‘I usually make a lot of birdies but this year I am making lots of sevens, triple bogeys, quadruple bogeys.’ ‘It usually happens to me because I go pretty much for every flag but I'm working on that and sometimes just going for the middle of the green and making a par.’ But while his desire for the daring cut at the green or escape from the woods matches his father's philosophy, Javier insists his famous golfing name is not a burden.

‘Not at all. People are always giving me this question. Being [a] Ballesteros can only help me. What my dad did…you never say it's impossible [to achieve] but I cannot compare myself to my dad. ‘When he taught me and we were on the driving range or playing, he always told me to work really hard and have fun. I'm very happy when someone tells me of their happy memories of my father but I try to be myself and I promise you I don't feel any pressure.’

TEE TIMES readers respond to two rows over matters of good taste LAST month, Tee Times asked for readers’ comments on two controversies: the comments of veteran golf commentator Peter Alliss, and the furore over an incident at a Leicestershire golf club. Alliss was accused of ‘old school sexisim’ with his comment as Zach Johnson lined up the putt that won him the 2015 Open. The TV camera panned to Johnson’s wife Kim at that

moment and Alliss said: ‘She is probably thinking – if this goes in, I get a new kitchen.’ And at the Whetstone Golf Club, there was a flurry of arguments and suspensions after a group of lady members became involved in a heated exchange with a visitor who openly began breastfeeding her baby. Here are the views of two Tee Times readers.

When Peter retires, we will miss his comments Dear sirs,

How we reported the controversies

MEN WOULD HAVE SMILED. . . IF it had been a lady winning a competition and Peter had said when the camera panned to her husband, He is probably thinking "if this goes in I get a new shed”, all the men would smile. And they would start discussing the type and style of shed.

Unfortunately this attitude is very prevalent in our society and often by default makes headlines.

As far as breastfeeding is concerned, I greatly admire ladies and their devotion to children. However, respect is not one way. The lady (!!) in question should have, particularly when in the company of women as well as men who could be accused of "peeping", shown respect and decorum.

I would suggest that the golf club in question should seek to address this particular issue by inviting the people concerned to find a solution, even if an alternative is to suggest that breastfeeding mothers have an room made available, although not compulsory.

There is nothing wrong with breastfeeding in public; it is more a question of being sympathetic to other people’s feelings.

All too often, one gets the impression that the attitude "you can't tell me what to do" replaces common sense and respect for others.

The 'moral guardians' would have us turned into PC clones - or should it be clowns?

Wiltshire battle to county title WILTSHIRE played their hearts out to win the English Boys’ County Championship for the first time in a thrilling finale at King’s Lynn Golf Club. They were pushed all the way by Northamptonshire, who were playing in County Finals for the first time, but Wiltshire found the answers when it counted and eventually won 6-3.

“I am so proud of them,’ said manager Ian Welding. ‘I can’t praise the lads enough, they have been absolutely outstanding. ‘I can’t single out one person, it’s a team effort and everyone played their part. This is absolutely fantastic and massive for the county.’ Hampshire beat Durham 6-3 to secure third place in the championship.

When Alliss finally retires, we shall law miss him very much, as we love his television commentary with all his personal comment. There is no other commentator who delights the viewers in the same way and it is always a great delight to know he is on hand! As to the second report, I would say that the Club has taken entirely the wrong attitude. It would have been far better if the mother concerned had had the courtesy to consider other people at the time and made use of the ladies’ locker room which was freely available.

B.Cox

Ignore the moral guardians. We should value Alliss ALLISS is a national treasure and should be valued as such.

WITH reference to your September issue of Tee Times, I would like to say that Peter Alliss’s facetious comment, though not particularly appropriate, was by no an insult.

As for the feeding issue, if I were sexist I would say that it all depends on the ladies’ build, but I am not.

So I will limit myself to saying that there are a number of natural functions of which

Paul has his first senior moment PAUL Broadhurst surprised a number of people – including himself – as he won on his European Senior Tour debut. On a circuit currently led by Colin Montgomerie and Bernhard Langer, Broadhurst won the Scottish Senior Open in a play-off, beating Austrian Gordon Manson on the second extra hole. Former Ryder Cup player Broadhurst qualified for the Seniors when he turned 50 in August. A curling, downhill 25-foot putt earned him a place in the play-off at Archerfield Links in East Lothian, and he then birdied both the first two extra holes to claim the €53,778 (£40,000) first prize.

Paul Broadhurst: ‘I’m a bit surprised’

‘I have to admit I'm a bit surprised,’ said Broadhurst, who had led the tournament by four shots at one stage in his second round. ‘I've got a dreadful play-off record. Absolutely dire. I was two from 12 before today and none from four on the European Tour, so I suppose you could say I was due one.

‘The family are going to be pleased. I said the other day my bank balance had taken a bit of a battering over the last three or four years but this nice cheque should see

me through to Christmas. It's been nine years since I won a tournament as big as this so I'm a bit emotional. ‘I want to dedicate it to Dave Baxter, a real big pal of mine who died earlier this year. He travelled around the world with me so it's a shame he isn't around to see this.’ The European Senior Tour now comprises a schedule of 16 tournaments in 12 countries across the continent.

PETER ALLISS RENAMES FERNDOWN GOLF CLUB’S 9 HOLE COURSE

‘THE ALLISS COURSE’ On Monday 7th September Ferndown Golf Club hosted the launch of the “Peter Alliss Invitational” Charity AmAm sponsored by JM Scully Ltd. Previous in 2014 the Salterns Alliss Merlo Pro Celebrity competition which came to a close after 28 years broke through the million pound barrier with the monies donated to providing powered wheelchairs to local disabled children together with the Club Captain’s chosen charities. On Monday following a bucks fizz breakfast, teams played 18 holes on Ferndown’s Championship ‘Old Course’. Winners of the tournament were the Main Sponsors team JM Scully Ltd which consisted of Martyn Thompson (professional of Parkstone Golf Club), Jacqui Byrne, and Jackie and Derek Mantle who had a team score of 89

Golfers and honoured guests were invited to a gourmet dinner with Peter Alliss himself as well as a presentation from guest speaker Steve Rider. The auction was hosted by Mike Osman with great prizes including a week in a luxury villa. The auction and raffle raised an amazing £43,000 for the Peter Alliss Wheelchair Charity and Ferndown Captain’s chosen charities.

Late afternoon, guests joined Peter Alliss at the currently titled ‘Presidents Course’ renaming it ‘The Alliss Course’ in recognition of the Clubs long association with the Alliss family namely Percy Alliss who was the head Professional from 1939 to 1967 and a member of the Ryder Cup team on 4 occasions. Peter Alliss began his golfing career at Ferndown prior to becoming a Tournament Professional and was a member of the Ryder Cup Team on 8 occasions.

The BBC filmed the whole day which can be viewed in early 2016 in the second part of An Evening with Peter Alliss.

Peter Alliss stated at the opening ceremony that “it was a great honour and a lasting legacy to have the Alliss family named associated with the 9 hole course and tribute to the families long association with Ferndown Golf Club”.

Ferndown Golf Club – The South West’s Premier 27-hole heathland golf course. Rolex rates Ferndown in the world’s top 3% of courses, while Golf World ranks Ferndown at number 61 in the ‘Top 100 Golf Clubs in Britain & Ireland, 2012-13’. Golfers of every standard can experience both the joy and challenge of our 18-hole Old Course and 9hole Alliss Course.

PETERSFIELD BRING THE CUP HOME!

Last weekend saw the Kindred Cup come to a dramatic climax at Lee on the Solent Golf Club, the Semi Finals were contested by Petersfield Golf Club, Bognor Regis Golf Club, Meon Valley Golf Club and Alresford Golf Club.

watched as Henry rushed the putt passed on the 18th to leave a scary putt for par, Team Captain Darryl was thankful for a straight putt which dropped and took the match down the 1st playoff hole where Petersfield won the hole with a par to go into the final.

The Kindred Cup was first played for in 1989 following an idea by Stan and the late Mary Hancock. This Inter-club competition has proved to be extremely popular. Designed to promote and encourage foursomes golf with the prime objective of furthering friendship and camaraderie between Kindred clubs, there is no doubt that the objective has been achieved.

The Final was between Petersfield and Meon Valley and the team were expecting a tough match but Darryl felt a change in the player’s mentality and calmness in the team was circulating.

The Semi Final draw pitted Petersfield vs Bognor and Meon vs Alresford. The morning began with the Petersfield team feeling nervous at the prospect of competing in a semi-final and perhaps a final. Team Captain; Darryl Phipps, who had barely slept the night before was rallying the team, trying to calm the nerves. First pair out Colin Lavender and Ross Lobacz returned with a win from their match and after 3 more matches had finished the score was tied at 2-2 with the last group; team Captain Darryl Phipps and Henry Holland still on the 18th. The 18th green was surrounded by spectators as the players approached for their putts, and they

The matches started well and after 9 holes PGC were just ahead but there was still plenty of golf to be played. So at 1-1 in the clubhouse Steve Stockham and Paul Duncan took their match up the 1st playoff hole but news was already coming that PGC had won the cup in other matches with a final score of 3 and a half to 1 and a half. The team for the day was: Team Captain - Darryl Phipps, Ross Lobacz, Henry Holland, Colin Lavender, Nathan Titheridge, Chris Ashman, Paul Duncan, Steve Stockham, Kip Wellstead, Steve Taylor. With Peter Crombie, David Greetham, Darren Meadows, Ian Lane and Chris Castle, all playing their part in the overall win. www.petersfieldgolfclub.co.uk

HISTORY OF THE GAME

SCOTLAND

– FOR THE RECORD -

Championship Belt & The Claret Jug

St Andrews

The Old Course

It is universally recognised that Scotland was where the game of golf was born. There have been challenges from Holland France, and others about games with a similar objective, Michael Rees kolven and chole or maile for example, even the Romans played a game with a stick and a round object, but there is only one origin of the game as we play it, simply because none of the other similar games played to a hole in the ground. The earliest mention of golf was in 1457, when the playing of golf and football was banned by King James 11 of Scotland, because they interfered with the training of the archers. Scotland can claim to be number one in so many aspects of the game; a simple listing of the facts is very compelling when considering the importance of the history to the game of golf. Scotland can lay claim to: • The Old Course at St Andrews is the most famous course in the world. Referred to as the Home of Golf. • The oldest golf courses in the world are Scottish, eighteen different locations are recorded between 1502 and 1721, eons before clubs or golf societies were formed. The earliest of those sites is in Perth.

The clubhouse at Muirfield

Links in Edinburgh, and predates purpose built club houses as the place to drink after the game. • The first lady golfer, Mary Queen of Scots was recorded as playing in the year 1542 in East Lothian. • Allan Robertson of St Andrews was the first golf professional. An accomplished maker of hickory clubs and feathery golf balls, he was also the first golfer to break 80 around The Old Course. • The first ever piece of golfing literature is “The Goff”, a 358 line poem about a golf match played at Leith Links. The earliest edition was published in 1743.

• The oldest golf societies, commencing with the Royal Burgess Golf Society in 1735, followed by the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers in 1744 and the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews in 1754.

• East Lothian has the highest concentration of links courses anywhere in the world. With twenty such courses between Aberlady and Dunbar.

• It is no surprise that it is home to the oldest golfing pub, Ye Olde Golf Tavern, built in 1456, is adjacent to Bruntsfield

• The first set of rules was drawn up by The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers in 1744.

Golf Academy

Allan Robertson 1850

Inside Muirfield clubhouse

• The first Open Championship was held at Prestwick Golf Club in 1860. It continued to be held there until 1873 where it was played at St Andrews for the first time. The move came about following the need to acquire a new trophy for the championship. Young Tom Morris had won the Belt outright by winning it three times in succession. The new trophy was paid for by three clubs, Prestwick, the Royal & Ancient Club of St Andrews and The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. They were to form a rota to host The Open Championship. It did not migrate south until 1894 when it was played at Royal St Georges’ in Sandwich. Such a list is dramatic, but there are numerous other facts which make Scotland unique for the golfer. There are over five hundred and fifty golf courses in the country, but one hundred and fifty three of them are nine hole courses, Courses kept in tip top condition and nestling in some of the most spectacular locations.

Some of the best things it is said come in small packages. In modern times, a visit to Scotland and to St Andrews in particular, is top of the list for the majority of golfers in the world, the Royal & Ancient clubhouse sitting behind the first tee at The Old Course in St Andrews the most famous and recognisable clubhouse in in the world, even for non-golfers. The Open Championship is played at five Scottish venues, Muirfield, Turnberry, Carnoustie, Royal Troon and at St Andrews every five years, and to win at the Home of Golf is the greatest ambition of the best players of every era. In the modern era, Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, Sir Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods have all raised the Claret Jug at The Old Course. The most revered and possibly the greatest golfer of all time, Bobby Jones in his acceptance speech when he was granted the Freedom of the Burgh of St Andrews said as he stood unaided despite his chronic illness “I could take out of my life, everything except my experiences at St Andrews, and I would still have a rich full life”. Scotland is indeed the Home of Golf.

HOLE-IN-ONE IN THE T SETTLE CUP MVQ CROWN GOLF COMPETITION AT SONNING GOLF CLUB ‘SURFS THE EARTH’ ON GOLFBOARDS John Eighteen made a hole in one at Sonning Golf Club on the 15 August 2015, just over 23 years after his daughter Claire - Marie Eighteen made the same hole when she was 14 yrs old and some 13+ years after his wife Christine who got a hole in one on a temporary green. John has been a member of Sonning Golf Club for over 25 years and is a fitting as my hole in one follows just after the year of Centenary celebrations at the club. His daughter and John will now be proudly listed on the Hole of One Honour Board in the Club House. Not forgetting his wife’s hole in one which she is also proud off. John also received a letter from Barry Dyett MD of HowDidiDo Media to inform him that he will be given automatic entry into the H1Club – exclusively available to club members using HowDidiDo software – and will receive a special edition H1Club watch from BOSS Watches. The H1Club, is an exclusive organisation for golfers who have achieved the ultimate score, a hole-in-one.

PJP CUP AT CAVERSHAM HEATH Matthew Evans and playing partner Javier Dieguez celebrated in style after winning the PJP Cup at Caversham Heath (Saturday, September 12) – thanks to a hole in one from Evans!

All three venues took delivery of their GolfBoards last month, and dozens of golfers have already given the innovation the thumbsup. The brainchild of fitness tycoon Don Wildman and big wave surfing legend Laird Hamilton, the GolfBoard has been proven to dramatically speed up pace of play, with rounds of golf averaging under three hours.

Evans (9hcp) and Dieguez (14hcp) formed a mouth-watering partnership to amass a tremendous 45 points in a better ball competition played off threequarters handicap.

A GolfBoard is essentially a large, four-wheel motorised skateboard. You mount your golf bag on the front, grab the vertical handle, and speed off down the fairway leaning left and right to steer. GolfBoard devotees call it ‘surfing the earth’.

Thirty eight pairs contested the annual PJP Cup (shotgun start) honours board event, sponsored by member and past captain, Peter Machin. L-R: Matthew Evans, Javier Dieguez and sponsor Peter Machin

Some terrific scores were posted with 38 points only good enough for tied 5th place! Regular playing partners Peter King (11hcp) and Andrew Johnson (10hcp) joined forces to secure second place with 43 points and husband and wife pairing, John (5hcp) and Rachel Downey (13hcp) both had one birdie each and a string of pars to furnish them with 40 points and third place.

However, the day belonged to Evans and Dieguez. The pair only arranged to play together recently in Javier’s restaurant, but they dovetailed well on the course with the defining moment Evans’ hole in one on the 8th hole – a superbly struck 7 iron into a stiff breeze proving to be the perfect club.

A solid run of pars afterwards and another birdie from Dieguez resulted in a tremendous cup winning performance. The fun putting competition in the Clubhouse afterwards was won by Mark Oglesby and Stewart Smith won nearest the pin in two shots on the 1stt hole, but no prizes for guessing who won nearest the pin on the 8th!

SIMPSON & SMITH VICTORIOUS AT BURLEY Sandy Simpson and Simon Smith won the Burley Championship mixed foursomes with a medal score of 70. Sandy and Simon are Club President and Vice Captain respectively. They defeated a strong field of mixed teams competing for this, the club’s premier mixed competition.

Malibu-style surf culture has arrived at three Crown Golf clubs, with the trial introduction of GolfBoard rentals at The Hertfordshire, Paultons and Sherfield Oaks.

Despite the poor weather in the morning this rain delayed competition was played in glorious sunshine in the afternoon. Many of the competitors found the meadl format to be difficult proven by the fact that only the winners managed a sub-par round.

Golf Academy

Simon Blanshard at Paultons Golf Centre in Hampshire said: “Golfers start out sceptical, but they come back every time and people are now coming here to play just because we have GolfBoards to rent”.

“GolfBoards make golf fun, even if you happen to be playing badly!” said Richard Woolley at Sherfield Oaks Golf Club. “They bring a new dynamic to the sport and I’m sure they will continue to be popular”. With safety in mind, golfers are asked to perform a supervised figure-of-eight manoeuvre in an open space when they first rent a GolfBoard at a Crown Golf club. They must also watch a GolfBoard operations video prior to their first rental, and there is also a disclaimer to sign. The GolfBoard trial at Crown Golf lasts three months, and if it is successful the group plans to roll out GolfBoards across more venues in 2016.

OCTOBER 2015

Continuing the saga of a late-convert golfer’s search for glory on the greens. . . THAT’S the trouble with secondhand lessons: you’re never quite sure if you’re getting the real thing. You know what I mean. Whenever one of our group – the Wednesday Tenners (10am, that is) – has a lesson, he speeds back to the rest to pass on what he’s learnt. We all do it. I’ve had lessons from men I’ve never even met. The trouble is that sometimes the message gets mauled in the process. The word fairly raced around that a pro up near Dorking had a revolutionary approach. Marty, our resident Yorkshireman (every group has one), who’d been for a lesson, excitedly told us all about it on our three-day break at the Dorset Golf and Country Club. It was startling stuff… For his drive, he placed the ball at least five inches to the left of his left foot. The idea – he claimed - was that you’d hit the ball on the up. Well, we all tried it. Most missed it completely. Some topped it. Quite a few fell over. The language was terrible. Marty couldn’t do it either. Off he went to

My golfing lessons from experts I’ve never met DIARY OF A BUS-PASS GOLFER

A peeved Marty said he very much doubted if they played golf at all in Scotland. ‘What would they do if they lost a ball? Pay for a second one – never!’ I think what really upset Marty was that the Scot had nicked his golf lesson for free. He started saying that since his lesson has cost £20 we all ought to pay him £2 each. We all forgot it soon enough when we were out on the club’s 27 holes. It’s marvellous place for a break. We stayed in what looked like Alpine chalets, beautifully equipped, and the food was excellent. So was the drink.

By Bob Evans give the pro a call. When he came back, he said he’d got it wrong. We somehow managed to conceal our astonishment. What the pro meant to say was that you should tee the ball up opposite your left foot, but line up your driver six inches behind that. That became the lowest point of the swing which then ensured that the club swung through that point and struck the ball on the up.

Oh yes, and you had to drop your right foot back a few inches to keep it straight. Was this correct? We all tried it again, and this time we all remained standing, which was a good start. Half our group said the top-spin helped with length. The other half said it was rubbish. Then, amazingly, it got rather racist. Andrew, a Perth man, said the day would never dawn when he would take advice on golf from a Yorkshireman.

GET AROUND FOR YEARS TO COME

It was after a few of those, late at night, that Andrew and Marty started arguing again, this time about who started the First World War. You know those closing-time arguments when everyone’s talking rubbish? This ended when Andrew said he blamed Clemenceau, and Marty protested that Ray Clemenceau was probably the best goalie Liverpool ever had. That was the level of the debate. The golf was worse. We all loved every minute of it.

COWDRAY PARK GOLF CLUB Everywhere you want to be

Now is the Winter of our Discontent! Survival guide to playing in the driving rain Coping with wet weather on the golf course can be tough… here is my survival guide to playing in the driving rain. Something that seems fairly apt considering the summertime we have had the last few years. Firstly and foremost, remain positive in these conditions. Everyone is in the same boat (only this morning I nearly needed a boat to get off the course) and it is wasted energy blaming the weather for poor shots and scores. Remain calm and focus on taking every shot as it comes. If you have a shocker (and they happen to everyone in these conditions) then just laugh! This sort of weather makes us feel alive so try to breathe in that fresh wet air and chill out! Remember the state of our weather is completely uncontrollable so focus on the things you can control; your attitude, swing and general mood. Swing wise it is important to be conservative with both length of swing and amount of effort you put into each shot. It is easy to lose control when conditions become slippery. Aim to swing the club only ? of the way back and allow an extra club or two. What you lose in distance you should gain in accuracy so don’t try and force a shot. Ensure you keep your tempo smooth and swing at only 70% effort… Ensure you don’t change your pre-shot routine. Sometimes I find players tend to rush at the ball in an attempt to get in out of the rain as soon as possible. Not a good move.

Maintain a smooth practice swing and make sure you recreate this onto the ball. Have a solid image in your head of the shot you want to hit before stepping up to the ball. Lastly preparation is everything! Ensure you have all you need to cope with these conditions. A decent set of waterproofs are essential. A few gloves in a plastic bag will ensure that you are never too soggy in the grip department. Go one step better than this and invest in a Footjoy Rain Grip glove… the wetter it gets the more secure your hold on the club becomes! I wouldn’t play in the rain without one. If you have a Powacaddy then make the most of your umbrella holder. This will keep your equipment dry as a bone for the duration of your round. Hang your glove up inside the brolley between shots and hang a towel here too to dry your clubs before taking your hold and stepping into the rain. Playing in the rain doesn’t have to be wet and miserable… it can be wet and productive as long as you approach the game with a positive attitude and you are prepared. Good luck and get out there!!! I give lessons in golf psychology and usually include it as part of my lessons at Hamptworth Golf & Country Club and Cowdray Park, for more information on these visit www.katiedawkinsgolf.co.uk or call me on 07780 684334. I’m now back teaching so contact me for availability.

Those immortal words from the pen of William Shakespeare sum up the feelings of many golfers in the Winter… ………but should they? Okay, it’s no more shorts for a while and it’s not so easy to swing with the thermals and waterproofs on, but there is no reason for it to be a Winter of discontent. On the contrary, Winter is a time when a golfer has time to bed in something new, be it a change in the putting stroke, grooving in a swing change, a pre shot routine or some short game techniques. Yes , Winter is a great time to work hard and get better. A great time to leave no stone unturned in the quest to be as good as you can be! The reason you need this time is that it takes a great deal of practice for any change to become efficient and to feel natural. In a previous Tee Times I talked about a substance in the body called Myelin. Myelin is an insulating layer, or sheath, that forms around nerves, including those in the brain and spinal cord.

Not because what they are trying to achieve is wrong, but inefficient, from a physiological stand point.

The purpose of the Myelin sheath is to allow electrical impulses to transmit quickly and efficiently along the nerve cells. Without the Myelin the messages sent through the nerves would escape and the movement would be very inefficient.

So what I am saying is, if you begin working on something that feels a bit awkward, (you can see the shots or putts are better in practice, but it’s not quite working on the course), don’t give up, give it time.

The good news is that when you repeat a particular movement over and over again, it gradually becomes more efficient. This is because the nerve cells responsible for creating that movement receive extra layers of Myelin over time.

If you really want to get better at golf you must always be willing to fail. You can’t be paralyzed by fear of failure or you will never push yourself. Keep pushing. Believe in yourself and in your vision of being a better player. Make this the Winter of content!!

The downside is that the action you are trying to replace is already coated and remains efficient. Unfortunately the body doesn’t know much about your golf action.

Pictured is Adrian Mylrea, she is definitely positive about learning and is making giant strides forward.

So what I am saying is that old movements never go away, you are literally learning something new which, in the initial stages, isn’t very efficient. This is why many golfers who achieve great things with one action, change it and lose their games.
