We can also look forward to Tokyo, where golf has a much higher status, and with the television numbers we already have I have no doubt we will stay on board. ‘For us it is important to ignite the interest around the world. I am sure this will be a huge game-changer for golf. It has been said many times before, but the proof of it is now here.’

Why pro golfers have hips that are egg-shaped

ENGLAND Golf is launching an initiative to stimulate and encourage innovation and enterprise across the sport. It aims to accelerate and build on current work to develop new ways of engaging more people and broadening the appeal of golf. Nick Pink, Chief Executive of England Golf said: ‘Since I joined the organisation a few months ago, I have been impressed with the number of innovators and entrepreneurs I have come across within the sport.

PROFESSIONAL golfers are likely to have oddly-shaped hip joints, researchers have discovered.

physical and mental health. But golf puts huge forces through the hips every time a player swings the club.’

A team at the University of Warwick team put 55 elite players into medical MRI scanners – and found to their surprise that many had egg-shaped right hips. Their left joints were the usual ball shape.

As a player goes through the golf swing, the two hips rotate in different directions and at different speeds. The egg shape seen on some of the scans of professional golfers was visible in 16 per cent of right hips (the rear hip during a swing in a right-handed player) - and four per cent of left hips (the front hip during the swing in a right-handed player).

It is not clear whether playing golf causes the deformity, the experts say in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. About one in five of the 2015 Scottish Hydro Challenge players had hip pain. Lead researcher Prof Damian Griffin said: ‘The shape mismatch between the hips might explain some of the pain reported by the golfers.’ Dr Andrew Murray, specialist sports doctor for the European Tour, said: ‘Overall, we know golf can provide considerable health benefits, with likely improved longevity, and better

The condition is known as cam rotation, and reduces the natural range of movement of the hip.

Co-researcher Dr Edward Dickenson said: ‘Our findings have brought up new questions to be answered.

We have to be ready to overcome the first and exploit the latter.’

‘What remains to be established is whether professional golfers develop these shapes because of the way they are using their hips, or whether players with these hip shapes are more likely to become professional.’

The Yelverton assistant leapt from the chasing pack to win by two shots and admitted that his form this year has suffered by too much study.

‘Taking final exams last week lifted a weight off my mind,’ said the 36-year-old former Challenge Tour player who was a late PGA entrant. ‘I couldn’t expect a lot as I have neglected my game a bit this year because I’ve buried my head in my books. I enjoyed two solid days.’ Signing for 69 and a decisive five-under-par 66 sunk overnight leaders Paul Hendriksen (Ivybridge) and Giuseppe Licata (Chipping Sodbury) who started the day two ahead.

Hendriksen’s target this year has been to return to the Play Offs and qualify again for the PGA Cup. He made two early birdies to extend his lead, but he faltered until a 35foot birdie putt disappeared on the 17th.

He won the seniors trophy, from Gary Milne (Woodbury Park) and former RND professional Iain Parker. Lydia Hall, 28, followed her remarkable victory in the Welsh Professional Championship at Tenby by dominating the women’s event. A final round of two-under 69 brought a 13-shot victory over Rachel Lewis (Vale Resort) with Jamie-Lee Casling (Cotswold Hills) third.

GOLF IN BRITTANY A nip across the channel has long been part of the calendar of the British golfers in the south of England, ease of travel with ferries and the Eurotunnel, made it the ideal short break Michael Rees destination. For a time the resorts of Southern Europe overtook the Normandy and Brittany coasts as first choice destinations. Recent events have indicated a change in the scene, and so once again Brittany was added to the diary for a short break, and a first class decision it proved to be. Our original choice of an overnight ferry from Portsmouth to St Malo was disrupted by an unfortunate chain of events, which meant that we had to change our itinerary to a day crossing to Cherbourg, with the resultant drive down the Cherbourg peninsula to get to the golfing delights of Northern Brittany. The first port of call was Golf de Coutainville, the ideal way to settle into three days of fun golf, played in a relaxed but competitive manner as is the way amongst old friends. Hardly three men in a boat, but more three men on a buggy. Not a long course by any means but well laid out and in very good condition. A new venue for all of us, and an enjoyable intro. The course is located on the seafront in the heart of the resort of Coutainville, it is a combination of links land and parkland, with lakes and water hazards to add to the test, the water on the 2nd and the 16th making those holes ones to remember. The drive from Coutainville to Dinan and our hotel accommodation was longer than we had estimated, and with a stop in Granville for dinner, it was late evening when we eventually checked into the conveniently

located Hotel du Chateau and retired for the night. With the luxury of a mid-morning tee time at Dinard Golf Club, a short drive away, breakfast was taken at a civilised hour. Dinan is a really charming town, with a well preserved castle and it is without doubt one of the most attractive and well preserved small towns. It is a walled Breton enclave, with a fascinating river front, and the medieval town centre is full of half-timbered buildings cobbled streets and delightful eateries of all types. The perfect location to use as a base for golf in the region. It has been a number of years since I last played at Dinard Golf Club, founded in 1887 is it one of the oldest clubs in Europe, second only to Pau it is claimed. The course is actually located in Saint Briac Sur Mer, a short way out of the town of Dinard. It was formed by a small group of British residents living in Dinard in the late 19th century. Scots architect Tom Dunn was engaged to design the course, set out on the cliff tops with spectacular panoramic views of the Channel. It soon achieved cult status and was visited by many well-known figures. During the second war it was mined, and did not re-open until 1949, and it is now one of

the most charming courses on the continent. The classic art deco style clubhouse fits the club very well, and it is great to sit out on the terrace overlooking the course and enjoy the after round liquid refreshment. It was with anticipation that we returned to Dinan to scout out a suitable restaurant for dinner, and we did not have to walk far to find a typical French bar/restaurant with a superb menu on display, and a jovial host to entice us to sit down and eat. La Duchesse Anne Restaurant, owned by Andrea and Jacky was simply wonderful, excellent food and wine without harming the wallet. Opinion proved that we had saved the best golf until last, after a drive to Pleneuf Val Andre, and the spectacular course set high on the cliff tops with wonderful views of the coast and the sea. This is one of the modern courses in the region, designed by Alain Prat and opened in 1992. The modern clubhouse is typical of recent designs in France, with plenty of glass and simplistic in design. It is not too long at 5900 metres, but the difficulty is keeping the ball in play, especially when there is a swirling breeze. There are two unforgettable holes on the back nine, the short par 4 10th, and the magnificent 11th,

played from an elevated tee which is perched on the cliff edge. The tee shot is to an angled fairway making it a true three shotter and a difficult par 5. All in all, a great golf course, justifying its place in the top 100 courses in France. A visit to remember and savour, a view endorsed by all. Sadly our local restaurant was not open the following eveing, so it was time to scout further afield, and without too much difficulty we came upon another great find. Les Trois Lunes Restaurant is ultra-modern in design, chic service and excellent food. There is a feeling that it would be difficult not to find a good eating house in this town of Dinan. Sadly our trip had come to an end, but after a lengthy nightcap, it was time to retire and be ready for the return journey the following morning. With such a short drive to St Malo, and a very comfortable crossing to Portsmouth, the journey home was a good conclusion to an excellent short golf break. One to recommend for a short or medium term golf trips, without reservation, although in the words of my companions, the overnight ferry to St Malo on the way out would have saved a lot of driving!

. . . l e v a r T l l i W s b u l C e Hav PORTUGAL FROM THE NORTH TO THE SOUTH The Trent Jones Trail Portugal has long been a favourite destination for British golfers and those from Northern Europe, Scandinavia in particular, when relief from winter chills is most rewarding. The Michael Rees Algarve has been popular ever since the opening of the Penina course in the 1930’s, designed by Sir Henry Cotton, which heralded a new and exciting golf destination. The oldest course is in the far north of the country, Oporto Golf Club, which was founded by Port wine traders in 1890, but the two centres most visited are the region around the capital of Lisbon, and the Algarve, in both directions to the East and West of Faro airport. The secret of maximising a short golf break is simple, set off early and leave departure as late as possible, and plan the timing well. This is particularly true when interim travel is necessary to play the courses chosen.

This area is blessed with several fine courses, but Quinta da Marina has the added advantage of an excellent five star hotel attached, The Hotel Quinta da marina Resort, which was to be our resting place for the first night after eighteen holes of golf.

It goes without saying that there is a very good restaurant and bar in the clubhouse, a standard we have been accustomed to see when visiting Portugal. With bent grass greens and tees, Bermuda fairways and ryegrass in the rough, it is necessary to be aware of the different shots required to get the best results, particularly around the greens. The Trent Jones philosophy is to disturb nature as little as possible, whilst making his courses playable and enjoyable, but capable of being toughened when the need arises. Quinta da marina fits the description to a tee, and has hosted events on the Ladies European Tour, the PGA European Seniors, and also the European Challenge Tour. Trent Jones Snr was himself a scratch golfer as a teenager, and later became one of the most widely respected and recognised golf course architects of his generation, with over 450 courses in his portfolio located in forty two states in America and twenty three other countries around the world,

Then onward to Cascais and the resort of Quinta da Marina, and the first class golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones Snr, and regularly rated in the Top Two Hundred courses in Europe. Cascais is a delightful place, just thirty minutes from the centre of Lisbon, it is a place of beautiful white sand beaches, perfect facilities for water sports, and the town centre is a fascinating amalgam of narrow streets filled with typical restaurants and shops, and a perfect place for an evening stroll, or a relaxing meal or drink.

The Onyria Group , which was started some twenty years ago owns Quinta, it is a family enterprise and the resort was the first project in the field of hotel management, a venture that has become extremely successful.

The food was exquisite, service superb and it rightfully received the unanimous endorsement from all the party of seasoned journalists, the perfect way to conclude the stay in Cascais before journeying south the Troia peninsula.

The course itself is not overly long at just over 6000 yards, but the water comes into play on four holes, particularly the 18th, a very good finishing hole, and the short holes are all interesting, the five par fives offer the chances of improving the card with a birdie or two if the putter is working well, as the greens are fast and true. The sea views early in the round remind you of the beautiful Atlantic coastline, and the time to have a lingering glance is well worth while. A thoroughly enjoyable golfing resort course and the ideal way to start the tour.

The icing on the cake for our visit to Cascais and the Quinta da Marina came in the evening with a visit to the Monte Mar restaurant. It is a renowned restaurant with fish predominantly on the menu, you are aware as soon as you enter, with lobster tanks and display cabinets with all the catch on display.

A LOOK BACK ON HOW THE GOLDEN TOUCH OF HAMPSHIRE’S JUSTIN Rose, gentleman though he is, could not resist a little jibe about Rory McIlroy.

‘So I guess he watched,’ Justin Rose laughed as he revealed that McIlroy had texted congratulations on the Hampshire golfer’s Olympic gold medal performance. McIlroy was among the high-profile absentees from the men's event, and had said ahead of the Games that professional golfers cared more about Claret Jugs and Green jackets than gold medals, and that he would not even be watching the Rio golf on TV. McIlroy was absent, along with world number one Jason Day, U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson and two-time Major winner Jordan Spieth, quoting fears about the Zica virus. But the Rio tournament, with big crowds and a thrilling climax, was hailed as an overwhelming success, leading to a consensus among those who did compete that the top players who stayed away were probably regretting it. Rose believes the scenes generated by the Olympic tournament will play to the competitive instincts of the absentees and ensure they will want to be a part of it at the Tokyo Games in 2020. Rubbing home the truth, the North Hants golfer reminded them that they have to wait four years for that. ‘That's the big thing about the Olympics,’ said Rose with a grin. After all the negativity and apathy that split the sport in the build-up, golf's return to the

The crowds generated a unique atmosphere, in stark contrast to other venues, particularly the main stadium, where the ranks of empty seats often generated a funereal atmosphere. The golfers taking part even seemed to relax into the whole mood, with none minding play being frequently interrupted by fans who were not well versed in the all the protocols of the game. Rogue camera clicks were aplenty, perhaps tolerated by the realisation among the golfers that these were actually welcome because people who were witnessing golf for the first time wanted to record the event.

CRITICS ahead of the Rio Olympics golf said the choice of 72-hole strokeplay could have been more imaginative.

This, in a way, supported the reasoning behind the game's Olympic inclusion after more than a century, that the global authorities saw it as an opportunity to display golf to a worldwide audience.

While it still produced a memorable Rio rumble between Justin Rose and silver medallist Henrik Stenson, changes could still be put in place in for the next Games in Japan.

‘It was quite rowdy at times out there,’ said International Golf Federation President Peter Dawson. ‘But it added to the atmosphere and there is nothing wrong with that. That's just what we wanted.

R&A boss Peter Dawson said: ‘We will be putting our heads together, really quite soon. Tokyo is four years away, but we need to determine these things a long way in advance.

‘It was a very different atmosphere from a normal golf event. There was a very international crowd, not all of them accustomed to golf tournaments.’

‘It is a necessary conversation. I've no doubt that the 72-hole strokeplay format is golf's way of determining a champion and I'm sure that will continue to have a place in the Olympic Games. It would be crazy to have a format at the Olympics that wasn't one that chose champions in the wider game. So it is a question of can we add to it, can we modify?’

In many ways, Rose was the perfect winner because no one embraced the Olympic project more enthusiastically. The English star prioritised Rio in his schedule, and GB Team Leader Jamie Spence commissioned green contour maps to ensure his players were the best prepared. Caddie Mark Fulcher scouted the course at first light every morning and Rose's emphatic celebrations showed how much it meant.

After completing victory, the champion shared a special phone call with his sevenyear-old son Leo, who shed tears of joy over dad's triumph.

‘That's never happened before,’ Rose revealed. His young son could grasp how special was this moment. ‘This has resonated far wider than my U.S. Open win,’ admitted Rose who said he had received congratulatory messages from ‘the darkest recesses’ of his phone's contacts book. Mr Dawson, who as R&A Chief Executive was one of the leading figures who pushed for golf's inclusion, had a similar experience.

‘I've had more messages after the men's Olympic golf event than I've had after Open Championships,’ he said. ‘The reaction has been terrific. These smaller countries that asked us, begged us, to get golf into the Olympics were dead right.

How could something so brilliant emerge from the most unpromising circumstances imaginable? Wasn't golf meant to stick out like a sore thumb as the unwanted new offspring of these Olympics?’

‘It is going to increase exposure in their countries, get more government recognition and funding to the game. Apart from expanding our competitive landscape, this is why we did this.’

out. Even the Open last month was submerged for a while by all the bad tidings regarding Olympic golf. Naturally, all those who think the sport has no place in the Games couldn't wait to weigh in as well. How do you explain, therefore, the four days that produced one of the real feelgood stories of these Olympics? I went to the athletics on Saturday night as a paying spectator to watch Mo Farah and Co, and the difference between the vibe at that halfempty stadium and all the happy, enthralled faces at the sold-out golf the next day was positively startling. So can we please give the tired old line a rest that it shouldn't be here because it's not the pinnacle of the sport? Here we've just seen wonderful competition, 60 players who put their heart and soul into it and walked around with smiles on their faces and spectators whose unbounded enthusiasm was totally infectious. If a sport that brings that intoxicating mix to the party doesn't belong, what does? Heck, it was so good even Rory McIlroy switched over from the gymnastics or whatever to watch, and duly sent a congratulatory text to the gold medallist. Justin Rose, with a mischievous grin said: ‘Rory said he had been rooting for me and how pleased he was that I won because he could see what it meant to me, so obviously he was watching.’

'It won't sit well with the guys who didn't turn up because they will have seen how good it was and they're competitors at heart, that's why they're great golfers. You'll see them all in Tokyo next time. 'Until then, though, they're going to have to put up with me having bragging rights. When

'We had one of the best events I've ever been involved with, and I think we did some good for golf,' he said.

‘The spirit and the enjoyment will be the things I'll take away from it. That and, speaking personally for a moment, the fact we had not only a British winner but such a strong supporter for golf in the Olympics.'

SOUTH Korea's Inbee Park played her part in making history as she won the women's Olympic golf tournament in Rio. Great Britain's Charley Hull finished just outside the medals as Park shot a final-round 66 to finish on 16 under, five clear of world number one Lydia Ko of New Zealand. China's Shanshan Feng took bronze, a shot further back on 10 under par. Hull carded a three-under-par round of 68 to finish tied for seventh on eight under as women's golf returned to the Games for the first time since 1900. Catriona Matthew of Great Britain finished on level par, 29th overall. Japan's Harukyo Nomura, American Stacy Lewis and South Korea's Hee Young Yang shared fourth place on nine under.

Mum says: To play for your country like this is wonderful ANNIE Rose, mother of Justin, admitted she found it hard to believe her son is an Olympic champion. Rose's mother and his wife Kate watched every shot of his nerve-racking triumph in Rio, and the moment was made extra special when they learned that the final Sunday was Father's Day in Brazil. Rose's father Ken died from leukaemia in 2002. It was also Father's Day in the United States when Rose won the U.S. Open at Merion in 2013. Annie said: 'It was wonderful for all four days. We've watched every hole.

That was so good and to see my son out there, he has worked so hard on his golf ever since he was little and to see him playing in an Olympics was enough as it was, and then to actually top it off with the gold...’

HAYLING’S LATE CHARGE WINS MILLENNIUM PAIRS CHAMPION CLUB TITLE CHALLENGE

The three-man team from Hayling in Hampshire staged a tremendous late charge to win the English Champion Club title by two shots at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club, on the Suffolk/Essex border. After yesterday’s first round on the Gainsborough course, Toby Burden, Richard Harris and Kevin Hickman were 19-over par, in 16th place and 14 shots behind the halfway leaders, Woburn. Today, they were still 19-over par after completing 27 holes, but they zipped through the final nine in a team total of eight-under par and rocketed to the top of the leaderboard. Burden and Hickman both went round in four-under 67 while Harris added level par 71 for a total of 11-over par. They finished two clear of Worksop, Nottinghamshire, and Woburn, from Berks, Bucks & Oxon, who tied on 13-over par. Spalding, Lincolnshire, and Henbury, Gloucestershire, were a further shot back. This is Hayling’s first victory in this prestigious championship and now the team will represent England in the European Men’s Club Trophy at Aroeira Golf Club, Portugal, from 20-22 October. Harris remarked: “Everyone at the club is really happy and excited. For me I’m still asking if it’s really happened because we were so far behind after the first round – and now we’ll be representing England.” Burden was first to stake their claim, and his 67 improved on his opening round by 11 shots. Hayling is a links course and, with Friday’s practice round washed out by heavy rain, he had initially struggled to adapt to the hilly, treelined course where water is a feature.

“But I got used to it and went at everything today. Why not? We had nothing to lose,” he said. Between them, the team devised a game plan for today which Burden stuck to and was well-rewarded with five birdies and just one bogey. “We knew we’d have to improve by about eight shots. I’ve done four of them!” he said after signing his card.

Harris was next and his 71 and also improved on his first day score by 11 shots. He was on the closing holes when he learned from the on-course scoring that the team was in contention and despite the nerves he birdied the long 16th and pulled off a great par save from 25 yards right of the 18th.

“When we started playing we were just going to shoot the score and see what happened. But the pressure starts to build when you know you are in contention” he said. Finally Hickman, who was one-over yesterday, completed the fightback with his bogey-free 67. “I didn’t really know what my team-mates were doing, I just focussed on my own game and did what I could to see if we could come first. I played solid and didn’t make any mistakes.”

Roope is Order of Merit Champion Blackmoor’s Colin Roope has become the first player to land both the Hampshire Order of Merit titles in the season – having become just the second name on the Cullen Quaich after Hayling’s Darren Walkley grabbed the gross prize in the competition’s first two seasons.

He was level par to the turn before playing the back nine in four-under with a birdie on the 11th and three in a row from the 13th. “We needed something!” said Hickman, who has been a Hayling member for only 18 months. He was playing alongside Worksop’s Andy Oates, who went round in three-under 68 after an eventful round which confirmed his club as runners-up on countback. He chipped in twice, for an eagle on the sixth and a birdie on the eighth to reach the turn in two-under. Worksop have won the championship once before, in 1993, and have been regulars at the final in recent years with frequent top ten places. “It’s the best competition because anything can happen and it’s a great weekend. We bring our families and supporters and it’s brilliant,” said Oates. His team-mates were Martin Foulkes, a past winner of the English mid-amateur championship, and Keir Stockdale.

The weather was fine and the course was presented in an excellent condition by Phil Walker and his team. A light lunch was served after nine holes and dinner following the afternoon’s 18 holes in the Charter Suite. The 2016 Winners were Barrie Elliott and Mike Bambrough – Meon Valley Golf Club. Woburn’s team of Gary Mumford, Jack Bartlett and Harry Noton set the halfway pace with their opening score of five over par. Today they were eight-over, slipping back from top place.

Roope only switched from Farnham Golf Club to Blackmoor at the start of the year having moved down the A3 to Clanfield.

Spalding’s Simon Richardson topped the individual table on six under-par after rounds of 70 and today’s bogey-free 66. He was two-under going out with birdies on the 1st and 5th and then had three in a row from the 14th. “I birdied the first today and that was it,” he said. “I probably left four or five shots out there out there as well.

The 36-year-old recruitment company director needed a second place finish at his club’s open held at the end of August to secure a lead going into the Courage, the final strokeplay event on the county calendar.

“It’s disappointing the team has come up a bit short but from a personal point of view it’s nice to shoot the scores.” He finished the event three clear of Hayling’s Hickman and four ahead of Henbury’s Nick Day.

These shoes are made for walking.. Telford golfer Anton Reader makes his living as a van driver but it’s driving of a different sort that has booked him a spot on the plane to a World Championship in Oklahoma U.S.A.

Marilyn Monroe once quoted “give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world”. Okay, this may not be quite so relevant when it comes to golf, however, we golfers know how important it is to wear a comfy pair of shoes to stand a chance of a decent round of golf. With so many varieties of golfing footwear on offer these days, we can indulge in a bit of style, bright jazzy colours and hybrid options that look more like trainers and walking shoes rather than the traditional, masculine lace ups. However, it’s not just about fashion, as golf shoes are now considered a weapon in the armoury of ‘game improvers’ with a fast swing-speed, or a larger golfer needing more support and stability. Thankfully, as a shorty with a pretty average golf swing speed I won’t have to resort to wearing ‘clodhoppers’! Nevertheless, shoes are like friends – they can support you or take you down, something I discovered when I developed a painful condition of policeman’s heel from wearing a pair of expensive but inflexible golf shoes. Bearing in mind there’s nothing worse than limping off a course with sore, cold or soggy feet, there’s a lot to think about when it comes to buying shoes.

Anton, 46, put on an incredible display of driving this weekend when he took the American Golf Long Drive Championship Over 45 title in front of Sky Sports’ cameras, and with it, secured qualification for the World Long Drive Championship in Oklahoma. • If you play on a wet course, then it’s worth investing in a pair of waterproof boots so you can confidently wade up to your ankles to play a shot, knowing you’ll still keep your tootsies warm and dry. Alternatively move to a drier course! • For those who prefer to avoid granny knots in their shoe laces, there’s the Velcro option or even the new wire lace-ups with tightening gadgets just like ski boots • If you suffer from hot feet, then try the new, cool, open toed sandal, although avoid bunkers unless you enjoy the sensation of being at the beach with sand between your toes. Thankfully many of the new styles no longer have detachable spikes, a bonus as far as I’m concerned as they frequently fall off, so you end up walking around feeling lopsided. Although the best example of being off balance happened to a friend of mine when she was playing in an Open Competition. She couldn’t understand why her set up didn’t feel quite right as she stood over the ball on the 1st tee, until she looked down and realised she was still wearing her day shoes – a pair of wedges. You never know, they may have added a whole new dimension to her game!

Anton made it through to the American Golf Final after qualifying first through a competition at his local store and then at a regional event. Once at the final Anton was a model of consistency hitting winning drives of 340 and 343 yards in his quarter and semi-final match up.

“I heard about the championship after calling in to my local American Golf, where Nigel Thomas, the assistant manager and a golf buddy of mine suggested I enter. The final was a brilliant day. Coming face to face with guys I'd seen hit huge drives on T.V. was a little intimidating, but I knew my chance was as good as anyone's on a good day,” commented Anton. Once in the final it was just a question of whether or not Anton could hold his nerve and reproduce the consistency that had served him so well throughout the day. After a nervy couple of blows he sent out a huge 343 yard drive which his opponent, David Willmore from Brize Norton, couldn’t match. After the event Anton reflected, “Winning the final against Dave was the best golf moment I've ever had. I know I can hit a ball but I'd just come for a day out, winning was a pipe dream. Things like that don't happen to people like me, it's a memory I'll treasure for years to come, well until next year anyway! I Can't wait to get out to Oklahoma and represent American Golf and Garmin. I'll be giving it my all in the world finals and can’t even believe I’m saying World Finals!”

Daniel Gathercole, Director of Marketing and Communications at American Golf added, “Anton is such a lovely guy and wore his heart on his sleeve all day. He’ll make a fantastic ambassador for American Golf and Garmin and will stand a real chance of making an impact at the World Finals.” Anton’s winning effort is on Sky Sports 4 on September 20th when you’ll be able to see his fantastic reactions to victory, including an impromptu climb into the crowd. Also on display will be the Ladies and Under 45’s championship where American Golf has uncovered some truly world class talent to put on a plane to the U.S. along with Telford’s very own Long Driver. The Long Drive Championship is a vital part of American Golf’s drive to get more people out playing golf more often. 2017 will see a series of free events added to the current event schedule when the Scratch and Individual Championships, Family Cup, Pitch & Putt Championship and Adventure Golf Championship will be added to the Junior Championship, Long Drive, 9 Hole, Seniors and Ladies.

Continuing the saga of a late-convert golfer’s search for glory on the greens. . . IF it hadn’t been for sport, I probably would’ve married Caroline. It was my first serious romance. You know what it’s like when you’re 19, and the whole world is waiting to be explored. As indeed was Caroline. We were both dizzy because we were the first couple in the world to discover the potency of love plus lust. But then, so were you, I expect. Then we joined the local tennis club. She’d played a lot. I’d played a bit. No matter, I was a man and she wasn’t, so no problems there. Even so, when I saw her swooping around the court like a sun-tanned swallow, picking up half-volleys off the deck, rising in the air for a smash so fast I never saw it. An uncomfortable thought popped up.

HAMPSHIRE’S Fiona Todd is the new English women’s Par 3 champion – taking the title by the narrowest of margins at Ampfield Golf Club in her home county.

A PAIR of Dorset women golfers have won the national England Golf Trust stableford competition, which has raised over £5,000 to support young people who need financial help to play the game.

She won on countback from Janice Hounsham, from Blacknest, Hampshire, after both players tied with net scores of threeover 57. They finished a shot ahead of five players on 58.

Sarah Holt and Sarah Lethbridge, from Sherborne (image above right by Leaderboard Photography), teamed up to score 47 points in the betterball final at King’s Norton Golf Club, Worcestershire.

‘It’s absolutely amazing,’ said Fiona, a 32handicapper from Gosport and Stokes Bay. ‘I just didn’t expect it. I didn’t realise how well I’d done until we added up the scores at the end.’ She played in the competition for the first time last year, making up a team with two friends from her club. They so enjoyed the mix of good competition and a dash of garden party atmosphere – helped by a glass of Pimm’s and a slice of cake - that they made a date to return. Now Fiona is planning to defend next year.

‘I’ve really enjoyed it, it’s been brilliant. The weather was fantastic, the course was beautiful – Ampfield have really done themselves proud,’ she said. Fiona took up golf about six years ago and is hooked on the game, explaining: ‘I love playing with the girls, I really enjoy team competitions and playing for the club.’ The team prize was won by the trio of Dorothy Shore and Carol Owen of Bramshaw, with Pat Geary of Royal Winchester. They had an aggregate score of 182 and won by a shot from a group from Cams Hall Estate.

They won by two points from the team from Belton Woods, Lincolnshire, who took second place on countback from Redditch, Worcestershire. Fourth place went to Perranporth, Cornwall, on 41 points, also securing their spot on countback. The competition was designed to raise funds for the Trust which provides grants and bursaries for young men and women in education or aged up to 21. Over 100 clubs entered the competition, which began with a club qualifying round, and around 80 more also made donations to the Trust.

If I had married Caroline, I know what would have happened. She would deliberately miss a two-inch putt on the 18th. Who cares about adultery and unreasonable behaviour? But pity – now, that’s grounds for divorce without a doubt.

Sarah Holt, who plays off 16 said: ‘We’re absolutely delighted to win – and stunned! We didn’t really get into any trouble, but if one of us did the other scored well. We just dovetailed.’ Sherborne are regular supporters of the Trust and Sarah Lethbridge, a 22-handicapper, added: ‘If raising money helps young people stay in golf and gets more people playing golf, it has to be good.” She took up golf about three years ago and says: ‘It keeps me sane! I’m a chef and I work very long hours, so golf gets me out in the fresh air and makes me shut off from my job.’

HOLISTIC GOLF INSTRUCTION Hampshire Ladies Golf COURSES AT LYMINGTON G.C.

HOCKLEY G.C. COME OUT ON TOP AT HULL SHIELD 78 ladies from 39 clubs took part in this year’s Hull Shield at Hockley Golf Club. Sunshine prevailed all day on what must have been one of the hottest days of the year, a dramatic contrast to last year’s event at Petersfield which had to be abandoned mid round due to torrential rain. A very gentle breeze made play bearable on top of the South Downs and good scoring was possible and achieved by a few. Ladies’ Captain Jean White, Vice Captain Wendy Evans and their Hockley ladies (and Howard!) were in great demand ball spotting but most of the players were hitting steadily but getting undone on the greens. Hockley greens are renowned as fast and true and so they proved with a stimp reading of 10.4. The Hull Shield is an aggregate medal competition with both scores totalled and it was tight at the top as the CSS rose to 74.

For perhaps the first time, holistic golf instruction courses will be available through the winter months at Lymington (Walhampton) Golf Centre. A shared idea between Colin Murray (PGA coach) and Hugh Townend (experienced clufitter/maker) has come to fruition in a series of three day courses starting in November. The course includes:• Video swing analysis and coaching • Benefits of playing with fitted clubs • Mind training workshop • Tools to conquer the mental game • Golf specific fitness and mobility • Individual physical, mental and swing objectives

Hazel Quarrington from Portsmouth shot a magnificent 69 and with partner Teresa Paffett came 3rd. Runners up with a combined 145 were Julie Newbold and Pauline Davies from Royal Winchester but winners by 1 were Hockley’s pair of Judie Lewis and Chris Quinn both shooting nett 72s.

Other members of the coaching team are Stuart Robertson, a vastly experienced physio who will assess/advise on the mobility of the students for golf. Improving the mental approach of students will be Helen Clarke, author of “10 Secrets to Sporting success” who will run a “mind training” workshop. Hugh will assess how suited are student’s clubs to their game, adapting a “back to basics – free from hype” approach to club

fitting, Hugh will endeavour to ensure that students are safely guided through the, often misleading advertising fog, that surrounds so many club purchases. Aimed at the serious golfer (handicap of 18 or below), the team are sure that golfers attending the course will undoubtedly benefit. Royal Winchester Victorious EAST BERKSHIRE JUNIOR STAG at Knight Cup Finals A very humid but dry day at Romsey played host to this year’s semi-finals and finals of the Knight Cup. The day got off to a cracking start as spectators watched Kerry Smith (Waterlooville) drive the first green. The first semi-final was between Oak Park represented by Lucy Church and Maggie Smith, and Waterlooville represented by Kerry Smith and Bev Pennekett (who won the trophy in both 2014 and 2015). Once Oak Park had recovered from Kerry’s stunning first shot, they fought back and were up by the 4th and remained up, eventually winning 5 & 4. The second semi-final between Royal Winchester represented by Pauline Davies and Sue Buckett, and Blackmoor represented by Esther Sparrow and Sarah Ellis was a much closer affair with Royal Winchester glad they had taken an early lead when Blackmoor played a delightful chip in followed a few holes later by a lovely tee shot on the par three 10th. The back nine was very close, fluctuating between 1 and 2 up to Royal Winchester who eventually won on the 18th hole 1 up.

The very exciting final was a totally different match to both the morning matches with Royal Winchester surging to a 4 up lead after 9 holes. However, Oak Park started their fight back with a tee shot to about a foot on the par 3 10th and were all square by the 13th, a half on the 14th kept the match a dead heat. Royal Winchester then had final flurry winning the 15th, 16th and 17th to win the Knight Cup, for the first time since 1978 (we believe), with a final score of 3 & 1. This years East Berkshire Junior Stag took place at East Berkshire Golf Club, Crowthorne, Berkshire on Thursday 28th July and attracted a total of 75 entrants, playing 36 hole individual Medal Competition. The Individual Winner was Danny Daniels of Essendon Golf Club with a total of 138 for the 36 holes. The Berks Bucks and Oxon teams won both the under 18 and under 16 team events. Congratulation and thanks to East Berkshire Golf Club for hosting such a well organised and successful day. A very enjoyable day was had by all entrants and spectators and we hope to see you all again next year.

The one stop shop for substainable bunker construction It’s September; golf clubs all over the land are making very difficult financial decisions. Which winter projects shall we do and can we afford them? Time perhaps to reflect on some wise words by Dr Alister Mackenzie nearly 100 years ago: ‘The more one sees of golf courses, the more one realises the importance of doing construction work really well, so that it is likely to be of a permanent character.’

It makes sense to install permanent works, obtaining the best possible results at a minimum of costs. EcoBunker’s Richard Allen, a civil engineer experienced in the cost benefit analysis of major infrastructure schemes, has, for the last 10 years been committed to reducing waste, on and off golf courses. He has focussed on his area of passion; bunkers. Bunkers, as we all know, require regular maintenance and frequent reconstruction. ‘Major public sector works will not proceed unless they prove by CBA (Cost Benefit Analysis) a considerable return on investment over their design life. I think more clubs can do this: a rigorous financial analysis of the benefits of proposed course works is well worth the effort. A lot of waste could be prevented. EcoBunker clients Southerndown, Pennard and Secession GC did the maths and are now really benefitting. Andrew Mannion (Southerndown) and Huw Morgan (Pennard) figured that every ‘traditionally’ built bunker on their courses was costing them £350 to £400 per year to maintain. After renovating using the EcoBunker construction method, feedback is now showing a payback period of 4 years, leaving 16 years or more with virtually no bunker maintenance burden. The return on investment in both cases is conservatively estimated at 400%. At Secession GC, traditional bunker construction methods simply could not consistently deliver the high standards of presentation expected at this ‘Low Country Links’. Following a full course renovation in 2015 (which utilised EcoBunker’s unique brown face option), Superintendent Mark Mitchell is a happy man: ‘They’ll give us longevity, cut expenses and give us the look we want throughout the year…We won’t be as much at Mother Nature’s mercy.’ Course Designer, Bruce Devlin is equally impressed: ‘I’m a traditionalist, but they look more like Scottish revetted bunkers than anything I’ve seen in this country. From a financial and visual standpoint I do believe these bunkers will be a saviour for us. We will not have to rebuild them every 3 to 4 years.’

Restoration of classic parkland style bunkers can also benefit from the EcoBunker construction method. ‘Not all courses are suited to deep revetted faces’ stated Richard, ‘But a careful use of raised edges above the sandline, exposing a revetted face, here and there, set into rising ground can restore the original designer’s (Braid, Colt, Hawtree and many others) intent which is very much ‘in vogue’ at present’. Gloucestershire have clinched the English Women’s County Championships for the first time in the tournament’s history.

Glouchestershire’s Team coach Kirsty Taylor added: “We are just a great team. We have worked together on team building and it’s taken a while to bring it all together but they all deserve this. This is a young team which is growing, it’s been a work in progress for a number of years, and how good will they be next year?"

Having qualified for the County Finals for six consecutive years, Gloucestershire were surely due a win … and their goal was finally achieved on the tight fairways and slick greens of Waterlooville Golf Course in Hampshire. Representing the South West region, Gloucestershire’s Captain Andra Knight said: “I can’t believe we’ve done it, I’m overwhelmed. What a team! The players have gelled together all week and they just fought and fought and fought. The golf was excellent and intensely close with five of the day’s nine games decided on the 18th.” Stephen Millett, President of WGC said: “What a fantastic result for the Gloucestershire team having come so close in the preceding years. All the teams played impressive golf in true sporting spirit, and it was a great pleasure for Waterlooville to play hosts to one of the most prestigious tournaments in the England golfing calendar.” Blow for blow The South West champions made their move early, taking a slender lead when they won the foursomes 2-1, holding their nerve to take their points on the 18th green.

The first two singles of the afternoon illustrated the great determination of both teams. Alex Giles finished her game par, birdie to win the last two holes and snatch a half for Gloucestershire. Then Alison Knowles produced exactly the same finish to grab her half for Yorkshire. Behind them, the players were trading blow for blow. Gloucestershire’s Bethan Popel won the clash of the England internationals, beating Olivia Winning 3-2. Megan Clarke replied, winning her game 3-2 for Yorkshire. Two games to go to decide the destination of the trophy. Yorkshire’s Rochelle Morris was on course for a 2-1 win in the bottom game and the outcome of the championship rested on

All credit to the girls.” Norfolk made their first appearance at County Finals for 42 years and marked the occasion by winning the battle for third place with an emphatic 7.5-1.5 win over Buckinghamshire. The teams shared the foursomes but Norfolk won all six singles.

Unchartered territory Becky won the 16th to go one up with two to play – and stepped into unchartered territory having won all her previous matches before this point. She lost the 17th after her drive found trees on the right but she took charge on the 18th, reaching the green in regulation three shots, while her opponent tangled with the rough around the green and a bunker. Becky won the hole, finished her match 2up – and the Gloucestershire celebrations began.

Team captain Tracey Williamson said: “It’s a superb effort to finish third. This is the first time a lot of our girls have played at this level and we will be able to build on the experience.”

The lesson that changed Richard FACE UP TO YOUR FEARS Bland’s life

What is the one reason most people end up plugged in the face of that bunker they were attempting to get over?

It’s great to see Richard Bland doing so well these days. He is justly reaping the rewards for a lifetime of dedication, hard work and good coaching. He now has, what I consider, one of the best swings on tour; a beautifully rounded, single plane action with virtually no shaft rotation through impact. No wonder he has become so consistent.

FEAR. They feared exactly what happened. Therefore they visualised exactly what happened as they saw the nightmare play out in their minds. How oh how has this happened again many cry. This cycle of frustration and fear won't be broken unless you take serious steps to alter the way you are thinking before addressing that ball. Simply stating "I knew that was going to happen" should be swiftly followed with another questions of" why did it happen? How can I change this cycle?Act on it rather than put up with seeing the shot go pear shaped again and again... So. You've hit a fantastic shot that just came up a bit short of the green on your least favourite par 3. Before allowing yourself to think about how many ways this scenario could possibly go wrong and wreck your score card.... STOP. Before you even come to a halt by your ball begin to say to yourself. Where do I want this ball to land, what sort of shot is going to get me the perfect bounce and release the perfect amount to mean I have a mere tap in for my par 3. Study the shot laid out in front of you and try to imagine the best shot you've ever played from a spot like this, Everything you think from 10yards short of even getting to your ball needs to revolve around how well you are about to play this shot. I can hear you already saying "easy for you to say, my chipping isn't up to much" but bear with me. Don't think I am expecting you to suddenly become a master "a La" the late. great Seve but you also can't expect Harry Potter to spring from the bushes and zap you with a "holeitasifbymagicous" spell.

Once you feel a bit of confidence returning you'll be well away. Quick fix thought? Literally take the ball out of the equation. Do two practice swings, one without the ball, one with it. Always focused on just getting GRASS. By getting the grass you are gifting that ball the glorious loft on your wedge of choice. Resulting in a crisply struck shot that pops up in the air effortlessly. Good luck and if you'd like a lesson out on the course shout. It will do your confidence, course management and general well being the world of good.

You will need to practice this shot, see yourself succeed at it. If this is likely to be a struggle get your pro in on the act, go out on the course and have a playing lesson where you are put into these exact conditions.

Fear should not be a part of your golf. It shouldn't enter your mind, if it is there it is taking away from what should be an enjoyable game.

He certainly has come a long way since the day he phoned me for help with his game. Richard, who at that time was playing on the Challenge Tour, was really struggling. He had reached a low point when he carded a score in the eighties in one of the events. He phoned me because I had helped him with his game a couple of years previously, when he was on the Mastercard Tour. The Mastercard Tour was the equivalent of today’s Euro Pro Tour. He won the Mastercard Order of Merit that year, which gave him his place on the Challenge Tour. Richard had been trying for some years to get onto the very lucrative European Tour. He had been to Tour School on several occasions and played very well but didn’t quite make his card. The best way to get on The European Tour is through the Challenge Tour. The top fifteen at the end of the season on this tour get a place. A place won through the Challenge Tour is ranked higher than one from the Tour School. This means that a Challenge Tour graduate will receive more tournament starts in the following season. More tournament starts increases the chances of earning enough money to retain full playing privileges for the following season.

the old position the whole of his golfing life! But the season was passing by and the chances of getting a European Tour Card seemed to be diminishing. A change was either going to be feast or famine; hopefully it was going to be a feast. I told Richard that his hips and knees where out of alignment and that he should try to get them parallel with each other. A small insignificant thing you might think, but this alteration would change the angle of the pelvis and the lower spine. This change, in my opinion, would make his pivot more efficient and pave the way for future swing development.

After we started working together again, Richard’s game improved a little but he was still well down in the rankings and not playing up to his great potential. His swing then was very timing based with some compensatory moves. As I have mentioned in previous articles, the way to improve is to reduce these compensations. Although swings fall into one of two categories there is plenty of scope for individual style.

After an initial disruption to his game in the form of a low duck hook, Richard began to perform very well and started climbing the rankings. His real high point came when he won the Challenge Tour Grand Final at the end of the season, with a fabulous sixty three in the last round. Winning this tournament hoisted him up the rankings and gave him his first taste of playing on the European Tour. His first season was very successful, missing out on rookie of the year by one place to Nick Dougherty.

I felt that these compensations could be reduced if the address position improved. I was a bit reluctant at first to make a wholesale change to his address because I knew how destructive it could be at the outset, particularly because he had been in
