OLYMPIC GOLD GLORY FOR HAMPSHIRE’S ROSE
HAMPSHIRE’S Justin Rose looked down at the historic Olympic gold medal hanging round his neck and talked of the realisation in Rio of his seven-year dream.
‘That felt better than anything I've ever won,’ said the 36-year-old member of North Hants Gold Club in Fleet. ‘It was the best tournament I've ever done.

‘Hopefully we've shown Brazil what golf is about. I'm glad it was close. Not for my nerves. For golf.’ While several other high-profile golfers had decided not to compete , Rose had relished the prospect of becoming an Olympian from the moment the sport's return to the Games was confirmed in 2009.

His two-shot victory over Henrik Stenson made him golf’s first Olympic champion since 1904 and secured his place in the sport’s history. But it was his desire to become part of the whole Olympic ethos that put the gloss on his quest. Such was his eagerness to be part of the whole experience, Rose arrived in Brazil in the week before the Olympics officially started to ensure he was part of the opening ceremony.

‘This is where all the players wanted to be because there's no money, there's not much else to play for, really, other than right up here. And yet somehow the guys really enjoyed the whole Olympic experience, and I think that says it all.’
‘I got down here Friday before the tournament. That's typically how I try to prepare for Major Championships. I had the benefit of walking in the opening ceremony and watching other sports, which was all part of the plan.

COMMENT WHEN we look at the number of women athletes in dozens of sports who went to Rio, and compare it to the topranking golf men players who declined to go, it does look pretty bad for our sport. Quoting fear of the zica virus, which is supposed to be much more dangerous for women than men, the top men golfers dropped out in droves. It is hard to escape the conclusion that many were worried that yet another tournament to fit into their schedule disrupted their money-making merry-go-round. All hail, then, the likes of Justin Rose, Henrik Stenson and Sergio Garcia, who were patriotic and proud to be part of the Olympic adventure. Many, many people argued for golf to be included in the Olympics after an absence of more than a century. Golf needs the world-wide focus which only the Olympics can provide. We can only hope that the Olympic authorities do not react to the cold-shoulder by many of golf’s star players by dropping golf from the Tokyo games next time round, and look instead at the unbounded joy and pride of those golfers who did take part.

JIM Furyk became the first player in PGA Tour history to shoot a round of 58, Which included 10 birdies and an eagle for 12 under par. The 46-year-old American set the remarkable new low score at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut – but still did not win the tournament. He finished in fifth, three shots behind winner Russell Knox of Scotland. Furyk, pictured, was already one of six men to have hit a sub-60 total for 18 holes, and he said after his historic round: ‘It's pretty cool.

McIlroy was among the high profile absentees from the men's event, along with world number one Jason Day, US Open champion Dustin Johnson and two times major winner Jordan Spieth, and he had said he would be watching the Olympics on TV – but not the golf. Given the overwhelming success of the tournament, there is a consensus among those competing in Rio that the leading players who stayed away are now probably regretting their decisions.

that goal I said, “I had my one chance, I was able to go ahead and birdie the last hole and do it, it'll probably never happen again”. And lo and behold, I made the turn today and said, “Here we go again”. It's fun to break that barrier and be the first one.’

The bid to attract younger players into the sport with a faster, jazzier type of golf could be tried out by the Tour as early as next year and rolled out in 2018, said chief executive Keith Pelley.
He said the format would probably be a country competition featuring the top players representing national sides: ‘You could see England playing Scotland in a six-hole matchplay. If you're not prepared to change, you're not prepared to be innovative, if you're not prepared to actually take chances, then sports will fall behind.’

A NEW European Tour competition is being planned, with a tournament played over six holes and featuring a shot clock, music and fewer clubs.
Mr Pelley told BBC Radio 5 live: ‘Yes, there'd be a shot clock. Yes, there'd be music and players would probably be dressed a bit differently. Maybe they'd only play with five or seven clubs.’
By a remarkable coincidence, in the same week, 27-year-old German Stephan Jaeger shot a 12-under 58 on the PGA Tour’s secondary tier at the Ellie Mae Classic.

vowed to take a fresh look at structuring the tour better for the players, tackling slow play and not being afraid to introduce innovations which will encourage growth of the sport.

But Woods, winner of 14 of golf's major tournaments has been struggling with form in recent years, and in 2013 Nike signed a sponsorship deal with Rory Mcllroy, reportedly worth $100million over five years. But despite splashing the cash on marketing, sales at Nike's golf unit fell by eight per cent. The company said it still intends to ‘partner with more of the world's best golfers’. Trevor Edwards, president of Nike Brand, said: ‘We're committed to being the undisputed leader in golf footwear and apparel. We will achieve this by investing in performance innovation for athletes and delivering sustainable profitable growth for Nike Golf.’ McIlroy tweeted: ‘Sad for @nikegolf employees that worked so hard and made genuinely great golf equipment.’
BLUES AROUND THE GREENS FOR RORY RORY McIlroy is planning a complete overhaul of his putting after a second successive year without victory in the majors. McIlroy's ball-striking remains superb, but he is found wanting on and around the greens. At the USPGA, he was 151st out of 156 in putting - and the field included 20 club professionals.

Up at the crack of dawn, and fortified with a hearty breakfast, we set forth for our second day, and the prospect of two more first class golf courses to be played on the island. It was Michael Rees a comparatively short drive to our first port of call, the Club de Golf Son Servera. When I saw the name on our itinerary I did not recognise it, however as we approached I realised I had been there many years before. And so it proved to be, for when the course originally opened in 1966 it was a nine hole layout, and was then called Punta Rotja, and subsequently changed its name to the present title of Son Servera. The course was designed in two distinct stages by noted English architect John Harris and Francisco Lopez Segales, and is the second oldest on the island. The original course was devastated by a ferocious storm in November 2001; the tempest blew down over 2,200 pine trees and caused havoc with the course. The course eventually recovered and was then extended to eighteen holes, and the revised layout finally opened for play in 2012 and as a reminder of those catastrophic events there is a monument to the storm in a prominent position out on the course. We were told that the course was famed for the very tough run of holes numbered 3 to 7, holes which had been added to the original nine during the reconstruction of the course, plus extra new holes numbered 12 to 15. The prediction proved to be all too accurate, a consecutive run of four of the hardest, but

most rewarding holes you will play. The 4th is over a ravine, the 5th a monster par 5, the 6th defended by water, and the 7th around a huge lake. Four holes where there was a positive paucity of pars, with just reason. The course overall proved to be a thoroughly enjoyable test of golf, challenging but fair and in first class condition, one that will certainly be on my list of must play courses on the island. There was an added bonus at the conclusion of the round, with a first class lunch in the clubhouse before we boarded the bus for our next challenge. Capdepera Golf lies to one side of the Sierra Llevant Mountains between the villages of Arta

and Capdepera, it is described as one of the most beautiful in Mallorca, with a clubhouse built in typical mallorquin style, and which also houses the excellent Roca Viva Restaurant. There is an instant tranquil atmosphere as you arrive and prepare to play the course designed by American architect Dan Maples and opened for play in 1989. There is a vista of lush green, fairways, inviting as you stand on the first tee, looking forward to the round, and in particular the famed 15th hole, a spectacular par three which is regularly voted the best hole on the island. The first few holes are relatively flat, with doglegs and water hazards to make the round very interesting, and the final six holes
are undoubtedly the most difficult, the famed 15th certainly did not disappoint, and with a birdie on the card it was certainly a hole to remember. The views of the Canyamel Valley, the mountains and the Mediterranean Sea in the background, make this location very special. After an enjoyable game there was time for a cooling beer on the terrace and to sit admire the scenery musing over the golf played in the day before our return to the Hotel Serrano Palace at Cala Ratjada. The hotel is the perfect base for the courses which are situated in the North East of the island, and the combination of good and varied golf and comfort would fully justify a sojourn in the region. Our itinerary meant that we would be leaving the comfort of Hotel Serrano Place and returning to the south of the island for the final stretch of our visit, for a new hotel and to sample to the courses closer to the capital city of Palma. The third day of our concentrated Mallorcan tour and another very early start, but it is no hardship when the weather is beautiful and the sun shining, there is even time for an Michael Rees invigorating walk along the beach before another hearty breakfast. Clubs and luggage duly loaded into the minibus, we set off south for the capital Palma, where we are to play Puntiro at Golf Park Mallorca. The course is located ten kilometres from the historic city, and easily accessible from the airport. Puntiro was created by Nicklaus Design, with the philosophy of building a course with the minimum disruption to the environment. Any travelled golfer will instantly recognise all the trademark features of Nicklaus Design, expansive fairways, numerous cavernous bunkers, large water hazards and enormous undulating greens, all of which are in evidence at Puntiro. With a very tight schedule there was not much time to use the well-equipped driving range and practice area, but with more time the Golf Academy would be a useful facility. The natural setting of the course, and a total absence of buildings around it, make a very attractive golf course, lots of vegetation lines the holes, with pines, olive trees and carob trees, and flowering bushes to add colour. The green staff maintain the course in fine condition and the greens were fast and true, testing the putter on the large surfaces, when two putts were far from a certainty. The two very large lakes one on each half of the course brings two holes into play, on the front nine the 7th and 8th, and the on the back nine the 15th and 16th, four

intimidating holes if you are wary of the water. A tasty lunch in the clubhouse was a good way to end the visit. All in all an enjoyable resort course that would be ideal for a golf holiday. With clubs packed into the bus it was time to check into the Steigenberger Golf & Spa Resort at Camp de Mar, in the south western corner of the island, and an excellent hotel it proved to be. After checking in and depositing luggage, it was a very short buggy ride to the adjacent course, Golf De Andratx, and our next sporting adventure. Golf de Andratx is a well-known venue, recognised as one of the more difficult courses in the region, the 6th hole, a monster par 5 is reputed to be the longest hole in Spain at 602 metres. It winds uphill through the trees, with water hazards, and old man par is an uncommon visitor. The tee shot from the 8th hole gives spectacular views of the sea and the hills around, and with seven lakes, and snowy white quartz in the bunkers; it is very colourful, enhanced by the contrasting colour of the three different types of grasses used in the construction.

The course was designed to be very water efficient, using recycled water, and with a desalination plant on site, an ecological example of good practices for sustainable course maintenance. It should be pointed out that this is not a course which would lend itself to walking, a buggy is well recommended, as there are some long walks between green and tee. In summary, elevated tees give great panoramic views, and the par three’s over water are great fun, if costly in balls, and after cold drinks on the terrace, it is a short buggy ride back to the luxury of the elegant five star hotel. With facilities that include an excellent spa and fitness centre, pools and a choice of restaurants, nothing is left to chance. After spending time relaxing and sampling the delights of the hotel, it was time to return to the clubhouse for our final dinner at the Restaurant Campino, and a fitting end to a great trip. Fine food and wine and excellent service, the hallmark of the hotel and spa. Flying back to Gatwick, there was time to muse over the golf courses that we had played, six very different challenges, all enjoyable, some more difficult than others,
but the combination was most satisfying. Opportunities to play courses a little less well known to UK golfers than the big three of Son Vida, Son Gual and Santa Ponsa, but each enjoyable and enhanced by the warm welcome received everywhere. The two first class hotels proved to be the ideal bases for the two principal locations, Hotel Serrano Place in the north and Steinberger Golf & Spa Resort in the south. A location with a choice of nineteen courses, which will satisfy the most discerning golfer, and with convenient flights from regional airports on the Monarch schedules, with plenty of other activities and attractions when a break from golf is required, golf in Mallorca ticks all the boxes.

Meon Valley Hotel Opens NEW ‘Academy Course’ Meon Valley Marriott Hotel & Country Club recently extended its already excellent practise facilities with the addition of a short 9 hole chip/pitch and putt Academy Course. The addition of the Academy Course fills the gap between the hotels Driving Range, Bunker, Long Pitching and Putting facilities enabling its golf members and visitors to perfect their ‘touch’ with the ‘chip and run’ and ‘short pitching’ element of their game. Meon Valley golf members are able to use the facilities free of charge providing they register beforehand with the hotels golf shop, while adult visitors can play a 9 hole round for just £5 which includes the use of a 7 or 8 iron, putter, ball and tees, children 12 years and under play free.
Hotel Golf Director Neal Grist said “The Academy Course is something we have been thinking of creating for some time. It’s perfect not only for our members to perfect their short game but is also an ideal opportunity for local people and visitors staying in the hotel, perhaps with children, to spend an hour or so to experience and enjoy the game of golf”. Pete Fletcher aged 65 from Lee-on-theSolent Golf Club as Captain during 2015, nominated Prostate Cancer UK as his chosen charity – joining the ranks of Prostate Cancer UK’s, Men United movement, for everyone who believes men are worth fighting for Pete raised £7,200 by organising numerous golf related events like an awayday, inter club matches, local competitions, a Captain’s golfing weekend etc. Pete also received sponsors donations, held many raffles, golfing memorabilia auctions, together with different ways of fining players, visitors and guests for ‘misdemeanours’ throughout his year. Pete was inspired to nominate the Prostate Cancer UK charity after becoming aware of the disease himself and to spread awareness to his peers, friends and families and is delighted to have raised so much to help beat prostate cancer. James Beeby, Director of Fundraising at Prostate Cancer UK, said: “We would like to
thank Pete for raising funds for Prostate Cancer UK. By doing this he and his donors have joined Men United, and are helping to make a real difference in furthering the fight against prostate cancer. “Currently one man an hour dies from prostate cancer in the UK. That’s 10,900 men a year. Based on current trends, if we ignore prostate cancer and do nothing, this number will rise to over 14,500 men a year by 2026. This annual event attracted 22 Golf Clubs and 108 players from clubs all over Hampshire, West Sussex, Isle of Wight and Wiltshire on the 3rd August 2016 at Shanklin and Sandown Golf Club. The course was presented in a tough but fair way and with warm but blustery conditions scoring was going to be difficult. COURSE RECORD BROKEN AT THE 2016 SOUTHAMPTON OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP champion for 2016. Luke Russell (Southampton) came second and Steve Lyons (South Winchester) third in the gross competition. Mark Goodhind (Romsey) took the nett prize with a score of 66 closely followed by Dan Sainsbury (Royal Winchester) and Dan Sillence (Romsey).
Jamie Markwick (Corhampton Golf Club) smashed the course record in winning the Southampton Open Championship. His score of 64 beat the previous record (held by Southampton members Luke Russell, Chris Bunting and Jake Hennen) by 2 shots. What makes the achievement even more remarkable was that Jamie was the youngest player at the tender age of 15 in the field of nearly 35 players with a handicap of 5 or less and 50 of the competitors at 8 or under. Playing of a handicap of 2, he managed the feat registering eight birdies.
Players with the top ten scores in each category qualified towards the Hampshire Order of Merit. This year was also the inaugural year of the Open Championships Golf Club Trophy. This team prize was decided by the 10 best scores from each club added together.
Reflecting on his achievements, Jamie commented “everything just went my way. I had never played the course before so it held no fears. I just went out and played my best golf”. Event organiser, Bill Webb, said “This was a truly fantastic score and I am sure that we will hear a lot more from this young man. PETER ALLISS VISITS PETERSFIELD GOLF CLUB On Sunday 7th August Petersfield Golf Club hosted its Mixed Open. Ninety six golfers took part, representing thirty nine different golf clubs, which is a record for this very popular event. Many of the participants are regular guests and newcomers were warmly welcomed.

The weather was perfect, likewise the course. The Head Greenkeeper, Kevin Clue, and his ground staff all turned out early on Sunday morning to ensure the course was presented in tip top condition. The greens certainly out foxed many of the competitors. No PGC Mixed would be complete without the very popular halfway pit stop for complementary refreshments including a variety of delicious homemade cake. Following the golf, the competitors enjoyed an excellent and much appreciated carvery. The players were then delighted to be surprised by the guest appearance of Peter Alliss. Peter’s charity provides powered wheelchairs for disabled young people and is mainly funded by the Alliss Masters Wheelchair Classic. Fran Dowty, PGC’s immediate past Lady Captain, chose to support this with her fundraising efforts throughout her Captains year. So much so that she and the Ladies section raised sufficient funds to provide an amazing wheelchair for a youngster who would benefit from the enhanced mobility. Peter was delighted to attend PGC’s Mixed Open in order to present the wheelchair to young Master Frost. It was clear for all to see how excited young Cullum was with his new chair and it was obvious to all what a difference it would make to his mobility, independence and general welfare.

Now we have the arrival of the latest character to intrigue us with his game and his unconventional style. He’s a 5ft 9ins, 16-stone heavyweight who is hooked on fast food, and almost gave up the game recently because he was broke. He is British, he is a breath of fresh air with a roly-poly sense of fun shining through his heavily bearded face, and he radiates a sheer enjoyment of playing. He is Andrew Johnston, and he bounded into the public consciousness as one of the stars of The Open at Troon. They call him Beef, a nickname already adopted by his growing band of fans who react to every
Sam’s the man for Ryder clash RYDER Cup captain Darren Clarke has named Sam Torrance as Europe's fifth vice-captain for this month’s clash at Hazeltine in Minnesota. Torrance, 62, played in eight consecutive Ryder Cups between 1981 and 1995, and captained Europe to victory at the Belfry in 2002. The Scot joins Ian Poulter, Paul Lawrie, Thomas Bjorn and Padraig Harrington in Clarke's captaincy team. Clarke, 47, described Torrance as a ‘good friend and wonderful captain’. The fans have found a colourful new favourite and golf has a new top-table player who just loves his golf. It could be an interesting ride.

COLIN Montgomerie did not fare well at Troon in his first Open appearance for six years, finishing on 17 over par and 78th of the 81 players who made the cut. The 53-year-old Scot, above, had to come through Open qualifying this year, and has not dismissed the idea of trying the same ahead of next year's Championship at Royal Birkdale. He never won a Major on the main tour, although he has three senior majors to his name. He was hoping that this year’s Senior British Open offered a more likely route back into the main event.
‘It was my home course at Troon and I would have regretted it if I hadn't tried - I am not going to play another Open at Troon at my age,’ he told BBC Scotland. ‘Whether I try to qualify for Birkdale is another thing. Thirty-six holes in a day is a bit of a lottery, 72 guys going for three spots. I have played The Open 23 times and loved every one, so I'd love to do it again.’

There is definitely a change in people spare time and that has effected driving range patterns, it is very hard to predict when you are going to be busy or not. I think peoples interest in golf is still there but life has got busier for everyone. Q. What do you think of Sky sports coverage of the open this year? A. Of what I saw I thought it was good, but the viewing figures don’t lie! You can’t beat golf on the BBC, it was part of our summer, it’s the same as cricket years ago. They would be on the television all day and it inspired children to go out and try the sport, I don’t get the same feeling from sky sports coverage.

Q. There has been rumours for a few years that the driving range might close because of a housing development scheme, is that correct? A. Yes, the rumours are correct, and it has been difficult operating the range with that possibility hanging over us, but at the moment the scheme is very complicated and is taking a long time to pull together, so it is still business as usual! Q . Are people still taking golf lesson? A. Yes, we are doing golf lessons every day, I am operating a “open range” scheme for some golf professionals in the area, where they are welcome to bring their lesson to the range a teach their clients providing they buy their own balls and look after their own bookings.

The popular Professionals and Ladies Foursomes Challenge Tournament was held at Calcot Park on Tuesday 9th August. Now in its 71st year and sponsored by local property management company, Balfours, the tournament attracted 40 local Professionals and their lady golfing partners to compete in this 36-hole Foursomes Medal event.
We all like to support charities where possible and when it comes to golf, many of us are happy to dip into our purse and part with the odd fiver to buy a strip of raffle tickets for a good cause at the various Open Competitions and Coffee mornings.

Personally, unless I spot a decent prize table, I dread stepping up to claim any prizes, as I usually end up with smellies so pungent and chemically based, they can trigger an allergic reaction with just a mere whiff. Then there are the wines that are so acidic they can strip paint, the dust collecting trinkets or the sort of chocolates that my granny’s generation used to love because of the soft centres.
Raffle prizes are usually kindly donated by members but as a previous lady captain pointed out, she had to introduce an eagled eyed quality control person to inspect items in case they were palming off out-of-date chocolates which had more white bloom on them than the average frosty day.
So when a friend of mine had a winning raffle ticket and picked up a box of luxury hand creams and lotions she was delighted at such a useful prize to help her dry hands. However, it wasn’t until she looked more carefully at the battered packaging she realised it had been opened and somebody had already benefited from a few squeezes from the various bottles and tubes, as they were clearly less than full. On another occasion a friend was really excited when she won a beautifully

With a home advantage, Calcot Park’s Professional Team excelled themselves with Assistant PGA Professional, Alex Lodge and his partner, Calcot Park’s Ladies’ ViceCaptain, Maureen Rogers, taking first place overall with two rounds of nett 69, totalling 138, seven shots ahead of the runners up, Paul Newman & Karen Thompson from East Berks Golf Club in Crowthorne. Another of Calcot Park’s Assistant PGA Professionals, Lewis Bird, finished in third place, on countback, with his partner, Chris Green, scoring a nett total of 146. Among the prize winners, also, was Calcot member, Djura Macrae-Stowelwinder and her partner, Guy Woodman from Stoke Park, who won the Best Scratch Prize for the morning round with a gross 76.

120 ladies from 30 Hampshire and IOW clubs contested the Seniors Championships at Corhampton, another Hampshire club celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2016. We even had a hole in one to celebrate, a wonderful achievement by Jo Youngs from Blacknest on the par 3, 11th hole.
Annie Wortley from Meon Valley was the 2016 Nett Trophy winner but it was Jane Bennett from Lee-on-the-Solent who has done the double this year, winning not only the Seniors’ Championships with the lowest gross score of 81 but also the gross trophy in the Veterans’ event held back in May.
ROWLANDS CASTLE GOLF CLUB EMERGE VICTORIOUS AT CENTENARY FOURSOMES 46 clubs, including some from Jersey and the IOW, sent their winning pairs to Hartley Wintney for the final of the Centenary Foursomes on 11th August. The course, which is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year, was in fantastic condition but strategically placed ditches and water hazards, especially on the back nine caught many out. However, the cream rose to the top and it was Janet Doel and Diana Littler Rowlands Castle who emerged victorious with an excellent score of 38 points.

The future looks bright for women and girls’ golf across Great Britain and Ireland, with new data revealing a surge in the number of females becoming involved in the sport, says Golf England. Fuelled by a group of female professionals, national media campaigns and the efforts of golf’s governing bodies, golf participation among women is on the increase, as the sport continues to work hard to attract new players to the game and convert them into membership. Over the last decade, females have made up only approximately 14 per cent of golf club membership in GB&I, lagging behind other European countries such as Germany, Austria and Sweden, but significant progress is being made, according to new data from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
AT seven months pregnant, many women would be thinking about a spot of maternity leave and relaxing as much as possible before the big day. Not Hampshire’s Liz Young. She had another important date to keep – in the Ricoh British Ladies’ Open. The 33-year-old, who plays out of Brokenhurst Manor Golf Club, hit the Woburn fairways with an impressive first-round 73, aided by two birdies in the opening three holes and relished the challenge. Liz sealed qualification for the Open by finishing 18th at a tournament in the Czech Republic the previous month and had spent the next few weeks praying her body - and her baby - would allow her to make it to the first tee.
‘After the Czech Republic, I knew I was definitely in and I was just hoping I could tee it up today,’ she said. ‘If I got round, that was great, but I just wanted to tee it up and give myself a chance. This was always my dream and this is my favourite course in England.’

Slowly and inevitably, her body started to resist. ‘I’m pretty tired,’ she said afterwards.
‘My back’s hurting, swollen ankles, sore feet. But it was the first time I have played 18 holes (this week) so I was quite pleased to get round. ‘I am just taking it one shot at a time, which is what I normally do but even more so now with the bump.’ She said her swing had stayed pretty solid, but her power was draining away: ‘I’ve lost

a lot of distance, especially in my longer clubs. And then there’s the fatigue of actually walking the golf course. I start to waddle after about 12 holes.’ Her caddie, husband Jonathan, admitted it was difficult to watch his wife come through the back nine, where she lost her early momentum and shot three bogeys.
‘It’s tough when you know she is exhausted. But you just have to support her and keep cheering her on - and push her up the hills.’ Liz missed the cut but won the applause of the spectators’ gallery for her pluck in just completing two rounds, although she missed the cut. She said she hoped her unborn daughter will take to the sport as well: ‘She is learning the swing early! My husband plays scratch golf as well so she is coming into a golfing family.’

Liz was England’s top woman player in her amateur days and is now a leading player on the Ladies European Tour, where she is currently 20th on the Order of Merit.
In emotional scenes on the final green, Jutanugarn was embraced by her mother Narumon after completing victory.
‘My mother cried at the end,’ she revealed. ‘She said Thank You', and that made my day. For me it was hard today. I felt a little bit nervous at times. I think this victory is really important for me and Thai golf. I hope I can inspire some players in Thailand.
A double-bogey at the 13th threatened her chances as her rival closed to within one shot, but a birdie at 17 and an untroubled par at the last secured the title.
The 20-year-old, pictured right, had a twostroke lead over South Korea's Mirim Lee going into the final day and started strongly to lead by five shots after nine holes.
Birdies at the second and sixth holes put her in control, especially as Lee - who had led for the first two days - had three bogeys on the front nine.

She recently teamed up with PGA professional Colin Murray to host a special day of masterclasses for 240 pupils, aged 6-13, at Walhampton School in Lymington, Hampshire. As an amateur – playing in her maiden name of Liz Bennett – she was the English stroke play champion, the winner of the England women’s order of merit, an England international and a Curtis Cup player.
In recent years, all of the amateur golf bodies in GB&I have put a renewed focus on attracting more women and girls to play and the latest participation figures are encouraging. For example, Get into Golf, a national campaign supported by the amateur bodies, The European Tour, The Ladies European Tour, The PGA, The Golf Foundation, The R&A and recently backed by Sky Sports, appears to be having an effect. England Golf initiatives in 2015 attracted over 1,200 women to coaching and over 360 became club members. Five counties reported an increase in women’s membership, and 15 counties saw an increase in girls’ memberships.
England are Euro champs THE England women’s team are European champions for the first time in 23 years. The team are celebrating a superb campaign after they beat Spain 4-3 at Oddur Golf Club in Iceland to win the gold medal at European ladies’ team championship. It was their first victory since 1993 when they also beat Spain to the title. The winning point was scored by English champion Bronte Law, who won all five of her games in the previous month’s Curtis Cup match. The team, coached by Steve Robinson of Yorkshire and captained by Anne Baines of Lancashire, was Emma Allen (Meon Valley), Alice Hewson (Berkhamsted), Bronte Law (Bramhall), Meghan MacLaren (Wellingborough), Lizzie Prior (Burhill) and OIivia Winning (Rotherham).

LEGENDS OF THE GAME... SANDY HERD – THE FOURTH CHAMPION Although the Great Triumvirate are renowned for their fantastic domination of the Open Championship in the years from 1894 to 1914, when the Great War intervened, one other great golfer was prominent, though never achieving the recognition surrounding the trio of J H Taylor, James Braid and Harry Vardon. He was often in their company, competing in exhibition matches billed as England versus Scotland, with Sandy Herd and James Braid taking on Vardon and Taylor. Although he won the Open Championship on only one occasion, compared to his illustrious companions, his record in the event was truly amazing. He competed first in 1888, when he finished in eighth place. In 1892, he finished runner up to the amateur Harold Hilton, and in the next five years was always in contention, coming 3rd the next year and 2nd again in 1895. The amazing facts are that he was still seriously competing thirty years later, with a top ten finish in 1927. He made his final appearance at St Andrews in 1939; his appearances at the oldest championship in the world spanned over fifty years. Sandy Herd almost won in 1895, when he was robbed by a hailstorm during his final round. J H Taylor went out after the storm subsided and beat Herd by two shots. Sandy celebrated his one Open victory in 1902; he had a three shot lead after three rounds, but almost gave the Claret Jug away, shooting 81 in the last round. Both Harry Vardon and James Braid missed putts to tie and force a play-off, but miss they did and Sandy was the Champion Golfer of the Year. He was the first winner to use the Haskell rubber cored ball. It was a truly fortunate event, since he played a practice round with John Ball a former Open Champion himself, he noticed that Ball was playing with the new Haskell American golf ball and how well it
performed. He tried it himself and saw how much longer he could drive the ball. After the round he went into Jack Morris’s shop and bought four of the new balls. The rest as they say is history, when he went on to lift the Claret Jug for the first and only time. He was beaten to a major win by his brother Fred who had won the US Open in 1898, the first time it was played over 72 holes. Alexander “Sandy” Herd was born in St Andrews on the 24th April 1868, he was born into a golfing family, and his brothers were also golf professionals. He worked as a baker’s apprentice, then a few years as a plasterer, but golf was his true calling. He turned pro in 1891 when he went to the West Lancashire club as superintendent of the greens and caddy master. He was later pro at Portrush before

he returned to England. His career took him South to England, where he became the professional the Huddersfield Golf Club, where he stayed from 1892 till 1911. During his time there he won numerous other championships as well The Open. He won the Irish Championship on three occasions, won the News of the World Match play twice plus numerous other important events in the golfing calendar. He made a short tour to the United States of America with J H Taylor, and on that trip endeared himself to the American golfing public. He left Huddersfield to become professional at Coombe Hill, and later Moor Park. Sandy Herd was the first club professional at Coombe Hill, a club graced by future kings and stars of the entertainment business. He was the fore runner of Open Champions at the club, being followed by Arthur Havers, Henry Cotton and Dick Burton; four Open Champions from one club.
Sandy Herd was still playing well into his late sixties; his characteristic style was described as “the old style palm grip and an extensive waggle at the address”. Bernard Darwin, that doyen of golf writers wrote “his number of waggles is only exceeded by the number of his friends”. Sandy Herd retired to London where he died in a nursing home in February 1944 at the age of 75 years. A few years ago his Open Championship 18 carat gold medal (pictured) was sold at Bonham’s auction for the princely sum of £64,900.00. It was generally agreed by pundits and fellow professionals alike, that he would have won many Opens but for the brilliance and dominance of the Great Triumvirate of J H Taylor, James Braid and Harry Vardon, who between them won it sixteen times. Sandy was the fourth member of that elite group, overshadowed by his peers, but a true Legend of the game in his own right. Michael Rees

STICKY SANDY SAVES!! A turn for the better Have you ever got yourself in a position in a bunker and wondered “How on earth do I get myself out of this crazy mess?”. Well fear no more as here are a few hints and tips to help you escape even the stickiest of sandy wickets! Uphill all the way: When you find yourself on an upslope (or indeed any awkward lie) you must prepare your set-up correctly. There is no point in fighting gravity so you need to go with the flow and settle your weight on the lower foot and lean with the slope- not against it. The ball needs to be positioned nearer the front foot (the one nearest the target). You should no be in a position on the slope that if I were to take a photo of you and turn it to neutralise the slope you should look normal. There should be no inclination of you fighting the slope at all. You can set up as if stood on train tracks to the target(no need to open stance or club face as the ball is going to fly high off this slope anyway. Aim to land it just short of the hole to allow for the fact that it is going to go up lots! The swing itself will need a good hinge of the wrists and a firm acceleration into the sand behind the ball as is usually required in executing a successful bunker shot. The extra amount of height you get from this shot will depend on the severity of the slope so make sure you practice varying gradients to get a feel for this shot on different levels. Going Deeper Underground When you find your ball resembling a fried egg having plugged in the bunker the approach needs to be slightly different. The ball cannot be rescued using a splash shot method as there is too much sand around it. A digging action is required here to blast the ball onto the green. Move the ball back in your stance away from the target. Plant a bit more weight than normal on the front foot to encourage the club to be picked up steep and a descending blow to follow. Your clubface can be ever so slightly closed for this shot, as you need a cutting edge to slice into the sand behind the ball. The more the ball is buried the more you need to close the face and adjust your feet accordingly. Once set up pick the club up steep and accelerate hard into the sand behind the ball, the follow through will be very restricted as all your energy has been gobbled up by the sand. The ball will come out lower than usual and will run like crazy. Just aim to get this ball out of the bunker, middle of the green would be nice but out will do here. No heroics now! Downhill all the way When faced with a downhill slope the same rules apply for the other awkward lie except it is the opposite! Get your shoulders perpendicular to the slope and be at one with
This month I am going to cover something that is really basic and important; something that concerns players of all standards and ages.
That something is the coiling of the body in the backswing. We’ve all hit that shot that comes sweetly out of the middle of the clubface. The swing itself feels effortless and well balanced and the ball just flies off. Wouldn’t it be great if we could repeat that sensation? the hill. Your weight will be on the front foot this time and the ball nearer the back foot. Grip down the club ever so slightly to help avoid digging in too far behind the ball. Club face can be opened slightly to encourage added loft on the shot and arm yourself with as much loft as you carry! Lob Wedge it is then... Again hinge the wrists up and chase through the sand down the slope after the shot. Once more it is wise to practice these sloping bunker shots to get really confident with them. The balls going to come out lower and running so prepare for this and aim appropriately. Just a thought • Remember to always shuffle your feet into the sand before the shot. This gives you good grounding and an idea as to how much sand you have under the ball. It is also a very confident movement. • Practice makes perfect.. pep up a practice session by challenging yourself with dodgy lies. You will soon get really confident from the sand and you balls will be landing by the pins! • Remember if you are faced with a really tough shot such as plugged under a lip, it is not worth having a go at if you are going to risk injury or a huge score! Take you medicine and either play out sideways or declare the ball unplayable. • Always kept he swing fairly compact at about ¾’s. This will avoid an over swing and subsequent deceleration into the sand, making you really commit to the shot. • Bunkers are very daunting to some people and it is easy to talk your self out of success in them, be positive and convince yourself you can get out. This will get you accelerating through the sand. Good luck and if you struggle with normal bunker shots, let alone these extreme ones, then call me to organise a lesson. Unfortunately, the feeling described above doesn’t occur very often if the turn moves out of balance. I’ve read many golf articles and swing tips over the years concerning the back swing turn. In all these tips and articles I don’t think I’ve heard any mention of a balanced turn. I’m sure someone must have mentioned it but I don’t think I have ever read it.
Some golfers react by lifting the left shoulder away from the ball on the downswing.
I have, however, heard talk of maintaining body angles, (which is a similar thing), but not how balance affects those angles.
This golfer will feel like he is lifting up and falling back, often topping or slicing.
I have helped countless golfers improve their striking instantly by simply getting them to make a balanced turn. Balance is a primal instinct. You will fight to stay balanced no matter what. Having a balanced turn will improve your golf whether you are old or young, flexible or inflexible, a tour player or a beginner. . The body searching to find its balance can create all manner of poor shots, i.e., the most common turn fault I see on a regular basis is when a golfer moves his head forward towards the ball on the backswing. This golfer is only turning their left shoulder. The right shoulder isn’t turning away from the ball at the same time. The result of this movement is that his weight will be moving towards the toes. In order to maintain balance and prevent toppling forward he may move his hips forward and stand up on the downswing.
This type of down swing is usually greeted by cries of “you lifted your head” by fellow golfers. Unfortunately, for this poor chap, trying to keep his head down is most likely the cause of him lifting up in the first place. Moving forward is not to be confused with losing height in the back swing. Losing height can be attributed to the natural coiling process of the spine. If you look at the turn of Rory McIlroy for instance, he drops quite a bit. I have a number of drills to help golfers make a balanced turn, more of that next month. How do you know if your turn is faulty? One way is to get an app on your phone; Coaches Eye is a good one. Take a video - make sure the phone is held still - and put a line as I have in the picture, if the head moves towards the line in the backswing, you are falling off balance and you will have an adverse reaction.
This is a reaction that often results in a big hook, a block to the right and even a shank.
